Are you sure you can upgrade the graphics card in that laptop? Most laptops do not allow for upgrades to the GPU because they’re built into the motherboard.

Another option for you is to ditch the Blu-ray drive and toss an SSD in that slot instead. That way you’ll have both a data drive and a main drive for you applications.

All you have to do is open your laptop up and check out the hard drive’s connection and compare that connection to the SSD you plan on buying. If they have the same ports and are generally the same size, you’ll be good to go.

Can't run the game

So you don’t even get a change to hit ‘Play’ or login or patch or anything?

The 9600GT is an awfully old card and not even top of the line for back in its’ hayday. With that said however, its more powerful than the minimum requirement so you should be able to boot up. I would expect too much though when you do boot it up, even at that sub 1080p resolution.

Are you sure your temperatures at idle were low enough to start running the game and not have it overheat when you start the game? If you don’t already have software that monitors the temperatures of your CPU and GPU, I would recommend getting HWMonitor which can be found here:
http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/1.22-setup.exe

Assuming you have already tried the latest Nvidia drivers for your card and that hasn’t done anything, I would toss ArenaNet a support ticket and see what they have to say on the issue if nothing above sends out any red flags.

With my current budget that is all i can put aside for my gaming hobby, from your reply I am guessing that I might not get the highest fps but it will be playable and if need be I do not mind lowering the settings on some aspects.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Correct, with a non overclocked 3770, expect 20-25 FPS in WvW battles.

I assume with a 280M you also have a nice CPU (at least nice for when it came out). However you are running a laptop which begs the question, what are your CPU and GPU temperatures? You might be encountering some overheating that is common with people running laptops, especially if they’re older like your own and haven’t been dusted recently.

If you don’t already have software that checks the temperatures of your CPU and GPU, I would recommend getting HWMonitor which can be found here:

You’ve done your homework I see. You are correct in saying the WvW is the most stressful (computer wise) activity in the game. I’m not sure of your budget, but a 660 will likely get you very close to max settings if not max (minus supersampling) for most content running around 60FPS. Your processor is almost good, its missing a special little letter after it and its the wrong generation. If you want the game to really shine, get the unlocked ‘K’ version of the i7 4770. This allows you to overclock your CPU to the ‘sweet spot’ of 4.5Ghz and get about 30FPS in large WvW battles.

Overall a nice machine, but I would jump on the Haswell train if you are going to go with Intel. Then, I would dump some cash into a nice aftermarket cooler to overclock the 4770K to 4.5Ghz (ish) and get some decent gameplay in WvW. Note you will need to change your motherboard socket to 1150 for Haswell.

I want to help you but I’m not really sure what I just read/looked at. The picture, at a glance, seems fine. I’m not sure what you described as your problem. If its something about the details of the game that you did not change but when you move the character around you can see something going wrong then it might be a driver issue.

Since you just installed a new graphics card, I want you to go ahead and install the latest drivers for that card which can be found here:

Lets see if that fixes your issue.

Interesting, have you tried to see if the order of execution matters at all? Like the problem only occurs if mumble was launched first, then Guild Wars 2?

Normally the overlay is what causes the problems, but turning it off might not fix it all the way. I have seen people say things are fixed if they launch mumble after they launch Guild Wars 2.

How many years then?

If you’re looking for a definitive answer no one can really say what is going to happen more than a year out really. Typically, I wouldn’t give a single GPU a lifespan of more than 2 generations (I do often though since I’m don’t need highest everything). So maybe 3-4 years for the SLI setup and towards the end you might not be able to max everything. Really what you should look at is buying a new card every generation and selling your used on on an enthusiast site if you always want the highest everything forever.

Performance

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Guild Wars 2 is assuredly the most CPU intense game I have played since the days when I tried playing Blur on my C2D.

As nice as 8 cores sounds, your processor is on the first generation of a new architecture AMD is working on and had less than desirable results in terms of single thread performance which is what Guild Wars 2 prefers. Guild Wars 2 has a handful of threads that make up the main part of the game, that when denied the ability to compute, slow the entire game down (loss of FPS). The second generation of your processors are out (the 8320 and 8350) and have made some improvements on the first design, but AMD still lags behind Intel in terms of single thread performance. Hopefully come their third generation things improve again and hopefully toss Intel into second place so Intel can get back to innovation in performance rather than looking at improving their integrated graphics and power consumption. Overclocking that thing is your best bet right now so grabbing a nice cooler is on the right track for getting the most out of what you currently have. I currently use an AIO water cooling unit, the H50 from Corsair. Since this is your first time overclocking, I wouldn’t get too crazy with cooling. Custom water loops are the best, but most expensive and the risk is higher if you don’t properly assemble the unit because you could have water all over your electronics then. Next in terms of performance are top of the line air-coolers and AIO water coolers. Then, everything else really isn’t worth getting if you plan on overclocking :p

People around here recommend the Noctua D14 as one of the better air coolers out there. Personally, I like to have room in my case, so I went with a lower end AIO water cooler. You can get something simple and ancient, like the H50, to the H100i which is Corsair’s top end AIO water cooler. Just make sure the water cooler will fit on your case somewhere. You’ll have to bolt the radiator on somewhere. You can also get an AIO water cooler that isn’t Corsair, I am just a loyal fan.

I can’t speak for the performance of either of those graphics cards, but the card I have is worse than the 660Ti and I play at 1080p with everything set to the highest besides supersampling. Depending where I am at, I can get frames of around 30 around town (CPU bound), and out in the world I get 45+ fps, I do see 60 often.

Well the reason that you might have to restart your entire system to get the problem to reset is because there are two ‘processes’ running. You have the normal gw2.exe and the awesomium.exe which is the trading post. Kill this ladder process without rebooting your PC and just restarting Guild Wars 2 and I’m sure it’ll reset your problem. As for an actual solution, I have nothing for you :/

Where are you encountering these issues of 7FPS? Are you staring at a wall or playing WvW zerg wars?

Lets get a complete system specification rather than just the graphics card.

That graphics card is a media card and never meant to play real video games. On top of being the third worst card in that generation from Nvidia, its also 4 years old. Which in terms of a computer is end of life for gaming usability. Honestly I’m surprised you got 40 on medium settings, but I bet you anything that was while staring at a wall and using a sub 1080p resolution.

4-Cores & 4.2Ghz or 8-Cores & 3.5Ghz?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Hopefully, eventually, the 8-core solution would be better for gaming. However, as it stands, games don’t really use all the cores well and some (especially Guild Wars 2) love raw frequency and single-thread performance. Right now Intel’s processors hold the single-thread performance badge while AMD’s processors generally have higher stock frequencies. I should note though that 1Ghz from Intel != 1Ghz from AMD. Their CPU architectures are vastly different and right now the latest generation is more akin to (numbers be made up, don’t shoot me) Intel 800Mhz == AMD 1Ghz Now if you’re streaming your game, the extra cores will for sure help.

In the advent of the latest generation console systems, hopefully a push will be made to use extra cores when they are present since both the xbone and ps4 will have 8-core systems.

Since you didn’t go into detail about which processors you listed in your OP, I’m going to assume they are either both from AMD or both from Intel, not mixed. If you want to stream your gaming sessions, the 8 core will serve you better even at the lower frequency since you’ll be running two ‘larger’ tasks. However, if you don’t care to stream and just want to play the game, you’ll see the quad core processor excel.

Two things guys…

Firstly, during the sudden power cut the client files probably got corrupted and that is why you need to redownload the game.

Secondly, to avoid redownloading the game in the future, it is advised (especially for people with data caps) to have a backup of the gw2.dat file somewhere else on your system. Once you finish downloading the game, copy the game somewhere else. If/When you encounter a sudden power outage where it breaks the game, you can simply copy your backup over to the game’s original directory and patch up from where you left off.

Its probaly arena net, dont really know. Just as the game came out i could play it perfectly on highest graphics with 100 fps, but then for some reason when i came back 2 month later, i suddenly had the 10-20 fps. God kitten i hate this haha

If your OP was in WvW in a battle with 2 large zergs, those FPS you said were right in line with what you should expect. If its just open world PvE (not large dynamic events) then yes, there is a problem. I would first try installing the latest graphics drivers which can be found here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-64bit-320.18-whql-driver.html

Just a reminder to everyone out there…the minimum specifications are there to let you know what hardware will actually launch the game, having hardware above this minimum does not guarantee you any good performance from the game. Although we expect it, we don’t always get it.

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

I would start by making sure your graphics driver is the latest very. From looking at what you have posted, I’m not sure you are on the latest (not very familiar with AMD). Here is a link to the latest stuff for your card:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_win8-64.aspx

If that doesn’t do anything to help you, lets check and make sure your CPU and GPU temperatures are not on the verge of going critical when you try and launch the game. If you don’t already have software that allows you to monitor the GPU and CPU, then I would recommend getting HWMonitor which can be found here:
http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/1.22-setup.exe

Next lets start deleting some temporary files that have been known to really screw up the game for some strange reason. Inside the directory where you installed the game there will be a file called ‘local.dat’ delete this file, it holds all your graphical settings in GW2 and other such settings. The game will automatically recreate this file when it launches. If the local.dat file isn’t there, then check your ‘My Documents’ folder where there will be a Guild Wars 2 folder, inside this folder or one of its sub-directories will be the local.dat file.

Alright, my next thought is that maybe its the hard drive. I saw you have two hard drives (or maybe one hard drive with 2 partitions). Could you try playing the game from the other hard drive (or partition) and see if that helps?

While you are at it check and make sure the hard drive doesn’t have any disk errors. Run a check disk by right clicking on the hard drive in ‘My Computer’ and click ‘Properties’. A new window pops up, go to the ‘Tools’ tab and click the ‘Check now…’ button to initiate the disk check.

Hopefully something above works, if not I would toss a support ticket to ArenaNet and see what they have to say on the matter.

Just to clarify things here, MB is megabyte and Mb is megabit. 8 megabits fit inside a megabyte, thus allowing marketing to inflate numbers due to lack of consumer knowledge. Assuming you have a 15Mb connection, then the max download speed you can get is stated above at 1.875MB. Getting .74 MB/s download on a wireless device is pretty good assuming there are walls/distance between you and the router. Ok I found a way to work. At least worked for me. Here it goes:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments

Windows via shortcut
You can execute switches directly from your Guild Wars 2 shortcut:
1. Right click on your Guild Wars 2 shortcut and select ‘Properties’.
2. In the ‘Target Area’ field you will see the location of your Guild Wars 2 executable file: …\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe
3. Write the desired command line arguments after the quote marks, each beginning with a space: “…\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -perf -windowed

OR

Windows via start/run
If you don’t plan on using an argument frequently, it can be easier to use the Windows’ Run command for a single invocation.
1. Click the “Start” button
2. Select “Run” (not required for Windows 7)
3. Enter the path to the GW2.exe in quotes followed by the arguments you wish to use (same as above, but in a single line).
4. Press enter.

I don’t understand how telling people how to use command line switches will help? Perhaps you should list the switches they should use. -windowed doesn’t seem like something most people would want.

First, I run my computer with 3 monitors. And I have the game playing on one with graphics turned way up. Generally I run around at 60-70fps. When I turn fraps on it’s preset to 29.97fps.

When I have all that and run into a zerg my fps sometimes dips to 15fps. Would a second video card increase that, or is the issue likely something else? (IE: Processor or Server based?).

I don’t want to go buy a second 680GTX and find out that there is going to be no increase in quality.

Your problem is a CPU bottleneck as people have previously mentioned. Do not buy a second card unless you are a fan of spending money needlessly. I can see the problem if you were playing across all 3 monitors, but since you’re only using 1 to game, you shouldn’t have a problem with a GTX 680.

aound 40-50 degrees but when in games around 60-70

Well there’s a potential problem. Your series of processors don’t really like to go to 70C, 71C being its’ maximum. If I were you, I would make sure to clean your case out from any dust. Check the temperature at that time, then if it still gets toasty like that, it’s time to reapply the thermal paste between the CPU itself and the heat sink attached to it. After that, your temperatures should drop quite a bit.

Any thermal paste will do since between the best and worst is only a handful of degrees C, so if you aren’t in the market for overclocking your CPU, get whatever. Arctic Silver 5 is very common and pretty decent. Currently, I’m using some Timtronics Grey Ice 4200.

As for how to apply thermal paste, YouTube has more than enough instructional videos to follow.

While I really don’t know how to help, I would shoot ArenaNet a support ticket to see what they have to say.

Just some simple basic questions, does your computer meet the minimum specified requirements?

Have you tried to run the game from another hard drive? Some sectors of your hard drive might have gone bad. I would error check your hard drive by going into it’s properties page and go to the ‘Tools’ tab and hit the ‘Check now…’ button to start the error checking of the hard drive.

Hello I am having a problem running guild wars 2 whenever i try to start it up it automatically says Network error. Please check your Internet connection and try again. so i uninstalled gw2 and tried to reinstall and now it says Download failed! Please check your internet connection and try again so i used a VPN to download it and while its downloading I have a feeling that i will have to use the vpn to play the game at all ive tried all the port tests and winsock resets but nothing has worked I have windows 7 with avast antivirus and as far as i know nothing has changed since yesterday morning when i last played can I please get some support on this issue??

First thing is first, you do have internet access right? Like you can get to some random non-cached web page and everything is fine. Assuming yes, and the fact that you have already opened the ports on your router, tossed Guild Wars 2 on Avast’s whitelist, and don’t have a data cap on your internet. You might have to resort to sending a support ticket to ArenaNet.

I would be very surprised if you didn’t run into the same issues you are having now simply by changing programs that Guild Wars 2 runs through. It’s a very demanding game hardware wise for desktops and will be even more so for mobile solutions. I think you’re wasting time by trying, but in the name of Science, go forth and experiment.

If I were you I would just run a nice headset instead of cranking up the volume on the MacBook, and I would also not play on your lap so as to not burn yourself. If anything, grab a laptop cooling pad when you play.

Okay Ive updated my DirectX and i can get past character screen and my temp read from 40-70 degrees and the loading screen takes forever when i press play and when its nearly done it freezes causing me to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and open up task manager and when it becomes un-froze and i open it I get this.

When you say you have updated your DirectX, I’m going to assume that you also installed the latest graphics driver that I linked.

Those temperatures are normal for an Nvidia GPU, especially during the more summery months where room temperatures are a little higher when people like to save on their monthly bills. 70C under load is really good, when you get close to the point of boiling water, like the 90C+ area is when you start to worry.

Out of curiosity, what are your CPU temperatures like?

You do have a graphics card right? I’m going to take a stab in the dark here and guess its an AMD HD 7770. Am I right? There have been a lot of other people with problems lately with this model card for some reason. If the latest drivers haven’t gotta you anywhere, I doubt its a temperature issue, but lets check anyways.

If you don’t already have software that monitors your CPU’s and GPU’s temperatures, then I recommend using HWMonitor which can be found here:

Ok so it finished and is correcting the errors. This still made me less than happy, and makes me question the previous results

I can’t speak for any of the legitness of the tools you are using. Some registry tools might look and play nice initially, but in reality they’re just malware furthering your problem.

Personally, you have an SSD now, reinstall Windows on it. Now would be as good time as ever since you have an SSD and you won’t regret the boot times of Windows after you do when compared to your old hard drive. I was once a firm believer that an SSD was a super luxury item that wasn’t warranted for. I caved and got one when the price was right (like .50cent per GB) and I’ll never go back. I highly recommend one for any machine, even if it just surfs the internet. The new load times were just amazing, especially compared to coming from some ancient IDE hard drive from the early 2000’s (it just never died).

I’ve currently uninstalled the game from both drives and decided a registry scan might be in order, this is the results of said scan. :|

I don’t know what registry nuke is, but after a scan from the first few links of google, it looks legit. Let us know how it goes if that fixes it. If it doesn’t go well it might be time to just reinstall windows.

solved deleting 3 files. Local.dat & arenanet.log in documents/guildwars2 and crash.dmp in install folder

For future reference, it was likely the local.dat file as the culprit. The log file and crash file presumably had nothing to do with the problem, however that local.dat file can be one menacing presence from what I hear sometimes.

Should they try to make a report about crashing in a zone on a particular server (their home server obviously) if that fixes the issue for them?

Doubtful, its such a one-off thing that there was likely some net-code written poorly that resulted in the error which made it so the character couldn’t be “read from the server”. I emphasize the danger quotes because I put in more lay-man’s terms than going into ultra detail on things that I’m speculating on since I don’t know how ArenaNet/NCSoft runs the show.

Basically, I’m guessing that since you guest onto another server, you’re getting a non-contaminated “copy of your character” from your home server and to make sure everything can be “read from your home server” you move to a new map to make sure that everything that was “contaminated” is now back to “normal”. Like I said above, huge guesses here.

If it worked, great. If not, time to contact ArenaNet directly via a support ticket. They actually know their system (hopefully) and for sure can help you out better than me since they probably have tools built specifically to help people in situations like these.

It looks like those timers are still pretty bad. I run the game from an older OCZ Vertex SATAII SSD and it loads up faster than that. Are you running the SSD/HDD on a 6gbps SATA port on your motherboard or a 3mbps SATA port? They’re usually designated in your motherboard manual, they might also have different colors to differentiate between the two. For instance, my 6gbps ports are red while my 3gbps ports are black.

The only thing that i still do not understand, is why GW2 requires both even without much graphic, for example I play battlefield 3 in high quality with 50-60 fps,
but thanks for all your answers!

Two very different engines optimized to do two very different things for two very different games.

Notice the limit they imposed on the 360 version of BF3, 32 man maps last time I recall (which was a year ago) instead of the 64 man games available to the PC. The 360’s CPU just simply couldn’t handle the loads required by that many people in a game.

You can’t really impose a limit in Guild Wars 2 because its an open world, the best ArenaNet could do was cull people away which is why you can only see so many people in PvE during large dynamic events.

Can you also please give fps expectations in PvE and WvW individually

The 710M will likely be slightly better than what people said about the 610MX. The 650M is the best of the bunch you listed. I’d grab that because even with that you’ll be struggling to keep a decent FPS (60ish) with medium-high settings at 720p.

The CPU will be the limiting factor in WvW, its been recommended that you get at least a i7 3630QM for the extra frequency.
