And yes, you and I are expert players with full ascended gear, and an invisible bag full of potions but not everybody preps like that. An average player won’t be able to pick up mastery points at a quarter of the speed of a hardcore player. That hurts the game because by the time someone’s unlocked the appropriate masteries, they’ve run through the map to the point where it’s boring. Their only reward was something that would have made the map more fun at the start, but they’ve spent four hours on that map, and want to go do something else. And then they do.

I completely agree. You enter HoT in Verdant Brink where it is so much easier when you have Lean Flying, Mushrooms, Wallows, etc. But most of the time you spend in that map from day 1, you don’t have these Masteries. By the time you get them you are in another map where you don’t need them.

Very poor design. I hated Verdant Brink for this reason.

Pick any facet of a product in isolation and you will find things you like and dislike.

There is a huge difference between core Tyria and HoT. HoT was added to GW2, it is not inherent to the original game. Some people are clearly stating that they don’t like what was added. CocaCola changed Original Coke to New Coke. Customers expressed their dislike and it was changed back. I don’t expect Anet to remove HoT but there is nothing wrong with expressing your dislike of a change.

As for Skor, LOTR, Rift, GW2, TSW… ‘I’m sick and tired of finding an MMO I enjoy’.

At some point you need to work out for yourself why you are not happy.

If you look at the entire sentence, you will be able to see that he already said why he was not happy:

I’m sick and tired of finding an MMO I enjoy, only to see the first expansion fundamentally change the game I was playing.

Confused with armor skins.

I need a certain item to put it on the armor.

Are you talking about Transmutation charges? You can get them free in game. Completely explore a city on any one of your chars and you’ll get one. You’ll usually get one if you completely explore a map and you can get them from sPvP and WvW reward tracks.

Don’t forget: if he purchased armor skins from the Gem Store, they don’t need Transmutation Charges the first time. The item you get in the mail works for free the first time. Just double-click it and apply to the armor you want. However after you use the items you get in the mail, they disappear and you will need Transmutation Charges to use that skin going forward.

Djinn.9245

My take on it is this: Anet wrote themselves into a corner when they decided there would be not one, but six impossibly huge world destroying beings for us to fight. So to prevent each new expansion from being: Amass dragon fighting army>learn dragon’s weakness>kill dragon, they’re now coming up with ways to write off the rest of the dragons as quickly as possible so they can make up some new crap for us to kill.

See thats how it feels but to me it should of never been this way.

After defeating Zhaitan i totally thought we were gonna get some small missions that felt like big deals.

No Anet went with after a huge long war, right back into it with scarlett, her cronys and the awakening of morde.

I really felt that after Zhaitan we would of gotten more missions against bandits and thieves, since food and communitys would be so different after the deaths of so many of its people. Also think of the people involved as well. Asura use there technology to gain advantages. Charrs and humans a mix of both and Norn mostly us face to face combat. The Sylvari as a group would have far less of a population so if thousands of them died that would hit there community so hard.

For me HOT was a real chance for Anet to get creative and give us some unique story lines and different types of game play.

I mean just look at this last living story, they threw out a human god. Thats probably what they whould of done after Zhaitan. A elder dragon is defeated so there is so much free magic going around that human gods come back, mursaat , the jotun find a way to create what they once had.

GW2 has such a rich history of different potential lores. For instance when Braham came back, he might of found what happened to the dead spirit gods of the norn.

Thats why im so frustrated with HOT story. I mean for me that ZHaitan story with all the dungeons was pretty epic, it was just missing a epic boss fight/dungeon battle.

I personally am tired of the progression of fighting bigger and bigger enemies. An RPG doesn’t have to always be about killing stuff.

And assuming GW2 lasts for years longer, where is the progression going to go? We’ve decided that killing off all the dragons is a bad idea and they were the biggest enemies Tyria has left. So now Anet is having us fight the gods? Are we now going to fight them one after the other? What they’re having our characters do is just crazy.

If 5 people can kill them, that isn’t very “legendary”.

And I think they must be too weak because when one pops I can’t get to it before it’s dead even if I drop what I’m doing and go straight there and it’s only in the next fort over (not 1/2 map away or anything).

I just get the Stabilizer on as many characters as I play relatively often, as the Stabilizer is great for Daily Map events.

Otherwise, I doubt it makes a difference. (It’s probably account-wide, as far as story goes, like the other Current Events.)

I didn’t realize that the rifts counted as events for the Daily. I’ll have to try to get more Stabilizers also, assuming Anet fixes the ability to start the process.

Sorry, we had no such advantage when we killed Zhaitan.

We had the pact, the airship fleet, we had the knowledge of what to do to make Zhaitan weak (we killed his eyes and mouth) and we had the Asura tech which was ultimately what killed him.

The end of the Zhaitan fight was certainly better than others. Usually the Commander is the one who fights the bosses. In that fight we simply helped protect Zojja. So I agree about that one fight.

The armies of the world were not able to deal with any of the Elder Dragons for years and years. Entire civilizations were ruined or forced to move by them (Orr, Zephyrites, Asura, Kodan, Quaggan, Norn).

None of them were united. That’s sort of the main theme of gw2. The Dragons are stronger than each race, but united (and with the appropriate amount of knowledge and asura tech) we are stronger.

Sorry, we had no such advantage when we killed Zhaitan.

The army of the entire world (the Pact) was taken down by Mordremoth. Yet our PC, assisted (?) by a handful of associates, will deal with these ancient beings!

This was because the Pact were overconfident. They blinded flew into the jungle and expected to win through firepower alone. It also didn’t help that the sylvari were turned when battle commenced.
We learnt the ways of the jungle and from the mistakes of the Pact. Then we allied with those who lived there and thus were able to turn the tide and defeat Mordremoth.

How did us learning the ways of the jungle help us to kill Mordremoth exactly?

Heavy armor looks awesome – shiny and “legendary”. Medium and Light look simply like regular armor where parts appear and move a bit. They aren’t particularly nice looking either. Meh. They don’t compare to Ardent Glorious, Illustrious, Radiant, Triumphant Hero, etc.

If I was going to go to the trouble of making Legendary Armor, I would only go for the Heavy.

Really? Maybe I just spend my time in the wrong maps, are there any that are more/less prone to getting rifts?

I don’t think so. I mostly go to maps when the Daily Event completer is there. So I’m looking for events and see rift dots quite frequently. Unfortunately you can only tell that they’re rift dots if you know where events usually spawn on that map so you know that the dot you’re looking at isn’t a regular map event. I wish that Anet would have made the rift dots different.

Maybe it has to do with the number of players on the map?

I Need Some Advice

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I first started GW2 in beta because a few friends from another MMO were also starting it. Given the progression of the game, I decided early on that I was not going to try to “keep up” because I didn’t like the hectic pace. Luckily Anet redid the Living Story so that we can go back and do it at our own pace. So I do whatever strikes my fancy on the day that I log in. I don’t have any specific thing that keeps me playing besides just enjoying the game.

But if you do enjoy having a particular goal, I saw a post by someone who made his own goal. He collects every single alcohol-related thing / event in the game. Its funny because he said he doesn’t personally even drink lol. I think it’s great when people can come up with their own goal like that.

The rifts don’t automatically open anymore, so you’ll need to find someone to open one for you. Unopened rifts are marked as nearby events and can be found in various maps. Since they’re an easy way to complete events, you may want to try finding one in a map where it’s the daily to complete events.

The very first rift that started the sequence to receive a Stabilizer was always automatic. Did Anet say that they changed that so you have to depend on another player for your ability to get a Stabilizer?

I think it’s not that there is anything wrong with the body looking like a ship, its just that it’s so “kitchy” that makes it kind of silly. The ship looks kind-of cartoonish instead of threatening.

There are a couple of niche uses for luck:

  • Guild Halls need it at various stages, so you could sell (or volunteer) your luck to those in need. (Requires a free guild slot.)
  • A tiny number of mystic forge recipes use luck.

I agree with Djinn that I want ANet to provide a useful sink.
(I don’t agree that it’s bad for the game that some things have no value; it’s annoying, which is a good enough reason to change it.)

Its not bad for the game for “things” to have no value, its bad for things that are given as a reward to have no value.

Other players joining and kicking people.

So I’ve recently returned to this game and have started checking out the raids.

I always loved this game for the community, however the behaviour of some people in the raiding scene is disgusting.

There was myself and 2 other players sat waiting patiently for roughly 30 minutes only for then a commander to join our raid group and instantly start kicking members and then proceeds to sit in the Aerodrome after ruining our squad.

How is this allowed for someone to just join a group and have permission to start kicking people off the bat and does the LFG Abuse report actually work?

It’s sad to witness this behaviour and previous behaviour amongst the raiding community =/

Wow, this sounds terrible. I had no idea that some random Commander could take over someone else’s group like that. I guess forming a LFM for raiding is out the window for me now. Thanks for the warning.

Its not about anything being blacker, its how the weapon looks thematically. Right now, it is a cake on a stick. Sunrise is not a super dark legendary and still looks more serious than FoW.

FoW is probably one of the MOST serious weapons in the game. It is a holy symbol to the god of fire. Has litteral cultists summoning him. I can agree that it could get a size decrease by probably 10% but it is a serious weapon all the way through.

Except that’s not what it looks like unless you look at it up close. Those who are talking about FoW looking like cake or candelabra or whatever are talking about how it looks from a reasonable distance.

If you see someone run by it looks like they are carrying cake on a stick. YOU many know what it really is, but that doesn’t matter to all those who don’t.

I actually like HMS Divinity

So did the developers, and they were all O_o that players put it into the “silly” bucket!

I’ll bet they’re also surprised that there are players that put this one in the “silly” category.

I can’t speak for anet, but I’m certainly shocked at the angry responses. I love the look of it, and honestly, I was more disappointed when it turns out to be cultists rather than just candles.

Were there “angry” responses? I saw disappointed and critical responses. I’ll have to reread because I don’t remember anger.

Improvised weapons for magic are awesome. I wish I used a focus on my necro so I could use the improvised one, that lil voodoo doll look, so good!

Not everything needs to be giant swords done in blacker than black to turn up the serious.

…but then, abyss black or whatever the dye is gets so much love, and I think it looks dreadful because all the detail vanishes into nothing but gloom…

Luckily GW2 doesn’t have a lot of black, serious looking prestige weapons. They glow, or flame, or any number of other interesting and powerful-looking effects. But you don’t have to be super-serious to prefer your adventurer be carrying something that looks like an actual weapon vs. something silly.

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t care that there is silly in GW2. I just personally prefer things that look like actual weapons and am disappointed when Anet releases something like this because that = one less thing for me. Others are excited because they prefer silly, and that’s fine, I’m just expressing my opinion.

I really like it as it is. I don’t understand why other people don’t.

Are you being sarcastic? Because if you are not, I seriously question your taste.

I hate to break it to you, but that candelabra can in no way be looked upon as a “weapon”. It is piece of room decoration, not a weapon. Sure, there are other designs that can’t be considered weapons and are merely created to be funny (like the Improvised Weapon set), but those aren’t legendaries!

IMO, there are way too many legendary weapon designs that are meant to be funny (disco balls, meteorological equipment, aquariums, ships, etc.), and those are not skins to wear with serious pride but in (good) fun. You have to be a somewhat “easily amused” type of character to actually consider those worthy of the legendary status (and worth your time, effort and resources as well).

Well a torch isnt really a weapon in the first place.

It’s a club that can set you on fire…

But would you be swinging it around with the intention to use as a weapon?

If I was in a dungeon using a torch for lighting, and an enemy attacked me, I would certainly try to hit them with it given the alternatives.

Hey, look at that! Agreement reached on an internet forum between several people with different outlooks? I guess there’s a first time for everything. I’m with you guys. I have my preferences, but I don’t need to have it all my way.

I think they’ve done a pretty good job of correcting with the map design in LS3. We now have 2:3 ratio in favor of flat maps. That’s probably (correct me if I’m wrong?) more palatable to players who prefer flat maps than the original HoT offerings.

As a player who prefers maps like Tangled Depths and Verdant Brink, I still consider the flat maps in LS3 better than any of the core Tyria offerings. But the vertical maps, while good, feel like map-lite. BF is a tiny map and DM feels full of unused space. Probably due to the time crunch. I hope to see something more like a TD in the next expansion.

The other problem I have with LS3 the reward pool feels too shallow. I want to spend time on these maps, but I don’t have a goal to work toward. The shared currency between maps (unbound magic) has potential, but I feel it’s being underutilized. This may relate to the time crunch, but perhaps it can be addressed after the storyline is completed.

that’s it in a nutshell, having a ratio of maps where the majority is flat but there is complex maps in the mix is reasonable and fair and gives everyone what they want. This is why someone arguing about a zone in isolation and asserting the whole game is ruined is not getting what a mmorpg is about. The virtual world as a cohesive whole, not just the latest extension that you happen to like/dislike. Part of this viewpoint is a learned behavior from older mmorpg where latest expansion = rest of world is killed off i suspect, but that’s not the case in GW2.

Not sure why you are accusing someone of “not getting” MMOs when they are simply expressing their opinion. Even if it is true that the world is a cohesive whole (not sure I agree, if a fantasy MMO suddenly introduced spaceships, for instance), that doesn’t mean that someone can’t have an opinion that certain added content ruined it for that person.

It actually is a serious Legendary. I looked it up and found

Flames of War is a Balthazar-themed torch. Acolytes, clad in red cowls, form a circle around the top of the torch, which resembles a summoning circle, surrounded by candles.” (and if you look you can see Balthazar in the summoning circle).

Which is nice to know cuz before I wiki’d it, I thought it was a cake surrounded by candles.

People can call it serious all they like, the problem is that you can’t see the detail so the detail doesn’t matter. What does matter is that from a normal perspective it looks like a cake.

Its like Graphic Design: if you design a poster but make the type too small for people to read without walking right up to it, you failed.

Labjax, it may be because you took a break from the game but I can assure you that people that play higher end content can survive the jungle in zerker gear. The people who follow the meta tend to get zerker gear, but I have plenty of people in my guild who use other options, because it’s a casual guild. They didn’t have to change their armor at all.

A lot of it really is just knowing the enemy to survive.

I’ll also say he is right about the masteries, its way easier to navigate with better gliding, access to mushrooms, and wallows. Early on its most difficult to navigate, at the same time you need the dynamic events that you dont know how to get to easily. When you have masteries, you can hop on a shroom, glide to an updraft, etc, but early on you have to take a longer roundabout path that is not nearly so obvious.

Starting in VB was a terrible idea. You start with basic gliding and when you run out of steam so much of the map has the vine floor that eats you. Or you might be up in the canopy when you run out. Its very disheartening that you often find nowhere to land that isn’t instant death. AB should be the intro map.

3 is the major flaw, these maps are really good/funnest when are experienced with them. you can move around fairly quickly, but its not very boring, and a lot of variation within each map.

however the curve is steep and its very hard to achieve anything or participate in the map early on, which is when you most need to particpate (for mastery exp)

I have played these maps a lot. But I still can’t get somewhere that I want about 40-80% of the time (depending on the map).

Mounts [merged]

Technically we already have mounts in the game. Same movement speed but still a mount of sorts. Flying broom stick and magic carpet come to mind. We do not need to become WoW just stop. Mounts of that nature are not needed in this game.

It would probably satisfy most of the calls for mounts that crop up every so often if Anet used this system to implement some creature mounts. There are a number of creatures in the game that could serve as mounts, and it shouldn’t be too big of a job to modify those assets and add in animations to have them rideable. Surely much less effort than adding a separate, more comprehensive mount system.

I completely agree. Since we can already “ride” brooms, they should be able to add horses, motorcycles, etc. that we can “ride” in the same manner. Same for gliders – since we can be portrayed standing on a glider I don’t see why we couldn’t be portrayed mounted on a creature glider.

There has also been a discussion of movement speed. Since the game already has non-ability permanent movement speed via runes, etc I think a non-stacking mount speed would be fine.

CoT was supposed to make players cry. Which is fine if it was completely optional. But Anet decided to lock an unrelated achievement behind it which I hate. JP in general should be there only for people who enjoy them. Locking other achievements behind JP is trying to force players to do JP.

One more time: “play your own way” – bull.

In gw2, after exploring a map…. the map stays revealed and it is easy to see where you need to go….. However in HoT the minimap doesn’t support the multitiered maps… the minimap gives confusing directions on multitiered maps. Since the minimaps don’t work you have to memorize the maps

This is only true for a while. Then you learn the specifics of the map and the events and it’s no longer confusing.

I disagree with your generalized statement. Perhaps you should replace “you” with “I” because it certainly isn’t true for everyone.

HoT doesn’t seem any more mob-dense than core maps to me. If anything, it’s easier to find a safe place to collect your thoughts because you can glide and enemies can’t. But I suppose if you find those enemies truly threatening, then it might seem that they are everywhere and you can’t catch a break from them.

Some people find it easy to go from 2 dimensions to 3 dimensions. Others don’t.

I also don’t see how the layouts hinder “casual exploration”. I could tell right away that I wasn’t going to figure out these maps in a day.

You just answered your own question.

So instead of worrying about it, I just played until it started to make sense. I did this for every HoT map, including Tangled Depths (which became my favorite map!).

I have been playing the HoT maps since they came out and I still can’t find my way around them. I was doing the Wyvern event in Verdant Brink and got knocked off the cliff. Because there were so many other things going on and mobs to worry about in addition to the terrain, I never found my way back up there.

The waypoints don’t strike me as much of an issue either, as masteries usually give us alternative means of getting where we need to be. I hear a lot of complaints about contested waypoints in TD, for instance. Yet I know from experience that a player can walk into that map with no waypoints unlocked and have every single waypoint available in under 10 minutes (did it in 7 minutes on my thief, in fact). That’s almost certainly faster than navigating a core Tyria map. So is it really contested waypoints that are the problem, or the fact that the people complaining about them never learned their way around in the first place?

What does unlocking Waypoints have to do with them being contested?

What is so good about trenchcoats?

In a game where fashion is emphasized so much by Anet, it would seem to be obvious that having a large variety of different looks would be preferable to the majority of looks being very similar. So the most logical answer that I can think of is that Anet only creates a few non-trenchcoat medium armor because it is somehow more difficult. Why is something that only they know.

Anet wrote her death as though she wasn’t an experienced warrior.

You are entirely wrong and I’ll go with each and every sentence to prove you wrong.

Broken and bruised? I imagine that is the natural state of every Norn.

It’s not the natural state of every norn to have been imprisoned for a long period of time and to have suffered under such conditions, especially being the prisoner of an elder dragon.

Betrayed? How does that affect how she dies?

An otherwise glorious death can be tainted by the act of a betrayal, removing the value of that death due to the cowardly nature that is betrayal. A glorious death is a fair fight and betrayal absolutely, in every case, makes it no longer a fair fight.

If betrayal makes you simply give up and let yourself be killed, you aren’t much of a warrior. But maybe in bad writing that’s how it is. Not like Eir shouldn’t have had a clue that Faolain might betray her lol.

Weaponless? So if you don’t have a weapon you just give up and die? Even Faolain was better and AFAIK she wasn’t a warrior. She grabbed a thorn to use as an improvised weapon! Anet wrote Eir just standing there and nodding.

No, because you see, Eir was fleeing for her life after having already been imprisoned by an elder dragon.

So was Faolain…

Now, you are just trolling in a spiteful way in regards to Eir’s character, or you have some distorted imagination on what’s a “warrior” or not. Probably because you think Rambo, G.I. Joe or other “macho” fighters are how to portray them correctly, and you consider as a result Eir and Taimi as a “blasphemy” to these standards.

I’m not being spiteful to Eir’s character, I don’t like the way that her death, or Taimi in general, are written.

you also seem to forget that Eir survived a plummeling from the sky, and has been in a cage without sleep, food or water for a while, Let’s see you fight off a vinetooth on your own. Faolain knew not everyone was gonna survive, so she made sure at least one other was a proper meal for the vinetooth.
Eir might’ve also had her guard down because at the time the vinetooth wasn’t there yet and she thought she was rescued

I’m not saying she would definitely succeed, I’m saying she didn’t even try. There are RL war vets that were captured, starved, and tortured but still tried to fight when given the chance. Some even succeeded. That is a real warrior. Eir wasn’t just some nameless norn, she was a famous warrior. She should have been better than that.

thanks, i didnt know its made for real cash -> gems -> chest.
i need a bank for saving gold so i can send some gold to it like irl bank
so i cant touch it. i made guild but then i need members for get favor or something to buy a bank its bad.

Whether you purchase gems with in-game gold or with RL money, spending your gems on gambling may sound fun (I might get a cool thing!) but gambling is always weighed so that you are more likely to get something small that you didn’t want (as you did). People are sometimes fooled into thinking that in-game gambling gets you good stuff because they see players, in-game or in a video, getting something nice. But people are more likely to brag about the cool thing they got so you don’t hear about all the failures.

I agree it was a horrible death, but not because of Eir’s situation – because of horrible writing.

i just bought a new chest for 250 gems all my gold gone i hoped for something nice but i got a green skin worth 1 gold.
WHY ANET i am so unlucky? what do i have do wrong?
everything i do ingame fails i cant make more then 100 gold.
rich ppl keep rich becouse they now can buy the new minis and sell them later for more.
its frustrating. i got tips from a guildy how to make gold but that was long ago, nothing works anymore then farming.
i want to play this game but i also want to buy nice items but with no gold no items for me. yes i got 2 fresh water pearls in 1 minute gathering but rng on low price items i need more.
i bought 1 chest for 73 gold and rich ppl who pay 1k gems get 5 chests…
pls make something for easy money exept real life cash.
srry if i make a new topic but i dont understand this rng i need gold

It sounds like the reason you don’t have gold is because you spend it on gambling (RNG). Gambling in-game isn’t any different than IRL: you can spend all your money on gambling but if you lose (as the odds say you probably will), then you have no money.

I used to occasionally purchase keys to open BL chests, but a wonderful post showed me that I was better off saving my cash and buying things I actually want on the TP.

Its not reasonable to expect people who are paying to have fun to spend their “play” time not having fun. Customers telling you that they do not like aspects of your product is kind of important if you want to continue to sell to them in the future.

You seem to assume all the players have the same tastes and want the same things. This obviously isn’t the case. And frankly, you don’t even need to read threads like this to know this is an unreasonable assumption. You just need to have had contacts with people.

I’m just curious: how did you read the post you quoted and get “you seem to assume all the players have the same tastes and want the same things”?

Read my next comment, it has it explained.

I guess you must be responding to me, though you don’t quote my post. But no, I’m not going to read a different post to understand this post. I want to know how you go to your conclusion from the post you actually quoted.
