I once built a zerg commander-esque Reaper for roaming.
Little to no damage but extremely durable.

It was hyper boring.

My 1 vs 1 fights usually lasted 20-30 mins each and mostly ended with both parties just walking away when neither was going to die.

full melee druids seems to be a thing now. great mobility, imobilize/daze, spammable bear maul. great damage. great healing. invis leap through smoke field too.
I fought one JQ full melee druid and he was very skilled. I think it is an extremely deadly and cool build in skilled hands. Rarely see such full melee druids though.
Usually staff/LB.
still hoping to hear form thieves/mesmers on how they find druids now.

I play DH in wvw and I’d say I’m either at or very close to the skill ceiling of a power-built DH in terms of 1v1s and roaming.

DH is a pretty strong counter to power-built thieves (especially D/P) and borderline hard-counter. It’s still possible for DD to win and as a power DH, I have been beaten by very skilled DD before (and even recently, within last 1-2 patches). Here are the patterns I’ve noticed from my defeats to DD:

  • They are always extremely zerky. They put either very little or nothing into toughness and vitality (perhaps 14-15k hp so they don’t get insta-downed by a wombo-combo with ToF, otherwise full zerk). A skilled, full zerk thief with power/crit food and utils + 25 bloodlust is actually quite the nightmare for me as a DH. I have to be on my toes the entire time and I’d say in a roaming situation (non-duel), my chances of victory are only about 60%.
  • They tend to run pulmonary impact: It’s extra damage, plus neither of the other two master-tier traits in DD help nearly as much. One duel I had against a S/P DD long ago (right after HoT dropped) was completely controlled by the thief because of pistol whip + pulmonary impact.
  • If they can manage to repeatedly stealth without getting interrupted (shield 5, LB3, or pulled), they can generally outlast my sustain. After my heal, f3/f2, RF, second heal and second round of f3/f2, I’m a sitting duck. If I can’t end the fight before then, I usually lose.
  • In a duel/1v1 roaming situation, they tend to run channeled vigor over withdraw, and only engage me out of stealth when at or near full health. A good DD knows full well that a good DH can output 8-12k damage nearly instantly if just a couple key attacks crit.
  • In 1v1s I’ve lost more to D/P than to staff. Staff has a bit better sustain on it, but staff 5 spam is pretty easy for even a moderately experienced DH to deal with so there isn’t much damage to be had so long as DH avoids the staff 2 + steal combo. Also, D/P makes it easy for the thief to get off a backstab combo (very high damage) before traps activate.
  • Good D/P thieves will lay on a burst, dodge back out, then sit a little bit out of melee range waiting for me to heal or f2. They will successfully interrupt either, multiple times in a row too which usually forces me to blow through my sustain a lot faster, meanwhile they only use a bit of initiative for the interrupts. This forces me to constantly be on the offensive which means they’re controlling the fight at least a little bit.

I don’t think I can speak much to condi thief’s efficacy as I have only encountered a couple and it ended in stalemate both times.

From my experience though: Just taking CoP + smite condi essentially makes me impervious to any amount of damage a condi-thief can output, but I can’t kill them either so it’s a stalemate.

i agree. but only if it is something easy to implement. it is a minor QOL improvement for sure.
But if it isn’t easy to implement, a simple team chat shout out will suffice too.
There are more important things to concentrate on in WvW.

DH doesn’t have any true hard counter. Closest might be a Revenant. Daredevil can’t really handle the amount of PBAoE damage and sustain that comes out of a DH. You either fight to stalemate, or someone makes a mistake first.

I believe Sindreneer put up some videos of him fighting various classes, some were dragon hunter and he beat them.

Personally I haven’t found them to be a complete counter but most of the time they aren’t worth fighting as you have to get through about 30s of either hazardous AoE or blocks/invulnerability before your opening comes up. I generally just keep ranged till they’ve finished F3 twice then they’re easier targets and you can abuse pulmonary impact.

I will however say you can’t compare something like a power D/D Daredevil which is possibly the worst spec they can run vs the best spec a DH can run which would be trap heal and various other traps DH, possibly with lights judgement which would shut it down hard.

I’m a new DH of about 4 months now, and I’m mostly curious about the general sentiment that DH hardcounters all forms of DareDevil builds.
What do I mean by hardcounter? One clear example of hardcounter would be LB/Staff Druid vs Reaper/Necro. No fight there really, druid wins easily. In the words of one of the druid roamers that I know, “I’ve never lost to a reaper/necro on my druid”.

My main question is: Do Dragonhunters truly hardcounter Daredevils at all skill levels? Will it be a case of an even 50-50 match-up between 2 highly skilled players, and not the general sentiment that DH counters DareDevil to the point that it will never be 50-50 even at a very high skill level?

  • If you take a highly skilled and experienced DareDevil to fight a highly skilled and experienced DH, does the DH truly hold a class advantage over all forms of DD builds?
  • Is the general sentiment of DH hardcountering DareDevil due to the lower skill-level needed to play a DH and at lower skill levels (which makes up a larger majority of the players, DH and DD included), they find it hard to defeat a DH?
  • At high skill levels, is it actually 50-50 and the general sentiment of DH hadcountering DareDevil is a myth?

I’m mostly interested in views on solo encounters in WvW of DH vs DD.
Not so much on PvP (since contesting a point becomes important, but is probably not the priority for a DD to contest a point with a DH solo) but would welcome these views too.

In the 4 months of fighting DDs 1 vs 1 in WvW, I generally struggle most against condi D/D DD and P/P DD. I put it down to me not being skilled and experienced enough though and am getting better and better at fighting them. I’ve been defeated twice in a row by a staff DD from JQ’s FEAR guild and I admit I got outplayed. Which led me to wondering, at high skill levels, is it actually 50-50 and the general sentiment of DH hadcountering DD is a myth?

I’m not experienced/skillful enough on my DH to know if this is true or not, but would love to hear from highly skilled DHs and DDs if there really is credibility, even at high skill levels, that DH holds a considerable advantage over all forms of DDs.

“Eye of the Beholder” Basically, perspective.

People are going to use which word they want depending on a bunch of things including their personality, mood, how hard they where beaten, how much they got hard coutners or outplayed etc. saying “good/skilled” is the respectful variant, where “cheese” is the disrespectful version trying to downplay the achievement of the opponent by claiming he wasn’t the one solely responsible for the win.

It’s humans.

I don’t know how to describe someone who’s good. All I know is that it doesn’t matter if they’re using a cheesy/OP/meta build or not. I can tell the difference between player skill and build carry. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.

A good example of skill is hard to come by as there aren’t exactly that many even match ups but can almost certainly be shown when beating an opponant on a class that soft or hard counters you/your build

I’ve fought 3 different druids since patch on my dragonhunter and the results were 1 win and 2 losses for me.

My overall sentiment is that the 15 secs astral cd helps balance the class slightly but not by much since they still have very strong range and mobility and invis uptime. The usual fights don’t require them to enter astral too quickly if they manage their mobility and invis well, while pressuring their opponents during the 15 sec gap. It does make the fights closer though as we have more chances to end the fight before they enter astral again.

1 vs 1 fights still extremely tough against them, on my DH at least. Not enough on demand gap-closer and interrupts to break their healing.

I’m interested to know the opinions of daredevils and chronos though who generally have easier access to interrupts like steal/headshot and shatter/mantra on what their experiences are like now vs a druid.

I think there isn’t any definite idea on what is ‘best’ and what is ‘cheesy’.

Often we see a guy winning and we say he is strong and skilled, good, great, best.
Then another guy comes along and say no he is not, he is just using a cheesy build.

And then we see another guy and say this guy is using a cheesy build and thus he wins most of the fights.
Then another guy comes along and say no he is not, he is really good, and has skills, great, best.

so…which is which? when is a guy ‘best’ and when is he ‘cheesy’?
what defines cheese? what defines skill? could he be using a cheesy build and yet uses it with skill?
Can cheese and skill co-exist? Are these people then considered the best?

what are your success rates against druids and berserkers though?
I don’t think I’m too bad of a reaper/necro but I weep when I fight them in the current meta.

druids too much range and mobility. they kite and knockback my reaper and necro to the death.
berserkers have too much healing on primal bursts which is hard for a power reaper/necro whose main ways of negating is to tank using shroud…even if you dodge his stun, his follow up primal burst like axe will still be within range of you and you need to use another dodge again =/ if you eat his stun, you need to waste a stun break and then dodge is primal burst =/ we don’t have so many stun breaks and dodge to last the fight =/

With the buff to axe, I am looking to try my power axe build again. Would like to ask for opinions though on which is more suitable for solo roam, mainly interested in solo fights during roaming. Reaper or vanilla necro? Power axe build. I dont mind not being able to escape outnumbered fights, but would like to have a stronger build for solo fights against the current meta. Thanks!

Also do u solo roamers stand any chance against a good staff longbow druid? How about berserkers with their many stuns and primal healing?

Need Cannon Mastery and slight tweaks

I think the cannon siege addition is great.
But perhaps to unlock the full range and skills on the cannon, we should restrict it to cannon mastery.
The more points you put into the mastery, the more skills you can use on the cannon and the further and larger radius you can hit.
Similar to most of the other siege in the game right now where you need to put mastery skills in to unlock its full potential.

Also these mobile cannons should not be allowed to hit through gates or over walls.
I don’t know if this is doable, but if someone was allowed to build a cannon on an adjacent hill overlooking a tower or keep, he could potentially destroy all the defensive siege in there.

and give mobile cannons a decay timer if there isn’t currently.

If the above could be implemented, I think it will be great to have the cannons made permanent!

WvW accolades remind me of soccer.

Those who generally win acclamation and recognition are those who score the goals. Then come the midfielders who support and supply the passes for the goal scorers. Then come the defenders who prevent the opposition from scoring. Then come the goalkeeper who is the final line of defense and usually the least recognized along with the defenders.

Goal scorers are like our Commanders.
In the lime light. Tagged up. Followed by hundereds of warriors. Leading the charge at the front. Destroying enemies. Taking keeps. Hurling abuses. They are generally seen as heroes.

Goalkeepers are like our Scouts.
Way back at the end. Nobody notices him…until things go wrong. Then they realize, someone has been refreshing our siege! Someone has been keeping watch on the keeps and towers! Someone has been yak walking and defending our camps!

I write this, inspired by one of my server’s greatest scouts, Tarnished Coast’s Pitsipopaki. I’m sure there are many more heroes in the servers, but scouts generally go unrecognized, and I hope this thread can be a platform, a start to recognize our server’s unspoken heroes. I witnessed him refreshing siege tirelessly on our home borderlands for up to 4 areas, 2 keeps and 2 towers, for hours upon hours. Whenever I see him online, he is in our home BL, refreshing siege, scouting, defending camps and objectives… Such dedication!

Share your server’s unspoken heroes and their heroic deeds!
Also, I sincerely hope Anet can come up with more benefits for these scouts who put in such a tireless shift keeping our homelands safe!

But my 2 cents is sword+shield.

1) because it looks cooler than scepter + shield
2) because shield 5 interrupt is easier to pull off with sword blink and when in melee range

I’ve been seeing extreme reactions from people when they see druids and they just go berserk with emotions when they catch and kill the druid. Some go out of the way to chase druids to the ends of the earth.

Thanks! With the radiant line alone that gives fury + 10% crit = 30% crit uptime, would you think I need any more crit stats?

Even better is running 1H Strength, Sword, and Scepter which essentially gives you 45% crit for free (Sword’s Symbol grants Fury with decent uptime). After that, you can still get away with Vipers for the extra precision to help reach 100% burn duration. I’d use enough Dire to reach the amount of Toughness you need, and then use either Vipers or Carrion depending on how much Vitality I feel I needed.

Burn Guard is something very similar to what I run myself. You have everything you really need except maybe some numerical defense.

One powerful burst is: Start in Scepter, use Shield of Wrath 2s before engaging. Chains of Light + Judge’s Intervention, Smite, swap to Sword, Flashing Blade, then double throw Zealot’s Fire. If everything fires you should easily hit 30k+ over 5s, and not much is going to survive that. The nature of Burn Guardian also lends itself well to sustained damage, so your auto attacks will still be applying good pressure. Your weaknesses are being bursted yourself without cooldowns, so just try to never let off the gas. Don’t forget you have a burst every ~10s by double throwing Zealot’s Fire, and Purging Flames is both defensive and a very good offensive option when the enemy has used up condition clears.

No attack should depend on negation

There should not be skills that depend on blocking/evading/invulerability to negate because Reapers were designed to tank hits with shroud as its defensive tool and shroud does not negate attacks.
Creating skills that require the opponent to have to negate it is unfair to Reapers.

For example, adrenal health from berserker’s primal burst. You can’t tank this otherwise the berserker heals and heals. This is extremely unfair to reapers who basically depend on shroud as its main defensive mechanism to tank and take the hit.

I complained a lot about how OP berserker’s primal burst AH healing are as a Reaper. But when I switched to dragonhunter, this problem was manageable and surmountable. I had the tools to fight a berserker. Blocks.

As a reaper, this problem is not manageable and not surmountable. Reaper is the only class that fails completely at damage negation. We were designed to tank and giving enemy skills that require negation and not tanking is extremely unfair to reapers because we got no negation to counter those skills.

So let me get this straight if I may; you are saying that Necro/Reaper requires more skill to play and you find it harder than Dragonhunter so therefore it should be made easier for you?
Mate, get out.

Crit is a little important for proccing Radiant Fire and to enhance your power damage, but other than RF you don’t proc burning through crits.

Thanks! With the radiant line alone that gives fury + 10% crit = 30% crit uptime, would you think I need any more crit stats?

  • Health Gained per Adrenaline Bar Spent (15s): 2,475 (0.3)
  • Maximum stacks: 3
  • Interval: 1s

Notes

  • A single full bar of adrenaline while in Berserk mode gives 3 stacks.
  • The amount of healing generated per stack is reduced by 10% in PvP.

This was the nail in the coffin for Berserker specs. I understand that the spvp team does not handle class balances at this point but who does? Who should be reading this thread? Where should I be posting this stuff?

At any rate, this was too much of a nerf. Might want to consider downing the duration from 15s to 10s and increase the maximum stack from 3 to 6 or maybe even to 9. Also, this certainly doesn’t need a pvp penalty of 10%.

DH, Revenant, Scrapper, Druid, Tempest, Chrono and Reaper all have enormous sustain capability right now, even while running DPS specs. If we want Berserker and Daredevil to keep up, their heal sustain needs a bit of tweaking. That or the abundant sustain of other classes needs to be toned down.

Berserkers sustain are strong enough. I think its more of a L2P issue here for you. You can watch players like Rom and Tarcis for some good warrior plays.

No attack should depend on negation

Blind. Negating the next attack of the enemy who gets inflicted with it. Available for necromancers/reapers.

So basically, saying that necromancer doesn’t have any mechanic to negate attacks is false.

To add a minor but relevant distinction:

Blind is negated by Resistance (Which war in particular has in spades). It can also be cleared with insta cast clears while channeling bursts.

Block is not dependent on the targets condition.

To add another minor relevant distinction:
Block is negated by “Nothing can save you!” from reapers, making all their attacks in the next seconds unblockable. And is negated by actually every unblockable attack (especially unblockable cc skills).

So does this mean block doesn’t count as a way to negate attacks as well?

Sustain meta over the top?

A few classes can eat huge bursts and as long as it isn’t fatal, heal back up in a very short time.
Skills aren’t the deciding factor in many fights…

Often you can outplay your opponent but if you aren’t using a heavy sustain build, you will lose.
If both parties are using heavy sustain builds, it pretty much ends in a stalemate.

Mistakes can be made but pretty much healed easily.
I’m not going to name classes but…

What are your thoughts on sustain currently?
Specifically, is it more fun now with sustain being meta or was it more fun when power builds pretty much wrecked each other in a few decisive moves?

Carrion, Viper, splashes of Dire all make for some good options. Guardian weapons all scale well with Power because they don’t naturally apply conditions, so hybrid is almost always the way to go.

Burning is usually applied extremely quickly, so even if they cleans you’ll be applying it right back. With Radiant Fire you have a condi burst every 10s on Torch, and Purging Flames is the condition version of Test of Faith. Between those two and the frequent application of your other weapon skills, you can compete well enough. Additional conditions are always beneficial, so don’t forget about sigils and the like.

Is crit chance important for a condi guard?

Also would like to ask for WvW roaming if it is viable as a condi guard as I think the only condi we have is a burn and with only one condi isn’t it easy to get cleared?

I like to RP by myself but I also understand that many people are not into it..I just don’t care…
My thief asura when is caught into the ratasum prisons has always to create an escape plan ending with a “SMOKEBOMB!” to escape…it just makes everything more fun for me XD
And that happens for all the other characters…my norn do not like water…my necro is a dervish from gw1 that remained alive with necromancy, so he knows everything about the old lore..
I wish there was a way to connect with the other RP players in a server RP only…that would feel amazing XD.

Thieves have the tools to fight guards.
They just need to go pistol pistol.
Range and kite the guard.
I’ve seen many skilled pistol thieves kill guards.

There should not be skills that depend on blocking/evading/invulerability to negate because Reapers were designed to tank hits with shroud as its defensive tool and shroud does not negate attacks.
Creating skills that require the opponent to have to negate it is unfair to Reapers.

For example, adrenal health from berserker’s primal burst. You can’t tank this otherwise the berserker heals and heals. This is extremely unfair to reapers who basically depend on shroud as its main defensive mechanism to tank and take the hit.

I complained a lot about how OP berserker’s primal burst AH healing are as a Reaper. But when I switched to dragonhunter, this problem was manageable and surmountable. I had the tools to fight a berserker. Blocks.

As a reaper, this problem is not manageable and not surmountable. Reaper is the only class that fails completely at damage negation. We were designed to tank and giving enemy skills that require negation and not tanking is extremely unfair to reapers because we got no negation to counter those skills.

Unlock story areas for all characters

completing a story area on one character should unlock the area and Waypoints for all characters too.

I don’t want to do it again and again on all my characters…

For example the story episode to unlock access to ember bay…

I got like 18 characters..playing it 18 times is…=/

One thing we all face in WvW is that 99% of the players want to be in the thick of action with the main zerg. 1% of the players are roamers who don’t listen to commanders. When we see swords on a keep for example, we call out and say any eyes on the keep? while 50 players run around with the commander and nobody volunteers to run to the keep to check. Or we say, take back the supply camps! we are running low on supplies. But everybody sticks to the commander and nobody breaks away. Or the Commander says, can someone tick the sieges? Nobody does it. Can someone walk this camp’s yak?…

Zerglings not listening to orders? Roamers not listening to orders?

Here I present the solution: Military Orders

Allow commanders to issue Military Orders to squad members.
Military Orders are definite orders that squad members have to obey. These are issued from the top brass and disobedience or failure to execute the Military Order successfully will result in Military Punishment.
Successful completion on the other hand will result in rewards.

Standard Orders and Punishments could include:

  • Take a particular supply camp (within 5 minutes)
    - disobedience or failure punishment = freezing of WvW participation points for 5 minutes.
    - Successful completion of order = instant gain of current WvW participation points on top of the usual gains.
  • Defend a particular supply camp (for 5 minutes)
    - disobedience or failure punishment = freezing of WvW participation points for 5 minutes.
    - Successful completion of order = instant gain of current WvW participation points on top of the usual gains.
  • Scout a location (for e.g. scout the NE area and report on enemy movement for 5 minutes)
    - disobedience or failure punishment = freezing of WvW participation points for 5 minutes.
    - Successful completion of order = instant gain of current WvW participation points on top of the usual gains.
  • Sentry a location (for e.g. be the sentry in Hills for 5 minutes)
    - disobedience or failure punishment = freezing of WvW participation points for 5 minutes.
    - Successful completion of order = instant gain of current WvW participation points on top of the usual gains.

Commanders have the power to issue Military Orders and Punishments when they meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least 20 men in their squad (when a commander reaches this number of squad members, he is officially recognized by the server as a chosen Commander and when a chosen Commander is present on a map, all server players on the map will automatically be forced to join the squad. There can be more than one chosen Commander on the map, in which case, the player is given a choice to join his/her preferred chosen Commander)
  • Different orders require the assigning of a min-max number of squad members.
    - For example, taking or defending a supply camp require at least 2 member receiving the order and a maximum of 5 members. Or scouting require at least 1 member receiving the order and a maximum of 3 members

Hello Dragonhunters!
As you can tell from my signature, I used to be a Reaper main.
Since joining the guardian ranks a couple of months ago, I am loving it for WvW solo and small party roaming.

Guardians have such a strong burts combo that if you land it right, you can take out an opponent swiftly.

I found a new combo that I rarely see people do in their videos and I would like to share with you all.

I use scepter/focus and sword/shield.
I’ve been dealing massive burst with this combo and hope you find it useful too!

scepter 3 > blink > scepter 2 > weapon swap (hydro sigil) > Test of faith > F1 > sword 3 > F1 pull > shield 5 > sword 2

This is one combo chain that does massive damage.
Especially F1 pull > shield 5 over Test of Faith trap dealing double the damage when you pull him over the trap and then shield 5 to push him over the trap again.

Ways to make WvW Anet's top priority

I think we have been hearing much of how WvW has been neglected. Many of the updates and changes etc. have been devoted to PvP and PvE.
PvP championship teams fighting for like $200,000 worth of prizes and PvE getting a lot of content updates etc.
WvW has recently seen some decent attention and improvements though.

Rather than complain about WvW being neglected, why don’t we brainstorm for the reasons why it is neglected and how we can solve it?
How do we make WvW balances and updates and improvements Anet’s top priority?

One reason I can think of is, perhaps most of Anet’s income might come from PvE players who make up the bulk of the players who pay for gems.

We can solve this by having WvW core players spend huge amount of money to buy gems so that Anet will see that most of their income now comes from WvW players and they will devote more time to WvW balances and updates.

Feel free to post your thoughts and solutions!
Lets think of ways to make WvW Anet’s top priority.

I am still very impressed by Cake’s many solo roaming videos like Vaans and another DH I can’t remember.

I don’t play on EU, but my own experience fighting in NA is that not many players in NA exhibit the same skill as Cake members. I feel that NA roamers are strong because of their build and not because of their skill. I am pretty average myself, and outplay many NA roamers, but still lose to many of them because their build was just…cheesier than mine.

Cake is different. I watch their videos, non-cheese looking builds. and they win. with skill.
