So in the personal story we easily defend LA against the frigging ARMY of an ELDER DRAGON while enduring a badly done drama piece but Miss ANet’s favorite Salad conquers it?!?!?!?!?!

So Scarlet is now more dangerous than an elder dragon!!! That is by far the worst part of the Scarlet LS so far. And if what “Mortifer.2946” wrote is true than it gets even worse.

We defended (and I wouldn’t say easily) LA against a dragon champion, and a mindless monster of one at that. Not to mention the army that time was undead; not exactly overachievers. Scarlet is intelligent and resourceful and has an army made up of multiple factions of civilized races who have pooled their tech together into a very advanced and potent force. She is considerably better prepared and better equipped to take the city than Zhaitan ever was.

Plus if you haven’t figured out she’s a dragon champion by now…

Lot of commander hate in this thread! I understand where it comes from but I don’t think people should throw it around willy-nilly.

There are good and bad commanders, just as there are good and bad bosses in the real world. We’re all just people. But to say that all commanders are inherently control freaks or to block or ignore any commander you see outright on principle is not productive.

Some people buy the tag to troll. Some people buy the tag b/c they have the money. Some people buy the tag that have no business using it. Some commanders think the tag makes the leader. And some of us bought the tag because we enjoy being leaders and helping our community by taking those positions, and the tag helps us do that.

I understand that some people get barked at by terrible bosses all day in the real world; I’ve had my share of those bosses myself. Then you get in game and see a commander giving instructions and the thought is “This again? I came home to get away from this, f this guy.” I get that. And if the commander in question is being rude and barking orders, by all means block them.

But don’t write us all off for the failures of a few. Some of us genuinely want to be helpful leaders. The tag is a tool to help people lead; nothing more, nothing less. If you don’t like someone’s leadership (or lack thereof,) blame the person, not the tag.

tl;dr – Commanders aren’t the problem, bad leaders are. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Again, what inconvenience did it really cause you?

The wipe happens once every two hours (if Mari fails.) That’s two hours between each wipe for you to freely and comfortably do anything you need to do in the zone. If you are in the zone when the wipe happens and you’re at an event, all you have to do is WP and go back to that event. It’s no different than if you had been killed by some mob.

Really, this is a giant super-weapon that’s part of the culmination of this round of the Living Story. This game has always been about “if events fail, there are consequences,” and this event only makes that more real. Plus it’s temporary content, only in one zone, and again all it cost you was a couple silver and maybe a minute running back from a WP, at which point you have another two hours to do what you need to do.

It does not “help you not be able to play.” Getting killed and respawning is part of playing this game.

Kalarchis.8635

How exactly does this keep you from playing the game?

If you were in the middle of a dynamic event, you could just go back to that event from the nearest WP. If you were in the middle of a personal story quest then you were in an instance and can’t be killed by Mari anyway. If you were on the map heading towards your next personal story point then all you had to do is WP and run back there.

The only time I’ve seen the Mari wipe cause anyone real inconvenience was when a guild was doing a guild rush on the map when she went down (and frankly they should have known better than to start it right before she dropped.) But in your case all it cost you was a couple silver and maybe thirty seconds of running.

So again, how exactly does this prevent you from playing the game the way it was meant to be played?

Bumping with an update on the guild!

We’re growing fast. Nearing 50 members after our first week. Our current schedule is Wurm practice Mon-Wed nights at the 7PM PST spawn and a focus on temples and Marionette the rest of the week. Tonight we had a successful run of Balthazar, and we’re going to do it more often!

Everyone is welcome in FAA; Fort Aspenwood home server is the only req. Remember, if you’re already in a guild but would like to organize with us for these large events, repping is not required! We use guild message and the Fort Aspenwood forums for most of our updates. Got a channel in the TS too. Join us!

I run full celestial bunker staff ele and I highly recommend it for PvE and WvW. Traits are 0/X/X/30/30 with cantrip mastery, aquamancer’s alacrity, cleansing water, arcane mastery, blasting staff, and elemental attunement (no I don’t use evasive arcana, I don’t PvP). Utilities are arcane wave and cantrips.

My standard combo against monsters is, in rapid succession: Air 2, Earth 2, Water 2 and 4, Fire 2 and 3 and arcane wave. Add meteor shower at the end if necessary. This combo will waste anything that’s not a vet in typically one rotation. It takes some setup but everything goes off at once and the monsters just melt. Unless you want to trait for the boring Lava-Font-All-Day dps build, running staff effectively requires a fair bit of attunement dancing.

Your primary combos focus around Earth 2 paired with either Water 4 or Fire 2. Eruption is a blast finisher (and a very powerful one) so you’ll make area frost aura or area might with those respectively. Arcane wave can be used to blast any field you want; very useful to pop off more healing with water 3 and 5. Remember that when things get tough, you have many many methods of keeping enemies at bay: Fire 4, Water 4, Air 3 and 5, Earth 4 and 5. Those latter two are my favorites and you’ve got time after dropping eruption to hit one of them before you finish the blast with lava font etc. Alternately if you run glyphs you can drop glyph of storms after eruption.

Note that your auto-attacks are more or less useless. Your #2 skills are going to be your primary damage dealers. Water and Earth 2 in particular hit very hard and have low cooldowns.

Let me know if you need any more help! Good luck.

^ Omega got to it before me, but I think it’s more than that: Mordremoth is trying to kill Primordus.

When he awoke Primy cleared huge tracks of land in the Depths of Tyria…and then presumably set camp on a juicy leyline and started snacking. That leyline happens to be under Lion’s Arch. Drill comes down and lets in the sea, flooding the Depths and forcing Primy and the destroyers to the surface.

The surface, where Scarlet is waiting with an army and a giant battle robot with a hyper-potent toxin and last-ditch kamikaze blast. Mordremoth wants to take Primordus out of the picture. It’s not going to work, of course. It’s just going to make him mad. If you thought Zhaitan made a mess of the place…

Insta-downed is not the player’s fault when they load into an attack from W3, a bomb going off, and an attack from Marionette at the same time. Listen to Malafide; this thing is just concentrated death no matter what you’re running. One slip up (or a bit of lag) and everything goes south very quickly.

W3 is the only warden that will sit there and wait to attack until you do. If you wait until 2-3 other players load on your platform (and guide everyone else to do the same) the problem of loading into your death disappears. Not everyone will listen, but I’ve definitely seen less platforms wipe since I started spreading this advice.

Remember also that we need DPSers for this fight. If everyone specced for more survivability in L3 we’d be leaking champs and probably won’t kill the warden in time. It takes a mix of DPS players and good survival guards, and even if you’ve got that the platform distribution is a shuffle and sometimes one platform ends up with three DPS squishies and a bit of lag and that’s that.

Reviving the downed isn’t the problem either as long as you’re smart about it (don’t sit there and let the warden smash you unless you know you can take it.) Reviving the defeated is a different story; I’ve seen plats fail b/c of this. But quickly and carefully picking up the downed has also saved many a platform from wiping.

What will happen to LA? Your thoughts?

Kalarchis.8635

I personally suspect this is what is happening too (although why would Mordremoth, or whoever’s in Scarlet’s head, want to attack Primordus?).

Pet wish? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that all of this chaos right on the Dominion of Winds’ doorstep finally spurs the Tengu to open their gates, shoot the Aetherblades out of the sky, and they join the world as the 5th playable race.

Think about it: if things are so dire for LA, what better way for massive reinforcements to come in in the form of an entire race of skilled fighters who have been staying behind their walls all this time?

Well, if it’s Primy in her head, then she’s going down there to kill him to get him out of her head. Though the line about “you’ve been taking my credit” in her journal suggests the entity wants all of her plans to go off, and why would Primy stage an attack on himself? So if it’s Mordremoth in her head, then he’s using her to take out Primy so there’s less competition for the magic of Tyria.

I also see this as the perfect time to bring the Tengu in. One of the walls to the Dominion is coming down, either during the battle or from the drill, and they’re going to have to take in refugees from Lion’s and help quell the destroyers. It would be a huge missed opportunity not to introduce them now.

I expect to see that Aetherblade fleet raze the city (what air defenses?) Then that drill is going to do to Lion’s what the Great Collapse did to the Canthan district.

Drill goes all the way to the Depths of Tyria; down to the leyline that Primordus is snacking on. Sea of Sorrows floods in, Primordus and Destroyers are forced up to the surface. Marionette (+improved toxin) vs Elder Dragon. Round one.

Fight.

Maximum DPS builds (that means full zerker and traited that way as well,) will see about a 10% decrease in damage. 100% of that reduction comes through crit damage. Your crits will hit for slightly less. Your normal attacks will hit just as hard. You’ll still be specced for the best DPS in the game and you’ll still be able to deliver it. It’ll just be slightly less, on average, than you’re used to.

Many, many events were already like this. A good example is defense of the second beacon in the Melandru chain; the mobs that spawn are invulnerable until they reach the defense area (or for a few seconds if they spawn within it.)

This is to make sure that mobs for events are killed by people doing that event, instead of some randoms who happen to be over where the mobs spawn.

I agree with Ansari; these thumpers are probably just more triangulation attempts. If the ley line she wants is under Lion’s and EoTM connects to Lion’s, then perhaps the ley lines reach into the mists as well. There could be just enough energy from the ley line there (or a different line,) to help her pinpoint it.

2) The Marionette doesn’t seem to me to be part of the final product. She blew the thing up every time the event failed – that is what killed everyone, not some mega aethercannon, though you’d only realize if you talked to the NPCs after the event. She sent a brand new marionette each and every attack. So even if it is, she’s just be sending it out to blow up it seems.

Wait, that’s a detonation? It always looked to me like a laser that Mari was shooting out of her mouth. You don’t really see what happens to Mari after the weapon fires, so I always just assumed it went back into the drill.

Doesn’t change my theory though. The self-destruct feature could be the coup de grace, or at the least a trump card in case the other attacks from Mari fail. If all she wanted was a big bomb, wouldn’t she just make a big bomb?

Ok I missed that line about not designed to find something physical. Though all that says to me is that the thumpers detect magical energy. The thing she’s looking for could still be physical, she’s just using its magical energy to pinpoint it.

The thing about Primordus is that we don’t know if he’s still moving around or not. He might have cleared some tunnels and then set up a lair somewhere (under Lion’s maybe,) where he’s chilling while his Destroyers do all the earth-moving.

She could be looking for leylines or a bloodstone. But remember that her tormentor is some being that was looking back at her in the mists, and she has a giant combat robot that comes out of the drill. If she wanted a leyline or a bloodstone, what does she need a battle robot attached to the drill for? It makes the most sense to me that the drill is for reaching an elder dragon, at which point Mari comes out to fight it.

Guess we’ll find out.

I don’t see any rudeness in this thread. Loot and xp are not shared. This is simply a fact of the game. If you saw someone take your loot or xp then you are mistaken in what you saw. I don’t say this to be rude or to invalidate your opinion. The reason you might get different XP from the same mob is because monsters give more XP the longer they’re on the map. You might have killed a mob that had been around for hours when you were by yourself, and then killed the same mob that had just spawned with a couple friends, and you would get less XP for the second mob but it has nothing to do with XP being shared, because it isn’t.

Similarly, the only loot that any player even sees is their personal loot. If you’re playing with a friend, their loot will not even appear on your screen and vice versa. There are some environmental items, such as the eggs at Karka Queen or an Oakheart branch, that can be picked up by any player, and that might be what you saw. But as far as loot itself, it’s entirely personalized to each player.

What am I doing wrong?

Ele is the squishiest class the game; we have the lowest HP and armor and survivability is more or less dependent on 30 points in Water. Leveling up an ele is not easy and can be very, very frustrating.

It also takes a lot of practice to get our skills down. Whereas other classes can spam 1-5 to some extent, ele is all about combining skills from different attunements. My typical combo runs through all four attunements (Air>Earth>Water>Fire), uses Arcane Wave, and has a 3-4 second delay before all the damage goes off.

The class has a high learning curve and high risk-vs-reward. You go down very easily sometimes and leveling is not going to be a breeze. But once you get the hang of it ele is easily the most fun and rewarding class in the game.

BTW I would suggest you stay away from D/D and run staff in PvE.

-snip-

For Marionette there is a very large margin for error you are allowed to fail 4 times. that means that 80% of the map has to fail on one of the chains. finally all the champs have key strategies in which you can kill them without any significant problem. The only exception is probably the 3rd champ which has a lot of one hit kills.

The event as a whole has a large margin of error (provided no lanes are leaking,) but the fights on the platforms have a very small margin of error. I understand that there are key strategies to beat each warden. My post was about how those strategies can and do fail even with experienced players. It’s easy to slip up and sometimes very difficult to recover in time. Add in a continued influx of players new to the event and the fact that one or two people can doom an entire lane and you understand why the success rate on Mari is so wonky.

So why do people still fail marionette?

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Kalarchis.8635

Kalarchis.8635

The thing about Marionette is that is has a very small margin of error. Even with players who know what they’re doing sometimes you just get back luck. Distribution of players across the platforms is a shuffle, and sometimes a platform for Warden 3 will get all squishies. 3 in particular is the most punishing Warden; there’s just a lot of death on that platform. Even with vigor I’m burning through my endurance and cantrips faster than I can use them. It helps if you wait until everyone loads on the platform before you attack; this is the only warden that waits until you hit him.

Warden 2 is also tricky. Let’s say all five people on the platform know how to kite him properly. Except that everyone is loose on the platform, and the boss doesn’t always go in the direction you’re expecting. The techniques for hitting him differ from player to player and moment to moment; sometimes I can dodge into him and he’ll drop one on himself turning around, and sometimes he’ll keep going and we have to lead him manually. A couple of unlucky passes and suddenly the platform is full of mines and Mari is attacking you and by the time you recover and kill him you’re out of time.

Listening to WoodenPotato’s video about the wurm kill, it sounds like there’s a bit of randomness in that event as well. Even with a full map of players who’ve got it down, you don’t succeed every time. Same with Mari. On FA we had two perfect runs in a row Wednesday night. Last night we failed. It’s not a big deal. We pick up and we keep at it.

use it

Our community ts even had channels all set up and ready for our pve guilds/players to use. Not our fault the people that organized our Teq kills aren’t able to do it anymore and no one else took the initiative.

I didn’t know we had a forum! Guess I’ve got two forums to keep up with now. Though looking at it, there doesn’t seem to be much activity there. And yeah, the TS does seem to have a lot of empty channels. We tried to use it once for Mari and decided it was unnecessary. Definitely need to get people on there for wurm and teq.

I tagged up at wurm last night just to do it and it was interesting. We had about 50-60 people on map doing the event, and maybe half of those went to cobalt with me. We’re gonna need three times that in order to do the thing, but I was definitely able to understand the mechanics and start working out a game plan. I’ll try crimson and amber as well. It’s worth going to the event and getting experience against the heads even if we don’t have enough to complete.

Also brought it up during Mari. A lot of “just go join TTS” responses, but did get some positive feedback, and at the least I got people talking about it. We’re still very disjointed and non-communicative as a server, and many of our players seem to have just accepted that as the status quo. Let’s fix that.

Moogie and I have started talking more about an FA-only, non-rep guild for organizing this sort of thing. I’ve personally thought about something like this for my boss and temple runs. I get a lot of recurring players in my runs, most of whom are in small guilds, and I’ve been wanting to get everyone connected and organized, particularly so we can run things like Karka and Balthazar more regularly.

If we started up a guild like this, would others be interested in joining? Trying to think of a name with a catchy acronym.

Kalarchis.8635

NO. Rather tired of hearing this. Copy pasted my response from an earlier thread:

“I had no problems with Trahearne “stealing the limelight,” as it were. I never understood the hatred people had over this for Kormir either. This is an MMO where the character is a blank slate; clearly the player couldn’t take Abbadon’s place. Someone had to step up to the mantle of godhood, and it had to be an NPC, so why hate that NPC? Similarly, someone other than the player character had to lead the Pact.

My problem with Trahearne is that the role he filled would have been much better suited for Destiny’s Edge. We spend the first chunk of the game with members of DE and then they suddenly disappear. The Pact needs a leader and instead of them we get this sylvari with a dull personality that no one connects with. Trahearne could have still been around and still been at the front of cleansing Orr, but DE actually has leadership and dragon-fighting experience. Not putting them at the head of the Pact was a serious mistake."

Try it before you knock it. I had no interest in WvW at first either, but I dove in during Season One and I wouldn’t trade the experience and knowledge I gained for the world.

Features on The Commander tag

We’ve been asking for this since the beginning, particularly WvW players. We can’t even get them to increase the radius on /supplyinfo, which is as simple as changing one value. I’m hoping we get an overhaul in the big features release, but I’m not holding my breath.

This is why I always tell players on Warden 3: do NOT attack until everyone loads on the platform, or people load into AoE and die.

This small bit of advice has prevented wipes on W3 many a time.

Scarlet's Experiments: Leading to a New Race?

That’s indeed the right video, but the reference he uses is the Making Of art book. I don’t actually have that book (wish I did now,) and the only quote I can find is the one we’ve already listed here, so I can’t confirm anything

Scarlets tormentor: Dhuum & Menzies' theory.

Okay, so, what evidence do you have from the game to back up either Dhuum or Menzies? I see a lot of wanton speculation, but I don’t see any “I found X and Y in game and that points to Dhuum.”

Let’s remember that this is a game about dragons. Note also that Scarlet’s lair has a big red dragon painted on the ceiling and what appears to be a dragon’s eye posted all over. Note also that she has a giant drill and a giant robot, which one might use to reach and then combat a subterranean dragon. Note again that her thumpers were noted by Taimi to be searching for something…something underground.

Now for our final exercise, can you think of any red elder dragons that reside underground? Because I sure can.

Speculation is fun, but I’m here to put together the dots.

Did I miss the answers?

I’m honored that they picked my question on the Six…but it was really a half answer. Yes, it was nice to know that Abbadon was the last thing keeping the Gods here. But I suppose my real question was: “If they stepped back themselves, why did they willingly leave their power bound to the world where the dragons could corrupt it?” And as a follow up: “Does their power being corrupted by the dragons have any effect on them?”

Seems to me that they could have taken their power to the mists with them and prevented Zhaitan from twisting all the statues and priests. So why didn’t they? What control do they have over the bits of their power that was twisted. Could they have pulled that power away from the statues and priests once Zhaitan had it?

I made my question less specific in hopes of getting an answer. It worked…but now I wish I’d gone into more detail.

Casual vs. Hardcore Content

2. It cannot be narrative important. If a player dos not participate in the “hardcore” content, he should still get the full story that the participating player would.

Well don’t play GW1 then. There was a lot of story in the elite dungeons:

1) Sorrow’s Furnace – This place gave us the first real look into dredge society and their fight for freedom, as well as some dwarven history, including the Tome of the Rubicon, a very important book that talks about the Great Destroyer and the Great Dwarf years before Eye of the North brought all that to the forefront.

2) The Deep – A look into the consequences of the Luxon mining activities, what’s lurking down in the depths of the Jade Sea, and why the Outcasts went mad and are killing everyone.

3) Urgoz’s Warren – Similarly, a look at how the Jade Wind affected the guardians of Echovold, causing Urgoz and all of his wardens to go mad and kill everyone, like the Outcasts.

4) Domain of Anguish – A very interesting look at what happens to a fallen god’s minions when he’s defeated and they’re left in the remnants of his realm. Also, we finally got to see the Foundry of Failed Creations, where all of the titans are made.

5) The Underworld – Awesome insight into the workings of Grenth’s realm, including his fight for control with Dhuum and what happens to dead spirits (bringing Gwen down there FTW.)

6) The Fissure of Woe – Similar insight into Balthazar’s realm and his fight for control with Menzies.

Lots of lore and story in all of those, and they certainly were not doable by casuals (until everyone was OP by EoTN anyway.) Look, we need difficult content too, and making that content completely void of plot for the sake of casuals is ridiculous. Get over yourself.

Why Taimi Is Very Fishy

in The Origins of Madness

1) And who says Zojja is okay with it? My understanding is that Asura do what they want when it comes to personal ambition; mentors, teachers, and authority figures be kittened. I don’t understand how this goes against Asuran principles either. BTW, acknowledging Scarlet as a genius (which she is) and wanting to learn from her in no way prevents the character from also treating her as a villain. If your enemy knows things you don’t, why not learn from them while you defeat them? I don’t see the problem.

2) She has a few snappy remarks here and there. Also remember that she’s being presented to players as a face for the Asura; making her cute and friendly (while snarky from time to time,) makes her easier to relate to than the typical “I’m too good for everything I see,” attitude of many Asura. See Locoman also ^

3) Not every Asuran follows that name scheme. It’s a guideline, not a rule. If an Asuran parent gives their child a name that doesn’t perfectly follow the guide, does that make that child a rebel, or does it mean her parents know how to name outside of the box?

Do you have any concrete evidence behind your theory? B/c frankly you don’t have much of a case right now.

The ability to choose: Kill or not to kill

I don’t think we’re going to get that choice. I think Primordus is going to gobble her up.

But if we did get it, kill her. Far too dangerous and crafty to be left alive.

Can't stick to a class

Honestly it sounds like the issue is on your end. If you keep making new characters, getting them to lvl 10 and then losing interest, then one of two things is true:

A) The gameplay itself is not resonating with you and maybe this isn’t the game for you, or

B) You don’t have the discipline to stick with a class and really get to know it.

If it’s A, then you might try different game modes before moving on to a different game. If it’s B, then try sticking with a class to at least level thirty and see how you feel then.

As for a fun, ranged class with good DPS, I can’t recommend elementalist enough.
