I have to admit, that screenshot is showing some pretty lame stuff.

I’m not sure what the second post has to do with the first, other than perhaps pointing out that the methods mentioned in the second post don’t appear to be effectively stopping the problems shown in the first. I doubt that was the intention of the copy/paste, though.

You are right. That was not my intention. See my second post. I should have been clearer.

They’re building applications that will auto-detect and ban bots. Doing this requires time (obviously) and data collection. If they ban all the bots manually, they lose the opportunity to collect data, and refine the tools.

Botting hurts their image, and their profit. So worry not, it is a top issue for them.

I don’t want to speak for Jon here, but you guys already know quite well why you’re not getting a time frame.

If they said, “Well, we would like to deliver these updates in about a month.” day 31/32, the internet world would explode into a heap of pitchfork waving, and “broken promises” talk.

Given that I do work similar to that of Good Ole’ Jon here, I would never be so foolish as to give any kind of specific estimate.

I know we’re all excited, but we’re not nearly as excited as they are to show us what they’ve worked hard to complete.

Is it possible that this is a bug only affecting a number of people?

Hmm, try using QZ and link with quickness from pet swap trait. With the 4 sec of quickness buff, you will see the difference very very very obviously.

I’d be happy with weapons that had a variance on the skills you would receive. Such as, shortbow A may be more focused on stuns and such, where shortbow B may be more focused on straight DPS. For a bit more customization and such.

Or even better (and this has been suggested before) that each weapon would have a few different skills for each slot, so you could further customize the skills you’re going to use. Or, you know, they could just add more weapons.

But I do disagree that the combat is stale. I rather enjoy it.

If you look at the experience you get from level one, you’re pretty much getting the same kind of experiences you would take part in after working through a quest grind in a standard classic mmo. The idea being that you can take part in the majority of the type of experiences the game has to offer from the get go.

It’s a great idea, and is almost overwhelming the first few days you’re thrown into the mix. The “issue” being (I use the word issue lightly) that since you’ve so much on your plate from the very beginning, players are able to digest through the types of experiences the game has to offer rather quickly. As opposed to something where you’re working through road blocks. Such as gaining item score. Hitting max level. Attunement. Or finding a magic key. The type of game we’re used to playing is where we play X game 1-80, then Z game at the cap. Not so here.

To be fair, they had always stated that there would not be a traditional end game. What one person calls endgame in guild wars 2, another may not. I personally run a dungeon or two each day. Kill a few dragons if I run across them. Wvw with a large guild. And am working on crafting / purchasing a few exotics. This works for me for the time being. But some other players desire a structured experience.

I am of course rather curious to see what kinds of content they release next. (TIP – They’ve hinted at November.)

Dungeon Finder alternative. Improved LFG idea.

Hunterdan.4921

Good evening. I would like to start off by saying that I am a satisfied player. I am here only to offer an idea with a smile. I’ve seen dev comments on improving the LFG and party finding system a bit, and am sure you already have something in the works, but I would still like to throw some things your way in the hopes that they may be helpful.

  • Intro I tend to believe that the idea of not including an autoparty dungeon finder is due to the notion that it takes away a layer of the grouping experience. You never need to see the names of the people you group with. You never need to put in an effort into finding good people to play with. With a dungeon finder, you just click, and go. Good for chain running instances. Not so great for building a community.
  • Idea This forms around the idea of allowing players to add themselves to a server wide (Or even cross server?) “Dungeon List” that shows which dungeons, and which modes / paths they wish to run. Player information could also be shown. Name. Profession. Level. Rating. (Voted by players at the end of a dungeon. Jerkfaces be kittened.) You could even go so far as to allow players to leave a small note that would also show in the list. Such as, “War and rng, ready to roll!” and so on.
  • Function This tool could be under a current menu, it’s own new menu, or even a button on the minimap. Clicking the button brings the player to a screen that shows which dungeons they’ve run in the past, (Something I believe I’ve seen devs discuss.) with two buttons at the bottom. “Find Party.” and “Create Party.” Find Party brings the player to a menu that will allow them to browse a list of currently forming parties, and join them on the fly. Or, if no groups are forming, they may advertise themselves, and the dungeons they want to run. Check boxing which dungeons, modes, and paths they’re interested in. Create Party pulls up the player list itself. Where a group leader can browse the players interested, or form a party that can be actively joined.

I feel these two functions are important for various reasons. Firstly, allowing players who are interested in running a dungeon to merely click Find Party, and hit a few check boxes to advertise their intent is possibly easy enough, and inviting enough for players to actually use. I can add myself to the list, and continue on with my adventure.

Secondly, the Create Party screen will provide exactly what you want. Information about the person you’re grouping with. If you invite BahBahBlackKnight, and he’s awesome, you’re going to remember him. The next time you see him on that list, your’e going to grab him up. If you see someone who was a jerkface, or just has a low rating, you’ll avoid them.

This system has the capability of helping players find groups, while also assisting in building community, where an auto dungeon finder does not.

  • Closing I realize this is a tall order. But these are the things I feel could make an outstanding LFG tool. I imagine some of these ideas are not new to you. But in the chance that I may touch on something that has not been considered, I feel justified in making my post. We’ve all seen LFG tools go unused. I feel this mostly comes down to ease of use, presentation, and convenience. Which how well you guys have streamlined the mmo experience, I have no doubt you could pull something like this off rather well.

Have an excellent night!

GW2 gives you that gameplay format, without the intention to change it at level cap. This gives players the feeling that there is nothing to do.

Is it Massive? yes.
Is it Multiplayer? yes.
Is it Online? yes.

If your having problems:
+ Check your gear…it does matter.
+ Check you skills/build…it does matter. If what you are using is not working try something else.
+ Join a guild that has active players leveling. Makes grouping up substantially easier.
+++++ When an event starts people in the zone are probably unaware its going on. Call it out in /map chat and link the nearest waypoint so they can get there. You would be suprised how many will show up.

^ Good recommendations. I found being in a high pop guild to be rather enjoyable. Though I found a good group of people.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hunterdan.4921

I’d think that if people were mounted, they would be less likely to stop and interact with the world / player base.

While there is little stopping me from strolling on by a DE or a player in need, as it stands. I feel I would be more likely to ride on by if dismounting were a step in the process.

Along with that, really, when I’m riding around on a mount, I really don’t pay attention to anything around me other than my map. I’ve no concern with what’s around me, because I can mostly just outrun whatever I may run into. How it is now, I have to watch out. Else I’ll wonder my way into trouble. I have to cut my way through the world. Sure, I can run through everything, but my chances of dying, and having to pay that pesky wp fee are a good bit higher.

Don’t get me wrong. Mounts are awesome. I’m just thinking of reasons as to why they’ve not been included.

So I just completed my first dungeon.

MMO Manifesto vs. what we have now

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hunterdan.4921

Hunterdan.4921

There is no grind required. You can have the same abilities and stats as everyone else without grinding anything.

“We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2, no one enjoys that, no one finds it fun.”

Can I have the dungeon armor that I like without grinding? No.
Why are dungeons a grind? Because they’re not fun.
Why aren’t they fun? Because they’re poorly designed.
Why are they poorly designed? Because the difficulty is artificially created via huge health pools and huge damage on mobs, instead of clever mechanics.

Oh, so I can’t have that dungeon armor then? Nope.

You can’t just say that to people. ArenaNet need people to buy their expansions to keep the game going. How do you get people to buy expansions? By making the previous content entertaining.

I see what you’re saying, but you have to understand that there are people who enjoy doing dungeons. Who enjoy the fact that it’s hard to obtain. Some people enjoy the “grind.” Will everyone? Of course not. Which is why the advantage of doing dungeons is cosmetic.

Playing the game itself is of little grind. We’re rewarded for everything. Loot drops. Xp out the wazoo. Dungeon content is in addition to the core gameplay. But at cap, the dungeons are what people focus on.

Should there be a balance between those who want to grind all day, and those who want to look cool for minimal effort? Sure. I think that could use a bit of tweeking. Given the fact that they continue to patch the game, and make adjustments shows us that they intend on doing so.

Discussion on End game design philosophy.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hunterdan.4921

Hunterdan.4921

Why are so many people still using this stupid “endgame” phrase? Traditional endgame is terrible, and I’m glad GW2 does away with it. This idea that the only fun stuff is at the end and everything else is filler until you’re max level is one of the most absurd ideas to ever rear it’s ugly head in gaming.

“But this game would be so good if it had a way to constantly increase your stats post-max level like in WoW…”

That crap sucked. That’s why this game is different.

“…or if there was some way to get better gear than other players in sPvP by playing longer…”

No, that crap also sucks. That’s another reason this game is different.

“…and in other games I can farm…”

Farming sucks, and it draws players away from content. It funnels players to specific content instead of spreading them out across the game. You wanna see how well funneling players to specific content works? Take a look at pretty much any area in WoW that’s not the main quest hub for the most recent expansion. Dead as dead gets.

Everything you people keep asking for sucks. That’s why Guild Wars 2 was created; so the rest of us who care about gameplay and don’t need some infinite climb in numbers “endgame” to satiate a short-man complex can finally have an MMORPG that’s actually worth playing.

Good posts!

Keep in mind, I only use the term “end game” because that is how anet addressed the same topic. Saying, “The endgame starts at level 1” and so on. Which sounds like a marketing pitch, but is entirely accurate, as we’ve all seen. Which I feel is a good thing.

I’m merely pointing out that a possible reason for the complaining about a lack of things to do at cap is because players have the ability to access the exciting content from the get go. Expediting the process by which they go, “Hey, this is fun!” to"Hey, what else is there to do?"

Again, this is more of an observation than an opinion. I don’t really want the old quest to cap, then raid content format.

Discussion on End game design philosophy.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hunterdan.4921

Hunterdan.4921

I have some thoughts that I would like to share. I know some may agree, while others may disagree. Feel welcome to do either, as I would like to encourage discussion. Just please note that I am not writing this to speak poorly of Guild Wars 2.

So, the design philosophy of Guild Wars 2, was to give the player the ability to experience everything the game had to offer upfront. Rather than questing for 60-90 levels, then shifting the way you play to a dungeon / raid style of gameplay when you hit the cap. We’re able to WvW and sPvP from the beginning. We’re able to fight larger, boss like mobs with groups of other players from early levels. Dungeons provide a structured, and difficult set of content for players that enjoy such from an early-ish level. We’re doing the exciting, “end game” style activities throughout the process of progressing through the game.

Personally, I enjoy this philosophy. But I think part of the issue people are having, is that they’ve digested the exciting parts (Or, rather, what they personally enjoy taking part in.) of the content faster than they would through a normal quest -> raid mmo since all of this content is available up front, rather than promised at cap.

Does anyone agree?

For example. When I first started, I, along with a number of friends exclaimed almost a feeling of being (Happily) overwhelmed with the amount of things we could run off to do right from the beginning. Given, we were lost in a brand new world. But still. Vistas. POI’s. DE’s running rampant. WvW. An new and unfamiliar questing style. That’s a great deal considering what many mmo’s offer right off the bat. Note – I am not suggesting Guild Wars 2 has more / better content than other mmo’s. Or that what other mmo’s offer is poor. I’m just making a comparison of what is available to players are various portions of progressing through the game.

Let me close by saying that I absolutely love this game. I don’t think this design philosophy is bad, wrong, or mundane. Quite the contrary. I think it’s different. I enjoy what it is. And look forward to what I hope it will grow into.

So, those are my thoughts. Comments?

TL;DR – Since Guild Wars 2 offers you an “End game” experience right from the get go, players are getting their fill of this type of experience faster than they would in a “normal” quest to cap, do raids kind of game. Thus, some of the frustrations we’re seeing.

I’m not a huge, huge fan of raiding end game. I’m lazy, and in no way dedicated enough to do such a thing. But, I do enjoy something to look forward to.

I enjoy that Guild Wars 2 gives us the ability to just enjoy the leveling, the wandering, the general experience without the pressure of hurrying, so I may take part in the raiding portion of the game with all of my friends.

But, I do like having something to look forward to. Something I can do, that I could not do before. Dungeons fall under this somewhat. I would prefer if that “new” thing was not the be all, end all of the game experience….but I think having something to work towards would scratch an itch.

What do you guys think?

Example of something that would be ignored. – Dungeons are too hard! I just tried to do one for the first time, and I died! OMG ITS BROKEN FIX NAO.

Example of something that might not be ignored. – While I enjoy the dungeons, I would love to see bosses go through various phases as you dps them down. Possibly with branching skills and tactics that will fire off during one fight, and may be entirely different the next time you encounter that fight. Also, I don’t have a huge problem with graveyard zerging in story mode, but maybe you could lock the spawn point during explore modes? Or put them further away? Lock the boss room door entirely? Or greatly increase the length of the debuff.
