Thieves, actually.

With thieves aside…

Probably rangers, but I think this is because rangers must be played by bad players. I actually deal with thieves well on my own ranger. I can’t kill them, but they can’t kill me. Whereas when I’m on my thief they tend to die very quickly.

Elementalists, generally, if I get the drop on them. If they get the drop on me I tend to shadowstep for a few quick hits, and based on how fast they drop, I’ll finish them or run.

Anything else I wouldn’t necessarily classify as ‘easy’. Not difficult, necessarily, but not easy.

Annoying Sound Bug

Ezekiel.1985

I used to have this problem on my old rig – I moved a few months ago and it was damaged, and I’ve replaced it.

From old threads I seem to recall that this is actually a repeatable bug. A poster was able to reproduce it consistently. And it happens when stuff basically comes in processing range of your avatar. If it’s mid-sound, it’ll do this.

I don’t know why, but on the new rig it hasn’t done this to me at all. There may be a common factor in common builds (mine new one is pretty top-end) that is causing it.

Warrior axe spin is on a cooldown and is controllable/manageable because of this.

Thief axe spin mandates that a warrior-type be pickpocketed, and is subject to some variety even then, and is thus not inherently reliable.

Think of it like your burst skill. Do you feel that your burst skill should be less useful than or equally useful/powerful as your basic weapon skills?

(hint: no, they shouldn’t. Argument can be made I suppose whether they actually are or not, but point stands that they should not be.)

lieu·ten·ant (l-tnnt)
n.
1.
a. Abbr. LT or Lt. A commissioned rank in the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard that is above lieutenant junior grade and below lieutenant commander.
b. A first lieutenant.
c. A second lieutenant.
d. One who holds the rank of lieutenant, first lieutenant, or second lieutenant.
2. (lf-tnnt) A commissioned officer in the British and Canadian navies ranking just below a lieutenant commander.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lieutenant

“Historically the “lieutenant” was the deputy to a “captain”, and as the rank structure of armies began to formalise, this came to mean that a captain commanded a company and had several lieutenants, each commanding a platoon."

Commanders have their own ideas, but are frequently given plans and ideas by their lieutenants. That’s how ranks work.

LA is one of the areas that currently will not play your custom playlists, because it is currently using Halloween songs instead. When Halloween is gone, it should resume playing your custom lists (and because it’s LA, it should use Ambient/NightTime, mostly, and not City.)

Edited to note – usually “seasonal” events with music recorded specifically for them will override your custom music. See: Halloween and Wintersday. This usually includes their related zones, as well. See: Wintersday jumping puzzle zone, of which I forgot the name.

This doesn’t ALWAYS happen, though. For example. Zephyr Sanctum had music unique to it, but it would play Ambient instead if you had that playlist in your music folder. But in the past, Halloween and Wintersday have played over custom lists.

Ezekiel.1985

Yeah, some of the achievements are reasonable but I feel that at least half of them are ridiculous. Especially supply killer, guard killer, leveler, ruins, defense restoration, and sentries.

Castles is a little over the top mainly because of how the balance of WVW is at the moment. Outside of the top tier, it’s often one server dominating everything. I would maybe lower this to 1-3.

oh. mercs too. Omg that one is ridiculous.

Basically you should be able to get this achievement from WVWing for a fair chunk of time over the season. Not have to spend A TON OF TIME going out of your way to do things that are either useless or not fun, meet the arbitrary number.

Mask of the Night unique?

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: Ezekiel.1985

Ezekiel.1985

While in some ways it’s similar to masks already present, it seems culturally distinctly different to me, to be honest. To me, it’s more close to a mask someone might actually wear IRL, or at least during the Rennaissance. Most of the other masks (even the masquerade looking ones) don’t look to me like masks people would actually wear even to a masquerade ball.

That’s not to say the others look crappy, just that they’re…I dunno…Both unique and very over the top, usually? They’re neat but I’m a fan of subtlety and do actually like the new mask, whereas I don’t really like the others.

As others have mentioned, it is a very different sort of game from other games in the MMORPG world. The only “kind of” big one (using that term loosely) one that uses similar mechanics really is Tera, and you’re less likely to have played that than say, WOW, EQ, TOR, Aion etc

It takes some adjustment, and every class plays differently, and some are much more survivable in what I would call “default” MMORPG conditions – those classes are primarily guardian and warrior – more so guardian, though.

But for example, elementalists were mentioned – I don’t have an 80 elementalist, but I found that if I started to struggle with a train of 4-6ish, I could survive and pull off amazing combats by timing my dodges, using ALL my abilities meaning swapping between all four attunements, and again timing my dodging most often for whenever I was waiting on a brief recovery timer…I could survive.

I didn’t die very much, but I will admit it was harder to survive – but I could pull off some still very impressive stuff, just that it was easier on Warrior/Guardian.

Thief would similarly have to be fairly mobile, and you’ll have to plan your attacks more accordingly.

Have you tried necromancer? they’re fairly easy-going compared to other classes as well in the way of leveling up/solo and such as well. I think you’ll find if you swap back and forth between an easy class and a more challenging one, you’ll pick up on patterns and ways of better self-preservation on your less soloable class.

Umm is there a solution for mac though? I tried everything like Ezekiel did and also exporting my playlist again directly to the music folder but it still won’t work.

All I can offer is: Find out where your screenshots are stored, and put the playlists in the same folder as that folder as in.

Example if your screenshots are stored in BDSMdungeon/GW2/Screenshots you will put your playlists in BDSMdungeon/GW2/ and not within the screenshot directory. Should work then, but I honestly can’t speak for mac.

I seem to get hit and miss results. The default music for LA/Ambient seems to play a lot randomly, even though it is nowhere in my playlist. I know during the festival that the Halloween music may over right my custom playlist, but this was happening before that.

I use the GW1 sound tracks with a bunch of sorting into categories, so it isn’t always immediately apparent it is working incorrectly unless I toss a random pop song into the playlist.

I’ve added some details (granted this was awhile ago) about some playlist functionality to the GW2 wiki, but I’ll sum it up a bit:

Cities do not always use your city playlist. IT depends on the city. DR for example, will use “City” almost everywhere. Lion’s Arch uses Ambient almost everywhere, probably because it feels kind of outdoorsy and adventurey. Hoelbrak is mostly Ambient, excepting the trader area and maybe some others (I don’t spent much time in Hoelbrak). The grove I think is literally Ambient everywhere. Black Citadel in my experience is about half City, half Ambient.

If you are in a non-city zone, and in an open zone (example: Queensdale, Cursed Shore), it will play your Ambient list, unless it’s nighttime, in which case it will play your NightTime list. If you don’t have a NightTime list, it will continue to play ambient.

Some cut scenes and areas (most of these areas are in dungeons or PS instances) will have specific soundtracks they always play regardless of your playlists. Citadel of Flame, for example, always plays that default drum song, only switching to Battle when in combat, and BossBattle for the final bosses (or at least the P1 boss, haven’t really paid attention to music consistency with the other bosses as those paths require more focus).

Another example, the final personal story instance always plays Fear Not This Night. Unless you have your music off altogether of course.

(even then, sometimes a song will slip through)

But yeah, if you’re one of those classical COF farmers (no insult, just noting that many people do a lot of COF farming hehe), you will be among a crowd of people that notices your ambient list never works while in the dungeon.

But I think the whole dark hair/short mohawk/eyeliner thing is kinda generic, to be totally honest with you. Not that that makes the character lame or anything (by all means if anybody feels it does, they’re not wrong for it), just that it’s kind of a generic look. Like Canthans looking Asian, or in other games when djinns wear turbans and poofy pants with no shirt but usually a vest.

Well hell! I started playing around with directories the other day, I TOTALLY forgot to update this, but yeah. Kudos, Chellae! Though I’d found it, I forgot to post. I started screwing around with stuff and basically putting MainMenu.wpl into every directory that seemed relevant. First in the root GW2 file directory, then in music (as per usual). Even put one in Music/Music just to be absolutely sure. Eventually it occurred to me that since getting my new PC, the screenshot directory changed, so I put it in the folder with the screenshots and bam.

I’ll try this out as I understand it. That kind of makes sense with how some of the other audio stuff works – for example, I don’t know if you guys were aware of this, but “compressed” music files do not play in GW2. I discovered this when I noticed (while I was still using XP) it wouldn’t play music files whose names were in blue (IE, compressed). Copying said files and simply re-pasting them resolved the issue.

Anyway, gonna try this save thing out.

Full zerk+Scholar with 30/10/0/0/30 trait and precision foods. Rifle+Axe/Shield(5% dmg on all). This is a troll build, it won’t really work that well on a lot of occasion, but landing those high crit damage using killshot on opponent that does not suspect it feels good. Even if he did, just timed your shield bash and evis the kitten out of him. You will most definitely die fast though.

Pretty much what he said – mainly the bit about killshot. I find that the rifle in general is not terribly useful, but killshot hits hilariously hard sometimes. And I grin every time I down someone with it (which isn’t often, cause I don’t use rifle much anymore)

In a general sense, I wouldn’t say that any class is straight superior to the other overall. It just depends on what you want to do. As an example – between the two, I would prefer to take warrior to WVW, primarily due to their superior ranged abilities (people really really underestimate warrior ranged damage if you know what you’re doing!). When it comes to groups? Guardian wins there – they just bring so much more to the table and are extremely adaptable. Even within one build (my build focuses on personal defense, group defense, and crits) I can trade off between improved group damage, projectile counters, and overall healing/survivability by changing my weapons and my utility skills.

Hope this was helpful. There’s more to it, but I’m trying to keep it relatively short.

Ezekiel.1985

What I would really like to see is some objective person roll level 80 for each profession and give some rank of how the professions stack against each other. I get that warrior is better than Guardian. What else?

I have an 80 of both classes.

Warrior:
-More damage.
-More mobility.
-Better able to adapt to ranged fights.
-Far superior ranged abilities.

Guardian:
-More defense.
-Overall greater survivability.
-More ways to counter attacks.
-Far superior group utility. Hands down. It’s not even close.

Notes:

Guardian has more protection against ranged attacks, but few ways to counter it, so warrior wins when it comes to ranged adaptability. The guardian “counter” is for him to throw up his ranged protection and then one of two things happens: his group kills whatever, or he himself closes the distance and hopefully doesn’t take too long doing so. Guardian is as a turtle. Warrior is as a guy who bobs and weaves at higher risk til he reaches his target and kills it. Or simply uses his limited defense to last through the volley, and returns a powerful volley of his own that is frequently underestimated. I guess you could sum it up as: guardian protects, warrior adapts and counters. In a group: guardian is the one that shields everyone. Warrior is the one that lives either way and doles out the punishment.

Warrior has counters but is somewhat a one-trick-pony in comparison to guardian. As a note, this refers to adaptability, not quantity – warrior technically has -more- counters, they just work extremely similarly and are more often single target. The guardian can also respond to a greater variety of complications. Detriments, DOTs, incoming damage, even enemy movement. Whereas the warrior counters are more literal mechanical counters and mostly amount to short-burst protection followed by “JUST KILL IT WITH DAMAGE!”

Warrior has more stuns, knockdowns, ETC. However, something to keep in mind is that these abilities are often referred to as “crowd control”. But I will tell you right now that while warrior has more stuns, knockdowns, etc, the guardian most definitely has a greater ability to control crowds. (see: staff, hammer.)

Warrior has “okay” survivability. One thing to keep in mind is that they are in the top tier for base health, alongside necromancer. The reason for this is that without a lot of health, they’re honestly very weak. If they were in the middle tier they’d be pretty weak. If they were in the bottom, they’d be completely shredded. But they DO have the ability to adapt in a pinch – in that they have short duration long cooldown abilities to stem the incoming damage and potentially turn the tide of a fight against an unwary opponent. Elite banner can work in a similar manner to turn fights around.

Warrior does have some group utility, but with the exception of the elite banner, they’re basically crappy/less controlled versions of guardian boons. All they “really” bring to a group is damage and the elite banner. The rest is just noticeably inferior versions of guardian stuff. And there’s a lot of terrible warriors who don’t even run the elite banner in groups. (note: I don’t use banners in groups usually, but ALWAYS ALWAYS use the elite banner).

Guardians are in THE LOWEST health tier. Alongside thief and elementalist. Despite this, they have the greatest survivability of all classes due to ample access to protection, healing in general, regens, blocks, etc etc etc. They also don’t honestly have ANY weak healing skills – even the SIGNET heal is powerful, which is an oddity among GW2 signets.

Guardian utilities are far superior to warriors in general. You can massively empower a group depending on your build and loadout. Guardians can massively improve group survivability through protection and regeneration and blocks. They can massively improve group damage as well from multiple sources – the biggest of which is the staff #4 buff. Pair that with a mesmer to double it up and the group becomes monstrous. There’s also more specific things like: access to multiple ways to block projectiles for the group (in my group support build, I can have three AE projectile blocks ready to go), line of warding to control adds so as to keep the group alive or simply concentrate fire…there’s just a lot. Way more than warrior. There’s the reason the warrior section is shorter.

I personally feel that the warrior elite banner is superior in a general sense to any of the guardian elite skills.

Sylvari, the Lost Desciples of Mordremoth?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Ezekiel.1985

Ezekiel.1985

Gotta ask:
1) Is there any reason why we couldn’t believe that the Sylvari are Mordremoth’s champion’s minions (not cleansed)? Do they have to be crazy? I mean, the undead, yeah, mindless zombies. Fire dragon? Yeah, raging crazies. Crystal dragon? Dominance, confusion, mind control. Why wouldn’t the “life” dragon be different? I have read that the dragon’s don’t get along, maybe Mordremoth is trying a different strategy? He wouldn’t really care that the Sylvari are killing the other dragons. We may have a huge disaster on our hands (I’m assuming that some of the Sylvari will resist when he awakes )
2) Well known and established parallel between the dragons and the gods. Perhaps they’re afraid/forced out because of the dragons? Now that Zihtan is dead, perhaps Kormir can make an appearance?

Yes, there is a reason. Because what we know of dragons, at present is
1. They are all evil.
2. They “gain” minions via corrupting them, not “making” them.

So while the whole dragon thing is a “cool conspiracy theory”, it doesn’t fit in with the current lore. It just doesn’t. For them to be dragon minions, two things which fly in the face of all we know about dragons and their minions and corruption would have to be true.

1. There is a superhero dragon that is benevolent.
2. Superhero dragon can make minions, he doesn’t corrupt them.

I think that’s just way too much of a jump to make, again because it goes against EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT THEM RIGHT NOW.

Do I think these coincidences are all inter-related? Definitely. But to think that a dragon is the answer is too big of a leap to make. One shouldn’t theorize before having sufficient data – because inevitably, it leads to twisting facts to suit theories, rather than theories to suit facts.

Sylvari skin; tough as oak or soft as flower?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Ezekiel.1985

Ezekiel.1985

My understanding has always been that it varies from sylvari to sylvari. It can be viney/fleshy, flowery, or harder like bark.

I’ve generally always had a distaste, honestly, for calling it “bark”. Bark is not flexible enough to accommodate limbs that can freely move and bend. And it has to be at least somewhat fleshy, because having joints pretty much mandates the ability for at least minor stretching of whatever the top layer of “skin” is, or it will simply tear.

Anyway, I keep an open mind of how people see their own characters, but my general interpretation is that, again, it varies, and can be from a wide range of different “skin” types.

This is Genuinely Upsetting

in Thief

Posted by: Ezekiel.1985

Probably the reason for this is most thieves are either bad players (and it shows on thief more than other classes, believe me) or they are selfish players. They either don’t really understand the strengths/weaknesses of the class, and DEFINITELY don’t know how to adapt (thieves have some of the greatest adaptability in the game)…or they are 100% about damage and absolutely nothing else (see: signet-only heavies, though even so they still have more utility).

A good thief makes ample use of smoke screen, stealth reviving, and knows how to get in/out of the fray when it comes to damage, and can end up being a very tough fighter against a boss.

No, the problem happens if she actually uses her AEs. Aside from that, you need to actually have some defensive players in your group. For example, when I was on my thief, who is balanced stat wise, in a full berserker group, they got completely rolled.

When I was in a group with two guardians, it was easy peasy.

For the record though, I don’t really support fighting her this way and feel that it requires a specific group type, and I don’t like playing like that. I prefer just fighting her normally.
