My only beef with thieves is that they have the best mobility and stealth. If their mobility was toned down a bit that would be better.
Horrible suggestion. ANET already said thiefs’ mobility will be buffed.
There are two types of Thieves.
The Troll:
The Average Thief:
I’ve met thieves that are not in those categories. Thieves that could take on 4 players (not uplevelled noobs), they could be uncatchable and took their opponents down 1by1. If you didin’t come across one, good for you.
You’re pretty bad if you let those thieves take you down 1 by 1. Definately a l2p issue here.
But if you nerf larsenous strike then every single thief will be forced to abuse stealth just to stay alive. As is, larsenous strike is the only move that lets thief kill without relying on stealth.
If larc strike stole 1 boon it would still be good without being able to completely shut down any boon-oriented build. There should not be a single skill that makes entire builds worthless. I can agree they need to give thieves more viable options other than stealth, but that doesn’t mean larc strike isn’t a bit out of hand atm.
Well they could buff us first, then nerf instead of nerfing and then never buffing….
The main problem with the thief class is that it is simply not enjoyable to fight against an enemy who can vanish, teleport, run away and reset fights at will. They aren’t necessarily OP so much as a constant annoyance that detracts from fun. Larcenous strike is really the only thing about thieves that is blatantly overpowered imo.

8 out of 10 1v1 fights i have are against stealhtspam thieves.
Most 1vs2 i have are against 2 thives at once.
So either this game is unbalanced or its just not fun.I know ~6 people in real live that stopped playing months ago because of this.
Im close to it because im forced to run specific builds and specifig gear just to counter 1 single class. Against every other professions its skill that decides the outcome of the battle. Against this one its gear and build.
Why not just leave roaming to the roaming specialists aka thieves, and do the thing your professions is good at, for example zerging and group play?
Really anyone who loses to a thief 1v1 just need to L2P.

Thief is one of the worst professions in the game. Some might even say they’re useless.

Honestly I have no idea how much SoR is holding back on us, cuz we’re doing a lot better than the last time we faced them.
I have question, how can you tell that you are doing a lot better than last time knowing that SoR is holding back ?
The score now is no different than the average of our previous matchups even if we holding back.
If you are asking, I would say that TC has grown about as much as SoR since last time we met.
All this has no relevance, most importantly while we here is that we enjoy the game and we are having fun together.
Because when I logged on during our previous match up, there’s a 50% chance we wouldn’t even have our Keep on EB.

4 on x/D is actually really good…it’s just that you only want to use it for cripple.
Nothing wrong with a ranged spammable cripple.
Sorry the init cost makes this skill worthless almost.

Thief because even when the zerg gets slaughtered you can still usually get away.
LS is a really good skill I agree, but S/D needs this skill to be even relevant. You could nerf LS but then you definately would have to buff the auto attack.
It’s not a nerf, it’s a bug fix. It wasn’t meant to change elevation and avoid obstacles.
Now that said, I would argue that all of the shortbow’s skills should be 1200 so the effective range of 5 in particular wasn’t awful.
Can you link the dev post that says teleports arent meant to change elevation or avoid obstacles? (portal says hi)
And every other skill other than Mesmer portal says hi back…
So either portal is bugged, or all other ports are. Still not seeing a dev post saying teleport should be restricted against elevation and obstacles
Mesmer Portal is mechanically different. the others aren’t. I’m sure they all use the same exact snippet of code.
Either mesmer portal can be changed to use the exact same snippet of code. Or shadow steps can be reworked to use the same snippe of code that mesmer portal uses.
But mesmer portal says hello there!
Infiltrator’s arrow/Shadow Step no longer takes you to where you want. It gets stuck on the tiniest elevation change or obstacle now…
That officially makes it useless as a movement ability =/

condition damage is pretty gimp, especially for a thief.

Yes that mesmer and elementalist both seem to be pretty bad.
same weapon setup as me. S/D and shortbow and non stealth is very nice gameplay style.
unfortunately, I’m not that skilled. I spam FS and that works as well. hehe
I made the same topic on the mesmer forum. There are some nice tips there, I guess.
But I digress, it’s pretty much impossible as S/D imo.
I guess D/P has a bad name associated to it since all the perma stealth trolls use it but it does have a lot going for it.
Anyways, I loved S/D ever since first using it and it’s just a ton of fun killing anyone at roughly the same speed regardless if they’re bunker or not.

Thief is not OP In WvW. Most guilds want guardian, mesmer, warrior, elementalist only. Thief is low tier.
so even though you kill 99% of thiefs, they’re OP?
looks like the balance is pretty good.
it’s because you’re in full berserker armor. i’ve never been instagibbed, not even by another thief. (noone really runs basilisk venom full glass cannon D/D burst anymore)

Really fun reset night so far. We were struggling a bit on SoS BL. SoR was just everywhere but EB is just loot bags galore. Tons of fun.

Does it also apply when they’re in downed state?
In the downed state the real Mesmer has a big, red arrow over their head.
Often times you’re better off just bursting the Mesmer down rather than trying to stomp.
Clones don’t have red arrow over their head?
clones dont have offhand weapon, only real mesmer have food, only real mesmer can dodge
- Recently I’ve noticed opposing clones don’t have a guild tag
- Movement gives away a Mesmer quickly
- Look for dodges, strafing, moving side-to-side, etc
- Ranged clones are stationary unless you move too far away
- Look at the buffs
- If you’re in a group, mark the real Mesmer
- If the Mesmer stealths, look for them a few seconds later
- Only the real Mesmer can cast spells. Clones only auto-attack
I guess I haven’t been paying attention but I find it hard to believe clones don’t have guild tags.
Considering that almost everyone is in a guild, that seems to me like a dead giveaway most of the time!

S/D and shortbow. Traits: 30/30/5/5/0. Utilities: infiltrator’s signet, Signet of Shadow, shadow refuge. 3200 power, 40% crit, 65% crit damage, 17k HP 2500 armor
Only thing I have no problem with is running away from the mesmer after I fail to kill him.

When you’re a thief? What are things you need to watch out for/do in order to stand a chance?
nah more like we don’t want to get accustomed to something that is about to get nerfed. like you said, everything besides D/P is nerfed, what makes you think D/P is not next?
