I want horizontal progression not vertical.
Exactly this!
More skills, weapons, races, classes. Not more gear tiers!
You people really have some trust issues. They have officially said that they will not be creating further tiers of armor past this set. I’m sure they’re aware that they can be quoted on such matters. You aren’t wasting anything.
Decieve me once and I’ll look at any further statements from you with great suspicion. My trust in Anet to live up to their word is shattered.
I feel I’ve been subjected to a bait-and-switch in buying this game. It’s truely a shame as I dearly loved the original Guild wars and this game as well up till now.
As a soldier now less than 3 weeks from retiring I can say this, be prepared to miss out on lots of things that were important to you as a civilian and as an individual (Friends weddings, Funerals, weekends off, vacations, holidays, movies, etc).
Over the course of my almost 20 years I’d find myself stuck for months/years in odd parts of the world. While in CONUS at home station details, guard mounts, alert status, field training at huge blocks of time. Overseas deployments and tours are even more demanding. For most tours I was only able to take the most minimal of leave, on block leave too (i.e. not when I wanted it).
I have from time to time been able to play computer games, but those times were rare.
As an 11B3PH/38A3PH that was my experience. Some occupational specialties may be a bit easier for having gaming as a hobby.
It’s an interesting, challenging, and rewarding career, don’t get me wrong, but I think you will find your focus will shift to career related activities fairly quickly once you reach your first duty station.
A guy said this on another forum
A few quotes from 3 months back about gearing:
“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”
-Mike Obrien, President of ArenanetFun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.”
– Colin JohansonWhat a crock of kitten. Way to mislead your player base with rhetoric and now back peddling in the latest statements. If I had known this 5 months ago, I wouldn’t have bought this game in the first place. I was lied to and gaining the trust back of your customer base is one of the hardest things to do.
Having the expectation of no vertical gear based progression just like in the original Guild Wars was cemented in my mind by reading the manifesto prior to buying this game. I’m furious that they are doing a bait-and-switch on me. The lack of what they are introducing was the selling point for me.
Had I know that what is about to happen with this patch prior to purchase I would not have bought this game and all those gems, spent countless hours playing, or recommended this game to my friends.
I would have been happy to have stayed in TSW but for the genre. How much further along would I have been if I had spent my gaming hours and dollars there instead of here. It looks more and more like I’ll only be happy in GW1 or TSW, but I’m so infuriated at being lied to I may just stick with non-ANet product.
I’m not spending one more dime here if this vertical gear progression goes live!

Never its Arenanet! Try to stop all this QQ topis…
Crafting a legendary isnt req as “better” item its just about skin…
When will ppl learn to know what is skin or what is stats on items…I don’t believe that will be the case after the patch. They are bolstering legendary weapons up to match the new tiers level if my comprehension of their latest info is correct.
Still you will have change to get new weapons via dungeons, tokens… etc with same stats.
hmm, but they arent releasing the new tier weapons with this patch, it may be months before they are introduced.
They are unclear as the when a legendary weapons stats will be boosted. Will it be tomorrow? When their comperable weapon type in the new tier is introduced? I don’t know, but those with legendaries may have the upper hand for some months to come.

It’s going to make me not play at all. I’m simply not interested in gearing up again. I’ve been fully geared for some time and was enjoying being done with it and being able to do what I wanted in game.
Same for me. If this turns out how I suspect it will I won’t be playing this game at all.
Horizontal progression through the addition of new weapons and skills would be great. New areas to explore would always be welcome. New races and character classes would be awesome.
Vertical gear based progression was antithetical I had thought to the Guild Wars franchise. Thats why I loved the original Guild Wars and why after reading the manifesto for this game that I decided to by it.

– Colin JohansonLies, lies and more lies.
“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.
Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.
Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

I truly enjoyed Guild Wars and it’s lack of a gear centric design. I had hoped this game would follow in its predecessors footsteps. What I read about the design philosophy for GW2 compelled me to buy it.
This change may be a game breaker for me. I’ll continue to play to see how this inflation of gear stats and gates to content function, but my heart is full of trepidation.
I’m fine with more skins and new areas to explore. I had hoped that progression in this game would be horizontal with new types of weapons and new skills added like in the original Guild Wars.
If this game becomes gear centered it will simply join the legion of other games that do this. The Original Guild Wars was special in that regard.
I may be headed back over to TSW if this game is headed where I think it is.
I have a thief and an engineer who run dual pistols, but…
On my engineer I am usually using either flamethrower or the elixer gun so I rarely actually use just the pistols.
On my thief the dual pistols is my ranged only set that I use only when in a large fight that I can fire into the mass from afar. he usually uses daggers as his primary weapon set.
Both characters are fun to play. As suggested above try each for a bit to see which you prefer or better yet buy another char slot to have one of each!
There are events to protect power sources on the maps with doors.
There is the endless combat of the Labyrinth.
Not an actual event activity, but a spin-off – I like rezing/escorting low level characters attempting the scavenger hunt at various choke points and hard spots.
I find them somewhat annoying, however I do find the Skritt most interesting and humorous. I think they would be far more fun to play as an added race.
OP – Have you put any effort into actually getting the book? I have done it on all my characters, some as low as level 12.
It is doable. It takes persistance. Good luck.
Isn’t that a I’ll trade you this 20g skin for your 40g skin scam?
The stuff is available in the TP. Look at the respective values folks. Don’t fall for this.
I managed to get my second book on two level 12s, one level 14, a level 22, a level 24, and and two level 32s.
I didn’t group or ask guildies to come along. I just did the trek. I died a lot. Someone totally unknown to me was always fast to come assist me on my way! (Kudos and thanks to them all!)
I also spent a lot of time on my 80s patrolling in those areas to assist lower level characters. It was great fun!
If you stop being timid and just jump in I think you’ll find the experience is fun!
I was able to add many good folks to my friends list with the book scavenging events, both while playing as a level 80 escorter and when playing a weak low level being persistant to get what I wanted.

I tend to use the free portals or walk everywhere. Zero in game cost, nice scenery, things to do along the way. In fact I think I have the most fun while in transit from place to place!
Try it sometime, slow your pace and just have fun.
Negative Nancies will be Negative Nancies.
It is just their nature. If everyone who played came to the forums to complain it would be one thing, but forum goers are but a small sampling of the playerbase and the negative Nancies are disproportionately represented. It’s like this on most all game forums.
The comments are good for a chuckle from time to time though, it’s what draws me to the forums.
I was able to do everything on characters as low as level 12.
The forays into higher tier maps was a bit daunting at first, but learning to avoid and skirt past enemies was actually quite a bit of fun. The other players were quite helpful and supportive of my efforts as well. I did find myself taking quite a few dirt-naps along the way but at low level repairs are cheap and someone helpful with a rez was never too far off or too long of a wait.
To those who helped me many thanks! Excelsior!
(I repaid my dues to the community at large by playing on my 80s to assist escorting low levels through the tough spots as well)

This has been a FUN week!
Thanks for the event!

Realistic!? In a fantasy game!
LOL
I demand realistic lightning bolts! I want weeping mothers, sisters, wives, and children. I want a guilt meter. Lets add a mental health tracking feature too.
Seriously if you want realism enlist and see a real war (hint: it’s ugly as hell, unpleasant, and in no way enjoyable or entertaining). I want nothing to do with realistic killing and maiming in game.
I broke down and bought the scythe skin. I had to have it! Frankly I think it is the best of the lot.
Had it been all dandied up I most likely would not have wanted it. Aesthetic tastes are a subjective thing though, so there is no right or wrong.
I just had to put my two cents in to show any dev that may read this thread that I think the scythe skin is GREAT! Thanks.
I just have to state my utter dismay at the fact than someone with the ability to turn on a computer, locate the game forums and post a new topic was also unable to look at their mini-map, see the pumpkin icon in LA, and go there and speak to the NPCs with pumpkin icons above them.
Wow! Just WOW!
The negativity expressed in these forums makes me laugh at times. Sad I know, but neither my friends nor I have a pile of issues makeing the game sooooo miserable. We just play and have fun.
I think aside from real bugs reported here many are just sad sacks. They enjoy complaining just to hear their own voices.
I have issues in low level areas as well as high. The human starter area was so full of bots today that completing missions was becoming difficult. It is kind of hard to complete hearts that require you to eliminate enemies when one is a melee character competing for them from packs of 4+/6+/8+ ranger bots using hacks.
I have seen bots on every single map I visit, and they are a nuisance to a problem in each.
They need to eradicate them from all maps. I and all my friends do stop and report them where ever we encounter them but the overall population of bots continues to increase as far as my experience is concerned.
TLDR – I want them removed from low level maps. I have a problem with them on low level maps. I and all my friends report every one we encounter.
On characters I made after the upgrade purchase it was just available under elite skills from the time of creation (unusable at level 1 but there).
I can’t recall if I got an item to click to unlock it on the account when I upgraded. (Bad memory, possibly senility kicking in lol.)
Edit – You have to wait until Elite skills are available to slot. Level 30 I think it is. You don’t need to buy it with skill points though, just drop it into the slot.

I upgraded to Digital Deluxe a week or so after launch. I got the Mistfire on all my characters except the first one I created during headstart. I don’t know what the problem was, but one of the patches along the way cleared it all up for me.
I’d recommend putting up a ticket to expedite its getting fixed as it is very handy to have an elite waiting for immediate use as opposed to having to wait through 10 more skill points without one.
That class with which you derive the most pleasure in playing.
I have tried all the classes out and not a one was incapable of participating in DEs.
If you only derive pleasure from maximizing drops I’m sure others will have input along those lines.
In an age where inflation is running rampant the $60 I paid was quite a value for the entertainment provided so far. Best thing is it will continue to entertain!
Two days ago I filled up a 32 gallon gas tank with 87 octane gasoline @ $4.86 a gallon. My gas tank tank is at 1/4 tank now! This game was steal at $60.

It’s the small things that give a game it’s soul.
Easter eggs and exploration on maps large enough to make it challenging to find those hidden bits of content make for a great game IMHO.
I played GW1 through all its expansions. So I guess it was just natural progression of the product line I’ve liked so much. While quite diferent from GW1 I’m have a lot of fun with GW2.
No regrets at all.
49 and loving the game.
I’ve been playing all types of computer games since my Apple 2e days and this one is most definately captivating.

Gem store about buying items without my aproval?

Posted by: Ferguson.2157
I had a similar occurance last night. Somehow my gems were spent to buy a dyepack. I hadn’t even looked at the gem purchase page of the store for weeks as I’ve been slowly spending gems only on inventory bag unlocks of late.
I had previously changed my password after getting one report of a chinese origin attempt to log into my account. I have not received any more e-mail warnings from you of attempts to log into my account since then.
The game somehow bought one dyepack for me, the most that it could given my scant few gems lol. I can live with that no big deal as far as those few gems go, however there is something wrong with the store doing that. I’m gonna shy away from acquiring any more gems for now till this issue is sorted. I submitted a bug report in-game on this.
