I don’t like Dragonhunter, here is why :

First point:
I think this name doesn’t fit in the guardian’s archetype

Hunter is in the rogue archetype.
Guardian is in the soldier archetype.

No matter how you twist it, the “hunter” name will stay in the rogue archetype.

You can make a hunter wearing heavy armor, using mace and shield or light magic, it will always be in the rogue archetype:
“Hunter” is connoted and you can’t break this connotation just because of your background: it won’t fit better to a soldier than a rogue archetype.

Second point:
It is very hard to justify this name

Dragon is a specific enemy.
By using this prefix, you close a lot of doors.
I see a centaur attacking my allies but nope, I won’t kill it because it is set in stone: I’m a Dragonhunter/slayer/bane/knight/whatever
I got that Dragon means Evil in Tyria but Witch hunter didn’t hunt bandits or scoundrels and as I have my root in the Guardian’s archetype, I have to keep defending people from this kind of enemies (or hunt them, the main purpose of this spec).

The only way to justify that a Dragoninsertname attack something which isn’t related to Dragon is to say that you have draconic magic in the game and a specialization use this magic.
It can fit with Silvary but it won’t fit with any of the other races.

Third point:
It is a very confusing name

Dragonhunter is both generic and specific.

It’s generic because like a lot people said : we tracked mordremoth during season 2 and that make all of us dragonhunter.

It’s very specific because you gave this class a specific goal : hunting dragons (and all their minions) and like I said before, it closes doors.

Why Sentinel should prevail:

Gameplay
Sentinel adapts to the soldier archetype.
Sentinel wears heavy armour and a longbow.
Sentinel sets traps to defend his camp.
Sentinel tracks intruders.

Background
Sentinels are border guard.
During wartime however the Border guard withdraw from the Border outposts and provide assistance in a limited capacity to the country’s regular army.
Wartime assistance of the Border guard to the Army is essential as they are familiar with the local terrain having patrolled it on a daily basis during peacetime.

It makes sense:
We are in a war against mordremoth, Guardian pursue mordrem intruders from inside frontier to the maguuma jungle.
They have to specialize themselves into Sentinels, becoming familiar with jungle threats.

As a sentinel, you learned how to prepare a battleground efficiently (traps) and how to always keep an advantage on your enemies (longbow).
Moreover, your mastery in this specialization allows you to keep enemies under control until allies comes (immobilize, cripple, stun).

As as sentinel, you’re not a lonely hunter tracking dragons/enemies, you’re a part of a team.

Extra!
-There is no religious connotation.
-It is flat enough to set up the roleplay that the player want.

Have another +1, this is really capturing all the reasons why Dragonhunter as a name should be changed.
And I like the reasoning for Sentinel as well.

Anet, pls? Can we have a word from you, are you going to listen to your fans… coming close to 2000 replies now, and you keep saying all things aren’t final in your preview streams, so surely you can adapt to make the guardian elite spec a popular choice too?

Given how everything is always still in the works during Ready Up or PoI, I highly doubt any aspect of HoT is 100% done yet.

So… think of it this way;

if you’re lucky to have a beta portal, you are guaranteed access to a closed beta with no pre-purchase necessary. I.e. you can try out and see if it strikes your fancy. And there’s no telling when a pre-purchase will become available, but we know that those with a beta portal will get access to the next closed beta.

Just to get back on topic; I think the special announcement is the rebuilding of Lion’s Arch and the player involvement in voting for names, etc. Not much content wise, but the WvW changes are simply changes to mechanics and not special per se.

LA was destroyed and has been in ruins for a long time, then it’s special – at least in Anet’s heads – to kick off a rebuilding event, whether it’s something we will be more involved in than just seeing our surroundings change.

Maybe a bit wistful, but coming to Ebonhawke and seeing that fortress. Then finding the cemetery with all those GW1 characters…

I’ll modify myself to say, respect is earned, shouldn’t be given just because you slap a title on. Same for commander tag, nobody is going to follow that dorito if that player doesn’t know what to do…

I still don’t get it why people like Tybalt; yes he made a sacrifice but so did Sieran and Forgal. And I want my Order of Whispers to be cool and professional agents, not a comic excuse like Tybalt.

Yes, he fell to protect LA at Claw Island but so did a bunch of others, and actually, if you think about it, closing the gate behind you and leaving 1 person to fight hordes of undead… do you REALLY think they lasted longer than 1 second and that actually it was the walled gate that ensured the getaway rather than the ultimately foolish sacrifice?

Claw Island is a great story chapter, but that sacrifice always felt really stupid and out of place.

Yea, Solomon Kane inspired me to think of a Puritan spec for Guardians before the Dragonhunter was revealed. But then I wanted pistol for ranged option, and possibly even sword for offhand.

Lightbringers are inherently Order of Whispers and shouldn’t be the name of the new Guardian elite spec. Then you’ll meet a bunch of Lightbringer NPCs and other players who call themselves the same.

Lighthunter or Lightseeker, even Lightcaster, Lightarrow, Lightwarden.

Shame we’re already Guardians, otherwise we could’ve adopted a bunch of titles like Honorguard, Lightguard, Blackguard, Shadowguard.

About the current topic; I feel that there’s 2 camps of names; one being too heavily tied up into a legal, justice system that I don’t like them as alternatives for the guardian elite (e.g. Arbiter, Inquisitor, etc.) and the other which is more generically named (and in my mind more fitting) such as Sentinel, Seeker, Warden, etc.

Seeker or Warden would also be much better; in fact I will play it regardless but I’ll like my main guardian less just because of the Dragonhunter name… feel exactly the same way about this as the “Dragonknight” in ESO… compared to the other class names, just too restrictive and constrained in scope. High concept but just not acknowledging that there’s more to it than hunting dragons and/or its minions.

However, I’m personally favourable to the Paragon since the Spear, Shield and Wings styled Virtues of the spec are one big rip off the Paragon. Not to mention that Paragons are known to be long distance battle commanders from GW1, with Keiran Thackery a former Ranger and a prominent commander of Lion’s Arch being Tyria’s first Paragon. The Paragon as a word also means the following;

- The embodiment of an ideal (Zeal, Radiance, Valor, Honor, Virtue?)
- Someone who is a model of perfection.
- To go beyond, to surpass, to excel, to triumph, to conquer (What is the biggest obstacle in Tyria? That would be the Dragons.)

It might be as abstract as the Dragonhunter if you erase the GW1 foundation but it would be a shame to do so. The only “new” thing that the Dragonhunter does that the Paragon couldn’t is lay traps. But that could be explained as an evolution of the Paragon thanks to Kieran Thackery’s past Ranger knowledge influencing the once Elona exclusive profession. The Tyrian Paragon could be influenced by Tyria and those who learnt the art from Kieran. As for the Longbow, Kieran’s weapon of choice was the Longbow, he was a Paragon that shunned the Spear.

Well, it was hardly an abuse until people started noticing what was happening, so you’d be punishing many players who just got all the achievements+titles for free automatically. It just happened as they created their character, nothing more.
So, they only need to make this mass removal tool (which is useful for Anet in any event for future use) and then they can iterate over the player base who got titles + achievement points they shouldn’t have had and then remove those again.

The other bug has already been fixed, so basically we’re waiting for that tool and the reversal of the consequences of the bug.

I’m remaining pessimistic as I think the trickles of information are coming in quite slow… so I think this week we’ll just see some more details on the WvW beta (which ofc only 5% of us will get to play anyway).

Voted accordingly and feel that too many voted with their hearts, over their heads, because I doubt we get to see a reveal on guild halls or challenging group content, although I’d love if it was that.

You’re every bit as entitled as you say yourself and it’s really not very appealing; this MMO has delivered on so many points and given it was B2P, the content – you got for LS1 and LS2 – was quite a lot even though much of it was temporary (at least up until LS2).

So, Anet aren’t guilty of tricking anyone with false advertising, and they don’t owe you anything.

One of the major features was ‘challenging group content’. Why couldn’t that include dungeons and Fractals?

Because they pretty much refuted it; and I rather believe it’s a matter of open world group/raid content they have in mind for new encounters. All speculation ofc, apart from the fact that they’re not working on new dungeons.

They originally said that normal game updates would continue… but April came and went without even a hint of a feature patch. Now May is half over and still no word on the next feature patch. I mean they’ve been working on 500 jewelcrafting for 2 years now, they could at least give us that.

Well, they said there wouldn’t be more story content because it couldn’t technically progress since HoT picks up immediately after the cut-scene with Pact assault crashing to bits.
But that shouldn’t bar them from dropping game updates with festivals, SAB, an event to help rebuild Lion’s Arch… imagine if we could have an update where people help out rebuilding LA and you gradually see it coming to life over a few months. Stuff to do and things to see while the (endless) waiting time for HoT could pass less noticeably.

This content draught has successfully made me shelf GW2 in favour of picking up GW1 again. (Although, not completely shelf, I log for a daily PvP match or so) I’ve got more content to play through – both for the first time and repeat – than in GW2 and might as well continue to work on my HoM for when HoT launches.

GW2 right now seems to think it’s ok you have to grind the same dungeons over and over, play more or less the same WvW matchups week after week, continue to test sPvP balancing for Anet for the second test season running – come on, anyone could see that imbalance of the leaderboards after 1 week. Having a test season run for 2 months is just slacking off and minimum effort on the PvP scene, it’s disheartening.
And we know there’s a brilliant team working on an xpac, it’s just a shame Anet seemingly put themselves completely at a handicap to push meaningful content updates to the live game while we wait for an unscheduled expansion…

I think the red fox is coming. The raccoon you can get if you get enough HoM points in GW1 (once they fix the current HoM issues). None of the HoM rewards should ever be gained without doing the GW1 requirements imo.

I was going to buy the GuildWars Trilogy and EoTN so I can get my HoM points, but after hearing about this bug, I think ill wait a while.

It will take you upwards of 3 months to get to 30/50 points anyway, so why not get it now so you’re set for when HoT launches and they fix the bug?

It’s not as if GW2 is being updated with new content at the moment, might as well go back and play GW1 for a bit?

Apart from soloable Victory or Death, there’s little in the way of new content. This game has done and redone it’s game mechanics so many times by now; all these feature packs setting things right that didn’t work the first time around.

However, those aside, I’m talking playable content. Even gw1 had more to do for its 10th anniversary just these last two weeks than gw2 in the past 2 months. Anet’s own old, discontinued/automated game!

I know we’re in for an xpac but noone knows when, and tournaments are only formats of existing content…

I’ll try again now that maybe everyone is done farming SW/DT for beta portal drops.

For a company of 300+ people, leaving the live game in such a draught while you expect everyone to wait 6 months or more for an xpac to launch, do you consider that healthy?

And to those about to say; “there’s plenty of stuff to do in game” – yes, lots of old content to play over and over and over and over and grind your heart out. But do you really want a stale game for another 3-6 months (because we can only assume as much since we have absolutely no official news or indication of release date)?

I don’t like the name either – but I’ll play it regardless of whether it gets changed.

Mostly because Dragonhunter sounds too restricted in function; its purpose is there to hunt dragons, but the guardians do so much more and it becomes restrictive. What do dragonhunter guardians do once the last Elder Dragon falls; put his boots on the wall and start working at a diner?

With ideas like light and virtues, bows and traps, it would make sense to consider some more generic names, i.e.

Lightcaster
Lightguard
White Arrow
Light Warden
Bastion
Lightbringer (sic, my favourite although ambiguous)

I would doubt it. I think this is for the next closed beta to test the PvE areas. I’m guessing Stronghold and the new WvW maps will be tested as they did with the open beta for Stronghold recently.

No, it quite aptly captures everything Gaile said and that other players then seemed to miss the point of. The fact that there was a misconception that getting a beta portal drop didn’t guarantee your closed beta spot.

Another point also came up, concerning getting beta access simply from being signed up for the newsletter – and that’s always been the case since that first announcement to enter the draw for closed beta access.

As for the insulting part, it’s only jab at all the players feeling entitled to rewards for no reason… and GW2 seems to have a majority of these players compared to other MMOs…

Exactly, I’m saying the same. I’m just sick of all the entitlement issues with so many of GW2 players on the official forums… it’s like they’ve never played an MMO before and expect to be handed everything on a silver platter without lifting a kittening finger for it.

It’s 3:30AM where they are. I don’t think they are reading the forums right now. They announced when it started but didn’t give a stop date. It’s reasonable to expect them to announce the stop date so that people can know to stop trying to get one.

Yes, but I seem to remember reading that starting April 28th, beta portals would drop for a week… but now I cannot find that quote again.

I kind of hope it’s not Paragon; because it means the paragon goes live without throwing spears getting implemented as a new weapon type. If the paragon now adopts the longbow as its new take on ranged weapon, that’s kind of sad and not fitting how I’d like to play with spear and shield.
