World Boss and the empty map

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

This will always be an issue. Any changes to megaservers will have no affect. There will always be potential for just a little more people than what will fit into a map, creating a dead instance. They would have to either make the event scale all the way down for solo play, or attempt to dynamically control the population. For example, instead of opening a new map once it’s full, fill the map to 150%, then forcibly split it into two identical copies. Additionally, events simply shouldn’t be balanced to require more than 10-20 people.

Remove the DS timer(feedback)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

They should split the design of open world maps and metas. DS was almost done that way, being a meta map, they just need to take it a little further. The basic DS should be a regular open world explorable map, while a new map, which is restricted much a like personal story instance, is offered solely for the meta event. While the meta is active or about to start, anyone in the regular map should be given an option to join the battle against mordremoth. This design will split the players between those who actually want to participate in the meta and everyone else. With HoT’s meta design of wanting 20+ people minimum, though players expect at least 50+, this really needs to happen in order to make it easier to participate.

whatever happened to the concept of SCALING Anet?

They do scale. Despite people expecting that zergs are required, you really only need 3-5 people per objective. The problem ArenaNet created by splitting up the zerg is that instead of needing 1 group, you need 4. Original world bosses for example were designed for 10 people, but possible with as few as 3. Now, world bosses are designed for 20+. Furthermore, with the increase in difficulty, many can’t handle the content, so not many people can handle doing it with only 3, and since scaling isn’t 1:1, it only gets easier with more people, further misleading them.

The other problem, which you may considering to be a scaling issue, is that everything was designed to be group content when it simply shouldn’t have been. HoT will no doubt get nerfed eventually, and I expect to see all chains made into regular events, just like the rest of the game.

Shatterer Problem

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

I sounds to me as if this isn’t specifically a Shatterer program, but one related to launchers.

It’s not specific to launchers either, it’s a problem with player-placed interactable objects, including dead players. In the Salvage Pit adventure for example, dead people can make it impossible to do the adventure’s objectives.

The workaround in most cases is manually targeting the object, which gives it priority. As a possible fix, give an option to make player-placed objects only interactable if they’re first targeted, including dead players if you’re in combat or in an adventure.

Crashing at final battle getting worse

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Healix.5819

If you’re crashing, you should post a crash log in tech support. You can further try to prevent crashing by restarting the client after entering the zone, at every start, and playing on lowest settings. You could also have some minor corruption, which upon loading a certain asset, will immediately crash. Use -repair for that.

If however you’re complaining about being disconnected/kicked, there’s not much you can do. The zone itself used to have problems, causing the instance to crash and kicking everyone in it. If it’s just you however, then it’s a connection problem.

Apparently “normal” players do not play raids guys!

What is normal? If you define normal by the majority of players, that’s correct. In general, most people tend to play MMOs solo. If you look at the way MMO communities act, raiding is generally in an exclusive spot. Guilds advertise themselves as raiding guilds and the players are known as raiders.

afk#1 spam

HoT didn’t change that. As long as it’s group content, you can spam your buttons without care. The same is true for all games, as long as the content isn’t balanced for the elite; the top 0.1%. There’s always room for a carry.

It’s fairly simple, but the problem is, there’s other things to do which have a higher priority and they might not actually want to officially support it, since it’ll certainly change things. The combat log is also pretty terrible and needs an overhaul itself, which may be a factor.

Sounds like you’re running Gw2Setup.exe instead of Gw2.exe. Running Gw2Setup.exe is going to begin installing to your %temp% folder.

Locate the largest Gw2.dat, either from wherever you tried to install the game previously or your %temp% folder, and move it to a new location of your choosing, such as
C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\. Move Gw2.exe to the same folder. If you don’t have a Gw2.exe, rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe. Delete all existing GW2 shortcuts and create new ones using Gw2.exe from the above folder.

So far, I can’t even login to the game from my computer to start the download. Just infinite login circle.

You’re running Gw2Setup.exe? You’re encountering a bug where it displays a stripped down version of the launcher instead of the installation prompt. You can’t actually login when it’s like that because it’s not functional. In this case, simply rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and place it wherever you want to install it, such as
C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe

You also don’t need to login to install or download the game. If you’re running Gw2Setup.exe and it’s downloading without ever prompting you where to install it, it has automatically defaulted to your %temp% folder, in which case you need to move it (Gw2.exe and Gw2.dat from %temp%).

-

If however you were not running Gw2Setup.exe,

Open notepad as an administrator and open the file
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Ensure that there are no entries involving GW2. If so, remove them, save it and reboot.

Under the Control Panel, open your network adapters and disable all but the primary one used to connect to the internet.

Try launching Gw2.exe directly without a shortcut. If the problem persists, use the -diag option (Gw2.exe -diag) and attach the result.

Would downloading the game onto a memory stick even work since I couldn’t share through the VPN, and since the location is different as well?

The game doesn’t need to be installed in the traditional sense. You simply need to combine Gw2.exe with Gw2.dat and you can place it wherever you want. If your memory stick isn’t big enough, simply use a compression program, such as 7zip, to split Gw2.dat into multiple parts.

You say VPN, but if your laptop is on the same local network as your computer, you simply need to use Windows file sharing and share your GW2 folder with public permissions or a password enabled account.

There is only 1 client. It doesn’t matter if you own HoT or not, you’ll download the same data.

How doesn’t it fully download? Gw2Setup.exe? The launcher gets stuck at 99%?

First, run through Windows update and fully update your system, including driver updates which may be listed as optional.

If you do not have GW2 installed, start by downloading Gw2Setup.exe. Create a GW2 folder on your desktop, rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and put it in that folder, which you can move wherever you want later. Right click Gw2.exe and run it as an administrator.

Assuming the launcher gets stuck downloading at 0 KB/s,

Right click Gw2.exe and create a shortcut. Right click the shortcut and select properties. Select the target field and edit it like so, substituting your own path:

Target: "C:\Example\Gw2.exe" -image -assetsrv drwkwiejruot6.cloudfront.net

Right click the shortcut and run it as an administrator.

If that wasn’t the problem, press WindowsKey+R to bring up the run dialog, then open msconfig. Under the boot tab check safe boot and select networking under it. Click OK and reboot, which will boot into safe mode with most software disabled, in case something was interfering. Now try running the launcher. Return to msconfig and uncheck safe boot to continue.

even WoW dont make people do that to upgrade from one expac to another, they only charge existing client base for new addon.

Yes they do. If you want to upgrade an older account, you have to buy the base game/expansions again. They offer the current expansion, the last expansion and the rest of them bundled together. All games with expansions eventually bundle them. GW2 simply did it faster.

The core game is $0 and they do offer an upgrade option, which can be found within the game.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the bunny ears is one of those items the devs want to remain exclusive, as in, only the players who got them when they were available are the only players that will ever have them.

ArenaNet likely doesn’t want to create a certain kind of environment, which is likely also why the uniform and swimsuits were never released. The dev that created the uniform knew what they doing considering its timing.

Some people have found that GW2 randomly going black was caused by their router/network blocking a port or possibly modifying a certain packet. You can try using the “-clientport 443” (or 80) command to see if running GW2 on port 443 changes anything. If that doesn’t help, if possible, try bypassing the router just to confirm if it’s actually a problem. If it is, try opening port 80, 443 and 6112, then disabling port scan and DoS protection, then the router’s firewall. What works varies by the router.

Healix.5819

The progress on the launcher is based on the files remaining to download, rather than what you’ve downloaded compared to the total. Because of this, your progress will always start at 0%. Thinking it’s starting over is a common mistake. For comparison, a fresh install is around 300k files.

If you’re sure it’s installing all over again however, ensure that you’re running Gw2.exe rather than Gw2Setup.exe. Also ensure that Gw2.exe was installed to the location of your choosing. If you ran Gw2Setup.exe and were never asked where to install it, it would have selected your %temp% folder by default, which is not a safe spot. You can search that folder for Gw2.dat to try to recover it, but it would have been overwritten when you ran Gw2Setup.exe again. Instead of running Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe and place it wherever you’d like, such as C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe.

Hero Points for Elites, bad idea...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The completion of hero challenges has always been a requirement prior to HoT, assuming you wanted to unlock your skills as you leveled. It wasn’t until they made the mistake of making tomes and scrolls too easy to acquire that you could suddenly skip through the leveling process. HoT is simply a return to the way it was originally, with the only difference being you don’t get a portion of your skills unlocked through leveling alone and you no longer get an extra point for leveling at 80.

There are 40 challenges in HoT and you only need 20. The only mistake was making them both timed and group challenges. They will get nerfed eventually however.

Dragonstand needs a different model

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Meta events should ask if you want to join. Dragon’s Stand should be a normal map and while the event is active, or it’s going to start soon, a message should popup asking if you’d like to join the battle. It’d be like volunteering, but in reverse. These maps should fill to 100%, rather than the 80% or so they’re currently locked at due to the reservations for party joiners.

The simple problem with meta events however is the mindset of the players. People see a lack of commanders or a lack of people and immediately assume it will fail, when in actuality, you only need about 5 people per section. It does require a bit of effort however since you can’t hide behind the safety net of the zerg, which I’m guessing a lot of people fear, but it can also be a lot easier in comparison to a zerg full of bad players. If the UI showed how many the event was scaled for and how many people were in the surrounding area, things would probably go a lot differently. People would probably be more likely to participate if they knew that a “group” event meant 3+ people and that there were already people out there, just without a commander. Basically, events themselves should act as the commander tag.

Off-hand auto attack chain?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Skills are ordered by cooldown with the first 3 representing the main-hand and the last 2 representing the off-hand. Under the current design, an off hand auto attack simply doesn’t fit. They would have to do it similar to the thief where the choice of off-hand changes a main-hand skill. Even then, it’d really only make sense for dual-wielded weapons, where the auto attack would change to reflect striking with both weapons.

If they simply had a no-cooldown off-hand skill, keep in mind that the skill or possibly the entire build would be weakened because of that.

It would create some interesting situations where you could choose how you want to attack and you could alternate between the two auto attacks depending what you want to do. You could have a defensive auto attack chain on one weapon and offensive chain on another, or main-hand could be a melee weapon and off-had ranged one.

That’s what weapon swapping is for.

Redo all mastery stuff

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The double gated system is to compensate for the lack of a standard leveling experience. Since you can effectively level anywhere, they need some way to ensure that you’re actually playing through the content. Mastery points are for just that, while the experience is to simply make it take longer while additionally giving you that leveling feeling.

The trick about masteries is that the bulk of them are simply not required, which is why they can be harder to obtain. The ones that are absolutely required however are all on the top half, except gliding, but its entire line is a fairly obvious choice. If ArenaNet simply hid those later, more useless masteries, it would be a much more casual experience simply because you wouldn’t be aware of them.

Masteries will get somewhat easier to acquire over time however as they’ll likely add new sources. Season 3 for example will likely add more HoT mastery points through the story as well as any new map additions. New masteries are also a possibility to account for the additional points, however I doubt they’ll add entire new lines unless they’re planning on further gating the content.

Suggestion- add HoT dailies

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Considering the selection already changes as you level, if they were going to add HoT dailies, they’d probably take over the current ones. For example, where a core account might see a daily do complete 4 events in Queensdale, a HoT account may see Verdant Brink instead.

They could give HoT its own section, but what happens next expansion and after that? It’d get pretty bloated over time, in which case they’d likely only offer the current expansion while the previous ones become the core, like above.

Mastery Experience

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

HoT is suppose to be total grind.

People also used to complain about leveling in the core game being a grind. Some even expected to run straight through the personal story. Completing hearts in other starter zones was a common recommendation to play catch-up, but if you explored the maps however, leveling was never a problem. Likewise, if you explore HoT and complete all there is to offer, as in also doing all the events and adventures you come across, you shouldn’t have a problem with experience. Try to rush through it however and you’ll be forced to grind, but this time, you won’t have extra hearts. You do have daily adventures however, which are worth roughly 2.2 million xp per hour of gameplay, assuming you’re efficient. That is also the problem however. Adventures are a major source, the best source of experience, so for those that can’t handle them, they’re basically missing out on a free mastery line’s worth.

Personally, by the time I got around to the areas blocked by masteries in AB, I already had them all. I however legitimately explored the maps, probably spending at least a day’s worth of play time in VB alone and since I started each day by doing a few adventures, experience was never a problem.

For a game that "isn't grindy"...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Fractals, along with ascended gear, were specifically implemented for those seeking that endgame grind.

Legendaries were intended for “dedicated” players and they even clarified back at launch that they were meant to be a long term goal. Any casual player can easily craft one over the course of a year by simply playing the game for maybe an hour a day without specifically trying for one – from personal experience (original series).

Isn’t this against everything A-Net said this game would be?

They only said that grinding wouldn’t be a requirement. Cosmetics aren’t required and ascended is only required in later fractals and probably later raiding, but raiding is also targeting that specific type of player. Ascended armor really isn’t even required if you can handle it.

Healix.5819

Also, you need about 10-20 people in order to kill it.

How convenient that there were, at most, only three people there.

Most events in the game scale down for 3 people minimum. It can be done and it can be a lot faster when compared to the average zerg, but everyone participating will have to know what they’re doing and put in the effort, whereas in the zerg, only a fraction does. It’s far easier to break bars for example with a few people that want to, than a lot of people that don’t care, which is why breaking pre-nerf Shatterer was impossible and why events don’t scale 1:1.

Personally, I’ve only done the axemaster with as little as maybe 5. I’ve done the frogs with 3 and have solo’d the egg wyvern. As for the other two, I’ve never seen them with less than 10. It’s unfortunate that you’re not actually rewarded for putting in the effort compared to mindlessly zerging, which funnily gives you more rewards due to increased spawns.

Remove DR in HoT content completely

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

DR is a safety net. It’ll never be completely removed. If the average player was affected, they certainly would change when it’s triggered. Most people however are simply going to play through the events and complete the meta without ever seeing DR, then move on to something else.

Also keep in mind that DR is character specific and remembered, so if you login to farm a specific zone, then logout, the DR you previously had, you’ll still have.

It’s absolutely absurd to be playing in the new areas in the intended way and getting punished for doing so.

If you move around the entire maps and fully participate without tagging passing events, you really shouldn’t hit DR. You basically have to limit yourself to completing 1 event every 5 or so minutes. Complete them too fast and you’ll trigger DR, which will enter you into a cooldown period, whereas if you slowed down, you would have completed far more, potentially never triggering DR.

Just the other day for example I did VB day/night back to back 3 times without seeing DR. The 10+ minute breaks after completing all the events however likely prevented it. I started at a different chain each day and a different outpost each night, also doing the nearby escorts or champs.

HoT features complex maps because unlike other MMOs, you’re meant to legitimately explore your way through them. GW2’s true endgame has always been the journey through it, which a lot of traditional MMO players simply don’t understand (rush to the endgame grind).

HoT is more difficult because unlike other MMOs which balance open world/solo content for the worst of the player base, GW2 was never intended to be easy. In GW2’s original beta, special attacks were dodge or die moments and damage in general was much higher. For a taste, you basically have to play naked while in +5 level areas starting from level 10. It was all nerfed however because putting up a wall right at the gate would have been bad business. Instead, ArenaNet attempted to train those players by increasing the difficulty over time with every major content update and if you look back, people have been complaining the entire time (karka, drake puddles, aetherblade banner of death, etc). HoT is basically back up to normal. It will likely get nerfed eventually however because it’s bad for business. They could for example make it feel like you’re actually leveling by actually making your mastery level matter, limited of course.

another problem is that DE’s are so repetitive that it pretty much makes WoW generic quests seem fun to do in comparison, not a good sign.

Events are actually meant to be the alternative to generic quests while the personal/living story is meant to be the “epic”/story quests. Hearts are the result of traditional MMO players not knowing what to do without quests pointing the way, which is why they don’t exists in later maps.

If they were going to offer a jump start, chances are they would sell it at luxury price. WoW for example offers a level capped boost for $60. GW2 could easily do the same, offering a level 80 character with full exotics, 20 slot bags, waypoints and maybe hero challenges.

If they were simply going to boost your character, the casual expectations would be even more severe. They should have never casually given out tomes and scrolls in the first place. See the people with X characters complaining about having to actually play the game for hero points, which is what you had to do back before scrolls existed, or alternatively, grind level 80.

The map you joined was probably newly created. You can get into situations where you’re stuck in dead maps where new players rarely join because as people leave the previously full maps, new joiners are sent there instead of yours. Since the previous maps never actually empty out, you’re never given the opportunity to volunteer. You could try logging out, waiting ~10 seconds and logging back in to see if you can get into a different one, or taxi.

Alternatively, if you want experience, do daily adventures. They can be a major source of experience if you can manage gold. If you’re efficient, they’re the best source of experience for the time it takes.

imo, big events should be something you queue in to rather than occurring on the maps themselves and limited to the event’s area, similar to story instances. Dragon’s Stand was almost made that way, but they need to go a little further. When these events are about to happen, a warning should pop up asking if you want to participate (ie, Mordremoth is about to attack… Join the battle?). That way, everyone is on the same page and everyone that joins was active at that moment.

Some are unlocked as you progress an event chain, acting like a checkpoint. The idea behind Orr for example is that you’re pushing the army through, setting up new camps and waypoints along the way. Mellaggan’s is the same, unlocking once the team arrives.

Permanently dismiss SMS reminder

Instead of SMS, use an authenticator. It’s faster than having to go through the trouble of reading an email for the default email authentication. I for example simply press a macro key, which pastes the authenticator’s code.

It actually is possible to disable the reminder, but only if you happen to have an old Local.dat file from before SMS was implemented and it has to be kept read-only. Alternatively, you can use the -email, -password and -nopatchui options to bypass the launcher entirely.

Some of us who are security savvy would rather not have bank level security for an online game.

The problem is, most people aren’t and hacked accounts are damaging to the game which is going to cost ArenaNet. The reminder is meant to be an annoyance because they’re a potential vulnerability.

Apparently Anet takes your account security more serious than you do.

Email authentication can actually be far more secure, but in the end, they’re all vulnerable. Anyone that fell for the in-game mails for example would have likely given away their SMS/authenticator/email code if prompted, allowing the attacker to remember their own IP.

If you no longer have the secret key, you will need to contact support to get the authenticator removed. In the future, save the secret key in a secure location, which ArenaNet will only show you during the initial setup and is used to create your unique authenticator.

Why can't we trade players face-to-face?

Curtis Johnson

Hey guys,

The no face-to-face trade is a real decision and it’s primarily a question of trust (as many of you have noted). But it’s also a decision to protect players from scamming and protect the economy from black-markets. Let’s run through some quick examples.

1) Give something to my friend. – As several of you noted, target your friend, right click the item and select ‘mail-to…’. Done, this works in contact list, guild list, or in world anywhere without having to ‘meet’ them or ‘catch’ them.

2) Get a fair price for an item (anti-scam). – Because ALL trading goes through the trading post we can guarantee that highest bidder meets lowest seller and we can give every player the benefit of current market information.

3) Barter item-for-item. This is the grey area and also the most risky kind of trade because even with UI many items look alike in icon and many social engineering scams take place in this kind of system. It’s a risky trade environment which is why when you support it you have to have these multi-stage UI’s where everyone double-checks everything, and then eventually get’s lazy and stops double-checking and gets scammed anyways.

In the end we decided with super easy access to mail for trusted trades and trading post for untrusted trades that such a system wasn’t worth the risk, complication, and fragmenting the player market off of the trading post..

In testing we’ve found that mail is easier 90% of the time we’d want trade and the other 10% trading post is far safer and avoids drama and thing like random trade windows being thrown at you and lots of other unsavory hawking in game.

Hope that all makes sense.

Has email authentication changed?

Yes, email authentication sends a code now, which the launcher will ask you for. As for initialed, they’re referring to the location as being like a signature.
