This is stupid. Why would you ban/temp ban people for doing that? They legitimately use the game mechanics.

What is legitimate about having a clicker 3rd party program heal you periodically? IIRC, that’s what they are doing here.

I would believe that even if they use the game mechanics legitimately, they are using them in an unintended fashion.

No 3rd party program required to set your heal skill to be automatically used constantly, it’s been in the game since the beginning.

This is reflected in the blue animation also landing behind you.

It’s a bug that was never fixed when they extended the range of the leap from 600-800 during beta, just disorganized skill updating methods =/

In PvP the armor you buy is not usable in any other environment other than PvP. Also its limited in that infusions , can’t be added to any armor, weapon or accessorys.Allowing ascended gear and weapons to be openly purchased in WvW would make the specialized system of crafting and the collection of materials completely pointless game wide, destroying an important aspect of the game. By presetting armor and weapon limits exclusive to WvW like that in PvP would destroy the vibrancy and variety currently available in WvW.The game would become stagnant .Even if they did have separate WvW armor and weapons would be a programmers nightmare based on the current mechanics of the game.

You ran numbers based upon? People standing still on point?

The 3.25s cast time and huge animation means people gtfo before they’ve been hit by more than 3/10 hits.

Irrelevant. Pve doesn’t have that problem and we are calculating dps, not combat scenarios. That been said, even in competitive modes, you are not rooted, so follow them. If they dash/shadowstep away, melee autos are not any better in that regard.

Being interrupted is a much more realistic issue, otherwise, you are arguing this one skill is threatening enough that you can force people off-point, in which case, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Not irrelevant.

This is the heart of the issue with this game’s balance.

When it is balanced around players like yourself and static PvE encounters which offer little challenge beyond memorising a DPS chain.

Vs the other two PvP games modes which are far more fluid, unpredictable and movement based.

Torch 5 still useless?

Ezrael.6859

Do you mind elaborating in a power build how torch 5 outdps scepter AA?

I took the raw damage numbers of all weapons and their cast-times to create raw dps numbers. Then I used arbitrary numbers for stats (1k, 2k, 3k Power, 0 Condi Damage, 750, 1200, etc) and enemies (1, 3, 5) and averaged the damage out over a fight. That pit just the weapons alone against each other. Everything else either affects them all the same (and therefore is a wash), or it affects things unfairly (like RHS) and wouldn’t be a comparison of just the weapons. I did however apply Permeating Wrath only, because aoe burn application was a variable I wanted to test, particularly Sword AA vs Torch 5.

Builds might definitely change some results, but not everyone can be expected to run the same build.

It is still a bad skill.

Torch is our only off-hand that is all offensive, but it’s offense is severely lacking.
It should offer some serious damage for going all offense vs the utility, damage and defense offered by Focus and Shield.

3.25 seconds to channel the damage still results in less damage than any of the 1H auto-attack chains.

Change it to be more like Elementalist’s Drake’s Breath – 2.25s cast time, same damage but over 4 hits.
Add 4 stacks of Burning for 2s.

Guardians are a heavy armour class with the least mobility in the game.

They have few teleports, no evasion utility or weapon skills and little to no access to Vigor.

They are built around area control and holding ground through all of their weapons, traits and utilities. That is the class concept.

What exactly do you expect in a fight with them you complete oaf?

Guardians are designed to be immobile and control an area, they are not a light footed evasion class like a Thief.

You want brainless? How about a 1200 range teleport that automatically puts you behind your target in stealth to perform what would be a skill based attack in any other RPG.

Symbol boon durations

in Guardian

Posted by: Ezrael.6859

Ezrael.6859

Symbols currently apply their boons in very small doses, typically around 1s per pulse.

We already know this has issues due to the active nature of combat and the fact that neither allies nor enemies tend to stand in the symbols

But the main thing is that the game has changed and become far more generous with boon application; in duration, in quantity, in frequency and in AoE application ability.

So: Symbols should apply the boons as full duration on the first pulse.
No more multiple pulse stacking.

Faith – 5s Regeneration
Punishment – 5s Might x5
Blades – 8.75s Fury

Protection – 3s Protection
Wrath – 5s Retaliation
Energy – 12s Vigor
Swiftness – 20s Swiftness

Writ of Persistence could be mildly buffed to simply add 20% boon duration.
Though I realise that this change would benefit all except Hammer as the +2 pulses is currently a +66% boon duration buff for Symbol of Protection, perhaps a special case needs to be applied to this with the trait.

You can attack from behind or the sides.
Use unblockable skills or AoE attacks.

Signet of Might hard counters it.

Or just do the same as you do against Endure Pain, disengage and stay away during the duration instead of trying to face-tank and mash buttons.

All classes are balanced in this game, unless you face-tank damage and mash buttons, but unfortunately the people that play like that only have the intellectual capacity to play like that. Then whine on the forums.

So the forums are full of whining bad players, and the players with patience, dodge keys, knowledge and the ability to use skills situationally are just playing the game and enjoying it.

There has been 8 months before July 26th when people didn’t want to play them, or others didn’t want you to play one.

spoiler: literally every single decent/half good guardian do not use the elite trap.

I’ve seen 90% of diamond guardians run elite traps. They sit on a point and use traps, mostly avoid condi reapers and that’s it. Actually, the ones that use the meditation elite are usually the ones that are the easiest to kill, since they have very little counter-pressure to enemies, as the elite trap cc is one of the best thing trapper has to offer.

I’m sorry but this accusation of yours may be true in lower tier pvp but far from truth when it comes to competitive play.

Those Guardians grinded their way to Diamond, praying they’ll get a good team that can win over 1 or 2 nodes while they try “camping”.. something that Rangers do twice better in.

Necros don’t counter DH.. can out play us, sure, but definitely a 50/50 match for us. Those who can’t beat them are probably trap Guards.

Lastly, Trap Elite is not at all “counter pressure”. Counter pressure are instant burst skills like Smite Condition+ToF+Hydromancy, used immediately when some one pressures us. Maw has a cast time, making it very inefficient against 2 or more classes who focus burst+cc. Thieves alone can stun you from 100-0 health if you have no cds making Maw, again, an inefficient skill to use.

And Renewed Focus can’t be used when stunlocked by a Thief, so you’d still die in your scenario. Good job!

When traited (Soaring Devastation) the damage and immobilze AoE effects actually happen at 600 range, rather than the 800 range of the skill.

I suspect this is because the skill was originally 600 range during beta, and when the skill was updated during beta to 800 range the secondary effects were not updated too.

The damage, immobilize and blue burst animation all happen at 600 range.

I suspect the allied AoE heal effect may also apply at 600 range too.

The amount of reflection in this game

Posted by: Ezrael.6859

Main offenders being Tempest / Scrapper and Chronomancer.

  • Tempest aurashare and Scrapper with the AoE toolbelt to cover entire groups.
  • Ele / Mesmer with the ability to grant a lot of personal projectile reflection while their ranged power damage is just magical instant hitting with no similar counter. Mesmer GS / Ele Scepter.

Why do ranged power projectiles get such hate? No other type of damage source gets hard countered in this way where your outgoing damage is not only nullified but inflicted back at you.

Power melee doesn’t suffer from this unless you’re playing a Guardian.

Conditions don’t suffer from reflection whether ranged or melee.

The reflection power-creep needs to be toned down or mechanically changed to be more skillful, more targeted skills like DH Deflecting Shot and less stuff like personal based 360 reflection, mindless no skill hard counters are bad.

Guardian skills that suffer from reflection

in Guardian

Posted by: Ezrael.6859

Ezrael.6859

Right now we have several skills that count as projectiles only for the negative mechanic of being reflected back at us or with no business being on melee weapons due to the power-creep since HoT with reflections – specifically Scrapper, Tempest, Chronomancer and Warrior.

No projectile finishers.

Sword – Sword Wave / Zealot’s Defense

Scepter – Orb of Wrath

Hammer – Zealot’s Embrace

Staff – Orb of Light (technically pierces but it’s too slow to be of consequence)

Torch – Zealot’s Fire

Focus – Ray of Judgement

And in a poor place due to the reflection power-creep.

Greatsword – Whirling Wrath / Binding Blade

Right now the only weapon setup a Guardian can bring that carries no skills to be reflected is Mace / Shield. Our very defensive set that relies on enemies wanting to share the same small circle as us.

These skills need looking into, either remove the projectile mechanics to avoid overbearing reflection issues or give them a benefit like piercing or projectile finishers.

Whirling Wrath should be updated to function like Arc Divider.

Grandmaster
1. Paladin’s Gift – Heal yourself and nearby allies when activating a Stance (1000)
2. Zealous Fury – Stun (1s) nearby foes when activating a Stance (120 range)
3. Faithful Purity – Dodging removes Confusion and Torment (10s ICD)

The aim with this specialisation was to create something that could be used as a mobile solo melee brawler with a few options for mobility. Or as a support playstyle.
This will provide an alternative to the meditations burst spec and offer more of a melee focused sustain spec. The increased defensive options are to balance out the fact that this spec would always want to be in the thick of the fight. Hence the availability of boons, reflection, poison healing reduction immunity and maintaining Virtue passives.

For mobility I wanted to make sure there were options for different playstyles, so a 25% boost if you have melee weapons, no need to take Stances or the Warhorn.
A restricted way to remove the shackle of Traveler Runes.
A boon boost ability if you wanted to work around the Warhorn solo or also grouped supporting allies and increasing the possible AH procs.
A Stance based version for someone that didn’t want only Warhorn.

The 1000 heal is there as an option to create a frontline damage support that could play well as heal spec or damage support spec especially with AH.
Maintaining Virtue Passives is there to allow more allied support without removing core self-sustain.

I wanted to be careful of the combo options available with Monk’s Focus and to not present a build too good. But the potential blending of Meditations and Stances means that you would have to choose between the 2k self heal or 1k group heal, lowering self-sustain.
I feel the Stance options themselves are pretty niche, I wanted to avoid obvious defensive power-creep choices like damage immunity and Resistance.

Taking a Warhorn for more boons means sacrificing the Focus or potentially running 2x 1H spec.

The 3 Blast Finisher on the Warhorn presents an interesting mechanic for either luring an enemy close to combo off your own field or Elite.
Or a ranged support option where you try to drop fields on enemies to blast while supporting your frontline allies / watching for friendly combo fields near enemies you can ranged blast.
I also wanted a way to generate decent Might but again with a melee focus, although potentially powerful self-Might stacking it again maintains the need for critical hits and to be close to enemies, risking heavy damage.

I also think it has options to blend into a limited condi spec through the Chill (I didn’t want to give it extra damage conditions as it would be too much for one specialisation). And it presents a different style of survivability so that Guardians are not pigeonholed into taking Valour and Meditations.
This should open up the possibility of taking the other trait lines more freely. Condi with Radiance Virtues Paladin for example.

As the Guardian has often been built around being in the thick of the fight or supporting allies I think this Paladin specialisation would offer options to help enhance various playstyles of the core Guardian.

The Guardian flaw

in Guardian

Posted by: Ezrael.6859

Ezrael.6859

The Guardian’s problem is that it was designed around defensively holding small circles.

Yet this is one playstyle for one game-mode in a game that has 3 game-modes and should have multiple playstyles.

But the Guardian is so vehemently designed around this principle that most of its traits and mechanics are useless outside of a group setting fixed around a small area.

Guardians have restricted mobility, which also makes it difficult to support other classes that have high mobility because the support is small ground based like Symbols and Consecrations.

Or slightly better with Shouts, but again, shouts are balanced around 5 allies receiving them, as soon as you reduce that to one or two allies, or a solo Guardian the shouts are a joke of boons vs durations and recharge, and the traits that affect them like Altruistic Healing also become useless.

Enter Meditations, because they have provided the only semblance of a solo playstyle for the Guardian since the beta weekends back in 2012, and since then I and many others have played the exact same playstyle, the only thing that has changed is Scepter Focus became Longbow with Dragonhunter.

Guardians need more options that work solo other than Meditations.

They need traits that aren’t utter crap because they are balanced around always having 4 allies, like Empowering Might which is horrible when solo compared to say Warrior’s Forceful Greatsword (no internal cooldown) and the combination of that and Phalanx Strength for great team Might generation.

Or a Herald simply using Facet of Strength and Shared Empowerment for huge group Might or self-Might stacking.

Zeal and Radiance offer pitiful trait choices for a solo player looking to do either Power or Condition damage, nothing much is gained, no mechanics changed and you’re simply better off going for Virtues.

Honor suffers terribly from being balanced around always having 4 allies near.

And the Guardian suffers from being mechanically old-meta.

We finally get a reliable ranged weapon that’s laced with projectiles just as everyone else gains lots of ways to reflect or destroy projectiles.

And we also have various skills that count as projectiles and therefore get reflected back or destroyed but carry no benefits of being projectiles, only downsides.
Sword chain 3, Sword 3, Torch 4, Staff 2, Focus 4, Hammer 3, Scepter 1. ALL get reflected

The game escalated a lot with various forms of personal survival through evades, reflection, damage immunity and blocks, Guardian was left behind.

Our attacks are slow and easily seen.
We are slow and easily kited.
We are balanced when everyone else isn’t

True Shot being the perfect example, immobilises the caster as they stop and crouch to fire, takes 1 second to cast, very easy to notice and either dodge or counter with a reflection.

Compared to say Relentless Assault – the auto-teleporting, Might generating, multi-hit high damage attack with a built-in 2 second evade on a 12 second cooldown…

The Reaper shouts use tech that reduces the cooldown depending on how many enemies are hit.

So why can’t the Guardian have the opposite tech, increase the cooldown based upon how many allies are hit?

That way you can have shouts with 12-20 second cooldowns when solo that scale up to 24-40 seconds when 4 allies also get boons.

And remove the internal cooldown from Empowering Might!
Now a solo Guardian could go for a boon based damage sustain build with shouts and Altruistic Healing that would also scale well into small group / team situations.

End 4 years of Meditations/Traveler Runes being the only viable solo/damage playstyle!

Guard GS vs Scapper Hammer autoattack

If a GS Guard and Ham Scrapper stood next to each other and pressed 2 the Scrapper would deal full damage and reflect the Guardian’s damage back to him.

Sword Auto 3 Projectile?

There’s no reason this skill should be a projectile.

If we had Roy Cronacher then maybe we could get a decent Sword like Revenant.

I probably didn’t play it as well as I could have but for those who want to see it in action as of recent, I have a few raw videos on twitch – not meant to hijack/pimp. I just captured gameplay to review myself and see what I can do different with the hammer.

Saiyan – any videos of game play?

Here you go.

For the record the above video doesn’t exactly show the greatest quality players (I nearly 1 shot a necro :o.. ) but it at least shows my gameplay. It’s by no means a montage vid, just made it quickly.

@mrauls
I don’t use Trav runes because speed increases is a QoL change rather than a performance increase. I’ll lose out on overall dps throughout a fight.

@baroi
You can’t use Mighty Blow + JI anymore. They unfortunately patched that combo.

As I said in my intro, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with JI. I just don’t think it’s wise to teleport inside a skirmish AoE group just to pull off Ring of Warding. I rather use Smite+CoP vs Mes/War/Necro but you can absolutely use JI if there’s no condi bursts on the other team. Most guards use it just fine in casual play so it’s your preferences!

You can still JI Mighty Blow

that doesnt count

Why doesn’t it count? Mighty Blow is casting while JI is used, the combo still works.

Who are the Top 3 PvP Guards?

in Guardian

Ezrael.6859

DH hasn’t had serious PvP representation since launch.
It’s too telegraphed and slow. The main attack has the most obvious cast animation in the game through a 1 second rooted crouch, they might as well make us shout ‘dodge roll’.

Some people like to play it to climb ladders and farm people that stand on point in traps and symbols. Which is apparently the level of player it has been balanced around.

Meanwhile Revenant has been in every team since launch through Condi and Power specs taking up 1 or 2 spots and everything is fine.
While also providing more group boons than a Guardian can.

Mace - Faithful Strike

Yes I mean the 3rd attack of the Mace auto-chain.

Right now it’s the only melee weapon that doesn’t have a cleave on one of it’s auto hits, after Thief dagger got bumped up to 2, while still being extremely fast.
Guard Mace is slow and clumsy, 1 target for the slow 3rd chain is pitiful.

Faithful Strike hits only 1 target for damage, the 5 targets tooltip indicates the allied heal.

I think it should change to strike 3 targets, heal once per target so 340 × 3.
And change to heal a maximum of 3 allied targets.

Needs to be able to hit up to 3 targets and heal for each one struck

Plus Symbol of Faith should be 1s cast time, down from 1.25

Most of our best damage comes from projectiles.

Longbow / GS 2, 5. Sword 3 & Auto 3. Torch 4.

Meanwhile you have Tempests able to have 50-75% uptime on personal reflection.
Mesmers with Reflection after dodging or on Manipulation utilities and a Reflection heal.
Warriors Blocking and Reflecting for 3s with Shield.
Scrappers with a 2s Reflection on a 6s cooldown + Gyro toolbar 5s or traited Turrets large AoE Reflection.

And not a reflection but Rev hammer also puts up a 50% uptime mobile projectile blocking wall, while itself having Coalescence of Ruin which does more damage than True Shot, can be cast on the move and can’t be Reflected in any way…
