(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
I have both at lvl 80 since September.
Here is my feedback.
“Fun”
Equally fun, engaging and adrenalinic vs hard content, equally boring vs easy content.
“Damage”
Warrior will always deal tons more DPS than even the glassiest Guardian, except maybe in the case of a shout heal build.
“Survivability”
Guardian, uncontested.
With Altruistic Healing+boon duration you cannot die unless you want it (or your team is dead and you’re heavily CC’d).
Ultimately here is the verdict for me:
- if you want to play DPS go Warrior because a DPS Guardian deals pretty low DPS in comparison and supports very little when using that build.
- if you want to play team support / tank go Guardian because Warrior is not immortal like Guardian regardless of gear/build.
He uses Rifle vs bosses and Longbow vs trash as his secondary set.
I’m not sure what you mean by asking if the build is ok for a beginner…
I mean, if you know how to use Axe and Shield, know how to dodge and time Endure Pain correctly, you should have no problem playing this.
Of course though, the more you play a build the better you become at it.
But overall this is the most fail-safe build I can think of, you have plenty of room for mistake.
A lot of people forgets some core facts that made GW2 the way it is, which is not Anet’s fault but rather fault of the majority of this community.
1) When this game’s progression was “cosmetic only”, this forum was a big hole of complaints that GW2 had “no endgame” because “there is no carrot”.
2) As a consequence, Anet created a progression system that gives you a bit more power, but were smart enough to make it so some items have “time gating” so that the aforementioned people cannot simply grind it out and come here again crying “no endgame”:
3) As another consequence a part of the community is unhappy.
But realistically, how many are we? 5%? 10%?
Is Anet supposed to not cater to their 3 millions, but to us 200 thousands?
Majority all asked for progression and you’ve been given it.
Majority asked for a lasting endgame and they made it so you can’t burn your way to the carrot (DR, time gates, RNG, etc).
When you think about it, all of what we have now is exactly what the majority wanted.
Maybe we should realize that players like us who wanted a cosmetic progression etc etc simply aren’t enough to make GW2 successful.
The majority of MMO gamers are still addicted to gear progression – howevery irrelevant and minimal it is like in our case here.
Luckily, Anet was genius enough to not break the formula; there is no required grinding as you can get anything by playing normally, and the new gear progression is not a major factor (nor is gear in general) compared to skill.
They managed to make both playstyles viable.
Still, the whole “I want to play how I want” is a chimera – no game exists that allows you to do whatever you want, not even sandbox games went that far go figure a themepark MMO.
3 millions players means 3 millions “ways to play the game”. You cannot create a game that can be played in 3 millions ways.
MMO themeparks will always offer a few “games” that can be played in certain ways etc, but it’s still a themepark.
1) Brawn is changed to give 25%/50%/75% bonus to burst skills vs mobs only.
Makes burst skills worth using in PvE, doesn’t touch PvP balance.
2) Slashing Power makes Arcing Slice give the Fury bonus to the team as well.
3) Sharpened Axes makes Eviscerate place 20 stacks of vulnerability for 5s.
That’s all.
Going PVT basically makes you good at nothing.
You hit for less than a DPS Guardian and survive/support less than a Support Guardian, what’s the point?
Roll a Guardian if you want that.
Go like this.
5400 E.Power (1000 less than a full zerker GS, 1500 more than a shouter, it’spretty good)
3 forms of invulnerability (19.5s invul every 90s, it means 21.6% of the time you are invulnerable)
31.4% damage reduction (good enough but not high enough to make you into an aggro magnet)
690.5 hp/second (120 adren health, 344 food, 226.5 sigil)
86.5% crit chance 250% crit damage
Buff people in 600 radius with Fury+Swift+Might every 10s if you’re tanking (stacks with FGJ)
Tanky, good DPS, boosting team offense… that’s a very effective build, one of my guildies is using it, he even bought the legendary shield with the book on it for how much he loves it.
I just send him foward to nullify the initial 50k-100k damage of mobs and jump in myself to deal more DPS, stuff dies and we dont – lots of fun.
It works on Endure Pain.
Just watch the cooldown timer, untraited it goes off at 85 (aka 5 seconds) while traited it goes off halfway in 84 (6 seconds and something).
I still believe that trait should also reduce stance cooldowns.
Stances are basically our only utilities without a CD reduction trait.
Warriors who bunker
What.
I’m starting to get back into GW2 again, and I wanted to start fresh. I’ve never gotten far on any of my characters, I think the top level I got to was 8 on an engineer. I want to know what the best class is for a long-lasting character, you know, that’s super fantastic when you get to level 80? My mind is on a guardian, because I like how it does exceptional damage, and well as buffing and healing. I just wanted to here everyone else’s opinion on it.
Guardian is pretty much immortal, but forget about “exceptional damage”.
A common Warrior doubles the DPS of the glassiest Guardian.
Please dont be another GS Guardian specced full DPS and doing very little support thus being carried by your team.
1) Pets have the same Agony resistance as the owner.
This is a mere requirement for Ele/Necro/Thief pet builds to not be completely useless in Fractals, as right now pets get 1-2shot by agony ticks due to zero AR.
2) Pets evade attacks when you dodge.
This is fundamental since this game requires dodging, it must be done in order to just make pets viable vs the oneshot mechanics (or dodge-checks as I call them).
Two changes and you would unlock a ton of PvE builds.
Forgal is alive for sure.
It takes 1000 risens just to shave him, go figure hurt him or, lol, kill him.
Holy trinity =
GS warrior for DPS/burst
Guardian as the tank/support
Mesmer (aka walking Time Warp) for supportAnything besides that is just a nice addition to the group (sadly). Good thing is this is only PvE.
That’s not remotely true.
Necros (esp after buff) are extremely good for 25 vulnerability stacking on AoE basis, proper Engi heals a lot while stacking tons of debuffs… it’s just that people so far only learned Warrior/Guard/Mes metas in PvE, but there is much better around.
There is no trinity just people with no imagination nor knowledge of other setups than War/Mes/Guard
Meanwhile, the team Elementalist attuned to water and did a dodge roll for close to the same effect and it didn’t cost him a single utility slot. -_-
Yup, and guess what? he isn’t even wasting all of his utilities or dealing crap DPS like all shout “warriors” out there.
I’m sure I’ll have to repeat the following for months and it won’t be enough but I’m not tired yet to try: Shout healing is support. It’s flat-out embarassing for self-survivability.
The self-survivability from shout healing is ridiculous compared to other tools Warriors have to survive.
The amount of damage negated by one Endure Pain/Defy Pain/Shield block is worth hours of healing shouts, and guess what? Those skills are improved/given by the, uh… “Defense” tree!
The day Warriors start realizing the Defense tree is for Defense (duh!) and the Tactics one is for support I’m running through the city naked until I’m arrested by police.
If you want to get defensive while dealing good DPS go like this, EP+DP, GS evade, 120hp/s and 344hp/s from food, while 1000 E.power more than a shouter (21.6% invulnerability uptime).
If you want even more get a shield into it and god if you manage to die with this you really wanted it.
(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
Situational.
Vs stationary targets GS is higher DPS, vs large AoE fights A/A is more, vs single target mobile fights A/M is (only if you don’t have an Axe necro tho).
People who take it a little bit more seriously, wants to be able to play those classes to their fullest potential…not half kitten them.
I have played my chars with exotics and ascended, have yet to see a noticiable potential increase.
Having a non-min/max’d build (like 95% of people in the game have) alone is like wearing greens if we were to go that route.
Game is full of shout warriors, dps-wannabe guardians, full glass thieves, and let alone rangers and necros… whether they wear ascended or exotics they’re still far below a fully min/max’d green-geared player on a proper build.
Just pointing out how ironic it is that most people are so obsessed by item stats when their character isn’t using half of its potential due to a poor usage/build.
Anet,
A guild I’m currently in is in another server, but that was no issue until missions.
I have some questions now though:
1. Is there a way I can give or use influence to the guild?
2. Will guild missions give me and them bonuses for partecipating with them?
3. I accumulated 12k influence on my server for this guild, is there any way I can “send” it to their server, or “use” it so to improve the guild in its native server?
4. If none of the above is possible, is there any plan to allow guild members from other servers to help the guild in its native server (through influence or guild missions)?
The irony of this is that gating was created as a counter for grinders.
The habit of people in MMO to burn all content immediately greatly undermines the longevity of the game and creates big disparities from casual players and hardcore players, therefore companies are forced to counter this by placing gates that prevent players from exhausting content faster than they should.
These “gates” are a mere measure to prevent people to use grinding to get to things faster than it’s intended to.
Some people have completely mistaken what Anet meant by “holy trinity”.
Trinity is the mechanic to have one class take all aggro, one do all the healing and others do DPS.
That’s the most basic and obsolete form of team composition right there.
GW2’s simply makes everyone able to take beating, deal damage and heal himself, therefore making everyone into a tank+dps+healer and nullifying that system (this was almost all present in GW1 as well, except we still had healers).
On top of this you can decide to specialize in one particular beanch like dealing damage, controlling, supporting or debuffing – but these are mere specialization they have nothing to do with threat-tanking/full healing etc.
The idea was to do away with every class being locked into doing one role and generally teams relying on tank/healer completely, and they succeeded at this.
I for one wouldn’t play another MMO unless it allowed me such freedom, I’m long tired to be locked in one role.
I’m not sure why Anet doesn’t just add “clean” gear and then we can place 3 inscriptions with one stat each.
That way we don’t need 8,000 versions of the same gear.
Time gate is to prevent people from grinding out stuff faster than they should.
It works much better than requiring 8000 of 1 item.
Being in my mid 30’s I remember the days of playing video games because I just enjoyed playing whatever game it was I was playing at the time. It had nothing to do with any kind of ingame rewards, stats, online “friends”, or playing a game just so I can find everything I didn’t like about it and kitten to other people about said game.
And back in the days we didn’t use to want everything dumbed down to easymode, we adopted tactics/strategies to overcome difficulty.
Now people want a reward chase but also want rewards easy to obtain (???).
They indeed give some noticiable benefits.
But what is the problem about this? You do dailies/guild missions/fractals and get your set.
Exotic is so easy to get it isn’t even funny. If you dont like the stat difference then play all those MMOs that give you full stats the moment you ding the cap.
Yes they broke the manifesto yadda yadda, the majority seems to want it this way so we either deal with it or quit – it’s not going to change.
If you try to melee the Volcano boss then you’re just simply kitten
Not true.
Actually, meleeing Imbued is almost an exploit as it makes the fight a joke.
If you do so the Imbued will continue to use the “fly and stomp” skill thing on you and never focus your team.
Simply put, rush to him, HB, when he goes up in the sky immediately whirl away, rinse and repeat.
If whirl is on CD simply rupt HB and double dodge away.
When adds spawn you break bubble and then stop hitting the boss completely (as should your team if they know how to play), burst adds down then continue the above strategy.
Your team will be immensely thankful to you that you made the hardest boss in fractals into a joke.
Or you could spam Rifle and shout healz from distance while your team dies as all bad Warriors do.

Cavalier/Zerk IMO gives best dps/defense ratio, especially for hammer builds that use unsuspecting foe. Hitting stunned targets literally means getting 50% crit chance
~1050 precisions for free (1% is about 21 or so precision). Also since obtaining perma fury for warriors is so easy, and with highest base health, a full zerk would lose to a cavalier/zerk geared warrior.almost 39% dmg reduction while still getting 50% consistent crit chance and 100% on earthshaker and shield bash (+ whatever attacks are done while opponent is still stunned). I two shotted a glass thief in WvW today (Earthshaker 5.6k crit, 6.4k crit on backbreaker). Ill get screenies next time >.>
Edit: Of course i didnt get accesories yet, but I plan to aim for full cavalier trinkets.
^This
Cav all the way.
Ascended gear is being rolled out piece-by-piece so that we constantly have something new to get, and is tied to specific activities (dailies/fracts/guild missions) so that we do such activities.
Why are they doing this? Simple, when they released Lost Shores they realized that people won’t touch certain content without a statistical incentive (infact LS map was barely visited), so they keep tieing new content to one piece of new gear.
Making it craftable/sellable would obviously defeat its whole point, and it’s pointless that you make threads asking this.
The problem with this method is, what happens when all Ascended gear is released?
They won’t have any more carrots to stick to new content so either the new content will be unrelated to gear progression, or there will be a new tier tied to it.

Dailies gets you back to Tyria now, somewhat… I still hate kill X mobs etc.
But it’s much better than how it was before. At least sometimes we get good dailies, before they were all fetch quests.
It’s a Guardian. Aka no cripple (a single chill but meh, lol).
They have a couple gap closers, you have Rifle butt and GS whirl+rush to get away.
Cripplkite with Rifle until boons are over then stomp him in 3 hits.
How do you do this glitch?
No.
This would defeat the whole point of multi-guilding, as guilds would ask players to represent their guild only to get rewards.
Also, representing another guild doesn’t imply you’re not loyal to your main one; most people just use side-guilds as player hubs to pick people from to play with.
Banners don’t cure conditions
Shake it off trait/utility slotted when conditions will be present, problem solved.
It’s useless to have condition removal always when you only need it in specific situations.
This is actually a point in favor of banners; a shout build is forced to use SIO even when conditions aren’t present or important or when there is another person removing them effectively – or even turning them to boons.
Banners can be changed according to situations instead.
Banners don’t have burst healing available
True.
Banners don’t move
Regeneration actually stacks and stays with you even if you go far far away.
Shouts don’t continue working on faraway people, and limited to 300 less radius than shouts.
Banner of tactics is clunky as hell to use and costs DPS, especially compared to insta-shouts
???
It’s about tradeoffs
More like ripoffs
(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
Yea, that’s what I always think when I Look at shout builds.
This isn’t a build I’m utilizing, just thinking about.
What build do you use?
I have 2 builds mainly (2 gear sets).
One is pure DPS 100% crit 7000 Effective Power while buffing team with Might/Fury/Swift, aka this (Truffle steak+Sup Sharp stone).
The other is this, a safer one I use for “hard” content with 27% DR, 5300 E.Power and still buffs to allies. (Omnom Pie+Maint Oil).
Now that I think about it, the first version has 75% more effective power than a shout build (which nears 4000 if min/max’d), the second 32.5% more.
(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
The major fail in the shout build is that you sacrifice other very important skills to get 3 shouts.
Endure pain can block even 50k dmg if used properly, I cannot see myself without it.
Balanced stance is very useful too.
Why not just use banners?
They have wider radius, can’t be wasted in overheals like shouts, won’t rob all your utility slots.
On a build like this they heal about 200hp/s which is as much as shout healing heals per second, but you can still use Endure Pain and another utility like FGJ.
Plus you can heal your team and yourself with banner of tactics.
How far behind do you fall of players that are specced for their own damage? Not talking about glass cannons, but people with reasonable toughness?
1500-2000 less Effective Power.
About 20-25% less damage.

I just helped out guildies who couldn’t get through frac40, with my support build they never downed once.
It’s not even “full” support as I still have 40% crit or so.
100% protection duration, massive amounts of crazy team healing and 12might + Xmight from VoJ while being pratically invincible is much better than “Hey I just hit this mob for 4k, Warrior friend! I almost matched the final hit of HB! Hey did you just die due to no Protection? Sorry… I so wanted to deal some DPS”.
But I realize most people who play Guardians will just think they’re dealing good DPS etc etc.
So the “note to new Guardians” should rather be: You are not a DPS. A Ranger pet outdamages you. You give perma protection and crazy heals, do not dump them to hit mobs for nothing on glass gear.
I agree with the response.
Encounters should be toned for a “clean” team with no buffs.
Cons dont need to become mandatory (again? remember GW1) to complete content.
Please don’t cave in to the vocal minority. This is a good change and you were right into giving it an internal cooldown.
Warriors will finally learn how to play warriors without broken food buffs. They will eventually adapt and shut up.
I played my warrior without Onom ghost and I did fine. They will eventually learn to play just like I did.
Yup some people here really needs to l2p.
I’m actually happy for the change so we see who are the real good Warriors and who are the bad ones.
Full AR you mean 35AR right?
With that amount you only get 6% of your health dmg from agony.
Pin Down is quite strong now, the bleed for me is 14s is does 4,400 bleed dmg with 0 might.
If your ability to play dungeons relied completely on that food you simply were a bad Warrior.
I can do everything up to 40 with no issues.
Maybe try to not use a CoF1 build in content that requires some skill, learn to dodge properly and use Endure Pain to prevent spikes. That’s about it.
Stop thinking that shout healing is survivability, it isn’t. It’s support.
Survivability is dodging, EP and evading.
Wasting 3 utility slots for 1.3k heals is Wammo GW1 stuff.
(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
No one cares of this? hmmm.
Here is a couple truths not everyone has understood yet:
1) a Warrior will never have, on any build, the damage reduction and healing a Guardian has.
2) a Guardial will never have, on any build, the DPS of a Warrior.
Going full tank on a Warrior or full DPS on a Guardian is equally, terribly inefficient.
This is why I refuse to take full soldier Warriors and full DPS Guardians in my team.
A tanky Guardian will do much better than a soldier Warrior for both himself and the team.
A DPS Warrior will do much better than a DPS Guardian.
Don’t try to do what another class can do much better, do what your class does better.
Run Twilight Arbor saying that with a pug group, the dogs pretty much wiped our entire group due to the aggro I got, I was downed instantly, before I could at least heal up with my pies and try to tank the dogs for a bit as people killed them, but now that is not a viable option.
Honestly, I am angry a bit because there was nobody complaining about the pie at all in wvwvw or any forum, it was a fun and valid mechanic that was not overpowered due the nature of how dungeons worked (no healers.) (high burst melee damage.)
So you’re claiming that dogs can only be done with broken healing food? Please.
I’ve done TA way before I even used healing food.
If you really can’t play without OP pies it was a L2P issue, go with a build like this and you can’t really die that easily.
You get 600hp/s not counting procs from Blood sigil, 13 sec of invulnerability… I’d say it can’t really get more foolproof than this.
Then once you improve you can work up to a more zerkyish build.
(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
I ran my daily frac 30 with my usual 20/20/0/10/20 build, full zerk w/ cavalier trinkets, boon runes, omnom pies… worked as usual.
Well-timed EP/Surge plus 344hp/s kept me alive as usual.
If your build only worked with uncapped food then it was a really bad build, or… a bad player.
Currently pets have 0 AR so many builds/skills are unusable in fractals 10+ (elementals, minions, etc) as pets die in a few seconds of Agony.
Is there any plan to have their AR match the owner’s?
We’ve seen good fixes/buffs to pets this patch but without AR resist we still can’t use them in fract :/
Your build is still viable OP, if you play it out well 344hp/s are enough.
Of course it’s not as easy as before tho.
I see the doom and gloomers are out in full force. “Oh, it’s all over now. Oh, we’re totally excluded from this content. Oh, Anet sucks. Oh, Anet doesn’t listen. Oh, sPvP is totally ruined.”
What a joke. Try being less drama queens please – quitting a game you don’t pay for monthly that has given you 10x any content that a single player game can offer is laughable. Let me know when you try another MMO or go back to one. The grass ain’t greener and you’ll come crawling back.
But please, keep up the amusement.
Agreed completely.
Gamers are so whiny nowadays, they want everything handed to them immediately and without effort, and everyone think they should be able to access anything at any given time. Bah.
If nowadays gamers lived in the ‘90s, you’d see them complaining in the Nes forum that level 3 of world 1 in Super Mario should be nerfed and made easier, that Tetris has difficulty levels and therefore is “gating” people, etc.
(edited by HannaDeFreitas.4236)
Lol you guys make it seem like classes were based on that food.
Really? The food wasn’t required for anything, it just led to a few exploits where you would heal for crazy amounts in a few seconds.
It still heals 344hp/s for me, that’s ok.
@Rifter
1 second.
Are you counting the bit of precision you get in that calculation for overall crit chance? That should bring up the statistical difference between the foods.
Not sure why some people have said so, but people keep mentioning the food having a 2sec internal cooldown. Has it been confirmed as a 1sec cooldown?
Also, the current price of Omnomberry Pie is over 4 silver each. They cost over 9x more than Mango Pie for 3x the effect ^^
I just tested it, cooldown is one second.
It healed me for 344hp, not sure if this is tied to healing power (I have 50 healing power from boon duration runes).
Definitely still the best healing we can get.
It isn’t any less faulty. GW is a completely different type of game.
GW2 needs to be played with its own mentality, you can’t have a game that offers a new playstyle and play it with an old one.
Try new things sometimes.
You know, there is only one mentality of GW1 that also works with GW2.
Anet makes difficult things, people cry until it gets easier, Anet makes things easier.
They’re doing the same in GW2; they made all dungeons much easier after you all cried about them so much back in the launch days, they made looting easier, they made almost everything foolproof.
That’s the only major flaw Anet has for me, the fact they dumb everything down when people cry about it.
So, you might try this last option.
One week or two of complaint threads should exhaust them and have them and you all easy mission access and even make challenges easier.
That’s what always happened in GW1 and is happening in GW2, but can you give me one week to try the properly difficult stuff before it’s made babyproof? Pretty please.
and here’s your problem – small guilds are getting killed. A guild of 15 people won’t be able to get 300 000 influence needed, new people won’t join because we don’t have that 300 000 influence needed. Going the solo route – 12 months and 240 golds to get the earrings for all alts. 18 months if to get the amulets and the earrings. It’s insane. Which takes us to the only solution and that’s being a prick to big guilds – join lots of them, get your stuff, leave. Is that really how they want us to play this game?
And that’s exactly why we have multi-guilding.
Your guild is little and not willing to work for the needed influence? You either collaborate with other guilds or join other side-guilds to partecipate guild missions.
And being “a prick” why exactly?
The guilds I joined for missions are actually very happy I’m spending some time with them.
Joining a guild is not a contract for eternity, especially your side-guilds; most guilds actually accept greetily people that join them as a side-guild.
On pratical matters, they get influence and an helping hand for missions from you, and you get earrings.
You’re making a mess because you don’t want to do this and that.
Then don’t, and keep your exotic earrings or your 80 days or whatever.
GW2 even supports bullheaded people like that
though you’re penalized for not wanting to properly coordinate with guilds by needing more time for the items.
