I’m not sure if GW2 has problems with SLI, but GW2 does have problems with slow processors since GW2 requires a beefy single thread processor. What CPU do you have?

@Tilrune, that graphics card you linked is the 2GB version of the GTX 650Ti. Personally, you won’t need the extra 1GB of RAM that card comes with. If you want to spend about 180 on a card:

Would be awesome if it was in stock (not sure if you want to wait for it)

Or…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500275 -GTX 570
After the rebate it’s got a pretty nice price.

Edit: AND you get Duke Nukem! I’d buy the card just for the sake it comes with Duke Nukem (sarcasm)

1GB is easily usable on these video cards, so 2GB would be a boon.

It depends on the applications running. From my experience in my normal operations, I never use more than 3/4 of a GB when running GW2. Either way, the GTX 660 rocks the same 2GB capacity for a few bucks more while the 5/4 GB on the GTX 570 is more than enough to run GW2 with all your desired high resolution textures.

If you’re determined to go on a budget build, I recently purchased a GTX 650Ti (1GB) for my siblings as a Christmas present who want to play GW2 but couldn’t because they inherited my old 9800GT which is slightly antiquated Out of curiosity (and to make sure it wasn’t DoA) I tossed it in my rig to see how well it performed. On max settings, besides supersampling, I was able to pull 25-35 frames in LA, and on lowest settings I could pull 75+ frames. So, if you don’t mind lowering some settings, then the card is an awesome budget buy. I got it on newegg for 110 after rebate (and it came with Assassin’s Creed III).

Newegg gave the description of that computer as ‘Gaming and Entertainment’. If I had to toss my vote in, its 95% entertainment, 5% gaming. That graphics card will go excellent in any home theater PC, but won’t go very far for gaming.

As Covis said above, everything looks decent specs wise besides the video card. If you’re looking for a budget buy for a graphics card I recently purchased a GTX 650Ti for my siblings who want to play GW2 but couldn’t because they inherited my old 9800GT which was an excellent card for its time, but its very outdated now. For kicks (and to make sure it wasn’t DOA) I tossed it in my rig and tested the quality. I was able to toss everything to max settings (aside from supersampling of course) and could run around LA gettings 25-35 frames. Modifying the options to a lower setting, I don’t recall what I changed, I was able to get 35-40 frames around LA, then on lowest settings I was getting 75+. I got the card for 110 (after rebate on newegg and got a free copy of assassin’s creed III).

If you’re more into the intensive side of GW2 (WvW, large scale dynamic events, etc) then I would bump up to the 150-200 dollar range and get a GTX 560Ti (normal edition or 448 edition) or a GTX 570, or a GTX 660 (if you can find one that cheap).

Obviously you can run ATI cards as well, I’m just unfamiliar with what is comparable to the above listed Nvidia cards.

For reference, I run a GTX 560Ti 448 edition and it runs GW2 at max settings while getting 35+ frames everywhere besides WvW, where it dips down to a 25+ frames.

My younger brother (not the aforementioned siblings) runs a GTX 560Ti (normal edition) and it fares out almost as well as my card.

I would check to see how much RAM you are using under a typically load of your computer. If it’s anywhere near 3GB (even though you have some extra) then I would say that is the culprit.

Another thought would be if you are running out of RAM, how much of your pagefile are you using? Pagefile is like RAM, but its just space reserved on the hard drive for RAM to use. Pagefile is used when things get tight on space or information stored on RAM isn’t often accessed. If you haven’t messed with the pagefile settings on your computer, then it’s prolly at its default size, which is normally 2x the amount of RAM you have installed.

Note: Pagefile is ultra slow compared to RAM since its stored on a hard drive.

Judging from your brief system specs that you posted. You may not have enough RAM to run the game at the settings you want. My PC when running GW2 (plus firefox, pidgin, steam, and some other small programs) uses almost 4GB. I run GW2 at highest settings on my machine.

You graphics card also looks like it only has 512MB or 1GB of RAM. 512 is most likely too small, but if you have the 1GB version, that should be enough.

I’m also running into memory issues, but it’s because I have some bad sticks in my rig at the moment. I have to wait for santa to give me the 12GB I wanted.

AMD Trinity A10-5800k or AMD 8120?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

I’ve never bought AMD before, but I did a quick look on the specs of the processors. If you’re looking just at playing GW2, I would run the A10 based on the fact that its’ clock rate is higher than the 8120 which is important for large scale battles in GW2. GW2 requires fast single thread performance. However, if you’re just casually playing GW2 and do other things with your PC, I’d grab the 8 core processor and overclock it to get the best performance.

The A10 uses less power than the 8120 by 25 watts, so you’d be more ‘green’ by going with the A10. Also, if your graphics card takes a dump on you and you don’t have a backup, you can use the A10’s built in 7660.

TBH though, I’m sure there are other things to look at besides core count, stock core frequency, and power used.

Edit: I guess you could replace your 6650 with the A10’s 7660 (I also don’t know the numbering scheme for ATI’s/AMD’s graphics cards)

In terms of playing GW2, 4.4Ghz. GW2 requires fast single thread performance. However, if you’re going for a general overclock, 4.0.

DR on Dungeon end rewards (Question)

I found the following thresholds for hitting DR from classic dungeons (aka not FotM).

1) Completing 4 paths of dungeons in 2 hours is the limit. If someone completes a 5th dungeon run within 2 hours, DR will be inflicted.

2) Completing the same path multiple times consecutively will inflict DR (not sure if this still holds, but I know it used to).

3) Completing a path in under 15ish minutes will inflict DR on the following run (not sure if this still holds, but I know it used to).

I bought a Razer Naga specifically for Guild Wars 2. I found that since we can move while casting skills/spells (most skills/spells at least) that I didn’t want to hinder my mobility from either taking my hand off the mouse to use the num pad or take my fingers off wasd to use the numbers on the keyboard. I also tried using 10 keys around wasd/esdf and this wasn’t for me, so having all my skills (1-10) and f3/f4 on the Naga’s 11 and 12 buttons (mapped to – and = on the keyboard). Then, for the other two class specific abilities (f1/f2) are rebound to ‘q’ and ‘e’ for me. This way my fingers don’t really have to move far from my movement keys/mouse.

Advice for an MMO newbie?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

1) It’s the guild’s tag that the person belongs to. Usually its the acronym of the guild’s name. For instance, mine is Guild: Testing Eternity Tag: [TE].

2) Do the personal storyline as you level, it will indicate what level is recommended in the top right corner of the screen in parenthesis. The story rewards you with alright gear and another means of leveling up. It also gives you a break from exploring the world.

3) There is a website that shows what guilds are on what servers but this website contains only guilds that have registered on the website. http://www.gw2guilds.org/

4) Guilds are great ways to find people to do stuff with. They may eventually lead to making new groups of friends. In my GW1 experience I met a lot of people and a special someone who I am really close to now. So if you’re feeling social, I’d find a guild.

5) Best way to learn slang is to ask the person saying it what the expression means. There is no real way other than playing the game and asking around. The one you mentioned is a group of 4 looking for one more person to do the dungeon called ‘Twilight Arbor’ doing the explorable mode instead of story mode.

Sidenote: I run a slightly overclocked EVGA 560ti 448 FTW edition (overclocked from the FTW overclock) and in sPvP and PvE there are only a few instances where the card hovers around 30fps. I just want to run dungeons however, meeting new people is always a plus =D I’m tired of checking LA/{insert dungeon map here} for a group and would rather just ask in guild chat to get a group going. Also, I’m willing to use any voice chat software because it just enhances the dungeon experience.

Does shutting the game off after farming for a particular item for 30min actually reset the DR code and allow one to continue farming for said particular item?

Oh, maybe I interpreted what the wiki page said about the recipes then. In that case…runs off to the Mystic Forge to create those recipes

You get the recipes from the Mystic Forge using:
X Mystic Coins
X Crystals (bought for SP from Miyani in LA next to the Mystic Forge)
X Bottles of Elonian Wine (also bought from Miyani for some gold)
1 chest piece of the armor satchel you wish to get the recipe for

Just a forewarning, I hear there is going to be a patch for these mystic forge recipes to make it less expensive to get these recipes.

also detailed on how the recipes are obtained.

@derry, I know what you mean when you say that you completed all the paths but didn’t get credit for one of them for the achievement. I had the same thing happen to me in TA. I did all the paths with one group, each path right after each other. Then, a while later as I was looking what I needed for more ArenaNet achievement points I had noticed I was 3/4 in completing that line of achievements for TA. The next day I went back and did the spider path again to get 4/4. Not a big problem since I love dungeons, its just a weird bug that I wasn’t sure if other people ran into until now.

Farming and Drop Rate Decrease

in Players Helping Players

So I was just wondering if there is a decrease in drop rate when farming an enemy for X minutes. I need thin leather and have no cash to buy it on the BLTC. Currently I hunt wolves in Gendarren Fields and I’m wondering how long I can do this before I see less than desired drops. Also, if anyone knows of another place to get thin leather, let me know :p

Thanks,

Ilithis

Ilithis Mithilander is the named I have been using for everything since middle school when I started playing Dungeons and Dragons. Since it was my first time playing, my DM asked me how I was enjoying making a character and what not. My reply was something along the lines of “I like this”, but I can’t speak properly sometimes and it came out like i-li-this. Then, Mithilander is a derivation of Mithrandir which I encountered in one of our D&D 3.0 books.

Ever since that campaign, which was the most epic campaign ever, Mithilander is my surname for all my characters while Ilithis is always my main.
