[MAC] El Capitan 10.11

FlamingFoxx.1305

About week till new 10.11 release, so there is a question.
Anyone tried run Guild Wars 2 under El Capitan gold master?
Faster, slower, bugs, workarounds?

GW2 shouldn’t be any faster or slower in El Capitan: there is very little difference between Yosemite and El Capitan. While El Capitan introduces Metal that will only have an impact on OpenGL games and not GW2 which is running through a cider wrapper. It’s quite possible that bugs may be introduced, so I would advise not updating to El Capitan until after it has actually been released and people have had a chance to test it out (and for Arenanet to possibly patch it).

Installing a beta OS (or even the Gold Master) isn’t really advisable unless you’re doing so to test software or are a developer. Things can still go quite wrong. Things still go wrong with final released: I remember a couple of years ago (okay more than a couple) Apple released an update to either Snow Leopard or Lion (don’t quite recall) which ended up corrupting some people’s systems and forcing them to do a complete reinstall (losing all their things if they didn’t have a backup). So yeah. Always wait a couple of days at least xD.

I Could Outrun a Centaur!

It annoys me mostly because they can’t even pronounce centaur correctly. It gives me flashbacks of the GW2 manifesto video with Colin smiling beautifully and saying ‘sen’ ‘tar’ over and over again. Repeat after me: ‘sen’ ‘tore’ (rhymes with door).

Just to add to what Talek has said. It’s possible that it is something to do with the Nvidia card. So you could try playing the game using the Intel graphics card. However you would have to download third party software to do this as OSX doesn’t have any way to force the use of the intel card (though you can force it to use the nvidia card).

Mac doesn't start when connecting through 3G

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

This is more likely to be caused by a limitation on your iPhone for broadcasting a 3G/4G connection. I don’t think Arenanet can fix that for you. Probably best not to run the game on 3G or 4G anyway. You would go through data very very quickly and it would end up being incredibly expensive for you.

I play on a laptop with an old Radeon 6750M and can play the game with high settings just fine. There are a lot of areas where I have to turn down to medium to stay over 30FPS, but that’s partly because the game has become more poorly optimised over time. My point being that you don’t need an $1800 laptop with a gtx870 to play the game well.

You might want to look at buying a second hand machine that is maybe one or two years old. You can probably get a reasonably high end machine that way and not have to break the bank to do so.

The 15" MBP I mentioned has a 2.5ghz quad core i7. That, with the more than decent graphics card, should run this game extremely well. Right?[/quote]

On Windows yes it would run the game extremely well. On OSX you’re going to come across the standard performance drop and frequent crashes that everyone experiences on the Mac Beta client. Those issues can’t be solved by a more powerful machine, they’re due to the client being a cider wrapper and aren’t just going to go away. The game still runs in 32bit so it can only make use of 4GB of RAM and both the CPU and GPU are being forced to run both the wrapper and the client itself – which is emulating DirectX in an OS that only has OpenGL.

Actually the iMac is built out of laptop components and is essentially very very similar to the MBP. The AMD card on the new 15" MBP’s is a bit more powerful than the NVIDIA card on Figlilly’s iMac. You should get quite good performance playing the game. I use a late 2011 MBP and get alright performance with all graphics set to high (if I turn things down it runs smoothly).

Playing in OSX is going to limit how well the game runs though. It will crash. You will not get as good performance as you would running the game in bootcamp. Nonetheless it should still be very pretty

The mac version from 1 year ago has much better performance. All their PC-only update were made without parallel improvements to the mac version.

Actually a very large number of the updates over the past year have actually made PC performance worse. Any update that has improved PC performance has also improved Mac performance (even if by a tiny bit). But with a lot of the LS S2 updates and the introduction of the new, very CPU intensive, zone performance has gone down quite a bit for everyone. The new FoV sliders were also a big culprit, that update reduced performance on both OSX and Windows.

So yea, the mac client from 1 year ago had better performance. As did the Windows client from 1 year ago.

The core game is still NOT A NATIVE BETA on the mac. So why even consider buying the expansion… I’m not. If your on a mac, it’s almost a waste of money for how terrible the game runs through the cider port.

While that may be true not everyone has the option of buying a windows machine or running in boot camp. I don’t mean this in a nasty way, but your comment isn’t really helpful with racheloflite’s problem and in fact is completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

In future I would recommend not using the email address provided by your Internet Service Provider as your personal email. You would be far better off creating a gmail account (or something similar) to use for internet accounts. You could always set up a redirect so any emails sent to those gmail go to your ISP provided email if you really want – but at least that way you don’t run into this problem any time you change ISP.

@racheloflite If 32bit Windows 7 will work then that will still be a great boost. The game runs in 32bit anyway, the only thing you’ll miss out on is if your computer has more than 3GB of RAM it won’t make use of it (though 3 is still ample for playing the game).

I wish you the best of luck with your situation! I hope it sorts itself out soon and that you manage to play HoT.

I personally have Win7 installed via bootcamp with 100GB of space allocated. That’s enough for me to run GW2 and two other 20ishGB games (with 10GB left over). So Qugi is right, the OS needs around 25-30GB (windows 8 and 10 most likely need less), and then another 25-35 for GW2. 60 will be enough I believe.

There’s a support document (in the support section of the GW2 website, not the forums) that references which ports you need open on your router – it may be that whatever port the TP uses is blocked? If you have firewall turned on in your OSX settings you could try turning that off. And also, what version of OSX are you running?

I’d recommend sending a support ticket about this. The staff should have more of an idea what could be causing this.

What if you nuke the folder, then restart your computer, and then boot the game and gem store. I recall a long time ago some issue with the gem store not working through multiple sessions, so perhaps the computer needs to be restarted, or at least logged out of, in order for the wipe to take proper effect? Probably won’t work but worth a try.

Apple only supports the latest 2 versions (I think) of their OS. Arenanet list 10.8 as the minimum requirement precisely because anything lower is no longer actively maintained by Apple.

HoT may well work on your 10.7 machine, Arenanet just won’t say if it will or not because they aren’t supporting it. If they said to you ‘yes it will work’ then they would be in hot water if something stopped working for you. That’s why they won’t say it.

If you can’t update your machine then unfortunately you’re going to be running on a machine that legally is unsupported. That doesn’t mean a whole lot though. You most likely will still be able to run HoT (though probably not very well considering your machine is old).

I repeat again – 10.8 is the lowest currently supported OS. They’re not going to comment on your use of 10.7 because it isn’t supported by Apple (as in actively receiving updates). Each new version of OSX brings updates to how the software runs, it isn’t beneficial for a game to support too many OS versions because then they have more things to test and more things that can go wrong. That’s all it means – they’re not actively testing the game on 10.7 and you won’t receive support if something does go wrong. You may however be able to play the game.

My suggestion: Wait until HoT comes out. When it comes out buy it and see if it runs satisfactorily on your machine. If it does not then ask Anet for a refund or upgrade your machine (though I understand that you’re saying you can’t).

Playing GW2 or most any other game on a laptop will cause the fans to run. At least on any apple laptop they do (e.g. my 2011 MBP). It isn’t great for the computer to run super hot, but it shouldn’t be overly harmful. Make sure that you’re giving the laptop as much opportunity to cool down as possible though. Play it on a stand if possible, make sure the room you’re in isn’t too hot, and make sure you don’t play for super long sessions.

Make a copy of your gw2.dat file then delete your GW2 folder (put the backup .dat on your desktop by itself or something and delete the original). Redownload GW2 from the official website and let the installation start. Once it has started downloading the whole game again you can quit it and put your gw2.dat that you copied into the new GW2 folder. Then see if the game runs. That should tell you if it is an issue with your gw2.dat (all the game files) or an issue with the launcher.

And how exactly does he make more sense than any of the other suggestions?

He knows about us because he is a spy, but he’s a minor NPC with no importance to the plot. It would be incredibly bad storytelling if it were him. Not to mention Marjory would have been aware of it were a Charr who had held her from behind…

Perhaps, but an unknown NPC as one who is behind everything, in my opinion, makes more sense then a well known NPC.

Perhaps, however, if he can change appearance, it is possible the said Charr is either a mesmer, or has some other abilities that are yet unknown.

Ok but what somehow makes this random NPC a more viable choice than any other random NPC, especially some random Order of Whispers NPC.

It’s an incredibly bad mystery if it turns out to be something players cannot guess or provide evidence towards.

There is a known bug with Trahearne which may cause the Eye to be invulnerable. However, the Eye is supposed to be invulnerable at times, you have to meet specific conditions/do things to remove the invulnerability. So read up and figure out which was happening…

If you want to report a bug do so in the bug section of the forum or using the in game bug report tool.

Unfortunately Anet are really lax about fixing bugs with the original parts of the game. Even very close to release there are a lot of things that were never fixed. You’re going to have to decide if you want to keep playing or if it’s too frustrating for you.
