I think revenants is more than meets the eye :P
We have some cool tricks up our sleeve mist-pocket!
Wat r u, casul?
Not sure if troll or…
First, we all asked LOUDLY to have that #2 in chain changed. Why? reflection mainly. It was just not feeling good.
Second the replaced version does the same damage/effect.
Third AA on sword is basicaly the highest DPS rev can pull out (with UA thrown in the mix).
Get your facts straight, man :P
Wat r u, casul?
Of course, he’s out there playing Revenant all day hahaha
JAJAJA spotted! Jokes aside I guess first week for devs is kind of a nightmare to get through, give him some more days. He has done an amazing job so far, and I can only immagine he needs some breath :P
Always trust Roy, at the end of the day, he’s still Our Boy™ :P
Wat r u, casul?
Commit the heresy of using the Mallyx elite for direct damage along with Shiro instead of condi :^)
not an heresy at all, that kind of hybrid setup works really good!
Wat r u, casul?
im just curious.
Is rev a buff bot? dps?
since HoT came out all ive been doing is HoT maps I havent touched fractals yet. After playing a good amount with all the elite specs, I simply cannot see where Reaper/Herald fit in a team. Mind you, those are 2/3 of my favorite elite specs so far, I just dont know what they bring to a team really. I was thinking Herald would replace warrior, but Berserker elite spec just does way too much damage.
- rev is very high in the rank of dps
- on paper it should be also a good healer but the community hasn’t fully figured ventari yet i guess (and it needs some tweaking imho),
- with glint and jalis we have great support/off-support
as you can see we can almost fill every role, maybe not the best in each, but quoting DnT’s Nike “Rev is one of those classes you’ll be always glad to have nearby”
Ventari has been figured fully before BWE3 :P. BWE3 only made it better.
Yeah as i said on paper looks good, maybe it’s me but it feels really less responsive than any other legend. As you said in another thread rev is all about opportunity skills and cost. Ventari is not very opportunistic since the tablet can’t be played in a reactive way. You have to summo it, and the movement is bound to CD and cast time.
I like move around the tablet but imho there’s no point in destroy it with the elite (since without the tablet you don’t cast a thing) and not having it out on legend swap.
While the heal on trail is super cool it makes it slow, an almost instant movement with a bigger heal just on landing would be much more responsive and “opportunistic”. Other skills are fine.
I already gave this kind of feedback both in BWE2&3 but apparently this is how we are supposed to play it, is just a shame it feels disconnected from the other legends
Wat r u, casul?
You’re using too much Impossible Odds m8 hahaha. Addictive, innit?
haha actually i use that rarely! only if i have to bust my energy before a switch!
Not very much a IO addict…is we speak about phase traversal insted… is not natural at first but keep selecting far enemies and surf through map sith that is AMAZING…i’m half way for core tyria hp completion in short time because that trick speeds the movement by so much :P
Wat r u, casul?
Yeah, of course, that’s what I meant with add, don’t want to take stuff away from PvPers :P
oh god, i read with too much haste and didn’t catched add :-D
figured tho you wouldn’t remove anything, just wanted to point it out still :P
Wat r u, casul?
PS
Sword 5 is awesome for getting the hell out even if you won’t break bar or pull enemy. It still allows you to avoid getting hit and you can phase traversal back to the enemy.
yeah enjoyed that so much until now that i have the shield.
People seem to think rev is flat, but actually we still have to get used…the gameplay opportunities are MASSIVE
Wat r u, casul?
On PvE, which is where I reside, you get the four seconds of Taunt, pretty much wrecking break bars along with Slow.
i might start thinking to use that now that i know…totally went unseen till now :P
Wat r u, casul?
Thanks for the answers
But my question was more like: is there anything else I should know ?
I cope with those easily, but I wanted to know if there’s more.
- hammer #3 has issues with heights too and the impact happens at 900 not 1200 if you aim at full distance
- shooting bastion trait puts on CD the effect of the shield’s Crystal Hybernation (you can cast the shield skill right behind the trait proc, you see the animation but you won’t block nor regenerate health)
- staff #4 doesnt consistently remove conditions
- sword #5 suffers for the same issues of other teleport skills (bugs in terrain)
i don’t remember any other major bug so far
Wat r u, casul?
Take this for double the fun: Improved Aggression
Does it work with forced engagement?
haven’t tried specifically but i’d guess it does… otherwise only other application is the taunt trait… and this would be lame :-D
Wat r u, casul?
all know since bwe2, but are bad beast due to how the game engine works.
For now learn to go around (dont UA or VH near wall and/or just pay attention, dont waste CoR with terrain disparities)

Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I’m going to stop playing Rev in fact I’m probably going to main this guy — I fully expect anet to tune some things back and buff some things (the staff for example feels extremely underwhelming, I don’t even know what its supposed to be it seems like a mix of guardian staff utility and daredevil melee martial artist thing but it kind of does neither well imo). It’s just that for a class with so much utility, a gameplay so simple made me feel like I’m doing it wrong, you know?
I’m lvl 67 now maybe once I get to 80 and unlock herald things will be more engaging, complicated and fun!
aaah here’s the thing! you ain’t 80 yet so you basically just have done basic stuff in core tyria. Well, so, yes, wait for 80 and some difficult content like high fractals, the new maguuma pve, future raids…that you’ll see the reactive gameplay yak cited and how fun rev is
Wat r u, casul?
The reply is really vast to cover in a post, but from your OP i can give a couple of good advices.
First of all, the stats on ascended gear can be switched in the mystic forge (loosing the upgrades already put in that piece). The only real, major, cost is the EXOTIC insigna of the new stat combo that is thrown with it.
So you can start with a combo and change it later.
Since you are coming back oyu probably want to take sometime to get good again at all the mechanics and since the new zones are kinda harder than core tyria, i’d suggest for your first set Soldier stat with fury runes to cover the prec/ferocity loss.
The overall cost is in the “cheap” tail of the craft and once you get better you can swap out.
Soldier’s is also a standard choice for WvW.
For wep/trinkets i’d say to stick to Beserker’s: trinkets are basically “free” since you you get them with tokens (laurels, fractals, guild comandations) except the backpack and ascended weapon crafting is not that bloody expensive, even tho you probably have some ascended chest dropped? (remember you can change stats
)
I guess it’s all, hope it was helpful!
Wat r u, casul?
Well i’d say both! double the stab strip, double the break bar damage → worth in every content for the same purpose
Wat r u, casul?
you have to break his vampiric skill. keep the break bar low and when he does it just break it. Another way is to LoS the skill, like running around stuff…it breaks it (but is harder to pull off if he follows).
Anyway no issues with that, doen first try with other 2 necros, easy when you know how
Wat r u, casul?
Really like this pose

I thought switching legends at 100 energy is bad, because energy always starts at 50 after a swap?
yes indeed, is always worth drop the energy under 50% before swap.
In shiro basically cast a free jade winds and swap out if you need
Wat r u, casul?
Nice initiative! I’m sorta sucked into the whole expansion so for the moment I won’t create particular content, but since i’m a sorta 50/50 PvP/PvE player i’ll make various dungeon/raid/pvp matches video in the next days. When it will happen i’ll update this tread
Wat r u, casul?
Simple rotation for simple PvE.
It gets more interesting in more demanding encounters.
Totally! Try solo a champ
idk, I’d rather have a simple rotation than the Engi’s 59 steps rotation for optimal DPS.
Also this, and since i specifically coming from engi, I prefer a simplier rotation where i can be more engaged in the actual combat than the cooldowns :P (even tho i love my piano feeling on engi
)
Wat r u, casul?
Just wondering because I was running with a necro-condi build fighting off mobs.. took about 10 seconds to kill 1.
Oh look, here comes a Rev… 1 shots it.
Makes me feel like I should just roll rev and drop the condi’s.
rev is REALLY squishy.
its offense capability is great.
but its weaknesses are rather weak heals with long cooldowns.
stun breaks that cost ALOT to use and are very few (you lose like 30-50 charge per use. and they are limited to ~1 per legend. so 10 sec cooldown between that)and their condition removers are also limited. far as i know u have 2 condition removal skills. once again on different legends.
so in short. a rev has 2 legends for stun breaks. 2 for condition removal.
long cooldowns and cost for both
and because u limited to 2 legends. you have either 1 stun break and 2 condition removal. or 2 stun breaks and 1 condition removal.traits give u a 3rd stun break. but overall, rev is very hard to customize to survival.
so think of it as a theif with more hp, more armor. but less speed, less heal(stealth heal thief overkill), and FAR less condition removal(stealth condition removal. stealth spam meta~)
oh. and its ranged capability is REALLY limited. 1 weapon, and while its a good weapon. its not devestating like Ele staff or theif pistols/shortbow or ranger longbow.
the Rev 2h hammer is predictable. but capable.
Rev squishy? Only if you build squishy. You have so many options for hp recovery it’s not even funny. And yes, our heals are a little weaker, but that’s because we get two of them. As for stun breaks, we have the stun breaks inherent in our legends, but we also break stuns when switching. I don’t think any other class has this many stun breaks. Not to mention the amount of stability we get to reduce the need to even use them. The only real weakness I see with revenant is conditions.
Berserker/Marauder Rev is basically a tank when compared to my thief.
yes and no, you can surely have stun breaks and condiclense or resistence but you have to dedicate an entire legend to that, which limits freedom compared to other classes.
Mind you i’m ok with that, and i’m ok with what comes with that, just saying.
Thief is a particular beast since you can almost 3 shot him but the amount of stealth he can pull off is tremendous, effectively resetting the fight at will if he has half brain. What matters in the end is to be not get downed, right? :P
Wat r u, casul?
Since I’m almost always using Shiro/Mallyx for damage or Shiro/Jalis for tough spots I don’t notice much of Ventari or Glint, but I’m pretty sure I’d pay more attention if I used them as often.
Impossible Odds is just so good, you become the ultimate assassin with Super Speed and Quickness.
“What will you do with this true ultimate power??”
Wat r u, casul?
Protective Solace, having 15s of defense right away or 30-31s when full of energy already makes it a very reliable projectile defense, and being able to move it around is something Guardians have always wanted for their Shield of the Avenger.
Purifying Essence is an incredible condition cleanse skill, cleansing 3 conditions from 5 allies on such a short cooldown is great, and the price is paid with the 30 energy cost.
Natural Harmony is a sufficiently balanced, though I feel its base heal is somewhat weak, and the two second delay makes it a bit unreliable.
Energy Expulsion is a pretty good panic button, though one I rarely use.
Ventari’s Will is just awesome 10/10
yeah as i said it minimally tweak some numbers but over the utility are good for me.
Is the tablet movement that is not that “flow-y” but i guess i have to live with that

Do I HAVE to do the HoT story part first to unlock masteries? Because Atm I’m just doing world completion in Central Tyria on my Rev(Lv 80 with tomes) Or does it not matter which I do first?
No.
Is the other way, you need some masteries to progress HoT story but they are completely indipendent.Oh ok, I was wondering about it since he mentioned he unlocked the mastery thing with his Elementalist first before doing his Central Tyria completion.
because masteries are account bound ;-)
Wat r u, casul?
Overall the number a bit low and they just need some tweak.
What baffles me most is the clunkyness of the heal skill. It has cooldown in order to avoid spammability and god knows why it has cast time. Both have to go.
Wat r u, casul?
What’s worse is that in the Mad King’s labyrinth, I think the doors destroy the projectiles without actually shutting off the skill. Haven’t seen that happen anywhere else, though.
Never had that problem in lab.
Those hammers are our mob-tag-stick :-D

They are projectiles and they stop when hitting huge terrain disparities/walls.
I know it sucks, but Roy is into that for some solution. For now, when you are in tight spaces just keep an eye if they stay up
Wat r u, casul?
I’m with you saying i expected at list a little bit more talking, like while idleing, dying or near (i totally hear Shiro say “You disapponted me” when we die
)
we can hope they will add some fluff later, but i won’t hold my breath for it
Wat r u, casul?
Maybe I don’t know about some underlying modifier but mathematically speaking, 51% crit chance is just as good as 99%. When you swing a weapon it either is or isn’t a hit so anything above more than half percentage wise is actually the same chance to hit. A higher percentage would only matter if there were more than two outcomes.
what….are you serious? Sure is or sin’t a crit but how often this happens DOES matter.
In 10 hits, you statistically get 5 crits in first case and let’s say 10 for the other.
If we assume 200% crit damager modifier with 100 damage base per hit this leads to:
- 100dmg * 5normal_hits + 100dmg * 5crit_hits * 2crit_mod = 1500
- 100dmg * 10crit_hits * 2crit_mod = 2000
Really the same thing…only 33% more damage è_è

I am super not excited to have to go hunting hero points again to play with hammer in pve. My understanding is I must essentially hunt down every hero point in all maps to fill my new scapper spec.
Please correct me if I am mistaken because I find this a huge turn off. If I have to redo all the old maps, may as well just retire engi and start fresh with another class. *sad face
you can get 200HP from core tyria and do only 1/2 of HP in HoT maps if you prefer. You actually should have those 200pt if your engi is your main and you have done some world completion
Wat r u, casul?
There are some Maguuma Hero Points that are much easier to complete with Ventari’s insane projectile destruction capabilities.
yeah the one in verdant that require poison mastery with the 3 archers is a joke with ventari. i still hope for a trait to turn that into reflection tho, even in another traitline (like corruption or devastation)
Wat r u, casul?
Disclaimer: For XP amounts I did have numerous boosts on (birthday, xp, item, old exp, festival fireworks, halloween food, utility, utility necklace with utility XP infusion, etc).
So first thing I did when I got in was go on my Elementalist and unlock Masteries by doing the first story step. Second thing was get on my Revenant, get through starting area, then did the scroll + tome leveling. At this point I started running around once my gear was relatively sorted out with Traveler’s runes.
Second thing I did was old world content by getting it’s Hero Points. All I did was mostly go after Hero Points with a few events here and there. I had Pact Commander Training. This took around 12 hours total to complete. My route was:
LA -> Metrica -> Brisbain -> Dry Top -> Silverwastes (5/6 – no Vine Wraith) -> Caledon -> Kessex -> Queensdale -> Gendaran -> Hrathi -> Bloodtide -> Sparkfly -> Straight -> Malachor -> Cursed -> Mount Mael -> Timberline -> Dredgehaunt -> Lornar -> Snowden -> Wayfarer -> Diessa -> Plains of Ashford -> Field of Ruin -> Blazeridge -> Iron Marches -> Fireheart -> Frostgorge (not concerned about spelling, you get the idea)
After all that I was Pact Commander 4/5 and with only 30% of world completion done. To be fair however the WPs and HPs seem more valued XP wise than POIs so good chunk of the XP is gone regardless. I also went into EOTM and got a quick WvW rank which gave me the final point so I got 200 out of Tyria.
From there I went into Maguuma. In addition to Gliding needing to be unlocked base, I went Mushrooms next and then Improved Gliding. Most Hero Points are locked behind Improved Gliding or Mushrooms. After that I would unlock Exalted Lore 1 followed by Nuloch Wallows then back to Gliding till Ley Line Gliding.
Verdant Brink – Some low hanging fruit here (literally) but also a lot (around 3) above in Canopy only available during Helicopter (or easily available then). I ended up 9/11 with 1 in the Canopy missed and 1 requiring Nuloch missed.
Auric Basin – Few locked away behind things like Ley Line gliding and presumably more Exalted stuff, ended up 7/11 only.
Tangled Depths – Many are locked away and only ended up with 4/11. Heavy investment in many lines required it seemd for a lot of them but with 200 from Tyria and 200 from here that was Herald.
Dragon’s Stand – Most seemed locked behind the mapwide event.
That was that. Good times, Herald fully done, and back to finish off Pact Commander
precisely what i’m doing. I just focussed on maguuma first to see the first 2 maps and make first 2 story arcs

Why disabling the glow? it’s like asking to do not have butterflies on mesmer skills or flaming effect on guardian. yeah it stays out of combat but is super cool. Wouldn’t mind an option, sure, but i feel the problem like way down in the queue of things to do.

Thanks for the guide, pretty much what i expected.

You replied to yourself, for different stats and sigils.
Also, “on swap” sigils.
Anyway i think is a techincal limit that comes from out-of-water weapon swap

dual wield means wielding 2 of the same weapon.
Not in this game. I THINK shield worked in beta, but I would have to double check.
It worked in BWE3 with sword and shield.
Dualwielding, in a D&D sense is use proficiently weapons with both hand, so if you lower down that it just means playing with 2 weapons instead of one 2handed.
Didn’t check on launch but since i’m running this with shield i’ll double check as soon as i get home.

Fun fact: The Shiro and Mallyx stances aren’t even the same as the terrestial ones. Shiro elite has no cooldown yet underwater and Mallyx still has displacement. On that note… I should report it…

Haha
Too late!
kitten ! aight, I’ll enjoy the last days of displacement UW :-D

Invocation/Retribution/Herald
Good hybrid build for mid point fighting
No corruption? I feel it necessary for some good condi gameplay

Yeah all bugs already reported. Let the dev work on them
About the heal, i guess works as intended? Otherwise what’s the point of poison? Other skills like necro consume condition heal has the first chunck witohout condi remove and the for each condi removed there’s a bonus, IF i’m not mistaking

Since is not THAT needed, I prefer the dev team on other more pressing stuff. It will be adjusted soon, just be patient
Wat r u, casul?
Here’s a basic list of functional build i’ve tested so far
- full power Shiro/Jalis, devast/retirb/invoc, sword/sword + hammer/staff
- full power Shiro/Glit devast/invoc/herald, sword/shield + hammer/staff
- hybrid Shiro/Mallyx devast/corrupt/invoc, sword/sword + hammer/staff
- hybrid Glint/mallyx corrup/invoc/heral, sword/shield + mace/axe
- bunker Jalis/Glint retrib/invoc/herald, sword/shield + hammer
You can toy with them in every game type (except maybe WvW where i suggest the last for zergs).
Gear should follow the build type adding defensive stats as per you needs.
Just pick a playstyle and go for it. Revenant is so much fun and versatile
Wat r u, casul?
yeah same feeling, the should look into the precast i guess.
Is especially noticeable on the sword since is a thrust, and a bit slow one. They should change it to a slash at least.
Wat r u, casul?
indeed it works that way ;-)
Wat r u, casul?
I have only issues with dragonhunters and daredevils. Rev isn’t overpowered at all imo. Generally I destroy reapers though. What we sorely need as a rev is stability because if we want it now, we are forced to use jalis which is…..meh in pvp
unless u bunker…them hammers are crazy on points :-D
