I think story mode dungeons should be -more- rewarding than explorable. The only catch is each character can only “lead” a party in there (be the cutscene person) once, that way hardcore dungeoners will more willingly assist people that just reached appropriate level to do the dungeon, and will only run explorable to kill time when there is no one who can run story mode.

This is actually already currently the case. I got the shiny star and still was missing zones on my map (jumping puzzles mainly). Going back to clear all those now.

Why would something easy reward you better than something harder? Besides, what reward at level 30 (AC) could be better than tokens for 80 lvl exotics?

Oh, also because you can only run it ONCE per character as lead. This will encourage people to help out others to re-enter story mode. I can’t really see people churning out alts (to lev 30 no less) simply to be able to get their guildies into AC story once their mains have completed it to have an “easier” time.

My main complaint about the wvw exploration is that the three borderland zones are pretty much identical apart from the skill challenges (combat, commune and consume cycle spots). Felt very redundant hitting the same spots over and over.

Brightside, you only need to do it once!

I did it all of it in 2 days. Simple trick: Join the winning side.

This is more a question for anyone here: what is an “AMA”? :/

Anywho, if we can put questions to this guy sure, here are some I’d like answered:
1 – Are there any plans to run any more one time events?
2 – If so are the crew considering running each of them for different timezones? Like, maybe the next one should run for Oceania time so other people (namely the ones who got to participate in the previous one-time event) get to “get the chance to identify what’s important to them” – participation or sleeping/working etc
3 – Can we delete items from the Investigation stages of Lost Shores and Halloween now?
4 – Any plans on making respawn times in WvW only possible once per score calculation to actually have a semblance of requirement for tactics instead of just a steady stream of who has the most people?
5 – Can we expect more tiers of items to “bridge” the gap to legendary or beyond?
6 – Thoughts on open world dungeons (zone for everyone) and adding more mini-ones?
7 – Are there plans for new ascended pieces to randomly drop from overland PvE zones?
8 – How are you reworking the old dungeons to become more attractive to run again? Especially story mode.

My main gripe with GW1 was it was instanced everything almost. Running in small groups is ok, but you know what’s better? Meeting random people out on the field. Same reason why the current dungeons here are ok, but still stifflingly limited.

Given that I like mini-dungeons so much I just thought having a “dungeon” zone instance where players can flood in (not just in a single party) would probably trump the current available places for me.

Nothing wrong with the instanced stuff, just thought it would be more accessible this way. The mobs inside can still be ludicrously tough or numerous if you like! And you can continue to have your dynamic events happen in there too. :P

Hi Syn, yup I just roam and help other players explore in the zones I wander. Not very rewarding monetary wise though. Obviously varies on the zone but zombie land gets stale after awhile.

Umm yeah I use Omnomberry bars and farm up north by HoTW or Orr events or just do exploratory dungeons. Take that money buy 4 rare Items of the same type and Mystic forge them get an exotic and sale it.

I spend about 2 hours farming between each location and come out with around 10 gold, then I hit up usually CoF all three paths and make around 5 gold spend 1.5 gold on rares and forge 2 out of 10 times I get a Exotic sale it for 5 gold min up to 50 gold. I can do all this in about 3 hours of playing. at the end of the day I make around
(not including forge ) 15 gold a day.

I usually spend a lil more time on farming but I posted the minimal time I put in and usually come out around 50 to 65 gold a day

Or look it is a red circle with a cottage above it step 5 feet back AoE the area. as he can’t step out side the area.

Hehe not entirely true this one, since I like turning on my second invis then run from the circle or use steal + longreach to get right beside whoever I was hiding from. :P

Hi Devteam! Just wanted to show interest and support in you adding more mini-dungeons. Don’t get me wrong, I like your other content too:

Main Dungeons are pretty good if you have enough people and time to run them.
Jumping Puzzles are fun for a solo skill challenge.

Mini dungeons are a happy in between of not really needing that many people, or as much time to run – and still promotes coop participation (unlike JPs). Wandered into Sector Zuhl last night and beat up the giant troll on my own. Challenging – yes. Fun – yes.

Then I went to the dwarven ruins at Dredgehaunt Cliffs, cracked it open and soon found myself in a world of hurt for trying it solo (ressing the npc while keeping the fires going and evading traps is tough!). My brother then happened to log on and it then became a really fun and comparatively quick adventure for the two of us – way more than me endlessly kiting the silly troll earlier.

Furthermore, unlike big dungeon runs, I am quite happy to redo that and things like that since I don’t have to devote a huge chunk of time to complete them. Just sharing my thoughts!

There isn’t. Just because they’re invis doesn’t put them on god-mode. AoE your best guess location – facing a d/d thief that usually means target yourself. If that’s on cooldown, spam a directional attack.

Interesting site, hopefully something similar is built in-game though because I never use anything outside the game when playing. Same reason I don’t use voicechat. If it was part of the game, then yes sure I’d make use of it – but having to use 3rd party stuff to me for me is wrong.

If it isn’t in the game, I’m not meant to be using it. I hope the developers and testers follow that same motto and don’t just go using vent or 3rd party sites for their testing.

I think it’s to combat cooldown evasion… like…. try a warrior with rifle/rifle. If you had no weapon swap timer does that mean you can just spam:

volley – swap – volley – swap – volley – swap – etc?

That would deck. :P

I agree, but they don’t have to make it easier. All you need to do is not let the monsters in dungeons heal if they lose aggro or go out of range of their leash (actually, just unleash them for solo – if we get camped at the WP tough meowmeow for us) and we can handle the rest.

Henchman stuff sounds good too. Can we use our alts as Henchmen?

I don’t mind summoning pigeons, but yeah – I agree ravens would look cooler. Also, it would be nice if they attacked -everything- around instead of just 3 enemies now, it really tones down the previously awesome scale of the power (very visually impressive in Orr). As an aside, you know that legendary dredge mining suit in the fractals? Guess what can hurt him when he’s not superheated. :P

You won’t need to -beat- the clock if you just want treasure and / or the achievement, but if you want the title you’ll need to race. Ofcourse they’ll need to find a way to keep the mesmer’s gate in check or they (and whoever hops in the gate) will finish in under 1 second.

While I like jump puzzles I think I’d like to see more stuff like “Don’t touch the Shiny” and “Tears of Itoallchaslfj…” [cough] frog temple thing as more of my guild will participate in that instead of gravity induced deaths.

Just re-read what I typed and yeah that doesn’t fix it does it? :P Ok, I need to rework it… Maybe the tweak should be…

You -can- get, buy or build stuff with item 1 (ugly stuff but functional).
You -can- get, buy or build stuff with item 2 (nice looking stuff).
The best stuff you can get is using the combined item (best looking, like… capes or wings or halos or whatever).

Meowmeowmeowkittenmeow. That still won’t work huh?

How the hell does Mabinogi get away with it…. oh yeah. Because all armor is the same in stats, it’s just aesthetics that change. Ok that’s unlikely to happen here so… stumped again.

In Mabi that would actually be viable, because it is so weighted against player (not character) skill that you could enter a tough dungeon at level 2 and defeat everything, provided you (the player) were frickin awesome at combat.

But here, haha yeah, going into FotM under lev 80 is probably gonna hurt.

Because 50% (Item 1) of what they need, -does- come from doing harder stuff. It’s just they have to take a time out to get the other 50% (Item 2) they need and help others (non l33tists) in the process.

Not too complex theory wise. Coding wise probably annoying though.

Let’s take Ascalon Catacombs:
Instead of handing out “Tears of Ascalon” lets make two new collectibles.
Item 1 – “Kaimick’s deadly smile” comes from explorable
Item 2 – “Kaimick’s sharp mind” comes from story mode, and low level total party bonus
Combine Item 1 and Item 2 to make “Tears of Ascalon”?

Ok this is a very rough idea but please bear with me. It’s mainly an attempt to lessen what I’m seeing as community segregation:

LFG AC Lev 80 only
LF2M FotM Lev 80 exotics only etc.

I think there should be two collectable items per dungeon that combined make up the “awesome” reward/or just combined to make a coin which you then spend the normal way. How does this work? Well…

Item 1 – Should be ye old standard go do the hard explorables and high level fractals, and the more you do the more you get, the harder it is – the more rewarding. This is already in place for the most part, and yes the speed running, full exotic wielding lev 80s can hammer these out as they are doing now.

Item 2 – Is much like item 1, however its drop rate is reversed. You get item 2 by running story mode, and you get way more item 2 by running fractals level 1 than fractals level 10. Also, it should take into account the party’s total level, and the lower the level, the more of item 2 is rewarded as a bonus. Even more for each member not using exotics or better.

Both items are account bound. Remember, you need to combine -both- to get, create, or purchase a prize.

Yeah pretty sure it can be made better but at least this way there will be more people to run low level stuff and when they get bored they can cycle back to their speed runs?
What do you think? I’m interested to hear any suggestions and such on this – as I said, it’s very rough.

Hi again Kaimick, strangely not -all- mmo’s have that elitism (Mabinogi comes to mind) but for the most part yeah you’re right. As long as there is never a mandatory need for people to have those items to enjoy new content (other than speed runner elitists and to show off) then I suppose I shouldn’t have a problem with them.

Actually that gives me an idea that I should put in a new post.

Didn’t say I don’t like FoTM. It’s a very pretty and nice dungeon that I want to run, not for the gear but just for the hell of it. Don’t tell me that only gear-grinders can enjoy the new stuff.

Ofcourse when they’ve released the rest of their ascended gear which “will be needed” (according to Anet) for the new challenges they release I have sneaking suspicion it will be like the lines I see currently:

LF2M FoTM Lev80 Full Exotic Only!

Hmm I don’t -have- a single piece of exotic armor, but that’s ok – only like 75% of the groups I see are advertising like that. I can still run it if I’m patient with the other 25% (who also aren’t looking for fractal levels) but when we reach this stage:

LFG -insert new map- Full Ascended Only!
or a new map that simply kills you over time if you have no ascended gear

Well. Then I’ve obviously been mislead about this game. :P

So in short Kaimick, it’s just speculation (and you aren’t simple minded, never sell yourself short!). Just like the speculation that adding FotM before would mean “gearscore” would begin to matter. I don’t mind being wrong (I often am). I’m just afraid of being right.

Probably won’t help you Ace but you -can- ninja if you happen to be running a thief, then shadow refuge + thieves guild / infiltrator’s signet + other moves that make you invis (cloak and dagger, hide) can let you clear the whole of Orr solo.

Drop shadow refuge at the skill points that just need communing, 7 seconds invis is plenty of time – I use it to get guarded treasure chests too. In the water you are almost undefeatable against 1 or 2 enemies at a time if you use spear block and spear #5 (forget the name) properly. Can also pop thieves guild before jumping in the water for some support. Just avoid megalodons. I tried to block that and became a chew toy. :P

In short if you ain’t a thief, maybe bring a thief buddy with you (best chance to recruit one at LA atm I think, you should pay for their TP from Straits to wherever though) – especially for problematic communing places. That shadow refuge can hide anyone for enough time. Just get them to drop thieves guild as bait and rush the skill point and hide, commune. After that just bolt to safety. :P

It might be annoying when you’re trying to do a group event and a bunch of people decide to duel each other instead of helping out. This seriously has happened to me in another game. 3 of us running a tough dungeon, the two idiots decide to fight each other at the bottom floor. Sigh.

Who won? The monsters. Fortunately I didn’t die and managed to res the two fools then get them in-line to finish up the boss.

If this is implemented I would also want the “automatically decline all duels” option and (if that is turned off) I wouldn’t mind a third button or automated feature if some one tries to duel you again if you already said No the first time. The third button should be Gib. It auto-kills the duel requestor in a shower of blood and guts, empties all their money, destroys all their gear (erased, not just “broken”) and resets them to level 1 for being a troll.

Alternative Ideas for One Time Events

Quite a hot topic right now but that’s to be expected if you’re rolling out high level rewards. If you really cannot think of any other ways to get one-time events to play fairly for everyone, let’s see how other places do it:

GW1 – Apparently “One time events” repeat every 3 hours for 24 hours giving people the chance to do it regardless of timezone. Just make it that the account can only do it once.

Mabinogi – New quest lines are given to each player and they can do it whenever they choose, but only once as the lead. Ofcourse you can party up to help others complete their quest lines which (especially in later ones) holds great benefit to the helpers too, encouraging people to help each other. Limited-time quests range from one week to one month, leaving not much room for anyone to say they couldn’t do it.

Ultima Online – Very old school and very GM hands on. On the shard I was helping out on, sure there were one time events for the USA – but at the same time there were one time quest chains happening for other timezones too, all smaller pieces of a bigger picture. C’mon, if we could get it to work here I’m sure you can do something similar.

GW2 Mad King – Hey guess what, it was awesome because it kinda followed GW1. You had ample time to run up the clock tower, explore the labyrinth, pvp in wierd places, beat up (and then dance) with the mad king too! Fun! Sure, some people missed a cutscene but as you saw on the forums, that was quite ok with everyone.

If your team really cannot work a way to do any of the above you can either hire new people (ouch! Just kidding! They are good! Please don’t drop a cow on me! :P) or simply run your subsequent one-time events for different timezones. Yes I know you were catering for your largest concurrency. That’s nice. The problem is if you keep catering to them exclusively then you will continue to not cater for everyone else.

Make the next one on Europe prime-time, then the one after Oceania ([cough] and hand out legendaries on this one [cough] [shifty eyes]), or whatever. I can guarantee we’ll forgive you for running more one time events on your most busy periods as long as the rest of us aren’t forgotten.

No. There are pvp specific maps where you can go pvp. No need for that meowmeowmeow anywhere else.
