Do you mean the head scratch thing?
I love it. It’s absolutely adorable.
It’s not really a head scratch, it’s kind of a hair ruffle thing. Have you never seen guys do this in real life? Guys do this all the time if they’re talking to someone they like or slightly nervous etc.
It’s cute.

Interesting bit of Djinn lore

There’s definitely a lot to the Djinn. Here’s some GW1 wiki articles if you wanted to take a look. There were Djinn in GW1 who actually helped us out in certain situations/missions and were working towards keeping Abbaddons taint out of Elona.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Djinn
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Dehjah
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Kinya_Kela
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Yartu

They also have the ability to transform into humans (We Dehjah do it when she’s helping us in the Rilohn Refuge mission and Yartu can as well)

They do seem to be able to be captured and or forced into servitude.
There were Djinn in Sorrow’s Furnace (GW1 elite dungeon, it’s now know as Sorrows Embrace in GW2) that were used to power the Iron Forgeman, and obviously there’s Zommoros stuck inside the Mystic Forge.

My cultural armor got shinier in the hero panel but not on my in game character model. Has anyone else noticed this?

That is probably a trick of the lighting.
The Hero panel lighting is controlled and constant. Out in the real world the lighting changes and you get shadows from large terrain objects that actually effect the shininess and lightness of your armour.

I hope they include a new profession, new armor, skills, and wvw things because if it is just a new story-line I will be hard pressed to buy it.

New Classes, new Crafting Professions, New Weapons, New Skills, New Traits, New Armors&Weapon models, New Zones, New Races, New game Modes.

are a must!! get working on it Anet.

I agree with all of this except crafting professions. I think the current professions kind of cover all the bases. When you start putting in too many it just becomes a nuisance.

As for new classes, one of the Fractals (the one with the colossus) heavily hints at some new version of the Ritualist from GW Factions (it also has Assassins but we have them already, they just got renamed thiefs).

Even Tyria has hot models!

Aside from being very cute, is it just me or she really has elf-like, pointed ears? It’s more obvious in the in-game view at the Home page of the Gem Store.

If so, we may meet elves in one of the unexplored & unknown continents. :P And clearly, that ingenious Evon found a way to import such a mysterious, exotic beauty from that faraway land. ;-P

They look pointy yes, but I think it’s just a stray brush stroke.
We aren’t going to meet elves. When they were creating the Sylvari one of the things they said over and over again was that they didn’t want to have “just another elf race” in game. Also I don’t feel like another race so similar to humans makes sense when we already have Humans and Norns (and debatably Sylvari).

Dominion of Winds is their City not a starting zone.

just because it’s walled in doesn’t mean it’s a only city. i still think it’s gonna be a zone. or are there any sources that already state it’s only a city?

“The Dominion of Winds is a walled-off tengu city on an island chain south of Kryta”
Whilst that is off the wiki so it’s possible that it wasn’t sources correctly, I am pretty sure it was.

I feel like it’s also really important to point out that The DoW is built atop Sanctum Cay, which wasn’t exactly a massive island in GW1. And yes the water levels across Kryta have changed in the 250 years, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have drastically increased in size, and actually, Sanctum Cay was a similar size to the GW2 cities.

FlamingFoxx.1305

Caledon Forest? Are you aware of the Dominion of Winds? I think it’s pretty obvious that that would be the perfect Tengu starting zone if they’re introduced as a playable race. Also, if i recall correctly, the “we don’t want to add more starting zones/tutorials” quote was only referring to the confusion the different campaigns caused for new players of GW1. Obviously they would want to avoid that, and i believe that’s one of the reasons they said they wouldn’t go with that expansion model again.

Dominion of Winds is their City not a starting zone. The Dominion of Winds has gates leading out onto Caledon Forest a level 1-15 zone and Kessex Hills a level 15-(20?) zone. In Kessex hills there is an area aptly titled “Dominion killing zone”, you wouldn’t call something a killing zone if there were enemies to be found inside your own walls.

The way I took it was that they didn’t want to add more low level areas because of the nature of GW2, to force level 80’s to go back into zones where they can kill everything in 1-3 shots isn’t something they want to do. It’s accepted with the current 5 starting zones, but I think they want to avoid adding more.

Is it just me or is the volume on the character selection screen insanely loud?
It should be at the same volume as the Background music in game and yet it most definitely isn’t. I actually find myself quickly clicking on my character before the music can start playing (which is sad because I actually REALLY love the music, it’s just too loud).

I have the Master volume slider set to full and the background music set to full, but in game nothing else is as loud as the CSS music.

My computers volume isn’t particularly high either, it’s only at 19% volume which is great for everything else and great in game while I’m playing. It’s just for some reason the CSS is deafeningly loud.

Fix please?

Expansions will not be here for 3+ years.

What makes you say that?

Guild Wars Prophecies was released on April 28, 2005.

Guild Wars Factions on April 28, 2006

Guild Wars Nightfall on October 27, 2006

and Guild Wars Eye of the North on August 31, 2007

That’s three expansions within about a three year time span, the first of which occurred one year after the game’s initial release.

Common sense dictates that expansion will not come out within 3yrs. First, the game director already confirm that they are NOT actively working on the expansion, they dont have a dedicated team on it, they are using all their resource to push on new content monthly. They already have the first 6 month planned out in new content, and more to come in the future, suffice to say that they will focus on the original game for at least 1 year. Next, Gw1 cant be compared to Gw2 in terms of scale, a massive game like Gw2 is going to require more time, and needed at least 1.5year of dedicated programming to meet the quality we expect, and then addition time for internal testing, betas, etc. Even when they work on the expansion, they will most likely still push out new content every once in a while = more delay in the expansion.

Can you link to where exactly they’ve said they don’t have a team actively working on an expansion.

If, if, they introduce new races (I wouldn’t mind Tengu), I hope to God they get their own city, their own zones running from level 1 to at least 40 with Dynamic Events Renown Hearts on the level of those in other zones, and voice work on par with the five established races.

The only issue with that is I seem to recall them saying that they didn’t want to have to create more low level zones after the games release. The Tengu definitely make sense in that regard though, their starting zone would most probably be Caledon Forest, solving the issue of creating an entirely new starting zone. The issue with that is that Caledon Forest is FULL of Risen. Tengu would be coming it at a time after Zhaitans defeat, so it would make no sense for their starting zone to be full of enemies that chronologically shouldn’t exist.

GW2 has never had that…
I think perhaps you’ve confused this with another game?

I think he meant GW1 which did updates and map downloads while you were playing. I suppose it’s not possible now because GW2 isn’t completely instanced like GW1 was. But yeah if that could be implemented again it would be awesome. On my current connection at home, because it’s shared bandwidth it took me 7hrs to download the 1gb of files.

Didn’t help that I left it on when I went to work expecting it to be done, but because they added another patch in between, the update stalled and I had to start it over when I came home. And spent my time waiting (well at least I got in a few TV shows, chatted with family and etc) but still, big update chunks not good for people on slower connections especially when we’re trying to catch up on daily achievements.

Nope GW1 also required a re-log and launcher patch for updates. Quite distinctly recall the “a new build is available” text showing up in the chat and then alerting you at time intervals.

You have always had to download the patch using the Launcher.
Since the release of the game every time there has been an update anyone who it online gets a message saying that there is a new patch and they will be logged out in X minutes.

Updates update the client and the dat file, there is no way they could simply apply updates to individual maps while you’re playing.

I think perhaps you’ve confused this with another game?

Now, i cannot imagine it was 400GB in size, it was done in about 90 minutes. very strange calculations on that downloader there.

The % downloaded refers to the % of files downloaded, not the overall size.
So if you have 100 files each file will count as 1%. However they will all be different sizes, so you could have 1 file that is 200MB and the rest are only 1MB, but the 200MB file will still only count as 1%.

Short question: Is it safe to delete the Wintersday items we have that are presently useless, or will they be usefull to hold onto until next year. (They really shouldn’t lump us with useless items that have to be held onto for a year)

I have a couple of toy frames and 200 mystic cogs taking up almost an entire bar of bank space. It’s not really optimal. My bank is crowded enough as it is.

They’ve commented on this quite recently I believe. The gist of it was that if you have party sizes larger than 5 the amount of screen space you end up taking up is insane. A lot of people do have smaller screens.

5 people parties allow for easy monitoring of everyone in the party and they work well with the current game mechanics and dungeon setups.

8 people parties only really worked so well in GW1 because we had hero/hench and each profession was designed to have very very specific roles.

And so my hope for the update shattered.

Not sure what to tell ya man

Legendaries have the same stats as exotics though and are purely cosmetic.
Ascended is a new gear tier that sits above exotic. I don’t think its unreasonable to expect that you should be able to earn and equip the gear on all of your characters, rather than be punished for taking the time to level and invest in multiple alts.

That being said I think it’s a bit early to complain. They’ve said numerous times that they’re going to be expanding the ways you can get ascended gear and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see that a bit later on in the year.

But I’m pretty sure the answer is no there will not be mounts in GW2.
They wouldn’t serve a function. Characters have plenty of access to speed boosts and fast travel is done through Waypoints and Asura Gates. If you want to explore then do it on foot. If you don’t want to explore then WP. Mounts don’t really fit into the system very well. (They’re also very cluttery. They take up large amounts of space and block peoples vision or access to things in game which breaks immersion. Can you imagine trying to do a Jumping Puzzle with a large Charr sitting on a large horse or Dolyak. No thank you >.>

Revert Hero panel

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Well, the disadvantage of text is that if you put too much stacked, then it is hard to read and becomes cluttered. They expanded the info display, so if they tried the same with text, it’d be just hard to read and separate rows.

Imagine the IPad and all the apps it has. Icons are much easier to use when there is a lot of things. Also, that’s why Windows 7-8 uses icons for its task bar instead of having full text in the taskbar.

But in all of those situations an Icon is representing a program rather than a concept that relates to numbers. If you show me the google chrome logo then yes I know if I click that it will open google chrome. but it isn’t representing something with numbers.
Icons only limit clutter if they’re there on their own. When you have icons with very different numbers next to them in multiple rows it just gets confusing.
(I also feel it’s important to point out that on an iPad you have both the icon and what it represents underneath the icon.)
Actually if you wanted to take a cue from apple that might be the way to go. Have the text very very small underneath the icon. That does however just produce more clutter and you only need two, not all three.

Revert Hero panel

FlamingFoxx.1305

Where would you put the text? (And keep in mind that you need to allow for other languages.) Once you learn the new icons I don’t think that you’ll have any difficulty with number crunching. (There’s MORE info available now than there used to be.)

I’m not a game designer so I’m not really equipped with the necessarily knowledge to tell you where exactly everything should go. All I can tell you is that icons are extremely confusing.
There is a reason why when people are working with databases or spreadsheets there is a combination between numbers and letters. Numbers and letters and ingrained into our brains, they’re something we’ve all worked with since we were small children and they make a lot of sense together.

Icons are great at presenting an idea or as a broad indication of function, but they’re not a substitute for the immediate understanding that comes with a word. If I look at a shield icon with some numbers next to it, yes I get a general understanding of what those numbers represent but I don’t know they represent the effectiveness of my armour, my characters toughness or resistance to something else.

So yes, over time myself and others will adjust and get used to the symbols. But in an MMO where you want things to be as unconfusing for players both old and new alike asking them to memorize and identify with symbols isn’t the best way to get them to understand their stats.

As for solutions, obviously I’m not familiar with the limitations of the system or with all of the discussion and analysis that has already been put into it but the UI window and the text is actually rather large as it is. I would have no problems with the text being scaled down or with a new Tab put into the hero panel. (Side note, it would be really great to be able to access the panels with keybindings e.g. pressing K to bring up the skills panel, rather than pressing H then having to click the skills tab).

Also someone else pointed out that they’re the same icons used in the traits panel, icons which every time I’m looking at traits I have to mouseover since in the trait panel there are I think 10 different icons. If there were only 5-6 stats then I would probably be fine with icons because it would be relatively easy to pick up on their meanings, but with so many it just becomes a confusing jumble. With a word you only have to look at it once to know EXACTLY what it means and you are therefore immediately enlightened as to the purpose and function of the numerical value sitting next to it.

Obviously this is just one opinion though as with others commenting it is obvious that there are those who both like and dislike the new stat UI (oh wow what a shocker, people have different opinions! xD)

FlamingFoxx.1305

I personally find the changes that were just made to the hero panel remarkably confusing.
They contain the exact same information that they did before, the only difference is that we can no longer see the words unless we hover the icon.

Icons can be a great replacement for words and can often make an interface look less bulky. But there are times when words are much much better. You’re presenting data to players and they need to be able to quickly and easily look at multiple numbers and understand exactly what they mean. The icons detract the ability to do that.

I don’t understand the thought process by which a whole bunch of icons is supposedly better at communicating the concepts and making the interface less confusing? It really was less confusing beforehand. If I suddenly decide I want to know how much power my character has and what his attack power is I should be able to open up the hero panel and look and say “ok so thats the attack and thats the power”. I don’t want to look at it and think “oh darn, now I have to hover over these to figure out what each one is and how it related to the others”.

Please please change it back >.> -cries-

Staff is great I find. You have a massive range of conditions you can apply and if you combine all of the combo field attacks it has with the Utlities Arcane Blast and Arcane Wave Ele’s can perform a huge number of combo attacks without assistance of other professions.
If you trait with Blasting staff your AoE covers an even larger distance which is great for both damage and support. If you play effectively you can also do a great job of keeping enemies away from you. In Earth cast skill 5 to stop the enemy from moving then cast skill 2 to deal bleeding and damage. Then skill 4 to cripple them when they come out of immobilization. Then Water skill 3 to chill them and water skill 2 to deal some more damage while they’re unable to move far. Switching to Air you can then cast skill 3 to send them flying backwards away from you and then skill 5 which will temporarily stop them as they run back towards you. (or course this is just an example and only really works on melee classes, but there are definitely ways to mitigate damage from casters as well.
Staff ele’s are awesome

in Lore

I would be cautious of making that assumption. There was nothing to suggest it had any kind of magical protection from weathering. It was simply built to withstand the Shiverpeaks conditions. Only with Jormag rising the Far Shiverpeaks have since been subjected to catastrophic blizzards and Icebrood, which it probably wasn’t designed to withstand.

It is however possible it has some kind of protection on it. I feel like if the Icebrood found it they would turn it into a lair as we see the Sons of Svanir do with caverns and houses. So either it’s remained unseen (a little bit funny considering we call it the “Eye of the North”) or it’s protected against those it deems dangerous/dragons. But we really can’t say for sure.

It is definitely the most well preserved part of GW1 though. Most other landmarks feel just a bit too changed, especially concerning Ascalon.
I did love going back into Sorrow’s Furnace and finding the fountain from the Henge of Denravi though.

Yes it was presumably pretty old when we first found it. But it had never been attacked (either directly or indirectly) so it was in good condition (although I think it was mentioned that it might have once been taller but the spire had been broken off? – I could have imagined reading that though). I suppose the idea now is that Jormag has caused some damage to it what with him rampaging around up there.

Part of the issue is that they designed Lions Arch to be central and didn’t really keep that in mind for the other cities.

In L.A you have the bank, TP and crafting in very close proximity.
Some of the other cities aren’t quite as well laid out.

That being said I do quite often go to the Grove instead. It’s prettier, it lags less and the layout is really good around the crafting area

Revealing armor for Male Characters

I’m partially for this. However I don’t really see the point, human males are so bizarrely proportioned that it would just look gross.

I’m all for showing some skin on my Sylvari, but it can look a bit jarring having green peaking through armour.

I honestly don’t understand why they don’t have this.
We had it in Guild Wars 1, all of your armour and customised weapons had you characters name on them and it was brilliant.
I’d love to know where the thought process is in NOT putting such a great feature into the successor to such a brilliant executed game >.> :P

Uhhh Anet. I feel like it’s important to point out that whilst enemies cannot be pushed off cliffs they can most certainly be knocked back into water. Which subsequently breaks them if they aren’t equipped to handle that.

I KB’d a Grub today which then just sat in the water unable to do anything as I killed it. I also came across some odd Champion enemy (it was sort of humanoid with wings and a dragon-like head) which someone had pushed into the water and was just floating backwards and forwards above the water with no movement animations and the inability to attack. It was marvelous.

There are male couples and it would be silly to suggest that there aren’t considering the whole thing about the Sylvari is that they enter relationships that are based on love rather than on gender. Whether or not you see them does just depend on if you go looking or not and on what character biography choices you make. As some others have mentioned The Green Knight storyline features a gay couple.

Arenanet doesn’t really care how people react to it since it’s already in the game and there actually hasn’t been any in game community backlash over it.
Why? Because it’s great and most people have no problem with it.

With regards to the other races I’m quite certain it isn’t an issue. There isn’t anything in Tyria that says relationships are between a man and a woman.

With the war in Ascalon and the Flame Legions ‘no woman in war’ policy from back in the GW1 days you can bet there are same sex Charr relationships. Charr place importance in their Legions and warbands and are very much about working together so I can’t see them having an issue with it. Charr no longer have seperated gender roles, both men and woman fight and cubs are raised by their warband not necessarily their parents/mother so they are all on equal footing.

Norn place importance on strength. I think for them same sex relationships are fine because a partner should be chosen based on their strength. Norn admire people who are strong. I don’t think they’d care what gender that person is.

In a very similar way the Asura admire and place importance on intellect.

Sorry to burst your bubble but they were already there…

The Heart just outside Twinspur Haven centers around killing Sons of Svanir and there is an event that occurs quite often with a Svanir and a whole lot of wolves.

This update itself is supposed to be quite small and is the “Prelude” and sets the scene for the larger February and March updates, which are supposed to boast “an expansion worth of content”.

I would like to point out the gaping hole in your theory.
If their appearance had anything to do with humans then humanity would have record of Jotun and Norn from a LOT earlier.

As it stands the first time humans encountered both races was during the events of the GW1 campaign Eye of The North, which is only 250 years ago.
