Thief will get buffs again.
Just quoting this part for a question: “again” compared to WHEN?
This class NEVER had any buff. Never. Ever. In. 3. Years. Since. Release.
They had one in May or June 2014 – Dagger mainhand only hit one target before.
And some small buffs here and there, like the 200 millisecond evade increase of death blossom.
@ OP, I’m with you, it annoys me in jumping puzzles and I too stand still and wait until it has worn off.
You can get away with playing zerker in core game, but in Hot content you are severely holding back your thief by playing it as a fragile assassin when is obvios that they have evolved into kungkittenmonks now xD
(seriously anet? I cant say the martial art name without being sensured by chat filter?)
See that is how they think all players in this game are. “Oh something else is faceroll OP, ok, then I’ll play that”.

" Once every quarter, we’ll release a new, major balance update to shake up the meta for the next quarter."
I’m not like that, my friends are not like that – it’s really hard to get used to a class to be able to play it in “high competive pvp/wvw” switching every quarter makes no sense but that depends on how anet will manage that if they make the flavour of the quarter class faceroll OP, then things might work out – but I’m pretty sure a lot of people won’t be happy. And then they think they can get the people back with another class/expansion while all they wanted was balance and bug fixes. But alas, maybe I’m wrong.
ETA: If you read a bit earlier in that link you’ll read that they apperantly don’t intend to balance anymore.
There was always a non-RNG way to get the items, and that was grinding gold and buying it. (like with too many items in this game).
No, you were still dependend on the RNG and work of those selling these precursers.
I’m just having a heated discussion with a friend who’s currently really mad at this game as there’s no balance (he doesn’t main thief).
He thinks Shiro should’ve been thief’s elite and I agree and maybe it even was planned like that but people wanted to have a new class.
The problem with that: We had and have a traitline dedicated to evades which was maimed to create daredevil. A thief with now daredevil, staff? and acrobatics has got a nearly neverending supply of evades and dodges. At some point they will have to nerf that if they’re serious about esports- but with that either the whole daredevil line won’t work anymore = the elite, or acrobatics is completely dead.
So maybe they should just rework the whole acrobatics traitline and make a sustain line out of it.
Edit: Non Hot owners won’t be able to play S/D though, but they currently can’t anyway.
Edit²: Or maybe they can if the sustain line is really good and with daredevil they then get the option to have a “completely” evasive playstyle.

Truly depends but in zergs venom share is alright open PvE well you set your difficulties anything can still work.
I don’t use venomshare but I know I do a lot in zergs – but still I’m lucky to survive most of the time – and I’ve been running with zergs (with a break of half a year) for 2 years – someone new won’t have much fun in zergs.
Just wanted to add to my previous post. The best players in wvw are solo roamers (I currently don’t count myself to that btw – I wrote that in my signature so people don’t assume I’m talking about pvp as I always forget to add where I’m coming from) – the best gvg gild behaves “surprise” like solo roamers in a bunch – they have each other’s back but they are pretty much independend.
ETA: SO In pvp you can rely on your team, in wvw you might – I hope you get what I mean. You can survive while others heal you and whatnot but you and your server will be more successful if you’re able to care for yourself.
ETA²: Same goes for pvp but in wvw it’s not about capping points but killing each other (and then cap points for supply and some loot – oh and nodes). The thing that kills me in pvp is that everything is so small – it’s easier to evade dodge and whatnot in wvw.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Anything works in WvW and PvE.
Depends on what you’re doing – if running with a zerg, well, good luck but you can do a lot of damage. If you’re the +1 you might be helpful. 1 vs 1? forget it.
In PvE I use DA, CS, T and have troubles with conditions pretty often. That might be different if I had a really good party to do dungeons and fractals but I haven’t. So I change from DA to SA in fraktals and hope for the best in some dungeons.
ETA: You can run away in pvp as that is basically “your role” and you have 4 people who have your back – in wvw you don’t.
I don’t want HoT, I want my thief back.
Drawing attention to it will just cause them to nerf it to be in line with all the other croptastic trait lines we have.
RIP pve thief if they touch critical strikes grandmasters.
+1

To quote someone you need the first part of the quote [ quote = number; name ] and the [ /quote ]
Otherwise it’s just a potpourri of quotes.
You could as well say: Play another class if you want to win – stop sticking to the things you love.
Maybe staff isn’t for everyone.
Nearly poetic!
I do wonder what
We seem to currently have a lower ceiling than other builds.
means though.
ETA: on topic
If you stick to thief you’ll do fine with a little practice in pve, but never expect to be able to 1 vs 1 anyone, even in wvw (don’t know about staff though).
I abandoned my first main (ranger 2 years ago when they were a bit weaker) because I felt I couldn’t make him work as my other 2 toons did things more effectively and I had absolutely no clue about them – that was in pve though (yes, I was a noob).
So in the end: Thief is really weak right now, if you’re okay with that stick to it, if you’re tired of losing roll any other class.

Which go down faster?
Depends on the siege you use.
With cata/treb (both): Wall
With ram: Gate, wall won’t go down at all.
You can also try a Mortar and Balli but that will take even longer and not sure if you really want to try that. You trying to increase post counts?
And that means what? That I’m stupid because I answered your question – alright.
Edit: In case you didn’t get my answer at all: with the appropriate Siege both go down at the same time.

Not exactly related but certainly in the same vein is the central event. It seems it was an event designed for roamers but if a server shows up with 50 people they will always win. What’s the point?
The bigger number of people will always win this event as you have to run to the mob, kill it and then run to the npc to hand the core in. Every group bigger than the other will automatically win.
I did this event alone today and I had a shot to make it in time, had 6 cores brought in, was at ~9% of the event done and still had 50 mins left on the clock. Then the mob I wanted to kill pretended to be a GS warrior and rushed away, I ran after him, than he rushed the other direction and so on until he reset. That was the point where I thought “I refuse to do this event – I will never attempt to do it again – let them destroy our gate with lasers I DON’T CARE!”
On Topic:
I agree with a lot of what has been said – human interaction would be nice but I still haven’t figured out what I’d like to see.

One never got many badges from taking camps – I think wvw wasn’t nerfed at all concerning badge drop rates, EotM was.
I don’t really have any confidence in arenanet buffing d/d. They don’t seem to care if multiple weapon sets aren’t viable as long as there is one viable one. Never mind it’s easy as hell to buff just the under performing weapon sets without affecting overall game balance.
Yes, you’re right, they’ll probably tweak staff a bit, buff D/P a bit and also S/D to not lose someone I called “Canary bird of GW2 thief” today – as long as he’s there there’s hope (at least for me).
And that’s probably a huge mistake from their part – wouldn’t it be more fun if all weaponsets were viable? You’d have ~5 different specs per class instead of now 1-3 so it would be a lot more challenging to learn to counter all of that. But maybe that’s too little faceroll.
I’m just as stupid as you playing d/d. It’s sad, I can barely afford to stay in a fight long enough to CnD in melee, let alone having it actually connect.
Yay, someone who suffers with me
Even defeating the noobiest ranger feels like a gigantic success.
Anyway, what I forgot to say in my last post: It might as well be that my thief will stay dead even after the next balance patch, then it’s another 1/4 to 1/2 years to hope – and that is really hard to be honest. I’d rather have some minor tweaks here and there and things not settled but “This seems off, we try to nerf/buff it, lets see how it goes, if it’s too weak we’ll buff it again, if it’s too strong, we’ll nerf it.” Rather a constant flow than “shake to the core” – I get that this is exciting to a lot of people who also like to play always different classes, but most people I know stick to their main.
Yes, it sounds as if it’s meant to make classes OP and other classes Up just for the sake of “an interesting core shake”.
And I agree that the elites need to somewhat settle a bit.
But I disagree on how things have been handeled since June. More frequent balance patches would’ve been needed as from my point of view that what has happened is that we’ve had a massive power creep which is only survived by those who have enough invulnerabilities = less skill needed. It’s ok when this happens but it’s not ok to leave it in game for that long so people get used to it.
My poor D/D thief has been completely and utterly destroyed in June, so he will be dead for half a year when the next balance patch hits. Not sure if enough people are as stupid as me and stick around for that long. Balance is the core of competitive play.
(From 4th row) 15 mins Malchor’s Leap and the giant eye was a drop, not from the map rewards thingy.
Seems as if thief got a massive stealth buff!
Coffee is proven to improve exotic drop rate by 17.43%, but only for 2nd, 5th and 9th thief (I don’t have more than 9 to test further). I suppose, the pigmentation in coffee improves the abyss performance for the thief class.
Kitten, I screwed up, my 2 and 5 thief are both salads and they are able to degrade caffeine..
Perhaps we could test this together, I have a private room in guild TS and the finest Italian coffee ready. Yes, I asked you for a date, don’t be shy.
If I didn’t hate TS and if my first thief made any sense in this test I’d say yes.
Yes, I do mean only making the crafted ones account-bound. All existing precursors and all future precursors found through the MF and drops would continue to remain trade-able.
Maybe that’s technically impossible, to have the same item which are both needed for further crafting but one is and the other isn’t accountbound. Also how should the MF notice that its legendary came out of a non tradable precurser and is therefore also non tradeable?
A rise in cost for less-expensive precursors and a reduction in cost for more-expensive precursors would not be a bad thing. Having the crafted stuff be account-bound and only do-able once per account would still require you to invest in the TP to get additional weapons, but for some of the precursors right now it is unreasonable to craft them versus simply buying them because of the cost disparity.
It would as no one buys that things anyway, so their price doesn’t really matter.
What additional weapons do you need?
Like I said in another thread; the prices of precursers will rise again and since that is man made I wouldn’t base my argumentation on “but the TP is cheaper” as that will change.
They should have left it at craft your precursor and not tried to dress it up as a Journey/Story. It’s the expectation a player has that has been built up by Anet leading up to the expansion. I can understand the difficulty in adjusting something that’s already live but the legendary “journeys” were not! The end product yes. but the crafting of precursor is new. That’s the missed opportunity.
With that you’re right, but they had HoT coming out and we still know only 3 of the new legendaries and personally I’m most excited about the dagger – disappointment on that but I can understand that they had a lot of other things to do. And the same goes for the 20 already existing precursers – I guess it’s really hard to invent stories afterwards and I bet you’d have several threads from roleplayers in which they complain about the way the story their precurser/legendary has taken because they had a completely different story.
Being able to craft existing precursers was a compromise, they could as well have said “you can only craft the precursers 2.0” imagine that outrage. There was no way to solve this so everybody would be happy.
A lot of the issues could have been fixed by making both the crafted precursor and the legendaries made from them account bound. You would still only be able to make one, they could have somewhat reduced requirements, and it wouldn’t really crash the market since people will still want other legendaries. They could have also made the crafted precursors not count towards the Legendary collection achievements.
Yes, they want other legendaries but already have precurser x which is now accountbound – I’m somehow missing the logic as to how they can trade.
Edit: Alright you meant the crafted ones, I guess.
Edit²: With that you’d rise the price of the less popular precursers only, so twilight, dawn, incinerator, bifrost would become super cheap and with that somewhat worthless – not really what a legendary should be.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Now I also believe that the average player does not want Anet to hand them a silver platter with (insert precursor name) on it.
It feels that the legendary weapons have been gated by materials rather than the journey.
Are the new legendaries out yet?
Do they have a jouney or don’t they have one? In case they don’t then I’d be disappointed as well, in case of the first set of precursers I wouldn’t be as it’s really hard to change things that are already live.
Thing is: If this doesn’t involve mats but only fighting some bosses, however hard they might be, then those doing the journey get their precurser “for free” = “handed on a silver platter” as people have grinded for them for a few years now.
The problem of sd is not the extra dodge, with DD trait , dodge is pretty good.
the most important things is damage.
not only Larcenous Strike, even sword#1 is bad.
sd is better than dd, but dp eat all of us.
and sizer, I think this is the worst time in his sd’s life
I took the consens from before HoT – so yes with DD S/D has become viable again, probably, i’m still not Hot.
I just checked his twitch yesterday, don’t know which build he’s running, I guess something with DD. He definitively was gone, so I guess the worst time is already behind him.
Jana, drink more coffee.
Always a good advise but don’t ruin my joke!
I believe that almost everyone else would give up their cooldown system for your initiative
I’m a fangirl of a thief who quit long ago. He has been around before it was viable as a D/D thief to use the trickery line = he only had the base amount of initative which is 12 = 2 CnD.
I watched some of these old videos yesterday and wondered why he only did CnD and backstab and not something fancy like death blossom and only occassionally dancing dagger: Because he couldn’t affort anything else. Initative often sounds better than it in reality is, especially with dagger offhand (which seems to miss more often than it hits without evades, blocks or dodges).
You babling about tournaments yet Sizer was s/d and he was on tournaments even though d/p was still the meta. He may stopped playing cuz of all the nerfs, but it doesnt mean this spec is not viable.
He’s back.
The real difference between casual pve and wvw in my opinion is that pve players complain a lot more – but well, that’s my perception.
Let me tell you from my perspective, which means from someone who has been in multiple wvw guilds of highly different skill levels. They (about 33% of the members) complain, they do it often and they do it about pretty much everything. But they don’t do it in chat.
Got you wrong the first time around that’s why I deleted that post, so again:
I’ve been to now 5 servers, one doesn’t count – I’ve also been in TS of a huge guild for some time and most of my friends in this game are wvw players from various servers. Can’t say they complain much. Things go wrong in wvw but we usually bicker for a second and then go on with whatever we’re doing. When I’m losing my temper I yell shortly in chat and log out if it’s really bad. In TS I usually just log out.
I rarely read any complaints about how unrewarding wvw is, I read complaints about coverage a lot, but that’s understandable when one is 5 vs 50, there’s always a reason why the guys in wvw complain but it’s usually only for a second. I didn’t hear anyone complaining about them having to do PvE to build up their guilds – nothing. That not on my server nor from my friends.
ETA: Just realized that I avoid PvE maps, especially farming maps. Although it might have gotten better. Whenever an event fails people are outraged and discuss this endlessly. I’ve once been to a Jormag fight and we were barely 10 people and one guy just stood there and told us it was going to fail anyway and we shouldn’t bother – non stop. Until I told him that we did that with 10 before megaservers were around. And yes, we did it, although we were ~25 during the second phase, but the first was done by us 10. In wvw I would block that guy.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Also, I’ve found that a lot of the better players (especially in WvW) tend to use TeamSpeak and seem to only occasionally glance at chat.
Not me, I hate TS. Also I’m a roamer, TS doesn’t make too much sense – I found that the better servers I’ve been on still cared a lot about map/teamchat.
I’m always farming on one of my 5 thieves and I don’t see any difference between my characters.
Ok, we’re a bunch or weirdos, I guess on that we can all agree.
Most of you play pvp, I guess I might be the only one that plays (only) wvw.
There’s S/D thieves, D/D, Staff, D/P and occassionally a P/D or P/P- we all need different things to make our builds work. So we clashed a lot before and after June but at some point found some consens.
That consens would be: D/D thief needs blind in their traits, S/D needs an extra dodge, P/D needs AoE on their pistols. All thieves need reliable condi removal which currently isn’t given, and I still struggle a lot with immobilize since that isn’t cleared by SE anymore.
Another thing we agreed on after a while is that most if not all classes had a powercreep while thief remained pretty much stagnant.
Also the merge of the traits of other classes meant more invulnerabilities for them which again is bad for every thief.
Also we agreed at some point that almost every thief needs stealth, so revealed skills are really bad – the builds that come by without stealth are staff and S/D.
So we know what is wrong with thief but not how to fix it and that is something anet should do as they should have the knowledge to see how all classes work together and I guess that even the top 0,00001% of players don’t have that knowledge.

(edited by Jana.6831)
You can roam together still, friends and I did that while we were on opposing servers. “Jana, why aren’t you attacking that camp with us?” “Because it’s my servers…”
Anyway, it’s pretty hard not to hit your friend but you can troll the third server while you’re waiting for servers to open up again.
I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the unused, default thief builds getting love but please don’t make dagger daredevil any stronger. One worth its salt already flies around the map, being untouchable and ninja-kicking me in the sac…
See, that’s the problem; before HoT everybody cried to nerf stealth, so all thieves have left is evades and now people start to cry about the evades… sigh
Upon further inspection as of 11/3/2015, I have decided that the Dragon Hunter is a better Ranger than a Ranger “which is funny because the Ranger is now a better Guardian than a Guardian”.
I told my friend who’s a main guard: “If i were still a ranger, I’d roll a Dragon Hunter” he: “But Dragon Hunter is a guard!” me: “Well, he’s a better Ranger than a Ranger.” He wasn’t amused to say the least…
ETA: And btw I pushed perfectly today – I’m a squishy impatient yolo thief and was annoyed by the chickendance of the zerg before and the one behind me, so I pushed into the enemy zerg and right into a DH trap.. that was fun! I do wonder if the “we need more Necros” cries are going to be replaced by “We need more Dragon Rangers!!” Happy pirate ship, guys!
(edited by Jana.6831)
I’m surprised how many people still think anyone from Anet will do anything to help out WvW. They haven’t made a good change that I can remember since they’ve released GW2 in 2012. Good luck getting any sort of replies from them, and if a legendary reply does happen be ready for a solid “We’re working on it”.
That being said, if you’re new to WvW, refer to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezVy-zLUq6g
Yes they neglected wvw for a very long time – but we were good during that time – the npcs and mobs were harder than everywhere else in the game, the condis hit harder, but it worked for us. Then there was the “adopt a dev” “event” and things started to get worse, not neccessarily because of that but it was also a factor. Back when the first changes to wvw were announced no one talked about roamers or small havoc groups – it seemed as if they didn’t exist. The new maps are “roamer friendly” though, so at some point someone listened.
I’m not the biggest fan of a lot of anet’s choices but I’ve been told I’m very fair, so to be fair: The new borderland is a lot like a lot of people on the forums requested.
But the structure of that map isn’t the only thing that’s “wrong” with wvw/this map right now – we need balance overall and that will take time. Everything will become easier when defense and offense have equal chances or will even be able to outskill each other (I know that there are a few guilds out there who still can do that).
so to me a lot of the complaints right now aren’t that thought through – but alas, maybe it’s me.
they could have just made the upgrades free to start instead of completely gutting the entire concept
Here’s a story:
I’ve been on a server with a really huge guild, they were about 1/3 or even half of the wvw population we had.
One day they left. And some guy who was in that guild stayed behind and made us responsible for them leaving so he tried to hurt us in whatever way he could and what is better for that than buying additional guards while we’re being attacked (by said guild who transferred to the enemy server mid matchup).
You all seem to be on perfect servers who always upgraded everything and defended every T3 structure. In my experience it was always a few who cared for the defending side, so I’m kind of baffled that that many people complain about auto upgrades.
Also defending had become more and more pointless before Hot, due to power creep, range increases, camera changes, golem mastery and so on. That has becomen better so maybe with the increased defense a paid manual upgrade would work. Maybe some of these changes should have been gradually to see how things work out.
it is now so bad i just turn off map chat to avoid the spam.
It was horrendous, not sure if players are just plain lazy/thick to even look on the mini map (yellow wagon wheel looking icon), or the top right corner of their screen (which points to them), but when you see this every day – during peak times when i’m either gathering or doing the same dailies….
It gets annoying to say the least
I guess that’s from people who just came to the map – I always need to force myself not to ask what is up at towers with crosses when I come to wvw. The why: Maybe it has been said 10 times before and people would be more than annoyed to explain it another time.
I’ve never encountered real hostility in this game, no matter which game mode (I don’t play pvp often though) – only after the introduction of megaservers people acted like gigantic kitten as they hadn’t had to be afraid to be “thrown out of the community” anymore (sounds silly but that really was a factor before) – but that settled soon(ish) afterwards.
The real difference between casual pve and wvw in my opinion is that pve players complain a lot more – but well, that’s my perception.
And btw I help anyone, no matter the game mode – I guided people to orr x² times, I explained wvw to new players y² times – guess you had some bad luck =)
Seriously are u serious? The biggest threat ive encountered so far in pvp is THIEF! jesus christ some ppl.
So you’re new to pvp/this game then?
Getting healthy!
Worst for me was “Ahh, that’s refreshing” from female characters. That’s why I hadn’t had female characters as long as I had my sound on.
ETA: Which led to everybody believing I was a guy which led to a major meltdown of my first guild when they found out I was female after 2 months – they disbanded..
I can outrun a centaur!
On a serious note, there should be an audio option to turn off all character voice overs.
There is, the only thing I have on is “Effects Volume” I hear “Uggh mjeiiaa” from my thief and “cling clung” from his daggers but that’s pretty much it.
ETA: So I guess if you turn down “Dialog Volume” you should be good – but you won’t hear any character, no npcs, no players..
I don’t miss him at all. I play him more than my warrior and wear broken chest armor as a fashion statement. Just because he’s underdog doesnt mean hes not fun.
That, however, doesn’t mean he should stay underdog. Bitter sarcasm is part of my theorycrafting process.
The one fight I found on our Borderland today..
Who in their right mind despises a free lootbag?
Just wanted to say:
The amount of trolling going on on this forum lately is really good – outsiders (and probably devs) won’t get it, but I love it.
Only when you’ve lost everything you’re free to do anything, right?
So, thanks for the laughs I’m having while reading your insanity.
Azure, say, do you miss your thief?
You seem a bit out of con troll lately
I understand this completely, but it’s exactly why I listed the precursors and their costs like I did. Even factoring in the reduced cost for one-handed and underwater weapons it still costs considerably more to craft them than to buy them outright.
There is a chance that it also costs considerably more for some of the two-handed weapons too, but we’ll see what that ends up being when more comprehensive lists start popping up.
It’s not that hard to understand, is it?
Precurser prices dropped once HoT was announced – significantly. Then they slowly rose again and I think shortly before HoT they dropped again. The precursers you see on the TP have been very likely there for quite some time and getting them out costs a bit. So in a few months the precursers on the TP will be as expensive as the journey is.
ETA: Apart from underwater weapons probably as there’s only a few who are insane enough to craft the legendaries (like me).
