? want to a menu sistem that auto working queue when you want to enter any danguen as like other mmo has.

They’ve specifically avoided putting in an auto-queue because it encourages PUGs (pick up groups). By using LFG tool that is in game players at least have to interact with one another in some way. It is how it is to encourage interaction and to get the point across to people that raids are going to require a lot of coordination.

It’s not their fault that you can’t be bothered actually interacting with other people…

I don’t know why you think you need to show me what a queue is… I know exactly what they are and how they work. If you actually read and attempted to comprehend what I’m saying then you’d have a very simple answer on why Arenanet haven’t put queues like that in game.
Obviously you really like the idea of a queue, however it’s not likely to happen. Queues like that are typical of Korean MMO’s like Tera and Blade and Soul, so perhaps you would be more at home playing one of those games?
GW2 is a Western MMO, meaning it is going to have different systems in place that appeal far more to Western audiences than to Asian audiences.

Honestly it’s hard to understand what you’re saying, but it sounds like you just tried to suggest that GW2 is a korean game? If that is what you just said then you’re sorely mistaken. GW2 is made by Arenanet which is a US company/developer.

I also never said that you’re Korean. I stated that the features you seem to be requesting, and most of the examples you’re showing, are from Korean MMOs. So maybe you’d have more fun playing one of those? Maybe GW2 isn’t the kind of game you’re looking for.

GW2 already has a group finder. The difference is you have to actively a select an advertised group to join, rather than the game automatically putting you into one. This allows people to actually tailor their groups to the content and advertise for specific things. What’s so hard about using the existing LFG tool? There isn’t going to be a queue system in game. I’ve explained why.

It’s against the forum code of conduct to call for a staff response to something, and they very rarely respond directly to people’s suggestions. You’re not going to get a response from them.

Is GW2 the best MMO?

Way to obvious a reassurance post for starters you only mention BNS but don’t give any reasons at all. NCSoft Published GW2 and they have many MMOs including BNS and BNS is obviously a culmination of all their games.

NCSoft published GW2, but in no way developed or created it. An NCSoft team developed BnS. GW2 was created by a US developer, BnS by a Korean developer. They’re very very different beasts. BnS is no way a “culmination” of all NCSoft’s games.

GW2 launched in 2012 while BNS launched in 2012 in Korea

By looking at the development over time one can see BNS was straightforward they offered people what they started off with and didn’t drastically change.

GW2 as an MMO doesn’t make any sense however it’s literally been a trainwreck of ideas and everything feels like an experiment in MMO design rather than a complete product. They dipped into just about everything but didn’t refine anything for instance we got some dungeons but instead of new dungeons we got fractals and instead of new fractals we got raids then they nerfed the former two to try and shovel people in to test out the concept of raids. Content as well from temporary, to perm, hybrid shop(Peeps have to buy season 2 who weren’t logged in) then to expansions. There isn’t one solid bit in this game.

NCsoft may not be very involved but given the nature of gw2 over the years I’m sure they’ve learned from this game to help mold their others because you don’t see this sort of thing in their other titles.

Because their other titles are developed by different developers who have different ideas. BnS is a very typical koream MMO. It doesn’t do anything unique and it’s a standard quest hub grind. It is a very very different beast to GW2. NCSoft, a corporate entity who aren’t responsible for the actual development of the games (and who have very little input into what Arenanet does with GW2) aren’t learning anything from anywhere… Also Wildstar, developed by another NCSoft subsidiary, clearly takes a lot from GW2. A lot…
Aside from Wildstar, NCSoft don’t actually have any new MMO’s which could have “learned” from GW2.

I don’t think posting here is going to achieve anything. Nvidia will have created the list out of popular games, rather than out of any kind of endorsement. They will also have executed the testing themselves. I doubt Arenanet has anything to do with it.
Your time would be better spent contacting Nvidia about it. I’m not really sure what you could achieve through any kind of discussion with the forum community?

all you guys have to do is download windows bootcamp. runs way smoother

That’s not really an “all you have to do…” kind of thing. I personally play through bootcamp, but I have the HDD space to do so and I had a Windows license. It’s extra money and effort to be able to play the game which should be playable on OS X, since it is advertised as such. That’s not a solution at all.

And that was for the December 2nd update.

Skill effects can get stuck (and other effects). I once had the cool aura that shows up for a second when you level up stick on me for a while! Was quite cool running around looking like I was exploding into light, of course nobody else could see it. You can sometimes induce the effect with skills by interrupting/cancelling them at the right moment (someone in a dungeon showed me once! Was pretty cool). But that’s quite hard to pull of.

iMac Retina 5K for GW2?

FlamingFoxx.1305

Did I mention 5K?

What is say is that it is rather strange that Ambroze bought a new Mac and that GW2 crashes after login.

That said, GW2 crashes on LOTS of Macs nowadays. On my Mac, it is the ONLY game that crashes all the time.

Still a bit odd.

They specifically say they have a brand new 5K iMac. Your reply was in response to their comment and my accompanying one about lowering the resolution. So you didn’t have to specifically mention 5K, because we were already talking about a 5K iMac. If they had any other mac there wouldn’t be a need to lower the resolution and it would be a moot point.

GW2 has always crashed lots on OS X. Ever since the beta client for OS X was released people have been complaining on the forums about not being able to play or having the game crash frequently. There have been short reprieves where the number of crashes has lessened, but they’ve always been there. It’s not a new problem. (and not an acceptable problem either, obviously).

Make sure that in the graphics settings it is set to “native” sampling and not “sub sample”, because that would cause blurriness.

I am a little confused as to why you purchased a new monitor with such a low resolution though? Surely you could get higher resolution for cheaper? What is the screen size (in inches) it could just be that the screen is too large for such a low resolution resulting in things looking very blurry.

No 'join in' option in LFG

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Basically, “Join In” is a totally misleading way to describe this ‘feature’, it should be labeled

“put me in the same map copy as this member of the party as long as I’m in a different copy of that map already”

it also doesn’t actually move you to their location so you can them (in the usual meaning of the English word ‘join’) for God’s sake, so God help you if you’re joining a map like DS where pretty much every WP is contested.

At least when ZOS put this feature in ESO the game ported you to the right map copy from anywhere!

While that would be more convenient I imagine it comes with a whole host of other complex coding issues. e.g. does the game move you to their specific location, or to the nearest WP? How does the nearest WP get determined (you have to code that into the join function)? What happens if you haven’t travelled to where your party is (the code has to check for that)? etc. Basically you end up having to create a long chain of variables and checks.

logical story

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I agree with your idea of 1+1 =/= 2.
If the next dragon awakes we will all know we kill it. Perhaps a non logical story is the wrong idea, perhaps just a curveball.
We all go to the next dragon almost defeat him then he swoops up destroys a bunch of our forces and gets away and flies north/south and we pursue.
Something different then Cat and Mouse.

That is literally the definition of cat and mouse, and if you don’t end up killing the dragon in the end people will complain the story isn’t complete and that they didnt get what they paid for. Meaning that the end of the story is still going to be the exact same thing.
I’m not saying they can’t make the story interesting and left of field, they absolutely can, I just think there are specific ways to approach it and there are others to be avoided.

FlamingFoxx.1305

A brand new iMac… lower the resolution… This is odd…

5K is a very very high resolution. You’d be hard pressed to find a 5K monitor for sale out in the wild, so no it’s not an odd suggestion (new things often take MORE time to be supported as well… So having a “brand new” anything is no guarantee that something should work well). Game makers are still in the processing of supporting 4K, why would 5K be expected to work in games when apple is one of the few manufacturers who create a 5K display? The higher your resolution the more strain you’re putting on your CPU and GPU. 5K is a lot of strain.

First thing to try is this:

you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings.

To access this:
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.
2 Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard while clicking “Go” in the finder menu bar. A drop-down will appear.
3 While still holding down the “Option” key, click on “Library” in the “Go” drop-down.
4 Once in the Library folder click on Application Support > Guild Wars 2
5 Move the entire Guild Wars 2 folder to the trash and then empty the trash.

The next time you launch Guild Wars 2 it will recreate the recently deleted folder.

And if that doesn’t work then make sure you’ve tried restarting your computer, and then launch GW2 and just leave it for half an hour and see if anything happens. Just because you can’t see anything doesn’t mean the program isn’t doing anything.

logical story

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

The ending has to be logical. Logically, we will have to kill all of the dragons. We know this based on how Tyria and the dragons work. Just because that is the logical end doesn’t mean it is a bad or predictable ending. You don’t know what is going to happen in the story, you have a good idea of where it’s going to end up, but that is almost always the case with any story.

A story which has no logic and is full of chaos is a bad story because it is one that people cannot understand, cannot follow the trajectory of, and cannot draw connections between.

You absolutely can be creative even if the story is headed in a clear or logical place.

Legendary is getting buffs because they are giving ascended better stats because its too expensive to be only a smidgen higher than exotic.

When people get 4 precursors in a month and other players don’t even get exotics worth more than 20 gold in 3 years with same playing time then it’s a little stupid. I understand it’s RNG. But, they could make some adjustment.

Making it easy is not the goal. Making the total items required to make the precursor less than buying the precursor outright is the point. Not even halfway to the precursor and I could nearly buy the precursor with what I spend? Yeah, that’s not good.

I collect things and I’m OCD, if I put effort into it I want some sort of reward. Otherwise it’s pointless.

The point is that when you’re doing the collection for the precursor you’re not supposed to be buying everything. You’re supposed to be collecting it. It’s an alternative route for people who don’t have the gold to just buy one outright. I’m sympathetic to the fact that you didn’t realise that and have since spent an awful lot of gold, but that doesn’t mean you deserve to be reimbursed. Why not continue with it and just stop spending money to get everything? Plenty of players don’t have precursors or legendaries and are doing just fine without them (myself included). As you point out, RNG is RNG. You can play the market, or you can play the game.

Out of curiosity, has any Mac OS X user tried Parallels Desktop for Mac?

It supports 64 bit windows, allows you to boot into your mac operating system and you would be able to install 64 bit Guild Wars.

Its been a long time since I used Parallels, however just thinking, it could run Gw2 just as good as w.i.n.e. with the added bonus of accessing more memory due to 64bit support.

Unfortunately it is an additional cost so I am unwilling to purchase it just to test a theory as I do not play games on OSX. However if someone already uses parallels desktop or has access to it, I would be intrigued to find out how Gw2 performs with it.

While in theory parallels might allow you to access more memory and run the 64bit client, in reality your mac is now having to emulate the WHOLE windows OS, rather than just the bits and pieces that Cider emulates to enable the game to run. That means that on top of your CPU and GPU having to power OSX, they’re also having to power Windows, and then GW2 on top of that. No matter what way you spin it you’re going to get far worse performance. Parallels and VMware weren’t really designed for gaming and it’s doubtful they’ll ever be useful for it.

Well this thread doesn’t instill me with confidence. I’m glad I haven’t actually purchased the expansion yet.

From the thread, I gather I need to lower all the graphics settings to minimums to reduce crashes. Maybe you all could help me with another problem.

UI elements in the game (menus, minimap, chat log, etc.) are showing up incredibly small. I almost need a magnifying glass to read chat. I couldn’t find an option for scaling the UI under the UI options menu. Is it hidden somewhere else?

edit: I found UI scaling under the graphics options, but even at the largest setting, the UI elements are still very small (mostly a problem for the chat log).

There’s an option in the games settings menu, either in the main tab or the graphics tab I can’t recall which, and it allows you to set the UI to small, large, or larger. If you have a 5K iMac or a retina display on full resolution then the UI is going to be smaller (just as it would be on a windows computer with the same resolution). One solution would be to play the game in a lower resolution, which would make everything a little larger.

What Anet should have done is done their homework if they were going to go the lazy route and not make a native client and use aspyr as they are great with Mac client game porting. They do amazing work.

Aspyr is by no means a better option. A lot of their ports have gotten a bad response because they weren’t very well done, they’ve ended up pushing back release dates a number of times, and they have absolutely no experience porting an MMO which would require constant alterations, something they’re not likely to be able to do with the speed that Arenanet would need. They chose cider specifically because it shouldn’t require them to make any/many alterations for each update they push to work on both Windows and OSX. The reality of course is that the mac client is rubbish, but they still went with the best option. Well no, the best option would have been a native port, but that’s something they decided against. It’s important to note that around the time of release Anet would only have just been beginning to turn a profit, they wouldn’t have been in a position to hire a mac dev team so they went with the next best option.

They should be in a reasonably stable position now though… And it would definitely be in their interest to have a dedicated mac team. Native client or not.

Your 2011 iMac had a dedicated GPU (all old imacs had dedicated GPUs). The new 21.5 inch iMacs only have Intel integrated GPUs. So yeah, unfortunately while your new machine is in some ways far superior, it isn’t necessarily an all around upgrade. Your new machine has less graphics power for the game to work with, which is going to put a lot more strain on the CPU. In most cases this isn’t going to be a problem whatsoever and the CPU will handle things just fine, but for gaming, and especially for something like GW2, losing that dedicated GPU is going to have a negative impact on your experience.

Perhaps you earn your money with computer hardware and do know a lot more than me.

But I don’t think so. Clearly dedicated (vs integrated) GPU does not mean that per se it is better. From all that I can see those who analysed GPU performances found the “Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200” superior to the older dedecated one in the iMac 2011.

The quality of the of the graphic – as long as the computer does not crash – on the new Mac ist good (better than on a window laptop with Gforce 860M).

I thought that GW2 does not use GPU intensively but requires a lot of CPU power. Clearely the new Mac is far superior in this regard and has lots more ram.

The Mac crashes with GW2 after a while even when graphically the situation seems not demanding. I therefore assume that the program has some issues with something other that GPU-power.

I understand what you’re saying and you’re for the most part correct. However, the integrated Intel GPU’s don’t have any VRAM of their own, which means they’re sharing with the CPU’s RAM. In an already CPU intensive game that becomes a problem, because suddenly the graphics card doesn’t have its own RAM to fall back on. So while the integrated cards are in some respects more capable than the dedicated ones in the older macs, for example doing video or photo editing is going to work a lot better, its just not great for, or designed for, gaming. You could argue that a mac isn’t designed for gaming in the first place, but the lack of a dedicated GPU is a serious drawback.

First of all, quit all of those apps running in the background. If not just to make sure GW2 has ample resources available to it to speed things up (there’s a memory leak, it needs it).

Then your first port of call should be this:

you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings.

“The distance at which rendered objects transition through varying levels of detail.”

Changing the setting doesn’t make more or fewer objects render on screen, so you’re not going to suddenly see further in the distance if you turn it up to Ulta, it’s about the detail they render in, and the difference is most likely slight enough that you can’t really notice an observable change because the objects are far enough away.

Either that or it is in fact broken, but I would think a dev would have noticed at some point over the last three years if it were broken.

Yesterday I installed an new 21.5 inch iMac with retina display and in every (!) large event (Tequatel, Tarir, WVW zerks) I suffer crashes. Up to yestarday I used an 2011er iMac which was much more stabily running.

So, I also advocate for a better Mac-client performance.

After my game crashed and El Captain updated, I pretty much can’t play the game anymore, the client not even showing up even I tried to reinstall the game. Is it the Metal thing crashed it? Or Do I need to get Cider?

Metal has nothing to do with GW2, and the game runs through a cider wrapper by default. You can’t do anything to change that and you don’t need to do anything additional. At the top of the tech support forum is a sticky thread called “FAQ and sticky threads” In there is a mac troubleshooting threat. Look in there, you’ll hopefully find something that works.

Mac + screenshotting?

F6 is one of the current default keybinds for taking a screenshot.

Which will not work unless the user manually disables the special functions for each key on OSX and switches to standard keys…

CMD+SHIFT+4 allows you to click and drag the mouse to create a selection to screenshot. The actualy screenshot shortcut is CMD+SHIFT+3

64-bit on Mac: A solution.

You’re not really entitled to any kind of gem compensation for your personal choice to install 3rd party software.

Parallels might be a potential solution for some people, but a lot of macs won’t be able to reliably virtualise both Windows and run the game as well. That’s even more taxing on your computer than the cider client is.

It’s also MUCH more expensive than just running the game in Bootcamp, and has the exact same problems in terms of data and file sizing.

The reason most people don’t want to install GW2 via bootcamp is because they don’t want to pay for windows. Don’t want to have windows running on their mac. Don’t want to lose precious disk space to windows. This isn’t a solution for any of those problems. The only person this is a solution for is someone whose sole reason for not using bootcamp is because they don’t want to have to restart their computer and wait two minutes each time they want to play the game.

The only way mac users can play (for a few hours maximum before crash) is by setting everything to rotten potato settings. I’ve never been able to see this game run properly with sweet graphics on the mac client, a 3 YEAR OLD BETA that has no deadline whatsoever. God i’d be surprise if they are even working on it

Unless there’s a native Mac client that they haven’t released at all yet, there’s not really anything to work on. The whole appeal of Cider is that it’s a wrapper for Windows apps, so there’s no need to actually write a Mac version. Well, in theory, anyway…

According to Nvidia, Cider wont be supported or developed any longer. Our only options are to bootcamp or find someone to develop a working wine wrapper or even better a client that works. The latter I doubt will happen due to fact they arent even acknowledging this HUGE thread with more than 400 replies. Im looking into Crossover by Code Weavers but have sent a message to tech support to get in writing that my account and all that I worked on and money spent on the game will not be at risk of being banned.

You won’t be banned for using Crossover. Crossover and Cider are both based on wine. From their end they shouldn’t be able to see any difference between someone running the game on the mac beta, and someone running it through crossover. Crossover is doing exactly what Cider does, it is creating an environment in which the game can run. It isn’t interfering with the game files at all or interacting with them.

Mac 64bit Estimated time on a beta?

The Mac Beta runs through Cider. Cider is 32bit only. So there is no estimated time because with the current state of things it isn’t possible.

I’m about to try a Wineskin of the Windows 64-bit client, bypassing the Mac client completely. If this works and my crashes go away, I will report back here.

Wine doesn’t support 64bit on OSX. See my earlier post in this thread.

To my knowledge Wine can run 64 bit applications on OS X… They’re generally not supported by the community because they’re harder to get to work properly, but they can run.

Anet has the worst customer service I’ve ever seen. I really enjoyed the game, but the last couple of years and now this have really put a bitter taste to it. I can’t be alone in feeling that way, either.

That comments actually not that fair. Arenanet has really great customer support and they are always quick to try and help solve people’s problems. They have awful OS X/dev support though. Customer Support staff can’t be expected to somehow solve problems that all stem from Cider being awful, CS aren’t dev’s, they’re just people with a knowledge of how to work around common problems people face or who can fix account related issues. The issues with the OS X port aren’t things they can work around. The CS do their best :/

If you want to point fingers at anyone then point them at the devs and the higher ups who make decisions based on numbers and profits that lead to a lack of a better OS X client.

I think it was quite fair. Perhaps you’re specifically referring to tech support and the ticket system as the only outlet for customer service.

The developers have no input on how this issue is handled; why would I be upset with them? They are just doing their job. The silent treatment mac customers get is obviously a decision from high up the decision making tree. These people are the ones who shape the public face of the customer service and experience. They set the policy and the policy is for poor customer service and experience if you purchased for the mac.

Also, on the topic of cider being awful, that’s not really the customer’s issue directly. Internal industry issues are not really our concern. If they couldn’t keep providing a working product, they should have chosen to not sell it. I understand you’re trying to explain why they have a problem. I think we all understand it, but, again, not our problem. They need to either find a different solution or don’t sell something that doesn’t work.

My pure speculation on this is that they made a boardroom decision with accountancy spreadsheets in hand that it was more profit long and short term to sell a non-functional product and try to ride it out with various stalling methods and vague comments as a tactic than to risk losing the mac revenue stream by (temporarily?) discontinuing service.

Anyway, it’s terrible customer service in my opinion (and, I am sure they know it). Also, the mac client still crashes every 20 minutes. Any word about this beyond ‘we know it’s not great’ yet?

I completely agree with you. I was specifically referring to the tech support staff though. It wouldn’t really be fair for anyone to get angry with them or harass them because they’re not in charge of decisions and it’s not at all their fault that the game runs awfully.
But everything you’ve said is absolutely on point! Sorry if I didn’t communicate what I meant very well.

check out Ryzom and imagine that on a larger scale.
or don’t… enjoy your chains.
gg.

You’re talking about a far simpler game form 2004 running on an entirely different engine that clearly isn’t confined by the limits of DirectX… Apples and Oranges are not the same thing. Ryzom also isn’t a AAA game produced by a large development studio, nor is it a mainstream game. It is a niche game appealing to a niche group with niche interests.
Ryzom’s entire file base is contained within 13GB’s. That’s not a whole lot.. It’s far less of a complex game than GW2. The end use for GW2 has access to about 25+GB’s worth of data. The actual file base will be far far larger.
