All those in favour of having the difficulty reduced on this boss: (post a comment to show your support and your ideas on how to fix the issues)

From the mountain of bugs:
Obstructed cosmic rifts ( a bug which has been there since launch AC burrows I feel they should just be removed (the rift not the burrows))
Camera in circular dome ( smart idea arenanet the camera sucks as it is your just making it worst)
The targeting system ( it sucked kitten launch and it still sucks hard GW1 had a better system)
Previous bosses not despawning ((doesnt happen all the time) wasting tickets and money on repair)

Attacks
The AOE (overpowered I think the pattern should remain the same as phase 1 or either reduce the damage)

  • The clones* ( same issue reduce damage)

Clearly designed for hardcore gamers. I wouldn’t mind the one-shot downs so much if it was a group event like in a dungeon but not in a 1vs1 fight, it’s just like quick scoping on CoD, just leaves a bad taste in your mouth

Arenanet need to remember not everyone is a hardcore gamer what happens to the casual games that arenanet are excluding with theses events. Not everyone wants to play a berserk practically all the guides online used a berserker build

I know a lot of people are complaining about this on the forums, and I think with good cause there are many issues that need resolving.

You’ve got this just in one. I left. kitten this, kitten so called testers who didn’t manage to tell the devs the plethora of bugs. Or kitten devs who ignored the testers telling them about the bugs.

kitten camera zooming on my ears, because when I have kittening time bombs who will one kittening shot me it makes sense that I wish to examine my ears in detail instead of, you know, something dumb like WANTING TO HAVE MY CAMERA ZOOMED BACK AS MUCH AS I CAN.

kitten double bosses. Because when a boss is hard its kittening delightful to get a second boss at the same time.

kitten one shot mechanisms. kitten them hard. If I wanted to play Dark Souls I’d be playing Dark Souls. The pirate crew was tough but once figuring out how to stun, who to kill and dodging at the right moments we can get past.

kitten orbs lolobstructed. A kittening bug that has been around since the start of the game. What the kitten are your testers doing that didn’t even see that bug?! The FIRST time I entered the arena I IMMEDIATELY noticed the obstructed message!

kitten waiting anywhere between two to six minutes between tries. Who had this brilliant idea? We can’t even see what the kitten is happening in the area since we can’t see health bars! So what’s the point? Theater? Having made an instance with a spectate mode would have assuaged that desire for spectators watching an endless stream of… slow… damaging… mesmers/elementalists… slowly… whittling…down….a…boss…. until….. the….. timer…. runs…… out…..

I took her to 5% and 2% and it kept me going at it but kitten this. I’m not breaking my keyboard over an achievement. A BADLY CODED AND BUGGED ACHIEVEMENT.

Elementalist does not make a good first class, IMHO. If you would like a magey feel try a Mesmer instead. I have some advice on my signature for new players so check those too since you’ve just acquired the game.

The Mesmer’s damage is nothing spectacular but you get to play a lot safer since enemies tend to be distracted by them. It’s a bit like a pet class in the aspect of agro sharing, and if things go bad they can stealth and run away. Plus they are very support heavy and a very welcome class in high level instances.

Elementalist can do great things too (mainly constantly throwing heals and increase the party’s damage even if theirs is not as high as some other classes), but like I said I would recommend something easier to get used to GW2.

So what about mesmers and engineers?

Hmm.. You’re right. Of course Fire is AoE so in any occasion it goes off in the middle of mobs its value goes up. Apparently it does not crit and hits for an average of 900.

I did some napkin math (based on my Rifle/SD engineer) and 5% off her auto-attacks (around 2k-ish without any buffs) is 500 damage in a five second period. It almost catches up. but then another 5% from all SD lightning and another +5% from the toolbelt skills themselves and it has way surpassed Fire.

I thought engineer is a long range character

in Engineer

Kanto.1659

I consider 600 years mid range. Rifle is 900 (untraited). The usual SD complement is also 900, so there is no reason to go close than that if range is what’s wanted. On easy mobs/bosses we can be in medium/melee range and use Blunderbuss and our jump shot (which hits like a truck if we add both jump and landing).

The rifle also hits pretty hard and fast compared, for example, with a Greatsword mesmer who takes 1.5 seconds to do the same auto attack damage.

P.S. No immobilize? Rifle #2 says hello. Trait it and it’s also a cripple. You can pull with the Toolbox too. If you play with Rifle/SD you can have two Cripples, one immobilize and two knockbacks.

Perma 20 stacks of Might and perma Fury would seem to put the Ele where they might not do the best damage, but will increase everyone else’s to make up for it, and then surpass that mark.

Am I wrong? This is not talking about bringing a warrior who can also do Might stacking with a bow. Not everyone likes to play melee and such hardcore speed running min-maxing has a place, in WoW raids.

I followed you all the way from Reddit to GW2Guru and now here. Elementalists have always attracted though I never mustered the patience to play one.

Having to play in melee annoys me since I much prefer being ranged. I played a mesmer for a long time until it has begun feeling stale after nine months and now I’m playing an Rifle/SD engineer. I can’t fault the damage, I like it, I just don’t feel… useful.

The might stacking and fury stacking of an elementalist seem a lot of fun and useful, but again, their playstyle appears to be focused on melee (needing to be inside the Ring of Fire which means going right close to a boss).

Speedy kits. Don’t try to time it precisely if you don’t have point in a the traitline with boon duration. Wait until the boon disappears then swap. When I see these ‘devs buff X class because its their main’ I get a severe case of the facepalm.

A multi-million dollar business directed by people who buff a class because they play it

Analogy: MacDonalds top boss designs an hamburger. He is not happy because other hamburgers sell more than the one he invented. He orders all MacDonalds to put 20% less salt and ketchup and mustard on all hamburgers. Except his own. So that it will sell more than the others.

It’s just funny. But understandable. My kid brother used to yell at me saying I put cheat codes that made player one win over player two when we played Street Fighter. Side by side. On the computer.

The Staff....

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kanto.1659

Kanto.1659

It works because of the clones. If we have three clones out and we have the extra bounce trait, and have an Earth Sigil, then we can put around ten bleeds and lots of burning. But it’s not really much.

Now if we add condition duration it gets better. We can have 15+ bleeds and lots of burns. Great for soloing, but still not much for groups. One, we have the caps, two, we have the whole burn thing and guardians/elementalists which has never been too clear but apparently they jostle for ownership of the burns?

It’s a very complicated and needlessly obscure way of doing things, who knows how long the game was in beta, then 10 months live, and we still limp if we try to use Conditions.

We don’t even have a spammable AoE condition skill like necros and Epidemic, so we need to use our power/crit weapon, the GS, for AoE. Basically just tagging instead of doing real AoE.

Er.. So what exactly are we using for conditions? The scepter? Bouncing attack from the iWarlock? Wut?

What the Staff needs has been exhaustively talked about. Removing Vulnerability and bouncing trait working on clones. With that it’s pretty much set.

Though a condition weapon with a clone that ramps on power/crit is dumb, but it fits a Rampager set, except it does no conditions, so why have condition damage, and clones don’t do direct damage so why have Power?

Something like the pistol phantasms can crank up a lot of bleeds, so it fits the staff more.

New to 80, what are some optimal PvE builds?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kanto.1659

Kanto.1659

IMO, a common, no frills, get-used-to-it build for new level 80s is something like 20/20/0/5/25. You will get spoiled at once more getting your phantasms and clones recharging at the speeds we were used to.

15% damage to illusions, 20% CD recharge for the GS. Fury for phantasms, clone-on-dodge. Five points in Inspiration for Retaliation (it is hardly needed now it is not perma anymore, dump where you’d like, including Illusions and get another major trait). 3% more damage per illusion, extra bounce.

I found this to be a great ranged character. Stay away, churn out your damage, hardly ever leave GS, when having three illusions up and Mirror Blade + iZerker are almost up, shatter. For most things it serves, despite what more hardcore gamers might say. PvE is not difficult until high-ish level Fractals and this sort of simple playstyle lets you pay attention to the battlefield which is important when new and learning the dungeons.

I have changed to something I call the healzerker. Same traits, except the 25 in Illusion become 30 in Inspiration. I picked healing removes a condition, mantra recharging heals and phantasms have more 20% HP.

This is because I felt I twiddled my thumbs too much while waiting for cooldowns. The gear layout is the same as before, full berserker gear from head to toes, but I swapped my third utility for Mantra of Pain. I toss Mirror Blade, toss iZerker and then I spam Mantra of Pain. Each time it recharges it heals everyone around me for 2.6k plus my phantasms churns out regen to anyone close to *him.

The Mantra takes three seconds to recharge, which is three seconds we are not attacking and can be interrupted if we need to dodge. But once charged the Mantra can go off without interrupting any of your attacks, be it using your skills or using auto-attack, so those seconds in which we did not attack are now compensated.

To be honest 2.6k won’t save your team if they did not dodge, but you can churn those heals every 5 seconds. Coupled with phantasms throwing regen and not slacking off means HP bars can be topped off and most conditions don’t even need to be cleansed as their HP loss is compensated.

Kanto.1659

First, mesmers cannot stay steathed after an attack. Even if one of our clones attacks you while we are in stealth, we will instantly be revealed. It’s one of the biggest flaws to our #2 down skill.

Our stealth works just fine while our clones attack, thank you. What removes us from stealth and does so TOO OFTEN is pressing stealth and a rebound from the Staff counting as an attack and pulling us out. In PvP it is deadly having to completely stop attacking for a few seconds to ensure the stealth won’t break. When we need stealth we need it NOW (much like interrupts).

Why Devs FAVOR mesmers.

Kanto.1659

Smells like another novice who just stepped into PvP. We can’t possibly pay attention (though those above me obviously do) to every single person who comes in after getting beat by a mesmer.

A novice being beat is a normal thing. You need to practice more, not come to a forum and ask for nerfs. How well does it reflect on you that on a competitive game you shout for the others to be removed from the race instead of training to become better?

Anyone not a novice makes an easy difference between illusions and real mesmers, and as others pointed out, all stealths have long CDs. The shortest must be the Torch with 30 seconds, followed by Decoy with 40 seconds, and then we enter the realm of the 90 seconds.

Kanto.1659

The only reason the sword does more is because the sword is melee and gets the 30% buff. The time to run to a mob, dodge things, maybe die because of being so close to an enemy runs up against the safety of being at 1200 distance and seeing things coming our way giving time to get out of the way.

Again, no DPS addons, so each side will pull to what they feel is best.

To the OP, yes, trait your GS and you’ll hardly need to swap weapons while pew pewing from a distance.

Are condition mesmers viable for PvE?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kanto.1659

Kanto.1659

Zerker grenadier, 8 bleeds? Wut? No, 20 bleeds. What we need to think of are bosses. Which, tentively, we could say is what matters most, and with bosses the -50% duration means we rarely (ever?) reach the bleed cap in a 5 man. That grenadier suddenly only manages 10 bleeds and a zerker mesmer only about 5 or less.

I love condition damage, it’s just, well, we’re not necros. Necros, for example, get Epidemic. They can lay conditions and AoE, even if 15 seconds is not that short to be spamming. What does a mesmer who uses conditions does? Throw a 35 CD Chaos Storm and…. that’s it? Well, perhaps a scepter’s confusion beam since it goes through people.

So if we want to AoE, really AoE and not just tag, we have nothing. Chaos Storm will only tag and our obligatory GS for AoE will tickle the mobs since we have no power nor crit damage.

Objects? We might as well be hitting an adamantium wall with a wooden baseball bat. Again we resort to the GS to beat on a burrow or break free from a cage in the Colossus fractal.

The iWarlock hits hard, but again he uses power and crit damage, not condition damage. Why do we even have a hard hitting direct power/crit phantasm in the stuff? I ‘unno. The pistol’s iDuelist seems much smarter since it hits a number of times and places many bleeds at once.

So at this point if we want to break objects we need the GS, if we want the AoE we need the GS, which means we can use Rampager gear and make good use of both weapons. We are going to be neither fish nor fowl though, since even in full berserker a staff’s auto attack crits for around 700 (decent, if we traited for the extra bounce so 1.4k if both bounces crit and then we have either bleed or burn to add damage (or Vulnerability, but we do not speak of the bright design idea of adding Vulnerability to the staff’s bounce) and around 400-500 in Rampager and on the other hand Rampager has low condition so our ticks will be poor.

I love condition damage, not so much because of the dots, but because of the playstyle change. We ignore our 10-15 second long phantasms and focus on our quickly generated clones. Less CD watching, less growling at having them wiped. We can keep on churning clones and perpetually have three out. With some boon duration we can have 7-8 Might and perpetual Fury to whomever is closest, though again, if those 7-8 Might + perpetual Fury came to us instead of a random meleer, we could at least share them to the whole party.

What the one above me said. Obviously slot according to group composition. But with almost all compositions someone is throwing lots of boons around. Be it Might, Fury, Protection, Regen or whatever. Keeping an eye on your boons for those moments lets you share all your boons to the rest of your party. You won’t get them, but if everyone had 10 Might they now have 20.

If you have a good WvW condition build, you will STEAMROLL PvE content. I enjoy playing condition engineer way more than my guardian or mesmer in PvE.

Anything steamrolls PVE. WvW builds emphasize defense and offense where PvE only cares about offense. If WvW also had one-shotting skills that we either dodged or died it too would just focus on offense.

So tried the mantra build and just want to say…holy hell is it useful. Especially in PUGs with a lot of squishies. My DPS didn’t drop too much, either, which was quite surprising. Would recommend it (as linked earlier in the thread):

Yeah, tbh it’s one of my favorites too. Full berserker gear + Regen granting + 2.6k HP heals every 5 seconds? That’s pretty good. And though we need 3 seconds to recharge the mantra, which means three seconds not attacking, we can take this in consideration with our cooldowns and wait for the iZerker or Mirror Image to come out of CD and use them. The loss of three seconds not auto-attacking are made up by the fact Mantra of Pain charges can be used at the same time with other skills and crit for 2k upwards, not a great loss in actual DPS.

Like I said, I’m not trying to convince anyone. My experience is simply different than yours, LordByron. I find my phantasms and clones living long enough to reach having three and Mirror Blade + iZerker to recharge at the same time that Mind Wrack does (12 seconds) so that putting a new iZerker and throwing another Mirror Blade would just overwrite them, So I shatter instead.

What I do works for me and my content, what you do works for you and your content.

I’m also quite happy with a zerkerhealer build that does pretty much the same, but ignores shattering and focuses on Mantra of Pain spam to do a 2.6k heal every 5 seconds, but despite warning a party about it I am the one who needs to run after them to use it since they will not stay close to me. 2.6k is nothing grandiose, but constantly spamming it will top HP.

But, bosses still one shot and we must dodge so it enters the realm of gimmicks. Fun to have, fun to do, helpful, undoubtly, but doing it or not doing it will hardly sway the chances of success if the party is not dodging, and if they are dodging they have their personal heals and don’t need us.

I find the Warden very very very situational. Either a mob moves and it spins uselessly in place or it gets one shot since it lingers in melee instead of darting past like the iZerker does. Plus the Warden has a very hefty CD despite all the cooldown reducing traits.

In exchange of that the Warden is our hardest hitting phantasm, for sure, and on world bosses I favor him since it involves a lot of beating on a huge sack of HP that does not hit back.

But I am not trying to convince you, LordByron, and not even the OP. After… how many months has the game been out? Eight? Nine? I’ve been playing mesmers for… ::checks:: … 2100 hours out of 2900 account wide hours. I’m not saying I am good and right and you are wrong, only that I know what I like and can build around it instead of using what fits other people’s play-style.

You should try it for yourself and see what is it that you do and then focus on that. It’s a bit bland as an answer but it works for me.

What I did was look at my play-style. I don’t do level 48 fractals and dungeons I find all too easy (granted, I never stuck my foot in Arah, so again this involves my above mentioned ‘what do I do with it?’). Which means I commit the sacrilege of saying I don’t find reflects useful and find them clunky (sure, I can put down a Warden/Temporal Curtain, but I need to switch to a focus and… sword? Go into melee or stop attacking altogether? Scepter? And with Feedback lasting only a few seconds I get the same Confusion vibe from it out of blocking just one or two hits and then a hefty CD).

I am certain high level fractal runners will hiss at me, but, I’ve been playing the game since it came out and I don’t feel I’ve won, or lost, a dungeon thanks to my reflects. Either my party can dodge at the right times or I will save them once and then they will fail the next time.

In practical terms this means what? It means my play-style involves the GS, throwing the iZerberker and Mirror Blade as often as I can and then shattering them when I have three out and both Mirror Blade and iZerker are almost out of CD (it coincides with Mind Wrack’s CD).

So I built around this.

  • Twenty points in Dom to get +15% illusion damage and 20% Mind Wrack damage.
  • Twenty-five points in Illusion to get +3% damage per illusion, one extra bounce (it did a nice 2.7k, 2.6k, 2.7k crit on a veteran Ice Elemental when I did Jormag yesterday. It impressed me to get almost 8k out of it considering someone also got 9 stacks of Might out of it and the 9 stacks of Vuln and it recharges in 6 seconds) and reach IC since it impacts so many different skills.
  • I had to sacrifice something for it… and after much pondering it was my clone-on-dodge. I miss it. It’s flashy, it’s pure Mesmer, it’s great to shatter quickly, but it does not impact that play-style I mentioned. So only 15 points in Duelist to mainly grab Vigor-on-Crit, Fury-for-Phantasms and Sharper Images to add a bit more damage (because of said play-style I noticed I rarely am close enough to use Illusionary Persona, the strong contender for those last five points).

Voila. This is more me explaining my reasoning than the best build for dungeons. I suggest simply to follow that reasoning yourself and build according to how you play… which may include Reflects, heals, etc. It is your play-style after all.

On bosses, yes. Veterans and silvers it happens in seconds depending on the setups. Conditions are so reviled nowadays that it is rare® to find someone willing to play them, which does lower the chances of finding conditionmancers, no matter their class.

Unless playing with a mesmer, which casually tosses 8-10 bleeds despite being a berserker, or a grenadier who tosses 20 bleeds np even in berserker gear.

But as you mention on bosses this seldom to never happens, the 50% halved duration makes sure of it and we could make a point out of saying that bosses are what really matter anyway.

But this whole thing enters the realm of shaving seconds (not minutes). It is no longer about viable or non viable. There is this whole 6 minute timer in everyone’s heads that must be beat so shaving ten or fifteen seconds off a boss has become quite important.

Not even because the encounter will fail since there are no DPS checks.

True. In my engineer example (the only one I have experience with) stacking 20 bleeds without condition duration rune setup was a common thing with the grenades.

And out of curiosity, yes, 3.5k? Is this another one of these slight hyperboles common in forums, or a case of casually forgetting to mention 25 Might and 25 Vulnerability and 25 Bloodlust?

Because though I can see an increase in 500 damage from adding ruby orbs (more if Scholar) I can’t see a 1.5k increase from it. Perhaps with Bloodlust on top too. And Might.

Well, no answers to my question so I suppose there really was nothing to add to it. I’m enjoying the build. It’s simple, it feels fluid. The damage doesn’t seem bad even though SD ‘only’ crits for around 2k until I change my rune setup. It still means the above mentioned 2k , 4k and 8k (on a 7, 12 and 18 second CD) +2k SD each time (if everything crits).

If we had a class that had a trait that had it take -90% direct damage at 25% HP I’d like to see people’s reaction to it.

Digressing from the OP, we could think about… :

Food that did -40% direct damage taken.

Or the maximum damage a boss could take being 10k per second so if four berserker warriors were hitting it only two of them would do damage and the other two would be whiffing with only their 42 bleed ticks.

The Might stacking is much better…. precisely when we have the bleeds that Nemesis did not wish. I remember doing the same with my engineer and grenades. I could get as much as 17 stacks of Might and they would tick as much as 90 per second on a full berserker gear.

With a build that does not have bleeds the rubies seem much better.

On a dungeon boss (the only metric that seems to matter as silver mobs are not a particular objective and world bosses have so many people hitting them that it does not matter if we sit there auto-attacking) we also have conditions lasting less (half time, was it?) which means even a dedicated condition player will not reach 25 stacks on their own.

Champions don’t see to have that duration halved thing, but, then we enter the realm of pugs. Can we trust a pug to provide Might? Can we trust a pug to have a dedicated bleeder? On a pre-arranged group throwing random conditions will just annoy the one person who is geared and set for them.

I’m curious on how you can believe people play an MMO and not think of it as a social thing.

The bottom line, ‘U-tube’ links or not, boils down to a few simple words: I don’t like it, so no else should have it.

Like I said, I had no runes to increase damage. I was with a boon duration setup. With orbs I’ll have a +12% crit damage, +power, etc.

I haven’t played engineer after getting tired of grenade skill shoting, but I was messing with my old Rifle/SD and was surprised at seeing it hit so (apparently) hard.

Even with the old boon duration rune setup (useless in the Rifle/SD) I was still pulling 2k auto shots, high as 3k on world bosses, with Personal Battering Ram replacing Analyze on a 12 second CD and doing 4k crits. Wrench throw was almost 6k on world bosses on a 18 CD.

It surprised me at how much more fluid it felt. I remembered it being a lot of auto attacking while waiting on CDs. It also completely trolls mobs between Net Shot, cripple from Battering Ram’s toolbelt, cripple from (traited) Throw Wrench, knockback from the rifle and knockback from the Battering Ram.

That said, this is what I am using. All berserker. The +2% damage from each condition trait is more for dungeons and world bosses, but there is really nothing that rrrreally grabs me from the tree. I don’t feel a need for extra range and have enough cripples and knockbacks not to feel Sitting Duck a necessity.

Anything that could be improved though? I don’t intend to PvP or WvW with it. I was pondering taking 10 from Tools (or Firearms) and maybe put them in Alchemy, grab Backpack Regenerator. Or put them in Explosives and grab Incendiary Powder.

To be fair, anyone who links a video (especially for a build, instead of just linking the build) instead of writing it in text first needs to re-evaluate how much time they have free in one day, as I could absorb the text in 30-60 seconds which fills a 15-20 minutes video. And unless it’s a stop-motion video with audio explanations of why which ability was pressed when, this video provides 0 extra information compared to a short snippet of text.

Nemesis over the Necro forums drives me nuts with this. He has his grip on things and his effort to help others is laudable, and I’ve used his guides. But his insistence in using videos can drive me to distraction. I need to check traits? Here I am browsing the playback bar. I want to check his gear? Random browse the playback bar. What sort of sigils in his weapons? Browse the playback bar.

Yes, but it’s such a small guide that the effort to correct it was not in my mind until now.
