It’s not guaranteed that you will get a rare item. I think John Smith said, “almost always.” So you might be just getting horribly unlucky.

Or, your character might be too low level — the loot will normally be character level so the lowest tiers will yield greens instead.

For guesting to work as intended, it has to be just as smooth as playing from your home world. Applying restrictions to guests or guesting is undermining the purpose of the system.

And why are we blaming guesting for this issue? When guesting was introduced, there were no problems with getting into “proper” zones instead of overflows (except in LA, which has always been overcrowded).

The real issue is that it’s just too easy to get great loot by spending 5-10 minutes ikittenone and moving on to another zone. Reduce the rewards, limit the total number of chests available by character or account, or (gasp) apply diminishing returns. All of these would lower the demand for certain zones and reduce the chance that overflow gets triggered.

You might consider updating your credentials. One scenario is that someone has access to your account and is only removing small amounts of stuff, assuming that you won’t notice for a while. I hope that isn’t the case, but it’s simple to address it by updating passwords and ensuring no one else can start up your game.

I just spent 1s62 to travel to Vigil HQ and chat with the guard. (For Science, money is no object.) No trouble getting into the Asura gate area. (Had a bit of trouble finding it — forgot it had a separate entrance from the HQ instance.)

So, here are things to check:

  • Ensure that you actually finished the Battle of Fort Trinity (I’m sure that’s true, but it’s easy to check.)
  • Ensure that you joined the Vigil — you can only use your order’s Asura gate (ok, that’s ridiculous lore-wise and only vaguely reasonable balance-wise, but it’s how the game is designed).

If you’ve confirmed you’re a vigil member in good standing and the Fort Trinity asura gates aren’t, erm, blocked by [insert spoilers here], then you’ll have to contact support to start some account-specific troubleshooting.

Are folks suggesting that, if I want to play with friends, I can’t get the same opportunities for loot? That sounds unfair.

If the goal is reduced overflow, ANet can:

  • Reduce world-event pinata level loot to January levels.
  • Limit the total number of such chests lootable per character, regardless of server (e.g. 6 chests per toon every 24 hours).
  • Limit the total number of such chests lootable per account (e.g. 12 chests per player).
  • Limit all rewards based on zone, e.g. you can only mine 2 ori nodes in Frostgorge regardless of guesting: both on home server, both on guest server(s), or one each. The same would apply to chests: one Claw of Jormag chest regardless of how many servers you guest to.

Finally, as of yet, there’s no specific evidence that your server is getting more guests at these events than any other server. It’s a plausible theory and I don’t have any trouble believing it could be true, but I don’t see any proof that is true.

I just did this two times with two different groups without any serious trouble.

Not every foe in the game can be consistently interrupted, even to prevent them from casting a horrible spell. I recommend that players don’t rely on just one tactic to win tough battles — in this game, it will lead to seemingly impossible fights, while a change in strategy might make the group nearly trivial to deal with.

In the case of the final boss, there are a couple of ways to deal with her. First, she begins either invulnerable or close enough that it doesn’t make sense to focus on her. Eventually, she starts taking damage like her allies.

This is one fight that is much easier with even one other person. If you’re solo, you can choose to retreat a distance and pull her allies away, deal with them a few at a time, and then go back to deal with her. Another idea is to ball up the boss with the adds and deal aoe damage. Depending on your profession, you can also use debuffs like blind or conditions.

Good luck.

It sounds like you just got lucky, getting ori ore several times in a row (that’s happened to me salvaging whites I found from foes). The quest markers send you to your order HQ because that is often the shortest distance to the straits of devastation. By the time you reach that part of the storyline, you’ve won the Battle of Fort Trinity and opened the asura gates between order HQ and the fort.

Depending on where you are in Tyria, there tend to be fewer walking steps if you choose that route. Of course, that doesn’t make it the quickest path. And since it’s the first quest after the gates are open, it’s usually not obvious to players. (It wasn’t until I went through the story line with a friend in a different order that I realized it.)

So, I would argue it’s not a bug: the game is working as intended. However, it could be greatly improved by a note in the story instructions, along the lines of, “you can now travel via asura gate to Orr, …”

Overflow isn’t a bug — the game is designed to make sure we can play even if there’s no room in zone for more players. If you arrive in the zone well ahead of the world event, you won’t be in overflow. If you stay in overflow, there’s a decent chance there will be enough people for the event when it occurs there.

The only time we miss out is if we are chasing events based on the presumed time they start.

You want lesser overflow? Encourage ANet to limit the number of times we can open the world-event pinatas. Or ANet could reset the rewards to what they were in January.

What are you saying, that the 25% and 50% listed on masters kits and BLS kits don’t directly translate to ectos?

He’s saying he won’t release the game data for the actual rates.

If you google, you can find results from people who have salvaged 100s or even 1,000s of rares and see their analyses. Their informed-speculation is the ecto-drop rate is different from the “chance to get rarer materials,” i.e. that the 25%|50% applies to getting ori instead of mithril, gossamer instead of silk.

This is getting out of hand. The last 3 dragon events I tried to take part in all sent me to overflow. This hasnt happened since launch or in LA.

People asked for ways to get people out of LA and into more of the zones. Now, ANet has done just that…and we seem to be asking ANet to send us back to LA.

As long as the game rewards us big for 5-8 minutes effort and limits it to once per event (per character), people are going to chase those specific events and try to get into those zones just before an event takes off.

ANet can reduce the number of times we can loot, reduce the loot to what it was before, or put a minimum time investment before dropping better loot. What they can’t do is guarantee we won’t hit overflow if we show up at the last minute.

What's your opinion of the listing fee?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I think the listing fee is great, if perhaps too low.

There are multiple reasons why the listing fee makes sense for the game.

  • It’s a gold sink and virtual economies need many such sinks, to slow down the inevitable inflation.
  • It prevents people from using the TP as part of their storage system.
  • It forces people to ask more reasonable prices: ask too high, you waste your listing fee.
  • It reduces the ability of market “players” to control the market for very long and it reduces the profit from flipping (buy low and quickly sell for 25% or more).
  • It makes it too expensive to keep undercutting the competition for the same item.

These reasons don’t necessarily apply to every player or every situation: some people are still going to ask too much, flip, relist, or undercut — the listing fee just increases the cost of doing these things without considering the risks more carefully.

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

The event repeats constantly throughout the day. If you were in Queensdale before the event begins, you would be moved to non-overflow and could participate in the event. I don’t see that there’s an issue except for people that want to jump in the zone just for the one event.

The new loot attracts all sorts of people who didn’t used to visit Queensdale, including those from your home world. Some of them are also guesting to other worlds. It’s not clear whether guesting makes this worse or better, except we know that the problem started after the chest-loot change; it did not happen immediately after guesting was introduced.

in Suggestions

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

This would probably be happening with or without guesting. Before the better loot on chests from world events, LA was normally full during peak periods: 1-2 overflows or more. Now, I am more likely to end up in LA without overflow — all of those people went somewhere and I speculate that they are chasing events and some are guesting to other servers.

In other words, the symptom is that some people are having trouble participating in world-events that have the improved chest loot. We don’t know the cause.

Tips on how to use the Trading Post

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There are different levels of money making available to people by using the TP. I think Penguin has offered tips useful for one of those levels, but not necessarily applicable to everyone at all times. Here’s how I would put it:

  1. Use the trading post. Amazingly, not everyone sells valuable items on the TP or uses the TP to collect the massive amounts of materials needed for crafting.
  2. Use waypoints. Early on, we get used to walking, but eventually it makes more economic sense to use WPs: if you get to Frostgorge in 30s instead of 300, you can kill that many more foes or harvest one more ori node.
  3. Stop selling to the highest WTB, stop buying from the lowest WTS. Now that you are using the TP, you can save/earn by waiting rather than immediately fulfilling an offer.
  4. Follow the OP’s advice: under- and over-cut those prices by 1c. For the reasons Penguin offered.
  5. Research the market. For high-volume or high-ticket items, spend a few minutes looking at supply/demand, price trends, and/or this forum. You can find great deals or discover that the highest WTB is not the typical offer price or the lowest WTS is not nearly the amount most people are getting.

And, of course, the people making big gold on the TP take things farther: creating spreadsheets to help them identify opportunities, flipping, buying bags, buying cheap items to use in the mystic forge, and so on.

Many of these things are easy for some people, hard for others, and boring for a lot of people. In the end, it’s not just about economic efficiency — making the most money in the shortest time — it’s also about maximizing the amount of fun you have in the time available. If you can afford the stuff you need and save for some of the things you want, then you don’t need to do more than use the TP in the most convenient way. But if you want to invest in luxury items (e.g. minis) or build a legendary, then it might be more fun for you to learn how to farm the TP instead of just farming mats and foes.

How can I tell if it will never sell ?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

As Behellagh suggested, you want to look at trends. If in the last month, the WTS & WTB prices are going down, supply is increasing, and demand is decreasing, then you can be reasonably sure that people aren’t going to want to pay what you are asking.

It only gets complicated when the trends are inconsistent: supply going up, but so is demand. Then you can choose to research the market to find out why that’s happening, take a guess, or flip a coin.

As others have said, if you don’t badly need the gold, leave it there — it can’t hurt to leave stuff for sale for longer.

Buying commander with Badges of honor

in Suggestions

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

In theory, the Commander icon is used to lead groups of people. In practice, you don’t have to be good at leading to get one, you just have to be rich (or know how to collect spare change).

Collecting Badges of Honor doesn’t require anyone to be good at leading either — anyone sitting a top the right siege weapon during a zerg-vs-zerg is going to have plenty of those. Using influence isn’t much better: a poorly led guild that is big enough has so much excess influence right now that I doubt even upcoming features will make much of a dent.

Further, as pointed out by Ahmrill and others, there are reasons that groups might want PvE commanders.

So, instead, I’d like to see the game reward people who lead differently from those who follow. Instead of material rewards, I’d like to see leaders be able to earn tools that make it easier to lead progressively larger groups in progressively more complex tasks.

I’m not sure what those tools would look like or what the requirements would be, but I am sure that we won’t notice the difference if all ANet does is change the requirements from a lot of Currency A to a lot of Currency B.

I don’t support the idea. Let’s wait to see what the market does. Typically, when people learn that Material A is high demand and low supply and prices are trending upward, they will unload their stock. If that isn’t enough to lower prices, then people will tend head to mid-level areas to farm these items for profit.

The initial post makes the assumption that mid-tier mats are “outrageously expensive,” but doesn’t support that contention. What is too expensive? Perhaps T2-4 mats were outrageously in expensive in 2012 and they are finally reaching an appropriate equilibrium, for a variety of reasons.

O.K., Arenanet is hyping the February patch by putting a sale on bag slots and bank tabs. Awesome. Only one problem – the conversion cost for gold to gems just skyrocketed. Now you’ve just kitten off a lot of players who want/need gems for other things and the people who would take advantage of the sale get screwed because their “savings” are eaten up by the gouging in currency transfer.

Could you not have frozen the conversion cost before the change? Sheesh! Only Arenanet could screw up a free lunch!!!

Thanks, but no thanks, Arenanet.

The promotion is not about reducing “gold for bank slots” — it’s about reducing gems for slots. Make a habit of setting aside some money for gems regularly:

  • It will allow you to take advantage of sales like this, without losing out to higher demand for coin-bought-gems.
  • It will allow you to purchase luxury items at less than market value.
  • As a hedge against the inevitable inflation in other parts of the game. Gems should track pretty well, on a month-to-month basis.

Guild Missions [merged]

Illconceived Was Na.9781

My guild is successful as a small organizaition, but only has 20-30 actives. Only a few people play WvW regularly, so we have never spent on the Art of War influence track. I am a minor member of another guild with 80+ actives; they don’t WvW either, but they have so much influence that they bought all the WvW upgrades anyhow — after all, what else would they spend the influence on?

That means that larger guild can start running Guild Missions this month, but my guild won’t be able to.

Had we known even 4 week ago that Guild Missions would depend on Art of War, we could have started spending less influence on minor advantages and invested in the WvW upgrade track.

The larger guild also has more people with disposable (guild) income, because there are plenty who run dungeons regularly. My guild has very few people with more than a few gold, so it’s impractical to ask them to forgo rare weapons or armor in order to contribute to buying influence.

If it was ANet’s intention to release Guild Missions only for the largest guilds, then the current plan has succeeded. If their goal was to offer something to successful guilds of any size, then they have not.

Obviously, the game needs some sort of substantial “gate” to prevent someone with a personal storage guild from initiating guild events, but perhaps there need to be a few options for guilds with fewer than 40 actives.

In my opinion, people aren’t used to the new requirements. It doesn’t take any longer to get dailies now than it did before. You still need to come out of FotM or other dungeons to get variety, but you don’t for Rez or Dodge.

Once people realize that there are easier ways to get Rez than luring foes to kill NPCs (and hoping other players don’t kill the foes first or heal the NPCs too quickly), people will be more comfortable.

People will also begin to realize that there are (or will be) all sorts of ways to get ascended items.

I do the dailies because I enjoy it; if it starts feeling like a chore, I’ll stop. With the exception of higher levels of FotM, there’s nothing in the game that requires me to have ascended gear, so I don’t feel any need to “grind” for them.

The design in the game was to replace the traditional trinity of DPS/Tank/Heal that requires certain profs to fulfill certain roles into a dynamic trinity of DPS/Support/Control that isn’t so prof-dependent. Largely, that’s been true. While the most efficient runs have a meta the requires certain combinations of classes, anyone can go quickly through dungeons with any group, as long as the players are skilled and appropriately spec’d.

I don’t feel compelled to swap gear and builds all the time: stuff that works in dungeons works in PvE and (mostly) in WvW. If I wanted to run the most optimized possible, well, sure, I’d have multiple sets. But that’s the point: I don’t have to be the best in the game in order to PUG; I just need to be skilled.

That said, I agree that it should be easier to swap traits, swap gear (especially upgrades), and generally switch from e.g. support guardian to damage. But for now, I’m pretty happy with the setup.

Increase XP rate for alts after one 80

I just spend coin to level alts. I use consumables to increase the XP-gain (and if I really wanted, I would buy XP boosters from the gem shop).

In short, I think it’s already possible in-game to increase the XP-rate for alts.

Exotic Dyes

I don’t know what an exotic dye would do, but I think it’s a very interesting concept. Maybe it’s streaks of color, particle effects, blends, shimmers, or something that varies with the material of the armor (looks matte on leather, but shiny on metals).

I am sure that the GW2 artists would come up with something very cool.

Good idea.

Person-to-Person Trading System

There are several reasons why GW2 should not have peer to peer trading:

  • It hurts the global market, by creating a gray market that doesn’t have to follow supply & demand as closely.
  • It allows people with more information to exploit individuals with less information.
  • It enables a variety of scams, besides the ones that CoD would resolve.

And it isn’t necessary: in GW1, my closest friends were people I met trading. In GW2, my closest non-guild friends are people I met discussing trades. I know many who make a good income from off-market trades and, because they do it so often, neither they nor their customers have to worry (much) about not receiving their goods.

I admit it would be fun to bargain in-game (in character or not), but it won’t benefit the vast majority of players. And most of the financial benefits it extends to the minority would come at the expense of others.

Scaling level are awsome.

I just went through Plains of Ascalon on an L36 toon and got mostly at-level items. Even on L80, though, all the salvage material will be scaled to the level of the zone.

Also, it’s a lot less annoying to buy items in bulk on the TP than it is to go out an farm them multiple times. At least for me, it’s far easier to earn coin and buy the things I want.

Accordingly, I don’t think there’s much of an issue.

The “bug” could be the tooltip or the duration of the cooldown. If the wiki says its cooldown is currently 5s, then you should decide if that is a deal breaker for you or not. You should be able to salvage and sell it, recovering most of your original investment.

Forced password change [merged]

… I decided to swap the passwords for the two accounts…

….

So, I generated a new password, intending to just use the same password for both accounts.

This is exactly what you should not do: use the same password for multiple accounts. This is exactly why ANet is forcing everyone to change passwords at least once.

  • Use an easily remembered password, but include at least one number, one upper case, one lower case, and one symbol.
  • Longer is better (all other things equal).
  • Use a unique combination for every site, so that if one site is compromised, you will protect the others.

This won’t make it impossible to brute-force your password (there are better ways to do that), but it will make it much more difficult for people to guess or get in knowing your credentials elsewhere. And you can still use an easy-to-remember set of words.

As has been reported in several other threads, if your computer’s internal clock is off, the displayed requirements might not match the actual ones.

  • Change your system clock to match with the current time (or better: synchronize it). Double check that you have the correct time zone.
  • Restart the game.

Good luck.

Stop Camera Movement After Death

If the character dies, the camera starts to move on its own after a few seconds.

If the player takes control of the camera, that spin stops. Entirely.

+1. Works for me: simple, intuitive, little effort.
