Put all the maps in "Ranked"

in PvP

Elegy.2159

I love Skyhammer, but there are good reasons some maps aren’t in ranked. Skyhammer is heavily in favor of cc oriented builds/professions (think necromancer, engineer). Spirit Watch is heavily in favor of movement oriented builds (thief, and again, engineer). They’re not in ranked because your team composition shouldn’t exclude you from the possibility to win.

The difference between those and Forest/Foefire, is everyone could theoretically be dumb enough to rush the NPC’s and die to them. It’s not profession specific or dependent on certain team compositions. If you don’t have a thief or engineer on your team, you’re not certainly screwed.

Capricorn is a different issue entirely, as underwater combat is so imbalanced it’s not even funny. Try to kill a ranger underwater, lol.

I don’t mind first-timers on my team in unranked. Ideally, they could work that out in practice or hotjoin, but those game modes aren’t very useful for learning a profession or build, unfortunately.

That said, I think the profession dailies are a problem. It’s making matchmaking even more difficult than it should be with all the profession duplicates. And to me, there’s a big difference between “I want to learn to play mesmer!” and “I need to win a match with this profession I don’t like or play, for the daily!”

I just ignore the profession specific ones on days where classes I play aren’t an option. But for the people who genuinely hate PvE or WvW, that’s not much of a solution. :c

I had a minionmancer on my team in unranked yesterday, and they played very well. Might have even been you, I rarely check account names.

This happens to me sometimes too. Last time, I checked the combat log – player hit you for 233 (or something) using Long Range Shot. I was fighting a ranger when I died and lagging really bad, so I assumed it was just lag. It’s happened before too and I didn’t bother to check combat log, but I do have lag spikes somewhat frequently (my ISP is terrible). It does put me in combat and remove health; it’s not just floaters. If I can grab a screenshot next time I will share.

im often put in combat upon respawn as engi, the mines from the minor master explosives trait often get triggered post mortem, making me dish out vuln stacks that last until after respawn.

This happens to me sometimes as well, though it’s unrelated to the lagdamage problem. Sometimes the turrets from my elite linger a little past death, keeping me in combat too. Not often, but worth mentioning.

I hope this dosen't happen outside of hotjoin

My unranked matches have been great today – people trying to win and very close matches. I have crap matchmaking days too, so I know how frustrating it can be. If you whisper me in game I’ll be happy to queue with you if you want! I don’t know that it’ll help, but it’s one of my superstitious ploys to get a good match, and sometimes it works for me on the off days (queueing with someone else, that is).

Does Anet cater to the Casuals?

in PvP

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

As someone who’s read the other thread, I think dismissing these concerns as “casual” is unfair. There are a lot of complaints about PvP in that thread, and a few of them could be described as “casual” concerns. The majority of people complained about verbal abuse in PvP though. I don’t care what kind of gamer you are, nobody enjoys that on the scale it happens in PvP. And the suggestions to rid yourself of chat don’t help when you’re playing to win. It happens a lot in mapchat, and almost as often in team chat. Who’s going to turn off team chat just to avoid being called a “kittening noob kitten sucking casual piece of kitten?” Everyone’s tolerance is a little different. This kind of thing doesn’t get to me much in terms of my personal feelings, but that doesn’t mean I can’t see it as the problem it is. Once in a while I get a whisper after a match from whoever was the target of it, asking what they did wrong. Well…nothing! Sometimes it’s what they did right – they took far, twice, or managed to rally, or some other game mechanic that’s totally appropriate to use.

Or, they did do something wrong, or a lot of things wrong! Let’s say it’s their first day in PvP and they wandered into the most inappropriate game mode for them. Or just played badly because it’s their first day, or first week, whatever. Explaining to them what the different game modes are for goes a lot further than insulting them. It actually helps everyone involved. Ditto with explaining the necessity for condi removal and stunbreaks in PvP, when they’ve come from PvE and have never really needed to use those things before.

This kind of bullying is present in every PvP game I’ve played, but that doesn’t make it okay. I feel that the PvP community should be more proactive about it. I’m often the only person in a match of 10 people to ask bullies to stop bullying, or to make the point that it is just bullying and can be ignored. When nobody says anything, it seems more common and accepted than it really is.

Practice, Play, Compete.

in PvP

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

Well it’s not like you’re gonna get any practice in hotjoin either.

Or in practice. I rarely learn anything useful about my profession or build in hotjoin or practice. Reason being, these areas are mostly zergfests where people are more interested in exploiting team imbalance than playing to win. For dailies, I assume. When I find a hotjoin with two balanced teams and the game is close, I get so happy. But inevitably there’s someone in mapchat saying “give me the point, I need it for daily” or “red wins for daily” or something like that.

Unranked, or “Play” is completely appropriate for newbies, in my opinion. I mostly see the intent to win in unranked (on both sides) so at least it’s a real game that will give a newbie real experience playing PvP. But it doesn’t affect the leaderboard, so losing isn’t a huge deal compared to ranked.

This is pretty much my experience in the Silverwastes as well. I’ve never seen an Anet employee doing what you saw them doing (nor do I assume they were doing it for any specific purpose – they could have been working) but I’m with you on the non-participation/refusing to rez points. I often solo events there since I don’t want them to fail. I’d like to actually get the map to breach. While I’m soloing defense though, people run by, get a chest, and keep running. Rarely do they stop to actually complete an event.

Just the other day I died while defending blue. I managed to rocket boots far enough away from the mobs to lose aggro, and went down. I was full of bleed/torment/poison though, and wasn’t going to rally. While I was laying there about to die, someone ran right over me lol. I’m an asura, so I whispered them thinking they maybe just didn’t see me. Would you help me up, please? Their response – WP. Oh gee thanks, hadn’t thought of using the WP at Camp Resolve and running back to Blue tysm!

Tips to rejoin the battles? Minimap?

in PvP

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

I currently play a thief And I focus on two things: 1) flip any points and start the score ticking for my team, and 2) Plus-1 any important fights.

This is a good strategy! Aside from looking at the minimap and trying to figure out how to do one of these two things, the best advice I have is trying to communicate with your team.

I know typing while in a match is often impossible (and few people who soloQ try to use teamspeak), so try to encourage your team to use ping or lines on the minimap if they’re able, and do the same for them. They should be aware that you’ve been defeated and are about to respawn. Someone on your team may have a vantage point that lets them see a fight they need help with before joining. If they can make a big red ping for you, teammate who has recently respawned, you can know to join them there and be that help.

Try to use that setup time before a match to talk about this kind of thing. Even when I’m teamed with people who don’t speak my language, they know what that red flashing circle means.

What's the justification for Gear Shield?

in PvP

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

I posted about this recently in the “things that should be in the balance patch” thread.

Same with the duration of gear shield. Blocks given to other professions also block for 3 seconds, or block a set number of attacks (often 3). Shield stance, Illusionary Riposte (2.5 seconds but also creates an illusion), Illusionary Counter (2 seconds, but also creates an illusion), Shelter (2 seconds plus heal). There are many skills that block 1-3 attacks and then cause damage at the end as well. Gear shield is very similar in utility to other blocks in the game because of the lower cooldown. The untraited cooldown is 20 seconds, and given that it does nothing but block, I think this is fair. The cooldown can be reduced to 16 seconds through traits. Other professions can trait to extend their blocks or lessen the cooldown of their blocks through traits as well.

I’ve thought about doing this in matches where people are being particularly gross. But not everything that’s said in mapchat is hurtful. Things that should be in the balance patch

in PvP

Engineer

  • Basically untouched in the current patch preview while even high tier teams are stacking them.

The changes to might and sigil of battle are huge for engineers. Especially considering that the current engineer meta doesn’t contain a single fire field. All their might is coming from sigils, so you may want to wait for the new patch to take effect before you make this assessment.

As for your Overcharged Shot and Gear Shield points, please look at similar skills in other professions. The cast time and duration of these things is well in line with similar skills. Overcharged Shot launches a single foe 450 units, and launches the engineer back 300 units. The other knockback skills you see in PvP with 1/2 second cast times (point blank shot, illusionary wave, staggering blow) either knock back a greater distance or affect up to 5 targets, with no repercussion to the player using that skill. Overcharged Shot could be given a 1/2 second cast time, sure, if the knockback to the engineer was eliminated and the knockback range to the enemy player was slightly increased. That would be fair and balanced, imo. Or give it a 1/4 second cast time like Gust, have it affect 5 targets and still knock back the engineer. Hm. I still think it’s better/more balanced as it is now.

  • Magnet- animation must be visible even if the engi is in stealth.

I have no problem with this, provided the enemy (and thus part of the tell of Magnet) is outside the stealthed area. Elixir S’s stealth is on a long cooldown and makes a very small area of stealth. Most engineers don’t have a smoke field on them in PvP, so they’re relying on Elixir S entirely. If an engineer uses Magnet at close range to interrupt, and the entire tell of Magnet is within the stealthed field (which is small!) I think it should still be invisible. No idea how hard it would be to program that though.

I have no problem with turrets as they are now, but I don’t personally use them. They limit the engineer to a very small area (yeah, usually a point, usually mid), but away from that area the engineer is useless. They’re usually bunkers, and I don’t expect to take any bunker down alone. If I can draw the engineer away from the turrets (which happens more than I expect it to) dealing with them is easy. Otherwise, it’s a team effort to deal with the engineer/turrets. And then they’re dead, and my team makes an effort to prevent them setting up on another point. They end up dropping their turrets in the street where they’re useless because they get jumped, and just never make it back to a point. Turret engineer is such a limiting playstyle, imo. I think what they need most are people devising a valid strategy to counter them, not a nerf. If they’re easily countered, people will stop playing them. But as it is now, so many people just run headlong into the turrets (alone) and die. Stop doing that!

They may be on an alt (like my level 2 Norn I made just to have one, that never goes out of PvP) or have left their better gear on another toon. The PvP community is rather small, so I tend to recognize people I’ve played with/against before. I have respect for anyone that plays their class well, as well as anyone making a sincere effort to improve. I don’t play ranked very often though, so perhaps I have different expectations than other players for that reason.

condi engi on the other hand only countered by another condi engi and longbow ranger, and counter every one else.

Condi engi is countered heavily by necromancer. Consume conditions, corrupt boon, heavy cc. Yeah. A condi engineer isn’t winning that fight, unless by accident.

Longbow ranger though, lol. Not at all. If they’re running a pure DPS setup (which they usually are) they’re easy to kill for an engi. Block rapid fire, magnet pull, add lots of condi, and ranger is dead. If they’re a bunker (rare these days, but still pop up sometimes) I go for the pet. Their pets pull conditions to them, so once the pet is dead, the ranger goes down easy.

Playing condi engi and fighting a condi engi is hilarious. I wouldn’t call them a strong counter exactly. A lot of these fights (for me) end with both of us downed at the same time.

Necro is the only strong counter to condi engi, meaning that condi engi will lose that fight almost every time, no matter what. Unless I know for sure that a necro is particularly bad (or on a new class, not saying the player is all around bad) I run from these fights. I won’t win a 1v1, that’s serious. With celestial rifle, that’s a different situation. I may be able to get them down using power skills and trying to limit the amount of conditions I apply. But that’s crippling, since all my best skills also apply lots of conditions. I usually avoid fights like this for the same reason I avoid fights with condi or shoutbow warrior; see below. It’s a time management decision.

That’s not to say necro is the only class that can deal with condi engi. Shatter mesmer can be difficult for engi with all the confusion, if the mesmer plays well. Thief can also take engi down if it baits out their stunbreak, uses stun, and inflicts lots of conditions. And then stealths before the engineer can do the same back to them. Ditto with condi or celestial warrior, though the fight may go on for some time and isn’t usually worth fighting for that reason.

It’s not an uncounterable class/trait setup. Far from it. It just differs from other meta builds so much that people may not think the first few moves of the fight through until it’s too late.

eta: All that I’m talking about is using rabid amulet, not celestial. It just occurred to me that you may be referring to celestial, since all the might stacking can still provide decent condition damage. If that’s the issue, might’s being nerfed a bit, as well as a popular sigil almost all engineers (and elementalists, and warriors) use. This may give you the balance you’re looking for.

You want to have 50 total stacks of Power/accuracy

or
you wanna get 2 stacks per kill?

Stacking sigils and things that proc on kill don’t work at all in instances. It’s being suggested that things work as they normally do in PvE is all. Killing one monster = one stack of bloodlust or perception, and that traits that trigger on kill actually work.

This is my only complaint about legendaries in general. I’d love to be able to choose when I want the footprints / sounds / projectile effects visible. I play a lot of PvP and WvW, and I usually use a different rifle outside of hotjoin. The loud noises both from the rifle skills themselves and from grenade barrage make me feel easier to dodge. Sometimes the noise from grenade barrage happens early in the animation and sometimes late (not sure if this is clientside lag or not). When it happens early and someone I haven’t netted that isn’t at all focused on me dodges out of the way, I can’t help but wonder if they wouldn’t have, save for the LOUD NOISES. Don’t get me wrong, I love loud noises, just not so much in PvP! Popgun in PvP, or Annelid rifle because Annelid is so ridiculous! I spent 9 months making the Predator though, I’d love to silently use it in PvP and not have to change.

Stop Unisexing Charr and Asura

This is my main, an Asura engi named Hip Hop Hamster. Quite obviously a female, right? This is male model for this coat, but I hate the female version tbh. I’ve tried it on my female human ranger, and I’m so glad my Asura engi has the male option.

Asura and Charr are the only real options atm for people that want to look awesome despite their gender.

This. I don’t always like gender to be a huge part of my gameplay. I look at my character all the time, and it feels weird to be doing such active things in such skimpy armor on humans. It’s probably silly for this to bother me, but it has since launch, and it has in most games. The armor options for human females who want to look more modest or functional are few and far between. I have so few/rarely play my human characters for this reason (can’t bring myself to play a male, don’t know why). I also find Asura animations to be hilarious, I can’t resist.

I’m aware all this says more about me as a person than as a player, but I’m sure I’m not the only one. Sex sells in GW2 as well as anywhere else, and deep down I want no part in that. I think it’s set up well as it is now. You can look distinctly female as an Asura or Charr without having culturally human hallmarks of femininity (certain clothing profiles, breasts, etc.) OR you can be a sexy human or norn female. Whatever floats your boat.

Stop Unisexing Charr and Asura

Elegy.2159

But it would be biologically accurate. Asura are “humanoids”, so they most likely have the same necessary makeup as most living “humanoid” things. Charr are feline, and most have 6 nipples.

I get your point, but biological accuracy isn’t important to me. If you want to nitpick about biological accuracy, the humans in GW2 are grossly out of proportion. The artistic license that’s been taken with them looks good though! I like the fantasy aspect of Asura and Charr – that they’re from a place different than Earth and not bound to the same rules. Whether or not they’re technically mammals, I’d rather not look at more boobs in this game, lol. If I wanted to look at boobs, I’d play my human females more often. Asura also have a comical (bordering on childlike) quality about them, and I think giving them breasts would be so out of place with their animations.

In terms of their culture, it doesn’t seem like femininity for the sake of fashion is important. Which is why I understand Anet’s decision to give them male armor models most of the time – it’s just more “functional” than some of the female counterparts. Like I said, if people want to put their Asura (or Charr) in skirts, more power to them. I hope something they’d enjoy is added eventually. I just think it would be terrible to make sweeping changes to what’s already available, character models included.

In terms of human culture, I agree with you. Asura and Charr are so far removed from human culture though, I don’t see how this applies to them.

I really really like that Asura armor is usually unisex. I’m not opposed to some girly armor being added for people that play female Asura and want to look girly. But I don’t. If I logged in and my poor female Asura engie was suddenly wearing a dress (or even worse, had breasts), I would cry.

[SPOILERS] Season 2 Finale [merged]

in Living World

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

If a loved one is going to torture someone in front of you and you very obviously disagree with the torture, you don’t murder the person to spare them the torture. You defend them. Caithe is a Thief and had fantastic stealth skills in the episode we got to play her in. Why didn’t she just stealth her out of there? If that wasn’t viable, why didn’t she just knock her girlfriend out? If that wasn’t an option, why didn’t she just defend Wynne? There is no logic or even passionate reason for murdering someone who you are trying to protect from torture when you are perfectly capable of defending the person you murdering.

This is actually what I’m most impressed by in the LS. The player is forced to witness difficult decisions, even participating in the slaughter of innocents (the centaurs) in the previous episode. Questions like yours, “why didn’t this character do this instead of that” are what give the story such depth, in my opinion. Anet’s willingness to tackle questionable moral territory is admirable – not just in the LS, but in little snippets throughout the world if you pay close attention.

I also think the stage set for the next episode is great. Putting the Sylvari, a playable race, in the situation they’re in is ballsy. It makes way for a good deal of (in character) racism – if they’re dragon minions, are they inherently evil, bound to turn to “the dark side” so to speak? Is it right to make that assumption of any intelligent creature, that in the end they lack free will? Is their tie to Mordremoth more akin to slavery than a biological or cultural bond?

Even though this is just a game and a fictional story, these questions are socially relevant. All in all, the lore in GW2 has had a lot more depth than I expect from an MMO. Even if I’m not emotionally invested in a particular story arc, I find something interesting to think about.

Returning - Just a few questions

- There are a couple new hearts in Caledon Forest and Plains of Ashford, near the entrance to those zones.
- PvP is undergoing some changes. Solo Q is gone and the matchmaking system is in a test season (and I think it’s going to be reworked, personally). WvW seems the same to me, but I’m no authority on that.
- It’s aesthetic.
- Sorta. Karma got nerfed, but it’s still an active zone for loot farming.
- They’re new! Daily rewards got put towards login rewards, pretty much. You can do any three dailies for 10AP and some daily specific loot.
- When was lifesteal necro a joke? I don’t play necro, but I get owned by them in PvP a lot, so I’ll go with no to this question.
- Rumors.

Welcome back!

I think everyone knows engis are OP right now. cele rifle engi and turret engi both need big nerfs.

That said, I personally don’t have a problem with the supply crate.

I don’t think engi is OP though. Not even celestial engi. The problem is (or looks to me to be) that people don’t want to take the time to learn how to counter them. If you’ve ever played an engineer it shouldn’t be that hard to not die to one. They have so many weaknesses and counters that it makes me laugh every time I read they’re so OP. As someone who plays a lot of engineer, I’d call necromancers OP if anything. Can’t say for sure whether they are or not, since they’re my hardest counter and I’m biased in that regard.

Grenade auto attack

Grenades hit very hard, even with the autoattack. Especially if you’re using the grenadier trait. They’d be terribly overpowered if some skill in placing the ground targets wasn’t involved. I agree that engineer can be murder on your hands if you play it for long periods of time. Are you using the ground target setting “fast with range indicator?” If you aren’t, try that, it can make a world of difference.

this is getting frustrating

Please hang in there, Shins. PvP is really broken right now, and a lot of the problem (from my perspective anyway) is the low player population. It’s hard for matchmaking to be balanced when there are so few people in the queue. Your complaints are valid, and I’ve had some similar experiences since the last patch. I do get long runs of good games, but then long runs of really bad ones as well (usually in off hours, but that’s when I like to play!). People get frustrated and say things that aren’t applicable (like l2p when you’re losing a 4v5 against a premade, lol), so try not to take it to heart. I don’t see any way Anet isn’t working on this, as it’s so broken and the players have been so vocal about it. Just hang in there. It’s bound to get better from here.

Well last time i checked underwater combat was rather unbalanced. So unless this has changed (which it hasent) it may be for the better to not have an underwater map.

It is unbalanced. Terribly unbalanced. I wish it would be fixed and balanced though, because underwater combat is so cool in this game.

Arah Sellers

Exploiting is illegal.

QFT. Not sure about skipping in general being an exploit. I think it depends on how the mob is skipped. For instance, breaking out of the map to swim beneath lupi would be an exploit as far I’m concerned.

I’m willing to believe most Arah sellers are doing legit runs though. I know people who solo/duo Arah without intending to sell it, so I assume most path sellers are using similar strategies.

Same way a mesmer would announce time warp/molymorph moa is up? Or a ranger’s entangle? I don’t see how this is an indication that engineers are overpowered. All elites are a bit “op,” and their long cooldowns reflect that.

Accessories for some of these stat combinations are available from the dungeon collector achievements. For instance, here’s the assassin’s/offensive one, http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Zhaitan%27s_Claw.

Or an engineer; they have no cooldown on weapon swap.

Mesmer ruins gw2?

in PvP

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

Mesmers are pretty easy to kill once you figure out which one is the real one. :p

Spectacting some mesmers can help if you’ve never played one. Tab targeting through them looking for boons can help, as well as looking at the attacks. Clones only autoattack and they don’t dodge. They also take a lot more damage than the player does, and don’t move backwards or side to side. They have a trait called deceptive evasion, and create a clone at their position when they dodge. A good mesmer will try to fool you with that.

When you find the real one, call target on it. At that point they’ll probably stealth if you’ve gotten their health low enough. They can’t recover HP very quickly though, so when they pop out of stealth their health will still be lower than any active illusions (most likely) so look for that, and call target again.

Mesmers are usually glass and go down quickly if you’re hitting the right thing. So I wouldn’t call them OP at all.

OP, have you tried playing with your keybinds? I have neuropathy too, and spacing certain skills further apart on the keyboard helps me a lot. Of course, everyone is different, so I don’t know if it’ll be any benefit to you, but figured I’d mention it in case you hadn’t thought of it. I hope to see a wider variety of dailies as well, but maybe some crazy keybinds could help in the meantime?
