How will the new map effect 100% world completion?

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Apparently the Arah level 80 zones don’t have heart points, so since this zone is a new level 80 zone (after the weekend anyway) it probably won’t have new hearts. But PoI’s and Vistas surely it will (hopefully).

My guess is that it tacks on to Map Completion and that anyone who previously had 100% will suddenly find themselves without. It wouldn’t make sense for them to retain 100% and considering that map exploration and completion is such a big part of the game (for some people anyway) it would be weird if this didn’t count.

So yeah, my opinion – it will count and those with 100% will suddenly find themselves with 98% or something.

Our Elemental Pets

I use Glyph of elementals as my elite and these are my thoughts/observations:
I don’t think they have a standby mode, they have an aggro range that is similar or larger to that of most enemies and they will run off to attack regardless of what you’re doing.
My elemental usually attacks the first enemy I have attacked, if I switch targets they tend to keep attacking the one they started with, which is fine by me xD.

I kind of think that is the point though, they’re intended to be pulled out when you’re heading into a boss battle/large battle as something to mitigate damage and give you a bit of extra help. They only last 60 seconds, so it’s not as if they’re designed to run around with you (sort of wish they would though, would be pretty cool, even if it duplicates Ranger functions).

I’m going to give you a really simple answer for this one: The Pale Tree is not a Sylvari (her avatar is not Sylvari either, it’s just slightly Sylvari-ish which she does because it makes it easier for the Sylvari to view her in a motherly way I guess?)

I can understand you wanting to be able to achieve something like this though and why it gets annoying. You only have to take one look at Zoja and compare her to EVERY single other Asura to realise she hardly looks like them.. Caithe also has a really strange face/markings compared to other Sylvari. I understand Anet wanting to make them stand out, but it does make people feel as though their own choices are limited (which they are in a lot of ways, hopefully later expansions bring more customisation)

In GW1 the Luxons had Siege turtles with gigantic cannons on their backs. Despite this they were still on pretty even footing with the Kurzicks who had plant based Juggernauts
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Kurzick_Juggernaut

I think my point is that you can’t look at guns as functioning the same way as in the real world, they’re not necessarily any more or less effective than other weapons. I mean, if you wanted to apply real world logic then we should be able to one shot everything, because let’s be realistic, if I hack at something with a sword or put a bullet in something, it’s going to die xD.

Hate to burst your bubble but the client is not great. There are many crashing errors now, a lot more work needs to be done.

Crash errors seem to be very machine specific though.
Playing on my MBP and iMac I’ve actually only had one crash and the performance has been great (with the exception of Halloween lag due to high server load).

So yeah, there is a lot of work to be done and it isn’t perfect, but it’s very close to it for a lot of us xD

Full System Freeze

FlamingFoxx.1305

The wonderful thing about macs. As a late 2007:
Specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP16. It’s the MA878LL w/ 4G Ram running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

However, as stated, my machine is not supported hardware and I’m not actually looking for “the right answer”, because as FlamingFoxx suggests, I may just be out of luck. I’m just wondering if there’s some video/audio configuration settings I can tweak with to try out anything.

For instance, I had the game running on a nice relaxing sunday for an entire day and not a single system freeze (though it was dropping connection in storyline instances — different issue altogether though). Today, I’m jumping up a tower and it freezes up after 30 minutes of play. It could have to do with view distance, particles, hell, at this point I wouldn’t even rule out some bad audio call — (though if that causes a full system freeze I don’t know what it’d be doing).

I know the real fix is to get a mac that meets specs, but with the new 27" going for near 2k at the low end, and the system running great for everything else, it’s quite a hefty price-tag to play one game. But if the mtd3d=0 setting stabilized my system so it only crashes randomly every other day, there must be something else to tweak that makes it crash even less.

Again, my concern isn’t the crash as much as it’s a full system freeze. I see other people with below minimum specs reporting crashes all the time. My concern is having to pull the plug each time. It’s a transgaming wrapper — maybe there’s even a config setting to run it in some kind of “safe” mode?

Well Mountain Lion actually sandboxes apps I think, so it seems like it must be a hardware related crash, if it was just the app then just the app should crash?

I’m running GW2 on a mid 2011 macbook pro 15, on auto-detect on and with MTD3D on value 0 and the memory value set to 1024 (tried 512, didnt work). i still have low fps when playing, sometimes when im on a small map it still has a bit of fps lag which is VERY noticeable when walking around, my character will do small “skip” every 1 second and it is very irritating. i really want to know if this is a client problem or is just the fact that macbooks are useless for gaming, even with above recommendation specs.

in any case my mac specs are:
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

You have a slightly better MBP than me (I have the 6750M with 512mb) and the only other difference is that I’m running Mountain Lion. I have no stutter problems anymore though, once I set MTD3D to 0 mine ran really smoothly. Try doing an SMC reset?

Cross server Dungeon Grouping interface

in Suggestions

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I realise this has probably been done to death but I thought I would just throw in another opinion.

It is getting really tiring not being able to do the dungeons (story mode and explorable mode) because of a lack of people around or lack of interest in the dungeons.

Anet has put SO much work into the dungeons and they are a great mode of story telling. I would really love to be able to experience all of the Destiny’s Edge storyline, but as it is I’m level 60 and I’ve only been able to play Ascalon Catacombs.

Since there is a storyline to them I want to do them in order, I know the higher level dungeons are a lot more active, but trying to find a group for Cadecus Manor is proving near impossible. It doesn’t matter if try picking up a group in Queensdale or even in Lions Arch, there either are no people on the map or nobody at all wants to do it.

I have a great guild but it’s understandable that not a lot of them want to help out with story mode of dungeons since they’ve all either done them or are focused on doing ‘endgame’ content. I DON’T want to switch servers because I love my guild and I’ve come with them all the way from GW1 and even with swapping servers there is absolutely no guarantee that the server you swap to will be any better.

The only real solution I can see to this is to create a dungeon grouping interface, since turning them into soloable dungeons would most likely not work well at all, and if you’re going to do that then it probably needs to be a cross-server interface as well so that we actually have a decent player pool.

I’m desperately hoping that this or something like it will be implemented in the future.

- From someone who really wants to experience the gameplay that has had so much work put into it!

I kind of hope they bring back the same kind of PvP style that we had in GW1 with Fort Aspenwood and the Jade Quarry (and also the Alliance Battle maps).

They were GREAT PvP formats and they are almost an inbetween to WvW and sPvP. It was really awesome to be able to play a PvP mode where there was actually some strategy even though the people on your team were just randoms, and with JQ and FA you actually felt like you had a purpose to your fighting rather than just ‘TAKE OUT THOSE 8 PLAYERS!’

From memory they were actually teams of 8, but somehow it felt like a whole lot more and I imagine it would work if you scaled the size up a bit more to accommodate between 16 and 25 people, or in mimicking WvW had three teams of 8?

I use 1680×1050 fullscreen resolution, so retina is irrelevant.

Except that the pixel density is still much higher so even though it is only rendering at 1680×1050 it still has to render with all of it’s pixels which takes a whole lot more effort than something which has a native display of 1680×1050. Also, if you’re running GW2 in 1680×1050 then the actual computer itself is still running in a higher resolution and is therefore still taking up large amounts of resource, especially with how Apple has chosen to run the Retina Displays.

I am on retina MacBook Pro, and I have it set at 256 too (intel graphics is 512mb), so I set it manually to 1024 and I see no difference.

You have to take into account the ridiculous pixel density and resolution of the retina display, the graphics card is probably already pushing itself while you play, so you can open up GW2 and tell it it’s allowed to use more Vram, but the system is probably already making use of it, explaining why you see absolutely no change.

Thanks FlamingFoxx,

I read about that fix and was just about to try it. I was a little worried about how it would affect my system. Should I back up my files before attempting it? Is there a chance it could cause problems to my system or any installed programs?

Changing the MT3D number shouldn’t have any negative consequences whatsoever.
The file is the Guild Wars 2 config file and as such it will only change how Guild Wars 2 runs.
It is also worth noting that the original value was 0, it is only recently that Anet changed it to 4, which they did because it improves graphics. So in reality all you are doing is reverting it back to it’s old state. What that does mean however is that later updates to the client might mean you need to manually change it back to 0 again.

If you are worried at all and you want to be cautious I suggest you copy your Guild Wars 2 app to the desktop so that if something goes wrong (which it shouldnt) you can just drag the copy you made back into the applications folder and everything will go back to normal

They aren’t going to release a native client. I’m quite certain they just don’t have the human resources to dedicate to coding a completely native client. Especially consider that this transgaming cider client actually works really really well on macs that meet the requirements.

GW2 makes heavy use of GPU and CPU so yes updating your graphics card will make a difference, but the simple matter of the fact is that if you don’t have an i5 or i7 processor then your’re probably going to run into issues.

If you can run the game on Snow Leopard then that is great, do it. The only reason they don’t support Snow Leopard is because Apple only support their latest two releases, which are Lion and Mountain Lion, so they aren’t going to put even more resource in trying to ensure it runs on an outdated OS.

The player from my guild ended up having to leave and I did manage to get through after a while by looking up video walkthroughs online and trying the combinations that others had on their stones, which was actually quite difficult because I couldn’t find any where anyone had the same left hand symbol as me.
But yeah, so I did manage to get through in the end after a lot of trial and error, but it is quite clearly bugged

Weapon Upgrades

FlamingFoxx.1305

I sort of agree and but sort of disagree.
I feel like for me in GW1 this was one of the elements I didn’t really grasp until I had finished the game, by which point it mattered very little.
There are a lot of players like me who take time to get their heads around all the more intricate aspects of gameplay and mechanics.
Weapon and armour modification is something that you can’t really do until you’re at max level because before then you are continuously changing equipment as you find better loot and you level up.

I think that is really the main reason they haven’t implemented a system like GW1s.
Getting to level 20 in Factions and Nightfall didn’t take long at all, at which point you could figure out the weapons and armour systems and make something that works well with your build (Prophecies as a bit of a different story xD). But GW2’s huge level ramp makes something like that way too annoying for anyone who isn’t at endgame.

Even now, I find myself in constant need of trans-stones simply to keep the armour I like the look of while getting the improved stats of new loot as I level up >.>

Fully separate PvE from PvP

in Suggestions

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

They aren’t forcing you into anything?
sPvP is the only true PvP and that is 100% optional. Yes there are achievement rewards for it. But there is nothing in game from forcing you to do them and they are separated into a PvP specific tab.

As for WvW, it is as much PvE as it is PvP. If you feel compelled to map complete WvW zones like I do then just monitor the WvW status and pick a time when your world is doing really well, then you don’t have to worry about the enemy players.

And there is absolutely NOTHING forcing you to PvP at end game? end-game items belong in PvE. Anet has specifically separated your PvE gear from your PvP gear specifically to that end…

If you would like to explain what specific elements of PvE you think are tied to PvP then I would be most interested to hear. Because I am yet to really come across anything forcing me to PvP…

Elite Weapon Skills

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I’m not sure about them adding more skills onto our bar because as a person with smallish hands, even though I’ve rebound all my skills to easier to get to keys, having more makes it just that bit easier to completely lose track of where my hands are xD!

That aside, I’m not completely against it. I think ONE more skill would be great, either weapon or utility, both would be good options.
But I don’t think I want another elite, or weapon specific elite. I find that because of their longish cooldowns I don’t use them a whole lot in battle because I feel like I’m meant to be waiting for some point where they will really save me.

I think access to another utility would be great, only being able to set three feels really limiting.
Or another weapon skill, but if they were to add new weapon skills I would prefer short cooldown ones. As it is most weapons seem to have cooldowns increasing as you go from skill 1-5, and it would be nice to have an extra short skill to make battles feel a little more actiony.

Can we have an option to auto cast AoE Effects at your current target?

in Suggestions

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

If you have trouble using ground targets then you aren’t playing correctly.
Most players are controlling the camera permanently. If you begin your right click in the very centre of the screen then you will have absolutely no issues because your ground target will always appear in the centre of the screen. That means that all you have to do is pan up or down to get it in the right place to hit your target.

They are not going to bring in the feature you want because it runs counter to ground target skills…
Keep in mind that there are skills that have dual functions, like doing damage to enemies and healing allies. I don’t want those to cast on my enemy when I want them to cast on me or an ally, the same is true vice versa.

Also, I use ground target skills a lot when multiple enemies are attacking me, I can work on one using auto cast skills and use ground targets on the other.
If you don’t like how they play, find a weapon or a class that doesn’t use them. They are going to destroy really great game mechanics just to please people who can’t be bothered to learn how to use them >.>

Reduce stats further for high levels in low level zones

in Suggestions

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I don’t necessarily disagree with this. But if they were to do something like this I think it would need to scale you on a curve. As a level 40 in the starter areas I still felt really powerful, but it wasn’t toooo powerful. But as with you, once I hit level 55+ it was in the realm of 1 shot kills through using utility skills.

But I think the point of this is that any high level character visiting a low zone is doing map completion (like me) and doesn’t necessarily want to spend obscene amounts of time there (although with the scale of the maps, the hearts, POI’s, Vistas and Skill challenges they manage to keep you around for a decent and appropriate amount of time.

But I agree, other than from a completionist perspective there is little incentive to go back to older zones. I think even if you were playing with friends it would get a little tedious. If they were low levelled they might just get sick of you 2 shoting all their enemies and detracting from their gameplay experience?

GW2 Beta for mac requires an i5 processor or better. But you only have a Core 2 Duo.

It is possible that the error is coming from your processor not being able to keep up with what the game is requiring of it. CPU and GPU being the two most important things in terms of running GW2.

So unfortunately there might not be a solution :/

(Also, if it is related to internet just make sure you’re close to the router if you’re running on Wifi and there is no interference in between. Maybe try changing the wireless channel. Although as someone who lives in a rural area using regular broadband (Not ADSL2+ or Fibre), I’ve never had any disconnects or crash issues?)

So yeah… I was at the Clocktower and the animation that starts the jumping puzzle begun. As it was zooming up the tower my UI suddenly came back on screen, the loading screen appeared….. and then I was swimming around the tower. Which quite obviously isn’t meant to happen.

Unfortunately I think SOME of this is down to the really high amounts of server traffic because of everyone coming back to do Halloween.
But yeah, they’ve definitely altered some settings for the not so good…

If you want a solution that might help a bit>>
Open Finder and go to your user directory (It will be your name)>>Hold down alt and click “Go” in the menu bar>>Click Library (it only shows up if you hold alt)>>Application Support>>Guild Wars 2>>There is a file called “Config” make a copy of it and rename it “Config.copy” (You can rename it if something goes wrong)>>Open the “Config” file>>Command + F>>Type MTD3D>>It should find the line for you, it has a value of 4>>Change the value to 0>>Save the config file

That should restore some of your performance. Before the newest updates the value was set to 0, but they boosted it to 4 because it is supposed to increase visuals. Although personally I’ve switched between them and noticed almost no difference whatsoever, it just kills performance.

Hope that helps you guys!

Eeeek. Do not take my word for this…
I have not tried this, I can’t even confirm I’m looking in the right place, or that this will do anything.

But if you want to give this a try then make a backup of your Guild Wars 2 app (Copy it to some folder out of the way)
Go to your applications folder>.Right Click Guild Wars 2>>Show Package Contents>>Contents>>Resources>>CiderSettings.plist

In that file there is a line which says —cmdline followed by two quotation marks.
Try chucking -testVerticalFov inside those quotation marks and then cross your fingers that it works?

Alternatively: Wait a few seconds for some moderator to tell me that I’m wrong and it’s dangerous to touch that file or something of the sort xD.

A suggested fix to the clocktower.

I’ve completed the tower, but I’m going to actually agree with this.
Anyone who isn’t insanely dextrous or fortunate enough to own a powerful machine and fast internet is going to miss out on something they shouldn’t.

At least with other difficult jumping puzzles there is no rush, people can take their time to work it out correctly, but this just turns into something really unfair for a lot of people.

Even if there was just the option of doing it alone in a private instance I think that would be better. The amount of times I died because there was a gigantic Char in the way was just absurd.

You are sorely mistaken Ryo. Accounts aren’t tied to Clients or OS’s…
Considering there is no specific “Buy GW2 or Windows” or “Buy GW2 for OSX” options that would just be ridiculous…

You can play on either windows or OSX, and the client has absolutely no relation to your account whatsoever. They aren’t going to wipe any characters… They have explicitly stated this multiple times.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en-gb/news/announcing-guild-wars-2-for-mac-beta/ They would have also stated there…

The client is the only thing in Beta. Yes, they wiped characters when the GAME itself was in beta. But this is just a client…
