Embarrassingly, I just made exactly the same mistake. In my case, it will cost 2,800 gems and a week to fix it, since I spent to move to a high-pop and I’ll want to return to my full-pop server.

I’ve filed a support ticket. If I get a different answer from the OP, I’ll add it to this post.

So, even when we are aware of how easy it is to make this mistake and try to be careful, it’s still easy to do this. It should be hard to transfer, easier to guest.

Token Wallet! Thank you, ANet. +1

People have been asking for something like this since the beta weekends. Thanks for making it happen.

Regarding the inclusion of gold:
I’ve always made a practice of keeping some gold in the bank and some on characters. It does make it easier to budget, if each character has an allowance and the gold in the bank is used for long-term investments rather than impulse purchases.

But if the game was released originally with the wallet, how many of us would have demanded that ANet introduce a tool to separate coin into piles? It never would have occurred to me, even though, as mentioned above, I’ve always used game banks to do that. We’ll find other ways to reserve money or distinguish savings from checking.

One possible route is to buy stackable items from the TP that sell for vendor + 1c. For example, Crests of the Shaman are available in bulk at 1s99c, so you can buy a stack for 497s 50c and sell for 495s, i.e. this allows you to store nearly 5g for a fee of 2s50, about the cost of waypointing halfway across Tyria. Ideal? no, but it will work.

Weapon Swapping on Thieves

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Since thief skills use initiative instead, what if weapon swapping also cost initiative? Then thieves could decide if it’s worth trading off fewer skills in a rotation to use the second weapon set. It would also prevent thieves from gaining a huge advantage over the other classes, in terms of sigils with on-swap benefits.

No doubt other changes to initiative would also have to be made, in terms of traits, costs, and so on.

Although the updates are 2x/month, the achievements stick around longer. We don’t have to rush.

Further, there are different teams working on “substantive changes” vs event-related content. Some updates, we’ll just see an updated living story. Other updates, we’ll see rebalancing, new mechanics (achievement rewards), dungeon updates, and permanent new content.

I like the new system, but I have found that I need to retrain myself to maintain my slow & steady approach. It’s all too tempting to chase after every new shiny change in the game, instead of taking my time and enjoying all the game has to offer.

It should be easy to guest and really difficult to transfer.

  • The worst impact on a guesting mistake is 24 hours without playing with your friends, chasing world events, or buying obby shards in Orr.
  • The least penalty for a transfer mistake is 168 hours without being able to WvW with your friends, 1,600 gems, and potentially difficulty returning to your original server. The cost is much greater if both servers are high population and/or in different regions from each other.

There should be a separate interface row for the two functions:

  • Guesting row:
    • Select servers to guest to. Only pop up a warning at this step.
    • Once you have selected 1-2 servers, you see a new button to guest to that server (instead of the current interface that requires you to repeat the same steps and see the same confirmation, even though you are locked into your choice for 24 hours). No need for a warning, just post a notification.
  • Transferring Row
    • different color and font
    • pop-up warnings when you click the “transfer” button, before you get the list of worlds
    • pop up a second warning when you choose a server
    • pop up a third warning before completing the transaction, “this will cost _ gems and cannot be reversed; it will cost you _ gems if you want to return and you will have to wait 7 days”

Give Gaile the ticket number from that response. She’ll follow up on why your account was deemed ineligible or whatever other weirdness is going on.

I really don’t understand why Guesting has more confirmation requirements than Transferring. The worst penalty for incorrect guesting is 24 hours without being able to play with your friends, chase world events, or buy obby shards in Orr. The least penalty for a mistake in transferring is hundreds of gems and 168 hours of being locked out of WvW. (And it’s much worse if you accidentally change regions.)

Unique Names For (functional) NPCs

Please start using unique names for NPCs that have an in-game function. There’s no reason for players to have to wonder which NPCs offer food, which offer supply boxes, or which offer basic gear. Managing inventory can be tedious enough without the difficult of figuring out who’s-who.

I hope this is easy to do going forward, since these NPCs offer different goods and use different skins. For existing NPCs that share names, I’m willing to make a list of names, if ANet is willing to update them to something unique.

Example
The Labyrinthe Cliffs includes a dozen vendors with the name, “Merchant [Merchant]” or something extremely similar.

If you don’t want to give these NPCs any personality, at least name them after their function:

  • Vendor [Leather Mats to Supply Boxes]
  • Vendor [Cloth Mats to Supply Boxes]
  • etc

Similarly, the bulk foods vendors could be named:

  • Bulk Foods Vendor [Maguuma Jungle]
  • Bulk Foods Vendor [Ascalon]
  • etc

So it’s an improper strategy to pop turrets, clones, summoned allies, and minions to make it harder for enemies to target you? That is counter-intuitive to me.

I probably should have said that I support your sentiment, just not the way you have identified the problem. In other words, I agree with you that ANet should look closely at challenge-vs-reward. The question is: what should they do about it?

I agree with you that people are tending to grind these chests, which is why I’d like to see all the events become equally challenging. Two minutes is too little effort for a guaranteed rare — plus, if your load screen takes too long to spawn for SB or Maw, you end up in overflow and get nothing; that seems unfair, too.

Re: minimum vs maximum. Yeah, we aren’t really using the term the same way. I tend not to see any rares in the main chests. This past weekend, I think I hit a total of 30 events and didn’t get a single rare or exotic from the boss chest — only from bonus chests or trash mobs.

Getting 14 Achievements
In my opinion, there are 14 achievements that can be done without too much skill:

  • Like Clockwork, Parachute Pilferer, Poor Man’s Kite, Crowd Favorite, Crystal Obsessed, Frequent Sprinter, Pickup Completionist, Ascent to Zephyr Sanctum, Best. Dive. Ever., Diverse Trader, Kookoochoo the Incredulous, Sanctum Sprint, Strangers from the Sky, Voyage to the Bazaar.
  • Don’t dismiss the sprint achievements, because you can get all but two even if you are last each time (plus, you get decent loot for finishing the race).
  • People in my guild that hate jumping puzzles had no trouble with “Best Dive Ever” — you just need someone who can show you where the power ups are. The tricky jumps have a safety net; the rest can be done with the (3) skill or careful stepping.

Two More Achievements
Getting the last two achievements requires some skill, a mesmer, or a group of friendlies.

  • For any of the other kites, guest to a high-pop, friendly server. On Tarnished Coast, I often see mesmers offering portals in map chat.
  • For kites and/or crystals, look for a large guild advertising “public” guild missions. Such guilds have no rep-requirements and often do other group activities, such as going to Obsidian Sanctum to help everyone find the kite.
  • Of the remaining kites, here’s my take on what’s easiest for non-jumpers:
    • Pig Iron Mines: use an engineer: you can use Rifle-5 for almost every tricky jump. Bring a little bit of speed — a helpful cushion. At the end, watch out for the boss who can knock you off the platform. Sneak past using a spy kit, use stability, or try to rifle-5 past.
    • Griffonhook: with -50% falling damage and a speed boost, there aren’t any horrible jumps. The hard part here is finding the path and that’s trickiest at the start, so try to go when there are other people you can follow. Once you get to the clifftop, there’s really only one plausible route to take until you reach the kite (you don’t need to carry the “bomb” -- that’s only needed if you want the chest, which doesn’t have anything special).
    • Kites of the Night: first-timers will require a group and during peak hours, there should be plenty of people around. After an escort quest, you banish foes using environmental torch skills, find some keys, and enter a dark room that requires some jumping. However, the kite is located conveniently in the spot that requires the least jumping skill. Walk (slowly) straight, throw a torch to see where you need to jump — plenty of room to over-step.

Good luck

Safely removing Legendary recipes

in Suggestions

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

If I understand the idea, the OP wants to preserve the “specialness” of the existing legendaries, as ANet adds new legendaries and new methods of finding precursors.

I applaud the sentiment, but I think market forces will take care of that in the long run. If obtaining the new crop of legendaries/precursors is indeed less random, people will focus on those weapons and pay less attention to the old ones. The demand for the old precursors will drop, as people decide to refocus their efforts. That will mean a reduction in the creation of old school legends.

In addition, through natural attrition, many of those with old school legends will stop playing or start showing off other skins. The result will be that the older legends will be seen less often, even if ANet does nothing about the recipes. I think that makes them exclusive enough.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I disagree with your problem statement. You are able to gain a maximum of 22 rares in this way, which requires you to participate in each and every one of these events. That still makes rares much less common than masterwork.

I agree with you that some of the events are over too quickly. I think that’s a bad thing because it both makes it too easy to get the bonus chest and, more importantly to me, it turns previously epic events into “blink and you miss it” snoozefests. During BETA, zergs of L15 players routinely wiped against the Shadow Behemoth; in today’s meta, Queensdale is often in overflow as soon kitten’s window opens and the fight never lasts more than 1-2 minutes.

I’d like to see ANet make the events more challenging through whatever tools they have available (change the mechanics, increase the health/power of “adds,” require more coordination, nerf L80 toons in full exotics more, …). If the Fire Elemental in Metrica took as long to defeat as Jormag’s Claw, people would have to earn their rare rather than just showing up.

Jumping Puzzles and Mesmer portals

In other words, I don’t see mesmer portaling as different in any way from all the creative ways in which players tackle PvE content in general.

Do you honestly see no difference in any way between a skill that makes it easier to make it through a jumping puzzle (swiftness, stbility, mesmer portal as your own “safety net” for a tricky jump, falling damage reduction) and a skill that makes it so someone does not do the jumping puzzle?

That’s like comparing handing out drinks to marathon runners and cheering for them, to giving someone a free pass to take a taxi and then stand in the finish line. I don’t think you get a participation badge for the latter…

I guess you’ve never participated in San Francisco’s Bay to Breaker’s race, in which people do hand out drinks to runners and cheer for them. Some people ride part way, some people dance naked in costume. Some people carry other people, some wheel others in shopping carts. If you can think of it, I’m sure someone has done it.

It’s all in good fun. And yes, people who cross the finish line get a t-shirt or something, but no one much cares how they got there.

JPs in GW2 aren’t marathons, except for the SAB.

And yes, by the way, I don’t see any difference between a mesmer using a portal to help people and a ranger using a perma speed boost signet to help themself, but not help anyone else. Both are using skills working as intended by the developers.

In any case, you’re welcome to view the game as you like. I’m explaining why I’m not bothered that I’ve done all the JPs on my own at some point, but others have hopped on a mesmer portal. I know what I’ve accomplished; they know what they’ve accomplished.

I think Da Sonic’s probably ID’d the root cause (accidentally toggling run to off).

In addition, movement speed in combat is reduced substantially and you remain in “combat mode” until you break aggro from all foes and all conditions and effects have expired. In Orr, there are a lot of areas that have semi-permanent environmental effects — you have to get far enough away from any corrupted statues and then wait for the effect to wear off.

Jumping Puzzles and Mesmer portals

in Suggestions

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

If people think mesmer portaling is inappropriate, how about all of the other skills & traits that make JPs easier?

  • 50% reduction in falling damage.
  • +10-25% movement speed for some professions via signets or traits.
  • stability, aegis or other blocks to prevent getting knocked down by environmental effects or foes
  • stealth to get past difficult foes
  • shadowstepping to move faster or teleporting to cross otherwise difficult gaps

In other words, I don’t see mesmer portaling as different in any way from all the creative ways in which players tackle PvE content in general.

For those who want a “pure” jumping puzzle, there’s SAB — by popular demand, a recurring special event feature. Everyone reduced to the same abilities and size.

Finally, if mesmers aren’t supposed to portal people for JPs, just what do you think the skill’s intended use is, for PvE? Every case I can think of is helping people who can’t “jump” get through more quickly: CoF/1 boulders, Asura Fractal stairway, Dredge Fractal gating, and so on. Of course, this isn’t really an argument against ANet revisiting the idea of nerfing yet another mesmer tool — I just mean to suggest that I believe that ANet originally expected people to portal people through JPs.

Although I don’t think it matters for the above, I’ve done nearly all the JPs in PvE on my own. For Not So Secret, I got to the main chest on my own, but got lost getting to the goggles (poor sense of 3D spatial relations while viewing in 2D). I got a several ports there (while figuring out by trial & error what I was supposed to do) and then came back later on my own.

Do Sky Pirates not spawn anymore?

in Sky Pirates of Tyria

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The spawns haven’t been nerfed. What happens is that there’s a 50|50 chance that any given holo site will be Aetherblades. People decide to run past them if they are Dragon Minions, meaning that, over time, nearly all the holos will be dragon minions.

In an extreme hypothetical (with all the math working out neatly):

  1. Initial spawn after reset: 50 holos are Aetherblades (AB) and 50 are Dragon Minions (DM).
  2. Players kill the ABs, but leave the DMs and those 50 holos reset into half of each. New total: 75 DM, 25 AB.
  3. Again, players go after the ABs, ignoring the DMs: new total 87 DM, 13 AB.
  4. Repeat: 93 DM, 7 AB.

And so on, which gives the appearance that the pirates were nerfed out. (And yes, I’ve tested this “theory” in several zones — activating the holos and returning, the new set is about 50% likely to be AB foes.)

Instead, what people should do is to activate every DM holo they pass, even if they are on their way some place else. Since the DMs are invulnerable for 1-2s, after you pick yourself up, you can run away without aggro. Even if the DMs aren’t killed, the holo will reset.

Plus, it can be fun to see the ABs spawn in the middle of a group of DMs.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I support ANet’s decision not to interfere with guild promotions. I don’t like the automatic GW1 system and I don’t want to see something like that here.

A number of people have suggested a good solution, which is that guilds should always find at least one back up (and more, for the largest guilds). It’s not only technically advantageous for situations like this, but it’s also good practice for the long-term survival of any social organization.

Instead of mandating a succession process, what ANet could do is to make it easier for guilds to realize this is important. For example:

  • Adding a note in the rank tab, if the guild doesn’t have a backup for the top position (either at the same rank or with a second rank with the “promotion” rights).
  • Adding a default rank for “Assistant Guild Leader” or something like that.

Create an Account Item Search function that would allow players to search for items across in their account. It would work similar to the current inventory and bank searches: you can type part of the name or part of the description. Unlike the existing feature, it would display results in a modal pop-up panel showing matches and locations, e.g. “rare” would show gold items on all characters or in the bank.

This has several benefits for players, but should prove even more helpful for the Support Team.

Background
Players frequently collect items from the gem shop or a special event and don’t remember doing so. This results in multiple tickets and forum posts, complaining that the gem shop ate their gems or an event is bugged. Players are annoyed and Support has to respond to each individual request with the same suggestions: delete emails, double-check your bank, and triple check all your characters.

Instead of everyone being frustrated, put the tools in the hands of the players to locate items within their account.

This still won’t address players that accidentally delete items or characters holding the items (despite the warning messages), but it should reduce the number of tickets substantially.

This also benefits characters that use mules to store items.

I’m okay with the current level of difficulty. With the exception of Grenth, I haven’t found any of the events too hard or too broken to complete with a small handful of players, of any ability level, as long as everyone coordinates a little bit. IMO, Grenth is mostly difficult because too many people trying to find a place to heal drag foes straight to Jonez. Otherwise, it’s just a really tricky fight.

For the OP: the devs ask for us to be specific when reporting bugs or offering suggestions. So perhaps you can name the events that you believe are completely stuck, along with when and which server. For those that are too hard, maybe create a separate post in the suggestions forum — you don’t have to offer a solution, as long as you describe why you find the event too difficult.

Auto targeting is a TERRIBLE thing

Like most things in GW2, its utility is situational. Auto-target is great in a newbie zone if you’re L80 working on 40-50 kills for the daily. It’s great for ensuring that you are always attacking the boss (e.g. Claw of Jormag) when you have trouble locating the target, e.g. due to skill lag, mouse lag, or whatever. I also like it in Twilight Arbor to use against the blooming thistles.

Still, I agree that most of the time, it’s more effective (and fun) to select my own targets.

I know that everyone else knows that Anet in their divine wisdom has gone and nerfed all the T6 mat drops all to nothing .

There’s no evidence of this. The demand for T6 mats is very high and the drop rates have always been low. A lot of people have started to realize you don’t have to farm mats, but can farm gold instead — that tends to reduce the supply of mats and increase their price. Similarly, a lot more people can now afford to forge or craft things requiring T6 mats which is affecting the demand, again putting pressure to increase prices.

Anet doesnt want you to get more, they want you to get less, so that you have to buy gems to turn into gold.

There’s no evidence of that. If anything, they have added more ways to make or save money: the southsun zergs, the guaranteed loot from champs, the bonus chests once/character for the fire elemental (one minute fight), and so on.

The problem with simple farms is that they are targets for bots and bots are substantially more efficient than humans.

The vendor was available for a while after SAB closed. Then, as announced several times, he closed up shop.

As WaxWorm says, he’s expected to return, so save your baubles.

In the meantime, some of the skins have dropped in price on the TP.

Great idea. There are a lot of guilds that do this, but it’s not always easy for people to find them. Until now

Thanks, Stephane, for making this a stickie.

As a subscription-funded game, WoW can afford a lot more personal attention for just about anything. Are we as players willing to pay more to play GW2 so we can have personal item restoration?

Here’s what ANet would need to be able to do:

  • Create a tool to review transactions: vendor, trading post, salvages, email.
  • Also enable the tool to locate a specific item on an account at a moment in time and track that item’s current location.
  • Create another tool that makes it possible to restore an individual item.
  • Make the above tools foolproof, so that low-wage, non-technical staff can’t misinterpret the data.
  • Make the above tools secure, so that it’s difficult/impossible for low-wage staff to “gift” stuff to friends.
  • Create an audit trail for all of the above, so that management can track whether the tools are being used by the right people and whether the tools are properly used.
  • Higher additional staff to use the tools, investigate claims (including all the bogus ones we know that there will be), and to manage/review/audit the systems.

I would love to see features like individual-item restoration for all sorts of reasons, but I far prefer the current system which is a game without a subscription fee and where I don’t have to buy gems to get max-stat items.

Flame & Frost is the story that explains how the original permanent content evolves into the new permanent content. By its very nature, it has to be temporary.

Whether one realizes it or not, this is generally good for all of us because it gives ANet a chance to do a lot of experimentation, without forcing us to accept every idea they have. We give feedback, they tweak, and the game is better for it.

If you have time to play through it, great — you got to enjoy some of the transition. If not, well, you’re in the same boat as someone who buys the game in June — you’ll have missed out on some stuff, but still get to enjoy the best the game has to offer.

I’m sorry that some of us won’t be able to see everything the game has to offer, but I really don’t see how ANet can tell an evolving story without time-limiting some of the content.

Make sure you clear out your mailbox. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, contact support directly (they need a ticket number to check your individual account).

Mobs reset

Specifically, the Drake Broodmother in Southsun does this. Although her patrol route will take her far from the cave entrance, if she breaks aggro and walks to the cave, she will start regenerating health before she gets there. Today, we had her down to 10-20% health when she decided to check if the stove was still on (it wasn’t). Her health reset, but of course, ours did not.

If the game is going to let hostile NPCs break aggro and restore health, then the player characters should also be considered out of combat at that point, allowing us to change skills, swap weapons, and also to regenerate or own health.

Free server change

It costs the same in EU and NA to move to popular servers. The different between the regions is that EU sometimes includes less popular worlds and the entire point of the current system is to make it easier for people to move from a high-pop to a low-pop home.

The reason for the high gem cost is to discourage people from moving — it costs ANet maintenance time/effort to support a transfer system. A free monthly transfer arrangement would have the opposite impact.

I would like it to be cheaper to change servers: I have friends in other worlds across regions; if it were easy, I would probably transfer frequently. But I understand why the current system exists and I respect it.

Ultimately, it won’t matter which reporting drop-down you use — the team investigates and will re-assigned it if needed.

You can also file a ticket, that way you can include other identifying details, such as locations, behavior, and so on:
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/ask

You should report all cases of suspected botting: the more people who report, the easier it is for ANet to identify them, spot patterns, and improve how they deal with bots. Sometimes ANet will let an account bot for a while to (a) observe the behavior and (b) obscure the detection method used to spot them.
