World vs World Achievements

Ive been working on Yak slapper. Highest I have in a week was around 960 doing the exact technique your talking about, but the 3 top camps, not the 3 bottom ones.

The reason why I used the bottom 3 is because in my personal experience, it was a lot easier to traverse through the map and reach them. Especially since you don’t have to run through as much dangerous territory since you’re close to your waypoint.

Of course, having your team not take those 3 camps is hard, which is why I used 3 dolyaks as my example, and 6 as a secondary “hardcore” version.

I was thinking of working on Yakslapper, and was considering it for a long time (I love the word Intercepter… and Sentinel… and Yakslapper [remember when the achievement had the title Ultimate Intercepter?]) and I thought it would be 100,000 Dolyaks. That meant that if I, every day, killed 100 yaks, it would still take me 1,000 days, or just under 3 years. Of course, 100 yaks isn’t a lot, but this was back when everyone was flipping everything (still happens) and before solo-yakking was actually point-effective for your world. I figured the only amount of yaks I would have to kill to get the achievement in a reasonable time would be 500-1,000 per day.

For most of these achievements there are two ways of thinking about it…

A reasonable time to finish an ungodly amount of objectives (per day, and not humanly possible).
Or…
An ungodly amount of time to finish a reasonable amount of objectives (per day, and humanly possible, but not probable due to players most likely not caring after a year).

Anyways, I should probably stop procrastinating and do my Calculus homework.

EDIT:

I’d like to say that this is a double post because the top post is part of my OP statement, and this is a response. I’d like to say that my OP statement is a triple post (with nirvana in between) because it was >10,000 letters, meaning it had to be 3 posts.

—Capturing Stonemist—
So, let’s say that Stonemist gets flipped somewhere between 1-5 times per day. I know this is unrealistic, but this is all theoretical math. Now, if it gets flipped 1-5 times per day, that means you have the possibility of capturing it 1-3 times per day. So, with that in mind, let’s say that it only requires 100,000 captures to gain the title.

100,000 captures / 3 captures/day = 33,333.333… days
33,333.333… days / 365.25 days/year = a little over 91 years

Okay, jeez, that sounds very unrealistic. So let’s say that Stonemist gets flipped 12 times a day, all by your server, somehow.

(100,000 captures) / (12 captures/day) = 8333.333… days
(8333.333… days) / (365.25 days/year) = a little under 23 years

WOAH THERE! 23 YEARS?! Jeez, so let’s fine-tune this and see how many flips per day you can get it to make it a reasonable amount of time (5 years, let’s say).

(5 years) * (365.25 days/year) = 1826.25 days
(100,000 captures) / (1826.25 days) = 54.757 captures/day.

So we need to capture stonemist 55 times a day for FIVE YEARS STRAIGHT to get the title, assuming it’s at 100,000. Really? Not including breaking down the doors and fighting, it takes 10 minutes to capture stonemist. 5 minutes of your RI and 5 minutes of their RI. That means in an 8 hour workday, you’re able to capture Stonemist…

(1 capture) / (10 minutes) = 0.1 captures/minute
(0.1 captures/minute) * (60 minutes/hour) = 6 captures/hour
(6 captures/hour) * (8 hours/day) = 48 captures/day

Wow, that looks vaguely familiar to the math I just did. So you’re telling me that Stonemist needs to get flipped like a camp for 8 hours a day so that you can get the achievement in just under 6 years?

—Second Afterword—
Kinda ran out of room, and then needed to ninja edit this, so it’s going to be in an awkward spot with nirvana’s post right above mine, but whatever.

Ultimate Dominator is the only objective that is reasonable. You can easily wrack up large amounts of kills in WvW (not necessarily through skill, but through zerging. I’ll stop right here or I’ll rant about mindless zerging) and 250,000 is easily do-able. Everything else really is not.

Note: PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS NOT A HATE-THREAD. THIS IS A THREAD TRYING TO INFORM OTHER PLAYERS.

I do not want players getting infracted for posting in this thread, I simply want people to know that the system is flawed in such a way that it makes Legendaries look like CoF p1 runs.

—Tl;dr—
tl;dr: Thanks for reading through if you did. If you didn’t, math states that it’s very, very improbable of getting any of these achievements other than Ultimate Dominator, even for hard-core players.

WvWvW: Need ORBs to Return

in WvW

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

In terms of the hacking problem, what about: whoever picks up the orb goes into a transformed state where you have fixed set of skills (or even no skills) and no buffs can be applied to you (possible as golems currently can’t be buffed).

If you teleport, you drop the orb (there are bundles in the game that are dropped upon teleport, so this is possible).

If the server detects you are moving too fast, you’re definitely hacking and the orb is dropped, your file is forwarded to the ban-team, and you’re banned. (As you have no skills and can take no buffs, “moving too fast” shouldn’t be too hard to detect.)

But if you’re lagging, you can be perceived as a hacker and subsequently banned. Especially if you’re moving in a large zerg. Lag can potentially do weird things with packets.

—Yakslapping—

Starting with Yakslapper, let’s see how long it will take you to finish it.
Assuming you’re in a side borderlands where you don’t own 2-3 camps and towers/keeps, it’s possible to kill up to 6 Dolyaks every 5 minutes, but I’m going to go with a reasonable route of 3 per 5 minutes (this is easily done by going to the top left of the borderlands, and just killing the 2 Dolyaks out of the western camp, and the 1 Dolyak out of the northern camp).

You have 1,000,000 Dolyaks to kill, and every 5 minutes (how long they respawn, I won’t count the time it takes them, or you, to move, so they die as soon as they spawn) you kill 3.

3kills / 5minutes = 0.6 kills/minute
(0.6kills/min) * 60minutes = 36 kills/hour
36 kills/hour * 8hours (one day) = 288 kills/day
(1,000,000 kills) / (288 kills/day) = 3472.222… days required.

Now, I know some of you are going to be saying, “WELL I CAN KILL 6 DOLYAKS EVERY RESPAWN” (because it is possible by going through the bottom of a borderland and hitting all 6 at every interval, it’s just very risky and highly unlikely), so, you simply double the speed at which you kill, making it…
(1,000,000 kills) / (2 * 288 kills/day) = 1736.111… days required.

Either way, 3472.222 days is the equivalent of a little over 9.5 years.
1736.111 days is a little over 4.75 years.

This means that to get either of this specific achievement, you must be working non-stop (as if it were a real job, 8 hours a day) for 5-10 years. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE DAYS OFF, MEANING YOU WORK 365.25 DAYS A YEAR.

—Escorting—

Now, let’s go to the Dolyak Escort. This achievement is awkward, but I took the path from -InsertColor-water Camp to -InsertColor-lake Tower using Runes of the Centaur to speed up the Dolyak. The route took approximately 2minutes and 30seconds to complete, not including the time it takes for the Dolyak to run back. Assuming it never gets attacked, we’ll say it takes 3minutes (just being a little overgenerous).

You have to escort the Dolyak 500,000 times. If the shortest path takes 3minutes each time, then the math is simpler than before.

(500,000 escorts) / (3 minutes/escort) = 166666.666… minutes
(166666.666… minutes) / (60 minutes/hour) = 2777.777… hours
(2777.777 hours) / (8 hours/day) = 347.222222 days.

Escorting a Dolyak will take you just under a year working at the standard workday everyday.

—Capturing—

Captures take about 10 minute for a full round of camps in the borderlands (just flipping). That’s 6 camps every 10 minutes, and you need 100,000 camps.

(100,000 camps) / (0.6 camps/minute) = 166666.666… minutes.

Hey, that sounds familiar… so that means that this one will also take just under a year.

—Defending—

Defending takes 3 minutes. Assuming someone is constantly sieging a wall and you’re constantly repairing it (pretty mindless and gets you the defense without risking yourself too much), this means that you have to stay put for a while. Let’s just say that it’s 100,000 defends for any given achievement.

(100,000 defends) * (3 minutes / defend) = 300,000 minutes
(300,000 minutes) / (60 minutes / hour) = 5000 hours
(5000 hours) / (8 hours / day) = 625 days
(625 days) / (365.25 days / year) = a little over 1.71 years

Nearly 2 years of running back and forth repairing a wall.

—Conclusion—

All of these sound very enjoyable. I really don’t see what the point of having unattainable achievements with titles attached to them. I can possibly see a few people who have stuck fast to their goals for YEARS on end without fail getting one… or maybe two (if they repair a wall while getting attacked) achievements in the course of GW2’s lifetime. I really hope I’m not the only person that has noticed this.

—Afterword—

These achievements are all harder than reaching level 80 in the tutorial.

For this one, I took a human Necromancer, decked him out with a level 1 Dagger and Warhorn, and started killing mobs. Each mob gives 3 exp. From there, you take the amount of exp it takes to get to 80 (4,860,359) and start working the math.

I ran around for 1 full minute and managed to kill 8 mobs. Using that for my math…

(4860359 exp) / (3 exp/mob) / (8 mobs/minute) / (60 minutes/hour) / (8 hours/day) / (365.25 days/year) = ~1.15 years

Yes, this is longer than certain achievements using the math I used above, HOWEVER this is also a safe route which has no influence on other players. You don’t need to rely on other players to be attacking a place, nor do you need to rely on players NOT attacking a certain place (or thing). I find it ridiculously sad that it’s easier to hit LDoA in GW2 than it is to get the open world PvP achievements.

First off, set your frame limiter to 30 or 60 fps (if you’re so used to having it at 120 fps and can’t abide anything lower than that, well I doubt that’s you since you’re stuck at 16-60, but if you HAVE to, try putting it there). This will stop the game from trying to work too hard even when it can’t, and will actually give you[r machine] a better time.

Secondly, tone down your shadows, like I said before, that is one of the most intensive settings in [almost] any game. From there, just mix and match with other settings until you find what you’re comfortable with (in terms of FPS vs graphics), I’m sure you can run with nearly everything max, but shadows might want to be med/low/off.

Also, tweak LoD distance and reflections. I’m not sure if you like to look far off into the distance and having mobs render. In WvW it’s useful, but since you’re having fps problems, it’s also going to be a larger problem in WvW.

Have you done the latest living story? A waypoint got added to Divinity’s reach with the latest patch, it’s in a bar somewhere in the eastern commons.

Thanks, that was it. I visited that earlier, but with a different alt.

What’s annoying is that I have 99.999999% WC — I’m missing a single vista in the green keep area in the Eternal Borderlands, but because my server has never been green, we’ve never controlled that area (at least not while I’ve been online). So because I don’t officially have WC, every time they add a new bit of content with a WP or a POI, I have to go back and find it or else I won’t get WC when/if I finally do get that elusive Vista. But anyone who already has WC doesn’t have to go through this rigamarole. Drives me nuts.

Actually, we do because otherwise when you open your map it says 99% in big, giant, condescending letters. And yes, they get bigger. And yes, they become very, very condescending. Either that or my OCD kicks in and punches me.

Why aren't dungeon tokens collectibles?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

Short answer: Because Anet wants your money.

That doesn’t apply to anything. You can store them in the bank, which CAN create a problem, but if you have that many dungeon tokens, then buying another tab isn’t out of your pocket (even in terms of ingame gold). You can also create a character to get 24 (20 + 4slot bag) inventory spaces to hold it, not including the 4 bag slots which can give you up to 76 more slots (20 * 4 because four 20 slot bags, but then you have to take off the 4 slot bag, so -4), which means you’d have, without spending any gems, 100 slots to store tokens, meaning up to 25,000 and at least (using all the slots, with all slots being filled with 250 of any, and the remainder holding 1 of each different dungeon token) 25,000 – 1992 (because 249 * 8 unique tokens) = 23,008.

If you do happen to use all your character slots, then you can use one of the characters you don’t use to store, and if that’s too much of a hassle (because you’re hopping that often) then you’re either SoL (because you’re too busy whining) or you can just spend 600 gems to gain inventory for 7,500 collectibles, or the 800 gems to gain inventory for up to 25,000 collectibles.

Note: the 25,000 collectibles is counting 20 slot bags, which cost a little over 10g each.

You should be fine. On Wednesday, a large patch will be going through that will make Condition Damage mesmers more viable (through the Chaos tree).

I would suggest taking the new Bountiful Interruption (instead of the new Chaotic Interruption) along with Staff Trait. This will allow you to use Chaos Storm more often and will easily grant you massive amounts of Might stacks (if the leaked patch notes are correct). That will boost your Condition Damage and Power, which will then lend a hand in using your iWarlock and autoattacks in dealing damage.

Most of the rewards cost more than 250. When they updated the deposit tab, they also made certain tokens gain a grayed out “Deposit Collectible” this includes, but is not limited to, WvW Tokens (Badges of Honor) and Dungeon Tokens. This implies that there is the possibility of a deposit tab coming for them, but how it will work will be intriguing. Namely, the problem I see with a deposit tab is people complaining about how it only collects 250, but most items cost 300+ (there are certain items that cost 180, 210 and a few other numbers below 250).

Just some food for thought.

Cooking is very profitable. You must do a lot of research beforehand, but once you have finished researching, you can easily stockpile materials until you can craft a decent portion of them, then sell them for profit. Again, you must do your research beforehand to find out what is profitable and what isn’t, and also finding profit margins. There are many recipes which I’ve thought about doing, but have less than a 0.5% return, offering mere coppers for the price of golds (and not even guaranteed).

Remember, any sale you try to make is not guaranteed, so don’t go all in when profiting off of anything. It’s better to spread around your resources. If I could gurantee I make 10c off of a sale that that’s 50s, then I would use that in addition to my other sources of income, I wouldn’t rely on that as my only source of income.

Ok, but, i don’t know anything about eocnomy and all this stuff, also, i don’t wanna read about economy/market/ all this Wallstreet stuff, i just wanna play the game. Do i need to understand economy to make a profit in the TP?

No, you just need to research your own specific recipes.

Aka: I find something that sells for 10s.

The total ingredients cost anywhere from 6-12s depending on which ones I buy, and which ones I skip (and buy what THEY become). From there, if I properly purchase, it’ll be 6s to make 10s, but then I have to apply the 15% trading post tax, which makes the projected outcome of 10s become 8.5s, so I make 2.5s per sale.

Esplen.3940

Since this topic is already opened, I’ll ask here if you won’t mind: What about all these movement bonuses from elementalist’s traits? Do they stack with swiftness?

No they do not. Speed is always the highest value from any one source.

Example:
Thief with…
traited stealth speed (50%)
signet of shadows (
25%)
swiftness (+33%)

When signet of shadows is up, the thief will have 25% bonus speed.

When swiftness is up, signet of shadows will get overridden and the thief will have +33% bonus speed.

When the thief is stealthed, the thief will have +50% bonus speed, regardless of swiftness or signet of shadows being up/ready.

A few problems I see here: It would be a lot of time and energy on a-net part for a playerbase that will quickly get bored of the lack of engaging content. It would allow the market to be flooded with mats from instakills and a server like this would have an even bigger problem with bots who require minimal programing to gather. I doubt any money gained would offset the cost to maintain it.

It’s a lot of work for a very small playerbase is what Dust is trying to say, so I highly doubt it will be implemented in the near-future.

  • Firstly, what if I went to do a dungeon? I’m not getting downscaled, so I could easily clear AC by myself. This creates a balance issue. This server would be able to farm ridiculously easily compared to other servers. A fix for this would to, in response to getting rid of downleveling, also get rid of upscaling loots. Meaning, you kill a level 5 mob, you get a level 5 reward. The only dungeons that would be remotely profitable would be HotW, CoF, CoE and Arah. Not to mention the weaker dungeons would give less dungeon tokens to accommodate their ease for high level players. This leads me to my next point.
  • Secondly, what if I was hosting a dungeon and someone in another server joined me. Do they get downscaled? Do I get downscaled? This creates a diversion in the community. A possible fix for this is to create a separate network that would be “non-downscaled” but that means that if you want to be non-downscaled, you’d have to buy a transfer similar to EU <—> NA.
  • Thirdly, what is the point? I still don’t get it. You want to be able to one-shot mobs? I do that on my level 80 in beginner zones. I’m hitting mobs for a lot harder than beginners are capable. When I go to help my friends, they stand there hitting a mob for half a minute. I walk up to it, and with one auto attack bring it to near-dead. The way downscaling works is definitely flawed. It is possible to be weaker than someone at the current level, but it’s also possible to be stronger. Use that to your advantage, not your disadvantage.

RNG, not a fan

There will always be outlying people on a bell curve. That’s why it’s a bell. It’s standard statistics, especially when it comes to RNG. I don’t see what the problem is. You’ve worked and you haven’t gotten lucky.

You can’t say that you “deserve” one just because you’ve done a lot. Simply statistics, just because you’ve opened up 500 things that have a 1/500 chance of dropping an item doesn’t mean you’re going to get it. Each opening has a 1/500 chance of dropping it.

The actual probability of getting the item if it has 1/500 chance of dropping (0.02%) and you open 500, is ~63%.

The probability of getting an item with a 1/10 chance through 10 tries is ~65%.

Getting a precursor is a slightly modified loot table off of the exotics. First off, how many exotics have you looted off mobs/chests. From there, each of those has an equal chance of being ANY exotic (other than specific non-droppable exotics, like Final Rest or certain stats like Cavalier). There is an exception. Precursors have a modified loot table, as stated before, so getting one of those is slightly rarer.

This means that the probability of getting a precursor off your everyday mob or chest is ridiculously low, but it does happen since there are millions of players playing every day.

Save laurels?

The damage upgrade from one tier to the next is usually under 10%. With that being said, weapons give the most stats out of all your gear, but Ascended items have many, many methods of being obtained.

I don’t think it’s going to be that difficult to get ascended weapons when they do get released.

Use your laurels on what you want. If the ascended weapons come out, you will be able to get it via laurels, commendations, fractals, wvw, pve, dungeons, new content or something else. Note: None of this last sentence is confirmed.

Unless you post a full sequence of screenshots, bugged popup or not, then your screenshots are non-objective. Please post a full set from start to just before killing shot regardless of if you think the popups are bugged or not: if they are it is easy to see.

I also posted screenshots against the running Golem, there is no difference; so don’t give me the “Heavy Golems are stationary” thing.

And please post a series of screenshots showing you using the iSwordsman against the same Golem on the same build. Unless people also post comparisons to another Phantasm you can’t tell if the damage dealt is the result of a bug or just a weak build.

Seriously, it seems to me no one actually did a thorough, objective examination of this issue. I’m beginning to think it is just a fix (as some people have stated regarding whirling attacks in general) and people are angry because it isn’t OP anymore.

Of course that’s not completely fair, as I’m fairly certain there is a “bug” where the first strike misses far too often; which is a concern.

I’m quite sure they fixed it to what it was supposed to be (and never considered it a nerf or change because I don’t think they were even trying to fix it specifically when they did). This caused an uproar from the GS Mesmer community and it still hasn’t died down.

I personally believe it makes more sense than having level 1 mobs while you’re level 80. A sword is a sword, and by simply stabbing them, you will deal a decent amount of damage. It doesn’t matter if your sword is glowy or if it’s just a sword… It’s still going to stab them.

That’s a very conceited way of looking at it. The skill, in my personal opinion (as a mesmer) is that the skill is working as intended. If you can’t see past the fact that it’s as strong as the equivalent skills (minus not forcing you to use the animation), then that’s your loss.

I don’t see how downscaling will, by itself, make someone lose interest in a game.

Better story mode dungeon rewards

I think Story Mode should have a greater reward on the first completion, then have smaller, simpler rewards on completion after that. Other than for Dungeon Master and/or opening Explorable, Story Mode is useless, and it’s a waste of time. Not just that, but the story in it progresses at such an obscure rate (you have to be paying attention to the Divinity’s Edge to understand it in the first place), and then it just suddenly makes sense because they suddenly start working together.
