Yeah, lol, this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. If have friends on your rival servers though, you can spar in Obsidian Sanctum. Doing that can be a ton of fun – but no PvP reward track progress, obviously.

Might stacking question

in Engineer

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

What game mode are you playing? There are lots of ways to stack might, but I don’t want to lead you astray with kits/utilities that are fairly useless outside of PvE.

Flamethrower has a long lasting fire field and a blast finisher on a 5 sec. cooldown. It’s not very effective in PvP (I have seen people play it well though, just rarely.)

Have you considered pairing sigil of intelligence and sigil of strength? If you switch kits often, you should get more might stacks from that than you do with sigil of battle. If you switch out protection injection for invigorating speed, you won’t be missing the vigor you gain from sigil of energy.

If you’re in PvE or WvW, there are also foods that give you might.

Bowl of Orrian Truffle and Meat Stew (100% Chance to gain might on dodge , 40% Endurance regeneration)
Plate of Roasted Cactus (100 Ferocity , 33% Chance to cause might on critical)

edit for your edit: WvW, okay. Do you usually roam alone, or in a group? You can blast allied fire fields as well; they don’t have to be your own. If you’re running with an ele especially, you’ll probably have plenty of them to blast!

Advice for Engi Alts?

in Engineer

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

1. Holy cow this profession is confusing. I know the Mesmer like the back of my hand, but I feel like I’m trying to read a new language when I play this guy. Any advice on builds/activities to ease myself in so I can figure out what playstyle I like on the engineer?

Juggling kits and their cooldowns can be difficult at first. Maybe start with one kit and a couple different utilities, and build up to 3 kits. Rocket boots, utility googles, mines, and the elixirs come to mind as useful, but there’s a time and a place for just about everything the engineer has. I’d get to know all of them, because you never know when one of them might be exactly what you need for a particular encounter.

2. What gear would you recommend for a new engi like myself? I bought a full rare set of Berserker and crafted a few exotics, but I’m thinking about making a set of Celestial, since Engi’s seem to benefit from every stat. Thoughts?

I recommend starting with and sticking with Berserker’s if that’s your goal at endgame. Of course you’re going to die a lot on a profession you’re not used to, but each death is a learning experience! Engineer lacks a decent amount of condi cleanse, but does have a lot of other defensive utilities. Get to know them all.

Celestial is awesome in WvW, so having a set of that isn’t a bad idea.

3. Bomb Kit – Everyone raves about this kit, but it seems so darn clunky to me. The long delay between skill use and it’s effect is annoying, and seems like it would make it useless in PvP/WvW (although I guess I could be convinced to use it in PvE).

Bomb kit felt clunky to me at first too, but it’s one of the best kits we have, especially for PvE. It has a high damage autoattack for power builds, a fire and smoke field on low cooldown, a blast finisher, cc, and is useful for condi builds as well. It’s not bad in WvW in the slightest, but I usually favor grenade kit for that. Bomb kit is excellent for kiting, so maybe start with that to get used to it. I think it’s really just practice that makes it feel less clunky to use.

4. Flamethrower – Now this seems like a fun kit. Is a juggernaut/flamethrower build viable in PvE?

Yes. That said, flamethrower is not your best bet for damage – it’s more of a utility kit. It has the longest lasting fire field an engineer has, and a blast finisher on a very low cooldown. The knockback and blind are useful as well. As a level 80, juggernaut flamethrower is fine for open world PvE and farming, but don’t expect it to be that effective at speedrunning dungeons. I don’t take the juggernaut trait very often (mostly just for farming or exploration) but I almost always have this kit on me in PvE. I prefer to take rifle mod (since I use rifle) over juggernaut when I’m going for max damage.

5. For those of you with alts, what do you usually do once they hit 80? Just get them full exotic and then….do whatever you normally do on your main? It feels like a silly question, but I hit 80 on him the other day and thought to myself, “Sweet! Now what?”

I like WvW and PvP, so I tend to do a lot of that. I also like to play through the story, taking an arc I haven’t before if possible. Also world completion. I like the lore and how pretty the open world is, as well as reading dialogue I skipped previously and finding easter eggs. Dungeons are a lot of fun too. This just comes down to personal preference.

Its part of interacting with other people. No ToS or any other kind of rules will ever be able to prevent people acting…Well… Like they usually act. If someone has a short fuse there is nothing you can do about it. If it annoys someone too much there is the block function. Problem solved (the easier way).

How is calling someone F word and cursing you ‘’constructive criticism’’ ???

It’s not.

These kinds of threads pop up a lot, and I say the same thing every time because it’s true. There are quite a few people who act badly in PvP, but there are even more people who don’t. I’m sorry someone was rude to you, Mono.

All you can do is ignore them or block them, and report them if what they say goes far enough to violate the TOS. Make a tab in chat that’s dedicated to the combat log, and switch to it if the entire chat in a match has devolved into insults.

I know being talked to like that is an unpleasant experience, but it’s not going to be norm if you keep playing. I do see these things happen, and it happens way more than it should. But the majority of my matches are still either pleasant or silent.

Turret engi underpowered! Suggested buff

Elegy.2159

Remove the turrets from the utilities.
Make new kit : Turret kit.
Every attack skill is a diffferent turret you can place and will just function as a turret

This way engis can atleast get their toolkit and slickshoes to make it a bit decent.

I think this will balance the complete meta

Not sure if troll.

Ash, keep in mind that turrets can essentially scout. If an engineer leaves their turrets on point and leaves that point, they can know who on the opposing team is decapping just by looking at the combat log. Given that turret engi is at a severe disadvantage away from their turrets, that’s borderline acceptable. But imagine if an engineer could lay turrets on two points, and then successfully contest the third. Way overpowered.

If you want to play turret engi, go for it. If you just want to play engi and be a huge benefit to your team, try another build. You can still have access to turrets part of the time with your elite skill, but you won’t be stuck slotting turrets over kits and losing maneuverability. Or try one turret with two kits, see if that gives you the versatility you’re looking for.

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting that you must be “nice.” I think it’s fair that you must be “decent” though. No matter how competitive you are or how wrapped up in a game you may be, there are real people playing those characters. Some of the things I’ve seen being said in chat are far out of line, and I can’t imagine that you haven’t encountered the same thing at some point. This discussion doesn’t have to be about the merits of kittens vs. carebears. It’s about a very basic, bottom line of respect that you have for other people, and that bottom line gets crossed way too often. PvP is really fun, but it’s hard to keep an active player base when it’s the polar opposite of inviting.

In fact, the only time you should stomp is when you’ve got stability/invuln. Trying to stomp and getting interrupted and potentially killed is far worse than cleaving or ressing.

This is a really good point. There are so many situations where (whatever the player is being flamed for in mapchat) is actually a terrible idea. People sometimes see a profession and assume they’re running a certain build or utility setup, or they’re simply paying no attention to what’s going on. I’ve been flamed for reasons similar to OP – for not rezzing a mesmer on my team when he went down. But he went down in a pool of AoE (didn’t or couldn’t use deception), and I was already at 25% health with my invuln on cooldown from a recent stomp. Yeah right, lol. Right on that.

Effect LOD fps drops

I just wanna be able to see more crowd control effects and not red rings only
Cheers

From what I understand, Effect LOD bottlenecks particle/bloom effects, which are very costly to render. Ticking Effect LOD prevents the majority of these particles from rendering – and those are often the only indication of which skill a “red ring” is. It would be awesome if Anet could add some kind of texture indicator to the AoE for these large fights where rendering particles is an immense clientside strain.

I’m not sure there’s anything you can personally do to improve this. Are you able to leave Effect LOD at its default setting if you move Character Model Quality to low?

If it makes you feel any better, effect details are almost as confusing as having no clues at all. Big fights can quickly turn into a big blue/purple/firey blur.

Outfit Customization

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

Pieces of outfits can’t be mixed and matched because they’re one continuous 3D model. Armor skins are individual models that are individually rigged to fit the character’s skeleton. That’s why outfits don’t clip with themselves – but certain pieces of armor do clip with others. Also why certain parts of certain outfits can’t be hidden – because pieces of outfits are hidden with alpha layers. The hidden pieces are still there, just masked out. That’s not possible for every piece of every outfit.

I doubt the hats are part of the contiguous models/rigging though. It would be very cool if we could at least use those separately.

To the people suggesting “practice,” have you been in practice lately? It’s basically the same as hotjoin – where teams zerg from point to point and exploit team imbalance to secure a win. I don’t see this as a place to legitimately “practice” how to play PvP. It may as well be a different game mode.

OP, you probably did mess up and you probably weren’t the only person on your team that did. Messing up happens. There’s no problem with your team pointing it out or offering advice, but if you’re being belittled, called names or harassed, use the report function. I’m not sure which one of these happened, since I wasn’t there to read it.

Abusing someone just because they played badly in a casual game mode is ridiculous and indefensible.

Map completion being part of WvW is a good thing. A great thing. Hear me out here.

I also had a hard time with the WvW portion of map completion my first time around. I waited weeks, then months for my server to be the color I needed. And even then, enemies were constantly taking our keep and doing a good job of holding it. I started playing (and enjoying) WvW because I went there for the POIs and vistas. I learned how to play effectively and how much fun it could be. And this was when Crystal Desert had almost no presence in WvW. It’s better now than it was, and it might not be if it weren’t for people coming to WvW initially for the map completion.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask your guild if they’re on your server. Ask in map chat. Chances are, a lot of people have the same objective as you. If you see a commander on the map, ask if they’ll help by taking something you need. A lot of the time, they will.

Non-combatants in WvW are a huge liability, as already mentioned. I doubt it’ll ever be implemented for that reason. Ask the community for help! You might even make some new friends.

The way I see it, Condition Damage is what makes Engineers great, so I want to exploit it.

If anything, I want Precision, cause from what I remember, conditions are only applied through critical hits; if that’s the case, I want critical hits to happen as much as possible.

Increase Condition Damage would also be a plus.

I would also want my Vitality to be improved. People say that Toughness and Vitality are more or less the same, except I don’t think Toughness considers Condition Damage.

Overall I want Precision, Condition Damage, and Vitality. However I don’t think that combo exists (e.g. Power, Precision, and Ferocity is Berserker).

Some conditions proc on crit; for instance, burning with incendiary powder and the bleed on crit from sharpshooter. You’re right that precision is important for engineers for this reason. There are lots of ways to ensure you crit enough though. If you’re using berserker’s stats, your crit chance should be passable as-is, especially once you get your trinkets sorted out. You can further enhance your crit chance if you feel you need to – sigil of intelligence is great for this, as are skills that grant fury (+20%) crit chance. You can get fury using Elixir B, utility goggles, or through cooperation with other players.

You’re also correct that toughness does nothing to help you vs. conditions, and vitality does since it simply gives you a larger pool of health. Engineer has pretty good baseline vitality, so you might not need to add as much as you think to feel a difference. Try traiting a bit into alchemy, especially for the traits invigorating speed (more dodges, less dying!) and backpack regenerator, which regenerates health while you’re using a kit. Those two traits are amazing defense for an engineer. If you still feel you need more health, get a couple trinkets with defensive stats. I personally recommend celestial for this, since you get a small amount of everything. Even healing power is useful to you as an engineer. I prefer keeping toughness/vitality about equal when I’m looking for defensive stats (this works well for me), but YMMV. Carrion stats (condition damage, power, vitality) might suit your purposes as well.

Engineer really does excel with power/condi hybrids. Celestial stats aside (which rely a great deal on boons like might for adequate damage output) it’s probably wise to prioritize one over the other. In PvE, I would absolutely recommend focusing on direct damage, since the condition cap can be problematic in PvE. Anywhere else, it’s up to you.

Do keep in mind the difference that might stacking can make. Even if your condition damage is on the low side, might stacking increases it. You can time might stacking to follow your best condition skills (shrapnel grenade, fire bomb) while the conditions are still ticking, and follow with your hardest hitting power based skills (like big ’ol bomb, grenade barrage).

Pistols are condition heavy weapons. They do very little direct damage. If you’re focusing heavily on condition damage, they’re the way to go. Rifle is better for power builds, and hybrids too in my opinion. I do wish we had access to a main hand weapon with decent direct damage, since the shield skills are great and highly utilitarian. Tool kit at least offers a block (as well as respectable direct damage and condition skills) so keep that in mind if you end up using rifle.

New To Game. Class Rundowns?

in PvP

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

There is no class with “most potential”, it’s the player that makes the class, smart choices are what bring in the victory, you can run any build you want but in the end of the day this is a 5vs5 game. Each profession plays differently, they all have strengths and weaknesses, some are great burst, some are great tanks and other offer the best control.

Hi, OP. Welcome to the game!

Supreme is spot on. All the professions are good! As far as which ones are overpowered, this changes constantly. I wouldn’t pick a main profession based on the current meta at any point in time.

Elementalist sounds fitting for your goals – just experiment and play what feels fun to you. Ele has been a very strong part of the meta in all three game modes lately, but this wasn’t always the case. And it may not be the case in the future. That’s not what’s important though, liking your character is.

Ele isn’t always just a strong damage dealer. They can “tank” in their own right, offer loads of team support, or focus on burst damage. Just depends on your build and how you choose to play. They’re quite versatile. All the professions are, but ele stands out to me as one of the most versatile professions, along with engineer.

Keep in mind that you start the game with 5 character slots. Don’t be afraid to use them all. You can always delete a character if you don’t like it and don’t want to spend gems on additional slots.

If your dog is having a seizure, I would think you have far bigger worries than whether or not you get to open the chest at the end of a World Boss event. If you’re having to afk frequently and/or for long stretches of time, perhaps you’d be best served turning off the video game and taking care of business.

So, in theory, anyone with a life should just give up on recreation? I can’t predict when someone is going to knock on my door, I get an urgent call from Nature, or someone in my family starts a fire in the kitchen.

I’m absolutely more worried about my dog than the game in such a circumstance – which is why I get up and take care of it regardless of what’s going on. I don’t expect to be rewarded for an event I walked away from, and I wouldn’t care at all if I came back to the character select screen. But my inability to predict the unpredictable shouldn’t exclude me from being allowed to play a game without a ban. Let’s be serious.

Why does moa remove minions but not turrets?

Posted by: Elegy.2159

Elegy.2159

I can see the logic behind not being to crit buildings since they lack obvious soft spots (a person’s neck and their err… special area), but maybe they should be given another weakness to compensate? Could make them larger with 2-3 points that you can hit to make them susceptible to cleave damage and aoe, after all you would expect to take a turret down faster with a hammer than a bow.

Buildings, yes. Turrets are on flimsy looking little stands though. I imagine hitting something like that with a hammer, you could certainly hit a weak spot. Break the barrel off rifle turret even, for the sake of roleplay. If the devs need to call crit damage to turrets something else, that’s fine with me.

The point is, they’re at an obvious advantage over other AI controlled minions anyway. They don’t rely on pathing, only LOS. Sure, they can’t move, but they have a respectable range which can be extended further through traits. Players can choose to increase the health and armor of them through traits as well. Turret engineer is easy mode for a profession with so much potential – I’d love to see turrets more in line with other similar skills, if only to incentivize active over passive play. Other professions with AI controlled skills can’t rely on their performance the way engineers can rely on turrets. I’m in no way suggesting that turrets are a good build to run, just that the reward/effort ratio is laughably disproportionate compared to what other professions have access to.

Why are we pretending all those people afk during lane defense at Vinewrath are akf because of RL reasons?

Because a minority of them are. Punishing everyone for what amounts to a small percentage of the playerbase exploiting AI and autocast is unacceptable. How do you determine who is and who isn’t legitimately afk? Unless you really want to sit there and log player names and time spent rping a bot?

The people who afk at events in the Silverwastes intentionally really kitten me off. But, like I said, I have to afk too sometimes. And I afk because I really need to, and I really don’t have time to fully log out in the event my dog has a seizure or I suddenly really need to bio. How much would it suck to be penalized for that?

(ie, turrets get to be called objects so they are immune to critical hits and conditions too, hence they can be used in team fights where as mm Pets die in abiut 4 seconds and the MM can be trained down)

Ron, I’m quoting this specific part of your post because I feel this is an issue as well, albeit an entirely different one. I don’t quite understand why turrets can’t be critically hit from a balance/design standpoint. AI controlled minions/pets/whatever are common, and the majority of them do take critical damage. I get that turrets are immobile and in a different structure category, but I’m not sure why this can’t be changed.

Having moa destroy turrets rather than spare minions might be where this is headed, but moa elite problems only scrape the surface of the overbearing problems with AI. I get that pathing is difficult to refine and may not improve in this generation of gaming, but AI controlled profession mechanics need to at least be balanced to be on the same playing field. There really are a plethora of builds that infrequently or hesitantly used because of problems like these.

The afkers are a problem sometimes, but one minute is way too short for a kick. My dog has seizures that last longer than a minute sometimes. “Sorry, dog I’ve had for almost two decades. I GOTTA KILL THIS GIANT PLANT!”

When is the ranger going to be nerfed down?

Rangers can be annoying, but they’re not overpowered. Fighting them takes some spatial awareness since they’re at a huge advantage from above and at range. Reflection is your friend.

you cannot kill him/her cause of the pet regen…

Yep. Their pets are an important mechanic for the profession. Pets can eat cc and remove conditions. But if the pet is dead, it can do neither of those things, and the ranger is SOL.

Why does moa remove minions but not turrets?

I’ve seen Anet employees playing every profession. Grouch loving engi has nothing to do with it. I’m sure someone loves necromancer too.

I’m thinking this is either an oversight, or intentional. If it’s intentional I’d love to know the reasoning behind it, because I don’t see it.

Good question, OP.

It should really be more consistent. Either moa leaves the minions or destroys other AI controlled objects as well.

Even I now hate pvp dailies

I fought a team of four longbow rangers and a thief (team Throat Yogurt, lol) today. Both teams were premade, and we were in unranked helping a newer player in our guild l2p. We rolled courtyard, and it appeared that the entire opposing team voted for that map (one player on mine voted for courtyard).

Of course we lost by a huge margin. But it was HILARIOUS. I hate the PvP profession dailies too, but come on, you have to try to find some humor in these things.

Guild wars 2 tattoo sleeve idea

He’s looking for a tattoo sleeve. Not a real tattoo.

A tattoo sleeve means a tattoo that surrounds the arm. I’ve never heard the term referring to anything but a real tattoo. Is this a thing? Is there some place where you can customize your own fabric sleeves to wear? Seriously?

The gw2 concept art is pretty epic, I agree. But have you found an artist that can replicate that style? An idea for a tattoo is only as good as its execution. This style is full of soft shading and gradients, and wouldn’t look the same with a heavy outline. The heavy outline covers a multitude of sins, so you might want to find an artist capable of this before you get too invested in the idea.

I wouldn’t personally want a tattoo that directly references a game too strongly. I’m not sure yours does – just depends on how straightforward the symbolism is going to go.

I have a lot of tattoos, and I’ve never had an issue with my employer about that. I’ve worked in law offices and retail and medical environments. Not sure if this is common (employers not caring) or if I’ve just been lucky. I’m in my 30’s and I don’t regret a single one. I waited a long time before getting any idea inked though, and spent many hours talking to artists and looking through their portfolios before I made a decision. I strongly advise you to do the same.

This is common, unfortunately.

Not everyone in PvP is rude though. The rude people just happen to be very vocal a lot of the time.

[Suggestion] Home Portal Stone

It teleports you to your character’s home instance, which is race dependent. If you’re an Asura, to Rata Sum you go. If you want to go “home” to Hoelbrak, you need to be a Norn.

Too bad, i just got excited to not have to grind AC and CoE anymore for sentinel trinkets.

You’ll make faster progress using the PvP dungeon reward tracks. The reward tracks give you dungeon skins as well as tokens. Just a suggestion, in case you tire of those paths and need a change of pace.
