Why is map closing a thing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If you join a map that is already scheduled to close, you won’t see the volunteering notification. In its last few minutes, you should however notice a periodic warning in chat. If that warning never appeared, there’s probably a bug, otherwise, stop taxiing into closing maps. The system doesn’t care if you flood into a map, as the main map has already been decided.

Download Gw2Setup.exe.

Rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe.

Move Gw2.exe to the same folder as Gw2-64.exe/Gw2.dat.

Right click Gw2.exe → Send to → Desktop (create shortcut).

Right click the shortcut to Gw2.exe → Properties. Under the Shortcut tab of the Properties window, append -32 to the target, like so: Target: “C:\Example\Gw2.exe” -32

It doesn’t matter which one you install, the data is the same. If you want to use the 32-bit client, simply run Gw2.exe -32. If you only have Gw2-64.exe, simply rename the 32-bit Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe, place it in the same folder, then run it with -32.

The time out is a technical limitation.

However, the annoyance it causes can be avoided by virtually managing the inventory. Instead of posting directly, transactions are queued on the client’s side.

Personally, I used to rewrite the trading post before v2 released, and this was one of its features, including the ability to sell items with a single click. It’s unfortunate that ArenaNet doesn’t actually support doing this or addons in general, since so many things could be fixed or improved.

The 64-bit client was forced on 64-bit systems just over a month ago. If you weren’t using the 64-bit client already, note that the forced switch could possibly have changed your hardware related settings, such as your graphics. If you’re on a laptop, you’ll also need to ensure that the 64-bit client is using your dedicated GPU. Simply renaming Gw2-64.exe to Gw2.exe can help, as the settings are based on the filename.

You may also want to clean install your graphics drivers.

If you want to go back to the 32-bit client, you can do so by using the -32 option with the 32-bit Gw2.exe. (Gw2.exe -32)

When you choose to remember your IP, you’re actually authorizing your IP range, which could potentially allow anyone in your area to gain access. The odds of this happening randomly however is pretty much none, unless you’re using a popular VPN.

If your account still has SMS enabled and you still receive the code, then there are a few possibilities. Either someone you know had access to your computer/phone or either device has been comprised, giving someone remote access. You will want to scan your computer for malicious software, disable all non-Microsoft startup programs and services and reset your network configuration. Even safer, reset/re-install Windows. To be complete, you will also want to reset your device, assuming text message SMS.

If your account no longer has SMS enabled, or you no longer receive the code, then your email is compromised. When your email is compromised, they can simply contact support to grant them access. You will want to ensure that no additional recovery options or forwarding has been set on your email, then change your password.

In either case, you will want to change your password.

If GW1 was actually unlinked, only support can do that, so your email is likely compromised. It’s also possible that they had enough information to prove ownership of the account, such as your serials and payment history, though you would have likely needed to have been inactive for a week at least.

Download Gw2Setup-64.exe, if you don’t already have that one, rename it to Gw2-64.exe, place it where you’d like to install the game, then run it. In both your cases (unable to verify and invalid signature), the download is getting corrupted.

If the problem persists, as a simple test, press WindowsKey+R and open msconfig. Under the boot tab, select safe boot and network under it, then ok and reboot. This will cause Windows to boot with all non-essential software disabled. Repeat the process, redownload Gw2Setup, rename it (delete the existing files) and try again. If this works, you have software interfering with GW2. Open msconfig and uncheck safe boot to return to normal.

In the future, if Windows complains about not being able to verify the executable, it’s because Gw2.exe/Gw2-64.exe doesn’t exist or is corrupted. This can happen when GW2 updates and fails to move itself, in which cases Gw2/-64.exe is temporarily named Gw2.tmp or something along the lines of Gw2.000. To fix this, you can either download Gw2Setup/-64.exe and rename it to Gw2/-64.exe or if Gw2.tmp is ~25 MB, rename it instead.

Has ANet Forgotten the Casual Gamers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

I just learned that I’m casual, and GW1 is the most epic funnest game I have ever played, (wiki is there for a reason) I love my build wars.

The problem with the term casual is that it has multiple meanings. The casual play style however, is to play with little effort, as in, difficulty setting → just the story. Picture SAB infantile mode for example. These players just want to have casual fun and will tend to jump into the game pressing buttons with little knowledge of what they’re doing. They’re not going to bother with putting in extra effort to learn and research the game, so most will never see those easy builds or even know about the wiki or other resources. What most will end up doing is using whatever skills they were given and a random set of henchmen, as most tend to play MMOs like single player games, which made the game very difficult, and when these players can’t progress, they’ll simply move on. There’s a reason why the average player “stands in fire” and most MMOs balance solo content around those players.

GW2 uses a network of servers around the world to host the assets/files that your launcher is downloading to update the game. By default, you download from the closest asset server to your location. If there’s a problem with your connection to that server, or if that server happens to have a problem, it will affect your ability to update the game. By using the -assetsrv option, you can manually select which server to use.

To use -assetsrv, you can either append it to the target of a shortcut, or enter it directly into the folder’s address bar. For example, if Gw2.exe is located in the folder C:\GW2\, you simply need to enter the following into the address bar, then press enter:

C:\GW2\Gw2.exe -assetsrv drwkwiejruot6.cloudfront.net

drwkwiejruot6.cloudfront.net can be replaced with the address of another server, for example, 52.84.22.247, 52.85.173.177 or 54.230.228.175

Using a VPN requires installing special software, so you should ignore this. The purpose of a VPN is to encrypt your connection and change the path you take over the internet. The encryption prevents your ISP from causing problems due to manipulation while the different route is the equivalent of selecting a different asset server.

If you are running Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe.

If the launcher is stuck initializing and has never gotten to the point where it begins downloading files (where you can see the login), you may have a software issue. As a simple test, press WindowsKey+R, open msconfig, select the boot tab, check safe boot and network under it, then OK and reboot. You’ll start in safe mode with all non-essential programs disabled, where you can then try the launcher. To undo this, open msconfig and uncheck safe boot.

To kill a process, alternatively, press WindowsKey+R (or open cmd.exe) and enter the following command, replacing Gw2.exe with the name of yours:

taskkill /F /IM Gw2.exe

Lastly, you can run a diagnostics by using the -diag option (Gw2.exe -diag). If none of the above helps, create a ticket and include the output from the diagnostics.

Crash During Install

none of these ideas work

You should have created your own thread with your own log, as the issue can vary greatly. In this case, the op likely has bad data, whether that be a corrupted dat file, a bad response from the asset server, a problem with the disk or memory, or the result of a bad overclock.

In your case, if you’re crashing periodically while downloading, that’s usually caused by a program interfering with GW2. Within the crash section of the log, look for a module line, which is the dll causing it, then go from there. If GW2 does not popup with the crash report however and instead becomes unresponsive, that can be caused by certain CPUs, in which case you need to set the processor affinity of Gw2.exe to a single CPU (with Gw2.exe open, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, find it under processes and right click).

Has ANet Forgotten the Casual Gamers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

If you mean easier content, ArenaNet has never actually catered to that crowd like most MMOs, where the solo experience is balanced for the lowest of players. The casual players, as in those who simply want to login and play without having to deal with scheduling/groups and in a more casual/relaxed play style, do however make up the vast majority of players in MMOs in general. It’s why most MMOs do it. ArenaNet however has always gone for the niche.

GW1 never supported the casual play style as the game was all about builds. Since casuals are more likely to use random builds, the content could become nearly impossible. With the right setup however, the game was trivial, but casual players generally don’t put in a lot of effort, follow guides, research or etc.

GW2 was originally balanced for action gamers. Like HoT, if you failed to dodge, you were going to die. In fear of scaring off players however, mobile combat was troublesome for WoW players for example, everything was heavily nerfed after the first beta. Their plan however was to increase the difficulty over time in an attempt to improve those players, and people have been complaining about those increases all along, from the karka to the mordrem. What GW2 was supposed to be however was casual friendly, in the sense that you could make meaningful progress in shorter amounts of time, meaning content should be balanced around taking no more than 30-60 minutes.

Season 3 will likely keep on track and have a similar difficulty to HoT. Whether they continue on this path will depend on how much ArenaNet cares about profits, as obviously they’re going to scare people off. ArenaNet however probably didn’t think it was difficult, as you’re clearly expected to zerg in active maps, and you can always group for the story.

If they do offer a roll back however, you’re going to lose everything after the date it was lost.

Despite their policy, the truth is, as long as you’re not using macros to automate gameplay for extended periods, with the exception of playing music, there’s no risk. Using a macro to spam clicks is technically against the rules for example, yet no one has ever been banned for doing it to open bags. Mastery point madness

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The problem with masteries is that ArenaNet presented them in place of leveling. People expect to be able to easily reach the level cap, as that’s the standard in nearly every game. If you ignore all that however and simply unlock what you actually need or the ones you actually want, it can be a very casual experience, as simple as naturally playing through the game. The only reason to unlock everything is for legendaries, but legendaries were meant to show dedication to the entire game.

For starters, they need to drop the mastery level as it’s as useless as achievement points and only encourages rushing it. The other problem is that you’re given no direction, which with a few mistakes, can permanently ruin your experience. One of the original reasons for the trait simplification for example, back when traits were 5 points each, was that some people were randomly spending points, rather than going for the actual traits. Likewise, some have done the same with masteries, only to find that it’s nearly impossible to get those last few points and what makes it worse, there’s no way to undo it.

They should have just increased the level cap. Much like masteries, you’d still be level 80, but within HoT, you could reach level 80 + HoT level 60 (say 15 per zone). Furthermore, enemies should have also had these levels so that it would actually feel like you’re progressing/leveling. Masteries on the other hand should have been treated like traits, where you could swap them in and out at will. They would still cost points, but rather than being used to permanently unlock them, they would be the cost to equip them. The only purpose of collecting more points would simply be to equip more masteries at a time. Even the simple change of allowing you to reset your points would make it a far more friendly experience.

Black screen possibly due to connectivity

in Account & Technical Support

Healix.5819

There is an issue where blocking certain packets will cause a black screen. This can either be a problem with the router, or the ISP. If possible, you can quickly test the router by trying a direct connection with the internet. If not, you’ll need to disable the router’s features, such as its firewall, in order to dumb it down to a basic hub to find out which one was the problem. GW2 also requires ports 80, 443, and 6112 both in and out to be open, which you may need to manually forward through your router.

F2P Experience: Complaint

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The city level requirement is to prevent bots from easily creating spam accounts. The restrictions are not an issue if you simply play the game, which was their problem. If they would have naturally played through the zone, exploring it as you would have your first time, they would have unlocked things as they needed them. The locks are also account based, so once they’ve done it, they’ll never have that problem again. If you wanted to show them around, you should have played normally, while also taking detours to the hidden areas.

They should get rid of that upgrade button however – having it on character select should be enough. As for the HoT reminder, just click it away.

Difficulty in the Heart of Magumma

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

In my honest opinion HoT is how the game should be at least after Lvl 60.

HoT is basically how the game was at level 1 back during the original beta, except enemies had more health and their special attacks would simply 1 shot you.

The problem with the core game is downscaling. When you’re downscaled, you deal more damage and take less. When you’re underleveled however, you deal less damage and take more. If you want the game to be more challenging, only play while underleveled. I for example always play at +5-10 levels while also undergeared, and much like HoT, you can be 1 shot by the stronger enemies. When it comes to normal play however, nothing’s stopping the player from only playing while downscaled or leveling solely through the easier zones, like 1-80 in Queensdale, thus the problem continues regardless of the difficulty. At 80, season 1 was the in-between difficulty, but that’s mostly gone now, and people have been complaining about the difficulty increase all along, from karka to aetherblade. In the end, if the game is too difficult, the more casual audience will simply move on at the first sign of frustration as they’re only playing for fun. ArenaNet has always been a niche however, so only time will tell if they end up nerfing everything like other MMOs or continuing on that path.

So I am wondering, what direct ROI do raids have

At the very least, raiding advertised and sold the game to that audience, as well as kept them active. I doubt these players spend extra money however as gold is trivial to obtain in GW2. In other MMOs however, I’ve seen hardcore raid guilds spend hundreds of dollars to be first. For example, if ascended was just released along with raids, they would have bought gold to immediately craft it all. Next expansion will reveal if raids were worth it, as either this will be the last, or just the beginning.

Personally, I was with a raiding guild from other MMOs back at launch and everyone simply rushed to the nonexistent endgame. Without the typical progression/raid grind, they basically didn’t know what to do, so they quit within the first month. A lot of them did come back for HoT, only because everything else was dead at the time, but in the end, cosmetic raiding was of no interest to them.

Is the game any challenging again?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The difficulty of HoT can vary greatly depending on how you play. If you play one of the easier professions, like necromancer or ranger, you’re going to find it fairly easy. If you play something like a zerker dagger elementalist or thief however, you’re going to find HoT rather deadly. HoT features a lot of anti-melee enemies, and with only ~11k health, you can easily be killed within seconds by a lot of things. Most enemies are basically zerkers; dealing much higher damage at the cost of health. A lot of enemies for example deal 2-4k damage every second or two, while some deal 10k+ with slower attacks, but they only have maybe 10-50k health. Most of the challenge can however be skipped as you’re not actually required to face any of it and the stronger enemies are already nerfed during the story, plus you have an NPC team to help you.

If you want it to be however, HoT can still be a 1 button spammer if you only zerg around and group for solo content like a lot of people. At the very least however, HoT was definitely not balanced for the casual majority like almost every other MMO is. HoT’s map design is also fairly complex, so if you don’t like legitimately exploring, you’ll likely find navigating HoT very annoying.

GW2 has a 30-day refund policy if you buy it from their own store, and HoT comes with a level 80 booster, so you could just try it for yourself. Make a new account though.

Yeah. Welcome to HoT. A whole expansion that is targeted solely at the higher skilled players. And Anet wonder why it is not as successful as they hoped….

ArenaNet has always targeted the above average. GW1 could be nearly impossible for example if you just slapped together random builds and henchmen. GW2’s original beta was more like HoT when it came to enemies, except they didn’t have lower health, they just dealt far more damage and any special attack would likely kill you. It was common to see the stand-still players die to little things, like a level 2 Moa. That was all nerfed however to appeal to those not accustomed to mobile combat/action games, and then nerfed again for the NPE. HoT will likely end up seeing a lot more nerfs at some point, assuming they care more about selling it.

Yeah….No, the only real content that is targeted at higher skilled players are raids, which does not account for the whole expansion in itself. And we are not forced into it

HoT was definitely balanced more towards the gamers, which are the higher skilled players in comparison. The average MMO player is not a gamer, but rather someone who plays very casually (as in little effort) and mostly for fun. It’s why almost all MMOs are like Queensdale level of difficulty when it comes to solo content, and even if it’s too difficult, there’s always vertical progression to further trivialize it.

“When is night?” – casual player in VB. If they continue to make content like that where it’s synced to the time of day, they should have an in-game clock. For now however, this could be done quite easily through an overlay.

Mastery points and story achievements

S1 was before mastery points. For S2 and HoT, the story and its achievements are solo content, except for HoT’s Migraine achievement.

You can max out without the story achievements, but you’ll likely have a much easier time doing the story achievements as the alternatives can be very time consuming. See the wiki for a list.

Email Authentication Game Security Suggestion

For email authentication to fail, your email has to be compromised and if your email is compromised, nothing else matters because they can contact support to unlock your account. If you’re getting random verification emails, note that your login info is compromised, but they’re stopped there if they can’t access your email.

ArenaNet doesn’t need to add anything else and email authentication is actually the superior option. In the past, the average user may have unknowingly accepted an authentication request due to ArenaNet making it a link in the email, but now it’s a code you have to enter into the launcher. What you should be looking at is securing your email. Any decent email provider is going to offer a lot of options, including both SMS and an authenticator, as well as double verifications for unknown devices instead of just the basic IP verification – if you allow GW2 to remember a VPN, everyone on it can bypass your security.

Best unlock order for masteries ?

Which would suggest spending a lot of time in the HoT zones.

You should be able to obtain most masteries on your journey through HoT, assuming you actually try to explore the maps, participate in the events and try everything else there is to offer, like adventures. The later masteries are mostly useless, so you can simply skip then to make it a very casual experience, but if you want everything however, then not only are you going to have to put in the time, you’re going to have to put in the effort to complete achievements.

If you want to spend minimal time in HoT, adventures are the fastest source of experience. Pick the ones you can manage gold on and do them daily. They take roughly 2 minutes each and are worth 100k experience. To make it even faster, park alts and use the % exp boosters.

Anyway to force 32-bit client installation?

The data files for both clients are the same, so it doesn’t matter which one you install. If you have Gw2-64.exe and not Gw2.exe, simply download the 32-bit Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe, put it with Gw2-64.exe, then use Gw2.exe -32
