But aren’t people exploiting to sell it?

Basically. People aren’t supposed to be able to join in-progress instances, but it’ll let you join for a second, so you simply do that at the end to enjoy your free event rewards. The problem was putting the token as event rewards instead of having them in the daily chest.

It’s funny to see them allow the use of an exploit and allow the use of pet botting in the same day.

Ascended Grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

Fractals were originally intended to be an endless grind for those seeking that kind of endgame. The amount of agony resistance required to nullify the mechanic scales with the level. If you don’t care about higher level fractals, 0 is enough. If you want to reach the end, you’re going to want 150 max. See the wiki for a scale.

There are no current plans to nerf ascended acquisition. Ascended gear will become easier to acquire over time however (like with expansions) simply due to ascended becoming more common of a reward. As ascended becomes more common however, something else will simply take its place. The original plan for example was to offer progression through infusions, which you can see where they started, but didn’t continue.

Higher level fractals are the only content where ascended is legitimately required simple due to agony. Raids were supposed to be balanced for ascended, but people do them with less than the maximum amount of players.

Is Living World synonymous with Living Story?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Back when they first started, back when seasons didn’t exist, the living world concept was called the living story. ArenaNet themselves weren’t decided on the name however as they used both names. Eventually ArenaNet labeled it as the living world as they wanted to clarify that it meant the entire world, whereas the living story could be confused with the personal story. If you use the living story now, you’re referring to the living world seasons, whereas the living world is basically anything.

An improvement to the "invisible" mode

Healix.5819

Still has not been fixed. Such a huge flaw…

Depends on which issue you’re referring to. There have been improvements. Invisible people show up as offline rather than unknown, unless you’re mutual friends. Only mutual friends see the extended information on hover now, whereas everyone else just sees online/offline. The last online in the guild roster is no longer updated if you stay invisible. You still can’t see guild chat, and people have never been able to whisper you while invisible, though you could whisper them. If you didn’t logoff while invisible, people will see you login under game messages/contacts chat once you reach character select, at which point you can go invisible and they’ll see you logoff. Logging off invisible prevents that. People can invite you to a group while invisible, but the trick is, you have to do nothing. The game allows you to invite people who are offline.

SAB Tribulation Mode Complaint (?)

Actually I finished it in normal mode without a torch, but that path isn’t accessible in tribulation mode as far as I know. So I never even stumbled upon that waterfall until now.

They added portals to W2 that lets you skip nearly half of the zones. The torch isn’t required for normal mode 2.0, but only because of those skips. Also, tribulation mode is meant to be unfair.

What annoys me, and what I haven’t seen anyone on the forum talking about yet, is that they have officially decided that they will NEVER release new content (i.e., the originally intended worlds 3 and 4) for SAB:

He’s not actually saying never, only that they can’t sacrifice the main game for it. The problem is, he’s a designer, so if he’s making SAB, he’s not working on new maps. Back then, there weren’t a lot of new areas planned, so he was likely free to experiment, which is how it started. As long as GW2 is moving forward however, that does basically mean that SAB won’t be seeing any future updates. The exception however is if SAB ends up being popular enough justify it.

Ask support (https://help.guildwars2.com/anonymous_requests/new).

70 is a probably a bug due to how HoT was handled. It seems the cap was raised several times from 64 up to 69 during HoT’s beta. I’m guessing that in order to reach 70, you had to max out your slots first, then pre-purchase. If this is the case, it won’t be fixed until they raise the cap again.

ANet will use SAB as distraction from the legendary weapon fiasco.

To be fair, new SAB stuff was datamined a long time ago, so if anything, they announced legendaries were being cut because SAB was already coming. A distraction is however needed not because of legendaries, but because nothing has been happening.

To confirm, you tried forcing the nvidia GPU (as in opening the control software and switching it from automatic detection and/or by adding a profile for Gw2.exe to specify its settings – you may also need to setup CoherentUI_Host.exe)? Alternatively, if supported, you can try booting into the bios to disable the integrated GPU.

There was a problem in past, which probably doesn’t apply anymore, where the launcher wouldn’t render depending on the monitor’s color settings. You can try changing it either under windows or nvidia.

Have you tried compatibility mode, trying Windows 7 and 8?

You can use the Gw2.exe -diag option to run through a diagnostic.

As a workaround, you can try bypassing the launcher using the options:
-nopatchui -email you@example.com -password example

Have you tried running a clean copy of Gw2.exe? Make a new folder on your desktop, download Gw2Setup.exe into that folder, rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and run it.

If you restored your Windows user account, try creating a new clean one to run Gw2.exe.

If you ran through Windows update after re-installing Windows, it’s possible that one of the updates is causing the problem.

Hero points are exclusively for skill/trait unlocks. Originally, the plan was that you would use up most of the hero points available in the world by unlocking all of your skills. ArenaNet caved however by giving you 100% of the points you needed just by leveling up, then halved the amount required for the elite specializations. There was talk of the possibility of an excess hero point vendor, but keep in mind that hero points are limited resource, so that would have only caused problems. For now, excess hero points are simply a bonus, allowing you to unlock future elite specializations faster.

They need to make the journeys primarily generic to reduce costs. Most of the collections should be account bound items, items which you have to acquire yourself and have a minimal economic impact. For items that are tradeable, they should be dynamic. Instead of for example requiring 100 tradeable whatevers, you should have to find a travelling merchant which trades whatever item for the legendary component. The catch is that the item the merchant wants is a variable that ArenaNet can change to manipulate the markets if needed.

If legendaries are going to be a minority content, they shouldn’t be making unique journeys for each one. Simplify the development costs however and it shouldn’t be a problem.

Some components however should be easy to vary, like having a task to locate certain NPCs or whatever. Worst case, everything can be generalized, including the basic design for the legendaries themselves. A jungle/Mordremoth themed legendary weapon set for example. With only needing 1 primary journey, the task of adding additional legendaries should be simple.

Cutting the legendary journey would only make things worse. The mystic forge alternative, the legendary journey was after all one of the launch features, unlike the weapons themselves.

W2 was full of complaints from the more casual players. It took too much time, was too difficult and they pointed at the infinite coin for the reason why. Josh Foreman was actively on the forums during the time and tried to explain things, but was ultimately suspended for telling them like it is. Although there were other distractions at the time, the increased difficulty definitely turned people away, just like HoT.

They have to give you that answer because they don’t want to take responsibility for you downloading a virus or breaking your account, etc.

There is no way to run multiple clients without the use of some sort of tool. You can either virtualize Gw2.exe or simply kill GW2’s mutex handle, which is what prevents multiple instances from being opened. With the handle killed, you can simply use Gw2.exe -sharearchive to start multiple clients. If you don’t want to use an automated tool to do it for you, download Process Explorer from Microsoft to find the mutex (AN-Mutex-Window-Guild Wars 2) and kill it.

There have been problems in the past with laptops having a dedicated and integrated GPU. If this is the case, ensure that GW2 is using the dedicated GPU.

If you haven’t done so already, delete your local settings by deleting the folder
%appdata%/Guild Wars 2/ and if it exists, Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat. You can also try to force windowed mode with the option: Gw2.exe -windowed

If Windows updated your graphics drviers when this happened, uninstall the drivers first, then clean install an older version.

Since Gw2.exe can only be opened once, ensure that any existing Gw2.exe processes are killed first.

GW2 needs Colin back ASAP

Mo could have simply kept quiet. He didn’t need to inform players that legendaries were put on hold. They were never promised to be released anytime soon, only that they would eventually release 16 of them. It doesn’t matter that Colin left, the same thing would have likely happened, except they probably would have kept quiet.

The problem is, with no new content for the majority of players, the numbers are likely sliding hard and HoT’s numbers were likely not good to begin with due to the nature of HoT. What could those 6 devs possibly do? Live events in the past were created by smaller teams. SAB for example was primarily done by Josh Foreman. Assuming those 6 are actually capable of that kind of work, they should either be able to fix up one of the older events or make something more basic within a month. With season 3 being 5+ months away, they need anything to pass the time. They could even start with a basic season 1 style build up for season 3, with I’m guessing Chak starting to invade, or leaking out of the jungle to wreak low levels. Bring back the season 1 style as intermissions imo.

TBH, GW2 today is mostly unrecognizable from GW2 at launch.

In terms of difficulty, GW2’s original launch was nearly unrecognizable from GW2’s original beta. The game was originally balanced for action gamers. When you were expected to dodge, you either did, or you were downed. I remember people at level 2 for example trying to tank Moa’s in Queensdale, only to die to their rapid peck. HoT in comparison is basically back to the way things were.

Yeah, they told us initially that there would be masteries that would make it easier to kill Mordrem, but apparently, that got scrapped, too…

It was basically the same thing as treasure mushrooms or the axemaster in VB. The lack of those masteries actually made the content easier. Husks for example were invulnerable until you either broke them or had the mastery to ignore their defense.

It can actually stay as is until they straight up confirm that legendaries are cancelled forever. As is, they could take a year off and that statement will still be true. Besides, if they did remove it, people would just whine even harder.

Mo should have never bothered to say anything and instead simply pushed back this next set for several more months to buy time. Nothing’s stopping them from copy/pasting either.

I mean it was a big factor in my purchase

You realize that it doesn’t actually give a time limit right? Those 16 legendaries could have been strung out over the next several years.

The other solution is to modify the registry, but I think you have to do it constantly. It was posted about here a little while ago.

SAB:

An awesome and utterly amazing project that was completely destroyed by sommething so simple and silly: the infinite continue coin.

SAB originally began as a small experiment. It was different, so they released it under the disguise of a joke on April 1st. They saw an unexpected popularity in SAB which is why W2 was released within months of W1. W2 however was longer and more difficult which caused complaints. Josh was also suspended from the forums during this time for telling the players like it is. Unlike W1, W2 saw low participation, so the desire to create a W3 was dropped. A behind the scenes on SAB’s development could be read on his personal blog. Back then it was said that Mo loves numbers, so it’s safe to assume that anything that is doing poorly is going to either be dropped or have little resources, such as dungeons and now legendaries. Remember season 1 when they tried different types of content, like how they used to add dungeons? Those were surveys.

Personally, I ran through this fight maybe 5 times in the last week without any problems and I’ve never had a problem with just running in to the updrafts, being flung into the air and holding space (~150ms ping for comparison). Keep in mind that if an updraft spawns on top of you, I’m guessing it’ll not work, so you’ll want to run to a different one. I’m not sure if it’s still a problem, but if you die to Mordremoth, you need to intentionally die again on the second attempt, otherwise the encounter will be start in the next stage where the area is smaller.

DPS meter in game would be a "God Send"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

A DPS meter probably wouldn’t measure how well someone handles a break bar…

The thing about DPS meters is, they can be far more than just DPS meters. They’re combat log analysis tools. GW2’s combat log is far too basic, but in other games, the tool would show things like who used what CC on that break bar, who cleansed what, who dodged, who stood in fire, etc.

I doubt GW2 will ever see a group DPS meter, since that would probably mean a lot of work on the backend, but the ability to create a personal one is already on the table.

Just pitching in to say that with my 10 years of mmo experience in WoW, both damage meters and “item score” contributed nothing positive to that game.

Gear score was simply used to speed up the process. Originally, the main group would inspect every person in the raid to check their gear.

DPS meters have many positives. Before them, anyone suspected of sucking, any classes that weren’t a part of the meta were simply kicked or rejected. The DPS meter could show that your unique build was good or that you in lesser gear was parsing higher than that min/maxed raider who lacked skill and complained about everyone else.

Personally, I’d probably pre-purchase just to get in to beta. There’s no other chance to see the game as it was meant to be, before they caved. The original GW2 beta for example was like Dark Souls-lite where all special attacks were either dodge or die moments. Ignoring that however, it’d entirely depend on what was advertised. After HoT, and further revealed by the decision to cut legendaries, I’m guessing that ArenaNet will get back on track, back to their original goal of a living world. Focusing their advertising on the WoW audience was a bad move imo, which was only worsened by what happened next. After all, if I wanted to raid, I certainly wouldn’t be playing GW2.

In the meantime, there are simply no other MMOs like GW2, so as long as they stick true to their original design, I’ll blindly pre-purchase. Waiting on a designed-for-VR Skyrim-like game though.

Are 70 people working on a new expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Without knowing what their jobs are, it’s pointless to complain about it. A programmer isn’t an artist, nor a writer for example. Those 70 devs could be mainly writers, storyboarders, concept artists, designers, etc. Someone designing new maps isn’t going to be working on legendaries.

But if they really wanted to, surely they could just throw in whatever as the legendary “quest” and be done with it. Coming up with a design that looks and feels legendary should be the hard part. They’re just putting in too much effort when they could simply copy the axe for example, and make it a sword, though I guess there’s the whole economic impact they have to take into account.
