I’m not really hating the Mesmer, I’m currently playing one. I liked it enough to level it up, and I think it’s a pretty amazing class. It’s the fact that people think this class needs to be even better that boggles my mind.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
Movement speed is not a requirement. If you feel required to have a focus, that’s your problem. A focus is not a required weapon for a Mesmer.
Mesmers at a disadvantage? Come on. Mesmers are hands down one of the strongest classes in the game. When’s the last time you heard someone ask for a Ranger? Hey, we need your bear pet to help us skip an entire jumping puzzle or move the entire zerg into an ambush.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
Not ever class will have a passive speed boost just as not every class will not be getting portals. Giving every class the same abilities is not how to balance things. Technically, it would actually balance things, but it would make every class the same, which would be pretty dumb.
Everyone gets their own way of increasing movement and some will be better at it than others. The Mesmer already has so many other abilities that other classes don’t have.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
Quickness: Double attack speed
Swiftness: increase movement speed by 35%
Where are you getting this attack speed from? Where did I start talking about it? After you brought it up. Nobody is talking about attack speed except for you.
You want increased movement speed without using the focus. I want increased movement speed on a thief without using a utility slot. I am telling you that increased movement speed is a boon, it is not something that people are entitled to just have. Every class has ways to increase movement speed at the cost of something.
You need to go back and re-read.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
You do realize that swiftness is movement speed right? I think you need to work on your reading comprehension.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
That’s quickness. Nobody is talking about quickness.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
I don’t think anyone should be telling us to use Focus. What if I don’t effing want to?
Then you don’t get swiftness. Swiftness is a boon, not something you’re entitled to.
What if I don’t want to waste a utility on my thief for the speed boost? Then I’m stuck with normal walking speed because I don’t get swiftness.

It was not a huge nerf in the least. It was an incredibly insignificant change that still left an Elementalist at being more mobile than any other class in the game.
Please stop over dramatizing things. You guys act like Elementalists are suddenly useless.

At level 40 you get the 20 point traits, with that came the ability to create a clone on dodge. This drastically changed the Mesmer to be a far more entertaining class for me as I was pooping out clones and shattering like a mad man. It gets A LOT better.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
You guys must have never played a Guardian. I really don’t think Mesmers are that slow.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
It wouldn’t make any sense. The Elementalist is the magician class, with staves, scepters, daggers, foci and wizardly things.
The “battle mage” class is the Mesmer.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
Most of your points are good, but the one about thieves not being specced for support is a little irritating. Thieves have very little in the way of supporting allies. We can stealth people, and that’s about it. We can’t offer much healing or cure conditions. The one way we have of granting boons is tied to stealing which has a long cooldown and requires traits. It also requires allies to be within melee range which often doesn’t happen with unorganized pugs. Our traps often suck because they don’t help much on large mobs and plain don’t work on most bosses.
The one significant thing we have for support is shadow refuge. It heals a small amount, but more importantly has a very long stealth. It also has a long cooldown though, and when party members are not ready for it, they can make themselves immune to it making it useless. This is why it’s used sparingly.
The one thing i’d like to see other thieves use more often is smoke screen. It’s a wall that blocks projectiles, why does it seem like I am the only one who sees how useful that is? Still, that’s only when there are ranged mobs, which isn’t very often.
Thief really isn’t much of a group class, which is why I rarely use it for PvE. Thieves can’t offer nearly the support that my Elementalist or Guardian can.
With that said, being able to deal insane amounts of damage is actually very supportive for the group, assuming the thief is skilled enough to not die. Taking out those acolytes in 2 hits in CoF for example is very useful.
So really, my only problems with thieves are when they don’t use smoke screen when there’s a lot of ranged mobs or the ones who die a lot.
Oh, and the not resurrecting thing. I hate it when people try to pick up downed players instead of finishing a weak mob. Killing a mob gives everyone rally. If you stop to res people instead of killing off a weak target, you’re doing it wrong.
Anyway, this topic is less about etiquette and more about being experienced. You are going to find people who don’t know the game very well when you pug. Most of this topic, while not wrong, is a little excessive.

That is a consumable item. I forget where to purchase it, but it replaces your weapon with 3 crappy skills.

Staff is definitely great for skipping trash. The swiftness and line of warding are great, but that’s about it IMO. So many people worship the staff because of the #4 by itself or combined with AH, but I don’t consider it to be all that great since I take advantage of a lot of combo fields.
Instead of using the staff now I use a hammer and the stability consecration. By using hammer #2 combined with my traits, I can get off 9 stacks of might with field effects. On top of that, hammer has immobilize, an aoe effect similar to line of warding, and a knockback making it better at control than the staff.
Since I started doing this, the staff has been pretty useless to me. The absolutely pathetic DPS of this weapon makes it useless. There’s a better way to accomplish what the staff has to offer.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
I would say Engineer is the least fitting class for Asura because all of the tech they use is Charr. They need to change the skins of the engineer class for the Asura or else this class will never make any sense for one. All of the skins are already in the game, they just need to change them for Asura.
Necromancer is definitely much more fitting.

Subject Alpha! I love a boss with recognizable attacks that must be dodged or else you die. It makes the fight so much more entertaining for me.

AC is very easy… All you have to do is learn the mechanics of the dungeon. I am completely blown away by how anyone can’t figure this out.
Instead of spending time thinking this or that should be nerfed, spend some time figuring out how you can complete something. You will have a much better time.

The cd is usually up by the time I use my conjured weapon and the second one with the exception of the fire sword. The difference here is that other players can also use them.
Also, I would never want to exclusively use a conjured weapon. I see them as yet another set of 5 skills to use in addition to my 20, so the cd doesn’t really matter.
I see them as a magical item that gets used up. It would be weird for it to last forever without needing to be “recharged”.

If there is a bug, it’s all the more reason to completely revamp this boss. As the dev said before, the nerf is just a short term thing. He wants to completely redo that part of the fight with something that doesn’t involve healing. If they do to Simin what they did to AC, that would be great.

I used it on my first character quite a bit, but have moved away from it since. It’s still a great skill though that adds a much needed poison ability to some classes that don’t have it, like Elementalist.

I also like having aegis up when I don’t have a shield, like when I have a greatsword. I see where you’re coming from with it covering shields though.
It would be nice if it would instead “enhance” the shield somehow instead of covering it or only show up in combat.

I’m getting a little bored with always winning.
JQ has 7 match wins since week 40 (Oct 6 – Oct 13). The server with the most match wins over that same time frame has double that (14 wins), including a string of 11 wins in a row. So …. bored? Okay.

I dislike it. Because of the reason that gull group counts more than player’s skill. Pre-update the path’s 1 and 3 could be done by 2 people in 6-7 and 10-11 minutes without doing mistakes. Now the dungeon is just a cruel pain trying to solo or duo but even easier in a 5 men group. So, 5 completely new players are more efficient than 2 perfectly playing ones. And this isnt my interpretion of good game design.
I don’t think you know what “MMO” means.

The new AC is exactly what I want to see done with dungeons. The new mechanics are absolutely great. It requires you to learn them and play as a team with your group. It will get people to start looking at each of their individual abilities and how they can be used.
AC is a massive step in the right direction.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
I think it’s a significant improvement over old AC for both experienced and inexperienced players. Yes the dungeon is harder, yes it requires coordination, and yes it requires wiping a few times to learn the mechanics. These encourage you to work as a team, the importance of ressing downed teammates, the importance of adjusting weapons/utility skills for different areas, importance of dodging and being aware of your surroundings.
This cannot be said enough. The GW2 community needs to learn to play as a team rather than doing whatever.
For example, I ran AC on my Guardian right after the patch with a pug. Shortly into path 1 right before the part with Hodgins, I asked if the Ele in the group could drop a Fiery Greatsword for me to use on the burrows. (This works much, much faster than the Ice Bow if you know how to use it) She responded with, “I’ll do what I want” and immediately started the event only using an Ice Bow and died shortly in. If she had instead bothered to listen to why I wanted the Fiery Greatsword instead of the Ice Bow, the event would have been over in seconds, but Hodgins ended up dying because I was the only one left to destroy the burrows and I couldn’t protect him.
This is a perfect example of how poor the teamwork is in GW2. We need dungeons with harder mechanics so that people learn to play with one another rather than “doing what I want”.

Story modes are the introductory dungeons for new players. The only reason people have to do the explore modes is to get tokens needed for level 80 gear.

This dungeon is mechanics more than anything. People are putting way too much importance on level and numbers, especially when level 80s get scaled down into the ground. If you learn the mechanics this dungeon is not difficult.

The Asura are not a morally perfect race of peace loving hippies. There are good Asura sure, but mad scientists are also pretty common. There are plenty who would consider scientific advancement as the single most important thing and ignore anything that gets in the way of that, like ethics.

Yeah… I was worried when I heard rumors from people saying that path 2 was impossible. Then I went and did it in one shot. I’m starting to wonder if common sense is actually common.

I’ve played a lot of games in the past where it was all over if someone went down. I don’t think it’s broken if you lose when someone makes a mistake. You need to coordinate.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
I know you don’t want to think this is a l2p issue, but it really is a l2p issue. If someone is dies, you messed up. To complete this fight you really do have to master the dodging mechanic. You should practice on an easier boss if you have an issue here. For example, the cave troll in AC. He has a large aoe attack that he uses often, but the majority of people seem to react to this by getting out of the aoe area. If you watch his animation and simply dodge as the attack goes off instead, you can stay at melee range.
It is easiest here if you stay at melee range and dodge as the attack goes off. Once you master this mechanic you have mastered this fight.

I used to hate this fractal when I first started as well, but then I learned the map and now this is my favorite one. Once you get to level 10+ this map is almost always completed on the first attempt, because by that time everyone has had enough experience here to get this done with ease, making this the fastest and easiest fractal.
Maybe they should let you have a little bit more time to complete it at level 1-9, so that new players have an easier time learning it, but ultimately I don’t think this one is too much of a challenge.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
There are times when certain bosses will instantly destroy a rangers pets, times when pets are useless, or times when they flat out disrupt certain mechanics. One example is the dredge fractal boss, if the pet grabs aggro, it’s not possible to drag the boss to the lava. Because of that, a ranger can’t use their pet there, because of that, rangers deal considerably less damage than other players.
I go with anyone when pugging and generally don’t care what class people are, but rangers are sometimes pretty frustrating when their pets do stupid things, so I can understand why some people don’t like being with them.

I’ve encountered someone on gw2lfg who would repeatedly post LF1M even when his group was far from full or non existent. Pretty dirty, yet funny and effective way to get people to join him. I think that most of the dungeons are fine as they are. The only thing I would like to see changed is a fix to all the exploits. People standing in a spot unable to get hit and just auto attacking the boss to death is getting really tiring.

There are times when range is 100% necessary. Off the top of my head I remember a boss in one of the Arah paths where there were geysers scattered about and everyone had to stand on one or else hordes of adds would spawn. This would require you to stand in one spot a good ways away from the boss.
In general there are several situations where range is just better, so yes, I always carry a staff around even if I prefer D/D. Staff is also much better than D/D against large groups.
