The meta does shift. The builds that people call meta and use most often are in that position because they’re the best counters to other common builds. I really like GS warrior too. I love it, in fact. It gets rekt hard in PvP. It does well in WvW (roaming) though! If you want to improve your rank, I doubt GS warrior will help you with that right now, but nothing is stopping you from taking it into unranked or hotjoin. As long as you have fun, right? Or try to love the PvP cheesemeta and keep playing GS warrior/medi guard non-competitively or in WvW. A time may come when that setup is optimal. To quote Professor Zinga, “The future is mutable! Go with the flow!”
And if you don’t know what skills a Warrior has when he swaps to hammer, I really question any sort of pretense at PvP expertise you have.
Warrior is obvious. I’ve been surprised by rangers using shortbow (since it’s uncommon these days) because it looked like longbow from a distance. Some shortbow skins are the same size as their longbow counterpart. And thief trouble, since they often pop in and out of stealth and there’s just a split second to see what they’re carrying anyway.
I’m opposed to telegraphing engineer kits in a more obvious way (like the icon elementalists have) because it would be dumbing down the profession only to benefit the opposition. I can’t be sure what pet a ranger is going to switch to before they switch it, why should someone be able to highlight me from a distance and watch me flip kits for swiftness? They’d know exactly what was coming before I even got there. All elementalists have four attunements, but you won’t necessarily know what weaponset they have from a distance unless they’re the hugest of huge norn and you’ve got the hugest of huge monitors. Most professions have two weapon sets plus utilities. Engineers can potentially have four weapon sets. I get that’s a lot to think ahead about, but signets aside, you have no idea what utilities other professions are using until they use them.
At least you get some visual cues from engineers before you may have to fight them. Elixir gun has a very distinct backpack, as does flamethrower. As I previously mentioned, grenade kit has dangling grenades. Bomb kit has a big ol’ bomb at the top of it. Tool kit and bomb kit backpacks are identical (yeah, :c) so look for the wrench.
Are you having the biggest problems with asura? If so, using standard enemy models may help. Everyone will wear uniform, profession specific armor, and will use the human character model.
Except toolkit and bomb kit are identical.
They are not. Bomb kit has a big bomb strapped to the top of the pack, and the grenade kit has grenades dangling from it. And yeah, all that “gl seeing it before you get hit with it” stuff. I don’t think it’s a problem though, especially with all the different skins available for weapons. I don’t expect to be able to distinguish every weapon before a skill is used on a first encounter with a player, but I’m definitely going to remember what it was the second time around.
Condi Engi’s always win the waiting game, and that is what the HamBow is weak to.
There have been several engineer players that responded to you, actually. Condi engi doesn’t always win this game, trust me. As for hambow though, I think hammer offers less in terms of fighting an engineer than sword/warhorn does, especially if you trait for warhorn. Sword gives you access to more conditions and warhorn allows you to remove more conditions. Since engineers are weak to conditions and apply lots of conditions, I think that’s the way to go. You’ll still have access to cc through your longbow and utilities.
Condi engineer is more difficult to beat than other professions as a warrior, but it’s far from impossible. When I’m able to get the upper hand as a warrior, I absolutely feel it’s because I understand engineers and what they’re likely to do next. It’s already been said though, if your primary goal is just to beat condi engineers, roll a necro. Watch out for the warriors on that necro though, lol.
There’s a time and a place for healing ele builds. I know some disagree, but there are difficult events where people do benefit from the passive healing you provide. Tequatl, understaffed Jormag, some events in Orr, events in the SW and WvW come to mind. I wouldn’t set myself on using such a build all the time, but it’s good to know that it’s available and how to use it. Ele achieves impressive damage, but it’s still primarily a supportive class (in my opinion.) So no, I don’t think you have to abandon the idea entirely or re-roll a guard. You can heal without building for it too, but the amount you heal for will be drastically reduced. I’m doing world completion on ele now, and it’s fun to come across people in lower level zones having trouble with a specific mob. Like the spider queen in Kessex. Switch to water and people start being vertical more than horizonal, it’s great.
Keep in mind you can be more of a hybrid class than you might think, since you don’t have to spec only for healing power or only for damage. Celestial gear come to mind, since the ele is one of the few professions that can make use of every single stat on celestial gear. I’m using three pieces each of berserker’s and assassin’s armor with celestial trinkets for world completion. It feels pretty versatile.
As far as what to do with your build around level 20, I’m going to leave that to more knowledgeable people. I made my ele prior to the new trait system, so I never had the particular experience you’re having. I can tell you with confidence though that it’ll get better when you hit 80/unlock all your traits.
Learning to play engineer is like learning to play guitar. Before you even know anything you have an idea of what it can do, but you can’t get your fingers to do it right. So you can attempt to play that barre chord or Ebdim7, and you’ve read how to do it and heard it done right, but you still sound awful. And you can complain about it (in fact, all guitar students complain about barre chords in the beginning, trust me) but that won’t help. Only practice will help. So you practice basic things until they’re easy, and keep moving up to more difficult things. And eventually you can play Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce like it’s nothing. And at that point you’ll be in the position where you’re the one listening to someone say “but F chords are so hard!” and kinda laughing to yourself about it.
All I’m getting at is that I’ve been there. If you really love playing engineer, keep at it and it’ll get better. My main is engineer, but I play a fair bit of warrior and elementalist too. Elementalist is similar in a lot of ways, but warrior isn’t. If I haven’t touched my warrior in weeks and finally play it again, it feels so weird. It’s easy to the point that I overcomplicate it and play warrior worse than I play engineer.
EG is f**** amazing.
QFT. Speedy kits is amazing too, and it’s in the first tier of traits you’re able to unlock. Get that first, imo.
Forceful Explosives (in the explosives traitline) is another first tier awesome trait that makes bomb kit even better. Precise Sights or Fireforged Trigger in firearms and Invigorating Speed in alchemy are also strong traits you’ll be able to access early on while leveling.
Yep, spam it, or it won’t activate until the next tick. Just practice, you’ll get it. When there’s a lot of lag it still gets messed up, but it’ll be second nature eventually.
I’m not bored, but I’d love some SAB. I’d love some permanent SAB too.
Engineer class will destroy any class that doesn’t run a cheese condition spec.
Meh, that’s only somewhat true. Engineers are very susceptible to conditions, but you can kill them with direct damage too if you’re smart. Try to bait dodges out of them until they run out. They’re probably running something like invigorating speed, or elixir R, or sigil of energy, so pay attention to how many dodges they actually have. Being immobilized also really sucks as an engineer. I usually have one utility that will break immob, but if that’s already been baited out I’m in a bad place vs. a warrior. Mobility is the biggest asset an engineer has, unless they’re running a turret build or something. Try to bait out their heavy condi skills before you use berserker’s stance and either dodge them or clear them while you’re immune. Watch out for elixir gun’s autoattack too, as it inflicts weakness. Try to time your burst with your stance so you don’t lose half your damage.
They’re pretty weak at range as well. You can use your low cooldown weapon swap to bait out dodges at range, swap to melee, bait out their best condi skills, dodge out of the way and swap to range, etc. It’s a lot of timing and what will work will vary from player to player.
If making an engineer is an option for you, that will help you more than anything. You don’t have to love it or level it to 80, but go to HotM and hotjoin and learn what all their skills actually do, and how long those cooldowns feel in fights. Or spectate and watch the engineers. There are a lot of different ways people play the profession, and if you figure out what utilities they’re using early on you’re at a huge advantage.
VeeWee’s right that inventions is awful in sPvP, but engineers making full use of inventions fill an undervalued niche role in WvW when they take the healing bombs trait. The healing from that trait scales with healing power, and can keep your group standing when it wouldn’t otherwise. The relatively short duration of fights in sPvP compared to WvW makes that role kinda useless if you’re defending small points, but fights in WvW can be massive. I wouldn’t recommend taking any of the turret related traits in that line if you go that route though, because they’ll get demolished instantly regardless. Supply crate makes a very nice AoE stun, but that’s as much use as you’re going to get from turrets in WvW.
There are lots of ways to play engineer, especially in WvW. Celestial rifle is probably the closest thing to a meta in WvW, but there are many ways to be just as effective, imo.
In theory, matchmaking matches you based on who you’ve previously won against or lost to, independent of rank. Rank is just an indication of how long you’ve played, not your actual skill level.
Of course, there are other factors that might pit you against people of much greater skill than you. If the number of people in queue is small, it might not be possible to match you appropriately, so the algorithm does the best it can. Whether or not the other team is a premade competition team is also a factor in how difficult the match will be.
I also think the matchmaking system is “unfair” and needs quite a bit of work. Hopefully, Anet’s on that.
AFKers sitting idle with heal on autocast is an entirely different issue. I think that’s what you’re talking about when you say to report them for botting.
I’ve seen a lot of this – people leaving matches or going afk in ranked arena. The system seems really broken right now. I wouldn’t bother reporting them at this point. I’m not one to ragequit, but getting matched against premades over and over, or being insulted in mapchat (like being told you’re trash) can have that effect on people. I don’t blame them.
I know it’s bad form to leave/AFK, but try to see the bigger picture. This isn’t so much an issue with the community as it is with the matchmaking system. If matches weren’t so terribly and repeatedly uneven, there wouldn’t be so many AFKers or leavers.
People QQing like pros over those ridiculous low 500 correct presses, which are in essence just only 5 completed songs and its mostly done in like participating 2-3 rounds or just a few more, based on how often you get kicked out cause of being just a bad player.
Unfortunately, some activities in gw2 aren’t so much about “L2P” as you say, but ping. I’ve been struggling with bell choir since day one. I actually think it looks fun and I’d like to enjoy it. I press the buttons at the correct times, but having the server receive that message 2-3 seconds late means I just get kicked repeatedly. I play guitar and have for over a decade, so it’s not a lack of understanding. I understand time signatures and the premise of the game, but the lag makes it impossible. Please try to be kinder to people who express difficulty with parts of the game. You don’t know why they’re having a problem.
Regarding Bell Choir: don’t make something so affected by latency a required part of completing the event achievements please.
^ Yes, this. Please, Anet, in the future, consider the people who have terrible internet. I know it’s not your fault, and I definitely think things like bell choir should be available. Having even one more option available that doesn’t rely so heavily on a good connection would make it possible for lots of people to complete the meta. I really enjoy seasonal events and I enjoy receiving titles as a reminder of them, but I doubt that’s going to happen for me this time around. :c
Mini Mouth of Zhaitan, please. That thing is epic.
In WvW I prefer rifle. With the ground you often have to cover there, I find it more useful. I do always run tool kit in WvW for the block at the very least though.
In PvP I much prefer pistol/shield. The extra blocks are nice of course, but you also have to consider its offensive capabilities vs. rifle. It has a fairly low cooldown blind/confuse, supplemental poison (assuming you have poison from either grenades or elixir gun or sigils as well) and a blast finisher/knockback on shield.
I have tried both rifle and pistol/shield with a celestial amulet in PvP, but the celestial stat combo always feels somewhat flat to me. I prefer rabid, but if I were running celestial my choice of weapon would be the same. I think it mostly boils down to how you prioritize condition damage vs. direct damage. Both are effective, even with a celestial amulet, but rifle is going to offer more in the way of direct damage and pistol offers more condition. Just play with both and see which you prefer; I don’t think there’s a “right answer.”
i found aed to be amazing w the healskill reset trait, invention line i think?
on a glass sd build
It’s just amazing with healing turret though, and on a shorter general cooldown with more healing and more frequent condi removal. :c
I mean leg pieces in general. They end where boots supposed to be covering them. With no logical end, fold back or something.
I’ve really used many of the skins that have that particular effect. Once I get some time I would like to go through the wardrobe to see.
Do you have any picture to give me a place to start (or a gender/race/armor weight to start with).
Ascended medium armor has this awkward cut off on female asura (without the shoes) if you want to preview to see.
The hemless pants don’t really bother me. And I’m very familiar with which boots make my asura feet look human shaped and which don’t. That said, it would be pretty cool to be barefoot sometimes. I look at asura feet and think “why do they need shoes anyway?”
I’ve always wondered why they can’t turn on clipping for hair, like how tressfx hair in Tomb Raider 2012 realistically falls over her shoulder and clothes depending on movement, gravity, …
It’s because hair like that is rigged to a complex “skeleton.” Rendering that on one person is no biggie, but 100+ people (or even 10+ people most likely) with such a complex character model would be lag soup.
This game would be better with defined roles that had equal value in the game.
I guess it’s not as apparent as it is in other games, but there are defined roles (i.e. professions that do “x” or “y” better than anyone else) and they do have equal value.
I absolutely think there are portions of the game that are strictly stack-and-smack, but there are portions that aren’t. Higher level fractals are very difficult to survive, even with appropriate AR. Hammer guardians (traited for symbol of protection) make everyone’s run easier, as do elementalists geared or traited for healing. It’s already been mentioned that PvP and WvW can be entirely different as well.
There is a need for more build diversity, and I think that’s slowly being addressed. The fight mechanics in the Silverwastes finally made condition builds formidable. The progressive scaling of mobs in FotM opened up a wide range of newly useful builds when it was introduced as well. So, sure, there’s still work to be done. But we aren’t all locked into one cookie cutter build all the time.
I main engineer, and there are several very different builds I use in different situations. Excluding PvP and WvW, I do use a straightforward max damage build for most dungeons. For some, I choose to carry more crowd control abilities for quickly doing away with defiance so interrupts are possible. My FotM build sacrifices some dps for more reflection uptime. In the Silverwastes I gear for more condition damage to better focus down husks. For Tequatl if I’m in the zerg, I gear and trait much more defensively, and take the trait that adds healing to my bombs. These are the most effective builds I’ve found for given situations, so I’m not at all locked into a dps role. The parts of PvE that require this build diversity are fairly new additions to the game compared to say, AC or CoF. Things are getting better.
Utilities don’t change the way you play.
Yes, they do. Take two identically geared and traited guardians. One is using consecrations, the other is using spirit weapons. Those are two completely different playstyles. Same with signet ranger vs. trap ranger, a mesmer carrying meditations vs. glamour skills. I constantly switch utilities between encounters, and on engineer my utilities often are my weaponset, so I just couldn’t disagree with you more.
I’m content with or without an expansion. In the past year, we’ve gotten two new zones and a ton of story. And the story is leading up to resolving some longstanding questions about the lore, which is very cool.
I wish more of you would keep in mind that GW2 is only two years old. Games like this require a lot of work and design. I’m baffled by how much they can put out in such a short period of time.
What we have now works well for the most part. If they rush to push out an expansion in response to threats of players leaving, it will likely be full of bugs. And the people at Anet who really care about the game (i.e. the content designers) will be worked sore for a product the players will endlessly complain about.
I’d much rather them go silent about a big project and put out new content that parallels the quality of what we already have. I’d love some fresh content too, but I’m willing to be patient. I’d honestly prefer there not be a box expansion, but more of the slow release of new content/story that we’ve seen.

Luck, if you have it. The highest quality consumable is masterwork quality, unfortunately.
It was mentioned in another thread that ascended materials also count. Like refining bloodstone bricks or making a deldrimor steel ingot.
I suppose you could also make a weapon or piece of armor and sell it, if you wanted to.
It also gives me a chance to say something in chat if I see a lot of people struggling so that maybe they won’t make as many mistakes the next time.
Thanks for this. I suck terribad at choir bells, but the helpful tidbits I get from chat have helped a bit.
The game is for musically inclined individuals and those who do not know how to play just press all the keys making an obnoxious sound.
Funny thing is though, Hitman, you can be musically inclined and…suck at choir bells. There’s lag to deal with at times, and it’s not that intuitive when the notes need to be played to be “correct.” I’m sorry I make obnoxious sounds. :c I’ve been playing guitar for 16 years though, I promise I sound better irl!
The item rarity colors come out very, very similar in most types of color blindness. In particular, the rare and exotic rarities are almost indistinguishable. In some other types, masterwork is also similar to rare and exotic.
Yep! No amount of messing with my monitor makes them easy to distinguish for me. I’ve worked around this quite well by keeping a rare fractal equipment box as the last bag in my inventory. If it’s there at the bottom, it’s rare. If it asks me if I’m sure I want to salvage it and it’s above, it’s exotic.
If anyone with only lower level characters really wants to finish this, I’d be happy to run with you to Orr; just send me a mail in game. You’ll absolutely die along the way, but I’ll revive you and armor repairs are free! I bet you’ll get a whole lot of experience and new places to come back to as well. Same goes for the jumping puzzles in lower level zones if you’re having a problem completing them.
Thanks for this!
Been playing this game for some time, running dungeons daily. Number of meta rangers joined my party: 3.
1k hours, and only 3 rangers I came across knew how to play their class.
Figure it out yourself!
I love playing with rangers. Especially in dungeons – for their “spotter” trait, frost spirit, and range of party wide buffs provided by pets. The pug rangers I’ve played with over the past year have been largely competent with both range and melee for their class. Ranger’s sword skills (especially coupled with quickening zephyr) do amazing damage! They stack a lot of vuln too!
These “bad” rangers that join your party, maybe they’re just new? Give them a few pointers, at least that’s what I would do if I ran into one.
Yes, I would love to see you complete Tequatl with everyone just stacking next to a foot and spamming all skills.
This has been done, and has worked. It only works if the entire map is participating and dealing decent damage though. You just whack on Tequatl, whack on the bone wall when it comes up, and make it to the first battery phase. Then you chain the second burn into second battery, and so on.
This won’t work if 15 people are afk, and they inevitably are on a map that isn’t occupied exclusively by one enormous guild. So it’s risky, and generally a better tactic to rely on the fight mechanics (i.e. turrets with defense).
I’d love it too if another boss or dragon was ramped up to Teq’s level. Like the Shatterer, maybe? That fight is so easy that people joke about giving him a pedicure the whole time.
This is how it works for ascended weapons though :p (armour I’m not sure about)
It works this way for ascended armor as well as weapons, where the skin’s name is displayed while the stat set/upgrade are not.
Especially on higher end weapons, I don’t see why we can’t give our weapons unique names. Obviously, it would have a filter similar to ranger pets, where you can’t name it something terrible and offensive.
Personally, I have 8 rifles. All with different sigil combinations for different purposes. I realize most people aren’t going to go that far, but being able to name them would make recognizing those with the same skins that much faster. Plus, I just think it would be amazing for a “Pop Gun” ascended rifle to have a ridiculously macho name. Like “Zombie Splicer.” -pop-
Seriously though, bunny ears are worse enough. This game isn’t kawaii-wars diddle simulator 2014.
But…but, it kinda is.
Nice!
I haven’t even tried to solo this one, but I’ve noticed a disconnect between the telegraph and taking damage too.
OP, which “dead dungeon” are you trying to run? I’m not experienced with every path of every dungeon, but I’m more than happy to run it with you. If it’s one I know less about, we’ll figure it out.
This is an MMO so joining a guild that shares your interests will only be a good thing for you.
I must admit that I felt the community was much better before the megaserver system was introduced. I cared for my neighbors, so to speak, but now I don’t. One of those old wounds that will not heal.
Megaservers just expose you to a greater number of people, so your probability of encountering someone who isn’t helpful is greater as a result. There are still lots of people who want to help others in gw2! Even in the LFG tool, I’ve met some awesome people there! I’ve had people disappoint me as well, and it is easy to give up on caring when that appears to be (but isn’t necessarily) the norm.
A guild can be an incredible asset if you find one that you clique with. Give a guild a shot. And like I said, if you message me in game I’ll be more than happy to do any dungeon with you!
“Across all characters, you have played for 1932 hours 23 minutes over the past 819 days.”
No precursor drop, but so far I’ve gotten 5 ascended drops outside of fractals (four weapon boxes and one ring). I’m absolutely fine with this. When I finally do get a precursor drop it’s going to feel epic. If it were more common, I can’t imagine that the sense of luck/accomplishment would be the same.
I’ve tried my hand at the forge too, and haven’t had any luck there either. So I spent months saving gold and bought a pre. I thought having to outright buy one as a last resort wouldn’t feel epic, but it did. It was so much work and self restraint to save up that much gold, and aside from looking cool and making loud pewpew sounds, the predator is a monument to countless hours spent working towards one long term goal.
We need an environment where people are respectful of each other.
These environments do exist in game; if that’s not your experience, I’m sorry.
Right after the Halloween events ended, I went to the Queensdale swamp shack to maize balm some ambients. Someone was already there, and said they were cool with sharing. We worked together to balm/aoe them, and ended up with way more bags than we would have solo.
I’m not opposed to your suggestion at all, though there may be more important issues to address. What you may want to try if you end up in a map with sour people – rep. a different guild (or none) and exit to character select. When you log back in, hopefully you’re in a different instance with nicer people.
This thread is ridiculous.
QFT.
Ele’s mobility and ranged damage balance its insufferable squishiness. It’s a low vitality class. Just like guardian, whose low vitality is balanced by easy access to defensive boons like aegis, protection and retaliation.
If you get frustrated trying to catch an Ele, I’d be more than happy to let you practice on me. It isn’t (and shouldn’t be) easy to do, since once you do the Ele is as good as dead.
Next one is this one. Where am i
?
The secret garden jumping puzzle, in mount maelstrom?
“Will someone go to the store and buy me some more beer?” – actually posted by my friend, and I saw while looking for a taxi to the Mad King’s Lab. lol’ed hard, and yes he seemed pretty drunk.
“SMACK A PUG DAY” lfg by my party member to replace a dc in CoE. Got no volunteers, so had to change the message, go fig.
I dub this the Lost Effect.
I love the LS. But I also loved Lost, so I don’t mind this comparison at all.
man, blasting 4 (or even 5 or 6 – you can blast 2 ft2) blasts at fire field would take u so long… it is cool when you have long fire field and your party helps you to blast – by 1 or 2 blasts from a man, but it is awfully annoing to do it yourself.
it is surely not the best way to play engi, why may even you need so much might uptime?
Sounds like a lot to execute, I know. After a while playing engineer though, it becomes second nature. That’s why I use the fire field from flamethrower rather than the field from bomb kit, as the napalm lasts a long 10 seconds. There are ways to stack even more might with it. It just depends on your preference. I prefer taking another kit rather than a turret for 2 extra blast finishers. It’s nice to be able to change skills out of combat so easily; you can you always switch up on the fly. Why so much might uptime? Well, obviously because it scales with both power and condition damage, which makes the baddies die faster. Extra might duration from runes applies to might you give to others as well, which helps them make the baddies die faster too. Engineer is often responsible for more than half of the might a party has, so the extra duration is well worth it, imo.
In general, yeah, grenades are better than flamethrower. Flamethrower’s autoattack sucks, but having it around for the fire field/blind/blast finisher and easy access to burning from the toolbelt skill is awesome. Especially if you’re relying on condition damage, since burning deals so much damage per tick. FT wasn’t designed to be a heavily damaging weapon, I don’t think. It’s more useful for the utility (and farming, lol).
People will use it to weed other people out in damage specific rolls. It may add a drama that other mmo’s have faced. Likewise, they would use the dps meter to determine who they want over who they need; just because player A is a few points lower in dps than player B, doesn’t necessarily mean that player B is better…
I think a dps meter in a selected area of hotm would be nice. As well as a meter that measured your toughness – vitality – survival rate in a given scenario or attack (a thieves 6k heartseeker for example)
A high dps shouldn’t govern anything, instead used as a comparison tool for that user only; to compare his current build’s damage to his last build’s damage.
100x, this. Having a dedicated area for making builds would be so helpful. It should have the option to eliminate cooldowns on utilities as well, if a player wants to practice a certain skillset over and over. Bringing a DPS meter out of a set area would be bad news though, like Saiyan and so many others have said.
Zerker’s gear is the meta and I support people who want to play that way. They have every right to speed through content if that makes them happy, and I do this too when enough of my friends are online and willing to speedrun. Pugs be pugs though. If I join a casual dungeon group that doesn’t specify speedrun, I make no assumptions about how people are geared/traited. People have really surprised me too, like a cleric’s guardian that plays very well and buffs the whole party and reflects all the things, or a dire necro who holds their own and uses cc appropriately. Runs like those are nowhere near as fast as a dedicated speedrun, for sure, but they’re a lot of fun. I’d hate for people to be discouraged from trying atypical builds just because someone will inevitably look at the DPS meter and tell them they’re “not helping.”
Yeah! I hope sinister works for you. It has engineer written all over it, but I haven’t personally found a way to make it viable in comparison to berserker’s or assassin’s. If you like it, I’ll definitely be giving it another try.
I totally forgot about Giver weapons and runes of aristocracy. Those would be excellent, I imagine. Especially Giver’s with condi duration food, that should push even your bleeds onto extra ticks. When I experimented with sinister, I used a lot of tool kit along with flamethrower and bomb kit. Burning and confusion are your highest damage conditions, so that’s something to keep in mind. Especially against enemies that attack quickly; confusion just melts them.
Let me know how it goes!
I wouldn’t use elixir U. Quickness in PvE is just too situational, and endurance regen is precious. I hate giving that up.
The build and skill rotation set up by DnT is very very good. Someone linked it above, but I added links below to the up to date version (I think). If you pug a lot though, you’re going to benefit from knowing what to change up. I may add more grenades to my rotation to stack the most vuln I can. I may switch out EG for bomb kit so I have access to another fire field and blast finisher for might stacking. This decreases my personal dps, but is a greater benefit to a poorly organized party. It’s only worth doing if nobody else is paying attention to defiance, since Big Ol’ Bomb messes up planned interrupts very easily. Bomb kit can also be a lifesaver in paths where your party is struggling with a trash run, doubly so without a thief in your party (since you can stack stealth). Solo runs are another issue entirely. So, tl;dr: the optimal utilities to take from a pure dps standpoint are grenade kit, elixir gun, and flamethrower. But bomb kit, tool kit (for blocking and pulling), elixir R, utility goggles, elixir C and slick shoes are all things I’ve used in PvE to great effect. They’re just highly situational.
If I’m running solo, or with a party lacking a banner of discipline, I use precision/ferocity food. With group buffs (at least banner of discipline and maybe spotter too) I use power/ferocity food. The new utility buffs, bounteous and furious maintenance oils are GREAT general utility buffs that also extend boon duration. Mob specific ones are better if you’re dungeoning though. If your party needs more vuln stacks, any food that provides condition duration is going to help most with that.
As for weapons, I very rarely use anything but rifle. Pistol/shield is better in difficult solo situations, especially against high toughness bosses like GL, but in a party you’ll generally have someone who can reflect. I prefer just taking the trait “invigorating speed” to gain vigor when I gain swiftness, if I need more survivability, or tool kit. Sigil of energy probably does the same job without the retrait. If you really like pistol/shield, go with it, I just find that rifle suits me better.
This build: http://www.dtguilds.com/forum/m/6563292/viewthread/15457607-dnt-engineer-build-9914/page/2/post/78787174 and this rotation: http://www.dtguilds.com/forum/m/6563292/viewthread/15386797-optimal-dps-rotation are the best you can do from a damage standpoint. Like I said, I modify this when it better suits the party and situation.
I use strength runes and berserker’s gear (with assassin’s rifle), since that offers me the most utility in the greatest number of potential situations. Assassin’s gear/berserker’s trinkets with scholar runes would offer slightly more damage output. Precision food tends to benefit me more than power based food, since I’m not using full assassin’s.
For trash run stealth stacking, my rotation is this: BOB, smoke bomb, healing turret, flame turret, detonate healing turret, vent/detonate flame turret, supply crate (just for the extra blast finisher), rocket boots. This should give you 12s of stealth if nobody else contributes blasts, and 2s more for every blast finisher your party adds. After the trash run I switch my utilities back to kits.
For might stacking, start in flamethrower. Put down BOB, throw down napalm, flame blast/detonate flame blast. Deploy and detonate healing turret. Switch to EG and use acid bomb. Immediately cancel to rifle and use jump shot (a leap, not a blast). You can throw down supply crate too. This gives your party 15 might, as well as giving you a fire shield from jump shot. If you take grenade kit over bomb kit (preferable from a damage/vuln standpoint), that’s cut down to 12 might without BOB. Not much of a loss.
For burst healing: BOB, healing turret/cleansing burst/detonate, BOB should explode while you’re switching to FT for flame blast/detonate flame blast, switch to EG and use acid bomb. I haven’t calculated the numbers on healing, but that rotation is 4 area heals (3 if you’re using grenades instead of bombs). That all has to happen quickly, since the water field doesn’t last very long. If you have a ranger or ele in your party, you have a bit more time to blast, as their fields last longer than yours does.
The only thing I would 100% change other than elixir U is your superior sigil of earth. You don’t need that, especially using pistol.
edit: Sinister, not Carrion, I get it now.

Yeah, turrets suck. The damage they deal is pitiful, and they’re easily destroyed. Even in PvE. Even if you trait to make them stronger. Thumper turret can offer some utility in that it functions as two blast finishers in one utility slot. But I’d only use it for the blasts, not leave it out. Net turret isn’t bad for “defend the perimeter” type PvE events, but I’d rather just carry a rifle for that.
I totally understand wanting to play around with different builds. As an engineer especially, since the profession offers a ton of diversity. It’s easy to lose your way making a build too, if you’re not 100% on the traits that are available and how they synergize with stats/weapons/kits.
Both of your builds make full use of the Firearms trait line, which is excellent for any engineer. I’d start with that. Grenades work great with precision, since you have two chances to crit per attack, and more if traited into Explosives for Grenadier. They’re also a great way to build up conditions. If you’re hellbent on using a turret just for funsies, net (for cc) or flame turret (for burning) wouldn’t be as terrible as the others. Grenades can take some getting used to, since they’re ground targeted. At longer ranges, you’ll be aiming more for where enemies will be than where they are (I primarily use them at mid to melee range). Some immobilization never hurts when you’re learning, but just opening with the chill grenades helps a lot. I anticipate you’ll tire of using a turret about when you get comfortable with nades. Rifle can immobilize too, so you’re better off just using rifle 2 and switching to grenades in my opinion. And flamethrower (the toolbelt skill) offers easier access to burning than flame turret. As well as a fire field, blind, and blast finisher, all with fairly short cooldowns. Flamethrower’s autoattack throws people off because those large numbers are just accumulated damage. It’s actually pretty weak. But great for tagging, and adding some fire! Who doesn’t love fire!
Personally, I’m a sucker for the BIG NUMBERS and trait fully into Explosives as well as Firearms, and run bomb kit always, toss up between grenades and flamethrower depending on the situation. And rocket boots, to escape immobilization, move faster, gain an extra heal if I need it with the blast finisher, and stack might. All in all a pretty common build, with a few tweaks. If you want something totally different, Tools is a very good trait line. And it’s great with tons of precision.
These are just suggestions, since you asked for some. Even if none of this suits your style, hopefully it gives you some ideas! If I were running a crit build (traited fully into Firearms and Tools), I’d run rifle. Rifle crits like an 18 wheeler, and it offers immobilization, gap opener and closer, a leap, and added vuln stacking. I’d take grenades, flamethrower, and toolkit as well. With 6 points in firearms, your condition damage will be -okay- even if you don’t gear for it. The toolkit’s shield skills are great for survivability and pulling mobs, and you can use it to add bleeds and confusion. Like the flamethrower, I’m not so keen on the autoattack it has, but I know people who are.
I’d take Precise Sights, Rifle Mod, and Modified Ammunition in Firearms. Or switch Rifle Mod for Juggernaut if you use flamethrower more than rifle or want the extra might/toughness over the rifle’s damage increase. In Tools – Speedy Kits, Scope (if you attack from range a lot) or Kit Refinement (if you attack at melee range more often) or Leg Mods (if being cc’d annoys you more than anything) and Adrenal Implant.
Even though a build like the above would focus strongly on crit chance, I’d use power as a primary armor stat. With no points in explosives, you’ll really need it. I’d use Berserker’s gear, but Valkyrie would be a viable option with less squishiness. Sinister or Carrion gear might be a fun option too, if you like the condition damage.
Have you ever tried Golemancer runes? They can be fun, and give a lot of precision and ferocity. The golem from the 6 stat bonus does use a knock back skill though, and can keep you in combat unintentionally. I’d run a rune with decent power, for the reason stated above. Like Elementalist, Ogre, Mad King, or even Divinity. If you gear for condition damage, runes of perplexity would be very strong. You can inflict confusion directly with tool kit. And rifle, flamethrower and tool kit all have skills that interrupt quite often.
Sorry for the novel. I didn’t set out to say so much initially. Let me know if any of this was helpful, or if you use some of it and improve on it. Best of luck!

Testing this today, I do gain 200 toughness in WvW, but not in PvE or PvP.
I can’t confirm whether the toughness is not applied at all or just not reflected in the hero panel. Either way, this is something that very much needs to be fixed. Please, Anet, fix.
Sounds like you need to swap servers.
Maybe not swap servers, but follow a different commander. Engineers are extremely useful in zergs. Think of their ability to stack might, area heal and apply cc, among other things.
If you feel useless, play around with your build. Engineer can be played many different ways, and it’s possible you haven’t found your play style yet. And don’t let one person’s opinion determine your efficacy. It’s possible that commander was being sarcastic, or has never played engineer.
