Guild capes and halls?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fyrebrand.4859

Yes, both of these topics have been mentioned many times before, but I’ll give my two cents:

Capes: I would love to be able to have capes in this game, though I don’t think ArenaNet is going to make them. The primary excuse I’ve heard is that capes would cause too many clipping issues, either with other gear or with charr tails, etc. While that may be true, it’s not like this has stopped any other games…

Guild Halls: I honestly don’t see the point. It doesn’t seem very appealing, or functional. But more than that, it gets people out of public areas and into their own private little instanced rooms. I don’t think ArenaNet wants that. They want players to see each other in cities, interacting, etc.

If other professions had auto-attacks that rooted them in place, “turn off auto-attack” would not be seen as an acceptable solution. Tapping 1 repeatedly for Ranger sword is an annoying chore, and it makes trying to hit other keys that much more cumbersome. I can’t imagine holding my push-to-talk key for voice chat while attacking. Not only that, but people are bound to lose DPS if they have no true auto-attack chain. It’s only natural to screw up the timing sometimes, or hold off attacking while considering other moves, or just plain not pressing the button as fast as an auto would perform.

And don’t tell me “It has an evade, so of course you have to be locked into it.” Baloney. Ranger greatsword has an evade, and there is no such issue. But what difference does it make, anyhow? So Ranger has the evade. Other professions have other features on their attacks, like cripple, bleed, might, vulnerability, etc.

Auto-attack is how Rangers do damage with sword. The other two skills are primarily mobility, not high damage. Just what are we supposed to do with sword, if not attack? You wonder why Rangers have a stigma in this game, and why many rangers just stick to bows — well, don’t wonder anymore. Any issues we have are swept under the rug, or dismissed as “the fun, quirky mechanics of Ranger” where in any other context such nonsense would be laughed out of the room.

I feel like people (ANet included) just accept this problem, essentially because “it’s Ranger, all their weapons are supposed to be unwieldy and situational, lulz!” If Warrior had this problem with their auto-attacks, it would be considered a bug and fixed on day one.

I disagree 100% with absolutely everything you said, OP. The primary purpose of daily achievements is to get people logging in on a daily basis, and playing at least for a little bit. I usually complete mine without even having to think about it, and that is more or less how they should be. I just log in, play whatever content I want in whatever zone I want, and get them done in the course of that play.

There is nothing fun about being told to farm 15 mature herb seedlings, or wasting time and materials crafting 20 masterwork items. These are not things that will likely happen naturally. Either players will have to expend special attention and game time just to complete these pointless chores, or they will not do them at all. And in either case, pretty much everyone will be annoyed.

  • Don’t wipe party chat log after you leave a group
  • Please just ditch trait hunting, at least for the ones you used to unlock by leveling. Traits are too crucial to a profession’s functionality, and making them a hassle will only discourage build variety and experimentation.
(Okay, this one seems like more of a “big deal” but would technically be easy)
  • Let us assign names to all of our Ranger pets. Not to our pet slots.

This! By all six gods, THIS!!!!

I’d like them to change the dodge mechanic, because now it’s essentially a spell. I don’t fully accept that you can’t have a limitless dodge capacity, anyway. I’d like a slider to reduce spell particles, because in a zerg fight, I see no tells whatsoever. And I’d like more nuance in dungeon fights, so it’s not about slamming a boss into a corner & melee to the finish. (I’d like a use for non-berserker gear & the more interesting traits) And I’d like my character to have a voice again. I don’t care if it’s a new actor (for the Norn, I’d be rather pleased with a new actor, & the female human – eh.)

Very good combat system

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fyrebrand.4859

Tera does have a comparable action-based combat system. It’s not perfect, though I do like the feeling of having a targeting reticle which always determines where my character’s attacks are aimed. However, it sacrifices as much as it gains. You get locked into animations with some attacks, making it feel awkward and clunky at times. And there’s no real way to target a specific AoE spell — it just appears at a set distance from your character, reducing aiming to visual guesswork.

Besides combat, and some very nice visuals, there is very little to enjoy. Story is virtually non-existant. Quests are just “kill 10 of this, collect 15 of that,” ripped from the MMOs of a decade ago. Crafting is not worth doing. I don’t think you’re allowed in PvP until max level. There is no reason to explore or pay attention to the lore/environment. Monsters are mostly all palette swaps of a few different types. Dungeons are just bland hallways of enemies. Other players are a bad thing to have around 90% of the time, as they steal mobs and gathering nodes — yet you need help to take down open-world mini-bosses as the game progresses. Playing Tera just makes me feel sad that it didn’t turn out to be more.

Black lion keys

Fyrebrand.4859

Uh… have you ever traded gold for gems? On a good day, I can get 80 gems for 10 gold. A single key costs 125 gems. So, no — 1 gold per key is nowhere near reasonable.

However, I do see the wisdom in lowering the price of keys on the gem store somewhat. Farming the personal story is by far the most efficient way to get a key. Trading gold for gems, to get keys, is completely out of the question. I seriously doubt anyone is buying keys from the gem store, unless they really have no free time at all and more money than they know what to do with.

ArenaNet could stand to make a bit more money, if they alter the prices of keys to stay competitive with key farming. However, the scary thing is that this might come with side effects: lowering drop rates from chests, altering the mechanics of farming to make it slower or unprofitable, or creating separate tiers of keys that separate personal story from gem store iterations. They could also offer weapon tickets for sale on the gem store without the RNG — though this would undoubtedly be a step toward phasing out chests/keys completely.

Fyrebrand.4859

Why would you need a ‘excuse’ for way-points

We don’t. Waypoints have always been a major part of the game. GW2 is designed to include them. They are incredibly useful and convenient. They get players to actual game content as fast as possible, without wasting the player’s time. Waypoints, and movement-enhancing skills, render mounts an entirely pointless idea.

You put in mounts simply because it’s fun and it’s a game so should be about fun.

Not everyone agrees that it would be fun. ArenaNet certainly doesn’t seem to think so.
But besides that, no, you don’t just put things in a game because some players think it would be fun. It’s not that simple. They should install new features only if they make sense for GW2 specifically, and gel with the rest of the gameplay. If you’re going to spend time creating a major feature like this, it should be something that clearly makes the game better, and not contradict the mechanics. However, I have seen no reason whatsoever why mounts would be a good thing for GW2. The only things I hear boil down to “because I want it” or “I liked them in other games.”
Well, you can find people who want anything. Some people want in-game marriage. Some people want open-world PvP. Some people want Elves to be a new race. ArenaNet can’t just add every idea people make threads about. They have to choose features carefully, and do what is best for the game. Mounts are not what’s best.

For the people who are against them if you really try to find the real reason why they are so strongly against it it’s in most cases “Because WoW”. Well hate and / or jealousy are not good advisors.

I’m sorry you are not able to understand the objections, then. I alluded to WoW and other traditional MMORPGs in one of my posts, mainly to illustrate that mounts had an important role in those games. Those games were built to require mounts. GW2 is a very different game, where mounts would be redundant at best.
Asking for mounts in GW2 is almost like asking for mana potions, or the ability to craft bandages to heal out of combat. It is an obsolete idea.

I would much rather see gear skins that can be applied to individual pieces, rather than all-or-nothing outfits. I guess the idea of outfits is that they can design more elaborate costumes and not have to worry about any part of it conflicting with other skins. If the outfit is cool enough, I don’t mind. I picked up the Shadow Assassin outfit recently, and could not be more happy with it. It is just awesome!

Also, yeah… what is up with all these comments? Nobody talked about the actual thread topic at all…

Fyrebrand.4859

It’s not just about waypoints, either. MMOs with mounts have gameplay that is designed around them.

  • Quests require you to run back and forth across the zone to find mobs or talk to NPCs.
  • Getting new skills requires you to ride back to a major city and speak to your class trainer, on a regular basis.
  • If you want to get rested XP, you have to log out at an inn. There may not even be one, in the zone you’re questing in.
  • You have to keep your “gathering skill” at an appropriate level, so you must repeatedly farm gathering nodes by riding circles around the zone, even if you don’t need these particular materials. And the nodes will disappear as soon as anyone gathers from them, which means even more riding around the map, hoping to find an untapped node.

Mounts seem like a good thing in these types of MMOs, because playing without a mount is unbearable. But GW2 isn’t built on mandatory fetch quests, competing for mobs and gathering nodes, or running back and forth arbitrarily just to waste time. Mounts would not be a good thing, or serve any purpose, in this game.

In fact, unless the mount had a movement speed buff built-in, they would actually be a burden. On foot, we can use skills that grant swiftness, or which shoot our character forward quickly — things which would not be possible while mounted. Being on a mount would actually be slower than running around on foot. Even the people who say they would like mounts for purely cosmetic reasons: I don’t think you would actually use them for travel on a regular basis. They would be like a transformation tonic, that you only use while standing around waiting for an event to start.

It’s not worth it.

You would have to load extra assets in the game. Imagine having to load 5 additional pieces for each player? Sure they are small, indistinguishable details but the game still has to load it and transmit it. FPS lag would be unbearable.

And when you factor in that almost nobody would even notice these details…it’s just not worth it.

I’m afraid I’m inclined to agree. Extra graphical load for every single character, minimal visual impact. Has to be sized/proportioned according to character race.

And most of it would not be visible under armor, anyway. No one would wear a necklace overtop of their heavy plate armor, or rings on the outside of their gloves.

How about a Kickstarter for new class skills?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

ArenaNet isn’t sitting on a pile of new skill ideas, wishing they had the money to put them in the game. They have not added new skills because they either don’t think the game is ready for them yet, or aren’t confident enough to balance them properly.

Do I wish new skills would be added? Of course! But for whatever reason, the game developers don’t think it’s the thing to do. You can’t form a grass-roots Kickstarter to force a private company to do what you want. And, as has been mentioned, the idea of donating our own money to make the game better is pretty ridiculous. There is already ample opportunity to support the game through the gem store.

Suggestion: Movement Speed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

I don’t see this happening. Combat is designed under the assumption that we move at a set speed. It determines enemy NPC movement speeds, size of AoE damage circles, the time before AoE attacks impact the circle, speed of projectiles and moving objects, size of dungeon environments and PvP arenas, size of gaps to jump over, etc. You can’t just change combat movement speed on a whim, without affecting everything else.

1) Your use of the term “excuse” only concedes that mounts are unnecessary and redundant, but you have an irrational personal compulsion to shoehorn them in anyway. The only way to trick people into thinking they are a good thing is to come up with a contrived plot device that removes alternatives.

2) A lot of people are already strongly against mounts, even with waypoints intact. You aren’t going to win any favour by telling people that getting mounts means disabling waypoints.

Bearbows.. bearbows everywhere

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fyrebrand.4859

People love to complain about “bearbow” rangers because they are an easy target. They’re visually obvious and it takes minimal knowledge of the game to understand a criticism of the build. You don’t even have to know any ranger skills/traits to complain about it; you can just look over and see a guy with a bow standing away from your group stack.

Anti-ranger sentiment in general is also relatively popular, so complaints about them can be posted confidently without much risk of being called out.

I’ll bet there are tons more players out there who run similarly sub-optimal builds on their profession of choice. They just don’t get caught at it, or yelled at, because the mistakes they are making are more subtle and require more depth of experience to criticize. Should that necro be using an axe or a staff? Is that warrior using his adrenaline efficiently enough? I have no idea. So long as they stand on top of the rest of the party and the bosses go down fast, nobody seems to care. But if they see a ranger standing a little off to the side, everyone loses their minds.

I doubt there is a disproportion of bearbow rangers than anything else in the game. I think it is because people are used to hearing complaints about them, and pointing them out, that it sticks in your mind and you take notice when one is around.

I am against it. Not that it would affect me personally either way — I probably would just ignore it — but I don’t think this is a good idea for GW2.

  • It brings real-life relationship drama where it doesn’t belong.
  • It’s a non-sequitur. Asking for in-game marriage in GW2 is completely arbitrary. This game is not a social romance sim about personal relationships and finding your true love. You are only asking for marriage out of habit, because other MMOs may have had it.
  • It’s not a game feature, it’s just surface-level “meta” baloney. What you are asking for is not gameplay, it’s just a request that the game devs formally glorify your real-life romantic endeavours.
  • What percentage of players do you think actually play with their real-life significant other, and would even want to get married? I suspect this is a feature that a small minority of players would even use. It’s far better to develop new content and features that everyone can enjoy.
  • A significant amount of resources will have to be spent, just to develop an irrelevant ceremony that won’t impact the game whatsoever. Devs will have to sit down and discuss what this feature will include, and how it will be implemented. They will have to design costumes, items, and environments. They will have to build the interface and rules for the system, script NPCs, write dialogue, etc. I would much rather see the effort go toward another map or living story chapter.

Dodges were intended to be a limited defensive resource, not something you can spam to avoid every attack thrown at you. Furthermore, endurance regeneration can be augmented by various buffs and traits; I suggest you work on a build that takes advantage of this, if that’s your strategy.

Managing dodges and endurance/vigor is part of the strategy of GW2’s combat system. You might as well be asking for twice the Power, or for every hit to be a critical hit.

Racial Change Impossible?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

Just because you can sum up a solution in a few words (“just reset personal story” or “just remove old racial skills & cultural armor”), that does not mean it will be a simple matter for ArenaNet to implement in the actual game. GW2 was not created with the ability to change race factored in. There is no interface for it, and no built-in way to seek out every single line of code that references your race and then amend it accordingly. There is no method to refund skills in any way, let alone find just the racial skills and delete/replace them. There is no current way to revoke access to your Order’s special vendor after the fact, and no process by which a character wearing cultural armor can have it auto-removed before switching to another race. There is no tag already in the game that will adjust your character’s gear size/proportions, animations, and voice clips, after a “simple” race change.

It’s not impossible to develop a way to change character race, but it is a big job. Do not make the mistake of thinking it will just take a couple clicks and an extra line of code saying “make race change okay.”

Personal story isn’t even a strong argument, could always change race and rework your personal story through some comic like Mass Effect did with Genesis.

So it will be even more work to develop a special interface for that feature. But regardless, I don’t think ArenaNet wants to treat the Personal Story as something to be so easily thrown out. They want players to complete it. And they want players to roll a new character, maybe buy a new character slot, and spend time playing the game, if they want a new race. Everyone’s already doing that anyway, have been since launch. There is nothing in it for ArenaNet to develop this feature.

Racial Change Impossible?

  • I don’t think ArenaNet wants to offer an item that makes you reset the Personal Story.
  • People who want to play as a different race are already rolling a new character to do so.
  • A race change option will require more work (and potential bugs) than are probably worth the trouble. There is the afforementioned Personal Story, as well as cultural armor that is unusable by other races, and racial skills. It’s not just a cosmetic change, it requires a real overhaul of your character and progress.

  • More community involvement. Don’t ignore threads. Including reactions to player suggestions

There is so much activity on the forums — most of it inane, and continually recycled topics — that keeping an active presence here would be a full-time job in itself. I want these people to focus on the actual game, not patronizing every thread asking for flying mounts.

I’ve been playing since launch, with a break here and there, and have seen plenty of devs interacting on the forums in my time. Not sure if this has been in decline lately, but I still don’t really expect this level of interaction with most games. It’s nice when it happens, but random customers should not expect personal responses every time they make a post.

  • Quality of Life enhancements (e.g. Saved Specs)

Not exactly crucial, but I do agree, being able to save sets of gear/traits for different purposes would be really nice. I’d bet this will be integrated at some point.

  • Bug fixes. Check any sub-forum!

Uh… they release bug fixes all the time. Sure, there are some old ones whose continued presence remains puzzling, though.

  • Class and Traits overhaul (I’m sure Rangers are waiting for a bone)

Are you kidding me? There have been skill and trait changes all throughout the lifespan of this game, some of them pretty major. You even referenced the free trait reset patch in your original post!
Funny you mentioned Rangers, because they recently announced some very welcome changes to Ranger skills and traits (as well as Engineer). Check the forums for those professions, you should be able to find the info.

OP, I understand what you are trying to say, but I think you were expecting the wrong things from the sandstorm event in Dry Top. It was not designed to be a dynamic/random weather system; it was designed as a cyclical mechanic of the zone, to stimulate participation in map events.

It would be neat if the open world had an unpredictable weather system, with varying degrees of precipitation, wind, etc., but Dry Top was not an attempt to address this desire. The fact that you wanted sandstorms, and the fact that Dry Top has a sandstorm-themed event cycle, is a coincidence. I think it works really well, as long as you take it for what it is.

I do agree somewhat about the timed nature of the aspect powers, though. After the magnificently-designed Labyrinthine Cliffs, it feels a little cheap to have those abilities kept on a leash. It reminds me of how in the old Mario games, if you got a special power, you could keep it forever, as long as you didn’t get hit or change into something else. But then in Super Mario 64, the special powers were always on a short timer, which guaranteed you could only use them in specific places. I understand Dry Top isn’t intended to be another Labyrinthine Cliffs, but I have to wonder if the time limitation on the aspect abilities is needed.

It’s also really jarring to be fighting an enemy while the zone transitions into a different phase, and have the monster disappear right before your eyes. Really?? That’s actually pretty sloppy.

Minis Giving Passive Bonuses?!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

No thanks.

  • There is no reason to give us another stat boost.
  • It’s nearly impossible to get any minis at all, unless you go to the gem store or trading post.
  • As soon as a stat boost is even hinted at, the trading post prices will skyrocket and supply will go way down. This will make the gem store virtually the only place you can find minis, essentially adding a strong “pay to win” element to the game.
  • Mini packs are randomized, so players wanting a specific mini will become frustrated by RNG.
  • Minis will no longer be for fun. People will feel pressured to only bring their best “stat” minis, rather than the ones they personally like. Everyone will only use a small handful of the “best” minis. You have basically just turned them into an additional equipment slot.
  • Even a tiny stat boost would be pushing it, but the specific bonuses you outlined are incredibly overpowered.
  • Every single player will have a mini out, 100% of the time. People will complain at having to look at all these minis scrambling around everywhere, and ANet will introduce a “do not display minis” toggle in the graphics options.

I would like to see some kind of self-contained mini-game or activity designed around minis, so they have a purpose in the game. But the stat thing just will not work.

[SUGGESTION] Improve Party Kick System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

A reason should ALWAYS have to given. (this could help anet check people who abused the kick system or not.)

This is just paying lip service to combating the problem, but it has no teeth. People already are abusing the kick system without fear of consequences from ANet — making them select a vague “reason” for their kicking is not going to deter anyone. We do not need weak half-measures after the fact. The only thing that will reduce kick abuse are features built into the game which actively prevent frivolous kicks before they occur.

One of the root causes of kick abuse is very simple: one or two individuals have the potential to ruin things for the entire group. There is no good reason to kick anyone from a dungeon party, unless the majority can agree on it. If it’s just one or two people who want someone kicked, then it probably is not a good reason. Most people seem to agree that at least 3 people should be required to agree on a kick, though personally I would rather 4, with a few exceptions.

If you don’t like the instance owner, leave the party yourself.

There is no reason to even have a dungeon “owner” — it serves no function or benefit to the game at all, and exacerbates the problem of not only griefing but also this “5k AP zerker warrior Lv.80 only” nonsense that should not even be happening at all. It has resulted in the LFG tool being virtually ignored by anyone but max-level speed run groups and dungeon sellers.

Imo any of these ‘coming back to Guild Wars 2’ threads where they start off with something like “Is it still bad?” or “convince me to come back” are threads where the person doesn’t actually want to come back. The title shows their real opinion of the game.

Exactly! There should always be a place for questions, criticism, and complaints, but any thread entitled “Gw2 still bad??” ought to be deleted without hesitation.

All I can think of is how if this thread were submitted to the GW2 subreddit, it would be swiftly deleted or downvoted to oblivion within minutes. I wish we could expect such standards here.

Anyone who is genuinely seeking information about the current state of the game should know how to respectfully ask questions about particular topics. Don’t post a hostile troll thread with a pointless list of complaints, then expect a helpful response.

OP, the only thing I have to say to you is if you so strongly despised the aspects of the game you mentioned, there is no amount of improvements that ArenaNet could bring that would change your mind. This game will never be GW1. Personally, I think you are off your nut on a lot of these issues, such as your baffling comments about “empty servers” and how classes/skills are “all almost same.” But if that is what you honestly feel, then you will not find anything different now — and if you think GW2 is a “grind,” then I would simply advise you to steer clear of the MMORPG genre in general. You aren’t going to have a good time.

[SUGGESTION] Improve Party Kick System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fyrebrand.4859

In my opinion, the LFG Tool is completely inappropriate for dungeons. “If you don’t like it, start your own group” is the completely wrong paradigm.

  • There should be no such thing as a “dungeon opener” or an entitled feeling like you “own” a dungeon and everyone else joined “your” group.
  • There should not be an opportunity to ascribe comments or demands to a dungeon in the LFG listing. There should not even be an LFG listing, where you choose a party — you should blindly queue for a random party, like in most other MMOs. “5k AP zerker warrior only” is not a request that deserves to be recognized or enforced
  • There should be no one who is immune from being kicked. Anyone should be able to be removed from the group, as long as 4 out of 5 group members agree. If you can’t come to a consensus about whether an individual is causing a problem, then you probably don’t have a good reason to kick in the first place. Maybe an exception can be made if other players are left AFK for a while.
  • There is no reason to wipe the party chat log after you leave a group or are kicked. That makes no sense at all, and makes it a lot harder to report legit cases of griefing, harassment, offensive language, etc.

I;ve done somethign similiar. But trying to change the camera view because I didn’t like how it was on the video :P

Lol, yeah I roll my mouse’s scroll wheel sometimes to “zoom in.”

When I drink a “tonic,” I usually don’t wind up in anything you might call “town clothes.” :-P

Most are reset when the servers are reset. Some have some other reset timer, but not as long as 24 hours. My thief opened Troll’s End yesterday afternoon, it didn’t get reset at server reset last night, but he opened it this morning.

The reset on the chest doesn’t start when you opened it. It has a set time that it resets, whether you opened it three hours ago or three minutes ago. If you opened the chest in the afternoon, then opened it again the next morning, it does not mean the chest’s reset is less than 24 hours — it means that the chest’s reset occured at some point between the times when you attempted to open it.

If the chests were reset once per day, when the actual days changed over, then you could open it at 11:59pm on Monday, and then again at 12:01am on Tuesday. It does not mean you can open it more than once a day.

Some (embarrassing) real-life ones for me:

  • I’m watching a gameplay video of GW2 and I try to hover my mouse over their skills to see more info
  • I’m looking at a real-life place in Google Maps and try to look for a Waypoint icon to “go” there (not sure what I was expecting)
  • Alan Rickman comes up in conversation, and for some reason I take this as an excuse to bring up how GW2 references his line in Galaxy Quest (I am the only person who cares, or finds this hilarious)

Now, if I buy 1 Heavy Crafting bag for 1 laurel and sell all the materials I got on trading post, then I can buy 100 blueprints from there.

What's your daily routine?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

I honestly don’t have anything resembling a routine. I like to do a bit of everything. Any given day, I might:

  • go run around in the new current map
  • level an alt
  • do some story missions
  • a dungeon
  • a few rounds of PvP
  • a bit of crafting
  • a few cycles of Frostgorge champ farm or Cursed Shore
  • chip away at my world map completion
  • pick a random achievement to polish off
  • WvW
  • Do something with guild (guild missions, fractal, weekly exploration event)

Sometimes I will log on and am just paralyzed from choice, not knowing what I want to do. It’s one of the things I really like about GW2, there is so much variety. In past MMOs, it always felt like there was one or two “chores” on the table that made up the entire game:

  • If not max level, then level.
  • If max level, queue for dungeons (or pvp) while doing daily quests
  • Done? Then log off.

It always seemed to be on server reset, as far as I could tell. But, I haven’t checked to make sure, lately.

Also, note that there is a minimum timer on ALL resource nodes and chests. You cannot open a chest 5 min before daily reset and then open it again right after.

Really? Why would ANet even care to do this? Either way, you can’t open the same chest more than once every 24 hours.

Guild Wars 2 Population/Player Base

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

There is no current data on how many active players there are in GW2, or a even an agreed-upon number of total sales. Anyone who tells you different is either speculating, not telling the whole story, or has an agenda.

Megaservers was implemented because of how dead the maps were in majority of the servers. If you werent in a tier 1-3 server, most maps looked dead.

Not what was asked, neither is it the thread topic. But for that matter, you can go to many zones in WoW and find they are dead. Just because you don’t personally see a lot of players doing the same stuff as you, don’t take it as confirmation of anything.

Anyways, heres a recent link to Top 10 MMOs past year revenue…GW2 is not in it

GW2 is not there because SuperData (the original source of those numbers) very clearly states it is a listing of Top Subscription-Based MMO Titles. Granted, some of those titles have gone free-to-play over the years, and the writers seem to be confused about what qualifies for their list and use “pay-to-play” interchageably with “subscription-based” as if it is the same thing. At the very least, I believe their list is made up of games which all began as subscription-based, and most of them even still have some form of subscription option. I don’t know if they would consider GW2 a “free to play” title, or something else they don’t have a term for, but I am not surprised it isn’t on their list. They are a market research company, not a gaming site, and seem to hold no interest in the realm of video games outside of easily-quantifiable sales numbers.

Give us back the SAB

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

YES! Please make SAB permanent, or at the very least bring it back much more often. You don’t have to make a big deal of it, and although I would appreciate new levels they are not mandatory every single time it returns. Why can’t you just let us play the darn thing!?

The old worlds would get tiersome fast because we can play them 24/7.

1) Baloney. Who are you to tell me what I would find tiresome? SAB is one of my favourite parts of GW2, and I never even got to play World 2 when it came out last time. I never even had the chance to get tired of it.
You know what is really tiresome? Content that I have to grind incessantly within a limited time period because I know it will expire and be taken away for another year afterwards. I would enjoy it a lot more if I could just play it once in a while, at my own pace.
2) I have to ask this every time, because I have never seen a real answer: SO WHAT!? So what, if SAB becomes permanent, and as a result overall interest in it declines over time? Is that a problem? There are plenty of zones and mini-games in GW2 which still exist, and aren’t the most popular things ever. We don’t need to be tricked into thinking anything is more “special” because it keeps being held for ransom.

It would be more like Nintendo launching Super Smash Bros game, and one character will appear for a month and then disappear for a month and then appear again.

You seem to have failed to notice in your analogy, that you have described a completely ridiculous practice that Nintendo has never done, and for good reason. So, I guess I am glad you recognize the silliness of this idea? Pretty sure removing Princess Peach for several months at a time would not make that character “more special.” Nor does keeping character permanently in the game make them “tiresome.”
Also, SAB has been gone a lot longer than a month.

Same with Guild Wars 2, we got Halloween, Winter’s Day, Dragon Bash, Super Adventure Box as events that keeps popping up and then disappears.

1) Oh, great! Then, since Super Adventure Box was originally brought out as an April Fool’s Day activity, then we should have gotten it back on April 1st? Except… we didnt.
2) SAB has nothing to do with any real-world holidays. It could easily have been brought out any time of the year, it wouldn’t matter. And you say “keeps popping up,” as if it returns on a regular basis. It hasn’t. It debuted in April 2013, then came back Sept. 2013. Hasn’t been back since.

To give people something to look forward to and give it replay value.

We should be looking forward to new content, not looking forward to old content being unlocked again for a limited time.

People would replay the old worlds because this is the only time they can do it

And you think that is a good reason to play something, do you? Not because it is fun, or because you feel like it, or because it is a good time for you — but because ArenaNet decided “now is the only time we will let you play this area.”

This makes the content take longer to complete and will keep people busy for a longer time

1) I don’t see how that makes the content longer to complete… it will take the same amount of time, it’s just that players are forced to burn through it all in one hurried burst. And rather than take their time and seek out all the secrets and achievements themselves, they will have to resort to looking up guides in case they can’t get it all done before SAB goes away again. So, players will be completing the content much faster than they normally would be. Especially if they want to collect enough baubles to get the exclusive rewards in time.
2) If SAB is temporary, then anyone who is interested in it basically has to play that primarily, while it is out. They will be playing the rest of the “real” game far less, which means the rest of you grumps who don’t like SAB are going to have a harder time getting people out to your precious Orr temple events, world bosses, LFG dungeons, etc. This is demonstrably bad for the game!

people later on complaining about ’’there’s nothing to do I have already completed everything.’’

People are saying that about the entire game! People are complaining about temporary content, and fun activities being taken away without reason! People are complaining that they want to play SAB, and being told completely ludicrous statements like “No, it should be removed from the game because I personally don’t like it,” or “Not being able to play it makes it fun.”

What do you think about Controller Support?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

People who want to play their MMOs with a controller seem to be just thinking about how to do basic running around solo and allocating attack skills to buttons. You can probably find a way to do most of that fine with a controller, but there is a lot more to an MMO, which requires a keyboard and mouse.

For example, how do you use ground-targeting attacks with a controller? How do you click on a target? How do you participate in any kind of chat? How do you manage your inventory, use items, salvage, change equipment, etc.? How do you search the Trading Post? How do you form a party, use LFG to find a group, or right-click on a party member’s face to Join if you’re in the wrong overflow? How do you intend to change your skills and traits?

Even if you got a controller working for a big of simple combat scenarios, a keyboard and mouse will always be required. You will constantly have to put the gamepad down and go back to keyboard/mouse input.

Guaranteed zero rewards

Easiest solution to everyone’s problems is to have the chests drop items from a smaller loot table. For starters no blues, everything at minimum green. But better yet of course would be a 50/50 chance to get a Rare, and maybe a 1/10 chance to get an exotic.

If that were the case, we would be having this exact same conversation. You would just be saying “For starters no greens, everything at minimum yellow. 50/50 chance to get an exotic, and maybe a 1/10 chance to get an ascended.”
You aren’t talking about better loot, you are just asking for the status quo to bump up a tier. It will just devalue items.

This is one of the consequences of a game with no vertical progression. Max level players are all rolling in Exotics. They don’t need any loot they find. They are never going to stumble on a lucky drop, and say “Wow, awesome! What great gear, I could really use this!”

Chests would be a once a day thing, or they could have them spawn randomly who knows.

Chests are already a once a day thing, at least per character. This would not change anything, as chests are very easy to find in this game if you already know where they are. There are tons of them, which is why ANet can’t make their contents too precious without disturbing the economy.

Maybe some of the more casual players are content to take their time, explore for the fun of it, and be happy they found a cave behind a waterfall with a chest in it. But there are players who would be running around farming 30-40 chests per day.
Even if they were randomized, people could track possible spawn points, or figure out if there were guaranteed spawns. And if you went out exploring and discovered that no chest spawned in the cave you happened to be exploring that day, you would still be mad.

Guaranteed zero rewards

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fyrebrand.4859

Fyrebrand.4859

There are plenty of rewards for exploration. Finding new areas of the map gives you XP, which in itself levels you and gives you skill points. Completing a map gives you a set of rewards as well, including rare items, a pile of crafting materials, a Black Lion Chest Key, etc. It also gives you Achievement Points, which lead to some pretty great rewards at various tiers. And as an indirect side-effect, running around exploring will probably lead to kills, loot, events, gathering, etc. and contribute easily toward your Daily or Monthly achievements.

There are TONS of rewards to just about everything in this game, they are just not instant or immediately obvious. I’m not really sure what you would qualify as a “meaningful” reward… a guaranteed Exotic weapon from every chest? A few gold? Some T6 crafting materials? A feeling like you are the only person in the game who knows about the hidden cave behind the waterfall? Because there are many reasons why that cannot happen, nor does anything equivalent happen in other MMORPGs. In fact, in any other MMOs I’ve played, there has been zero reason to explore. Unless a quest NPC sends you there for something specific, there is no point in going.

If they’re going to put a chest there in every hidden nook and cranny, then the contents need to be randomized or everyone will end up having the same stuff. That’s no fun. If you don’t like the items you got, then sell them, or salvage them into materials and essences of luck. Then use your materials to craft something better, or sell the materials and make a decent chunk of change.

Addressing a misconception about AP

And how do you determine if the player is “decent” or not?

The more important question isn’t how, but when. Do you determine if they are a good player before playing with them, or after?

If you are that serious about keeping a certain degree of efficiency in your dungeon runs, and you’re not even willing to risk playing with someone who may not be up to your standard, then you should make an effort to explore long-term solutions. Join an organized guild, or take a few chances on random folks and add the good ones to your Friends list to reference later. This is how people do it.

You know the phrase “beggars can’t be choosers”? This is the attitude you should have in PUGs. Let’s be honest, you are using LFG because you’re unable to scrape together a group manually. You are asking others to reach out to you, then shooing them away without knowing anything about them, on the assumption that they don’t take the game “seriously enough” for you.
