The problem with a power bow ranger is it drops like a rock when the fight isn’t going exactly according to plan. It can’t fight outnumbered, and there are too many builds that it has no answer for.

Never had this problem myself. I’ve fought plenty of 1vX fights and survived and it is extremely rare to run into a build that is a hard counter. Regen bunkers were tough until I added poison to my build, some super tanky guardians can still be annoying but it’s not like they are going to be able to kill you so the fight usually ends in a victory or draw.

If you really want to kitten people off just kite them to a spot with water. If you knock them in you can tear them apart with the bow. If the fight isn’t going well just jump in the water where a ranger is almost unkillable in a 1v1 fight due to the downed mechanic.

I’m pretty sure that is just the glow effect. When you create the character you have to toggle the light button to see the glow effect on sylvari

Being Light Armor – although I play with Superior Earth Runes on Toughness armor and have no issues. Mesmers are more against one to 3 targets, not massive AoE, like eles.

Only having one skill for swiftness is tough and that is on a focus. Having Blink just puts you ahead slightly so that is a big problem.

Easy solution to the swiftness problem if you’re playing a power mesmer is to use centaur runes and mirror or mantra of recovery for your heal. You can also trait for mender’s purity to add some pretty decent condition removal to go along with your swiftness.

Axe, great sword, and longbow are getting a nice buff next month. Main hand sword can be tricky but it does solid dps, near perma cripple, and you stick like glue to your target, it pairs well with dagger off hand for a ton of evades and plenty of poison.

Torch is decent for condition builds and offers an 8 second fire field. When traited warhorn can offer near perma swiftness, solid fury uptime and a blast finisher, but its number 4 skill is pretty worthless.

Shortbow was nerfed into the ground and I personally see no reason to take it over the other weapons for any build. Off hand axe is mediocre but again that is just my personal opinion.

The best way to play a ranger is to find what works for you. I play a power ranger which is about as far from a cheese build as you can get, but I also fight dirty as hell. I like to use the terrain to position myself where I can usually kill a person before they can get a hit on me. I will kite people to places where I know I will have the upper hand and if they give up chasing me I turn around and start plugging them with arrows from 1500+ range until they try to fight again or they die. Others like using regen evade spam bunkers, full melee, beastmaster bunkers, etc.

It’s not like playing a war where you can be a terrible player but still be successful by just grabbing a flavor of the month build from the forums. You have to really be on top of your game and create a build that fits your play style.

They are both a lot of fun to play but I prefer my ranger. Rangers are great for scouting, roaming, and picking off a zergs back line. They are also a pretty decent counter to thieves by using rapid fire/reveal. Pets are fine if you don’t expect too much from them. Wolf aoe fear is very handy and I like bringing a marsh drake for their aoe poison, tankiness and blast finisher (especially good with ranger water field).

That being said mesmer brings a lot of utility that a ranger lacks. Port, stealth and time warp are always useful. Also it is hilarious to moa people.

Azyume pretty much nailed it. One thing I would like to add is I prefer plague form for the elite. Add the trait that chills when you blind and you can completely lock another person down.

1-3 people is not a match for a necro, down the weakeset and use him as bait, and actually if you want to be VERY mobile it is totally possible for a necro, ive seen necros run circles around 5-10 people. I run from 3-5 and in the process 1-2 go down from all my marks i turn around and fight the whole group.

As for thiefs being the most mobile, maybe against a bunch of scrubs but I down them nearly every time. All you do as a necro is keep your staff 5 ready when they are getting low HP and you know that refuge is coming, boom reapers mark, they come out instantly and then shroud n fear, spite, gg.

Being able to beat a thief with a necro has nothing to do with their mobility. Necro and engi are pretty much hard counters to thieves, I almost never lose to thieves when playing those professions. My ranger on the other hand probably wins 70% of the time vs thieves but 100% of the time vs necro’s.

Simple, give him a hammer.

Dont listen to the “ow just play condition” brigade, there are people who hate condition builds with a passion and want it nerfed. So theyll take any oppertunity to make it sound brokenly OP.
Its not, its far from it. Most people, including roamers, in wvw play a power build and for good reason.

Just look at the suggestion here, go condition build on thief. P/D has zero chase, if anyone descides to just walk away from you there is really not a lot you can do to stop him.
And conditions dont kill anyone fast enough. Thats why almost all thieves are a power build with mostly d/p. Great burst, great chase, great escape. If you cannot kill it, it cannot kill you. If you can kill it, you will kill it.

Is this a joke? P/d has zero chase? really? Thieves are the most mobile class in the game. You know you can still equip a second weapon set right?

I laugh at people when I’m running solo on my ranger and they are hiding in a upgraded camp or tower, too afraid to come out for a 1-3v1.

I also laugh at every nike warrior that runs from a fight, and troll perplex/stealth thieves when they die.

A good solid fighter not running some completely cheesy build gets a bow. On the few occasions I’ve run into a decent power ranger I’ll bow and leave then in the downed state instead of stomping.

My guild has been recruiting every new player we can find and training them on some of the basics of WvW in order to improve the overall quality of our server. Because of this we are seeing a lot more regulars in WvW and a lot less people making silly mistakes like throwing down a light field when we are trying to stack might.

I’ve now purchased 2 sets of bloodlust sigils for most of my characters, so feel free to send me about a hundred gold or the equivalent in gems since you couldn’t fix this problem.

I would pay real money for a finisher that prevented the player from being hard rezzed so that I didn’t have to babysit dead mesmers for half an hour.

Sometimes. Just like sometimes it will attack on its own even though you set it to passive. It’s probably my fault for naming my drake godzilla but he just loves to attack structures and giving away my position while I’m still building rams.

What a silly statement. In actual combat there is a huge advantage to being able to hit people from 1500 range.

@op, rangers have a place in the zerg, there are certain siege spots that ele’s can’t hit but rangers can. They are also great for picking off glass ele’s in a zergs back line, or Perma stealth thieves harassing a zerg.

Oh and they also have a nice long water and fire field along with being able to give people Perma regen and swiftness, and they have a good amount of soft and hard cc.

If you’re in an organized group being in that range is a death sentence in my mind. It means you can’t move with your group when they peel out of fights, it means that gank forces can easily lock you down and kill you with you having little of escape, and it means you can’t recover with group (ie receiving Water field blast heals).

For pug zergs I guess it’s okay, but in the real deal you don’t want to be more than two dodges from your driver, or else you’ll get picked off rather easily.

Pretty easy to reposition in a power build, all you have to do is stealth and gs leap back to your group if you have too much pressure on you.

You should take your own advice and read not only one post. He said, for his own reasons, that he thinks “hacker”, when he hears “roamer”. He had argued that with his own experience. The only thing I can agree with you on is that “he might not know either” if the other players were hacking or not. The majority of roamers I’ve met are out there looking for good fights. Most of the hackers I’ve seen are looking for ways to win ppt or grief as many people as possible, so they tend to stick to towers/keeps/zergs. I’m not saying that you won’t ever see a hacker roaming but the amount of hackers roaming is nowhere near the numbers that the op is implying.

I don’t understand the question, it sounds like you know what you want to do so go do it.

If updating tool tips every couple months is tying up so much of their time that they can’t respond then the WvW team must consist of 1 part time intern.

I said in my very first post in this thread that we all know there are hackers in this game. What you are not showing is someone hacking while roaming. I’m sure there are a few people that do use hacks while roaming but I guarantee it isn’t “1 in 30” people.

The more you type the more I am convinced that you are a bad player that wrongly reports people for hacking when they outplay you.

I’ve taken out plenty of P/D perplex thieves so it’s definitely not impossible to win, it’s usually just not really worth it to fight them. If I don’t kill them in the first 30 seconds I just go into the nearest camp or tower because it’s not fun fighting someone that lays conditions on you, disappears, and resets the fight any time they are in danger. I love fights that drag out but what they are doing isn’t fighting.

Those 3 infractions I got means someone at least looked at this thread. How about a response? Is it really so hard to say if this is a bug or if it’s working as intended?

Because it wasn’t relevant. Yes a warrior can spec to be faster than a ranger, maybe this one wasn’t though. Just because a ranger outran 2 players doesn’t mean he was hacking, I outran 6 yesterday which included thieves and warriors.

Because I am a roamer. I’ve been accused of hacking on several occasions because clearly that is the only way a ranger can beat people 1vX. Just because someone handed you your kitten doesn’t mean they were hacking.

Ranger is incredibly fun for roaming. You’ll see a lot of evade bunker regen rangers but I prefer power ranger. Most people are dead before they can get in spitting distance and camps easily flip in under a minute. With the upcoming changes they are going to be devastating as roamers.

If you are winning 1v1 less than 30% of the time on a necro it really is a learn to play issue. I main a ranger and outrun people all the time. Perma swiftness and leaps make that pretty easy to do.(and he outran a mesmer? Really? Like this is hard for a ranger to do?)
I switch to my necro when I’m tired and playing sloppy because it is easy mode compared to my ranger.
