Is there a way to actively target friendly units with direct attacks, as opposed to targeting with the ground or a nearby enemy with AoE? I ask because staff Water 1 auto attacks would be nice for healing if it could be directly targeted at an ally.

nope, none, not even aiming it to an ally like a melee skill would since the Ai for ranged autoattacks is terrible

The fractals are all based on historical events in GW lore, aren’t they? I’ve never done them so I don’t know firsthand, but that was my understanding anyway.

Sylvari are a very young race and don’t have many notable events in their history (the only one that might qualify would be the experiments on Sylvari by Asura that created the Nightmare Court, and I’m not sure how you’d make a combat fractal out of that), so from that perspective it makes sense there’s no Sylvari fractal.

As for Living Story… there aren’t really any LS chapters based on Asura either. Asura often end up playing integral parts in the story, but it never revolves around them. Unless you count SAB, but that was more an activity than a “story”.

just out of curiosity, but where exactly did you read that the nightmare court was a result of asura’s experiements? As far as Im concerned they were founded by a second born who didnt want the tree to be subject to some tablets and instead reveal its “true nature”

also, at no point have I felt sadness in this game for an npc, with the exception of tybalt. I even knew he was going to die since I played a vigil character first, and still, tybalts writing had a 17 year old guy reduced to tears.

I was rather disappointed about Trahearme, I feel like he is the Mary Sue of the game, and I feel cheated when in the end I was still 2nd in command and got no recognition other than a pad on the shoulder and a “good job, you will be remembered for 2 generations only, after that only the guy in command gets the fame, you will go down the drain of history”

Or lack of. Sylvari dont always get attention, but when they do it is minimal and a bad guy.

We have fractals based on all races,even repeated ones, sylvari got none.

We have had Living Stories based on ALL races, some repeated, sylvari got none.

All races have loved characters, all we have is the hated Thahearme.

We have the potential to have one of the most beautiful follow up to a original story; Faloin and Kaithe after Twilight Arbor, we have the soundless (which most people dont even know they exist or what they are because we get absolutely no attention), we have the most beautiful elf/ent/avatar glowy original and newest races with the potential of making the game more “magical” yet all sylvaris have seen are the bad guy at the end of Southsun Cove and now Scarlet (which the voice acting is beautiful and smexy).

Please Anet, can we get some attention, some legit and for good’s sake attention? Perhaps a follow up, a living story, new characters?

To make it worse, not only have we gotten nerfed, but other classeshave only gotten buffed, and Im not talking about “we changed the tool tip from x to z” , im talking about rangers gaining stealth, guardians healing/hitting harder, mesmers getting some tweaks, necros going above the line, warriors getting even more buffs, etc etc etc….eles? nerf nerf nerf, QoL improvement to staff which are a great start but by no means brings the weapon to anywhere near viable..

The class is in some serious need of love and buffs. Im looking specifically at you, staff.

For 11 months I have watched slowly but surely the deterioration of the class as it started getting nerfs after nerfs which were intended at D/D. Many nerfs sure hit D/D, but the collateral damage to other builds were harsh.

But what bothers me the most is the intentional negligence of staff despite the fact that the community has been pleading for the weapon to be brought on par with othr viable options. Everyone is too scared to go against Anet, by now Im sure my account is flagged and I would like to keep it for myself as to what that flagged status has done in my gameplay because I would like to believe Anet is a respectable company. That aside, after countless hours, been playing since release exclusively staff ele, all my major equipment, map exploration, gems items, ascended gear, experience in PvP and WvW, all dungeonswith all its respective paths, Im starting to realize how weak the class is when I decided to roll a guardian and mesmer just for the sake of having other alts.

It pains me to see a guardian can do anything and everything a ele can while still remaining funtional, with almost any build, which is sad. A mesme can bring incredible amount of utilities, survavility and still insane damage, which with the “excuse” of us having range we arent allowed such damage, yet mesmers have a whooping 1200 on 2 weapons and they can dish hell in heaven.

The only reason I keep playing eles is because the fun factor and loyalty factor in my is quite high. I have binded all my skills in such a way that I can do it with my left arm, all I do with a guardian is stand still while providing shouts/walls/boons/insane damage, if the enemy gets too far GS#3 and back on the target. That, is boring, but stupidly effective. Just to match that effectivity I have to blow all CDs, including utilities in long CD, go through an entire rotation of elements and lose an incredible amount of damage.

Once again, admit it, you are neglecting the class and it isnt because it hasnt been brought out. All pros are starting to reroll and have even begin to advise the same until further notice. Is all that remains of the class royalty and “fun” from the spell animations?!

It is sad that people’s ignorance get classes nerfed, eles are an example of this. People assume that all eles can heal for massive amounts, deal massive amount of damage and get away everytime because they saw 3 D/D eles doing doing each thing separatelly, hence they, once again, ASSUME all eles can do so, including STAFF which is definitely the underdog of all weapons (im gonna assume focus doesnt exist because it might as well).

Because of this we suffer from people who have had to “deal” with these “nightmares” in PvP and want the class to be eliminated since they dont play it and they couldnt care less. I understand, it is human nature, nobody wants to be paper facing scissors, everyone wants to be rock and have paper being wet. What I didnt like is how Devs gave in to the whinning and nerfed right and left without any thoughts on how this could affect other speccs.

Even more, it pains me even more than we have such a useless Fire trait line. It pains me even more knowing that none of the devs or testers play staff (by a fact, all it takes is 10 minutes of play to realize how flawed that weapon is)

I also fundamentally disagree with the premise of your discussion, Fortus. Screaming at the top of your lungs that elementalists are underpowered isn’t going to make it more true. They’ve been decent at several aspects of the game for a long time and while they might be wavering here and there overtime, they’re not by any means terribly underpowered.

In fact, elementalists are often appreciated in dungeons. So… I dunno. Really sounds like a L2P issue where you expected that sleeving into a new build meant you were automatically going to be better instead of actually learning how to utilize it.

It is understandable that it can come out like that, but Im not saying eles are underpowered, just that they need some work in some lacking areas, aka staff. I believe everything else i eles work well, minus the emblematic weapon of said class.

Lack of experience in the class isnt, lack of skills isnt since otherwise I wouldnt have been able to beat liadr, though beating liadri is preobably not the bet example, it is the only one I can provide in this scenario.

Staff needs work, a weapon that has 19/20 skills AOE suffers of its own strenghts, as simple as that.

Possibly not the best conditions are met. Eles are very strong in DPS. A group that can meet your needs is ideal for a LH Ele. I may suggest asking the dungeon forum for their opinions. People are quite knowledgeable there since your concern seems to be dungeons.

Edit: Better yet, if you’d like, we can just crosslink to the dungeon forum and just invite a few people to give their opinion.

Interesting. See, I have ele to 80 as well. I have staff, 2 daggers, a scepter and a focus for her. Most groups that have melee classes actually Like when mobs group up (so they can cleave and AoE them down easier).

In “target rich” environments, you will be maximizing the use of your staff. In dungeons, you can always swap weapons between fights, when running from one to the next. When you learn the fights, you can optimize which tool to use and when.

Now, would it be nice if staff did more damage? If ANet happened to change it, I certainly wouldn’t complain, but instead of always being in the “Every weapon should do the same kind of damage”, start thinking “Every weapon has its place and purpose.”

Elementalists can actually do pretty awesome damage. But you must be flexible with your choices.

I have 2 daggers, a scepter and I dont have a focus. 2 set and a half sets, zerker and PVT, a couple of knight trinkets. I run back and forth between LA and dungeons to switch builds for dungeons. I have done all dungeons and currently run at least 4 exp every day. I know my “fights” thank you, please dont assume just because we are asking for buffs we havent tried everything. I have tried hammer, I have tried conditions, I have tried bunker, I have tried zerker (which is what im currently running). Truth of the matter is; even when the best conditions are achieved, we fall behind.

Been playing since release, only gotten a few good drops, that is, exotics, at most 8, all worth less than 2 gold mind you, 3 of them were FoTM exotics which I couldnt sell of course.
As for precursor, I have given up on it, not an aqutic one dropped, not one. Thrown countless rares and exotics into the mystic toilet and pearl stuff is the only thing I ever get. Good luck my friend, because we definitely lack it.

edit I dont like to get into “conspiracies”, but my cousin who has less than 400 hours and plays every2 months already got a precursor, sold it for profits and has logged in 1 months, im expecting that once he logs in he gets another one. Maybe Anet rewards people who sta long time som good stuff so they feel an incentive to stay, and those who log every day or almost everyday get a DR since they are already “hooked” and dont need anything else…..I hope not and just that the RNG god just hates me…

Another thing I hear often is; “well, you got caught with staff? well, too bad, thats part of your ‘weakness’”, well, then give me an strenght, because right now staff is underwhelming in ALL aspects of the game, and dont give me the “jack of all, master of none” excuse, an engi or guardian not even specced into pretty much anything will out do us while still retaining threat. A guardian will outdo us in pretty much anything, even a fully specced damage dealer guardian brings more support and healing to a table than a fully support/healing ele, while the ele cant even kill most targets if you go in this direction.

You can always swap weapons inbetween combat.

Certain tools are more effective in one situation than another. Use the appropriate tool for the appropriate situation. A hammer is great for driving a nail, but not so good at unscrewing a bolt.

here is the thing, a weapong shouldnt be held back because of a niche situation in which many of players dont get involved. Not everyone plays WvW 24/7, heck, not everyone even cares about WvW too much since that game mode should be recalled ZvZvZ, Zerg Wars 2. Im sorry but balancing a weapons around the prospect that you can have 5 people bottlenecke into a place is not healthy balance. Staff is in dire needs, and Im certainly not interested in WvW. I want to be able to bring staff into a PuG dungeon and be on par in damage with other classes. I want to be able to hold my own in tPvP instead of needing 5 people to be standing still on a point. You see where Im trying to get at?

Eles lack “options” , whereas you have a hammer, a dog, an architect and a spaceship, I only have a hammer and a starved cat, we cant “swift weapons” in combat and switching attunements inst very helpful when they ALL bring the same thing to the table; AoE.

Just want to remind everyone the 1000 is just an arbitrary number for easy understanding purposes, Im sure Anet can tweak it and make it so it isnt too linear, giving the edge to single targets and not making single target classes useless , for example, instead of hitting 1000 in isolation it would hit 750 or 800. Would give single target the upper edge (200-250) more damage but would also give the AoE class a fighting chance instead of the now “200 damage” regardless of how many people are around.

Im talking about ground based PBAoE for certain professions, especially staff elementalist, staff mesmer, staff guardian (and Im not sure up to what extent with staff necros). This could also apply to large PBAoE in other professions.

In a game where there is an AoE cap of 5 I think it is wise to balance in between a middle ground for single targets and max cap AoE 5 targets. I believe 3 would be the perfect break point in between single and AoE damage.

I will break it down into 3 points:

  1. Break-even point
  2. People learning to leave the red circle.
  3. Possible new mechanic, AoE —> “Isolation”

For number 1; Break point

Let me put a arbitrary numerical value;

Lets say that single target is 1000.

AoE Abilities would do 333 damage instead of 1000, which is 33% or 1/3 of the damage a single target would do. In order to “break even” with single target damage you would need 3 targets (333 x3 = 999 ~ 1000), but if 5 targets are hit then it would be 333 x5 ~1500 , which would not be a punishement for AoE weapons. Im looking specifically at staff ele which suffers from having 19/20 AoE skills and which you need 5 targets to stand still to break even with a mesmer which can pretty much kill someone and leave the another one half dead with collateral damage, it would give staff ele a fighting chance in small skirmish scenarios like 2v2 and 3v3, or even a 1v1.

Second Point; People learning to leave the red circle

I think it is safe to say that by now most people have learn that staying in red circle is a NO-NO in Guild Wars 2 as proven by liadri and countless of other bosses, now that the learning phase is over and that we can take the learning wheels off, we can up the damage of AoE, because this is the most important part; most people can walk out or dodge out of AoE and that has to be taken into account, specially staff ele which heavily depends on people inaptitude to walk out of the circles or having to coordinate or “waste” utilities into CC (which we only have one in long CD) just to land a extra tick. A skill should be rewarding enough to land 2/5 or even 1/3 of its duration, not a requirement that they stay the entire duration.

Last point; possible new mechanics for AoE——> Isolation"

Let me explain back into the arbitrary number of point 1; 1000 damage. Basically, if you hit 3 targets then you would hit each for 333, but what isolation would do is; check # of enemies in AoE, base damage (1000) divided by # of players. Basically it would go something like this, if there is only one target, it gets hit by 1000 damage, if there are 2, then 500 each, 3 gets hit by 333, you get the idea. Now, im sure there would be some technical implications and of course AOE cap would be included, since otherwise it would hit for 0.0001 in a crowd, but this would not punish certain gameplays for some classes which dont have the choice to change weapons mid fights. Of course so that single target classes dont get screwed over maybe the damage can be something ike 750 or 800 instead of 1000, I would much rather have that than the current 200 regardless ofhow many people are around

“small shaving”!? mist form is a free punching ball that does neither damage, allows you to heal, conditions will still tick, long CD, allows enemy to reset the fight by allowing them to heal and cast long casting skills. The only reason it was ever used was for the heal, now it is almost a favor to the enemy. Water/arcana nerfs sure hit D/D, but the poor staff ele bit it dry since we already had almost no sustain to begin with and no condition removals except for a 40 secs long CD skill.

D/D RoTL, 40 seconds if it doesnt hit anything. Please, that would only be fair if every skill in the game; Guardians GS #3, warriors 99999999 movement skills dont hit and have the CD doubled, heck, even thieves D/D HS should have a double CD if the skill doesnt hit, would only be fair.

I dont like to sound like “eles are the worst bla blah blah” but right now eles are outmatched in EVERYTHING, and it isnt about “jack of all, master of none” thing, a guardian can literally do everything an ele does, better. Mesmers despite the lack of “mobility” does a better job at surviving while doing INSANE damage and bringing insane utility.

Eles are in a really" bad spot, only thing they have going for them is a *one trick pony thing which is to go with S/D and try to burst someone by surprise or definitely die trying.

While the last buffs were a nice start, the weapon is nowhere near viable, unless you consider golems threatening.

The lack of reliably putting damage to targets is detrimental to the class, and even if landing everything the damage is definitely NOT worth it.

Please, look into the weapon, even the support it brings is subpar to non-support classes.

Possible fixes include; fire; making it easier to put some damage, that or simply upping the damage by A LOT. Water #5 needs some direct healing or lower CD, though tbh I would be ok with water #5 if water #1 could be cast on either allies or targetted. Lighting is supposed to be single target, yet element remains low damage, the #3 is impossible to land, STILL, #2 has a long casting time for a meh damage. Earth is pretty much pointless beyond magnetic aura.

Please Anet, lets see staff elementalist finally get their deserved buffs, we have only gotten the short end of the stick with indirect nerfs, we have neither mobility nor healing, CC is easily avoidable (too easily except for frozen field, which has a whooping 40 seconds CD), support is subpar and damage is “normal” if you manage to land everything on a golem.

I have been playing staff elementalist since release, I have put all my time, effort, gem items, work on legendary, map completition, dungeons, fractals, laurels, ascended items, reputation on my ele through the last 12 months. 90% of my playtime has been on them.

It wasnt until recently that I decided to roll a guardian and a mesmer to have alts just in case, and I have come to the sad realization, that; there is nothing an ele can do that a guardian can do way better. The only thing that an elementalistscould ever hold over a guardian is the wall siege on WvW, and even then I would rather have a guardian 90% of the time in WvW.

  1. Healing; guardian is better
  2. Boons; guardians have beetr upkeep, more at disposal and there isnt a single boon that eles give that guardian have available on call and lasts longer.
  3. Aegis
  4. Damage Sure, ele may have some good damage, but guardian will bring close to the same damage while still providing 15 stacks on might team-wide on his own every a few seconds. Also, a sword/focus guardian will out damage most eles on long fights
  5. Support If you think staff ele is on a good spot or even acceptable spot, then I dare you play it. Eles hold absolutely nothing on guardians on supports, there is no way around that one.
  6. Fun factor Eles have this, due to their mechanics, but fun is relative, some people have fun knowing they are not a drag to their team and being a valuable asset to their party.

Eles have only been given nerfs lately whereas everyother profession has gotten some beefy buffs. The staff buffs were a good start but that weapon is not near viable yet. I was able to faceroll Liadri with my guardian and had to struggle SEVERAL times with my ele. Sadly I dont think this has to do much with “skills” , while I might not be the best ele in the world, I can hold my ground, and many eles agree with me when I see eles are MEH to not say underpowered.

Elementalists and Dungeons

Does anyone else feel like elementalists are almost always #1 target of most bosses?

My guild has noticed this to, usually in CoE most bosses dotn even bother to go for anyone else until Im dead, they even have me running around in purpose since the bosses just follow me regardless of what i do ( :C ) , Im looking at you, Lupicus, among countless of other bosses in FoTM , CoE, HoTW and CoF p1 final boss.

Find one arena that has at least 2 people, usually the rotation is; one dead, one reviving, the other doing. Dont go to arenas alone, otherwise that will happen. Trust me, it works!

unfortunately there are no healers in this game.

Now, as for dying to low level mobs; you get downlevel on areas below your level, i have a fuly levelled ele with top notch gear and I sometimes die too.

Armor has very little say on defense, it is barely negligible, so dont bother about that. Also, eles and guardians have the lowest hp pool in the game, eles are in a really bad spot atm. All I can tell you is; keep playing, dont worry, you will get used to it, dont try to tank things or heal through them, Anet made sure those things dont exist in the game. Focus on killing stuff before it hits you too much.

Sad me, eles and guardians cant be part of this conditions meta due to guardian only having burning and eles only having burning and bleeding (both bad at it btw since while we do have the ways to put them, we lack the means to survive like say a necro, who has an insane pool of HP, DS, fears, lifesteal, minions to clutter and block projectiles and also do most of the damage for them sometimes, all that while remaining at max range, fully mobile and insta cast skills)

Instead of making contions the meta, how about giving conditions some rework. Some classses (namely guardians and eles) have the smallest hp pools in the game, and unless you go fully into condition cleanses (totally forsaking damage) you will melt since neither toughness, protections, retaliation or damage soakers can save you from conditions.

I would prefer if we rather had more versatility. I want to play damage dealers, with spikes, right now only “viable” options for this are thieves and mesmers and thats because stealth also needs balancing.

No, I dont want Anet to balance around the “current meta” , because while you definitely love it, many other people dont. Riot tried to do the same and failed. They have more than 100 champions yet the game is overall balanced, took years to accomplish that but it was done. I sure Anet can redirect more of its resources to balancing, considering they only have 2 devs working in balance, I would say it is not fair for them to have so much work to be done.

Im down for having options, options are good, say no to being stuck with only one gameplay or meta.

League of Legends also has a Meta. Based on what champions are picked in tournaments/most frequently. But also based on how it’s ‘normal’ to go ap mid, ad bot with support, and a bruiser top. That’s meta. A while ago it used to be ad in mid to get more cs.
Yes, their champs are balanced. But the game finds it’s niche of what works and ends up there.

If you don’t do anything about it, it gets stale.

while a “meta” exist, the amount of variatiuons within it is enormous. You have double AP, rush-ins, poke teams, attrition teams, grab-n-kill teams, roamers, late-game teams vs early game teams, champions that go from farmers to gods, or early gankers into walking menacing tanks. There are plenty of strategies and while certain champions are really strong, the “meta” has been broken with champions which normal players would naver take into another role. That, is versatility.

Right now this is the only things we have dominating; condition stackers (necros, rangers, engis), bunkers which you need 3+ to get them off the point, 5 to kill (rangers, engis, etc) and stealth spammers which either insta gibs you or run away 99% of the time(thieves, thieves, thieves). Anything other than that usually has no real place other than give some boons and hope not to die. Eles have ben nerfed patch after patch, to the point that not even support they can bring to the table, the only thing they can do now a days is hope that their only one trick S/D can burst someone or definitely die trying.

Right now the meta is stagnated and it will take more than ; “we fixed a tool tip..” or “we reduced necros applying all conditions every 8 seconds to every 9 seconds”

im much more impressed by people who have arah weapons and armor on thier main and alts bc that actually is hard to get (well not rly but def harder than a legendary).

Done Arah 5 times, finished it once, and because 2 guys solo’ed the last boss, didnt even get to see it because I (together with 2 more) died walkng there to trash mobs adn we couldnt be reached

I need 500 tokens for the gift and a LOT more for the sets which I actually want some pieces, pointless to say I might as well give up on it :C hahaha

how about if you defeat a series of hard bosses (like liadri) would give you one of the compnonents for legendary. It would mean the user had to beat them at some point rather than just mindlesly farm it up..

It would be awesome if they had a one off PvP map or PvE instance where you could have all traits maxed out, only effects you on that map/instance…

Doubt Anet would ever do it…

But it would be interesting even if it was just a one off 2 week event…

fun mode! Im sure eventually (6-8 years from now at the current pace of things which is not that bad) we will have some of these in PvP, heck, even im PvE! Perhaps even a “zombie” mode where you have to protect a keep from mobs that scale all the time from normal to champions, all this with your guild (like a challenge) and have NPCs that you can buy, and to spice things up, maybe have it such a way that it is TWO guilds fighting each toehrs and they actually have NPCs they can buy and only the NPC can destroy the keeps and you actually have to protect them, sort of like WvW minus the zerg (there has to be a minimun and a maximun people, equal based on the smallest guild) and you have 5 hours to win or something like that.

Guild vs Guild, that would make Guild Wars actually sound like, guild wars!

I thought I was actually going to take credit for finishing the story. I was happy being a commander, having come from a Warmaster and from a nobody. When I finished and saw that I still remained second in command, the guy that is forgotten after a couple of generations, I got sad :/

Please Anet, why couldnt Trahearne remain on the back after discovering the tombs? I was a Warmaster, a fighter, I led armies, lived the battle first handed, why did a scholar had to do a war campaign? Why couldnt he become an advisor and leave the guts to someone who have been on the fray of battle all the time?!

I will start:

Mesmer; each trait line and traits make the mesmer an incredibly different gameplay, clones that dischant boons and conditions on shattering, while crippling foes and applying confusions, that would make all sorts of combinations completely OP.

A close second would be guardian which is on a similar ground.

Imagine that, after beating a certain chain of difficult bosses (which would make Liadri look like a lvl 1 PvE simple mob), which granted you a certain weapon of high status or some scroll or something, you unlocked all traits and tree lines (including the stats related to each of them).Disclaimer: It is not that I want it to happen, im well aware it will never happen, just a “what-if” situation.

In your opinion, what professions would be the strongest? and Why?

Personally Im one to blame as well, you see, when I play, I play alone for the most part. I go around maps clearing objectives at my own pace and order, when people invite me to a party or start talking to me I help them in what I can, but since most of the game is soloable after Im done helping them with whatever they needed I leave the party and continue on my own.

Personally I’ve never liked content that made me had to party up in order to get it done, I have my own schedule and I like doing things on my own. Having said that at the same time it saddens me that there is no reason to make friendships since nothing really requires any sort of partnership (for the most part). It is a “i love people, I hate people” thing. But as far as boss fights , dungeons and the sort, I LOVE the current system. I can join anyone by simply tagging along, dungeons are BYOB kind of thing, I never had issues joining parties for dungeons in other MMOs since I played healer, but it sure it is nice to not have the pressure of having to keep everyone 100%hp and out of aggro.

All I can tell you is this; find a big guild or a guild with a fairly active population, make yourself know, dont be another shy quiet kid that never says anythign and suddenly goes on the chat like; “hey, help me kill x boss”. Say hi all the time, make small chats, make “enemies”, if they have a voice system try to get involved, even if it is only hearing. BEfore you know it you will be known and more likely to be helped when you need it.
