I suggest picking up the staff. Most of its damage comes from auto attack so you’re not bogged down by cooldowns. Grab Decoy (pretty much never remove it, it’s a great panic button), Mirror Images and whatever you want for the third one.

First mob. Staff 2, then staff 3, then Decoy. When the mob is at 30% HP use Shatter 1.

Second mob. Staff 2, Mirror Images. When the mob is at 30% HP use Shatter 2.

Third mob. Staff 2, staff 3, staff 5. Shatter 1 at 30%.

Just rinse and repeat and you should never need to twiddle your thumbs while you wait for CDs.

First 5 points go in Illusion. Whatever build you do never remove them as they work on all weapons and all skills.

By my testing it simply does not work at all. Same with Retaliation for phantasms.

Our experiences differ. In all this time WvWing I can safely say there was not one time I entered a fight and needed my heal and had used it to run faster. Perhaps I’m just more spatially aware. I keep looking around me as I run and fight to see where people are. If I near a place that shows there is fighting I don’t use my heal since I’m near anyway.

Anyway, it works. I would gladly use the focus and free my runes but the focus has too big a gap IMO so it does not serve the purpose.

Very true. Having a random neutral critter being called to the fight is dumb and bad, and the dev who coded it should feel bad. How hard can it be to make the clone produced by dodging follow the exact same procedure as one summoned by a staff?

I’ll just add my two cents to say the same I mentioned to my guild: I love glass cannon builds. Please, bring more of them to WvW ^^

No, centaur rocks for everything. You also never need to heal at the start of a fight so the heal has plenty of time to recharge. If I would like to use other runes? Certainly, but I also like to reach where I want in a fast manner and 15 second gaps in swiftness is terrible.

Statistically speaking unless you lose the fight by 2% HP that extra condition damage that would have won the fight does not really enter the equation.

You play with a scepter, that explains it all. Ditch that terrible thing and grab yourself a staff. Ditch the Vita too. If you’re leveling you want Power + Precision even with a staff.

I got that when I was farming WvW to buy shoulders. It took me two weeks to get 291 badges and on the last day while I made 20 badges a warrior friend casually mentioned he had made 63 in the same time span.

Now this… is pretty weird. I was taking half the HP of enemies at times with a simple GS 2 + 4 + Shatter, killed plenty, and even so most of my badges were crappy white gear, grey vendor trash and sometimes blues and greens with a trickle of badges.

You’re both very strange. You act as if we don’t have weapon swap, as if PvE was not butter and we a hot knife. You also act as if any proof shown will be immediately dismissed, ridiculed while you shout LALALALALALALA with your fingers plugging your ears.

Of course the GS has CDs…. like every other weapon and class…… minus thief of course.
So.. when you use… your GS… and…things are… on CD…. you swap… to another weapon….

I may have found the reason why you two flounder outside of classes who AoE by auto attacking!!

I’m always serious. I believe I have deep enough knowledge of the class. I certainly know what it’s not capable of. So it doesn’t surprise me at all that everything I see in this thread is random bragging without a single proof video.

Even you yourself admit that mesmer has to upgrade to exotics to become somewhat effective in PvE. That’s laughable. Exotics are the end of the road, my friend, not the start.

A single mob, not any single mob.

As the above posted, shatter does not use the traits ‘on death’. Shattered and Killed are different things, so by shattering instead of letting your clones die you are not crippling them.

Change it to Mind Wrack does 20% more damage if that’s your playstyle.

You’re serious? I thought you were just trolling. You mean you don’t kill a single mob in 7 seconds or so? I’ll grant that other classes may kill them in five seconds, but seven is nothing too bad. Why seven seconds? It’s the time it takes for my bouncing blade to recharge and in my experience once I use they die.

I still think you must be trolling and not being serious but I felt compelled to reply as anyone having such a bad experience with mesmers must need some help with his build or his gear.

It’s what made me change from the Staff, as much as I enjoyed it for leveling. We basically sit there auto-attacking once we have three phantasms out.

You forget I already am level 80. I did it with both a warrior and a mesmer. Your refusal to deviate from your chosen playstyle (never Shatter, keep illusions up at all costs, only use Staff) is what made the difference.

But I will not change your mind, will I? Lament.

The insistence for all classes performing in the same way makes no sense. Do you like an engineer’s superb AoE, varied kits allowing for a multitude of playstyles and steampunk vibe? Why, play one. Do you like purple papillons, soloing champions, being very hard to kill and a playstyle revolving around quick lived illusions? Stick with the mesmer.

I’m digressing from your question but I feel I’ve squeezed that one dry. Shatters are part of your AoE and how the class is balanced. A ranger without pets, a engineer without kits or a mesmer without shattering boil down to the same. And this, I repeat, from someone who dislikes shattering. I much prefer keeping them up and serving as distractions while I kill the mobs, but when I have 3+ group I know I have AoE available to me.

As I mentioned in another thread, this is not requesting advice, it is just stating an opinion and the refusal to budge from it.

Regarding the one who mentioned my ‘shatter’ build. I only Shatter when I need AoE, otherwise I prefer leaving my illusions up since they serve as distractions. Ranged mobs? Please. Kill them first, the melee mob will join you and you’re AoEing both. Conditions? Vhe haf dis leetle zhing vhe call Null Field. Eet eez very good, ja. Are you swimming in conditions? Add Desinchanter too. I’m level 80 now and Null Field has been more than enough.

Oh, I don’t. I loathe melee. I played a warrior because it was fun, but a fun backed by high health and high armor. My mesmer is long range only and yes, Staff was my weapon of choice while I leveled and the GS was shunned, but at 80 I like the GS more.

Just like my warrior ended up being an auto-attack character (axe/horn) the Staff is pretty much auto attack as well. I liked the GS for the extra buttons to play and even so I have Rampager set in case I wish to go back to the Staff.

Why do you want to be an exact same thing as an Engineer? the exact same thing to an Engineer… is an Engineer. Play one if the AoE they do grabs you.

I started leveling one too but I confess being low level again is distasteful and I can’t bring myself to do it again.

As others pointed, keeping your gear up to date is important. Personally every 10 levels or so I’d hit the TP and buy a full body new set of gear (don’t forget rings and amulets), oft times for less than 20 silver total.

Your complaints are valid, but you spoil it by mentioning you dislike Shattering. I dislike Shattering too, but there is a time and place for everything. Saying you dislike Shattering is like saying you like Rangers but dislike having a pet, so you never use one. You can play like that but it is a cornerstone of the class and if such distaste is so well ingrained then maybe the class is not for you.

That said you have a few utilities which will really help. Decoy sheds agro and gets you another clone, Mirror Images rocks until we get the clone-on-dodge. The class’ idea is that they do have AoE. On demand even, but if you refuse to it then you cannot complain about its lack.

As a non Shatter believer myself I hear you though. But lets say you agro three mobs. Staff (or greatsword) clone, Mirror Image, Shatter. Staff (or greatsword) phantasm followed by its clone and Decoy. Shatter again. Now both damage Shatters are down. Chaos Storm if you have it up and mop up. This was my standard procedure against three or more mobs.

I leveled with the Staff and with a distaste for the Greastsword, and only at 80, with all traits in place and all. did I made it my main weapon. Now that I know what to aim for I would have used it since much earlier.

10 points in Domination, for example, nets you a cripple-on-death trait. Since all GS clones spawn in melee that means you are sure to be keeping mobs slowed as the combat starts. Add another 10 points and you can have a Greatsword cooldown reduction.

20 in Dueling and you have the fabled clone-on-dodge. You can remove Mirror Images at this point in life.

With five points in Illusion and you have a 20% CD reduction on all illusions, traits and weapon skills. With this base core I mentioned you’re a mass producer of illusions with things dragging their leg as they try to catch up.

As for gear try to aim for power + crit. Nothing else is really needed.

You don’t sound like you want to be convinced, so I am unsure why you posted. It smells like troll tbh.

Mesmer does not do enough damage? Pardon? As someone who played a warrior I am unsure if serious. Engineers may pump out more damage with grenades, but they do that against all classes, not simply more than mesmers.

Your number one utility are your clones. Keep churning them out, mobs do not chase your party members so that they can chase your clones. Now add a cripple on death trait and you’ve just become a cornerstone in those chaotic five silver mob pulls.

Start your pulls with a illusion, have the whole group waste their alpha strike on an expendable clone instead of a valued team member.

Got Null Field and Feedback (as you should). Is there no need for them? Are you chomping on a boss/champion? Thrown them on the mob anyway, projectiles going through will add confusion stacks and that’s more damage.

Granted, if you’re playing with a staff (our defensive weapon) and complain about DPS (do you even have the extra bounce traited in?) it does not even make sense to post about it. The way you put it I’m unsure if you even are equipped with your exotics and using your berserker gear, because saying the GS is subpar smells like using green Rampager (your staff’s gear) with a greatsword.

Update. The shoulder armor can be bought from the WvW vendors via badges. Now only the gloves are missing.

I’m having a hard time finding these gloves and shoulders. They are called PvP Plain Mantle (though they are actually the shoulders from the Wizard set) and the gloves Rubric Wraps.

Rubic Wraps I was told that dropped from the storyline and level 40 mobs. Not a single one in the TP says that’s a no. I even took the trouble of looking from level 30 to 50 and none matched the icon. Also, I’m level 70 and though I got the Rubric chest piece (called Slayer Chestguard, or something) no other Rubric armor has dropped since.

Any help would be appreciated even though my hopes are low.

It makes sense for Sylvari to eat and drink. Unlike a stationary plant who extracts its needs from the sun and the earth the Sylvari move and actively think, both things that burn energy at an alarming rate.

Thus they need a secondary energy input and food/drink comes in. Plus it helps in their mimicry of humans.

What I would like to know is to what purpose do they glow at night. Lovely as it is I would like why they do that and Wiki has no answer.
