Is Guild Wars 2 the only buy to play mmo out there with this good of a quality ? If so, this aspect alone should put Guild Wars 2 at number 1 for mmo’s in my opinion.

I Don’t even bother playing other mmo’s since discovering Guild Wars 2 and not having to pay a monthly subscription.

I’m amazed at how good the quality of the game is without having to charge a monthly subscription.

Anyone else feel this way ? Apologies if this is trolling but I’m impressed.

To the OP: Fair enough. I feel like I have some insight now into why people play a main. Personally, I was always baffled why there seemed to be this insistence on having a “main”. I would often see threads about people who had two characters they liked, but couldn’t choose just one of them; why couldn’t you play both characters at the same time and enjoy both?

For me, I have 5 characters, and all of them are my “mains”. Since the playstyle and aesthetics on each is so different, despite the fact that my progress through the game has been a lot slower than anybody else I know, I’m having a blast and don’t feel burned out in the slightest. I imagine you would find my playstyle completely mind-numbing though. XD

Yes, very mind-numbing lol. All of my remaining slots ( Which are now all empty but one ) will remain empty until the current character is maxed out.

At this point I doubt I will ever need additional character slots.

Guardian or Warrior? Help me Choose Please

I’ve played both to level 80 and I chose Guardian over Warrior.

In my solo experience, because I love soloing, the Guardian has better survivability.

The Guardian has powers that redirects damage back to the attacker which helps you take down large mobs fairly easy.

Also the Guardian has defensive powers that help you take a large amount of damage and stay in the fight.

Guardians, from what I have been told, are outstanding healers which of course is a good thing for Dungeon runs, if you choose to heal.

My favorite weapons for the Guardian is the Great Sword, Torch and Scepter.

If you’re looking to put out a great deal of damage then the Warrior would be the way to go.

I am really only interested in playing my main. I can’t seem to get into any other classes so I guess it’s good in a way that I’m not distracted by a bunch of alts.

Though I sort of feel like I’ve done everything on my Mesmer.

If you’ve done everything on your Mesmer then and only then would I consider making another character and repeating the process.

That’s just me though.

I also need that complete feeling on a character I play, which is why I level pretty much 1 character at a time. I just focus on getting that character up, learning how the profession works, unlocking all the dungeon stories and visiting the meta boss locations, finishing the storymode. At level 80 I’ll look for a balanced set of exotic gear that can be used well for any activity I like (exploring, events, dungeons).

Agreed.

NOOOOOOOO, MUST TO GETZ TO DEH MAX LEVEL AND GEAR FOR RAIDING!!!

Or wait… why?

What raid?

Might as well enjoy all the characters that are fun, and exploring the world, doing all sorts of varied content.

Because the point of this game is what happens from level 1-80, not what happens after.

I disagree. I’m still interested in getting all the exotic level gear and weapons I can obtain. I still want all the dungeon gear and weapons I can obtain. I still want complete and total 100 % map completion. I’m sure I’m leaving out other things, but you get the point.

Once again, I’m not saying this type of gameplay is for everyone, it’s just the way I will play from now on.

Thanks for you reply.

If your goal is to “max a character out” (i.e. you’re interested in the destination), then playing multiple characters is only going to slow you down. Otherwise (i.e. you’re interested in the journey), playing multiple characters at once can be quite enjoyable.

Personally, I played one character of each race simultaneously, and each was built to play different than the rest. The difference in play style and the difference in locations meant I could continuously switch between them without burning out on leveling or world exploration.

Exactly. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying everyone should play this way but for me when mmo playing its going to be maxing one character out at a time.

I need that full complete feeling with a character.

I agree with this…to a point.

At this time I have 6 80s…but I only geared up one of them for “end game” content. Actually I have one character for dungeons, one for WvW, one for open world just running around, and a few I use more rarely.

The thing is, you don’t really have to have BIS gear to do end game content in Guild Wars 2 (except for really high level fractals, which I’m not ever likely to do anyway. I’m up to level 19 now).

I can run any dungeon in the game on any of my 80s, without ascended gear. Stuff like exotics is relatively easy to get with karma, or just dungeon runs.

That’s good to know for future game play, but for me its best to stick with one guy at a time reason being, I like to put all my attention on one guy. I like to connect to the character and be the best I can be with that character.

I’ve learned, while playing mmo’s, that the grind is going to be very long and time consuming, which is the point. There always seems to be new gear and weapons to strive for which I love obtaining ( Just a personal preference ) which makes your character unique and when other players see this you feel as though you’re walking along the path of the Elite players.

I found myself experiencing this when leveling an alt. I would run across a Guardian ( Guardian being my main and now one and only ) looking immortal with high level exotic unique gear and weapons and I would think to myself, probably with a very silly expression on my face, " You know, I could have similar gear and weapons … IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYING MY DANG GONE GAURDIAN INSTEAD OF THIS ALT ! " lol.

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure why I stepped away from the " Play one character at a time " rule when I started playing Guild Wars 2 on the regular but I did and once again, came to the grim reality that making multiple characters just adds on to grind which results in never maxing a single character out and never getting to end game content.

I deleted all of my characters accept or except my main simply because….. I want to get to some end game play and get the higher level gear and cool items which I will never do switching between characters.

I feel for solo players we should definitely stick to one character and one character, at least until that character is maxed out.

Thanks to those that took the time to read this post, I feel so much better now.

I don’t understand how you can all claim the ranger is the best solo profession. They’re terrible at fighting alone.

This has to be a joke.

Ranger is by far the best class in the game at solo PVE, honestly it’s not even close. The only one that can even come close in solo survivability is a Guardian.

If you’re getting downed in PVE with a Ranger you’re doing something REALLY wrong.

I soloed a Guardian to 80 with little to no problem so if the Ranger comes close to that or is better I think I’m gonna jump into the profession being a person fond of soloing.

As far as this Mesmer is going, I may find a group to run with instead of soloing.

I can keep him alive but I find myself retreating a lot when mobs get heavy more so than I did with the Guardian and Warrior professions.

The mesmer is hard to solo, specially the first levels, it gets better at 40 or more, even better at 80. Ranger tho are good solo, you can take almost any quest or mob without much problem since the pet take all the dmg, on solo PvE rangers doesn’t have many issues.

Yeah.I’m at 52 now with the Mesmer so on second thought I might as well get him to 80 before starting on a new character since the grind is so long. Thanks for the information though.

If you approach and study any profession with an open mind, it doesn’t really matter what profession it is.

I hear you. It just seems some professions are geared for certain types of play style.

For example, I soloed a Guardian and Warrior to 80 relatively easy where as I’m currently at level 50 with a Mesmer ( soloing pve ) and its been brutal but fun.

Not really. They are pretty much the worst at low levels. If you go with certain utilities, they can become much more playable at higher level, but even then it’s debatable how good they really are.

The biggest problem, again particularly at lower levels, is that they are melee-focused, extremely squishy, and have the worst Downed State in the game for solo PvE. As they get higher level, they get somewhat better utility but remain very squishy with a terrible downed state, and their offense isn’t substantially better than any other profession.

For average PvE its Enchanter, Defender, 50% HP and Timewarp. These are just my “default” skills, I vary them quite often depending on the situation. Why no stun breakers and such? So pointless when mobs need to be at least 5+ to even make your HP go down below 80%.

Also it depends on how you mean “soloing PvE”. Soloing Arah or soloing a group event/champion in a level 20 zone? Or just running through a zone killing a random wolf by accidentally sneezing at it? Yeah it doesnt require any utility slots.

Soloing pve as in leveling up to 80 solo. And when you say " Enchanter" are you referring to Phantasmal Disenchanter ?

How are you shooting past your target? GS’s auto-attack doesn’t pierce past enemies. Unless you’re clicking other enemies by accident during the fight you shouldn’t have issues, worst case you’ll hit enemies between you and your target.

But yes, GS is best at range. Once the enemy has closed, you’ve used your knockback, and mirror blade is on CD (it’s best at close range) you should swap to something else.

I didn’t explain my technique when I stated that I miss the intended target at times.

I like to circle a lot using strife left and right when I’m swarmed by enemies. I’m using a gaming mouse, so it’s easy for me to do this. When circling, I will attack while being chased and pick off the enemy while taking very little damage do to the circling. Now with the staff I am able to do this successfully because even at close range, the orb that shoots from the staff bounces between the enemy and hits whatever is closest.

Now when doing the same technique with the great sword, I will disengage the closest target and hit something way of yonder while the closest enemy or enemies, are taking no damage and eventually takes me out lol.

learning 75 % more of the class by using all 4 elements you say.

hmm.. no.. and yes.

Yes. only if you play the legendary Dagger/Dagger troll specc.

No, if you use any other weapon.

the second you change atunement. you lose 50 % dmg of the fire capable of.
(and fire is still low/medium dmg).

you need abit of humor for this part.
But this is actually what i see at the moment, and how the designers have made it.
(in a weird way).

*Iam the Great ELEMENTAL MAGUS…. BEHOLD.. i master ALL elements.
FIRE… WATER… AIR… EARTH…

Let my burning fire from below taste you… “pyro-flamus-lava-fontanus” (waving staff).

HEY… you… kitten .. yes you… stand still… iam trying to cast my might lava font on you.

your still moving??… ok.. let me show you my REAL POWER…
BEHOLD… … “cometukittenus-earthus”…
hey… you are supposed to stand still in my meteor shower… stop moving away from my MIGHTY AOE…

for your insolence of moving when iam trying to hit you…
i will DROWN YOU with my water…
“splash splash”…wtf is this crap…………..

meanwhile, his “friends”
the brotherhood of the sign of: “Dagger/Dagger”.. is laughing… … …*

lol…funny stuff.

I think it depends on your build. I’m going for a tanky build with high survivability so staying in fire for the majority of combat works perfect for me.However, when I get into trouble, I do find myself jumping into air and speeding off lol…

it is possible to level in pve with only fire. i did with staff.
but you have to play tank.

just autoattacking down mobs is… very very boring. and deal very very little dmg.
you have to put down lava font and tank mobs in it. (Still very low dmg).

but staying in only 1 atunement. you will realy start to hate your elemental.
you are stupidly weak when using staff, and since you have to tank your mobs in your aoe lava font… well.. you get the picture..

You could jump into water and throw down a healing rain..
But then you are locked out from fire, and now have even lower dmg.

And, since we only have 1 skill bar to use…
Elemental in my opinion.. is realy realy stupidly designed.

IF you have 4 skill bars.. (like most games wich requires alot of skills).
and also posibility to macro key binds more efficient.
Elemental whouldnt be the incredibly, stupid weak class, as it is now.

Okay. My plan will be to dump all my trait skill points into fire and earth. I’m thinking with all my trait points going into fire that will max out fire damage and with all the remaining points in earth this should max out toughness. I’m not familiar with what trait skills do what with Elementalist so whatever gives vitality I would say drop the remaining 10 skill points into that.

Then I’m going to invest in power vitality and toughness in light armor and mods, the same in trinkets, and power condition damage and either vitality or toughness in weapons.

As far as weapons go, since Elementalist can’t weapon swap in combat, I’m thinking staff, as you’ve all suggested and dual or double daggers.

I think it depends on the challenge of the content. For easier content (e.g. everything but fractals and PvP), your group probably won’t need help surviving and max damage dictates that you stay in fire. I’d recommend 30/10/0/10/20 with Pyromancer’s Puissiance.

Do the trait points still work in your favor if you’re staying in fire or do you have to switch to that attunement to reap the benefits of the trait points ?

For example. If you put trait points on earth traits, lets say to raise toughness, will the toughness still work for you while in fire attunement ?

Also, can you solo pve from 0 to 80 only using the fire attunement ?

In PvE I guess if you trait correctly it has an alright amount of damage. However, you can only feasibly play this way if you are using a Staff and have a team to cover you, so don’t bother with it if you want to do anything but sit back and spam Lava Font all day. It is also arguable that the amount of utility you sacrifice by refusing to switch elements is detrimental to your overall performance, as well as the performance of anybody you decide to play with.

Yeah, I’ve been watching some video’s on youtube and from what I’ve seen, its a must that you learn and switch between attunements to stay alive and deal the maximum amount of damage. No point in playing a profession in handicap mode.
