A-ish.

I like PVE. I like the new dungeons a great deal. I understand why people complain about gear and such, but I’m rather apathetic over all the hoopla.

I get the strangest starship trooper feel…

Standing outside the cave that’s blocked off…I know the braincrab is in!

So… will the cave be reachable today?

I think the cave is their nest. It looked like there was some big laser thing being built on the island. I bet we fire that sucker into the cave to open it up, then pillage like vikings.

I think our version may have bugged a bit. Our dudes just build the treb, no fight, then straight to the ships.

The island was stuff was pretty cool. Building roads and bridges and such. The zerg we had was rather hilarious. We had a good 5-8 people just run right off the end of the bridge while the NPC’s were building, haha!

I’m fairly certain the “nest” will be for tomorrow. Should be neat!

I think many of us saw the image of the ring posted, and assumed there would also be a power ring, and a precision ring, a healing ring, etc. But what if there isn’t?
What if the ring shown, was the only ring? It’s stats base lined for running dungeons? Putting everyone on a plateau that they can design pve dungeons around. Modifying variable being your infusion, and whatever weapons you happen to take along. Sure, I could equip my higher DPS ring, but agony would down me. Again, now I am at a plateau that they can design the dungeon around.

Thoughts?

Unlikely. All the condition based builds would be raging even more if they decided to do something that dumb. We need more gear stat variety, not less and certainly not everyone using MF/Power/Precision XD

That was just for the ring, good sir.

Ahh hell, I dunno. I just wanna know!

Good post Mr. Fox. I tend to agree that Ascended gear will likely be mostly for dungeons. With infusions, the obtaining of infusions, and the messing around with such being the feeling of progression some players desire.

Ok, let me share some of my thoughts on all of this.

Yes, it looks like we will get Ascended Gear from sources other than Fractals of the Mist, which is a good thing for those who will want the minor stat increases for Ascended Gear, yet have no desire to play FotM. This is a good thing and fits with the overall game design. So, no forced Dungeon Runs to get Ascended gear.

This initial FotM release only includes Ascended Rings and Back Armor. This greatly dilutes the “gear inflation” factor introduced by the Ascended Gear.

It seems pretty clear, putting all the information released thus far together, that future Ascended Gear items will be released to compliment major content additions to Fractals of the Mist. Fractals of the Mist is slated for ongoing expansion over the “months and years to come”.

I would speculate that we will not see full sets of Ascended gear any sooner than one year from now. It’s possible the interval could be even longer.

This is about as mild and manageable an introduction of purpose driven “gear inflation” as we have ever seen in an MMO and I can’t imagine a more “gentle” method of gear inflation than what we appear to be getting for GW2 via Ascended Gear.

Yes, there is a minor stat boost involved here, but it seems clear that the biggest purpose of Ascended gear will be the introduction of Infusion Slots and direct Agony mitigation, which, at this point, seems will be exclusively relevant to the FotM Dungeon Experience and more specifically relevant to players who will be seeking to push the incremental difficulty/reward boosting system for consecutive FotM runs to the absolute limit.

Some, but not all, non FotM players may eventually wish to acquire basic Ascended Gear for the stat boosts. Some, but not all, FotM players will actively pursue Agony Mitigation in order to push their FotM experience to the absolute limits. (Many players may be perfectly happy to complete one to three waves at a go, with no time/desire to push deeply into the difficulty progression).

By no means is this new, measured “gear inflation” a necessary progression for most players. Most of the future inflation is horizontal, via introduction of new gear slots sporting Ascended Gear options, rather than vertical. We have no idea how Arenanet plans to expand the game through major expansions. Will they raise the level cap? We just don’t know. There could be further vertical progression in the years ahead, but if the inflation between Exotic and Ascended and the slow horizontal build out of Ascended Gear is any indication, any future vertical progression is likely to be very shallow.

Well put! Not enough well thought out responses around here. This thread seems to be heading towards a reasonable discussion.

I personally hypothesize that exotic gear will remain competitive due to the increased customization. (Baring whatever they do with infusion slots) Remember fellas, they’re introducing 200 new recipes and a new gatherable resource. Could it be that some of these new recipes are for runes, sigils, and gems that would upgrade exotic gear?

I see Ascended gear as being the “slightly higher base stat along with infusion” dungeon gear, while exotic remains a “customize however you wish to take advantage of your play style.”

Just a hypothesis at the moment. But at the moment, I just cant chew on the idea of anet throwing out exotic gear, and their entire upgrade system. I need more info!

Full breakdown in new mechanics

So, grinding.

It’s not like grinding wasn’t present in this game…. people grinded for their exotics, dungeon gear etc…..

The grinding statements made by Anet were mostly in reference to a necessary grinding through levels to get to an “end game”, but people like to take it out of context.

There’s also a lot of people in here making the false assumption that you need to run the new dungeon to receive ascended gear. Not true.

“Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. "

If you’re not interested in running a “grindy” dungeon, don’t.

there are real issues of miscommunication by the company, and they arent clearing at all, and this can go inb only one direction, worse, and worse.

1)they dont clear if the ascendend tier is the last tier in terms of stats, or if with future content\expansion they are going to increase item stats and level cap too.

2)they dont clear how infusion work, we only know that provide as sideeffect agony resistance

3)someone of us (me included) dont understand why release this new tier, update by update, when one of their statement was: “WHEN ITS READY”… and this tier its not ready!

i think that as customer, i have the right to have some clear information.
I dont like to act like a kitten… but i dont like to be fooled too.

I’m with you Ganzo. I greatly desire information. A typically transparent staff has been rather mum on the issue. I feel this is likely because they want to trickle information through news outlets. Or, they may be required to keep silent since numerous news outlets are releasing information on the new content as we speak. I’ve no idea.

Until I’m shown otherwise, I will probably keep the mindset that exotic gear, with it’s wider range of customization (And possible greater upgrades coming along with the content) will prove to be on par, or better than ascended items in instances not specifically designed for the ascended gear.

Is this speculation? Of course. We’re all likely incorrect on details. But at this point I refuse to believe that a development studio would throw out an entire foundation of gear, an upgrade customization system, and their stated principles to add 3 pieces of gear that grant an “8% stat increase for people who desire a progressive loot system.” I’m not buying it until I see it.

I feel this most of this negativity stems purely from conjecture spewed by doomsayers that lack a full picture.

I wish that were true, even if it is convoluted.

“Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items. So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items. All Legendary items going forward will be of Ascended power. "

- Linsey Murdock

Yeah, I know. I suppose convoluted speculation is all we have at this point.

We’ll see. But I’m still not going with “the sky is falling.” I still feel this is an intended design choice. Not a reaction to people saying, “I’m bored! Give me lootz!”

Content development cycles are too long for a team to just up throw out their principles in a matter of weeks. If their principle goals changed when they started developing the content, we would have seen that reflected long before the game launched.

It doesn’t take months to add extra stat points. If ANET didn’t do that, then there wouldn’t be a problem with the system.

Anyways, off to bed have to be up in less than 5 hrs.

But why create the problem in the first place? Just to appease people who want to see their numbers go higher? That notion just doesn’t add up to me. I guess we’ll see.

Later man!

Which is one stance, sure.

However, I would argue that if what they are working is a design departure from years of public statements, press releases, interviews, and precedent, then they absolutely should be open and transparent of that process.

The important word there is ‘if’. IF this is the start of a real gear treadmill, I’ll also be pretty kittened. I’m willing to wait and see what they’re actually doing before I start demanding ritual sacrfice, though.

How long are you willing to wait? It seems like the answer won’t be given until a future content update.

I would imagine they will talk about this more openly after the content launches. The devs have been rather quiet on the issue, which is not typical. I could see it being stated that they’re just not allowed to talk about it until it’s out. We’ll see I suppose.

You don’t have to grind to access the content. As in, I don’t need to grind to get to max level so I can play an entirely different game. You do need to work for rewards. What else would you expect? Them to just give stuff away?

" So say you’ve completed a few fractal runs and have access to scale 3 difficulty, your group disbands, and you head back into Lion’s Arch to form a new group. If one of the group members is currently only at scale 1 difficulty, that will be what the rest of the group is set at until you complete more fractals to advance the difficulty scale higher "

So how can any one say players will not be locked out, this is not a gateing mechanic.

Say i take a break for a few months i come back all is see is

LFM FOTM lvl 13 only!

Talk about dividing your community.

People will hit a difficulty wall in an infinitely scaling dungeon. You will need to go back to lower difficulty runs, which will mean there will be a demand for low difficulty people.

MMORPG.com also said the difficulty scale resets once per week. A piece of vital information that I was surprised to not see on other news outlets.

I don’t need a guide to new dungeon, i’m an 6 years old player of Gw1, following gw2 whit every blog post, interview etc, and no one devs of arenanet said that they will introduce this time of progression whit gear.In gw1 you don’t need to to dungeon for equip against a condition whit some better gear than the outhers dungeons. We are more people here against this kitten meccanics, you think that we are all stupid and we can’t learn and read somethings about this?

Well, it does spell out how the Agony works pretty clearly, and if you can see how the new tier is not even necessary, and seems pretty easy to obtain.

Simple research would actually calm a vast majority of people down, but they like to post the same quotes over and over again. There’s still no treadmill, Legendaries are still = to the top tier, and they never ever stated that there wouldn’t possibly be a new tier. They’ve explicitly stated new item types would be added in future content in the past, regardless of its new weapon types or new tiers.

Sadly, people in here are only interested in feeding their rage, and making soap-box statements about betrayal and such. It’s like this is some kind of fanatical political rally. Either way! The new content looks great. Can’t wait!

No, cause i love gw1 and no one at arenanet saw that they will introduce this kind of dungeon/grind on gear.
You don’t play Gw1 so you don’t say.

You’re right. I don’t. There’s a rather good reason for that. I heavily disliked gw1. I would not want Guild Wars 2 to be like the original game. I expect the developer to add new content. I also expect them to hold to their manifesto.

I do not feel they’ve added a gear treadmill. I also do not feel that exotic gear, and the upgrade component system they’ve run with throughout the entire game will be rendered irrelevant.

My point of view, like your own, is based upon vague information and a sizable amount of speculation. Unlike you, I’ve decided to wait and see what we get. Rather than rant like a lunatic on a street corner.

TL;DR – This is not about adding vertical progression. It’s about balancing the gap (Of difficulty in obtaining) between exotic and legendary gear. As far as the stat increase…I have no idea. So you’ll want it more?

So they’re going to balance the effort gap by adding a statistical gap and that’s not vertical progression because…? You don’t fix one gap by adding another.

Certainly not. You fix the gap by either making one side more difficult to obtain, the other easier to obtain, or adding something in the middle. They seem to be going with the latter. But again, we’re only speculating until we actually get to check it out.

they are not going with the latter. if they were, ascended would have stats no better than exotic, but would look cooler.

I can agree with that notion. The stat bump is a mystery to me at this point.

But ascended is equal to legendary statistically speaking. And that’s after ArenaNet boosts legendary up just for the sake of creating this gear gap which didn’t exist before. If this isn’t vertical progression what is it?

Would it make more sense of them to keep Legendary weapons stats the same as exotic? Maybe so. Since I believe the idea was to transmute your legendary skin onto your choice exotic gear anyway. But now, there may not be a reason to do that anymore, or is there?

I’m just posing questions. Share your thoughts.

With the addition of ascended gear that holds higher stats than exotic + upgrade slot gear…they effectively render exotic gear, along with the upgrades, useless. Meaning that all that runes and sigils crafters make and sell are worthless. Also meaning that numerous areas of crafting are even more useless. Would they really do this? With the addition of the new harvested resource, and 200 new recipes, I see a few possibilities.

A. The addition of new craftable upgrades that render exotics on par with, or better than ascended gear while outside of the ascended gear’s specific or general purpose.

B. Crafting professions can now make infusion slot upgrades that can entirely take the place of runes and sigils, again, rendering exotic gear and the upgrade mechanic that followed loot all the way to the exotic tier, useless.

C. We can all just craft 200 new funny hats!

I’ve no idea. I tended to lean towards the A option myself. But I’m not so sure at this point. To me, a gear treadmill is the main design focus of a game such as World of Warcraft. You’re constantly working towards new gear, which is continually added. Gear you absolutely need to progress, or experience content. Something Anet has been against from the beginning, as so many of you have pointed out. As of now, I just don’t see a single tier of new loot, mostly designed around running a dungeon that contains rather small stat increases (We’ll see on the rest of the pieces) as a treadmill. It has been stated that it is not their intention to add new loot every 3 months. (Does that mean they’ll do it every 6?) I can still run the dungeon without it. I can still kill people in wvw who have it. I can also obtain this loot by numerous means.

In the end, we do not yet know the full intent. Which I personally wish they would share. They’ve stated that this is just one step in the long line of steps to come. Will those steps lead to a continual vertical progression? I have no idea. But I am rather skeptical of the suggestion at the moment. Maybe I’m just a trustworthy fool. But I’d just rather not jump to conclusions until I see for myself.

But again, we’re only speculating until we actually get to check it out.

this is absolutely about adding vertical progression
if this is about balancing the gap in difficulty of obtaining exotics and legendaries — that means ascended will be harder than exotic to acquire, which means, yes, gear treadmill.

The stat increase, yes, gear treadmill. They added it because there’s some people who just can’t play a game without endlessly increasing their numbers relative to their old numbers. Exotics were supposed to be it, the cap, the top-end — and legendaries were equal to that, but looked awesome.

If all they wanted to address was the gap in the time needed between exotic and legendary, they could have done it without a new tier. Add hard to find exotics that look slightly cooler (OH, WAIT, THAT ALREADY IS A THING), add legendaries that look less cool but are easier to get.

This? This is just them trying to reshape their game into a WoW clone.

Since we’re both basing this on speculation, I suppose we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I do not feel that adding a single new tier to fill the gap between exotic and legendary constitutes as a gear treadmill. Nor do I feel that this is a “sign for the future of constant new gear additions! omg treadmill!”

I personally still subscribe to the idea that it’s possible that a few of the 200 new recipes coming along with this update could be related to crafted upgrade slot items that could very well balance exotics against ascended (ascended being more useful for their infusion / dungeon needs) items. But hey, I’m only guessing.

Making wild claims that this is the beginning of the end with the WoW conversion coming is rather over the top, though. And awfully cynical might I add.

I think people are making mountains out of molehills. A new tier of loot does not equate to OMG NEW LOOT EVERY 3 MONTHS THAT WE HAVE TO GET TO STAY COMPETITIVE.

It will be a normal, accepted part of the game hours after it becomes available.

It likely already is, because everyone who does not subscribe to that design philosophy has or will have quit.

And, actually.. yeah, it does mean that. They’re giving us 3 Ascended now. Later we will get more Ascended gear. What happens when every slot is Ascended? Do you HONESTLY think they’ll stop? It took 3 months after release to go back on a design promise they’ve made for YEARS — do you think that a year from now when everyone is in full Ascended and the Pandas start crying for more progression, that Anet will say “No not this time LOL!”

No, they’ll release more gear. They caved once and have shown that they will cave to the tears of the Pandas, they have shown they don’t give two damns about their gw1 player base or the gw2 player base that is here BECAUSE we don’t have to chase gear endlessly.

I disagree with you, and your wildly negative speculation entirely. I’ll just post a point I already made.

The gap is referring to the difficulty in obtaining. It’s not about breaking manifesto, or adding vertical progression. It’s about balancing rewards. Legendaries are so out of reach that many players (myself included) really did not consider ever obtaining. What are they to do? Make legendaries easier to obtain? Ascended gear gives me something to work towards, but is not necessary for me to enjoy the game. I WvW on a normal basis. I’m not all geared out with exotics, and yet I still manage to kill plenty of players and avoid getting rofl-stomped unless I come up against a lone guardian or thief. And that has less to do with their gear, and more to do with the profession and skill of the player.

A few stat points (Yes yes, I know about the 8% and what not) are not going to make or break one player fighting another. Furthermore, the slow introduction of this tier set to the game will likely insure that the majority of players will have a piece or two before the remaining pieces of the set are released. Since, like everything else in this game, you’re rewarded for doing pretty much anything. So, when you do come across that jerk-face with his ascended gear, you’ll likely have a few pieces yourself.

This would of course be speculation on my part, but that’s all anyone is doing at this point. I feel speculation should be reasonable. To assume on the side of negativity is foolish. I think we’ll just have to wait and see. If ascended gear turns out to be a terribly game breaking and unpopular addition to the game a few weeks down the road, I have no doubt it would be addressed. But to expect them to just toss something out because the internet fervor assumes the sky is falling is ridiculous.

People aren’t over reacting, they are just making it perfectly clear to A-net what they think about this “addition”.

Maybe it wont stop this ‘ascended’ tier, but the outcry may hopefully stop any further tiers being introduced

There’s nothing to stop. They have already said:

“Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.”

There are no future tiers.

Right now legendaries are on par with exotics, there is no jump. When ascended weapons are released they will be buffed to be on par with ascended weapons, when this happens there is still no jump. They could easily release double ascended SSJ3 uber gold gear down the road if they wanted to, and buff legendaries with it.

If with gap they mean the difficulty of obtaining legendaries compared to exotics, that would mean ascended is going to be harder to get than exotic items. With exotics currently only being available for loads of karma, lots of dungeon runs or rare expensive crafting mats, you’ll get an idea of how hard it is going to be to get ascended items. This would mean that there is going to be minority out there who outperforms the majority simply because of superior gear. There is only a 5 stat difference now, but when they have released the whole ascended set it could be a 60 stat difference, equal to a full set of divinity runes. Some people say “ascended gear doesn’t have upgrade slots”, but all we’ve seen right now is the ring, and they have the stats from the upgrade baked in the baseline stats. The same logic could be used for armor pieces, by having pre-selected runes in them. Heck, they could have a random superior rune baked in, to create a big long grind.

They have said there will be other ways of obtaining ascended items, but they would still have to be very hard to get otherwise they no longer close the gap between exotic and legendary. If not, it would only give Arenanet more reasons to introduce yet another rarity to keep the treadmill going.

You’re over exaggerating the difficulty in obtaining exotics a bit here. I have a near full set, and I’ve not done anything to obtain them other than killing dragons and doing dungeons every now and then.

Latest update from Anet contains this about the FotM Dungeon:

“The dungeon will remember your progress, and will poll the party’s levels when you enter, scaling the dungeon to the highest common attained level.”
“It’s a true challenge, but as you hit higher and higher scales, the dungeon will get more and more rewarding.”

Seriously Anet, are you guys smoking kittens or something ? I agree there should be harder content that is more rewarding, but gating it like this is just . . .

What’s wrong with this? A dungeon that never ends, becoming progressively more difficult as you progress. I find this to be a rather exciting idea. Did you want it to never end, and have the difficulty remain the same?

They are creating a stat gap between exotic and legendary with ascend being in the middle…… at least thats how it reads in the announcement made by Chris.

That is the whole point. They are creating a stat where before there was not.

So that they can say that ascended are the stop gap for legendaries. They are creating their own need for a stop gap.

The only difference from legendaries and exotics before was aesthetics. Now after creating this new stats gap (in the first place), they are going to fill it up.

It makes no sense, other then to add Gear Progression and Power Creep.

I really don’t think this is going to establish a Power Creep. Exotic gear was far too easy to obtain. I’ve mulled my way to 80, and around a bit after that, and have obtained a number of Exotics with little direct effort. Were I to gear out, my only course of action after that would to be to look towards legendaries. Which are so far out of my league, I would never obtain them.

That’s the gap they’re intending to fill. Something rarer (We would assume) than exotics, but not quite as insane to obtain as legendaries.

As for the stat increase…I have no idea. So you want it more?

You can do the new content with exotics.
That is not how the dungeons work.

It is true you can enter the new content with exotics. The problem comes from as you progress through the dungeon you will hit a wall no matter how good you are because you dont have ascended gear because of the new condition that enemies will cast on players. You cannot get far in the dungeon no matter how good you are without having grinding out gear ahead of time.

I do not feel you will have to grind out gear prior to running the new dungeon. It is very likely that doing the dungeon will be the most effective (But not only) way to obtain the ascended loot. Remember, the new dungeon never ends. It just continues to get harder as you progress, with rewards being awarded along the way.

I take this to mean that it will likely be a gradual increase of difficulty / agony rather than a wall. Just my thoughts.

(I swear, sometimes when I reply…it posts just my quote and not my message. Then I get an infraction, which is not cool.)

And adding Ascended actually widens the effort gap, because now there’s another tier to work on.

I think that may be the point. Legendaries were intended to be very long term goals that took legendary effort. People got to the point where they were ready to start on that journey (and many finished it) far faster than ANet anticipated. I’m guessing that screwed up their long term goal for the game, so they are trying to fix it.

I could see this being rather true. I think the other end of the of the stick is that many players felt they had nothing else to work for. Legendaries were so far off and away from what many would want to go through to obtain. So, adding something in between is rather nice. I now have something I want to work towards.

Have him keep trying! They go up and down.
