Both of you view the scenario from different angles. And honestly, although you made good points XTD, I’m with Nate on this for now.
It isn’t that hard to get a T3 objective but it’s very hard to defend paper.
Personal preference does not equate to more skill nor does it mean builds one does not prefer to play are not viable.
I have a personal preference in playing the thief over all other professions and this does not equate to other professions not being viable or as being for “noobs”. Now I also find power builds more interesting then condition builds but the fact remains condition builds more survivable. They HAVE to be that by design simply to allow the time for those conditions to work. This has nothing to do with “not thinking” as is being implied, it has to do with how a given build works.
Condition builds will be more forgiving and in particular for those using dire. Power builds will kill faster but allow for fewer mistakes. All the self claimed “skill and thinking” in the world will not allow a person with 2k in armor and 15k in health to survive 13 some odd AOE attacks stacked atop you.
In WvW I have found that those power builds are far less able to survive all that AOE and especially at choke points. The Condition build I use can. It that simple. Power creep coupled with much less in the way means by which a power based thief can deal with the same makes things yet harder for many thief builds.
(one thing I do find interesting was that in the early feedback on the DH karl getting slammed because they were going to be UP and not worth playing when compared to Reaper/Chrono etc. My own DH just massacres people and they all over the place now)
Since this was directed at me without calling me out:
what’s your point?
I’m a bit bummed that the previous thread is gone – did I miss something?
Isn’t it allowed to talk about trenchcoats?
My servers are usually “my guild” I have something like “server pride” although most people who know me probably don’t think I have – If I’m on your server I’m your guildmate, whether you like it or not.
I think the problems wvw has are far deeper than just coverage – still trying to figure out what my problems are.
Better rewards are only “skin deep”.
Two times yesterday, massive Elona blob at gate with five rams. Me on treb at garri. They got the gate to 40% before I killed all the rams, and cowed them so they had no supply. After that they gave up and went to a tower instead.
No offense but the offending server might be at fault as well.. just saying biting my tongue
Edit: But honestly on IoJ and sometimes on GH we never gave up -which was silly at times. 4 hours to get the blue keep gg!

I believe in build diversity too. All I was saying above was that if you feel like you’re struggling with fighting other current meta builds, that my build is a good solution as it works well. Not saying it’s the end all be all.
I get it though, it’s something different than you’re used to so you don’t like it. But like I said the meta is changing so we have to adapt or die.
I don’t need to comment on that, do I?
I was also replying to fat disgrace bout the d/p trapper question, not trying to sound kitteny to you. You should make a goodbye thread tho, it ended up renewing my love for the game.
Yes, I realized that after my edit.
I won’t make a goodbye thread which will get closed anyway as there’s no use to it – and I’m pretty much a “that’s it” person, I rarely have second thoughts. It takes a while for me to say “this is the end” though – Not happy about that fact.
Yes, most other thief builds when played good aren’t just one button spam – I thought you were a thief yourself?
No, we/I want build diversity and personally I don’t like condis, it’s not my style – it’s fine if others use it (to an extend as anet should look into condi/power balance for wvw) but I don’t want to be told “Yo scrub, get this condi build and smash #3 – stop complaining”
I loved this game for 2 things; wvw and thief – both is dying and I will fight until I have no hope anymore. I won’t make a goodbye thread though
Edit: I never heard of the D/P power trap build- but good for you =)
Actually no, I’ve had luck with it against skilled players in wvw and pvp alike. Usually takes at least 2 people to kill me with some exceptions. The sustained dmg from death blossom and the condi dodge from DD make it have impressive dps potential. That mixed with evades + more defensive stats (condi dmg only needs one stat unlike power prec ferocity) make it extremely hard to kill.
Most of the time you had an ally (distraction works wonders for a thief) and the rest of the video didn’t really look like skilled players.
If your idea of “skillfull play” is to smash one button, then the new meta is for you, yes.
I don’t want this though – I want to think.
Refer to my latest post. The key to your problems is in d/d condi evade spam.
That works against noobs.
I agree, Elder Scrolls Online has a superior and more stable economy which cannot be abused, but look at the class imbalances of ESO compared to GW2… GW2 reigns supreme atm when it comes to class balance in both PvE and PvP.
I disagree strongly with that – what has happened wasn’t balance but promoting skill less play as all classes have so many passives that they can make as many mistakes as they like and still live through it.
The problem isn’t RNG when looked at the player base at large. The variance due to the RNG is small relative to what players can cause by choosing to or not to try MFing a particular weapon precursor. Then you have the secondary impact from the players who got one whether or not to place them immediately on the TP or hold on to them until the price rises.
kitten, is my english that bad?
Someone: “There’s no RNG involved when buying from the TP”
Me: “There’s still RNG involved for those selling the item”
And that also effects the buyer (although there are a lot of factors which determine the price of a precurser) – no precurser without RNG, except it is crafted.
Jana are you here yet btw? Come find meeeeee!
Whenever you see
Josteinn: “gibberish, some numbers, rough percentage of something” in mapchat you know I’m there =)

Sometimes I feel like I was just “born yesterday”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the new HoT stats include condi/boon duration +/- ??? If they do, then no wonder they nerfed WvW meta foods.
I don’t own HoT.
The nerf to both + and – condi duration was in fact a buff to condi duration – and I do wonder why those who did the stats change didn’t notice.
As much as I like you, I disagree.
The poor attackers should run back to the camp, get some supply and build some catas which are a lot “meaner” than rams (bubble).
Edit: They could also build a counter treb.
Honestly: We’ve had so many great fights because we couldn’t just rush into a tower, why not keeping it like this?
Edit²: And a cannon destroys rams even faster, as well as trebs. Oil might be equally fast.

That’s one seriously evil looking cat. I’d call an exorcist if I were you…
That was what they guy who gifted me it and who it’s named after said
What people don’t realize is that a thief without stealth (except staff and S/D) is a dead thief. And that’s why a thief is “always” stealthed.
They should’ve worked on that but they rather went to bring revealed into the game and kitten ~ 1/8 of the players off – cause who cares, right?
ETA: So thieves were using stealth as intended but not expected because the core of thief’s mechanics is a science only grasped by the wisest men and women.

Darkhaven is T5 – just saying.
Edit: And I think the problem is that people are quitting the game/wvw and the question is why and the solution is to fix this, otherwise we could merge servers until only one is left.
A black ascended shortbow would be one of my wishes – but honestly, I’d love that.
Aww and black pistols, how cool would that be?
I always want to cheer when I read them.
" YEAAAH KODASH WAY TO GO!!! Oh wait, that was our camp.. So, I’m in a blob fight but 1-80 Kodash might be in our corner umm.. and where do I place my AoE again?"
I know it has been mentioned on this forum before but I couldn’t find the thread.
The notifications itself, yeah well, I’m undecided. On the one hand it’s nice, on the other hand I’m getting lazy because of them.
But can we please not have them in the middle of the screen?
Ps: Congrats Kodash! If you had claimed it I would’ve gotten another notification which distracted me from the blob fight I was in.
Hey, I wiped 2 zergs! See how many bags I got!
Unfortunately those bags aren’t yours, the bags that appear and stay around for some time are actually other players I believe. You bags still ‘glitter’ and de-spawn if you loot them.
Thanks for explaining, I was completely unaware – that’s why I made this perfect screenshot.
Well RNG is still partly responsible for the amount of certain precursers which are sold.
My TP flipping friend had a friend who held the monopol on 2 precursers for a while.
No, I said that the prices weren’t stable as you claimed but depend on many factors, right now spark costs 500 gold less than about a year ago.
Please try to understand my point, ok?
Edit: To make it easier for you: You answered on me saying there was still RNG in the amount of precursers on the TP – you said it wasn’t and that prices were stable.
I said 1) still RNG and that 2) prices aren’t stable but depend on a lot of factors. That are 2 different points or 1) is a point of 2).
(edited by Jana.6831)
The difference between server merges and transferring is that server merges means that I remain playing with all my friends on the server while transferring means i don’t.
True.
IoJ has been my first server 2 years ago. My friends left because our community back then was destroyed by people who bandwagoned onto our server. Some more stuff might have gone wrong, but I guess that was the point where many people quit as having that many people not caring for the server/our community was really hard.
Not saying that is bound to happen with merges but it can well be.
Edit: Grammar
(edited by Jana.6831)
I couldn’t hit players outside the gate with cows. No idea if this is intended – at the very least it’s new. Also I’m not so sure if walls and gates are bugged as at least 2 went down really fast but I didn’t really pay attention to their progress, maybe they were at 50% to start with.
As someone from a lower tier server, as someone who has been in the lowest tier very recently and as someone who refuses to leave my server – server merge would drastically improve the quality and population of at least the bottom three, if not four servers.
But someone would have to leave their servers for that, right?
Don’t forget that NA and EU are different things. On EU servers are dead for a few hours each day, no matter the tier. And all servers I’ve been on had a queue to EB at least at reset or every evening. The queue size is even the same for T5 and T1.
I think the problem isn’t the population alone, it’s also not the rewards – a huge problem is whether or not there’s a public. Question is why there often isn’t.
sigh
It depends on average drop changes. Not on the individual RNG variance. If Joe drops 3k gold into MF, won’t get anything back, and never comes back? For the person that buys said precursor that doesn’t matter, for every such Joe there’s a Bob that got dusk at the third try.The resulting TP price is stable, and doesn’t depend on the vagaries of chance or RNGesus favour.
So? There was still RNG involved, wasn it? As people claim there wasn’t.
Btw a TP flipping friend told me that the only thing one could hold a monopol on the TP was precursers/legendaries (and maybe some other stuff that wasn’t sold anymore).
So even for the buyer it was some kind of gamble and not “the sure way to get a precurser for that amount of gold”. Unless they were fine with the set price by the one holding the monopol of the precurser they wanted.
Edit: spelling
Edit²: Even if you want/ed to buy your precurser from the TP, you don’t buy them directly for gems, but the price depends on various factors: T5 mats prices, RNG of the people using the MF, how many people decide to use the MF, how many people decide to flip precursers on the TP, how many people decide to flip mats prices and so on – the prices have never been stable, unless 100-400 gold difference means stable to you.

Yes I suppose I’m forgetting about WvW where you can run away in one direction, but in SPvP you can’t do that.
Can’t say much about pvp, I’m still dolyak rank and stopped playing it for good after June. And before that I didn’t really know what I was doing anyway – trying to kill people and listening to the rage of my friends – fun times.
Edit: But my friend and I are evading each others backstabs in pvp arenas – just throwing that in – so theoretically it should be possible even in pvp.
Alright you dodged it, now you are down 1 dodge and he still has multiple seconds of stealth to hit you.
I’m a bit baffled as you’re a thief main – are you serious or trolling me?
A dodge usually gets you away from the thief, so he has to catch up = losing time. If you know the stealth pattern (what I explained above) you’ll know when he’ll approximately hit you – if he needs to be stealthed for a longer time, that one dodge destroys his chance to BS you.
Edit: Complete failure grammar and punctuation wise.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Alright so now you know that he is stealthed, what do, you can’t dodge it and if you do he doesn’t lose stealth, most you can do against it is turn rapidly and hope it hits your face.
I’ll remember that for the next time my buddy dodges my backstab “YO YOU CAN’T DO THAT HACKS!!”
All go South Bay cata spot!
“Yo guys, 500/500 supps and none of you built a balli to get that cata on vale out? Seriously?!”
Joking aside, pretty sure both DH’s and Rev’s will be toned down… between now and the next 3 years ofc.
In three years when they redesign the trait system again to just be a straight line.
Esports live broadcast then: 10 players with their heads on their keyboards.
(gif brought into my hands by Zero btw)
You can catch a glimpse of his screen, and he’s playing a DH.
Nah, everybody but thief will play like this with only one traitline.
For thief it will be faceplant instead of faceroll. flatline

They’re fun in wvw zergs but keep those heal buttons ready cuz Retaliation hurts like hell. :x
One of the earlier forums post of me is something like “Why are you guys crying about coverage? My server is always outnumbered (no lie, we were even outnumbered while having a queue) and we always crush zergs at least twice our number” – and that was true. We did so as pugs without TS, btw. And can you imagine how that feels? Was pretty good (understatement).
Not possible anymore due to multiple changes one of them is DH traps. Anet nerfed skill big time.
The problem with dragonhunter traps isn’t only low base health classes but you can imagine how much fun these traps are in zergfights.
But anet apperantly has said long ago that they won’t balance wvw, which they then did which brought us the pirate ship meta (ranged zergfights).
So yeah.. whatever, I guess.
Actually the bugs and camera changes are what’s putting me off of wvw right now.
All the stuff mentioned in the OP is really annoying and with that exhausting. Please fix it.
Good players are hard to hit in general.
When a thief uses a short duration stealth, you’re right, people with experience know how and when to dodge to avoid that backstab.
When a thief stacks a bunch of stealth using HS+BP, or Shadow Refuge, then, no, you don’t know when to dodge a backstab. Good players will know how to generally move to avoid a backstab or to make it whiff as a frontstab – but no, no one know when to dodge in that 15 second window to avoid getting backstabbed with consistency.
It’s a general problem of short stealths being good for the game, but long stealths being toxic – the former has counterplay, the latter does not.
Well, if the thief was low health or had plenty of condis on him, then he will likely use the full length of SR, depending on the opponents health, if it’s low, then he will try to backstab earlier.
BP + HS: If you stood in his red circle he will be stealthed for 3s, if you didn’t then it’s ~7s
Just saying.
But yes, if BS were increased significantly then it might be a problem and with that I don’t mean a true 1 vs 1 but thieves camping in SR and backstabbing passersby.
Unlike other really heavy hitting skills, backstab doesn’t have a telegraph – it, in fact, can have literally 0 telegraph. Without any counterplay or even the ability to dodge it, it necessarily can only hit so hard before becoming a really toxic skill.
I agree that it doesn’t exactly scare opponents that have put in some effort to tank up, but I’d be really wary of pushing it any further due to how it performs in Bronzodia; I’d rather see power elsewhere in the kit, if it is needed.
People who know how to play know when to dodge a backstab. Sounds as if I’m saying “L2P” not really meant like this, just that good players know when to dodge.
I disagree that it should be buffed cause in that case any thief would one shot any other thief – I really thought we’ve had this, guys
If BS were buffed we’d just shift the problems.
Why has the usual camera been changed again from “the cursor always in the middle”?
No offense but playing with this ever changing camera is really exhausting. I’m not interested in the Action camera or first person view but the usual camera is changed nearly every week and I’m tired of adjusting my mouse which always takes me a few hours or days and some changes I just can’t buffer anymore.
Yes thief is at the worst it has ever been.
Daredevil might bring some survivablity back, but vanilla thief, especially not D/P, is a joke. I should’ve been more interested in other classes to know whether or not all their traits were merged into a few or if there too stuff got deleted.
fair enough. I generally try to avoid making absolute statements though. just in case.
Umm.. didn’t you make an absolute statement by claiming that thief has been worse in the past?
more or less. I mean, we’ve had a few slight buffs to P/P and stuff.
If you’re talking about P/P, then yeah – a P/P thief has been worse before – thief as a class hasn’t been though
Not really, individual RNG variances for all those people were pretty much irrelevant considering how many players contributed to the TP prices.
RNG is a problem when it is applied to a single person. When its effects can be averaged throughout tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of players, the end results become highly predictable and reliable.Lucky, unlucky streaks of players did not impact the tp prices in any visible way.
So, in the end, we had the RNG way and the dependable, but grindy way. What we expected was difficult but dependable way based on gameplay challenges. What HoT introduced instead, was even more grindy way with RNG elements.
No wonder players are disappointed.
Of course it depended on RNG – not such much on the RNG for people running around and killing stuff but on the RNG of the people who put yellow and exotic weapons into the MF – as if the RNG was too bad they wouldn’t do it again. And I’m pretty sure that for the more popular weapons a lot of people used the MF.
I hope developers read what people have to say.
I also hear what my mother has to say. She doesn’t hold her breath though.
I stopped reading when you started complaining about heartseaker spam.
+1
so theif’s not at the worst it’s ever been overall, but by comparison, it sure doesn’t feel like it’s in a great place…
When was thief worse than now?
Edit: Or do you mean with HoT thief is better than how it’s been from June to HoT?
(edited by Jana.6831)
But I love it when people say “Some DE guys at keep” (cause that’s the abbreviation, right?) When we’re against 2 German servers.
But honestly, yesterday I said: “WC ~15 BB, RI Lord ~1 min” Who’s going to understand this?
Anyway; The name plates never have been a problem for me, for whatever reason.
support this. My boyfriend won’t play his guardian in WvW at all anymore since he hit platinum, and that was one of his favorite classes.
Ranks are account shared since April 2014.
Edit: Posting seems to be a science for me today.
