You misunderstand, The idea is a proposal. But regardless I am giving my own, I am saying there is no need for us to have yet another skill slot, instead fix the slots and skills we have, our current objective shouldn’t be to add more room for failure to our class but to instead fix the class from within and fix the mechanics that are currently not at optimal standards.

Adding another skill slot does nothing but give us more work an tries to cover up the underlying issue of the class not working at the standards of other classes.

And I’m saying I’m not interfering with that goal. That should be the case period. The Ranger needs to be fixed in a lot of ways. That’s not relevant to other ways the class can be improved or change or added to in general.

Your arguments cause the implication that to have this would take away from fixing the class. When it has nothing to do with that. It’s not like ANet read this thread and went, “Eureka! If we do this we can scrap all the rest of it. Get on that, now.” If they read it at all they would just note it as another Pet related thing and either say consider it as an interesting take on further class improvements to be examined at some time and possibly be worked into things they’re already doing, or ignored because who cares.

It does not impact class fixes. It does not impact current functionality, nor the direction ANet wants to go with the class. It would involve one button, that is right next to a button that you should already be using fairly regularly, so that’s not a huge leap in skill nor effort. Your complaints are not valid, which is beginning to be a trend I’m seeing. Your only valid and reasonable argument is that the same thing could be done without a pet, but since it amounts to the same thing but different it’s more of a nonissue than an argument.

Idea: Dual Active Pets.

Kal Spiro.9745

whats needed are pets reworked to where they actually stay alive long enough for us to use them properly.

Sorry, but these are not mutually exclusive. Having the passive pet would not impact the functionality of the active pet, as such the active pet would still need this if the passive pet existed or not. This statement and any argument related to it has no place in this discussion and is not relevant.

Yes, there are always other ways to do things. This isn’t a proposal, it’s an idea. This is the way I would like to do it if it were to be done at all.

How do these changes affect Hall of Monument skins and skins like Zenith weapons that are currently zero charge to apply? Am I now going to have to spend transmutation charges to apply these?

Somebody posted a screengrab from the video which showed the text “Free to Apply” on a HoM skin.

Likely zenith will be the same, but if not just withdraw a new one instead of transmuting.

Would all skins of that sort work the same way? Like the Dragon Helm, Aether gear, Braham’s gear, and so on? It costs nothing to apply them the first time, but does the system take that into account?

Withdrawing probably won’t be a thing anymore. Rather than having the stockpile of skins we currently have from achievement chests, they will just go straight into our wardrobe. When you double click a skin, rather than bringing up a transmutation window it will just go into your wardrobe. Transmutation windows won’t be a thing anymore.

Ok, so all questions about Transmutations have apparently been funneled into this thread. I’m not going to read through it to try and see if this has come up because it’s already many pages and I don’t know when the merging/funneling occurred.

So my question is: Transmutation Crystals are necessary to transmute level 80 gear. Transmutation Crystals are going to be converted into 3 Transmutation Charges. Will it take 3 charges to transmute skins onto level 80 gear? This goes two ways, one, no it doesn’t so if you bought Crystals you’re getting 3 times the transmutation out of them. Two, yes it does so after the conversion 3 Transmutation Stones will effectively work as 1 Crystal would have, giving us a free/built in upgrade design for them.

Official-New Traits

I have no suggestion on how to make either of those things happen without breaking something else though, which leaves me with only ever being able to confidently suggest boon punishment.

The most obvious and simplest is to split the game modes and give different functionality for different modes. In pvp, spirits can be nerfed to what ever level they feel appropriate and in pve/wvw they can either be made invulnerable like banners or into massive HP sponges so they can work in world bosses and zergs.

Ultimately though, that decision rests with Anet. Its not that they aren’t doing it because they can’t, it’s because they don’t want to and it’s really just a matter of how long before they realize that they are wrong. They had to do it the first time around because there were too many skills and combos breaking things and they will have to do it again because the game modes are too different for a unified rule set to apply equally in a way that is fun for everyone.

So many of our needed fixes (better pets, spirits that work like banners ect) just won’t ever happen to the degree they need to as long as they will break spvp.

Funny enough, I was just talking to Durz earlier how I think the ultimate goal for traits at this point should be obvious traits with obvious PvE or PvP roles. It was in regards to how basically purposeless Read the Wind is going to have in PvE, and that it is really a PvP/WvW driven change that has no effect on the other game mode.

The scope of that can be expanded to skills and utilities as well, I think.

Although with Spirits, I’m of the opinion that they should go back to being like guild wars 1 spirits, so that they have long ranges and can be placed out of combat, and the PvP counter to that is to force players to sacrifice their positioning to go deal with the spirit, while in PvE/WvW, they can sit out of harms way while still buffing you/teammates. Then, some way to move them instead of an active, like a spirit teleport or a “get up/plant” type function that makes them walk, and a whole new set of traits regarding the new spirits.

But at this point that’s probably me just dreaming haha.

There is definitely no real reason Spirits shouldn’t have similar functionality to Banners. Where Banners can be picked up and become an improvised weapon, Spirits have an active ability. But having the ability to make them somehow move locations would greatly, if not completely, remove the need for the trait to make them follow you. At the same time having to trait into being able to make them change locations is not better than just having them chase you around and is just as poor a situation. So it leaves the question what do you do with that trait if they’re given the functionality to relocate?

You scrap it? It’s already the worst trait we have, it moves our squishy spirits into harms way, the spirit actives are pretty stupid as well, because you need to move some fragile group utility buff into Melee range to utilize it, and everyone knows Melee is the most dangerous place to be if you’re squishy.

The active should’ve either been 1) not there and instead been a sort of “teleport to me!” Sort of ability 2) been ground target or 3) been a “get away from me!!” Ability that made enemies have to get away or literally FORCED them away.

Sorry, what I meant by what you do with it, is what do you replace it with. If a trait goes away something else has to take its place.

Or… since it’s invulnerable, it’s not targetable, which makes more sense.

Yes, I’m asking for another buff or utility, but I’m giving a reason for it to exist that fits the intended design of the class without taking up important skill or trait slots. Also, if you bothered to read fully you’d understand that I didn’t add any slots. F1-4 is finite, so the idea has to fall in line, without removing any functionality, which I accomplished.

I also hate the “pokeball” aspect of pet swapping. One pet just vanishes from existence and the other appears from nowhere. In this case it becomes more like a tag team. The one pet comes to your side while the other jumps out into the fray.

One more Reef Drake (I use this one because it’s the largest pet available to us) on screen, or even twenty, isn’t actually going to make that much difference. Not any more than having a horde of minions around Necros. The only actual problem this would cause is that everyone would know at a glance what our backup pet is, and can plan accordingly. This is a very limited problem, if it’s actually a problem at all.

i already suggested something like this 6 months ago. People didn’t like it then, and i can see why.

I knew it would not be liked, I just thought of it while reading the after CDI thread and wanted to put it in writing. I’m actually amazed I got as much conversation as I did, as opposed to outright dismissal.

So basically you just want another traited spirit, except invincible and without a cool down?

It would work somewhat like a spirit, yes, except it would swap out since it’s whichever of your two pets is inactive. It would also be more reliable that spirits. The idea of having passive buffs, though, was only a possible if it wouldn’t become over powered. The main thing is the ready availability of one of two support buffs depending on which pet is inactive at the time. But it would still be on cooldown, since it’s an F-key ability. It would be shorter than a spirit cooldown, but the buff would most likely be less too. I’ve never really taken the time to compare pet F2 buffs to spirit active powers.

For the people who same or claim that all classes are nerfed equally across the board with this crit hit, is not true. Your forget, there is another piece to the Ranger’s puzzle.. their pet. They are also subject to this nerf because they will in fact operate under ferocity instead.

So now that we’ve debunked this, because Pet’s don’t have this stat by default we have, in fact, confirmed that Rangers are being nerfed less than all other classes because that ephemeral value of damage that resides in our pet will remain unchanged. Therefore we are only losing 10% of X-Pet% of our damage, not 10% total. Of course since Pet% of our damage is unreliable it works out to the same value anyway.

Kal Spiro.9745

Alright, so I just had this weird, possibly interesting idea. We have two pets, but only one exists at a time. I would like to change that. I know people are trying to have less pets, I want to have more. I want both my pets to be active at the same time, but in two different roles.

The active pet will work the same as is currently the case. It will attack, use F2, all the normal jazz. The passive pet will stay by your side. It may use a different set of buffs, or do nothing, either way, but it will gain direct use of the F3 key for a unique buff or support skill. The passive pet is invulnerable, so even if you’ve swapped and both your pets are out of the fight the F3 key will always do something beneficial.

The current functionality of the F3 key will go to the flip side of F1. Currently if you want your pet to attack you hit F1, if you want it to attack something else you target something else and hit F1 again and if you want it to stop you hit F3. In this case you would hit F1 locking it on, attack would become return, then you hit F1 again to bring it back. F1 basically becomes a toggle.

All pets would gain a new power. If the pet’s current power is a support power they would gain a new power relevant to combat. If the pet’s current power is combat based they would gain a new power relevant to support. All Porcine pets would get two new powers because the power they all share in common is stupid.

Downed power 3 will still summon your active pet, because it would just be entirely unfair to have your invulnerable pet healing you while your other pet is still doing stuff.

I disagree with the ‘it hurts other classes more then ranger’.

Ranger = 30% crit damage nerf
Warrior/guard = 36% nerf (just to follow your guys thoughts).

Ranger less nerfed so yay. WRONG.

You forget the other part of the thing.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER STYLE. BUNKERS.

All damage nerfed in the game, so inherently, all bunkers will survive longer. Guards/warriors, already can last a zerg offensive easy. -30% crit damage on ALL classes means they just are superior less vulnerable to burst and will most likely not even be pushed close to downed at all.

Now all ranger can do it hit protection enabled heavy armor professions and see ‘500-700 damage’ pop up. Wich is bull kitten (hammer warrior full pvt does 2000k+). Staff guard does safe but has a 600 range front range and 1200 range wide range cone and 5 target limit.

So rangers? Not nerfed by this? Wrong. The last viable kiting build to burst enemies a bit down (barrage + rapid fire + long range shot from a good position) will no longer work. Our numbers just won’t pop. At all…

No one said that Rangers weren’t nerfed. No one said that other classes were nerfed more. What we said is that Rangers were not nerfed more than anyone else. Every build that is designed in the same way is effected in the same way because this is a blanket nerf across the entire game.

Wardrobe Question - Legendary

The thing people also seem to be missing is that this is just the skin. It is the appearance of a Legendary without the always BoS interchangeable stats of the thing itself.

If you just want to look like you have two of the same legendary you could stick the skin on another one, but if you want to actually have two legendaries you would still need to make another one.

For me, this might actually give me incentive to get a legendary because I find them to be absolutely hideous. There isn’t a single one I like the look of, nor the special effects that accompany them. With this system I can mask the Legendary appearance without ever losing it.

Could’ve done that already by transmuting it onto another skin. And if you wanted it back to use a transmutation splitter.

First off, splitters have only recently even existed. It used to be that there were no options at all. After that the process of using crystals, which are almost exclusively acquired through Gems, and splitters for this sort of thing is wasteful. In the new system it isn’t at all.

So yes, I could have done it, but I wouldn’t have. Which is why I never did.

The shorter answer is, that’s not the design.

The design may be flawed, but that’s what they’re working with. They’re finally just now starting to actually listen to us a little and it’s possible we’ll start to see some real changes that improve how the pet functions as a part of us, but for now we’ll have to wait and see.

It’s also possible that in the future we may see changes that do actually give us something back if we choose to remove our pets from the fight, or possible options to redesign the functionality of our own pets to give back to us instead of being combat oriented.

Yes, what I’m suggesting is to boost ROF by ~50% and adjust the damage for a good visual of sustaining it. But in equal to the other classes. Then QZ would have a real burst impact, even better with shortened cast of Rapid Fire which isn’t that rapid now at all.

At second, I feel it a problem. We have to keep at the back of the zerg, and they usually kill downeds within seconds, so it isn’t that easy to hit them at least once compared to any melee who is in the middle of action. Not horrible now but would be nice, maybe as some kind of boost of Opening Strike.

If I were in AN HQ as a dev, would try to overhaul Rangers anyway.
(Professional animations, ~Initiative, hunter conditions, logical skill bonuses without making us OP, new armor and weapon sets, etc)

Honestly, I agree with this. Sustained damage means it just keeps coming, not that it’s obscene damage. I love seeing big numbers, but if we did less damage more often it would even out and potentially become more dangerous since it’s happening in a compressed period of time. It’s harder to ignore.

Obviously you don’t understand the argument, nor the purpose of the argument in the first place.

The Ranger is more than a guy who can shoot far. The OP is of the opinion that he has to be as good as he can at ranged damage because the word Ranger has Range in it. I was explaining why that is wrong. Then you come in and start arguing about, I’m honestly not sure what, but also unable to actually support your own claims in the process.

I really don’t care what your primary language is, if you don’t understand the subject and can’t support your own claims you shouldn’t be getting involved in the argument. I will not, however, hold back just because of those facts.

Actually, if you want an etymology lesson then the word Range comes from the actual meaning of Range, which is to travel far. Someone would say a target is ranging, which would become at range, meaning out there in the distance, traveling far. It has nothing to do with hunting. Nor for that matter does Ranging have to do with hunting specifically. Someone who is Ranging could be hunting, or scouting, or exploring. A Ranger is far more likely to use traps to get meat than to shoot things with a bow, though a bow and axe would classically be the combat oriented equipment some who was Ranging would bring with them. No one chases a rabbit, because that’s stupid. Equally stupid is trying to shoot a rabbit with a bow, when you can just trap them in a snare.

So again, Range in Ranger has nothing to do with long distance combat.

This has nothing to do with etymology because words are adapted to the current time. I won’t call you g** (homosexual) and then justify it by saying that the word was used as ‘happy’ is used in the current time.

Please, don’t attempt to pick on single words because it is fairly obvious that by range I meant distance.

Hunting for food with a bow (and spear) has an extensive history. MMO’s also have a history of calling the archer/bow class as the “Ranger”.

Anyway, please come with a real argument instead of picking on my wording and/or examples.

I’m sorry, what? Words are adapted to mean things other than their original use, that’s true. Range is one of them. Ranger is not.

It is obvious you meant distance, which is why you were wrong.

Hunting with a bow and spear does have history, in fact it’s still done today. Maybe not spears so much. This still has nothing to do with the meaning of Ranger, nor what they are about. MMOs have a tendency of putting a lot, not just bows, in the hands of Rangers. This includes dual wielding, leather armor, pets, healing and nature magic, survival skills. No one thing is the key to a Ranger, rather, it is the whole combined. Sorites paradox aside, if you take away each of the parts until you are only left with a bow you will not have a Ranger, but an Archer.

Now if you’re looking for improved arguments I recommend you look at your own, because nothing you have provided here has been meaningful nor valid.

-snip-

You understand that the Range in Ranger has nothing even remotely to do with ranged weapons, right? To Range is to wander hither and yon. It means to go on extended excursions. A Ranger is a person who travels the wilds for a living, not a person who shoots a great distance. So, not sure what to tell you.

If a ranger is a person who travels the wilds for a living then it means that the ranger is hunting and I don’t think anyone would try running after a rabbit/deer/bear and then kill them with a sword or greatsword. That is where RANGE comes in. A ranger needs to be very skilled in ranged weapons in order to hunt game because running after a rabbit with a sword in hand or trying to sneak up on a bird with a greatsword is no fun.

That’s odd Vexander because both my friend and I got the drawing off her not more than 15 minutes ago.

I think it might be because I missed the Evacuation of Lion’s Arch thing. I killed scarlet and participated in the battle, but the Living Story segment before that where you help people escape, I missed. All she tells me is, “I was told not to talk to strangers, and you sure are strange looking.”

That’s exactly what it is. She only gives if you did her event.

Kal Spiro, you are missing the entire point of my post. Yes all who are crit based are going to feel it, tell me though, whats a viable alternative to playing a RANGED ranger in WvW in zerg fights? One that has enough damage capabilities to keep up with other characters? I am choosing the play the class as it is CALLED ITS CALLED A kitten RANGER. My anger is based off of the fact that when we finally were able to begin to keep up with other classes in PvP/WvW situations, we are now being nerfed again. Yes its across the entire board, but other classes have better options to deal with this kind of damage nerf, we as rangers do not, for those who actually want to play the ranger as a RANGED character. And not be a condi bunker build.

You understand that the Range in Ranger has nothing even remotely to do with ranged weapons, right? To Range is to wander hither and yon. It means to go on extended excursions. Everyone who’s damage is based about crit is going to feel it. Regardless of the fact that other builds may exist for classes based on different stats any build based on crit damage is going to feel it equally. You’re the only who is choosing to play the way you are. That is the set and build you wanted, and unfortunately it’s the one being hurt, but it’s still being hurt for everyone of like mind and design. So too bad. Your options are, give up, figure out how to make it work, or try something else. All are viable with enough time.

Blade Shards, what now?

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Kal Spiro.9745

Kal Spiro.9745

Shouldn’t you still be able to get them from the Aetherblades in the Aetherblades bases around? Assuming those are still around.

The Aetherblade Jumping Puzzle in Gendarran Fields, the Aether path is Twilight Arbor (assuming it’s fixed), the sprocket node (if you have one) and forging sprockets are all the options now available to get more Blade Shards.

Every Aetherblade that still exists in the game has a chance to drop them and the sprocket node can give you a max of 3 a day (I actually pulled that off yesterday, I was syched.) Anyone looking for the 925 or more Blade Shards necessary for the Ascended Spinal Blade is in for a bad time, but then anyone who is starting from scratch is anyway.

They really should have made them tradable. All the other crafting components I use to make low level equipment, that I also need for ascended gear is tradable, so why not Blade Shards?

Official- 5 New Traits

in Ranger

Kal Spiro.9745

Why is it that when I read the new traits and changes for other classes I go “drooolll…” and when I look at Rangers, I go “it’s OK, we’re used to this” (I has a sad.jpg)

Dunno, I just went through all of them and the best I got was, “Yeah, I suppose I could use that in certain circumstances, none of my current characters, but sure.” None of them seemed particularly droolworthy, and it also appears that the actual players of those classes would agree. There are a handful of nice traits, most of them are in the wrong line, though.

Silly question, but, what’s the big deal about piercing arrows? I ask from a WvW point of view. I have never used it because it doesn’t add any help to what I am trying to accomplish.

Depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. If you’re trying to kill one guy piercing arrows isn’t doing you any good. If you’re trying to hit as absolutely as many guys as you possibly can at any given moment you need that slotted.

Why did Scarlet do any of the things she did? Most of them had somewhat reasonable reasons, but the closer to the end the less sense they make.

Thaumanova, to learn about Ley Lines, ok.
Molten Alliance, to make tech to track Lay Lines, cool.
The Aetherblades, for skyships, maybe, and portal technology I guess, to get around, ok.
Attack the Queen’s Jubilee, to get a bunch of robots, cause robots I guess.
Barricade herself in the arena, no idea.
Murder a Council member, so no one would notice her planting a probe in the bay?
The Toxic Alliance, to make poison gas, cause why not poison gas?
The Marionette, to test out her giant flying drills ability to fly upside down, and to make even bigger, less autonomous robots, oh and super death lasers.
Attack on Lion’s Arch, using poisonous gas in the coast where wind is a realistic problem, instead of super death lasers to just murder everyone instantly. No idea.

It would be nice to talk to Eir about Braham or vice versa, but they’re both pig headed Norn.

If you want to talk about the dragon you should be going to the Pale Tree, not Caithe. Talk to her about Scarlet, if you can actually get any information out of her.

People hate him for the same reason they hated Kormir. People want to be the main character and can’t handle that the Guild Wars stories were written with you being the guy who travels with the main characters. It’s not about you, and even though you killed Scarlet the LS still wasn’t about you, it was about DE2.0.

I like Trahearne and I look forward to his return. Or for him to die and me to take up Caladbolg in his stead, cause I’m way better with it than he has ever been.

And then you talk to her and either she doesn’t remember that you were the one that saved her, and left her father there to die, or she nearly threatens to kill you because you’re a Sylvari.

Everything’s on fire, your dad refuses to leave, your co-workers are scared, there’s dead bodies everywhere, three armored people protect you from vicious flame-wielders. Some people remember every detail of a catastrophe, others can only think of a single person.

I would accept this if not for the fact that I talked to her later in the refugee camp and she knew exactly who I was. So…

When I pass through Lion’s Arch I can’t help but think for a moment that somehow I failed. It’s like I played the game and lost. Obviously I have no influence over the story, but it still feels like I should have done more.

Oh we definitely failed. We’ve been failing repeatedly for a year and the ultimate end was just more failure. We accomplished absolutely nothing. Even killing Scarlet accomplished nothing. So you should feel the way you do.

I would have been much happier if the loss of such a major city had a bigger impact. Like a scattering of services. The dungeon vendors all get spread out to their relevant dungeons, the portals go to Vigil, which makes sense, but the forge goes to the Priory. While the Consortium moves to the beach outside the Whispers. The only place to find bank, black lion and crafting now being the other cities. Forcing people to spread out much much more to feel the actual bite of the lose of convenience that LA was.

How ‘bout no? I’m all for the bit on dungeon vendors spreading out, but I’d rather not loose the convenience. Using that stuff in conjunction was a pain in LA, and you want to make it worse?

Very much. I want to split the community around what they want to do and where they feel at home. I don’t like central hubs, I like multiple community hubs.

Some people were speculating that one of the current characters would die, myself included (I was betting on Kas or Jory). It was mimicking the original Destiny’s Edge too closely. Two of the same race, and one bites the dust. One character couldn’t be there for the battle (Braham/Logan). At least with this, they’re mildly different.

On the other hand, a character dying was the reason DE split up, while in this case it would have been the thing that brings them together.

And who knows? Maybe they’re just saving the character death for the start of Season 2. Anything can happen.

By this point if a character is going to die it will be the hastily introduced sister, not Jory herself.

Just to be clear, SAB is not specificly an Aprils Fool thing. This much was made clear when the second world was released at the other side of the year. It will probably come back i guess, but dont take it for granted. Its Living Story stuff, not a strictly annual thing.

My only hope is that whatever they have planned, it will be IN THE GAME. With the amount of out-of-game stuff ANet does these days, i fear that the game itself misses more and more of the good stuff.

SAB team is separate from LS, it is just a recurring event. My only hope is that it’s semiannual instead of annual.

It’s hardly unreasonable to expect Lion’s Arch event items to still be valid throughout the whole of the Lion’s Arch event – of which we are in the Aftermath stage. It’s only the logical time for players to think “Great, events over, time to cash in my chips” …except we can’t. =/

The fact that there’s not even anything else happening in the Living World right now makes it especially irritating. I’d understand if they wanted us to put Lion’s Arch behind us and focus on a new event with new vendors and rewards, but that isn’t the case.

Well, it might have been reasonable if they hadn’t specifically stated otherwise a full week before the end.
