Thief is always dead, no heals, no real condi cleaning. Does not matter how much their damage is boosted, if enemy is not dead after first second, thief will die.

If the gold rewards in WvW will become much better compared to PvE, there will be gold farming trains. Unlike PvE, in WvW you can easily make a deal with enemy that will gain most gold for both sides in shortest amount of time. Just like EotM.

Some Ideas about current WvW-Systems

- add direct added points (DAP) for capturing an objective
- add DAP for defending an objective (must be higher than for capturing, or no one will defend)

Points for capping wouldnt work because you can deny a server points by not recapping things. Zerg them down, win on PPK. It would promote poor and one sided gameplay.

The way I understand idea is that there is low constant tick from everything you hold and extra points for capturing stuff. Meaning if enemy is holding objectives, they still gain points (at much lower rate then they currently do) while you, by not capturing anything, will tick nothing.

I would modofy the system further by increasing points for capture with every tier objective has. So tier 1 tower gives you X points when you capture it, tier 2 gives X*3 and tier 3 tower X*5. If you are owner of objective, you should go and defend them once you have upgraded the stuff. If you are enemy, you should be more interesting taking those more valuable tier 3 objectives instead of flipping back same paper tower. This system would promote defending objectives you have held for long time without extra “defending things points”. Currently even if you lose tier 3 objective you can flip it back as sonn enemy leaves so there is no real point defending anything. But the new system would mean enemy taking your tier 3 stuff has gained 5 times more points then you by flipping it back couple minutes later.

The supply system proposed in first post. I dunno, it gets all fairly complicated and confusing. One supply and other supply. This works here but not there… I prefer simple and clear systems. I admit the current system is better then complete auto-upgrades but even current system manages to upgrade everything automatically if you simply own keep and camp for long period of time (over night). I would think the simple system where every dolly arriving to objective must be manually unloaded by player (just clicking the dolly) would pevent anything from upgrading when no players are playing the game.

3D itself is not better of worse compared to 2D. For example 3D combat is more difficult to manage because humans don’t fly around normally in real life. If you remember early GW2 experiments with underwater battles you should be able to understand why they were removed from the game.

In general 3D maps are more difficult to travel and people tend to get lost more easily. So they are more difficult to design. Developers need more time and more money to create them and to test them. The HoT maps are very badly designed, its not just only because they are 3D but they are just bad. They are boring and confusing and have no real logic in them. It does not help that half the content is always gated behind some silly mastery (that you never know you need to advance) or simply time. So much effort has been put into those maps to make sure players can not play there when and how they want.

The artificial gates are just some of worst examples of map design which all basically waste players time. It is not fun spending half an hour running around the map trying to get into point next to your starting spot only to realise the path is blocked by group of champs that only appear every other friday if you have increased your cheeseburger mastery to level 75. Not only is that really stupid but the game also fails to mention any of these blocks and gates in any way, nono, you have to search for them around the web, use the browser to find specific websites that tell you correct times and required masteries. Again, the game designed to make sure players dont play it.

The only real reason to play the games is to have fun. And playing in HoT maps is not fun. Its a struggle. Its like work. Hard work. Demanding work that can be done only at specific hours and if you dare to leave early you wont get payed. Fighting monsters there is not fun, they are annoying, they waste your time and they never even drop anything worth to pick up. Exploring is not fun because you run into those annoyig monsters and then you get lost and then some timer runs out. Gathering materials? Nop. Monsters, lost, gates. Every single thing you normally do in main Tyria area turns into horrible waste of time.

Only few years back everyone was barking around about 3D movies and TVs. Turned out, 3D content is really expensive and really difficult to create properly. So after banging about it few years it was dumped. Now its the VR. Everyone look at the VR!!! Its magic! It will change everything! No, it wont. There will be bucketload of really bad VR stuff, people will try it once and then dump it too. Game maps that spread in 3 directions, sounds great too. I hope to see one good 3D map in some day, probably in very distant future, but there surely aint any in HoT.

The reason for all those soulbound items is that Anet tries to force more players into those horrible HoT maps. They understand how badly these maps failed so they implemented all kind of systems to make sure players HAVE to go there, instead of making sure players WANT to go there.

I only run with guild group so my reply is probably not that much helping.

The Guardians in our guild all run DH/Hammer/Staff/Shouts.

The reason for that is simple, they are tanks and have to survive. They need to be able to take all that damage and block/heal/dodge it all off. Or lock enemy in one place to call in dps bomb. If they manage to do some damage to enemy, thats fine, but doing damage is not their primary role. Other classes can do more damage faster.

We of course use Water fields but you really need to coordinate for those. Not sure how many pugs even use TS.

Yes, as with all Guild Hall upgrades, they require a lot of grinding in PvE maps, lots of gold/materials to simply throw away. And thats the part of problem, in order to get them, you and your guild needs to grind many-many hours outside of WvW. Which, if you happen to run WvW-guild, is nonsense. Whole Guild Hall upgrade system is such a horrible mess designed to make sure players spend their time anywhere but in WvW.

Just because an achievement exists to “explore the whole zone” doesn’t necessarily mean you can get to all of it. I’d rather have the hints and mini-foreshadowing of unreleased map sections than only be able to get credit for ‘exploring the map’ when the last piece is revealed, making me go back and actually explore it all a second time.

That is just so wrong. If something is missing from the game, it should never block finishing any of achievements. It just shows how unfinished and buggy whole HoT is when they have to cut off large parts of the map to get expansion out in time.

The fact that something may or may not be added to the game some time later is not relevant to the current game. We all know stuff gets axed off, plans change and features stay on “maybe” list forever.

Also.. I got 3-10 people in zergs when I command in Black Tide (EU) this is gross and really annoying. I really like the server’s name.

Its not that much different in FoW, and we are comfortably second in tier 8. Our pug commanders dont get 50 people either. 10 if they lucky, sometimes just 5. Its been actually really good week for us and Arborstone has been much more fun to fight, compared to that horrible boring WSR. We are just starting to see people tagging up again and going into multiple maps to take objectives.

Without Jd daily raids FoW would probably be down there with BT, UW, Vabbi and RoS. But having even one dedicated WvW guild makes huge difference, specially in these low tiers.

Is it time for server merge?

Merging is not a solution as it does not solve any problems with WvW. Even if you remove 9, 12 or 15 servers, most people will still transfer into few highest population servers and others will again be empty. The matches are still boring and zergs run around in empty maps.

Without long term solution to why people dont want to play in WvW all these merges are fails.

Glass cannon strategy: exploit?

Against bosses and very large mobs, though, glass-cannons become an exploit. The GC charges in, deals a large amount of damage, dies, and then waypoints and runs back to combat to repeat the process.

IMO, this is an exploit. Do you agree? Why or why not? Also, if you agree, what should be done about it?

It is no more an exploit then having all points in armor, HP and damage reduction. Sitting near the boss, taking very little damage and also doing very little damage.

The bosses are designed in such way that players may die, use waypoint and run back. Having high damage and little HP is optional, nothing wrong with it.

I sort of agree on some of your points but…

We were using emergency waypoint 3 times in a row to save our EB keep during one evening. And it felt great! It still makes me smile and thats what the game is about, making people happy and giving enjoyable memories.

That WP is a blessing if you are outnumbered and have to fight 2 enemy groups in separate maps. As every good thing, I am sure it can be abused and blobbed down to boringness too.

Atm I am looking at the Airship in SM our enemies who also have more people placed there, and I know SM wont be flipped during this matchup. And its sad because part of WvW is ruined for a week.

People can still rez fully dead in combat.

Guild mission: Capture and Hold Camp

After you capture a camp, the guild mission needs that camp to upgrade to next tier. For that purpose, 20 dollies from your camp needs to reach their destination (tower, keep, SM). Thats the 5_20, you need it to reach 20_20.

It is not required for you to wait at the camp this whole time. You just need to make sure enemy does not recapture your camp.

However, you really want to do this mission when you also control 3 objectives the dollies from the camp run to. You may also want to run with the dollies and give them swiftness so they reach the destination faster and respawn faster.

Same way, capture and hold tower/keep missions require the objective to upgrade. They all need 20 dollies, so make sure you capture all the camps around the objective for all the dollies arrive.

Lets be honest, wvw guild missions were absurdly easy so far. There should be at least some effort put into guild missions, and there should be possibility to fail them, specially when enemy works against you.

I am not saying current version is the best one as it requires you to hold all the towers and keeps around the camp too. I would prefer something like “capture a camp and hold it for 20 minutes” instead. No dollies needed to reach anything, simply take the camp and then guard it or leave it and hope enemy wont retake it.

Sounds to me as the bottom 6, 9 or even 12 server:

  • All player there can freely transfer to somewhere else
  • ANet should either mark them as locked (new player will suffer only a bad experience, should they select such a world when they do not know what they do) or set the transfer-price to them the same as very high worlds (such that the free transfer from them cannot be exploited to switch cheap between higher worlds)
  • When no one there enters WvW anymore they can be dissolved.

Well, since you want to post pointless things, here is what Anet should do to fix the population problem:

  • disband all tier 1 servers and randomly spread those players between remaining servers
  • never allow any transfers again after that
  • new players will be forced to join lowest population server

The problem is, nothing should upgrade at all without players. Does not matter if things upgrade slowly now, they will still upgrade automatically over time. And that should never happen.

Upgrades should only happen from player interaction. Lets say each dolly carries more supplies and it takes less of them to upgrade objectives BUT dollies will not unload supplies without players. Once they reach destination tower/keep, they will stand by the supply depot and wait for players to interact with them and order “Unload Supply”. Only then will dolly return to the camp and start to bring next batch.

Designate certain PvE maps as WvW

I sort of like the idea but I also feel there is a lot of problems with it. Just getting some of the obvious questions out of the way:

  • so, if PvE maps will become part of WvW, how many players will be able to enter same map instance? Lets say there are 3 servers in matchup, it means only people from those servers can be in same map. Anyone in other server gets sent to another instance. So, what happens when you are in party with someone from other server? Guilds that have members from every server (even the ones fighting each other in WvW)?
  • What would be the WvW score based on? Number of kills? Some objective that one server holds and other dont have access to?

Basically, it will mess up megaservers again. I remember doing map completion before megaservers and it was horrible to find people for larger boss events when you were in low population server. Now I would not only need to find enough people to kill some map boss but also fight off players from 2 other servers trying to do the same.

Also, forcing players into open world PvP is never good idea. There is a lot of players who just want pure PvE. Thats the reason WvW maps were removed from world completion, so many players kept complaining about it. Now you saying half the normal PvE maps should be turned into PvP.

Nonetheless, it has been obvious for months now that low tiers are bleeding out of players, even more so since HOT, when the WVW mechanics went downhill. Even though I always liked our small server community, I don’t think that it is realistic to hope to keep it that way. It has been said above that the game is already getting older, and, except if they do a major gamemode overhaul (I know there have been rumors and annoucenements about it, but well, I’ll wait for detailed information, ‘cause if they decide to do it in 2020, I’ll be long gone), the overall player population in this gamemode won’t be going up. So it’s really more about when they will decide to merge servers, rather than if. Or they will give a free/cheaper transfer to the few remaining people before closing the low tier servers. Call me a pessimist, but I expect them to do so after the servers reach critical emptiness. That being said, Vabbi borderland during week days looks like the Gobi desert, so we could be close to that point already…

Sadly WvW is pretty much deserted in tier 8 too. Except WSR which tries to climb up to tier 7 and keeps running around empty maps during the day. I am not blaming them, I understand they have many more people and not FoW nor RoS has anyone left for them to fight.

Still, when before HoT low tier servers lost players because people who wanted more fights kept transfering off to higher tier servers, now low tier servers lose players who just quit GW2. I mean even our pure WvW guild has half the members only log in once a week or month to check if anything has changed. The other FoW players who I know before HoT spent hours every day upgrading BL maps are not in other servers either. They not doing PvE, or PvP. They just left the game.

Thats why I am not sure shutting down these low tier servers will help anyone. I believe people who get their home server removed, will also stop playing, not just WvW but GW2 too. So, shutting them down will not get more players to higher tier servers either, it just makes less players play GW2.

Long time Vabbi player here, we’re also around 20 spread over the day – thought I don’t belive the WvW problems go away by merging servers. Especially if you don’t find a way to keep the server communities intact.

Hey Vabbi (waves). We can probably get to fight you soon, if RoS continues to drop. Do you have any guilds left in Vabbi that raid every night? Cause atm all we have to fight is that blobby WSR server-wide pug-group that keeps increasing steadily as we kill them until they eventually overrun us by pure numbers and it becomes not fun again. RoS has no guilds to fight.

Are you suggesting WvW in GW2 has issues because Anet is owned by NcSoft? Or GW2 players should try to pressure NcSoft somehow to make WvW better?

Ncsoft have nothing to do with GW2 anymore.

Also, “fixing” the population balance will require nothing short of a miracle. A miracle I seriously doubt is ever going to happen. Especially not without Raptor Jesus looking over us.

NcSoft still owns GW’s they have a lot to do with it. Anet just took over the publishing of GW’s but it is still owned by NcSoft and they still have a parents voice in anything that Anet does. I give ya it’s more complicated than that and I am sure NcSoft is trying to keep the Anet team happy and working but NcSoft still owns Anet.

An yet, its more likely that NcSoft has no idea GW2 even has WvW. Just because one company owns another, does not mean they are actively engaging in every minor aspect of business they own. NcSoft is probably owned by some banks or investors, why not try to address those to get GW2 WvW population fixed?

Get over who owns who. GW2 is developed by Anet and if you want something done, you need to talk to Anet about it.

Same thing has been proposed for long time now (and I am in EU tier 8, previously in tier 9, so I know how empty these are). I think it has not been implemented by now for 3 main reasons:

  • it would mean Anet admits HoT was a failure (at least for WvW, not going to argue about PvE atm) and they really don’t want to get that sort of tag.
  • the people left in empty servers are the ones who have had 3 years to transfer off. And yet, they havent. Its not about having free transfer or not, its because these players love their server. What you are suggesting is they abandon everything they worked hard for last 3 years and start to fight for some other server they dont care about, or in worse case, the server they have been fighting against many months and have grown to hate.
  • there is no reason to believe server merges (or reductions or deletions) actually increase WvW population. I believe for example that players in bronze league will not continue playing once bronze league is eliminated, they just quit the GW2. The people who “just want some action” are doing PvP or have already transfered away long time ago.

CoR- did patch cooldown help?

There’s a point of diminishing returns for Rev now. No matter how many do a CoR, only one will hit. Prenerf the more the better, now they’re stepping on each others toes.

I agree. I am still not completely sure the change is intended. But if it is, it makes running large group of Revenants pointless. You would still take 1-2, even if all the do is provide group boosts and hit enemy with CoR. Bringing more – no point anymore.

WvW reset

Hey, I am in FoW.

We have been stuck with exact same servers in this matchup for way too long now. However, the match does reset every Saturday evening. WSR, which has more then 5 times of players then FoW and RoS combined, pops their people into WvW and takes everything within 20 minutes. After everything turns green, they all leave and that is how the maps stay for the whole week again. So yea, it may look like nothing has changed at all but its because of WSR is simply dominating this tier atm.

World vs World Holiday Sneak Peek

  • Objectives upgrades will no longer be automatic based on time. They will upgrade based on dolyaks that reach them. Smaller groups can now prevent an objective from upgrading by preventing dolyaks from reaching that objective.

Yes, very nice. This should help getting people back on the wvw, as there is now point being there. Either defending your camps/dollies so your structures get upgraded or killing enemy dollies so their structures stay in low tier.

  • Supply cost for all catapults are being reduced by ten supply. The layout of the Desert Borderlands map has increased the number of catapults required to take some objectives. We agree with your feedback that also increasing the cost of catapults pushed the balance too far towards defense so we are tuning that more towards offense.

Well… You see, the main problem with supply is not so much cost of one single siege, as the incredibly stupid cost of getting your +5 bonus. You really should be changing the way wvw guild upgrades are unlocked.

  • Points per kill will be turned on and kept on. This is to more directly recognize the contribution that fighting other players adds to the success of the world.

Yes! The score should be based on active stuff you do in wvw (kill enemy, take structure) and not something you just get over time for doing nothing (passive tick for “holding” stuff).

Without actually knowing how many points and how are awarded, it is tough to say how much impact this change will have. Lets suppose every time enemy is killed, your server gains 1 point. When average match ends with 300k per server, and you manage to kill 100 enemies per day, that is 700 extra points. Or about 0,2%

This could mean more populated servers with huge zergs killing each other by thousands all the time, gain much more points then servers in last tier where main problem is lack of enemies. Will this change in score affect the rating? We could end up with even more locked matches because less populated servers never actually manage to score enough points to raise their rating high enough for next tier.

One thing that worries me about this change, it how new wvw players will be welcomed. Being a rallybot was bad enough but now new players, who will die a lot, will give opponent points too. Possibly the wvw chat turns into toxic spitbowl where everyone who has not done wvw for last 3 years gets pushed off. happens a lot even now, this would just give another reason for veterans to behave like assh*.

  • The number of players who can rally off a single kill has been reduced from five to one. Players will also no longer be able to revive defeated players while in combat. You still will be able to revive downed players while in combat. Both of these changes are designed to help fights resolve and to give smaller, more skilled groups a better chance against larger groups.

Being in a guild that usually fights larger groups I can only welcome this change. In many fights we kill half of enemies and then while we fight remaining players they start to revive the ones we already killed.

I did not have problems with any story fights from HoT. I even think they were easier then LS2 bosses. I did not Google anything, did not read any tips, did not watch any videos about it. I just ran in and tried.

I died 3 times by falling from that stupid rotating tree.

I died once because the in fly-phase glider did not open.

I guess it depends on what class you play but in the end it wasnt specially difficult, and did not take that long.

Suggestion: Proof of Heroics changes.

I have already finished all HPs in HoT maps on my Revenant without even accessing those maps once, all from wvw proofs. Now I am piling up on souldbound proofs that have no use. I guess I will spend them on superior siege at some point.

23, everyone does WvW since we are WvW guild.

  • Do you find any of the Auras from claiming essential?

Not really.
I dont mind them either but they have not changed anything.

  • How many World vs World upgrades has your guild earned, what level are they, and how close are they to getting +5 Supply, in particular? Do you feel it is achievable? How much have they spent?

The system is so confusing I dont even know what are World vs World upgrades you asking about. We have Objective Aura 6 and can claim Keeps. Guild is level 29. I have no idea how far we are from +5 since I still don’t understand how the upgrades system works.

  • How has your guild been obtaining the upgrades? Do you feel that this has taken time away that you would have rather been playing World vs World? Please be specific, such as “I spent 5 hours getting shovels”, etc.

Members have been doing specific PvE maps every day to gather materials, including flax, shovels, ley line sparks, crystals, sand and countless other items.

I am not even 1 step closer to getting any new shinies like ascended backs or legendary items because everything I get goes to guild upgrades so I have not been able to gain any gold either.

  • How has the new system impacted you and your guild’s playing experience in World vs World? Would you prefer the new system or the pre-HoT system?

In the pre-HoT system we had everything unlocked. Yes, of course I would prefer NOT wasting my time and gold to get those upgrades back.

We still raid about same amount as before. But first – there is much less enemies, the enemies we see are usually big boring blobs and not guild groups. Second – our members and enemies too spend much less time in WvW during off hours (for 2 reasons, you really HAVE to do PvE maps and auto-upgrades in WvW).

  • If you could change one thing about the Guild upgrade system, what would it be?

Everything. I hate it.

Hardcore players should really stop posting about what is or is not suitable content for casual players. The fact that you can finish something under a minute, naked, with one hand only and wearing blindfold, does not mean it is doable for average casual player.

The average casual player never reads forums btw, so arguing with them in forum is fairly useless. If they don’t like the content, they simply stop playing.

I guess you are not German or French, looking for general EU server with mostly English speaking players. Your best bet is pick one with Very High population then (Seafarer’s rest, Piken Square, Far Shiverpeaks, Desolation). I doubt one of those has much more wvw players then others, and they all are huge compared to BT.

There is obviously 2 views to the new sentry ability to expose enemy players. I find it now more interesting and more strategical, since you have to decide if you want to go through enemy sentry and become visible or go around it using longer route while remaining hidden. The value of sentries is now much higher and you should always capture those points, instead of being largely ignored as they used to be.

But it boils down to why different people play. I wish to find enemy and fight them, I think chasing enemies around in the map is boring, so everything that makes finding enemy easier is good. I know for some people it is completely opposite, they spend large amount of time avoiding fights, taking objectives without defenders and running away when anyone shows up.

PPT needs to matter

Until servers have such huge difference in population, PPT should not matter at all. Why would server with more people get better rewards? That would just mean everyone transfers into one single server which always wins all the matches (happens now too but less because many players ignore ppt). Or why should server with strong nightcrew get better rewards even when most of their prime time players are horrible and lazy. No, you should not be rewarded for work someone else did why you were sleeping.

So I was hoping I could get a few genuine suggestions on how to dip my toe into the wvw realm without being a total drag or detriment to my world. What would be a good first step into wvw for someone who is completely clueless about it?

I understand that there is a lot of sour grapes about the current state of wvw, yet I’d still like to familiarize myself with this part of the game.

Try to log into wvw during prime time and find pug commander tag. That is usually created for people like you, without real wvw guild to teach basics. Follow the pug commander for week or two around the map. If they use teamspeak, get it too, at least listen to it if you dont want to talk there.

If you get into grop vs group fight, try not to die. Don’t rush into frontline. Stay with the group and do ranged damage.

Always carry supplies. If you don’t have any, run to camp and get some.

Don’t place siege. Usually commander puts down siege. If there is no commander, other players may know good spots for it. Badly placed siege is just waste of supplies.

Try to improve your cannon/mortar/AC skills so you can defend structures. While no enemies are around, use those to practise just so you know how far they shoot.

If you want to do more off-hours roaming, it can be fairly tough alone. Try to find some other players to group up and take camps, perhaps empty towers. Remember, many players have done this for several years now and can be pretty bad at new players. Don’t be surprised if “you are such a noob, go away” happens, there are idiots everywhere.

You will die a lot. Probably more then you like. Everyone does.

4.) Why you burning up my processor doing needless things. The little dots that have been added to the mini map showing enemy movement is just wasting bandwidth and adds really nothing to the game. Its hard to believe you committed devs to coding this up.

Thats one of the things about HoT I actually like. And I hope it will be expanded so guards around structures mark enemy players same way.

It is unlikely you find any wvw players who think current system is perfect. Yet, this is what we have and most have adapted.

As about the question if you should pay gems to transfer to other server… I have never done that myself and I am still in last tier server. Not that years ago when I picked the server, I had any idea what wvw was or how were servers different. Things is, whatever you think perfect wvw is, the server you transfer to is probably different. Top tier servers could have queues so you still can not play, or they could run huge boring blobs around in empty maps.

Perhaps, it is better to try find a guild first. With wvw guild even the lower tier matches can be fun. Or if most of your guilds are in different server, you at least have some idea what the situation is there.

Materials

Its probably one of several reasons players have left WvW. But you should also consider that these materials are available only in specific HoT map, and thse HoT maps require large number of players too to complete the meta, gain xp and drops. Even now, HoT subforum is full of people complaining those maps are empty and they can not do anything. If those materials would be available in WvW, more players would start to avoid HoT maps, making it even more difficult for remaining players there.

There is number of things anet could do to improve current situation:

  • make those materials tradeable
  • increase drop rate
  • reduce stupidly high costs of GH upgrades

Everyone shouting in map chat is just another stupid player. There is no way to know who from the shouters actually knows anything about the issue, who are trolling or joking, who have mixed up maps or day/night cycle.

It is just badly designed game if the game itself does not provide means to understand where important events are. The metas are overly complicated, confusing and long. Just as the new maps itself are.
