+1 too
Rifle was the main reason i did decided to play engi when i was new to the game, we w
ere the only class who used rifle as a viable option, and it was a jack of all trades in his moment, now, the poor rifle needs love, perhaps not much as shield does, but rifle was very unique on his own way, i want it to play in raids or pvp in some future.
Many people have tried the engi healer build, but it gets neglected by the high need of water fields, because the med kit by itself its very bad, the issue is, if engi has to heal via water fields, then the heal gets neglected by the other fields your teammates does, if your blast had priority in your own fields then maybe it would be more valuable to take engi as a support, but how it is right now, no.
Many people is asking for a med kit buff so badly, and i do too, buffing med kit would give us a new fresh way to play engi.
Do the devs understand the importance of kits to our class? I doubt it.
“OOH, Welcome to the balance team, we balance the game i think”
“Hey Ray!”
“What the kitten is an engineer?”
New kits are the best way to expand engi. If the next elite spec is minions again im out for good.
Or goood gadgets/elixirs too, it doesnt necessarily have to be kits, sure they are great, but i feel we need something else that can take the spot as viable besides of kits or gtfo.
You’d think that Flamethrower auto is in a good place with all the aegis, shields of wrath, and projectile denial flying around, but the issue is that you just can’t trade hits with people as an Engineer. It’s a long channel with low damage, and any class that just decides to sit in your Flamethrower and auto you while you auto them is going to win that trade almost 100% of the time. Which IMO is really, really sad.
Lets see the standard pvp condi engi aa’s, you have pistol aa, tool aa, and flamethrower aa, wich one would you use to fill when your damage skills are in cd?
- Pistol? safe range, would use this aa more often if projectile hate wasnt a big problem.
- Tool? prob the worse damage aa option, doubt that using the full chain its worth at all in a condi build.
- Flamethrower? long aa, but, it doesnt have to deal with projectile hate, and melee range isnt so mandatory, also, multiple hits!, you can trigger your incendiary ammo in 1 aa for sure, blinded?, will probably just affect the first hit of the 10 hits the aa deals per use.
If im saying ft aa is good its not becuase its amazing by itself, but becuase its the most doable option to use.
Whatver you guys think can help, PLEASE, dont kill my condi engi, its my only alternative to not play scrapper :c
To be honest, I feel like Flamethrower is just a weak kit in general right now. Mainly due to bugs, honestly. Air Blast is bugged so if you accidentally cancel the ability during the cast time, or you get interrupted, it goes on full cooldown. The 2 ability STILL gets sucked into the ground half the time and just does nothing.
Tack on the fact that the 1 and 4 abilities are generally, fairly worthless in PvP, the fact that incendiary ammo almost never lands anymore (evasion/reflect/block uptime has gone up dramatically with the release of HoT) and Flamethrower kit just becomes a product of a bygone era.
I do think Flamethrower, among MANY of the engineer’s utility skills, could use some love. If they added a bit more functionality to it, it could be competitive. It doesn’t have to be on the 5 ability, but I think your idea is reasonable.
That said, I think the 5 ability is decent. It’s an instant-cast AoE blind on a moderate cooldown. You can pop a blind while in the middle of executing another ability, which is fairly good utility. Or…well, it used to be good utility, until HoT power creep came out, and a single blind didn’t cut it anymore, at least in PvP. I actually like the ability, but it probably fell behind a bit with the power creep of the expansion.
The issue is, pve wise incendiary ammo and napalm carry the whole kit godlikely (and air blast its now part of the dps rotation thanks to his recent buff), and also, isnt his aa in a good spot considering the amount of projectile hate that currently exists?
Well the point is, if the kit exceeds the desired parameters in at least 1 gamemode (in pve for example: dps), i’ll be very unlikely that anet will do positive changes if in one area its doing it great, with that being said, buffing skill 5 would definitely not be a problem imo unlike the rest of the skills :P

It’s used as a safe stomp in the pvp condi build when used at the right moment, at least, other than that, yeah not very worth it as a defensive option :/
the only + thing it has its that its insta casted, so it never hurts your dps.

I saw an engi in pvp playing a Rifle + Gadgets decap build. He was actually pretty good at it .. but I still destroyed him by waving my Necro scepter at him a few times. I I felt bad because here’s a guy playing a skill build well and I just come over and faceroll him with autoattack.
Same with the p/p condi builds people are trying these days. They load me up with burn stacks – I transfer them back immediately and can do so like 4-5 times a minute.
Someday I’d like to go back to playing my rifle engi in pvp, but can’t even consider it with the current balance.
Condi engi vs necro is a sudden death match, if engi loads his conditions and gets into elixir s in time, engi wins, if the necro transfer the conditions to engi in time, necro wins :P (implying both classes didnt took other condi cleanses.)
(edited by Ivantreil.3092)
I prefer Rifle over both. More interesting animations.
I do love rifle too becuase of the shotgun feeling, but it was use pistols or being sub-optimal, the day rifle gets love i will go rifle as soon as they buff it :P
idk if this happens in other races, but the asuras always drop a smile when they use poison dart volley :P
They can balance whenever they kitten well please…but as long as this stack-class-forced-50%-must-carry-low-mmr-as-high-mmr matchmaking idea continues: None of it really matters.
Solo/Duo Queue was step one. Why must we wait until Season 8+ until the rest of the fixes get implemented?
you are right that fixes should be more common, BUT, if balance patches were more constant, people would tolerate more the meta shiftings, as they wouldn get bummered with having a class not working in the current meta.
when destroyedevery X time.personally i prefer on destroy or on summon
every X time doesnt lend itself to expendability. suddenly the life of the summon is valuable, because more life time = more fields.
That’s exactly the point: you’ll have to choose if you want to play a build focused on summoning and destroying gyros as fast as posible to gain great CC, or a build which needs you to sustain and maintain your minion working to gain boons.
Of course my examples aren’t the best, but the point stands: instead of overnerfing the only current build, they should divide it, creating opportunities for more viable playstyles.
I guess I misunderstood you. I say that as a general thing with regards to gyros since they seem to be intended to be disposable and not something that you try to keep alive.
I agree that more playstyles is good :p
I think an overheat mechanic would be cool for gyros, they cant be destroyed, but each time they use their skills they win heat, when they overheat, they temporarily malfunction until they cool down again :P
idk if this happens in other races, but the asuras always drop a smile when they use poison dart volley :P
I really don’t like scrapper.
This is the build i am using since start of season 4. It has a great burst but you have to play it as old sd berserker build even if you are condi .
Elixir S and elixir U are a great couple : Elixir U gives you a really strong bust to use as alternate of FT toolbet skill and also give you a projectil reflection, a great skill.
The only class really hard to fight are warriors for their resistance and some dh , not all. In any case, quite often , i am loosing i am able to stealth and run away. If you play as “+1” in a team fight you can be devasting. Try it for fun. Obviously is not ESL.
Scrappers can be an issue too .. but it depends … many time you will kill them if you play smarty .
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQJAqalUUhatY5Vw+KQ7FLsFlYHNFPxYOOG/I4HWiBAA-TJhHABAcCAA+BAQx+DeXGAAThe idea obviously is to kill before be killed … I am also evaluating a variant based on alchemy , firearms , inventions with shield traited but the problem is dps … it is quite low so i have to think it better to be viable …
I use that build sometimes too
, quite bursty :P, my only issue with it its that the toolbelt is situational, even at safe stomping, but still, a good choice imo :P
It is a fun build , not made for ESL but it can be really strong. It is situational , true, but you have 2 great source of damage, elixir U and toolbet skill. and if you begin with elixir U … dodge and activate kinetic battery , you can use ft toolbet twice. It is really an absurde burst. Obviously you have to play as a thief …. but it is really really fun for me . And in any case you have 2500 toughess, not as rabid but not that bad… and elixirs remove conditions . You have not the sustain of scrapper, but with stealth , elixir S, toss elixir U and a bit of attention you have a little sustain too . I tried the classic build with toolkit but for me i was not able to win 1 vs1 quite often. I lasted more with toolkit but it is hard to make sufficient damage to kill before be killed. With this build instead, i win more often becouse i lose a great block from toolkit, yes… but i gain an absurde damage and against range classes like rangers or pistol thief toolbet elixir U is great
idk why, but tool kit simply doesnt work for me, utility googles, elixir u, elixir b or rocket boots have done me a better work for me than tool kit
I feel that too, tool kit has more survival, but you dont damage more than the other options that i mentioned, i guess pry bar cant carry the kit so much after all.
I really don’t like scrapper.

Giving you an update!
I can conclude, bomb kit stills peform awful, tried it over tool kit, and over flamethrower, you cant make the people eat all the damage, so its not worth it.
I tried shield too, trying to make the poison damage more painful, but it was still very bad, not enough damage, and the stun was pretty much invisible, his impact was so minimal, the stun was lost in all the caos of the match, and the shield was traited still, so awful compared to pistol off-hand, shield 4 was also a downgarded version of tool kit 4, so that skill didnt did his job well too.
In the other hand, utility googles did showed me some good matches, i managed to do some great burst with it, and sometimes i could pull 20 stacks of vulnearbilty thanks to kinetical battery, i took it over tool kit, i dint had so much trouble surviving as i did with the other builds.
Summary:
- Shield not worth it
- Bomb kit not worth it
- Utility googles can work over tool kit
Tomorrow ill make some power build tests, see how rocket boots peform now

Been trying the use of bombs without being traited (because you know, survivability traits first), it has his moments, but i feel that utility googles its performing even better than bombs for the moment, needs further testing, an yep, im speaking ina condi engi build, taking those ones over tool kit, the rest is normal.
I didn’t even know there was a difference in armors…..
The only difference is that golden armor has a more larger base health, so they can survive and tank more damage than a silver one
Prob the only positive thing on all this nonsense patch….
This is pretty much just for make it similar to Analyze, thats the only reason i see they gave them reveal.
(edited by Ivantreil.3092)
Delete your post if you arent going to bring something constructive, its a new patch, what did you expect? people are experimenting builds man
You know, that 25% buff damage would have made sense if it was given to the mines! why the rocket boots?, if you wanted to buff rocket boots, why not bufff his condi damage!?
If just wolfie was still with us…
Living with kits for forever…. sadly im already used to it
Scrapper elixir s elixir b inc
“We’ve been looking to improve the engineer and to support the areas it’s been lacking in”
The area we are lacking is supporting allies (med kit). Why wasn’t that improved?
True, and it was asked so badly to buff this
While i dont like the way anet took us, im still happy with this patch, we might have a chance as a sideoption in the condi role
(edited by Ivantreil.3092)
At least rifle is ‘meh’. Shield is simply terrible. I’d hope the next weapon we get is an mainhand because that might save shield a little.
Thats why people are guessing maces/daggers/swords as our next specialization, staff is aonther nice option but definitely amother mainhand besides pistol is needed
And some skills are meant to be power based, and some condi based. For instance Hammer is a power weapon it does no condi dmg. And pistols mainly do condi dmg even though they also do some power dmg, but it’s low especially if u run with condi gear on,
Pretty much, if you try to go berserker stats with pistols you will see it does scale very bad compared to rifle or hammer, becuase it was intended to be a condi weapon, the raw power damage is just a little bonus.
I would suggest make our skill 1 a non aa, and a burst heal, sprayed like flamethrower aa, or elixir gun 3, let the chill heal you
Perhaps that gimmicky evade could be forgiven if the trait had other sinergies with other stuff, i mean, we have mines that do little with what the explosives trait offers for a single use explosive, rumble could be taken as explosive too, acid bomb could be taken as an explosion too! why not?
(edited by Ivantreil.3092)
Skills 2 3 4 5 really sucks because those are 1. throwables 2. for a single user
If not throwable, we could at least use med kit for ourself. And maybe a trait to up those four skills for 5 targets in a 360 range. Also, skill 1 should make few damages, and maybe heal ourself, or have a bigger effect with an higher CD, or heal two times more. Thank you Santa Clause.
I actually find 4 decent enough for when you dont want to run streamlined kits, you jsut have to throw it when you need the swiftness, but i agree with the rest of the skills, a very irrelevant resistance, a fury with long cast, and a med kit who doesnt really helps with the healing.
Hehe, since we use kits already in everything in pve, better get a buff kit so we have a full kit build :P
Our survivability is at a good place.
False. Do you play wvw? Our surviability is trash even in full nomads.
And if you play pvp, hes right, Engi state is very splitted in each gamemode.
Adding to what Lust said, if you are interested in a dps build, maybe you should give condi engi a try.
I like the idea of being the “jack of all trades”, but given this title they should be in a position where players request “X class or Engi” rather than the current “No Engis, only X class”.
I think you nailed with what we should be or achieve, being the filler class should be our role, we have the tools imo, and i dont mind if i have to live in kits for the rest of my life and not see any other utility play anymore, as long as we achieve that.
With the incoming balance patch, i thought this would be good to talk about it:
Idk about you guys, but if something always noticed (at least from the recent balances patches we have got) it’s that, we always pass to the patch trough the backdoor, no one has bat us an eye or rant us that we need a nerf/buff immediately (and the buff part, is usually us asking for it), if we get nerf, good some other classes say (respecting pvp), but we weren’t the primary target in that patch for sure.
We are quite unwanted in raids (still playable tough), no one is begging to buff us for sure (i just saw 2 messages talking about it in the whole thread), the last patch i remember watching 2 posts in the gw2 subreddit talking about concerns about our position in raids, how bad our rifle looked, etc, but im sure those threads was only visited by people who plays Engineers.
And here we go again, the attention will be targeted to other classes (Druids and DH’s in pvp, Revs and Mesmers in pve, and Mesmers and Eles in WvW ), once again…
Is this good or bad, that we are the only ones putting attention to were we are going?
Where are the Engineer changes and buffs?
Good question, engi was left out a lot lately.
Btw, when is the new balance patch coming time wise? 1 Week/ 2?
Good question, but very unclear what they are going to do with, i see anet could throw Engineers to any direction they want right now (except to a srapper buff, it would put him tier 1 in PvP), so the path that we are going to follow its not designed yet.
Scrapper is supposed to be a defensive support Elite spec.
the problem is, your support comes from gyros, and they are crap.
Function gyro is nearly useless in pve… and Anet knows that, they said they were going to try to add something more to it but never did…We can only hope for a nice offensive support / dps elite spec for the next one…
Chances are we are going to get a mh weapon for the next specialization, so im sure a dps spec would be the way to go, (unless its a trait trying to make shield shine?)
You wanna keep full gyro?, i would swap shreder gyro for purge gyro, that poor gryo it’s in a bad state for the moment, but overall, you should be good, you might want to sacrifice a gyro for elixir gun for have access to range damage, Bunker down should do a great synergy with your build since you have a high critical chance, swap and take it.
Think about getting alchemy trait tough, without elixir s (either as a passive or as a utility), i think you will have a hard time surviving, but anyway, your decision man.
Implying condi thief specs are part of the meta and that d/d its not better than p/p, i dont see why people are defending p/p poor situation… (off topic, we are discussing about a possible rifle, not p/p in this thread)
For all we know this rifle could be the opisite od what people are saying (high dmg long range) everyone sais hammer was going to be knock down heaven bur look what happened to that.
Sure, but if it’s not high damage long range then it’s junk and I do not want it at all.
If it’s longer range that P/P AND deals more damage than P/P they why have P/P in the game anymore?
True, this rifle cant be a burst type weapon because that would kill p/p purpose, im guessing the weapon will have a mix of long range skills and melee skills, that would sound ok for me.
-Warriors must take discipline
-Revs must take retribution
-Engies take Invention
-Mesmers take Inspiration
-Rangers take Nature magic
-Guardians take valour
-Thieves take Trickery
As a main engi, the invention trait is optional to be honest, you can take tool tait over that and still survive kitten well if you know what you are doing, what it makes us survive is the alchemy trait, an engi with no elixir s passive is a dead engi for sure. (It would be another story if AED was actually a good heal).
Keep in mind that rifle is currently only available in 2 classes, if its not thief someone will definitely will have to get rifle for the next specialization, what other candidates we have for rifle, i think ranger is the only one no? that makes it a 50/50 chance to get rifle or no…
(everyone is now scrappers)
Not really, full p/p engi here, either pvp or pve!,
, still a secret lover of the rifle :P
Go charr if you wanna keep it traditional, asura if you like the modern engi theme :P
I think gadgets should behave like signets
I love this aspect if Gadgets were to receive a rework from the ground-up much better.
Immunity to blindness as the passive for Utility Goggles, maybe Slick Shoes to be the utility version of +25% movement speed.
They could even use Bunker Down (without the bandage) or Takedown Round as the passive for Throw Mine, making room for new traits.
That sound like a really good idea imo
