real men use S/D :P
i thought signet of malice is already the best overall heal and tons of thieves use it already?
for what? WvW or sPvP?
I play S/D in WvW.
S/D focuses on mobility so what you want to do is circle your opponent and not give them even a chance to target you. Spam flanking strike as fit to strip boons.
Profit.
It’s a valid strategy to bum rush into the opposing character and cause him to waste all his cooldowns and then shadow return out. In the case of an engineer, I’d wait until turrets expire and then burst you down.
Your fault for wasting all your cooldowns. And it’s your loss. Suck it!
Considering blowing all my cooldowns in that situation wasn’t enough I don’t think the end result would have been any better. Or do you have some mythical situation in which I could have outplayed the thief which wasn’t burst damage and didn’t involve the same result of running away?
Still, my build and cooldowns are all completely moot for the point at hand. The point had nothing to do with any of that and everything to do with what the thief could effectively escape with NO build investment and only 1 utility skill invested. Basically, the answer is the thief can escape anything without having to build for it.
I’m not saying there is anything you could’ve done to beat that thief, just saying it’s definately a valid strategy to do that when you’re a thief. I do it all the time.
Especially good against elementalist (cause them to waste their big moves), guardian (they have temporary invulnerability), necromancer (their plague form), engineer (sentry)…
Meh actually all classes have some sort of ultimate move that they rely on to survive a burst. It’s definately valid to retreat and then go in again since their ultimate is usually on a cooldown of something like 90s, sometimes 180s so that skill will still be on cooldown when you go in for round 2.
Knowing when to retreat separates the novice thieves from adept thieves since to know when to retreat you need to know which moves are particular deadly for each class.

We need long bow, dual katana and dual claws and shuriken
L2p retal is not hard to deal with at all. Just don’t attack the zerg and run away and you’ll be fine!!
I think if they change the passive signet of shadows from 25% to 33% that will be a nice boost to mobility.
S/D is not a weak movement set. It’s better than D/D and D/P for pure movement.
Nope the problem with D/P is DEFINATELY perma stealth and I can guarantee will be nerfed in the future. It’s basically a game breaking build.

However, mesmer burst isn’t very high at all.
…
Am I playing the same game as you?
All professions are good in something (or several like mesmer), please don’t start another QQ just because thieves are good roamers.
You are, but you practice selective reading and skipped the preceding sentence. In terms of PvE it isn’t as that what the point pertained to (read the discussion). The only thing comparable to BS thief is terms of DPS among mes builds is Phant with 3 swordsmen up. You should know these things if you intend to respond.
However, mesmer burst isn’t very high at all.
What the ..? lol
Same response as the guy above.
only thing op about thief is stealth (mainly the D/P set). the burst and mobility are fine.
ANET said they’re buffing our mobility in a future patch anyways.
I have no issues with thief burst and I stated that. However, I did ask if one class should have both that much stealth and that much mobility at the same time. Like I said this isn’t a kitten thread nor is it a nerf all thread. I personally think nerfing stealth is a no no. Too many builds rely on it atm and just like the last time they did it the results were undesirable. Evasion makes sense but I do not see a need for increased mobility.
TBF Anet has said many things in the past. Like DD ele needs more sustained, aoe should be toned down further, P/D thief should get an extra condition etc. They say things in SoTGs but often that doesn’t mean it is going to happen.
Are you kidding me? If anything needs a nerf, it’s stealth. D/P perma stealth is ridiculous. Trust me , if a nerf happens it will be on D/P set – no longer possible to perma stealth. Mobility and burst is fine. If anything, mobility will be buffed for sword as promised.

Yes, there are things a single person can do.
Thief isn’t op though. Really it’s UP in PvE and that’s easily half the game. The only thing it’s good at is roaming and I mean, a class has to be good at at least 1 thing….
Actually stealth has very little counters. I’m a thief main since day 1 and most of the counters people speak about have counters too.
Like timing 1.2.3. roll…?? Seriously? Wow the thief only has to wait until you waste the roll then spam the back stab on you.
You don’t deal with it. It’s OP.
I’m ripping my hair out with my engie’s zerker build trying to get through all the stacked defenses of a Guardian with the additionnal use of ridiculous amounts of hard CC and vulnerability stacks and you’re telling me that you die to a couple of flanking strikes, a backstab and some heartseekers? >.>
HOW is that possible, tell meeeeeeeeee!
In a couple of seconds you strip all their boons, and you get all their boons. Then you lay the smack down.
I love spamming FS on a guardian. Always makes them run.
0 in CS sounds pretty bad to me.
I transferred from SoR to SoS this past week. I can say there is no question in my mind that SoR would simply demolish any one of these 3 servers. Their massive 24×7 forces, widespread use of community TS, and excellent commanding at all times is pretty phenomenal. Ohhh and did I mention their massive forces? I haven’t seen an equivalent to IRON, TW here. There would be many good fights, but at the end of the week the points wouldn’t be that close, but who really cares about points anyways. At some point the new matchup system will likely make this all happen and prove my predictions all wrong.
SoR is just scary good.
why did you transfer though if SoR is that good?
Now that I’ve woken up again, that fight last night in SMC (TC vs FA) was AMAZING. It was what, 50 minutes of solid fighting? So much fun
, so much wxp
, so many loot bags despawned
.
Would be better without the skill lag but it was definately a lot of fun!
Assuming thief is your main that is.
For me, intially I wanted to roll an elementalist since I played an SF ele solo capper in guild wars 1. So obviously I wanted to play an elementalist in the sequel too.
In the beginning levels, I found elementalist really boring and underwhelming so I thought a thief would be a good substitute for the level of mobility and solo action I could reasonably expect for a solo capper. (turns out the D/D ele is a good solo capper too, but that evolved over time as in the beginning ele was considered one of the worst classes)
I’m not let down. The initiative system alone makes it worth it. Thief is great at getting away and having unparalleled mobility which makes the class what it is. It is great for solo capping since you can roam around without too much worry and also gank on unsuspecting people. Only thing I hate is the overly reliance on the stealth cheese. I hope ANET gives us more “assassin” like builds that don’t rely on stealth to make it work.
Can’t wait to put the smackdown on Sanctum of Fail
Wow nice fight in SMC just now. Was a ton of fun and lots of profit!
Ya I hate fighting thieves and I’m a thief.
yes shadow return cooldown is like 50s for the utility, effectively 15 seconds for the weapon skill. hide in shadow 30s.
In this thread:
“Your class has X. X is really cool, especially because my class doesn’t have it. Since I am not considering that I have Y and your class doesn’t, X looks OP. I think this is unfair!?
Nice summary bro.
I’m an S/D thief but it does seem unreasonable to have to dodge an attack that can be so easily spammed.
I’m not saying S/D is OP, actually it is UP compared to D/P, but I call it like it is.
Ya it was overbuffed they can take me down pretty easily on my hgh engy they literally spam it 4x and im down to 30% health and all my might stacks are gone then they stealth and wait for initiative or use the shadow step skill. I play hgh engi they shred me apart
It also has a low skill ceiling. The problem with theives is if it’s a bad theif they will still be good because they can stealth or use their ridiculous teleports making them unkillable pretty much
how do you know they are a bad thief?
i can’t even beat other thieves and i’m a thief
realistically most people in WvW can’t break me out of the field. i think it’s something like 1/10 times when i would get pulled out of the SR field.
no stealth is balanced.
wow really, i didn’t know that.
Obviously, those who are saying that this is a “bug fix” have not played GW1 at all and have no idea what they are talking about.
THIS IS NOT A BUG FIX!
That’s all I have to say about that.
Obviously anyone who sees this as anything more than a bug fix don’t know how to read. The skill CLEARLY stated it only had a 1,200 range (lol, “only”).
If you cannot justify why this is a bug, then it is not a bug.
If you think it is a broken skill because it’s too powerful, then say it as it is and not call it a bug.
It is insulting when their intention is to nerf it but hiding behind the pretense of a bug by calling it a bug. Don’t hide under the pretense that it is a bug, it only makes you dishonest.
Just call it as it is.
It is a NERF!
A bug fix is when Anet finds the time to fix our auto-attack timing — now that’s a bug fix worth praising.
And it would be a buff when that happens. Call a spade a spade…
There was one but it got completely destroyed today.
I guess ANET wants every thief to be a back stabbing thief that abuses stealth.
shadow return is worse than useless now
It really isn’t worth the initiative to use anymore. It usually hurts you more then helps you.
How so?
It’s ridiculous.
WvW players have plenty of badges and karma. The thing we don’t have at all is laurels, and they make it cost tons of laurels!
Why can’t they just make it behave at least like shadow step?
Costs way to much laurels for ascended. Ideally you wouldn’t tie laurels with WvW ascended at all.
The player base has spoken, we do not want ascended items to be earned with laurels.
Yes it is a nerf. It’s a HUGE nerf.
Meh, thieves get nerfed every patch. This one was no exception…
Thieves are not the best 1v1 chars.
Any serious WvW soloer knows this.
Ya thief is one of the worst at high level PvP.
Now only ports you back 1200 range instead of infinite range.
Thiefs are terrible in PvE and tPvP. They need a buff if anything.
And..??
That’s the only thing they can do. Roaming is pretty pointless…
Roaming isn’t pointless at all. If you think it is pointless, you aren’t doing it properly.
-Kill Dolyaks
-Follow zergs
-Delay reinforcements to a siege
-Provide invaluable information to your server.Edit: Obviously it is less influential than a 50-man zerg. But that’s 50 people, and the roamer is just one person.
What’s the point of following zergs..?
There is no way you can delay reinforcements if you’re just by yourself.
I guess scouting is okay, but that is pretty boring….
Just roll with the zerg if you don’t think you can win a duel with a thief that abuses stealth.
Not all builds are supposed to be good at 1v1.
There is no non-Thief build that is better at roaming than a Thief. Nobody can disengage like a Thief can.
And..??

A thief with nerfed stealth is just a free kill in WvW.
