You’re dealing in absolutes. If comparing GW2 to learning a program with a lot of tools and settings is ridiculous, learning to walk around in a room with chairs is your better example?

Yes, that definitely seems like a more appropriate comparison.

Playing GW2 involves making a character that represents you do things. You press one button to make it move forward, press a number to make it fight. Its not very complicated. Learning how to play well or min-max a character build is more complex, but the convo is about beginning players.

And learning to walk is somewhat difficult for a new baby.

Playing a character that represents yourself in a world environment is much more intuitive than learning a complex and abstract computer program.

Comparing learning GW2 to learning animation software is kind of ridiculous also.

I meant like learning to walk: most people learn in a normal home with furniture and varying surfaces like rugs, wood and tile. Imagine that every child learned to walk in a completely featureless room with no obstacles because that would be “too hard”. Then after a few months they are put in a room with obstacles. Is this going to be easier or harder? Now the child is going to be running into things because he wasn’t taught to deal with them from the beginning.

And as I said, those new players who appreciate a challenge are going to think GW2 is a new childrens’ MMO or something. Maybe they’ll go find something more challenging.

Most people learn by doing, but each player learns at different speeds. The problem arises when you try to force players into situations they are not prepared for, a fine example is SAB world two. The whole premise was to force players into becoming better at jumping puzzles but you can not force people to learn, it has to be natural, like the much more successful SAB world one.

But at the end of the day trying to make players better at the game is pointless due to the fact that the majority will almost always take the easy route. A fine example of this is the Queensdale Champion train, other places could be more rewarding but players choose the train because at the end of the day they prefer to relax and gain easy loot.

Anyway I do agree with the op, if you want people to learn things they need to have access even if they do not pick up on it right away, just do not expect people to do it or force them.

Yep, luckily GW2 doesn’t force people to do anything. If you don’t like one type of content you can simply avoid it. But I can’t choose whether or not to do something if it isn’t available to me.

I can definitely see removing certain content for new players if they were forced to do it. But it just doesn’t make any sense to me to remove it since they were not. New players that are either experienced gamers or may just find it easy to do things now don’t even have the option to challenge themselves with the things that were removed.

After all, if a person finds 5 weapon skills too complicated they can always just use 2 of them. But if you are only given 2, better or more experienced new players don’t have any options anymore.

IMO less choice is never better.

So you’re upset because we don’t listen to Vayne? Vayne is not an expert, or authority, etc that we are obliged to take his word. On top of that, many people simply disagree with him. People are allowed to have their own opinions…

It looks like the total number of results returned is restricted to around 300 items, which was probably the same as it’s always been, but now that it appears as one big scrollable list rather than separated into pages of ten items each, it feels like it’s fetching fewer items than before (it isn’t).

The best you can probably do is a search by rarity (click on the cog icon) if you have a rough idea of what you’re looking for, or search by name.

It does feel like less but maybe its not. I always assumed that if I did a search for “dye” it would return a list of all dyes. You’re saying that the old UI with pages actually returned less results than the current UI – if you’re right I guess it couldn’t have.

You have the option to go after achievements. You now do not have the option to explore the personal story until you reach certain levels – because it will be “too hard for you”. Screw you, Anet. I decide what is difficult or not. NOT. YOU.

It was too hard for some people. Doc Howler, anyone? I saw a couple topics about him, and about other parts too in early story instances.

Something being too difficult does not mean you should not allow people to do it until later. Personal Story is supposed to be one of the foundations of this game. So if it was too difficult in the beginning levels, make them easier, don’t take it away.

Here’s my problem with only listening to metrics….
With the latest LS we can go ahead and make ourselves the ascended Mawdrey piece.

Part of the requirement is that you get a piece from fractals. Metrics alone will show the player base attended fractals. What it wont show is any players that are angry about being forced to play one certain game mode to get a prize from another game mode. If you hate fractals and want the back piece ascended you just have to swallow the bitter pill.

This. Anet might say “look, the backpiece worked! More people are playing Fractals!” But I have known many players who did the grinding that they felt forced to do and when they were done were so sick of the game that they quit. So you are correct that metrics don’t show how players feel about what is being recorded.

From my point of view if a 9 and an 11 year old could pick up the game and play fine with little to no gaming experience but something like this has to come out… somethings wrong somewhere.

Yes, there are people who won’t “get” things that are different in GW2 from whatever MMO they’re used to. But that is not what I’m talking about.

Anet removed a bunch of things from low level content to “improve the new player experience”. Supposedly it is to make it easier for a new player. But people learn how to do things by doing them, not by not doing them. This will just make people learn things (like how to deal with 5 whole weapon skills) later instead of earlier. Etc.

Looking at it, endgame content is what you make of it after you did the story missions. My endgame is making my legendary. I wouldn’t consider it my complaint per se (I can’t say the same for others) as it’s more of a minor gripe for me. As for no new areas, we at least got Dry Top, right?

Feature patches like this are basically a bundle of fixes to what is existing in this game. I don’t know if there was a Feature Patch that literally added anything new, but from what I will get, I’m not too worried. Besides, I got the season 2 story chapters to look forward to once this is cleared out.

They should re-name them “QoL” patches or “bug fix” patches then.

Features are things like:
new skills
Guild halls
The introductions of fractals
Guild missions
new trait lines

They initially said that feature patches would be like major patches in other MMO’s. But I just don’t see that.

I completely agree that these updates are named wrong. Its like they are trying to make the patches SEEM better by calling them “feature” (sort of like people humorously call a bug a feature lol).

Revitalize the Game World, Resetting Hearts.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Djinn.9245

The intent of the Renown Heart system was originally to help players find event content. They also provide a decent method for us to give the player some context and awareness of what’s going on in the area. There are probably a few issues in that design which we could discuss. We could also let it suffice to say that hearts do not make the best repeatable content the game has to offer.

On the topic of keeping players engaged with open world content, I think this goal may be for more approachable from a different angle. Consider Dry Top, which has no hearts. Players on that map are participating in events all the time, largely on the premise that each event contributes to both map-level and personal-level goals. This gives me the notion that with a little help at the system level, events can and should be the bulk of repeatable open world content in Tyria.

I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts on that.

I personally don’t see the big difference between hearts and events. I’m sure to devs they are completely different, but to me they are simply “complete this objective”. In that vein, if the current idea is to have events vs hearts ala Drytop, why not replace all hearts in the world with events. Then we would have repeatable content in the whole world.

[Suggestion] The Right Time for Mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Djinn.9245

Djinn.9245

My (somtimes funny) thoughts about „mounts“

You would need different mounts for Asura, Humans/Sylvari, Norn, Charr.

Imagine…
- the huge, bulky mounts you would need for Norn and Charr (-> the cities filled with animals that are as big as Dolyaks? Urgh).
- a huge, bulky mount running past/over you (especially when you are a little Asura).
- a huge, bulky mount that runs fast without looking ridiculous (T-Rex?).
- 50 people, who are waiting for a world boss and all are sitting on a mount.
- a zerg with 50+ people (Charr and Norn) in wvw -> are the towers/keeps insured against damage from earthquakes?

Some more thoughts concerning Charr, Asura and Sylvari…
- I think a Charr feels more comfortable to run on all fours, than using a mount.
- You (as a Charr) have to find an animal which would accept a furry beast with fangs on its back. Try to get on it with your big claws/talons without hurting it and than try to find a comfortable position for your tail (-> maybe you could use the tail as a whip?).
- Imagine a Charr on a mount like their motorcycles (which would make sense). I think they would look horrible, if too much of them are driving through the beautiful landscape. Imagine them driving through Queensdale or Caledon. Urgh.

- Imagine an Asura, who would trust his/her live to a creature with inferior intelligence. They already have golems (which are slow), so there is no need for more robots, which can be used as mounts. If they want to travel fast, they’ll use portals and waypoints.

- The nature loving Sylvari using other living creatures as mounts? That’s a bit weird.

Sorry, but I just can’t imagine how mounts could be a part of Tyria.

Excellent Post. I know that I hate how mounts in WoW so often get in the way of what I am trying to see or do.

The other issues also make a lot of sense.

PvP is not a requirement in GW2 – that’s why it is in a separate place where you CAN’T affect PvE. So those of us who don’t like PvP aren’t normally required to participate – unless we want map completion.

This is incredibly nonsensical. But I’ll just say what I normally say: if I feel forced to do something I don’t like, I will leave the game. Plenty of other games out there.

I like these a lot. What’s with people saying they’re unattractive? Not enough particle effects for you people?
I want the bear one the one, but the treasure chest and anvil are nice too.
A norn or a charr would probably use the anvil one the best.
People saying that they’re glad they aren’t in need to realize that more options is always a good thing and that responding in this way might screw over chances of someone else, like me, who would want these skins.
And I personally find these a lot more attractive then the multiple reskins of the holographic dragon wings.
Those wings are terrible.
It looks like actual effort was put into designing these new backpacks, and I sure as hell hope we get the option to craft them soon as well.

Hating the Aspects and Jumping Beans

Posted by: Djinn.9245

Djinn.9245

Ok enough with the Aspects already as well as the ever present jump here to jump there to jump up to jump down. Not everyone is of the Mario generation and not everyone grew up on Sonic the Hedgehog. A Living Story where your skills are secondary to some skills picked up from finding crystals just does not appeal to me and in my opinion they are already well overdone.

Take for example the Dive Point in Dry Reach. To get to that point you have to be extremely quick with the keyboard/mouse combination and hope you can get tot the top before your Aspect runs out of charges. This is all fine and dandy for a Mario super achiever but for us aging folks with slower reflexes it is frustrating as all hell. What is wrong with having the character you decide to use in these Living stories use their own skills?

To put it bluntly I have given up on the Living Story for this episode. it is just not worth the aggravation to get the achievements.

I completely agree. This is a RPG: why do my skills matter? When roleplaying, I want to pretend I am someone that is not myself. That character is good at things that I am not. And I don’t want to be constantly reminded that I am not good at something (jumping).

It is unfortunately true that having voiced NPCs without your character being voiced leads to an impression that you are not important, that you “have no voice” in more than a literal sense. After all that phrase “has no voice” comes from someone who literally has no say. You see this in social situations all the time. The person in the room who never talks. Everyone is involved the conversation except this one person who just listens.

That is what it feels like to listen to the NPCs have a conversation. I would like to participate but I can’t. Instead I have to sit there and wait for them to finish. When THEY are done, they decide to include me with an offhand: “right boss”? Or “its for the boss” (I’m the boss but I don’t get to decide).

It would make far more sense for my character to just be a sidekick rather than “the boss”. I don’t get to make decisions or have any input. They already tell me what to do. So its silly to pretend I’m the boss.

And a child would not be allowed to decide what happens to the effects of the greatest humanoid threat in recent history.

If a soldier (who is not even a child) had discovered Hitler’s secret bunker, it wouldn’t matter if that soldier was a prodigy – he wouldn’t be allowed to say “I’m going to stay here and examine all these artifacts”. He would be required to report it to the authorities who would appoint an experienced and trusted expert to examine them.

Low-level content

in Living World

Posted by: Djinn.9245

Djinn.9245

When people read and hear about the new LS content, they are going to want to participate. Not being able to might just cost players.

Building up a guild and gathering on TS for an organised T5 run just to fail because of up-leveled noobs with poor gear, no traits and zero game skills who “want to participate” might cost players as well. Loyal and supporting ones, in this case.

One of the most annoying parts about Boss Blitz was the uplevels who’d scale the fights up but not be of any particular help because they’re wearing low level gear and don’t have the traits and possibly skills to be able to lend much of a hand. It was a complete pain to fight Boom Boom with half the group there being uplevels who are just making the turret harder to kill while supplying a quarter of the DPS that they should be bringing.

Quoted for truth.

Leveling a character to 80 takes about 2-3 weeks even for a complete novice (talking from experience). That’s a single LS episode, seriously – just go and get your character ready.

This is my point in talking about last year – there wasn’t an issue with uplevels. Boss Blitz was a Festival event, not part of the Living Story.

As for leveling a character to 80 in 2-3 weeks: LOL! That’s a good one. If I was a new player I would want to experience the world, not just rush to 80. I would hate that.

Not ignoring the rest of what you said, just pulling out some bits that I really resonate with.

This game is supposed to be about some really, REALLY BAD THINGS. The world is being taken over by undead. The dragons are waking. Scarlet has been wrecking havok and completely destroyed LA. In the midst of this a heroic team is created to face these dangers and one of the members is a cutesy child??!! This is one of the things that completely breaks my immersion, because I’m supposedly “the boss” and yet the very first thing I would do if I was really the boss is I would not have let Taimi join us in the first place.

People have these arguments like: she’s going to study Scarlet anyway. You know what would happen if some perky kid decided that they wanted to get involved in the hunt for Osama bin Laden? I mean come on, no one would say “well, she’s going to do it anyway so we might as well make her a highest-clearance member of the NSA…”

This decision by Anet to try to merge a “world in the middle of constant disaster and war” with cutesy plush backpacks for adventurers, “hot” comments and idle animations for female warriors, and a perky kid member of the highest level Multi-National Intelligence Team just makes this game completely nonsensical to me. I can’t care about anything because nothing is “real”. I’m not invested.

Except she’s not just a pesky child, she’s a talented prodigy who has been helpful in the past and is even more helpful currently. Her expertise about Scarlet does come in handy.

Essentially she’s Wesley Crusher from Star Trek the Next Generation. He was a pesky kid who kept saving the ship.

It doesn’t matter how talented she is, she doesn’t belong on the battlefield. And she certainly wouldn’t be the one in charge of the enemy’s secret plans. She might be allowed to be on the team but not in charge.

And if Wesley Crusher was allowed to do more than help with programming and coming up with strategies then that is completely unrealistic also.

I understand that people like her because she’s cute so they want to make excuses for why she should be there. But for me it is silly and breaks my immersion.

Last season of the Living Story, players of high level characters were happy to help players of low level characters through the story. I remember during Halloween of 2012 high level characters would help low level characters run through a higher level area to reach the Halloween content. I guess those generous players aren’t represented on the forums.

When people read and hear about the new LS content, they are going to want to participate. Not being able to might just cost players.

Consider this:

All of the Living Story takes place after the hero has killed zhaitan. You’re bound to be level 80 by then. So just go play the original story all of the way through and you’ll definately be 80 before you even get there. So if its story content you’re after, finish what you’ve got going first.

Last LS season many people played the LS even though we hadn’t killed zhaitan yet. Didn’t make a difference to me. I have 2 80s that have not killed zhaitan yet, but I am playing the current LS with them. Still doesn’t make a difference so I’m not sure why they changed it to level 80 now.

People want to play what their friends and guildies are playing. Cutting them out of that participation because they aren’t level 80 yet is not a good strategy.

  • Lack of Meaningful Interaction — more and more, this game seems to reward players for becoming another faceless portion of a big blob of players rather than actually giving individuals and small groups something to strive for.

I completely agree. I have a couple of people that I group with for general PvE running around and there is almost no reason to do so. Why can’t we all contribute to finishing a heart as a group? We’re always like “I’ve finished the heart, how much more do you and you have?” etc.

I agree with the rest of the post as well except PvE being “too” easy. I think it is fine the way it is and there are options people can do if they want more challenge like JP, world bosses, dungeons, fractals, etc. (not saying those are all the same amount of challenge).

concerning the Assisted leap aspect

My husband is pretty much done with GW2 due to the required use of the aspects. Like the OP, I forge on, although I also have his issues. It’s taken me a year of on/off training to just be able to use mesmer blink-type skills once in a while.

We ALL have VIMS to some degree, some of us are more sensitive. For example, dancers have to locate a spot and focus on that spot has they are doing spins (snapping their head around to look at the spot) to keep from getting motion sickness.

My perspective: up until LS: Season 2, much of the really challenging “jumping with weird movement” stuff has been in separate instances or jumping puzzles that are not part of the landscape. They are in special places where jumpers can go, but those of us that are twitch-movement challenged can avoid. Placing these aspects with timers on them on the general landscape is a divergence from that past format.

Basically, what I see happening is these situations are getting programmed WITH the idea that mesmers will help many of us do the content. That, in my mind, is an unacceptable way to create the content—falling back on one skill within a single profession to CYA.

I’m enjoying the story line, I love the game, I’m just not liking the trend in the new zone of making what will obviously be part of map completion achievements into aspect-dependent mini-jumping puzzles. At least with the previous content, if a vista or point had jumping involved, I could just take my time, stop and rest, and keep trying. It might be as simple as them including a slow and tedious path to a specific point that doesn’t need aspects, and then a quick and challenging path for those that like flitting. I’m ok taking a longer, more tedious path to a POI if I can have the satisfaction of doing it on my own without having to step away from the monitor while my stomach settles.

I hate to essentially say “ditto”, but I completely agree with this entire post. I also preferred when all the jumping was essentially optional and things like vistas I could take my time. If Anet continues in this direction I will be very unhappy.

I won’t quote the OP since it is rather long but I do agree with a lot of what is said. But I’m not sure about capturing Scarlet. She is very dangerous. I do think that the whole end scene could have been handled differently though. For instance, since Scarlet did everything in order to make the Breachmaker and drill a hole in LA, I would be as concerned with stopping the drilling as with detaining Scarlet. I realize that the drilling had to happen to further the plot, but I would have been trying to get past Scarlet to get to that control panel. If we had to kill her to get to it, and then we got to it too late, that would have resulted in the same story without it seeming like we just wanted to kill her for retribution. And without it looking like we were stupidly ignoring the Breachmaker.

"Consume All" - Quality of Live

I’m saying “consume all” can potentially break an RNG.

I get what you mean, but what I’m saying would be purely optional and not only for RNG items but also for non RNG items.

Even if it was optional, how do you make sure each player understands the ramifications of opening all their boxes at one time? You would get so many complaints from players who did it and didn’t read the tooltip or whatever. It wouldn’t be worth it.

I do agree that it would work for things like Luck which always gives you the exact same thing though.

And as mentioned an addition to the UI to purchase a number at one time would be great.

Taimi, Jory and Kas and Offencive

For the love of the six gods, this setting was never about child geniuses playing with dragon magic like a 10 year old with play dough, it was about dark, deep, intense situations that forced the player to survive some of the worst possible things that a universe can “throw” at you.

Dragons destroying land is a good start, and taking lives away is yet another example of what the game needs.

It also needs signs of rebuilt civilization’s and signs that the races of Tyria are claiming land as well as loosing it.

Yet the struggle, the ambiance, the tone of joy against darkness feels wrong.

Take Dragon Bash.

Was Dragon Bash a good thing to have during the aftermath of Flame and Frost and the Southsun Cove events?

You’re going to suddenly make a happy joyous festivity out of a freaking slaughter?

I get the point, I do, but it feels like its delivered wrong.

And Taimi serves to prove what I’m trying to convey.

She isn’t a bad character, but she lacks the characteristics that make her apart of the ambiance naturally, rather instead, shes supposed to come across as some strong kid were all rooting for when really its like putting a brilliant minded child with epic machines in the middle of a dragon infested to- oh wait.

Continuity issues with personal story Maps

I’m really glad that Anet is looking into what can be done about this. But throughout the past year+ of the Living Story there have been a large number of issues for which the question has been “why didn’t they consider this before implementing the Living Story and create a solution for it then”? And most of these questions seem very obvious.

But the issue isn’t that it wasn’t considered, the issue is that they considered it and there is currently nothing they can do about it. Even if they considered it before destroying Lion’s Arch, what choice do they have? Either freeze Tyria in time and never change any map ever if it’s part of the Personal Story, or the path they went down? Personally I support the path they went down. I really hate that Lion’s Arch is rubble when I do Personal Story instances there – it makes no sense and I think it would be awesome if Lion’s Arch as it was stayed preserved by instances. I am really disappointed to hear they currently can’t change it (I suspected it was the case because they hadn’t done so by now) but if there is a reasonable solution to the problem, I’m sure they will implement it. Until then we just have to deal with it.

They should have considered it BEFORE implementing the ENTIRE Living Story.

So because they don’t have a solution yet, they would have postphoned the whole living story? Then how could they even be able to intergrate new content? I think it’s quite understandable that the player base would collapse if there was no new content for more then a year.

You understand that the Living Story as a concept was started over a year ago, right? I’m saying that they should have had a solution to these issues before they started the entire Living Story concept.
