PvP Player Needs to Level Masteries

in Players Helping Players

Healix.5819

If you want to do it in the shortest amount of play time, rather than real world time, simply do adventures. The daily experience reward from adventures is the best source of experience in the shortest amount of play time, which is worth around 700k in 30-60 min if you do most of them. If you only did daily adventures, it’d take about a week to gain the required experience for the needed masteries. If you want to go beyond just the basic masteries however, it would be best to actually explore the maps and participate in the events, since you won’t be able to farm mastery points like you can experience.

Glass cannon strategy: exploit?

Healix.5819

These things do NOT count towards event scaling:
-> players not in range
-> players who have been flaged afk
-> players who have been dead for a significant amount of time

The player that tested scaling found that dead players counted for at least 15 minutes (reddit). You can probably assume that scaling is a simple check of how many players are within the event’s area.

Originally, scaling was different, but it was changed at some point during season 1. Back then, scaling occurred every few seconds and only active players were factored. Basically, you had to be in combat to count. The problem however was that it was easily exploited and with the zerg design of season 1, became more of a problem. Large groups would destroy the target before it actually scaled.

Resolved. Thanks.

Glass cannon strategy: exploit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

To exploit is to abuse a bug/something not intended. It doesn’t matter what type of gear the player is wearing, bad players are going to die and some of them are going to waypoint and run back. When ArenaNet doesn’t want to support that, they disable the ability to waypoint, like in instanced group content.

Don’t expect it to ever change in the open world because it wouldn’t be fun, plus ArenaNet themselves have told dead people to waypoint and run back when showing off Tequatl. If you couldn’t waypoint, everyone else would be expected to revive dead players, which continue to scale up the event. On the other side, not being revived and having no options would create a boring and anti-casual experience.

It has already changed however when it comes to the living story. You can death rush bosses in season 2 for example, but not in HoT. Back in season 2, bad players, not even in glass gear, were complaining about how often they died, which created a “tedious” experience. They never bothered to learn the mechanics and instead death rushed it. For comparison, in HoT, I can’t beat …, being useless …, etc.

People who go AFK during events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

Until contribution actually matters, there will always be a way to abuse the system. You can’t stop AFKers with simple tricks because those intentionally abusing it will simply find a way, like using a macro or running into a wall. The problem with making contribution matter however is that damage is king. Those running high personal defense or playing poorly would find that they have little contribution. It would also promote selfish play when other key roles are required. The other problem is that collecting this data, especially for a large number of players, can be expensive. WildStar for example shows a scoreboard of damage done, taken and healing after events.

Those AFKing right in your face at events are simply griefers, not because they’re AFK, but because they’re scaling up the event, meaning everyone else has to do more. AFK outside of the event, then tag at the last minute for full credit and no one will even notice.

If you do not have an NCSoft account and have not purchased any of the NCSoft games, contact NCSoft’s billing/fraud support: http://us.ncsoft.com/en/charges/

It’s unlikely that forcing a chargeback for an NCSoft payment will affect GW2, however keep in mind that doing so will permanently blacklist your billing information at NCSoft as a chargeback is considered fraud and should only be done as a last resort.

Registration can be done for free by clicking the “play for free” button on the side of guildwars2.com. It’s intended to be done solo, and if you die solo, it’s a full reset. The penalty box is just to make it a little similar, plus dying means you lost control of your mind or at least the connection to the dream. If anything, while you’re in the penalty box, an NPC (a clone of you) representing the control over you should be added to the encounter. Upon the death of that NPC, you should appear downed in its place, allowing others to get you back up. Alternatively, simply add a 60 second automatic respawn.

Hint: No game I know ever did this. Guess why…

Generally, in most MMOs you can’t revive dead people while in combat.

Who hates this game now because of HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Healix.5819

The mastery system is horrible because after completing the expansion with two characters and grinding towards map completions with multiple characters I’m nowhere near to maxing out my mastery for HoT alone (note I’m a casual player) and yet no longer have the interest in replaying these maps after doing it so many times.

Obtaining the experience required for masteries can be very casual in terms of time played. Simply park alts around at various adventures and do them every day. If you can manage gold on most (~13) of them, you’ll get around 700k experience in about 30 minutes once you get used to it. If you only bother to unlock the useful/required masteries, which will make for a much more casual experience, it’ll only take about a week, or if you’d prefer everything, about a month of only doing this. Keep in mind that HoT will likely be the focus until the next expansion which is probably 2 years away at least, so there’s really no point in rushing.

If you simply want to swap back to the 32-bit client, download Gw2Setup.exe, rename it to Gw2.exe and place it in your GW2 folder where your current Gw2.exe/Gw2-64.exe is.

If you still want to clean install, you simply need to delete it. Delete your current GW2 folder. Delete your local settings by deleting the folder %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/ and if it exists, Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat. Lastly, delete any cache folders, which are found in your %temp% folder and begin with the name gw2cache.

Buy it through Anet, better safe and spend more, then be banned/hacked and out of pocket

It’s actually safer to buy it through an official 3rd party than it is directly through ArenaNet. If for whatever reason your method of payment happens to be refunded, like if your bank/credit card flags the transaction as suspicious and cancels the payment, ArenaNet will permanently ban your account with no option to recover it.

Oddly, a little after pre-purchasing, ArenaNet’s policy on this changed where they’ll revert and unban the account, but only for those buying fraudulent keys.

Open world content should never be balanced around full maps, but rather the average map with the consideration that not everyone is going to participate. That’s basically how they’ve done it. Unfortunately however, too many people seem to think that zergs are required so they don’t even try, or they just want to play on easy mode in full maps.

The core game isn’t like this.

For the optionals, yes it is. There have only been a few cases in the past however where, like adventures, a group couldn’t carry you (SAB and the gauntlet).

Silver on all but a few is easy enough that I’d expect it shouldn’t be a problem for the average player. As an alternative however, they could count attempts based on completing the objectives, which in this case would be something like 300 masks.

If you want to cheat, you don’t need to compromise your account information. If you have a decent connection, you can stream it and allow someone else to take the controls, though they’ll have to deal with a higher latency.

As for the meta event, simply AFK through it.

Gw2Setup.exe is actually just the launcher. That specific filename changes its behavior to run with the -allowinstall option. If you want a 64-bit version, simply rename Gw2-64.exe to Gw2Setup.exe, or you can just run Gw2-64.exe -allowinstall.

Assuming you’ve already installed it though, if you want to “install” it, simply rename your current GW2 folder, then run Gw2Setup.exe. When it gets to the point where it’s downloading files, simply close it. You can then put the old folder back, or move the files to the new one. You will however want to keep the launcher named Gw2.exe, rather than Gw2-64.exe.

According to the HoT site, you will need to both own HoT and login to unlock the living story for free. The purpose behind the need for logging in is to keep players active. If they were going to just give it, it should have been a pre-purchase bonus. The alternative is to keep HoT at full price for the remainder of its life. The trick is, as the price of HoT goes down over time, the missed episodes will make up that difference. ArenaNet can make it appear cheaper, but it’s actually not. After season 3, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them bundle it and raise the price back to full.

As for next expansion, it’s safe to assume that they won’t be including past seasons for free. That’s the trick to giving away the past expansions for free.

If running Gw2Setup.exe, it will ask you where to install, though it bugs on some systems any may either do nothing or begin downloading to your %temp% folder. You can simply rename it to Gw2.exe and place it wherever you want to just have it download to its current folder.

Even my abled-bodied and neurotypical friends are irritated because since they came in so late they CAN’T get a lot of the mastery points that even I have.

Tyrian mastery points? Only season 2 should be an issue for new players that don’t have it unlocked.

If you want everything, but don’t want to participate in all the content, you’re going to have problems. You won’t have enough points to unlock fractal masteries for example if you don’t touch fractals. Actually, it is possible, but it requires doing the grindy masteries to compensate. You’ll have a much better experience if you simply skip what you don’t need.

Someone else asked from a solo player’s perspective a few days ago. Here’s a list of Tyrian mastery points:

[Suggestion] Focus on Solo-play Experience

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Healix.5819

OP, the LFG tool gives up options to get to a busier map. It’s not automatic but the devs did provide you a tool to get to more people. If you choose not to use it, I’m not sure why they should re-engineer the game.

The majority of people are likely just going to login and play. They won’t even think of using the LFG tool to taxi – they’ve probably never even used it before. As a result, a lot of these people are going to find themselves on inactive maps, which is going to cause a poor experience.

Taxi’ing only worsens the problem for everyone else. They should start by removing the reserved spots for party joiners and volunteering should work in reverse with a much greater incentive (maps fill to ~125% capacity, then split, ideally into a duplicate map in terms of progression). Teaching players that group events are in fact scaled for 3+ people, not just zergs, and displaying how many people are near an event would also greatly help.

Dynamic-events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The majority of HoT’s events are on rails. Events have always been like this, it’s just that HoT makes it far more obvious. There’s no sense of randomness, however it makes it easier to play through as you’ll know where to go, rather than wondering what’s active. HoT simply lacks the smaller events/chains that have no real link to the meta and events that branch out or have variable outcomes.

For comparison, a lot of the old world was designed as a back and forth war. ArenaNet always used to use the centaurs as an example, where they would attack camps and capture villagers. Events to reclaim the camp and save the villagers would open, though if they were not completed, the centaurs would move on to attack another camp. If the attack was recaptured however, events to further push back the centaurs would open. These chains never really reset however, unlike HoT which simply resets entirely after the meta. In the past, ArenaNet usually tried to hide resets with an explanation. The problem with this style however is that in populated maps, these chains would always be stuck at the end of the success condition.

GW2 actually requires more than 2 cores if you want high-res textures. For just playing though, 2 cores should be enough, however, keep in mind that the CPU would be nearly dedicated to GW2. It’d be best to go with a 4 core, especially if you wanted to plan for future games. For an example of CPU usage, on an i7 2600k with only 3 cores, GW2 is using 90% on high settings.

An SSD will greatly improve your loading speed. Using a single HDD for everything is what can kill your performance in terms of loading. For high drive usage programs, you really want a dedicated drive so that only 1 process is using it at a time. Keep in mind that loading isn’t limited to the loading screen, but every object that appears to you. If you greatly reduce your load speed for example, it will cause stutters as you rotate the camera and objects load in. Personally, I have an older SSD and in comparison to a dedicated HDD, it’s roughly 3x faster, and on the HDD I can watch things pop in after a loading screen, like the UI and ground.

In terms of marketing, an expansion is far superior. People simply don’t care about some patch an MMO gets whereas people talk about an upcoming expansion. Expansions bring in players, whereas a flow of new content keeps them active. Moving forward, ArenaNet will likely stick with expansions with smaller living world releases in between – just enough to keep people active. They’ve already made the mistake of waiting too long after the expansion, though HoT’s release was simply at a terrible time, so it wouldn’t have made much of a difference. They should have transitioned straight into the living world a month after release.

Personally, the only thing good about the expansion model is that it gives me ample free to time to play other games.

Some network adapters have rather buggy drivers on Windows 8+, which causes the adapter to stop functioning until rebooted. If you got a new computer however, it’s unlikely that both have the same problem. You’ll want to first verify that your router is not to blame – see below. You’ll want to manually update your drivers to the latest version by visiting the manufacturer’s website. In some cases, power saving features are to blame. Open the control panel, search for network adapters/connections, right click and view the properties of your main adapter, then click configure. Under power management, uncheck the option to turn off the device and under advanced, disable any power saving or “green” features.

Your router could be crashing instead, which would cause all devices to lose network or internet access. Some older routers can be crashed fairly easily while under load, causing them to either reboot, which takes a few minutes, or stop functioning until manually rebooted. If you can determine that your router is the problem, try disabling non-essential features, such as UPnP, QoS and its firewall.

Isn't PvE supposed to be easy?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The difficulty of HoT is actually rather similar to the original beta. The game was always intended to be skill based, but it wasn’t a good business idea to put up a brick wall at the start. Back then they were experimenting with enemies dodging and running out of AoEs, and damage in general was much higher. Any of the special attacks were dodge or die moments. Have you ever been smashed by an ettin, rapid pecked by a Moa, rapid stung by a wasp or hit by the barrage of fire from an elemental? All of those special attacks would have killed you in the beta if you just stood there. Everything was nerfed after that and since then, with every major release (karka, aetherblade, etc), they’ve raised the difficulty in an attempt to improve the players.

PvE being easy is the result of most other MMOs catering to the average players; those that simply want to play without really putting in any effort. Group content in comparison can be challenging because it’s not challenging to an individual, but rather to the group as a whole. There’s others to carry those who can’t, whereas if you can’t handle solo content, you’re left with no choice.

ArenaNet has always designed around the idea of players helping players with their unique ad-hoc grouping design of events. HoT was likely balanced for gamers and intended to be explored solo, but for those who couldn’t, the active population was there for support, in the same way group events are done. I fully expect to see HoT nerfed eventually however, though if they want to cater to both sides, they’ll only do so after something new takes its place. Alternatively, like other MMOs, vertical progression would fix the problem, allowing players to overcome the content through power alone. This could easily be done through a mastery to simply take less and deal more damage in HoT.

They’re not needed, which is why they’re not exactly trivial to acquire. If you don’t care about legendaries or fractals, don’t even bother wasting your points.

8 for completing season 2.
8 for completing the various personal story arcs of each race (may be bugged).
1 for reaching 80.
5 for killing the legendaries in the Silverwastes.
1 for killing the Karka Queen.
1 for killing Tequatl.
1 for completing the jumping puzzle in the Silverwastes.
1 for completing the jumping puzzle Hidden Garden.
1 for world completion.
1 for doing all dives.
1 for finding all gold badges in the Silverwastes.
1 for shooting all the karka hatchlings in Lion’s Arch.
1 for killing chickens in the urban fractal (level 1, easy to solo).

Those 31 can be done fairly easily, which I’d guess most normal players would have partially complete just by playing. To go beyond that however will require personal effort, time and/or luck.

8 points for completing season 2’s achievements.
1 for killing Queen Chrii’kkt IV at T4.
1 for bioluminescence (requires season 2 achievements).
1 for completing Tequatl’s 10 achievements.
3 for killing each head of the great jungle wurm.
1 for collecting spoons.

You won’t be able to unlock all Tyrian masteries without either doing a massive grind (ie, collecting expensive skins) or more easily, completing fractal achievements. If you really wanted to however, note that it is possible to collect enough points solo, but it’ll take far more effort.

Note that if all you care about is a maxed mastery level, raiding is required, so it won’t be possible solo. Think of your level like achievement points – who cares?

Not sure if 7zip does it, but if the extracted file is corrupted, some programs will automatically delete the file. Some programs will also allow you to extract parts out of order, so ensure you’re starting with the first one.

Once you’ve successfully extracted Gw2.dat, you simply need to place it and Gw2.exe wherever you’d like to “install” the game. Use the -repair option to check the dat file (Gw2.exe -repair).

So unless my English is failing me again, expect a change?

To clarify, in error, Gaile said would instead of wouldn’t and that it was only her personal opinion that it shouldn’t be changed.

So yes, but no.

Empty HoT maps ... Mega Server bugged?

A lot of people simply don’t want to put in the effort. It’s far easier to simply zerg everything and the way you’re rewarded only promotes that. I can solo most events in VB for example, but I get nothing out of it. I can practically AFK in an “organized” map and get the max rewards where T4 can be achieved without trying.

The problem is, when the map doesn’t look organized, people simply leave. If there are no commanders, people don’t know what to do/where to go. You can’t get into the main maps if they’re soft capped, but a lot more people can still get in by joining through parties, which only hurts everyone else. Since the megaserver is first come first serve, it’s possible for you to get stuck in the last instance created while people are constantly leaving and joining the previous maps. If they never fill up, no new players will enter yours, yet if they never empty out, you’ll never get the opportunity to volunteer.

It only takes 3-5 decent players per area to successfully complete any meta event and in some cases, it can be far faster (3 decent zerkers vs the average zerg).

Events in VB do not seem to downscale. At least not to single player mode.

Group events scale down to 3 minimum.

Personally, most of HoT’s group events don’t feel like group events. HoT is simply at a higher difficulty level, being balanced for the upper average instead of the lower that most MMOs cater to. imo, ArenaNet didn’t want to discourage the average player, so they simply labeled them as group events.

Tried relogging…nope same empty map.

Your spot is saved for several seconds. I usually count to 10. You can also use guesting to influence the choice of overflows, as long as the map is active enough for the popular servers to have their own.

Adventures do have ties to the surrounding world, some being more obvious than others. Some events in the original game were the same way. They weren’t obvious about the story they were telling because they were meant to play out like the daily life of the NPCs.

The shooting gallery is a fairly obvious example. If you haven’t figured it out yet, it takes place in a training camp. Much like the one heart in Queensdale, they’re training new soldiers how to shoot. A lot of them could easily be actual events, like tendril torchers where you’re tasked with securing a downed airship. In bugs in the branches, you’re collecting food for your nearby friends. Some of them however do have no obvious purpose other than to be a race, but that’s still a part of the daily life experience.

If you could previously transfer the item between characters using your account bank, it should be able to go into the shared slot.

What would happen if I upgraded the account?

You can upgrade a banned account, but it’ll still be banned.
