I just make a habit of grabbing a spidey-web-gizmo whenever I pass, dropping for combat (if needed) and using it to move around faster (up to random thing to glide, up to specific thing to harvest, etc).

Once you embrace the idea of always using it, I think you’ll find you have access to a lot more oakheart essences than you think and to a lot more nodes than you think.

I haven’t done any “farming” — just map completion on a couple of toons, and I already have more than I’m likely to spend outside the ascended stuff.

I really don’t think it takes more than 30 or 40 achievement points for very many players to find that they don’t enjoy Hot.

It doesn’t take more than 5 seconds for some people to make up their mind all sorts of things. Not sure why that matters.

Some people hated HoT initially and never get it another chance, despite all the changes made. Some people never got that into it. Some people just couldn’t get behind how few things they expected were in the expansion, so it didn’t matter if they liked them or not.

Of course lots of people like or loved it and still play.

Can’t you gift someone money?
Every year, some economist makes the news by “investigating” the value people place on ‘gifts’ versus cash. And every year, the media is “shocked, simply shocked” that people don’t value the gifts as much as cash — they estimate the monetary value of the gift to be less than the cost to the person offering the gift (on average, over 1000s of folks).

But the economist ignores the fact that there’s an important intangible that comes with a gift, which is that the gift-giver has cared enough to give some thought to what the received might want.

Speaking for myself, my favorite gifts (to receive and consequently to give) are things that the received wants, but would never spend money on — those are inherently less “valuable” in dollar (or euro) amounts and of much greater value in terms of friendship and how much they are enjoyed.

tl;dr the point isn’t that ANet is gifting us this thing or that currency. The point is that they stopped to think about veterans and tried to offer something that we might enjoy.

Character slots are a good option, because a lot of people would never buy them, but we can almost always use them for storage if nothing else.

Will we ever going to see Gear Progression?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There is nothing to do in the game anymore.

Time to move on then.

I don’t mean that to dismiss your interest in gear progress — I think it’s a perfectly valid way to enjoy a game; it’s just not something supported in this game. On the contrary, the developers have gone out of their way to ensure that there’s only one tier of max gear that never changes (and that near-max gear is really quite nearly max).

You can, if you want, progress your gear further with plus-stat infusions and keep a variety of prefixes/upgrades for covering various situations. However, that’s pretty limited, too — it’s mostly once & forget, until there’s a major change to the game.

Consequently, this game is missing a key feature that is critically important to your enjoyment. That’s why it’s probably worth your time to find a different game.

tl;dr nothing wrong with wanting gear progression, but neither is there anything wrong with ANet saying it won’t happen in this game.

Capped magic find what to do with luck now?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I think they may have underestimated the time it takes to get 300 luck.

It’s a problem inflicted mostly on people who actively sought to max their MF.

Not true anymore. I didn’t go out of my way to update my luck, but I’m about to hit the cap.

  • Have bought ecto to salvage into dust (when that was a cheaper route than buying it directly)
  • Bought all sorts of greens and blues to see if that was a cheaper way to get reclaimed plates, leather, cloth, etc

While those aren’t entirely common activities, they are well outside the scope of “actively pursuing max MF”

In addition, the newish “salvage all” feature encourages people to salvage before checking TP prices, accelerating the production of luck somewhat.

tl;dr regardless of what ANet once thought, more and more people are hitting the cap. ANet should address this (even if it’s to say that we should just delete luck).

There are a couple of niche uses for luck:

  • Guild Halls need it at various stages, so you could sell (or volunteer) your luck to those in need. (Requires a free guild slot.)
  • A tiny number of mystic forge recipes use luck.

I agree with Djinn that I want ANet to provide a useful sink.
(I don’t agree that it’s bad for the game that some things have no value; it’s annoying, which is a good enough reason to change it.)

[Suggestion] Hungry Cats Achievement

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I agree with the devs that I don’t want a million cats in my Home Instance. But I think your idea is a good one. You also should be able to change your mind and come back to the cat and take it home.

The OP’s idea makes sense and I agree with Djinn’s embellishment of the idea. Or alternatively, we could have an NPC in the home instance that toggles on|of what we see in our home instance, e.g.

  • Hide cats: yes|no
  • Hide personal story NPCs: yes|no
  • Hide living world NPCs: yes|no

That said, I’d rather that ANet add different achievements to the game. I think this is probably a lot more work than it sounds and I’d prefer to see more new stuff rather than attaching achievements to existing things.

I prefer a game that has a good selection of things that people can do that aren’t tied to tangible rewards or achievements. We don’t need a carrot for everything.

Make a unique teleport scroll

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

A solution if you only plan to go to the zone with a single character but if you are an altoholic and can be in the new zone with any of them on a given day. Well, unless you particularly like grinding the initial instance over a dozen times ….

But as soon as all of your alts visited the zone once, they don’t need a scroll anymore because they can use a waypoint, so just rotate it through them and then bank it.

WHAT?? And waste a couple of silver pieces each time?? Are you mad??? xD

Joking aside, I don’t move my toons around much, so I’m not even worried about the waypoint costs. The only reason I’d even consider purchasing teleport scrolls is to gain access to new maps without doing the story (a type of gating that I’m against in principle).

Legendary armor obtainable without raids?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

tl;dr

  • Legendary armor isn’t currently obtainable outside raids (fact).
  • ANet has no plans for other sets or for making the current set available (fact).
  • If they change their mind, it will be 12-24 months before we even hear about it (opinion).
  • In the meantime, my opinion is that it’s moot whether this is fair or reasonable. MMOs have lots of things to obtain; I don’t bother trying to obtain them all. I try to pick the things I really want and that are going to be fun (or at least, not too tedious) to obtain.
  • So ask yourself: how much do you really want legendary armor? Is it because it’s new and shiny? or because it’s something you really like (aesthetically or functionally).
    ————————————
In answer to the OP’s question, the devs have said two things:
  • They don’t have current plans to add another set of legendary armor
  • They don’t have current plans to offer access to legendary armor outside of raids; it’s intended as a reward commensurate with challenging content.

Taken together with the fact that this set of 15 armors (3 weights times 5 races), the answer is
No, we won’t be seeing another set of legendary armor.

Of course, this begs the question of whether it’s reasonable or fair to gate one of the few new armor collections in the game behind raids.

I’m convinced that ANet never intended that legendary armor would be considered a carrot for raiding — it was solely their goal to make sure that raiding had a really special reward. Rather, I think, they were clueless about how many people would “expect” to be able to earn them.

They were perfectly fine with raiding being end game for a minority of players — it’s us players who presumed there’s an additional motivation (not a crazy theory, just not one I think which holds much water based on how ANet designs other rewards).

Given the situation, is this fair?
Well, honestly, I think it’s moot. Fair or not, even if they agreed (which they do not appear to), it would be at least 5-8 months before they’d change it. And given that they’ve already unofficially announced the next expansion (coming in 6-8 months), I doubt they could pull it off.

In my opinion, it’s at least a year if not two years before we’d see any other source for legendary armor.

So the question we have to ask ourselves is:
Do we want legendary armor that badly? Or do we want it because it’s new & shiny?

My feeling is that lots of people only want it because it’s there. Me? I’ve gotten used to the idea that, in a fun MMO, there will be hundreds of things that I could get, but really don’t need or want. I’ll have more fun pursuing my own goals, rather than ones that the game sets for me.

oh yes, so bad, it’s not like all the other maps where the story grants you access you the new zones.. it’s almost like you have to play the game in order instead of randomly move about, that is so unheard of and never done before in any game

sorry.. I just can’t add enough sarcasm..
to anyone who complains they have to play in sequence, rather than dot their way through.. is this your first game?

I don’t understand why you have trouble understanding that gating is boring for a lot of people. I play the game plenty. I don’t like feeling forced to repeat content for the sake of repeating it, which is what gating maps by story completion does.

I can understand ANet having an economic interest in my participating in the game to grant me free access to each episode; I don’t understand their insistence that I must play the story on each toon or spend currency (for which I have other uses) to get a portal scroll that I will likely only use once or twice per toon.

I don’t think it makes GW2 a grindy game or poorly designed. I simply find it tedious and I wish they would stop.

tl;dr yes, I play as much GW2 as anyone and yet I still dislike gating maps with story.

(Although, again as I noted above, this episode isn’t any worse than any of the others.)

Good point.

It might be that the Mastery article was accurate during episode 2 and no one checked since to find out if it held true for the other maps.

Or it might be incorrect from the get go. The anonymous user who added “any map” made only that one update, so there’s no way to check their reliability. i.e. “needs verification” (and it’s probably hard to verify, since wiki veterans are likely to already have it unlocked and non-veteran editors aren’t likely to think to check before|after).

What is the Average Mastery Level?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Average is a misleading metric for masteries. The player base is probably divided into several main groups:

  • Veterans who have raided at least once: they will be largely in the 150-186 range
  • Veterans who haven’t raided even once: probably 125-178
  • Veterans who could care less about a lot of things that seem important to us forum regulars: 65-130
  • New players (within the last year): 0-50, with many above 100.
  • PvP only: similar probably

That’s in addition to the point that mtpelion makes, that GW2/E includes (some) inactive players.

All in all, I wouldn’t trust any single number to give us a good sense of the distribution of mastery points (even if it were tied to number of hours — I spend a lot my time chatting or AFK-while-in-town).

According to you. For me, GW1 storytelling was largely longwinded, predictable, repetitive, and dull. I liked Season 1 better (as a story). And story 3 has some great moments , but it has some lousy half-hours too.

Anyhow, I really don’t expect “great” storytelling from ANet — it’s pretty hard to manage that and appeal to the bulk of the community, and keep things interesting in terms of gameplay. I expect them to keep us guessing about what comes next, to include some humor and local color + lore, and to keep offering us epic adventures and foes. And, despite my dislike of LS2 (or GW1) stories, they do well with that.

There’s also the problem of keeping the same actors available indefinitely. For a professional, committing to a franchise for more than a year or two can be difficult. For the franchise, committing to the same staff can be expensive.

For example, Zojja is probably out in part due to Felicia Day’s schedule (and new contract costs).

If I were ANet, I’d make it easy to swap out existing characters and swap in new ones, just in case you can’t get folks for Expac #2 or LS4. I’m sure it helps that ANet has a more consistent schedule for Living World + Expac Stories, but they won’t be able to keep every actor for the duration of GW2.

Forge all. Self explanatory.

It’s unlikely; self-explanatory.
More seriously: there are economic reasons why some things are made in the forge and some are made at crafting stations. It affects the economy if forging is faster, mostly in ways that are mostly bad for the poorer players and make little difference to the richer ones. In particular, anything that has a random result needs to be forged more slowly rather than easily crafted.

I think it would be more useful for ANet to revisit the list of things that need to be forged and move some to crafting.

Open all. An option for all the bags, boxes and boxes in boxes to be opened.

Salvage all is mostly reasonably managed, since only a few things can drop from any given item. With ‘containers’, it’s a lot more complicated making sure that there’s enough inventory space.

Further, humans tend to devalue items that drop too easily, as evidenced by the impact of salvage-all on salvage items (since that change, there is a bigger spread between highest buy and lowest sale offer, more often than there used to be) — that is, because we “salvage all” all the time, we don’t always notice when we have a high-value item.

Open-all on bags will have a similar impact, but on many more things.

In short: it’s probably technically feasible, if more complicated than salvage-all; however the implications are bigger and more widespread, i.e. not as easy to implement as it sounds

Revamp of minor/major sigils either let us salvage them into something, even just luck would be great….or just stop giving them to us.

Luck would be a terrible idea — lots of veterans are reaching maximum use of luck already (partly thanks to salvage-all).

It would be good if there were other things to do with minor upgrades (and even majors), but wouldn’t it be better if ANet first revamped how we upgrade gear? That could use some attention, too, and that would impact the gameplay more.

I can’t take the clutter wars anymore.

It might be worth your time to spend a few hours improving your inventory management skills.

I don’t mean that you’ll ever enjoy managing inventory; I do mean it’s possible to reach a point where it’s not a burden, just a necessary part of something you like to do (in the same way that gardeners have to weed).

It’s a commonly known fact that if you care about LW achievements, you better do them in the first week or so, after that the population dwindles so much it’ll become much harder. I usually try to rush them in the first few days when there’s still a lot of people.

It’s uncommonly known that this isn’t true. Sometimes it’s actually harder during the first weeks because too many people are ‘heck-bent’ on completing some achievements and not others. Lots of the events turn out to be easier with fewer people.

Rushing them the first week is a perfectly fine strategy, but so is taking your time.

To the OP’s point: I’m sorry that you’re having difficulty, but the issue isn’t farmers — if those guys weren’t in your map farming, they’d be in some other map farming; they aren’t affecting your map’s ability to do anything.

If you aren’t a member of a guild or social group that can help, and if there’s no LFG opportunity, create one — you’re never going to be the only one needing an achievement. Navigating Draconis Mons

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I think the OP needs to give it more time. It gets easier the more you move around.

I’m directional challenged in games in the best of circumstances, due to mirror-image and rotational dyslexia (that is, I have trouble distinguishing left from right, east from west on a map, and so on). My first visit to the map was horribly confusing. I couldn’t figure out how to get up and right or down and under or any of a variety obvious transportation issues.

It often doesn’t help me to follow someone, either. Oh sure, I get from A to B for that one occasion, but I can’t replicate the experience when I want to move from “near A” to “probably near B.”

And of course, the limitations of the mapping UI only makes this worse.

However, by accepting that it’s going to be confusing and just moving around, I find that I’m able to navigate more quickly more often than when I first arrived. I have a couple of go-to techniques that seem to be helping, but mostly it’s just getting familiar with the zone — it is, for me, a lot easier than TD.

Here are the most important tricks I’ve learned:

  • The map is mostly built on a spiral/healix form: if you just follow the ‘obvious’ path up, you can go up and around from bottom to top (and vice versa).
  • Lava Tubes are your friend, much more so than updrafts.
  • The new “spiderman” skill is fantastic for going up or over — you can grapple to otherwise unreachable spots and then glide, allowing you to go up a cliffside.
  • Sometimes the easiest way ‘below’ is to go up and glide down. Similarly, the quickly way up sometimes involves going down to grab a lava tube, mushroom, updraft, or better angle to use the Oakheart’s Reach.

tl;dr map is challenging; experience makes it a lot easier than TD for someone like me, who has trouble navigating simple maps, especially when you start learning a few tricks

The useful thing about the thread is that the OP is doing a good job of trying to separate out bugs and objective issues, separating out critiques of the aesthetics (the first are more straightforward to address, while the latter are more complicated to agree upon, let alone do something about). That makes it more likely that ANet will get a chance to deal with each.

Theoretically, this should be less common in the digital age. But it turns out that it’s sometimes worse: the delays are often due to software that isn’t setup to deal with uncertainty and humans who misunderstand instructions that have been passed through many others before reaching their desk.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

tl;dr proponents of a change to supply or demand or leather undermine their suggestion by appealing to economics. I believe ANet would be more concerned if more people point out that it’s demoralizing to them.

Here’s my economic appeal: “Can I get a refund on the gems I spent for two character slots that I’m never going to use because I won’t be able to afford to craft the armor for a thief and engineer?”

Try instead the following:
“ANet: I lost interest in playing new characters because I’m daunted by the cost of outfitting them with medium armor.”

My point is that you don’t have to argue the economics — that’s a losing battle for anyone who (a) hasn’t trained in MMO economics and (b) doesn’t have access to the game data. John Smith and Mike O’Brien love data analysis and they are good at it.

They sometimes forget that data isn’t what drives us to play; it’s simply a way to try to estimate our interests. It’s up to us to remind them that there are human beings behind the numbers and that, regardless of whether the economy is healthy, some people might not be enjoying themselves because of the costs.

Again, I don’t have a problem with ANet rebalancing the recipes for leather — I’d even prefer it to the status quo. At the same time, I also don’t have a problem with the current costs — I can buy all I need (I simply don’t enjoy it).

(And again, I strongly recommend separating the discussion of leather from mystic coins — they bear little in common except that both can be deposited to material storage. )

Ah, okay, got your comment a bit wrong. I agree!

Since Ori did, too, I would blame the author of the comment, not the reader

Trying to do this event for Incinerator collection, but it’s bugged out. Old bug from what I’ve seen but it’s not like I can change maps and have it get fixed…. is there a solution to this?

You can almost always change maps, it’s just hardly ever convenient. Your best bet is shortly after a patch or when Iron Marches is the target of a 4-event daily, that’s when you get new instances.

Good luck.

I’d try the following Lunarian: turn all your graphics settings to minimum (and consider using a smaller resolution). If that doesn’t work, have someone else run the mission for you (and you just leech), with your screen powered off until you need to accept your reward.

Simultaneously start a support ticket and work with ANet to resolve this:
https://help.guildwars2.com/anonymous_requests/new

The possibilities are:

  • There’s a bug in the game, and graphics issues tend be difficult to track down, so they usually don’t get fixed quickly.
  • There’s an issue with your graphics card, memory, or something else that’s equally difficult to track down (since it’s not happening all the time).

Either way, it would mean waiting for a fix, which is why I recommend trying some extreme work-arounds that have sometimes proven successful for others.

Video games and especially sometimes cutscenes can really wig out graphics in a way that they don’t experience most of the time (even in the same video game or other, more graphic-intensive ones).

Good luck & please keep us posted on what you discover.

MYSTIC CLOVER 10 RECIPY BROKEN...

There’s a 0.00032 chance of getting 0 clovers in 20 tries of using the 10x recipe, assuming the wiki’s drop rate of 0.33.

There’s an infinitesimal chance of getting on 12 clovers in 100 tries of the 1x recipe.

In your shoes, I’d start a support ticket and wait to see if anyone else is reporting anything similar. I haven’t seen anything on reddit and I’d presume that at least some people are forging for clovers to put the finishing touches on their legendary armor.

Legendary Insights

Back in the days I needed 3 months for my first legendary and it was one single weapon. In my opinion this time gate is fair enough. Acquiring legendary weapons is a joke nowadays.

Btw. most raiders have their full clears on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday so there’s enough time for them getting the other stuff.

Plus just a kindly reminder:
It was announced 1.5 years ago that you’ll need legendary insights to craft the armor. Dunno but ppl who raided every week are about to have 600 LI if I’m not mistaken. And they haven’t had the chance to get 13 every week in the past.

Good points. A set of armor is vaguely equivalent to 6 legendary weapons, so it’s somewhat surprising how little they require.

“Lightly staffed” was intended to refer to the fact that after working hard all year round, ANet tends to let some staff (especially senior people) take a well-earned vacation. There seem to be fewer updates between Dec 1 and Feb 1 and especially fewer scheduled releases.

All I’m saying is that if the expac doesn’t launch by November, it seems unlikely they’d try to launch in Dec or Jan, by which point they’d be out of the cadence projected by Mike O’Brien.

In other words, November seems likely at this point, rather than a prediction of overly-hyped fanbois.

Could we get sigil change 4 leg. weapons?

Imho as long as you pay for it in the first place, I don’t see how badly it would impact economy.

Considering 95% of all Sigils are already listed at vendor price, what possible harm could this do?

Sounds like they thought they same things, until they started investigating further. I imagine they can’t report the details because doing so would also have an economic impact.

As long as we get some progress reports, I’m willing to trust that they know better than we do that there are potential consequences and that it’s worth delaying a solution for managing sigils in legendaries.

Thanks for posting the quote, Trogdor.

My translation: they want legendary sigil swaps, too. They also want to make sure it doesn’t have unintended consequences.

There are tons of legendaries out there and tons more being made, whereas last week there were zero legendary armor pieces and, since they are gated by raids, we won’t be seeing nearly as many. We’ve waited this long for l-weapon QoL improvements; we can afford to wait a little longer, so they have time to get it right.

Are Guild Missions Still Supported Content

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Why not start a new thread and just ask the question: what’s going on with guilds, ANet? Are we going to see new g-mish? What sort of g-mish would others like to see? Extend the current ones? New types?

You’ve confused “dead” and “unsupported” with “stale.” We don’t need new missions; we want them. We don’t need to hear from them. You do your own cause a disservice by “demanding” ANet do something — ANet isn’t our servant; they are a business and have all sorts of concerns besides guilds.

And frankly, I don’t really care if ANet says anything at all — they used to talk about fractals a lot and it wasn’t until recently we saw what they could deliver. I love the new fractals and I love the direction of the team. That doesn’t mean I forget that it was a long time between Thaumanova and Chaos (never mind the long-requested revamps to swamp, among other fractals). In other words: better that ANet says nothing until they are ready to deliver something.

Economics of Mystic Coin & Hardened Leather

Illconceived Was Na.9781

No, “Supply/demand economics” aren’t lost on anyone here – everyone knows the demand outstrips the supply of these items. Yes, prices on the TP are ‘so high’ because ‘everyone’ wants to buy the materials – because they can’t get enough on their own, and there aren’t enough people who DON’T want the materials they have and are willing to sell. That’s the problem with Leather – It’s a basic material everyone needs. In order for the economy to be healthy, there needs to be a balance of people more than they want and willing to sell, and people without enough and willing to buy.

You’re confusing “healthy” economy with a “cheap goods” economy. Healthy simply means that anyone can buy whatever they need and anyone can sell whatever they need, that supply or demand cannot be controlled by a consortium.

Leather might be expensive, it might even be “too expensive” (if we can ever agree on what that means). But I can still buy as much as I want. (It just turns out at these prices, I don’t want to buy nearly as much.)

I don’t have a problem with ANet doing something so it’s easier to get leather or so that we don’t have to spend as much. I don’t even mind that if they do so, it would cost me a lot coin. (Either because I bought too much or because I tried to sell stuff made with leather for too much.)

But the only reason to do so is because of the price. That’s not an “economic” argument — it’s a quality of life concern (or a design preference, if you believe that cloth and metal armor should cost around the same as leather armor)

tl;dr proponents of a change to supply or demand or leather undermine their suggestion by appealing to economics. I believe ANet would be more concerned if more people point out that it’s demoralizing to them.

Make all Portal Scrolls to just 1 Item

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Actually, why is it even a scroll? Why not turn it into an account unlock? Spend unbound magic and every character on your account gains access to one WP on the new map (or even all 3 WPs, since there are generally so few). That eliminates the need to keep track of an inventory item.

I haven’t bought any of them because I can’t really imagine using them more than once per character.

Yeah, I was hesitant about buying them too, but then I bought the one for Bitterfrost Frontier. I keep all of my level 80’s at the flax farm in VB, so when I wanted to hop to Bitterfrost to farm berries, or whatever, it was ~4 silver to way point in. Use the scroll and it drops you at the central WP for free. Considering that at first I hit the map on 5 or 6 toons, that’s 20-24 silver per day that I’d save. Two or three days and you’ve saved the 50 silver the scroll cost. Hopping to the Guildhall is free, so that cut the return to the flax farm down to ~1.5 silver or so.

Okay, yes, I’m talking about saving a couple of silver per day per toon, but that can add up quick. And as I’m salvaging everything and selling very little so that I can level our GH, saving 10 or 20 silver per day is pretty meaningful for my income.

My point is I’d be prepared to spend a few gold to avoid having to deal with 6 scrolls per living story. In other words, I agree with you that the the scrolls are cost efficient if you use them every day. For those of us who only send at most toon per day, if that, … well, I’m prepared to spend a few gold to avoid having 6 additional inventory items just for transportation (never mind all the other detritus that builds up during each episode).
