In resent days the rumor that Apple may be switching all their new systems to the ARM processor has pop up on the internet again if this happens say goodby to GuildWars2 on any new Macs.

There would be absolutely no sense in Apple shifting to ARM processors for their computers… The internet is full of ‘rumours’. Very few of them turn out to be true.

With today release of Final Fantasy 7 on IOS I don’t see any reason GiuldWars1 couldn’t be ported over to the mobile platform. The first PC I played the game on had fare less power then today’s mobile devices. This would bring new life to that game and generate more income for Anet. They are charging $16 for FF7, I’d gladly pay that much if not more to be able to play GW1 on my phone or ipad.

final fantasy 7 is a game that was on the first generation of sony playstation. it had the graphics of a gameboy color. guild wars was released eight years later to my knowledge. with a much better engine and graphics capability. point being, playing final fantasy 7 on an iphone 6 would be like playing pokemon red on a game boy. current iphones have vastly more processing power than PS1’s, and can run a game like FF7 very smoothly. Maybe not so much guild wars, or it would, and my phone would blow up after a week.

Not to.mention the size of GW1. I think its around 5-6 gig. I know phones are getting big memory these days, but not everyone springs for the 32gig + option, by the time you add you music and apps, you would be out of space. Nit to mention the heat you phone would produce. If I play asphalt 8 on my windows phone for longer that 10 mins, I’m willing to bet I could cook an egg on it. That can’t be good for the phone.

Also, I’d rather they focus on GW2. I still play GW1 and love it. But it’s done. It will be where it in now. PC only, till the servers are switched off.

5-6 gigs if we’re only talking about Prophecies. I think the entire run of GW (including Beyond) was about 15-20.

I think GW would go free-to-play before we see it on another platform.

Nope. It’s 4.39GB’s for Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and EoTN. Source – my GW1 dat file.

Thanks for the tips Odesseus. On autodetect it had all of those turned off but Depth Blur (which I now turned off) .. so I will test it with that off. Funny it just crashed with me popping map up just before I came to see your message.

What resolution are you running the game at? If you’re running it at max resolution then that’s probably why it is crashing.

0 Ping? What arcane magic is this!?

Also, I’m 100% sure I’ve seen posts complaining about UI size under 4K rez. So it does “work”, for windows at least.

The 5K iMac is running at a resolution higher than 4K and it’s running in a Cider wrapper – so it’s most likely not a case of being unsupported, but rather just that the wrapper (rather than the game) can’t or isn’t programmed to cope with it.

Alpha releases come before beta releases – they’re usually not ever seen by consumers. We get to see the beta, and then after beta’s you have the final release. Alpha = first iteration. Beta = second iteration (this is a simplification).

HoT, Australia and hard copies.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

FlamingFoxx.1305

I somewhat doubt that a physical copy of HoT would only be $50AUD. It’s more likely to still cost you around 70AUD, especially from EB who pretty much always overcharge. You also don’t need to buy the expansion using gems, you can just do a straight purchase from the GW2 website.

As for LoL not making you pay conversion, I’d imagine it’s because they actually have an Oceanic server and most probably operate their business quite differently to Arenanet who are specifically located in the US. Just looking at Wikipedia, Riot have offices in St. Louis, Dublin, Berlin, Seoul, São Paulo, Istanbul, Moscow, Sydney, and Taipei. So that is almost certainly why.

Was this Zone Portal " always here?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

My personal theory is that it originally led to the Tengu starter zone, before that race was scrapped. That area of the map already has 3 starter areas and two 15-25 areas all close together. imo it would be a logical place to put it.

I don’t quite understand how that would make sense? It is north of Brisban Wildlands which is quite far from the Dominion of Winds, which has always been where it is – in what was Sanctum Cay in GW1. You can find proof of that in the map in the beginning of Ghosts of Ascalon which was released just over a year before the beta for GW2.

You shouldn’t need to do a clean install of the game. At the very least you should be able to make a copy of the Gw2.dat file (inside the package contents of the Gw2.app) so that you don’t have to redownload the entire game again. The only reason you would ever need to do a complete clean install would be if the .dat file were corrupted.

Step 2 should actually solve the problem on its own.

FlamingFoxx.1305

I agree the gw2.dat file is the tough one. I tried to move via flash drive to wifes laptop last year, had to use WinRAR or 7zip to cut the huge file into smaller pieces because win XP and vista was not able to move then entire file to a flashdrive. This was not because flashdrive didn’t have the capacity, earlier versions of windows have a cap on file size capacity on flash drive. I think it I had to make the files under 2 or 4 gigs? I don’t think this is an issue on win 8.1 and for sure is not an issue on win 10 (dunno about win 7).

Depending on what your upgrading from, you MAY have to do a clean install, despite what gothicus says. If your on xp or vista you WILL have to do clean install. From win 7 or win 8.1 you won’t “need” to, personally, I will be doing clean install.
I have a HDD I am using now for storage that I’ll move important files onto, and then once official release of win 10 I’ll do fresh install on the SSD, then move the gw2 folder back to the SSD.

Remember whichever way you do, DO backup your important stuff before you upgrade/install (pictures, teamspeak identity, browser url’s, whatever) I had the luxury of flashdrive transfer for some of these things from old system when I put win10 beta on this system in December…I’d have been very lost if I had not.

It’s nothing to do with your version of windows. It is based on the format of the USB that you’re transferring the file to. A lot of USB’s come in FAT32 format, which has a maximum of 4GB per file. You can store more than 4GB on those USB’s, provided they are different files. a 4.2GB file won’t fit on a USB that is formatted FAT32.

You need to format your USB as either ExFAT or NFTS (or HFS+ but that will only work on macs) in order to put a file that is more than 4GB on it.

GW2 is basically just two or three files. The main file is the gw2.dat its around 20GB and contains all of the games files within it – you’d have to back that one up. The other important file is the gw2.exe which is just a couple of mb’s so you may as well copy that as well. Anything else isn’t important (there will most likely be a gw2.log in there)

Why don't you add character voice variants?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

There’s already a huge cost associated with voice acting.

Single player RPG’s can often afford to get all of the lines for main characters done by 3 or 4 voice actors because a) the main character often doesn’t actually have a ton of lines, and/or b) all of the voice acting is one off. Once the game is out they don’t need to worry about being able to book those voice actors in to do more content or being able to afford it.

Anet has already had a lot of trouble getting voice actors back due to scheduling problems, which is why Destiny’s Edge weren’t very present in LS S1/most of S2. It’s not monetarily feasible for them to get the personal character voiced that many times – considering they already have 5 races with male and female voices for both.

I would like some major gay male npcs

in Lore

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I do think this game and the community should avoid trying to forcefully insert lgbt/minority characters for the sake of a ‘tickbox’.

That being said, a gay character should be someone where it makes sense and is not “oh! btw here is a gay guy! aren’t we so progressive!” Plenty of gay characters are overly portrayed as such to the point where it is their identity, which is stupid. I am heterosexual, does that define me? Not really, no one ever says to me ‘OMG that is SO hetero!’ In general media whenever a gay character has been attempted they follow this general gist;

Lesbians are either the plaid shirt, earthy masculine woman or ridiculously attractive.

Gays are either super camp/flamboyant or massively tortured.

Either way they are defined by their sexuality. Which is not really the kind of character I would want to see.

I would prefer they design a character that is real and makes sense, where his sexuality only defines love interests rather than their personality and struggles. It should never be a ‘tickbox operation’, it should be done because it works.

You have no idea how ridiculous what you just said is. There are plenty of gay women who are masculine or are conventionally ‘attractive, just as there are plenty of gay men who are flamboyant or who are tortured (you try not being tortured when you grow up in a world that deprives you of the same rights as everyone else?). To deny those people representation simply because you personally interpret it as pandering to a political agenda is not ok. We need more representation, not less or specifically codified representation. Nothing Arenanet has done has been a ’tickbox operation’. It’s inclusivity because they as a company believe in inclusivity. You are only able to perceive it as a tickbox operation because it isn’t normative in the media.

Do you look at hetero relationships in the game and go ‘oh well they’re just too conventionally hetero, they’re obviously pandering to the hetero agenda’. No you don’t, so don’t do it to LGTBQ representation.

Also, asking for gay characters where their sexuality isn’t their identity is also kind of ridiculous. For a lot of LGTBQ people their sexuality does become a huge part of their identity and daily life because it is non-normative and we live in a world where non-normative people are underrepresented. You are far more self aware of your own sexuality when 90% of people and relationships portrayed in the media don’t represent you…

SteamOS (Linux) port

Thinking that SteamOS is going to surpass OSX is ridiculous. Mac’s are used as industry standard machines in most creative industries and are also consumer based machines. Linux is and always has been niche, SteamOS is even more niche since it appeals specifically to Linux games. That is a very small market.

[Mac] Crashes are an important to fix

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

The game is running through a Cider wrapper which can’t deliver the performance that the game needs. There isn’t really a magic way for them to stop the crashes. The game has become more intensive on Windows, and as a result it crashes on the OSX client because the wrapper (and the fact that the app isn’t native) prevents the game from properly accessing the necessary computing resources.

Just Completed Personal Story... WHAT???

in Living World

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

The thing that I don’t get, is why would they bother to give me the final chapter of Season 2? I didn’t even get the parts before it, just the ending. This makes literally zero sense to a player who doesn’t supplement the game with forums/wiki/youtube. It feels really bad.

Here’s what I think happened in your case:

  • You logged into GW2 sometime between January 13 and January 27 (the date when episode 8 released and the end of the two week “free unlock” period)
  • You completed your Personal Story six months later
  • The content guide looked for the next available story in your Story Journal. Since you probably don’t have any other episodes from Season 2 unlocked it put you on Episode 8.

I’d need to see a screenshot to be absolutely sure, but that’s likely what happened.

The good: You got a free episode
The bad: You played that episode out of linear order and it confused you

We certainly can message this better in the game, so I’ll be having some conversations about how to change this behavior.

Even if OP had been able to start from the beginning of Season 2 they wouldn’t have had a clue what was going on. They would still have been thrust into a situation with brand new characters they hadn’t met before but who were treating them as if they had. Yeah OP was in a worse situation for just having the last chapter of LS2, but the fact that not a single new player is going to know anything about LS1 means you have a whole lot of new players going on who are going to be incredibly turned off by the fact that there is a whole lot of story that is inaccessible to them.

“The bad: You played that episode out of linear order and it confused you”
That is going to be the situation for everyone who missed out on LS1, because guess what, that means they’re playing the story out of linear order (because a large chunk of time/story is inaccessible to them) and every single one of them is going to be confused. You guys screwed up.

Windows 10 Compatible?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

It will be compatible, but you will not get any extra performance out of directx12.

Uhhh… this game is still on DirectX 9! Literally any change should boost performance, since it’s built on an API that was designed for Windows XP.

So, will we be getting DirectX 12 support, by any chance? Blizzard said that several of their games might be updated to DX12 in the near future, depending on the adoption rate of Windows 10 (they didn’t say which games.) GW2 could definitely use an update to its engine. It honestly needed to be updated years before GW2 was even released; even now, this game can bring a $10,000 PC to its knees, giving 15 FPS or less even in starter zone events like the Svanir Shaman event.

Very few people have computers that are DX12 compatible. It would be a waste of money for them to spend all of their resources making the game DX12 compatible. DX11 sure, FFXIV just did that, but DX12 is incredibly unlikely.

It’s not likely. Arenanet haven’t made a native client because it would require the hiring of staff who actually have the ability to do so and it would require them to simultaneously manage a game in DirectX and OpenGL. They’re probably decided that it is far more financially viable for them to use a Cider port so that they don’t really have to do anything on the OSX client…

ok I have all the requirements for HoT but the OS can someone give me some help Penel, and FlamingFox said I might be able to play HoT I need to know if anyone has done this with the game here or any other game out there? I really want to get this game so bad.

The thing is, if you’re already able to run the GW2 program and have it open and fully functional, then nothing is going to stop you from being able to play HoT. The game will still execute in the exact same way, and the base elements of HoT will be loaded onto everyone’s .dat regardless of whether or not they buy it. So you will absolutely be able to play HoT (I think), the idea is that it may just run a little slower if your computer doesn’t meet the minimum requirements. If the only requirement you aren’t meeting is the OS, then I don’t think it will matter at all. You should theoretically be able to buy HoT when it comes out, see if it runs, and if it doesn’t run just ask for a refund. Anet are usually pretty good with refunds.

The newest Macbook Pro has an AMD graphics card (which is interesting because the previous generation was NVIDIA, and then before that it was AMD). However, all the iMac’s have NVIDIA graphics cards. So it’s kind of a mixed bag :S

Some answers would be all the more be welcomed as Transgaming just announced they sold Cider to NVIDIA:
https://www.transgaming.com/news/nvidia-acquire-transgaming-s-cross-platform-portability-technology?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TransGaming+%28TransGaming+Inc.%29

NVIDIA announced nothing solid about continuing Cider:
http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2015/06/11/nvidia-gameworks-studio/

I don’ t want to sound gloomy, but even if NVIDIA is unlikely to stop Cider on short term, the possible end of Cider on a longer term would imply the end of that flawed experience that is the Mac Client of GW2.

Anet, the Mac users have played the patience game long enough.
Is a native Metal client to be developed or should we quit as soon as we know NVIDIA’s plans for Cider?

I may be wrong but reading that NVIDIA has simply bought the rights to Cider’s technology – they don’t now own Cider…
Also NVIDIA wouldn’t be likely to axe Cider as a way of playing games on OSX because macs primarily (if not all of them?) use NVIDIA graphics cards. It wouldn’t be very smart for them to make having an NVIDIA graphics card less appealing to mac users or to apple.

Bootcamp can run either a 32bit or 64bit version of Windows. It just depends on which you install. I play GW2 using bootcamp and a 64bit version of Windows 7. I used to use 32bit windows 7 via bootcamp which also worked well, it’s just a bit better with 64bit since it can use all of my RAM.

Pretty bad when the plant people look more like human anatomy than the humans.

YES. I only play Sylvari males because the human males have such dreadful anatomy. They are barrel bodies. They’re supposed to be muscular I suppose but the proportions don’t actually match that. Their waits should be thinner than their chests (which they aren’t really), and they don’t really have hips. It looks so awful.

If you purchase something from a store and they had a sale the day after you would not be entitled to a refund or compensation. You made a decision to purchase said item, and then a sale happened. You weren’t ripped off.

You aren’t entitled to a sale. It doesn’t matter if you waited for one and it didn’t come – the reality is that it did come and you just chose to purchase the item beforehand. That was your informed decision and you did so fully aware that the item could go on sale at a future point.

It’s no different with a digital item. You made the choice to buy something. You’re not entitled to compensation just because it went on sale after you purchased it. If you followed that logic then people would be perpetually getting refunds when sales happened and stores would probably just stop having sales…

As annoying as it is, Evermore is right. Playing GW2 in bootcamp is incredibly smooth. It’s a far better experience and in my opinion worth having to boot up into windows just to play the game.

BEFORE you try Sammael’s suggestion, which will take a long time, try this instead:

you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings.
To access this:
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.
2 Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard while clicking “Go” in the finder menu bar. A drop-down will appear.
3 While still holding down the “Option” key, click on “Library” in the “Go” drop-down.
4 Once in the Library folder click on Application Support > Guild Wars 2
5 Move the entire Guild Wars 2 folder to the trash and then empty the trash.
The next time you launch Guild Wars 2 it will recreate the recently deleted folder.
