Feryl Grimsteel (Charr Engineer)
Tarnished Coast
Anyone else annoyed by the lack of Sylvari in the new group? Destiny’s Edge was a big deal because it had 1 of each race, but the new group has 1 Norn, 2 Humans, 1 Asura, and 1-2 Charr (depends on if you count Rytlock as a core member or just a DE member tagging along) and 0 Sylvari. I thought they were setting up Canach to end up joining the group but that never materialized.
I don’t mind having more than 1 (Especially with the Kasmeer-Marjory dynamic), but I hate not having any Sylvari at all. I really think this needs to be addressed; it leaves Sylvari fans feeling left out of the new group dynamic and seems to marginalize the race that was so core to the story. It also leaves the Sylvari elements of the story feeling left out; just imagine what would have gone on with a Sylvari member during The Call that instead got addressed only from the outside.
To be fair and while you have a point, that’s pretty much how Non-Sylvari players have felt for a long time.
LS1, LS2, Expansion, all based on sylvari. Can we move on to the other races now?
Not to mention being told in GW2 launch that the Sylvari were focused on Zhaitan, the great hero of the Orr storyline was a do-no-wrong Sylvari with a cardboard personality,, and humans got sidelined by Sylvari when visiting their holiest of lands.
Choosing the name is nice and all, but when do we get to choose whether we even want to keep adventuring with these characters? I know I don’t.
Hopefully Writ of Persistence will be moved to Zeal, the true symbols trait line, instead of the awkward place in Honor that it currently holds.
Read the thread. Already been covered. Or are you THAT lazy.
This thread has 14 pages.
And to your defense, this thread is made up of a conglomeration of merged threads. The conversation does not exactly flow.
I won’t try to claim GW2 is a difficult game for most of its content. But WoW? Difficult? Maybe like 5% of it, just like GW2.
This. Once upon a time, WoW had difficult open world dungeon areas with elite mobs. Those have been entirely removed. Elite status does not even seem to mean anything anymore when it comes to WoW. They can almost be a walk in the park to solo. If you die in WoW open world PvE you are doing something stupid.
Blizzard wasted over 100mil titan and dropped it without blinking because “it was not fun”. All that raiding didnt keep 5m (and counting) subbed.
Having played WoD and talked with other long-term WoW players, this is not only incredibly reductionistic but also wildly off-point regarding the player issues surrounding WoD. The reasons for quitting included a FAR LARGER list of issues beyond raiding. Garrisons? Ashram PvP? No flying? You hate raids. We get it. But you should at least present other games honestly.

To answer the question: Nope.
Except Dargonhurrdurr. That thing needs to head back to the drawing board.
Except for Dargonhurrdurr. Srsly, send Braham home to learn a real Guardian elite.
Agreed.
Since the vast majority of the community doesn’t like this name, and the initial name for this spec was supposed to be Avenger, why don’t we boycott “Dragonhunter” and just call it “Avenger” between us?
Once upon a thread, people made the claim that this e-spec should not be called the ‘Avenger’ due to possible confusion with the Avengers. Now ArenaNet has released the ‘Daredevil’ e-spec hot behind the heels of the Daredevil Netflix series. Lolz. I guess the ‘Avenger’ is a viable name after all.
Dragonhurrdurr. Now THAT is a memorable profession name.
Very high concept too. ;-p

I wonder what would have happened if it was Logan that became the first revenant instead of rytlok….
Awkward conversations with the spirit of Glint.

So the current characters could shine.
Please, no. The LS1 and LS2 are some of the worst, especially the Biconics. They even make me think of Trahearne fondly.
Devs Ignoring Feedback
Not really “2 hours ago” now.
But it’s kinda funny, right?
Chronomancer & Reaper:
- Popular specializations (see the poll that was posted in the HoT forum)
- Get a nice list of BWE feedback changes
- The same developer
- And said developer bothers to post in the forum of the other two specializations, too
Tempest & Hunter:
- Almost universally hared (see the same poll, or anwhere else really)
- Names don’t fit the specialization (“high level” my small cat)
- List of BWE feedback changes…? MIA.
- The same developer
- And said developer has not posted in the specializations’ forums after the BWE
ArenaNet, could you please let Robert design all other specializations, please?
Robert Gee is far more in touch with his communities through Necro and Mesmer, he also seems to know the classes much better, he really understands the changes he’s making and the big picture of how things go together.
Karl seems utterly lost, he never posts here, totally out of touch with the community and if you saw the footage from HoT PvP he doesn’t seem to understand Guardian well, especially DPS Guardian.
These posts are spot-on!
It’s not as if the melee engineer would lose access to ranged options: grenade kit, elixir gun, mortar kit, etc.
It would be nice though to have a more controlled means of condi dumping.
The way I read Pure of Sight, it applies to all skills, meaning it is also effective for scepter skills and a few staff skills as well at 1-2 utilities. This means you are no pigeon holed into playing a DH with a long bow.
Thinking positively, ANET addressed the feedback on the Chrono and Reaper pretty accurately. The fact that the Tempest and the DH were the two most underwhelming elites in the Beta, and their feedback from the developers hasn’t been published yet, is probably not a coincidence. The developers probably got the surveys and realized they made some mistakes in those Elites, and likewise, realize its going to take more than a few small tweaks to fix them. The feedback for the DH and Tempest will probably be quite time consuming.
Chronomancer and Reaper have the same head developer. Unsurprisingly, the Tempest and the Dragondurrhurr also have the same head developer. Guess which class e-specs revealed so far have been the most conceptually and mechanically disdained?
Ele: I get to become a Tempest and overload my attunements.
Necro: Nice, I get to become death itself and will be called Reaper.
Mesmer: Well, I turn into a Chronomancer and control time. How about you?
Guardian: I will be a Dragonhunter.
Ele: What? O_o
Necro: We all get to hunt dragons, you know?
Mesmer: We are not RPing here, be serious.
Guardian: I really become a Dragonhunter and I get to use my Spear of Justice-
Necro: For the last time, we are not allowed to use underwater weapons on land!
Guardian: It’s not an underwater weapon, it’s my new Virtue. I also get Wings of Re-
Ele: Not this again. You were told we are all getting gliders, they are not really wings!
Guardian: No no, that’s also my new Virtue, I also get a Longbow and Traps-
Necro: No class change! To think you would misunderstand this again…
Ele: Next he is going to say he can have a dragon as pet or mount!
Mesmer: Guardian, I think you’re just confused on who you want to become, and that’s coming from a Mesmer.
Necro: No, he’s just an idiot, just leave him be. Dragonhurrdurr, I swear the stupid things he comes up with sometimes… <shakes head>
Beautiful. Well done!
Dragon Hunter lacks a theme, it can’t decide if it’s an improved Guardian or a Ranger wannabe. So far, all the other elite specializations have built on their respective professions both mechanically and conceptually, giving us truly unique and likeable results. And whilst the Dragon Hunter definitely succeeds in building on the Guardian mechanically, it utterly fails at doing so conceptually.
I believe that rethinking and adjusting the concept is inevitable. Dragon Hunter is a cheap name and a cheap concept, derogatory to the amazing profession it is trying to build upon.
I heard similar sentiments from people in map chat about the DH this weekend.
They are more a side-grade. More useful than your Old virtues in some scenarios, useless in others.
cast time may screw them over in pvp, but im only there for my dailys so
yay \0\
“Who cares about actual profession mechanic effectiveness! They aren’t necessary for dailies!”
I suspect that it may be heavily rooted in a Roman-style legions system in which the well-seasoned veterans received farmlands.
Because when someone is confusing their subjective opinion, with that of objective fact, I find it ridiculous.
Then you misread too much into what I say. Good day, sir. That is all.
It might fall more in-line with the “Tempest”, in that a tempest is a thing rather than a person.
True, but I have seen ‘Tempest’ used for fantasy archetypes. In D&D 3E, the tempest is a dual-wielding class whose fighting style evokes the swirling, circular winds of a tempest.
Are you suggesting that the validity of the name they chose is dependent on your experience in the fantasy archetype? That is ridiculous. I have read a series of 14 best sellers in which one of the main secondary characters in all 14 books, was a forge.
How is that ridiculous when you suggest as much yourself?
Black Lion chests are one of those items that make me curse when I get one as a drop, because it just means having to do another stupid key run to unlock the content.
Mine will probably be human.
Good man. That is the proper choice.
And to the argument about “people said revenant need weapon swap” back in the beta people been saying exactly the same about elementalist and engineer. And yet somehow they have survived without weapon swap, being actually a high skill cap profession, espesially ele being a meta in all game formats, and you cant even replace ele for something else – thats how good ele is.
Because although the Ele and Engi lack weapon swap, they still have swappable weapon skills (gained either through kits or attunements) plus customizable utilities that allow them to overcome particular weapon skill set deficiencies. I honestly have no idea why you repeatedly fail to grasp that obvious point of circumstantial difference between the Ele/Engi and Rev professions.
This, /thread
They said that Rytlock has told people how to become a Revenant so it’s common knowledge. You start as a Revenant wannabe and become one while leveling up (with the current system you basically have a couple of weaponskills, and you slowly become a Guardian/Ele/Revenant/etc).
It’s not like you’re born as a Guardian or as a Revenant.
A good question would be “how is this going to make sense when Rytlock in the first half of the story is a Warrior?”
And I seriously don’t know.Probably the same way as LA story missions work now, with the old LA in sepia tone.
My general recommendation is to simply pretend that your character belonged to another profession for the pre-HoT content and then changed professions. Or pretend that your revenant is experiencing the pre-HoT story content albeit in the Mists.
Or maybe they’ve noticed its a couple of people who are really vocal and the Dev’s aren’t holding a poll or asking for your opinion about how they should name a new class in their setting and NEVER WERE.
That’s an easy way to dismiss the bulk of the people who voiced opposition to the name. You just chalk them up as being part of the vocal minority who just keep posting.
I have a full set of ascended gear. I only bought a couple of demasks because that 5 hour crafting time gate is annoying but for the most part I had so much silk I had to store a good amount in my bank because storage has exceeded the cap twice fold
It’s not 5 hours. It’s a one date gate for crafting one of the damask components.
Legendaries usually require playing most of the game: WvW, PvE dungeons, world completion, etc. Now that fractals have been added to the mix of game modes, should we really be surprised that fractals would be required for new legendaries?
It could use a rename that makes it sound like a proper heroic e-spec and not just a furnace.
Never!! Forge is a great e-spec name!
This name would distinguish us very well from other e-specs and fits well with the engineer. For me this is a name of power, a statement of our possibilities. Speak loudly and compare: the Reaper, the Tempest, the Chronomancer, the Druid and the DragonHunter. The Forge sounds sooo much better.
I vehemently disagree, but you are entitled to your opinion.
What’s driving your resistance to weapon swapping?
From best I can tell? Forced symmetry.
However, despite the clunky-ness, I could see it being pretty cool:
“I’m not just an engineer; I am the Forge. I create the weapons and machines that drive innovation and war; I am the source of power".
Still, something like “Forgeman” would make more sense.
It’s a shame that “Artificer” is already taken by a crafting specialization. Artificer even calls to mind the D&D 3E class from Eberron that created magic items, magical infusions, and mechanical homunculi. But there’s still the Technomancer or the Machinist. I would love to say that trust ArenaNet to come up with an appropriately cool name, but the ‘Dragonhunter’ happened.
True, but the dialogue in the Caithe flashbacks also implies that her Wyld Hunt may have been more ambiguous and something she was trying to figure out. She may have thought that it was over in VoD but when new info came up, then realized that her Wyld Hunt may have involved something else entirely.
The flashbacks take place in 1304/1305, during which time Caithe doesn’t seem to have had a Wyld Hunt yet.
That doesn’t make it ambiguous when she knows what it is 20 years later, after having seen Zhaitan and Kralkatorrik in person.
There are two things that make skeptical of your interpretation, so I will respectfully offer my own.
1) We get this tidbit from her conversation with Niamh:
Caithe: As for me, my Wyld Hunt will likely take me away from here.
Niamh: Last I heard, the exact nature of your Wyld Hunt was still mysterious. Have you had insight into what you’re being called to do?
Caithe: Not exactly. But it’s linked to dragons. I’ll know when the moment comes.
It could be linked with Zhaitan, but she’s not sure. She only knows that it’s linked to dragons.
2) Her Wyld Hunt’s connection with Zhaitan is not fixed:
Kahedins: I fear some will go astray and misinterpret their Wyld Hunts.
Caithe: Is it possible to misinterpret your Wyld Hunt? That’s worth considering.
And this last bit makes me wonder whether Caithe did just that in regards to Zhaitan. Her real Wyld Hunt may very well deal with Glint’s egg.
I’m not saying that this interpretation MUST BE, but I think we should be aware that the narrative is creating the gap for ambiguity to exist. We should allow for this ambiguity to exist, at least for the time being, because we don’t know the complete narrative yet, particularly in regard’s to Caithe’s story as it will extend into HoT.
Something else worth speculating. Let’s take the assumption that the Glint e-spec will get a shield as datamined. Shield is obviously an off-hand weapon. But what will the shield be paired with? There are only two options: sword or mace.
Not sure I understand what you’re actually getting at. Are you suggesting another weapon to be introduced along with the shield?
If I believed there was even the remotest possibility that we would be getting a new main hand, I would love to suggest that possibility, but sadly that’s not the case. What I’m getting at is “Which main hand weapon will the shield’s design assume we are using: sword or mace?”
True, but the dialogue in the Caithe flashbacks also implies that her Wyld Hunt may have been more ambiguous and something she was trying to figure out. She may have thought that it was over in VoD but when new info came up, then realized that her Wyld Hunt may have involved something else entirely.
I think we are all just expecting too much from an mmo storyline I’m gonna go read a book.
Except this is the company that gave us the epic Factions and Nightfall storylines.
Something else worth speculating. Let’s take the assumption that the Glint e-spec will get a shield as datamined. Shield is obviously an off-hand weapon. But what will the shield be paired with? There are only two options: sword or mace.
I think a lot of people miss that point about elite specs. Also it’s so interesting to see that we have so many ninja historians on these forums.
Based on what I have seen with the e-specs so far, I no longer think that’s the case. The e-specs simply do not diverge conceptually or mechanically far enough from the core profession.
I quite like the dynamic that a mixed-race team gives.
Thankfully, Destiny’s Edge 2.0 is not the only mixed-race team and it’s certainly baffling to think that it’s either them or nothing in that regard.
These and uncountable others use romance and love as a plot point, but the characters are not wholly defined by that love.
Romance should be used as a motivating factor, but not be the sole defining characteristic, which predictably results in the terrible fan-fiction quality writing reminiscent of Twilight.
Yes, and that’s why I find the B-Iconics boring. And as much crap as people give Logan about departing for Queen Jennah, that’s far more inline with Middle Age romances and tragedies than Destiny’s Edge 2.0 or whatever you want to call the B-Iconics.
When you think King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, do you think about the whiny portrayal of the movie First Knight (Richard Gere and Sean Connery), or the portrayal in movies such as The Sword in the Stone, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Excalibur?
Honestly? Le Morte d’Arthur and its Norman-influenced courtly romances comes to mind more than anything you have listed. The Once and Future King feels less like an Arthurian fantasy epic and more like its deconstruction for the purpose of modern social commentary.
Also, Lets be honest how many great fantasy epics have the main character’s love relationship at the center of the story telling.
I get your point, but it’s more than you would think: the Homeric Epics, the Greek tragedies, A Thousand and One Nights, and the entire genre of Arthurian Romance.
How else are they going to demonstrate their support for the LGBT movement?
But I agree, that has too much emphasis on the story line…
I welcome support for the LGBT community, but to that end, I also want support to the construction of a good narrative and character development. ArenaNet could also just put in some more minor NPCs and no one making a big deal out of their relationships. Sometimes less is more, though having a prominent LGBT relationship is also beneficial. Any prominent relationship, regardless of the sex or gender of the partners involved, should not detract from the narrative. In the case of the great fantasy epics I listed above, romance enhances the epics and make them memorable as parts of the human condition and frailty.
Oh, wonderful…
Don’t feed it, and we may continue to have a conversation without the threat of having this thread locked.
Anyone who claims that the Ele needs love in the downstate department, but then fails to list the Engineer as also needing love clearly has no place to complain about the downstate.
It could use a rename that makes it sound like a proper heroic e-spec and not just a furnace.
First thing: Lol.
Second thing: Forge sounds pretty heroic. Wouldn’t mind at all if that really does turn out to be the name. Other acceptable names are Tony Stark and Eggman.
“Forge” sounds like an ‘it.’ An object or a location, but not a person, an archetype, or a playstyle.
If Destiny’s Edge 2.0 had even an ounce of the lovable personality that Tybalt has, then they would be in a good place. As it stands though? No. They’re all just too mopey.
I would much rather be hanging out with my character’s order of choice over Trahearne and Destiny’s Edge 2.0.
But Revenant has been data-mined to get shield for the Glint elite spec.
This is where the crux of it all is. Making weapon attack tooltips is actually quite easy on their part; slap some words on a default text box. However, making animations, static artwork, or weapon/armor models is not a small task and takes considerably longer to do. We have seen artwork for the Glint shield, Glint’s abilities, and the Glint legend artwork, but also we have some datamine about the shield abilities. Those may have changed some, but It would be incredibly odd for it to not be Glint and the shield for the Revenant E.spec.
I suspect that those abilities did change. Look at the ones for staff and sword/sword. Those definitely did from what I recall of discrepancies between the datamine and the reveal.
Hello Friands,
It’s certainly amusing that the most iconic guardian – Logan Thackeray – uses a sword and shield combo. He may be the only guardian on any given map who does.
- I use Sword/Shield on 1 Map only, Wich is Battle of Khylo…
Since Logan does not appear in that map, it’s little surprise that only one other guardian would… ;P
Shortbow is an annoying abortion of a ranged weapon. Yes it has good utility but it’s simply no fun to play with for me.
Bring ricochet back + 1200 range for pistols and i’m fine.
1200 range for pistols? The only pistol on 1200 range is the mesmer’s off-hand, and it’s all magic and phantasms.
As far as specializations go, I could think up specializations for every class for days on end. There are some things I would find cool, however, as time progresses:
Something beyond ascended armor: Now I am NOT saying this as a “all our old armor is worthless now” type of thing. I think they should add a higher level of armor, but it should require the previous ascended armor as a crafting ingredient.
Example: Legendary armor crafting that requires ascended piece + whatever else.
By doing this, you’re allowing more progression to be had without taking away from the players who already ventured through crafting the armor.
No, no, no! Given the complete and utter grindfest that Ascended armor already is, particularly in the case of Damask and for people with alts, the idea of a new armor level would likely send others and me into a massive rage.
I find them to be boring, stale, overused characters with little depth or personality. They all strike me as simply children with parental issues playing the parts of adults. I prefer the original Destiny’s Edge over the B-Iconics. One of my biggest hopes going into HoT is that we will get new iconics to replace the B-Iconics.
