pls fix mac client.
or
open the source and let us fix it for you.
native 64bit will result.
profit.

That’s simply not true. If it were true there would already be a 64 bit non-crashing version of GW2 running in Wine or Crossover, both of which are open source communities/technologies which use pretty much the exact same technology as Cider… Porting a game is incredibly difficult.

To think that the gaming community could somehow produce a native OS X OpenGL version of a Direct X game is beyond ridiculous. That requires a lot of money and coding and upkeep to ensure that every single change to the game works on both the Direct X and OpenGL version. A gaming community can’t do that…

no, it is true.

the open source community is more competent that you think and history has proven this. skilled people, invested and believing in what they’re doing, don’t need hierarchical/corporate constraints to produce amazing things.

free your mind, friend.

Except that open source community already exists and in the last three years has not managed to produce anything beyond what the devs have produced… For console games maybe that would be a possibility, but not for an MMO, they simply don’t have the userbase to warrant that kind of large scale development nor to upkeep it. If creating an OpenGL version of a game was as easy as you seem to think of it then we would have already seen native porting communities popping up for really popular RPG’s etc. We don’t see that happen because anyone who can actually recode directX games into OpenGL is going to want to be paid for it. Your idea is very nice and utopic, but its not really how the world runs. That’s precisely why we have game development studios and publishers. Large scale AAA game development takes money. Lots and lots of it.

Be realistic…

That is a new feature in El Capitan. It’s separate to the USB booting that is available on all macs without a disc drive. Though the feature may actually not carry across to 2011 MBP’s, I would assume it does however. It’s software based, rather than EFI/hardware based.

Mac OS X screenshot destination

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

There is no way you can change it. In OS X the screenshots are handled by the OS, unlike in Windows. That’s why they go to the desktop.

You can manually change the screenshot folder for OSX (google can help with that easily), however it will make ALL of your screenshots go into the folder you specify. Not just GW2 screenshots.

So I’m sorry, I can understand that it’s pretty annoying, but it’s a limitation with how OS X handles screenshots, the game can’t specify where to put them.

Why do I have to wait 72 hours?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

If they gave it to you instantly then people would abuse the system by getting the gems, using them/selling them on, and then forcing a chargeback on the game purchase. 72 is just a couple of days, it’s really not that big of a deal. You’ll still get what you paid for and be able to use it on whatever you want. If you have to wait a little while to ensure that other people can’t cheat the system (which is bad for EVERYONE) then that should be ok.

Continuing to post about it isn’t getting you anywhere. It doesn’t change the fact that you have to wait 72 hours, like everyone else. In case you’re really bad at maths, 72 hours is three days. Making a post on “Day 1” is silly, because at most you’re going to be waiting three days and there’s no point posting about it each day. It doesn’t change how long you’ll have to wait and you’re just needlessly bumping your topic.

Getting a refund is not an option. I like the game, i’ve waited 3 years for it to become playable, bought the expansion, even if they refund only the expansion they will delete my whole account.

It also doesn’t change the fact that their ad is misleading and will bring more mac users who will soon also turn into salty people because they got mislead by ANet.
It’s a cicle that can only be broken by actually fixing this crap

You know that Ragfell meant getting a refund on the purchase of Windows and then just playing GW2 in crossover instead right? (if your comment wasn’t directed at theirs then my apologies)

Race Change

FlamingFoxx.1305

The game still needs to be able to keep track of what personal story chapters you have done in the past. If they allowed race changes they would have to try and put something in play that accounted for that. While not impossible it is probably not very easy and not really worth the development resources. Just because once you finish the storyline and hit 80 the story no longer has any relevance to you, does not mean that it isn’t still incredibly relevant to the games code.

New players haven’t gotten to play the game for three years. so they’re not paying any less than you are for the HoT expansion. The base game is free, so technically speaking, everyone new player or veteran already has the core game. Everyone pays the same amount for the expansion.

If you did not pre-purchase then no you do not get a free character slot (unless you buy one of the versions that comes with a character slot).

I’m thinking about getting a new iMac so this thread is very interesting to me. Do the issues everyone is having also apply to the windows client running thru Bootcamp? Just curious as I don’t think anyone mentioned it. I know it’s not the best solution, especially with Apple’s forced drivers for video that are usually a few releases behind AMDs catalyst drivers.

I just checked AMDs site and the versions (windows 7 and OS X bootcamp) are both 15.x

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/bootcamp

You won’t have any of these issues in Bootcamp. The game runs really well in bootcamp, because you’re basically just running a windows computer (Macs have the exact same hardware as windows computers).

You’re technically not entitled to the free character slot, since you didn’t actually get a real HoT key until after it was released.
However, if you submit a support ticket and explained what happened they might just give you one. It’s a bit might though. They may just apologise and say they can’t do anything.

Can you go to your bank and force a chargeback on the fraudulent key?

Crossover is kind of a ‘it may work, it may not’ situation.
They were working really really hard on GW2 when it first came out. That’s actually how I was originally able to play GW2. However, once the official mac beta client came out crossover stopped working on it and as a result it never became a “supported” application. There are very few people actively making changes to GW2 in crossover to ensure that it runs well. Any changes you do see will have come from Wine.

I’ve been doing a little bit of research.

When NVIDIA acquired Cider they used the technology for their Gameworks studio. It seems that the purpose of that studio, and of NVIDIA’s acquisition of Cider, is to help with porting games to NVIDIA’s Shield Android TV console. What that seems to suggest is that Cider is no longer being licensed out to other companies to use in the porting of games to OS X (If it still is then its incredibly stealth as there is nowhere that would suggest NVIDIA is doing this).

I do not understand all of this. It does seem though since NVIDA now has license to cider even if they use to do that Android thing it seem they maybe lose on money can earn from also sell license to company that want to use cider to do OSX game. I think maybe NVIDA could do both and make money. I do not know much about this but if they can and do not it seem they have lost money could make from also license.

It is more beneficial for NVIDIA to use the technology solely to focus on their own platform (the NVIDIA shield) as supporting other companies and licensing Cider out, as transgaming did, would require extra staff and resources. With transgaming, licensing Cider out was their sole purpose, and even then not that many games use/d Cider to port games to OS X. Aspyr has something like 60% of the mac game market share, so most companies looking to port to OS X use them. I doubt NVIDIA would make very much money at all by licensing Cider out. NVIDIA will make a lot more money by focusing on bringing as many games as possible to their own platform. Dedicating resources and staff to licensing out Cider to a very small number of outside game developers likely isn’t worth it. They’d be more likely to lose money on it I would think.

By extension you would assume that the people working on Cider (now NVIDIA) are no longer offering support to existing companies who had licensed out the Cider technology (aka Arenanet). Meaning that any issues with the OSX client are issues that Arenanet is having to deal with themselves.

I don’t say this lightly, but it’s also pure speculation, given that Arenanet probably don’t have the ability to tamper with Cider well enough to actually make the game run well given they no longer have transgaming’s support, it’s quite possible that they are actually exploring other means of bringing the game to OS X (native or otherwise). If they were in fact doing so, they would be unlikely to share that information until such a means of playing the game was actually prepared… It might also account for their lack of commenting or assistance with mac related problems. However, that could also be totally wrong as they’ve always been poor with assisting mac customers.

Either way, I think it’s helpful to have a bit more information/perspective.
Hopefully a more permanent solution pops up soon…

The 32 bit limitation on the OS X client is one imposed by Cider. There’s not a lot they can magically whip up for us. Also keep in mind that just because they’re testing a 64 bit client on windows doesn’t mean they’re ever going to nuke the 32 bit client. In fact they wouldn’t do that because there are still plenty of people out there with 32 bit only computers. OS X doesn’t have that problem because since Lion it has been a 64 bit OS.

The fact that they’re trying to improve the Windows client isn’t a bad sign for mac, nor is it a good sign. It’s completely neutral so I wouldn’t start throwing it around as some portent of doom.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure they bought it for parts.

Anyway, remember that if Anet is actually negotiating with someone to help them with the port they are likely gagged. I’m not say that silence = zomg native client but just that there are lots of reasons for silence on this.

Hopefully, they’ll some day publicly acknowledge the mac client having issues but, I’d be happy just to have pre HoT levels of crashing at this point.

Ahh but that’s how they get you. They reduce the number of crashes a little bit and suddenly everyone goes ‘omg thanks I can play now’ and forgets that there are still massive underlying problems that haven’t been solved.

Probably wait for the mac client for FFXIV online. it will be using middleware to apparently, but at least they said there going to be dedicated to constantly trying to improve the client and make it better, and they will have SUPPORT for it.

Uhhh… That’s an awful idea. Because… they already released their mac client back in July with Heavensward. It, like GW2, was powered by Cider. It was so so awful that they canned it and just offered everyone refunds. There was a whole lot of press about it. Was quite the screw up. When I say awful I mean just really really awful. At least GW2 is somewhat playable on OS X… Sort of.

Yes you are correct, but in yoshida’s statement following that event, he explained it all out, and then on top of the full refunds went on to further explain that they had then hired outside help (engineers and such specialized in mac), and that they would only re release it when it worked.

And that their mac client (yes a cider port) would be worked on continuously, receiving both normal updates, and middleware updates. So I’m just waiting to see how it will perform when they re release it, and ill decide from their, some cider ports can work very well. Not to mention he said they were going to work towards making use of the new “Metal” in mac, to make the clients performance difference hopefully close to none.

Unlike arena net they instantly took steps to make up for their mistake and to re assure the mac customer base, and to give them all the information on what they were planning to do very quickly.

Much better than what anet is doing.

Cider can’t make use of Metal.

Well, not the current version, anyway. Although with Nvidia buying them out, I’m not sure there’ll ever be a new version.

Incidentally, does anyone know why they did that? I mean what did they have that Nvidia was interested in?

I think it was either some kind of streaming technology, or the technology to port games to be playable on the NVIDIA Shield console.

Wouldn’t a native client also mean, as a necessity, that they would have to develop parallel patches? One for the Windows client, and one for the Mac client?

As I understand it now, we’re basically running the Windows client in a Cider wrapper, so they’re still only coding for one OS.

That, to me, is the biggest reason why I think a native Mac client is out of the question.

Yup basically that.

Having a native mac client would require them to be coding/developing everything in two different languages (so to speak). That would mean everything would need to be tested in both. That would mean have mac QA testers on top of their windows testers. It’s just all a lot more money that they probably don’t actually have.

Cider can’t make use of Metal. He was incredibly misguided when he said that. At the same time he also talked about Macs adopting DX12… Which is quite clearly not true. He also talked about how OpenGL is incredibly (30%) inferior to DirectX. That’s also not at all remotely true, the PS4 (and 3) use OpenGL after all. That was also months and months ago. It seems like they’ve abandoned any hope of that. And despite hiring outside help, the port was still going to be a cider port. There’s only so much you can do with that.

I think off the top of my head in GW1 you could order them alphabetically, in order of last played, and in order of creation. Potentially you could also order them based on whether they were PvE or PvP characters, but obviously GW2 doesn’t have that distinction.

Unreal Engine 4

FlamingFoxx.1305

I know exactly what changing graphic engne would mean.
Every map/character/monster they made, would need to be remade. They would need to remake game almost from begginings.
Sure it would cost much and take lots of time, but GW2 sold over 3M copies + not to mention gems in game. I think they wouldn’t have money problems.
But I forgot that for UE4 to run perfectly we would need monster PC.

It would take 3+ years to do it. It would be like starting the game development from scratch. It’s not just about shifting all of their maps and characters and monsters. It would require completely recoding the entire game. Every single event. All of the dialogue. Every single tiny asset. It would involve retraining all of the staff to deal with a new engine. Redoing all of the in game movements. The engine isn’t just about aesthetics, it runs most of the game… You’re also grossly underestimating how much game development costs. They would burn through all of their money (and then some) doing it, and they would be highly unlikely to make new sales as a result of the change. Meaning they would end up bankrupt…

Unreal Engine 4

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Short answer: No. Absolutely not.

GW2 uses its own engine, and to redo the game with Unreal would basically mean remaking the entire game. There are systems they could carry over, of course, but the whole thing would be extremely expensive, tying up artists and programmers for a long time.

UE4 has excellent lighting, among other features, but it’s just not practical here. I think Anet would rather continue working with their own engine, developing new content, than the massive amount of work it would take to redevelop the entire world. There are other considerations as well, like how much UE4 would raise the system requirements to get the results you’re imagining. Then you have licensing the engine, retraining everyone to work in the new engine, etc.

I think the Unreal Engine would make the game a lot more responsive and stable. The GW2 engine is terribly written.

The development of a game takes years. GW2 was in development for many many years before it was released. To release the game in an entirely different engine to the one that it was built in would take years and years and years… It’s not going to happen and it isn’t at all feasible. They’re not going to abandon their own engine and recode all of the game content just to use another engine. The cost of doing so far far outweighs any benefit.

Arenanet have kind of backtracked on underwater combat a bit. That’s why there aren’t underwater zones in HoT. They also removed the map in PvP that had underwater areas, and I think the new WvW maps also got rid of all the water.

So it seems like they’ve kind of abandoned underwater combat.

I’m very sorry that HoT hasn’t turned out how you had hoped, however they were pretty honest about what was going into HoT. I’m not really sure why you feel betrayed or excluded just because HoT didn’t include more of the kind of content that you personally like? Looking at your post history it seems that you feel like the HoT content is too hard? That’s fair enough, however Arenanet unfortunately cannot please everyone. Some players will always find things too hard, and some will find things too easy.

You note the silverwastes, champ trains, and world bosses as the kind of content that you enjoy playing. Personally I hate those aspects of the game. Just because I dislike them doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be in game.

I’ve tried that, walking to the sides, back paddling. nothing works. he continues running like a kittened potato.

That issue has existed since GW1 (which is one instance where you do really realise that GW2 is built on GW1). I think the way I always got it to stop was by double tapping forward, or by going into the keybind settings and figuring out which key sets your character to auto-run, and try tapping that when they keep moving and see if that stops them?

I know some of you have had some luck but I’ve tried adjusting my VRAM and looking for the Application Support folder (which doesn’t exist on my computer) I deleted and re-installed the client twice and I still have the invisible client. Help!!

Everyone has the application support folder. Your mac could not function without that folder. On certain versions of OS X, however, the folder is invisible.

1. Open finder.
2. Now look up the top of your screen at the menu bar. One of the items in the menu bar is the “Go” menu.
3. Hold down the alt/option key on your keyboard and click “Go” (keep holding it down). As long as you’re holding down the option key “Library” will appear in the drop down menu for “Go”.
4. Click Library, this will open the library folder for your user account in finder.
5. Then find the application support folder in the library folder (it should be in alphabetical order and therefore up the top).
6. Once you’re inside the application support folder find the folder titled “Guild Wars 2”.
7. Drag that folder to the trash and emtpy it.

Now when you start GW2 it will rebuild the application support folder and recompile the launcher. That should hopefully fix your problems.

Then move the copy of gw2.dat that you made into the new GW2 folder. That will prevent you from having to redownload the whole game, unless there’s something wrong with the gw2.dat file – in which case a repair command might help.

To be fair that setting is kind of awesome if you’re using a trackpad though. But I agree it shouldn’t be turned on by default because people don’t realise that its a game setting purposefully causing it.

You’re going to have to use some kind of third party software. Windows doesn’t have controller support natively.

Bellegraph,
Your speculation helps no one. You just seem to have an incessant need to preach here.
Pardon the misspelling.

All I’m preaching is patience and understanding about how software development generally works.

Actually you’re continually posting and trying to minimise an issue that other people are having. Everyone in this topic gets that you don’t think 4K is very widespread and don’t think that the devs will have the time or resources to put into it as it isnt a priority. You said your piece, why not just stop posting in this topic?

While I don’t think 4K is very widespread, I don’t understand why the game doesn’t have some kind of UI scaling anyway. That would negate the need to support specific resolutions as people would just be able to make it as big or small as they wanted. It would also be a boon to people with smaller resolutions, of which there are many, because they would be able to decrease the size. The smallest UI size isn’t that small. And clearly if you’re using a screen with a high resolution the biggest isn’t that big.

Can someone please tell me this is a joke.
We still have no word from ANet.

Are they seriously trying that hard to ignore us? I mean, the topic has over a thousand views, over 130 replies. Even though it’s a mac related thread it manages to stay in the first page.

ALMOST A WEEK AND NO REPLY?!

My suggestion is just to keep this topic alive and make sure it stays on the front page of tech support :/
They can’t ignore it forever.

Btw Cantisama.9324 people are having the issue so guess what it ain’t dead!!

While the issue may appear to be the same. It is not. The issue people are currently experiencing was caused by a patch and is being worked on. Hold tight and it will be fine soon. Dragging up very very old threads does not help.

Seriously.. All you have to do is wait a couple of days to use the trading post. That’s not a very big deal. In the long run the restriction helps keep scammers and gold sellers out of the game. That’s quite important.

Because you purchasing items off the gem store has no impact on the games economy. Whereas new accounts being able to use the trading post does. It’s to prevent gold sellers being able to buy and trade things basically.

Some of the files it is up to could indeed be very large.
Your best bet is to just leave the downloader running for a couple of hours and see how it goes.

Alternatively maybe one of the ports is blocked on your modem/router?

My hopes were ressurected with the announcement of an expansion. i thought "oh well, 3 years is enough time for a company to make a game so they probably tweaked the wrapper at least.

I think part of the problem is that there is very little they can do to tweak the wrapper to make the game run better. Cider was coded by transgaming and then licensed out to other companies. I don’t imagine that the GW2 dev team have an amazing understanding of cider’s coding and it’s probably difficult for them to work out the flaws in someone else’s software. Obviously if you’re going to use something like cider to offer your game to mac players then you really should understand how it works and be able to provide support and fixes. But it seems like they really don’t…

Anet sure work fast and communicate a lot on forum and work with TransGaming when that bug would not let Mac player buy gem or use gem store some time ago. They fix it in about 1 week.

I agree though we do not know what happen with TransGaming since Nvidia buy them.

The gem store is a website that is rendered by the game (or at least that was how it worked back then), so the reason it didn’t work properly was something they could fix, because it wasn’t actually an issue with cider, it was just the way chromium was working with OSX.
