I’m not sure they’d do that storyline since it was already done in GW1. The War in Kryta was a civil war, we fought to overthrow the White Mantle and place Salma on the throne. It would feel kind of ridiculously if we got the same storyline reversed. Which isn’t to say it couldn’t happen.

As Nitro says, it’s showing you the percentage of remaining files for the download. So you can safely quit the installer, just when you open it will start from 0% again, however all the files you previously downloaded are still there, they’re just not a part of the remaining percentage. No need to worry. You’re safe to quit the launcher as many times as you want during the download process.

If you’re asking whether to copy paste or clean install GW2, the answer is copy paste. The only two files GW2 needs to run are gw2.exe and gw2.dat, neither of which will be any different depending on your OS. Resintalling might slim your gw2.dat down a little bit since it gets rid of any old data the game doesn’t use anymore, but it’s not really necessary.

Question about names.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Because the system isn’t designed around being able to change them. Staff can change them, but serious issues can arise from that, and so they will only do so if absolutely necessary. It’s not worth having lots of people’s accounts potentially breaking just to allow people to change their names.
Not only that, but it presents an issue from an identification standpoint. Your display name is the way other players can recognise you. If you were able to change your display name what’s to stop you from abusing that system to evade someone or continually abuse someone while making it very difficult for yourself to be caught.
It would also put unnecessary strain on customer support if people were contacting them all the time about getting their display names changed.

As a general rule it is good to exert common sense when creating accounts online. Usually the names you pick are permanent and in future I’d caution you against using a name unless you know you’re going to be happy with it in the long term.

There is no ‘just HOT’, the base game is now ‘free’ and included with HOT .. well, that’s Anet’s spin on it.

They meant the base HoT package, as in, without any of the perk items. They weren’t making a comment about HoT vs. base game, but rather about the standard vs deluxe vs ultimate and how much it costs just for the standard edition.

Honestly if I were you I would want to watch it on youtube anyway. When/if it comes out it will be different enough to still be new and interesting for you, but this way you’ll have a better understanding of the story and how it actually unfolded.

Asking support is the only way you’ll get an answer.

As to the sale thing though, I don’t know why you’d expect to get a refund if it went on sale after you purchased it?
If you go into a store and buy some clothes, or a computer, or a toaster or whatever and it goes on sale a week later, or even a day later, you will not be refunded for the sale price.
You made the decision to purchase the good at the price at which it was sold. You did so with an awareness that it could go on sale at any time, and that you were not purchasing it on sale.

Here’s the full quote for anyone interested:

“When we shipped the game originally we used a third-party shell to ‘host’ the Windows version. While this got the product out the door on Mac there are some things we haven’t been able to do to make it a true Mac application. We are actively experimenting with getting native code that runs directly on the Mac with OpenGL etc. I don’t know how long it will take to make it “real” but I can say that this week we finally got it compiling, linking, and starting up on a Mac before it crashes at the login screen."

Thanks for pointing it out Figlilly! I had asked the same question early on in the AMA but didn’t receive an answer (because obviously it’s very easy for things to get buried on reddit), but I’m glad they answered it somewhere and it is indeed good news!

It applies to all of your characters. Your account now has LW S2 unlocked and you’ll be able to play it with all characters past present and future.

It does not however include LW S1. Season 1 was done in a very different format and consisted of open world events that lasted for a set duration. It was never made replayable and as a result the only people who have experienced it are those who were around for each release. There is talk of potentially releasing Season 1 at a later date, though that would require a complete reworking of it (as the format was entirely different, it wasn’t instanced stories but instead open world events, some of which occurred at a set time only once) and would therefore take some time.

Hope that helps! Bottom line: You don’t need to buy Season 2 again. It’s unlocked for your whole account. And you don’t have Season 1, nor can you buy or play it at the moment.

If you want to read up about Season 1 so that you understand the story then this is a great place to start: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Living_World_season_1

Elite specializations are just another build option. They’re not necessarily better than the existing builds, they just present different play style and build opportunities.
If you’re running a good build you should still be able to counter most things that people can throw at you. Understanding the elite specs would be a smart place to understand, but the only disadvantage you’re at is that you can’t use an elite spec (which is only a disadvantage if you wanted to use one).

There were a lot of sly Consortium things added with the new Lions Arch.
I wouldn’t worry if I were you. While the direction of the main storyline is reasonably clear, that doesn’t mean that these other plot points won’t be gone into. They’re definitely far more minor though, by which i mean their impacts aren’t quite so significant as that of the Elder Dragons. Arenanet is more likely to touch on those points in smaller releases, perhaps akin to the LW S1 mode, if they ever return to something like that.

Of course in an MMO as big as GW2 it’s not going to be possible for every plot detail to be touched on, but things like the Consortium have seen a long and slow build up. Their story is going somewhere, it’s just a matter of time.

Egocentrism

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Ethnocentrism is quite a different thing to egocentrism, and quite different to what you’re writing about. So I’m not sure why you chucked that in as if it were interchangeable?

It’s also very worth pointing out that people on an MMO forum not wanting to listen to other’s opinions does not make the egocentrics. If you’re studying psychology that’s probably something you should get a handle out. A singular characteristic does not a diagnosis make.

People get excited about the prospect of video games being how they want them to be. It’s very easy to assume that one’s own ideas will make everything amazing and that anyone else’s ideas are therefore in direct opposition. People are also generally less caring of other’s opinions in online situations. The internet gives people a voice with no culpability. So yeah, people on the forums can be a little bit self-oriented, but that doesn’t make them egocentrics.

I’d also really like to point out that there’s nothing wrong with people complaining or critiquing how the game is. It is really important for people to be able to voice issues or concerns, and also to be able to make suggestions. The forum exists partly for those very reasons. Yes there is a lot of non-constructive criticism that goes on here, but that doesn’t necessarily invalidate it either. Not everyone has been taught how to make their criticism constructive, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to speak up. It’s up to the developers to decide what’s constructive and what they’re going to listen to.

People complaining about things shouldn’t have an impact on your own enjoyment of the game. If it’s bothering you then I’d suggest avoiding the forums :/

Questions About the Mac Client

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

The game data is stored entirely in the app, which houses the very large GW2.dat file, the same as the windows version, that basically is the game.
It’s not possible to convert the game from DirectX to OpenGL from the user end. It is something that would need to be done by the development team because simply having access to the game files isn’t the whole story. There’s a lot that is stored on the server and the game simply isn’t designed to be compatible with OpenGL.
OpenGL and DirectX aren’t comparable systems, it’s not simply a matter of shifting the assets from one to the other, the game has been designed around DirectX.

As Quigi points out, you’ll need to create a support ticket. If your name was changed without warning and you weren’t asked to select a new one then you should have contacted support and requested that it be changed to something specific, or asked for clarification on their action.

Name based decisions usually occur based on reports from people in the GW2 community, so just because there are people running around with similar names to what you had doesn’t make those names now acceptable. It just means nobody has reported those people. Arenanet do not personally review every single account or character name, they rely on people reporting those that are found offensive.

Yeah ticket done so wait and see.

BTW , We talk about a account name here not a character name. I doubt I’ll create and play a character with that sort of name. All i asked in the ticket is to get my original account name back. ( display name )

did you try to make a play on words with yours? funny.

I’m not aware of any pun in my name?
I’m doubtful that they’ll change your account/display name back to what it was. Account names still have to adhere to the same requirements as character names since they’re visible to others. Hopefully they’ll allow you to select a new display name though.

Third party software that offers any kind of in game advantage or otherwise goes against the EULA is strictly forbidden. Graphical overlays don’t interfere with the game itself (they’re just something placed over the top essentially) so they shouldn’t be an issue. However they’re not officially sanctioned and therefore do still pose a risk (though many people use them without it ever being a problem, so its basically up to you).

You’re just going to have to google SweetFX or GemFX and find them through there. I’m pretty sure there are guides on the GW2 Reddit if you need some help.

Q: GW2 versions?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

“Core” refers to the base game. The standard edition, digital deluxe edition, heroic edition, and collectors addiction are all “core” versions, meaning that when you purchased them you gained access to the core GW2 game.

If you still had one of those keys and used them now you would gain a full account for the original GW2 game. You would not get HoT, but you also wouldn’t be hampered by the restrictions placed on a F2P player.

Purchasing any HoT edition gains you access to the core game (equivalent to the original standard edition of GW2 that didn’t come with any bonus items) and of course grants you any bonus items relevant to the HoT edition you purchased.

In regards to Question #2, you’re correct. Upgrading or purchasing to a specific edition ‘overwrites’ any previous additions, however all you’re gaining is any new bonus items. And purchasing HoT does not remove any bonus items you had previously gained, just adds HoT to your account.

Bottom line: you get what you paid for. If you purchased an original GW2 key/account (of any edition) and did not previously renew it, you would now get that specific edition that you purchased if you were to now renew it. You will not be upgraded to a HoT account simply because that isn’t what you purchased.

Mac version crashes constantly

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

As Figlilly points out, the mac version of the game just doesn’t work very well.

It’s a port, rather than a native client. Which means that it’s not going to run perfectly. On a mac GW2 is run through a Cider wrapper, which basically emulated the necessary components that GW2 would need to run in Windows, but on a mac. The first thing that this does is take up a whole lot of extra resources, because your computer isn’t just running GW2, it’s having to translate a whole lot of DirectX calls into OpenGL (macs don’t have DirectX, and GW2 isn’t designed in OpenGL). The second thing this means is that there’s a 32 bit limitation imposed on GW2 on a mac. Meaning that the client only has access to 4GB of ram – which, on top of the fact that the game has a bad memory leak, means that regardless of how much RAM your computer has, GW2 is going to crash a whole lot.

If you’re able to install Windows through bootcamp then I’d strongly recommend it.

2-3 weeks ago a submarine cable somewhere in the Pacific got damaged and everyone from SEA/OCX region had horrible latency (Pings so high, the game gave up on even measuring it). It’s a lot better now, but I still get periods of higher than normal latency. AFAIK the cable isn’t fixed yet.

I know it’s an obvious question, but is anyone else using the internet at the time? Whenever someone uploads videos/photos in my household, my pings go through the roof. Doesn’t seem to happen when they are downloading though.

Sounds like your upload speed is really low (could be your package you have, could be a problem with your connection). You should confirm with your ISP what your upload speed is, and test it. From there, if it’s supposed to be higher then it is, you might be able to fix your issue.

Through most of SEA/Oceania upload speeds have like a maximum of 1Mbps. So there’s not really anything that can be done about that. It’s the same for me, if someone is uploading something (even just a pdf to an email) my internet becomes awful. Conversely if someone is downloading something it doesn’t really affect it a whole lot (I have 10Mbps download).

FlamingFoxx.1305

HOT looks really cool but i don’t think its worth 50 alone, Anet is basically saying that the core game is literally worth nothing. Do you have a link to that other thread? I would like to see what others think about this

Don’t buy it now. Expansion have many bug which make you stress than to enjoy a game. Core guild wars 2 is better than HoT for me.

See personally I would say do buy it now. I’m yet to encounter any bugs and the HoT population is in a really good place.

It IS worth pointing out for OP that I think Arenanet have said that with each new expansion the previous releases will be made available for free. So theoretically when the next expansion comes out, buying that will also get you HoT. So you may find the purchase to be more worth it then.

When Living World Season 3 comes out however, you’ll need HoT to unlock it. So if you don’t have HoT you’ll miss out and will have to pay to purchase it later. So it should be noted that when you buy HoT you’re also paying for any future LS releases. That’s definitely worth it in my opinion. HoT also adds a lot of new content.
