On Botting and What We’re Doing About It

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I cant help but feel, if it was just a quick easy fix, that the problem wouldnt exist and wouldnt be as wide spread throughout mmo’s as it is.
I think the botters are a little more savy than you give them credit for.

This is what people don’t seem to understand.

There’s a reason that all MMOs suffer from botting, and it’s not because they are all too lazy to fix it.

Teams - How to Find Them

What do you want a team for?

Keep in mind that groups do 3 things in this game.

1. Adds blue dots to your minimap.
2. Adds health bars to the left of your screen.
3. Adds a new chat channel.

Loot, xp, buff availability, etc is exactly the same whether you are grouped or ungrouped.

I may be allowed, but, instead of getting 3k exp for the event, now i get 500 exp, and its still dropping. relogging does nothing.

Then try doing more than just one single event over and over.

Go somewhere where 2-3 DEs spawn. Go to a different map in the same level bracket.

The Pet-less Ranger

Firstly, I agree with the addition of perma-stow, no need to try to sell it to me any further.

Secondly, if you are constantly using the pet in slot 2 did you ever consider putting it in slot 1 instead? It wouldn’t stop it unstowing from fall damage, etc but at least the pet that you actually use would come out instead of the bear.

:edit:

To be clear, I am in no way claiming that there are no issues with pets or rangers in general. I agree that it should remember which pet you had out, I agree that out of combat pet switching should have no cooldown (especially until they add a way to check pet stats / abilities without changing the active pet), and pretty much all the other issues which you have brought up.

Every class but Warrior nerfed

Just thought I’d cross link this image from the warrior thread.

https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/11247/lol_warriors.jpg

150k.

No other class can do that in a single ability with a less than 10s cooldown.

This picture is a fake.
Hundred Blades is a channeled ability and each hit does slightly more damage than the previous. And the previous hit on the screenshot was 10k. No way the last hit would do 150k…

While I’ve not used that specific ability, every other channeled ability I have used shows cumulative damage, not a spam of numbers for each hit.

Is Hundred Blades different to the other channeled abilities?

So that mods don’t have to police the images.

You have a good point there. But, do you not think that this should be possible in some manner?

I think both forum sigs and avatars should allow images.

Sadly though, it’s not my call.

There have been many threads about images on the forum, ANet have stood by their decision in every one. I don’t expect it to change.

Early nerfs, especially those affecting PvE for PvP, will kill this game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jestunhi.7429

Jestunhi.7429

There’s nothing wrong with nerfs (or boosts) as long as they improve balance.

Balance will always need tweaking, nerfs are a vital part of this.

If you have 1 class which is too strong then it’s considerably harder to boost all the other classes up by enough to both make them even with the OP class and remain balanced against each other. It makes sense to nerf the OP class down to the others.

It’s nerfs which decrease balance that are a bad thing.

Arena Net posted in another thread about this and said:

“I’ve seen a lot of topics on this both here and externally so let me try and address it. The current FOV is going to stay because increasing it, while having some benefits for some players, has too many drawbacks.

1) performance suffers greatly because of how things are built and view distances

2) art suffers because of texture tiling, LOD problems and just general stretching from the fisheye effect.

3) gameplay suffers because positional awareness becomes less necessary in a game where combat is greatly designed around positioning.

There is a a serious camera problem, however, which is making some players nauseous. We believe a large number of these cases are not FOV related but rather due to bugs in camera smoothing. Because of this we are expediting a quick fix to this issue that is currently in testing and should see the light of day in the next build we do.

Jon"

taken from thread “Camera and FOV (field of view)”

I’d love to have an option added in the graphics section to change the FoV to something like 80-90 maybe 95. The FoV really bothers me at its current setting it just doesn’t feel right to me.

Well, as long as they stand by their word I’ll be happy.

But if they cave to the vocal minority I won’t be.

Help me identify colors/dyes

in Players Helping Players

Jestunhi.7429

There’s a really neat tool that will tell you what GW2 dye matches a particular color:
http://pendiongaming.com/gw2/dyesearch.php?h=f81e34

You can upload an image and get matches from the main colors in it, so a downsized screenshot might work. Lighting is definitely an issue though – it can throw the colors off because there are so many different shades. It also doesn’t take into account how some dyes affect the shaders, so it will get you in the ball park colorwise, but not necessarily get you to the exact dye someone used.

If you notice someone looking particularly spiffy, your best path is to ask them what they have on.

Interesting… how well does it deal with the fact that the same dye on different materials is displayed as a different colour?

A change being required and the game engine needing a re-write are 2 very different things…

And while dueling is technically PvP, it’s also 100% consensual PvP, not forced on helpless PvErs

And there’s the fallacy.

We do not want to play “a part” of a class. We recognize it’s only a part right now.

So it’s not part of a class, it’s part of the current class? Right…

That’s why most of us talking about it are not playing Rangers.
This topic is asking for Rangers to be changed so it’s NOT just ‘a part’.

You ASSUMED we were already playing the class, and just wanted the pet removed (or some half kitten change like that).

I accused you of currently playing a ranger? Where?

You’re just a stick-in-the-mud whose bringing nothing to this discussion but negativity and stagnation.

Ah, it’s a thread for only people who agree with you then? Not a balanced discussion, but a propaganda piece. My bad.

This discussion isn’t about the current state of the Ranger. It’s about the future, and the future ain’t set in stone like your posts seem to imply.

It’s not a discussion. It’s an advert. No one can disagree, or they are being “negative”.

To add another point to the argument.

Do Ranger NPCs always have pets fighting by their side?

Hell no. Thus – The pet is not a fundamental part of the Ranger profession.
This confirms that pets being mandatory is merely an oversight on ANet’s part, and something for them to work on in the future.

Or, they can go adding pets to every single Ranger NPC… Pffft.

Do ranger NPCs get a damage boost for not having pets? Can you prove this? If not, what’s your point?

Wrong. To implement a duelling system in a game world that is 100% pve centric would mean a redesign of the game engine. If you want pvp, then head to the pvp zones.

Besides, Arenanet have said since the game was announced and all through gw1 that they have no intentions of allowing pvp in the pve game world. Thats why they designed a huge Pvp system that is separate from the regular game.

Actually, we are.

Your advice is like telling a Mesmer player who doesn’t like illusions to never cast or use clone/phantasm skills/traits.

As gamers, we CANNOT do that – It would mean giving ourselves a handicap and no one wants to do that. We can’t simply ignore a mechanic that is integral to the profession’s gameplay.

Letting the pet die is NOT a solution. It’s a statement of apathy.

We want an pet-less Ranger who can play at optimal levels comparatively to the current Ranger with a pet.
Letting the pet die would not achieve this.

Of course you would be handicapping yourself.

You want to play part of a class. Your choice.

If I liked Warriors but wanted only weapon skills and never to use utilities, should my weapon skill damage be boosted to compensate?

Lets take it even further, if I only wanted to use some kind of from-stealth attack, should it be boosted excessively to account for the other 9 ability slots which I am not using?

I work in the software industry. In many cases it is.
But then, I don’t work in the games industry so we can’t deliver code as unfinished as how many games are released.

As am I, which is why I know how complex it can be.

What I meant to imply is that it’s not as easy as removing the line “BuggedContent = 1”. And even if it is a single line it could be buried somewhere in thousands of lines of code.

I expect a newly released MMO to be buggy. They almost all are (and usually when someone claims that’s not the case it’s due to rose-tinted glasses and other players of the same game disagree with them).

I don’t judge an MMO based on the first month. And anyone who does had better be rich, because I suspect they will just continually buy new MMOs, play for a month, quit because it’s not perfect, and then buy the next one.

in Players Helping Players

Jestunhi.7429

^This. And that’s basically what’s going to happen.

ANet has already acknowledged there are camera issues which can affect players, and they are working on them. They’ve also explicitly stated the reason for the FOV the game uses, and it will not change. So what’s the point of this thread? What’s the reason to continually bring this up. Asked and answered by ANet.

I think some of you want this game to fail. You are looking for any reason to yell “game-breaking”. This FOV complaint is a new one. ANet shouldn’t even acknowledge it, because its ridiculous. The funny thing is, one person starts a thread on this, and then a bunch of you jump on the bandwagon saying “oh yeah, I feel claustrophobic from the narrow FOV. I’m throwing up when I play.”

You’re credibility is lost. You’re finding things to complain about, and its becoming laughable. Go run home to your kitten. It needs a hug.

FYI I got “infracted” for daring to question the validity of some of the ridiculous claims which were made about the effects of the current FoV.

It was in a thread where it was implied that increasing FoV fixes brightness / contrast, fixes the colour balance, makes the UI clearer and does all kinds of remarkable things.

You can’t see around corners by changing the FoV

Of course you can. Do you know what FoV is?

I’m sure people will say, Anet aren’t budging so why keep flogging this, either find a workaround (if you can) or move on to another game. Well, sorry, but the only way to get companies to make improvements to their products when they are causing genuine issues is to keep campaigning and point out why it doesn’t make sense for them to be so stubborn. So let’s put it in financial terms, which is all most companies care about. The bottom line is Anet will lose customers over this. Enough to hurt them? Almost certainly not, they’ve sold a huge number of boxes anyway. But why cut off any revenue stream if you don’t have to? People aren’t making unreasonable requests, people aren’t being entitled whiners, they are just asking a games company to be a bit flexible and find a solution to some genuine problems their game is causing.

Yeah… And I’m sure people allergic to lemons would insist that removing lemons from lemon tarts is an “improvement”. They can complain that the lemon is causing genuine issues.

Doesn’t mean that it’s actually an improvement to remove them.

I also wish there were a way to forgo the pet. I love the idea of a dedicated “archer” play-style, the 5-skill ‘Barrage’ on the long-bow is exactly the sort of thing I want.
But the prospect of managing a pet puts me off from trying.

For those of you who can’t wrap your head around why we don’t want the pet

  • It’s because it feels like our character isn’t independent.
We want to feel independent and able to hold our own without the help of some beast. We want that lone-archer feeling as if we’re the Green Arrow and epic —-- like that.
  • We’re used to playing without a pet on classes like Thief, Warrior, etc.. Why shouldn’t we be allowed to play as a pet-less Ranger?
Being allowed to do so wouldn’t make the class any less unique. It would simply be adding variety to the profession.

And for those of you who think we just like long-ranged mechanics.

You can’t be more wrong.

We want the aesthetics of an ‘Archer’.
The sensation and sound of bowstring being pulled back while aiming at a far off target. The sound an arrow flying out. The sound of ‘Barrage’ with all the arrows falling onto our enemy.
And all that is stuck on the Ranger class, . So please don’t tell us roll something else, there is nothing else. (The warrior’s long bow skills are not nearly as close to what we’re seeking)

And for the people arguing that having a pet is unique to the Ranger.
There are dozens of examples of Ranger-classes in other games without pets.

Please calm your ego down.

You’re not stopped from doing this.

Various suggestions are in this thread, ignore your pet and let it die, select a bird pet and set it to passive, etc.

I read the readme file on github (the most logical thing to do?):

Config / Env
Think of a name that represents your machine / evn, eg ruben-vm1 or gw2spidy-prod-vps2.
Copy the config/cnf/example-custom-cnf.json to config/cnf/<your-chosen-name>.json an edit it to set the values for auth_email and auth_password.

Copy config/cnf/example-env to config/cnf/env and edit it, it contains a line for each config file it should load from config/cnf/<name>.json
Replace the first line (ruben-vm1) with the name you had previously chosen, leave the dev and default, those are other config files it should load too (or change dev to prod if you don’t want debug mode.

The config files you specify config/cnf/env will be loaded (in reverse order), overwriting the previous ones. For overloading other config values (like database login etc.), check config/cnf/default.json for all options which you could also se in your custom config file.

The config/cnf/env and any config/cnf/*.json other then default.json, dev.json and prod.json are on .gitignore so they won’t be versioned controlled

Why I do not play in lower level zones

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Even without an official statement, evidence lends itself to most of the claims being made.

Back in beta, rewards scaled to your level regardless of where you went. You could be 70 in Queensdale and getting 70 rewards. That was changed with release.

I do believe there was an official statement on playing with your friends. I do not believe it would be too difficult to find, if you were truly curious. Or, perhaps it would. It was stated during BWE 1, I think.

What evidence?

Do you have anything to prove one of the following:

1. The system is as intended – downscaled players should be OP enough to not worry about anything.
2. The system is bugged, you shouldn’t be so strong.

Without knowing if the current level of power when downscaled is as intended how can you possibly use that to infer the intention of the downscaling system (as in, whether it’s to let you access content which you missed or to allow you to assist others)?

We’ve gone over this before, the fisheye only appears at extremely high values. Just like at extremely low values it looks like you’re looking through the hubble telescope. Also, even at high values, you don’t notice it during heated play because you’re focused on the middle 1/3 of your screen, the edges are in peripheral vision. If they implement a slider that goes from, say, 65 to 110, everyone is happy.

Perhaps you don’t notice it…

Personally I don’t notice the existing FoV to be an issue, but I wouldn’t claim that no one else notices it just because I don’t.

Does anyone actually have a link to an official statement of what the intention of the downscaling was or are you all just putting your own words into the mouths of the devs?

I’d have no “problems” playing this on an ancient 4:3 CRT, but that’s no reason to not have the best possible experience..

The difference is, I don’t equate gaming with fish-eye effect as being the best possible experience.

Having a duel feature?

WvW / PvP is great if you want to see if you are better than some random guy on a server you have never heard of.

Not so good to see if you can beat your friend / guildie in an even fight. You need duels for that.

Dueling has its place, but unless the game is specifically balanced for 1 vs 1 it’s debatable how worthwhile it is.

I play on 5920 X 1080 on 3 monitors as well and I don’t have any problems…

I play 1920×1080 on 1 monitor and also have no problems.

Sorry chaps, GW1 bored me within minutes – way too much instancing. So yes, I was comparing to the genre rather than a specific game.

I’m torn.

Dueling is a good feature. However, as soon as it’s implemented you get people whining that every setup isn’t balanced 1 vs 1.

And currently there’s no need for them to be, all the forms of PvP are team based, not 1 vs 1.

In GW2 you need to put thought into which abilities & weapons to equip, rather than just putting every single ability that you have on the many quickbars covering your screen.
