Dunno, cleansing bleeds is quite easy. Which probably warrants the damage.

That’s another thing, there’s too many spammed short duration conditions which are essentially immune to condition cleanse.

Which is more threatening :

1.) 3 bleeds per second (3 second duration each).

or

2.) 3 bleeds per 5 seconds (15 second duration each).

Compare Warrior Longbow Burst ability to Thief’s Death Blossom, one is countered pretty hard by cleanse, the other is practically immune.

So Anet, what do you plan to tone down?

By the way as an aside, the “PvP Community Coordinator” has very poor attitude in all her posts. Very condescending and sarcastic. For all the poo we fling at the pvp devs they at least keep their heads screwed on right when they post.

If I could hazard a guess, I’d say that Allie came to the forums in a very positive manner at first but this place is a sea of tears and anger that never stops, even when she tries to be reassuring. She and other devs are very passionate about their game, and after a year or so of constant Q_Q, rude comments etc, what more can be said?

This is true, and I think she’s justified to be irritated with the forum users, but it’s still a bad idea to be too sassy since it’s just poking the hornets nest even more. =p

Personally I think they should’ve made it so the Elite slot was just a 4th utility slot, EXCEPT that it would make w/e utility you put in it stronger.

Take Ele’s elemental pet summons.

Glyph of Lesser Elemental could be slotted in the elite slot which would then make it Glyph of Greater Elemental, just as an example.

Would be much more interesting, and closer to how Elites were in GW1, which I loved way more as basically “Stronger” utility skills rather than these gimmicky iWin 3 min+ cooldowns.

Please stop these “e-sport” things, and tournaments like this. It’s wasted money and not competitive at all. It just makes me laugh when I see GW 2 tournaments with a real prize pool. Are you really just ignoring the broken PvP? I really don’t get, why tournaments like this one, even takes place…

I’m guessing it’s because this is the only way for the pvp team to justify getting more resources from the higher ups.

basicly jukitten give us a charrzooka.

we are engineers after all using turrets devloped by charr.

and lets face it what engineer is not able to reverse engineer tech ?

you could set it to 1500 range fire 3 rockets at once and work exactly the same as grenades but single target based and not ground targeted.

and make it shoulder mounted rocket launcher they are awsome

Even more fun would be making it a normal kittenraight-forward projectile, except targeting and enemy won’t make you auto-aim at them, so then you’d need to manually aim with it lol.

I wouldn’t mind to a reincarnation of a “Mine Kit” in terms of being a trap/sabotage kit.

Something more like nade/bombs where they have different functions/flavors, but it would be focused on invisible trap set ups.

Not necessarily all being mines, but mostly, with a few things like net traps and what not.

Or hell maybe something that’s a cross between bombs and turrets, ranged invisible traps or something like that.

Offense vs. punishment, risk vs. reward

Knote.2904

Just so you guys know:

We’re not entirely opposed to toning down auto attack damage in PvP (we could split some of the skills and leave PvE/WvW where they are, for instance). I think it’d be a great way to add more importance to the main bar skills, and, in fact, is something we used to have before ship.

There was a time in balance when #1 skills across the board were said to be “too ineffective” by many players to be used. So we made an effort to bump them up and make them more impact-full on the game, so that they didn’t feel like a waste of the #1 slot. There was also a time when most skills had higher recharges, and longer activation times/aftercasts.

From much player feedback, we found that by lowering recharges and cast times, the game FELT better for the person using skills. But, as you guys have said, sometimes it feels like you aren’t punishing by making someone waste a long-cooldown skill, or you aren’t rewarded for interrupting a powerful skill because it comes back too quickly.

Just wanted to say that we agree with you guys, but we have to balance the risk/rewards vs. how good the game feels to pay.

Thanks for all the great ideas! We’re definitely listening.

Was this pre-launch?

Cause I don’t think I notice that much of a difference from here and during beta weekends.

I have to agree that it feels better in PVE, having bad sustained dmg and nothing but burst cooldowns makes general solo PvE kind of a pain.

Like leveling on a Mesmer, or leveling with Ele sceptre, nothing but slow cooldowns to do dmg and it doesn’t flow very well. On the other hand however, having a super strong auto like Lightning Whip makes it easy, but also pretty boring, doing anything other than Lightning Whip is a dps loss really.

I want to say that the changes would actually be an improvement for PvE encounters as well, instead of just spamming auto’s to win, but I can see why it would be hard to justify such changes. =/

Splitting might be the best way to go, shaving dmg off auto’s in PvP doesn’t change the abilities themselves too much, though it would be nice to have changes that don’t need splitting.

Also I think it might be a good idea to put more utility on auto’s, it could even possibly give them more depth as well and cement them as solid filler attacks even in cases where dmg is low. For example :

Take the Thief trait that has a chance to give initiative on auto attacks, even if the dmg is low it becomes decent filler for recharging initiative for better attacks, and reminds me a bit of how Focus resource for WoW hunters works, with steady shots being filler that provide extra resource.

For other classes however, having extra utility on autos such as Mesmer Sword or Ele Staff Earth is also nice so there’s a use for it out side of just “dmg spam”.

And then there are cases like Ranger Greatsword auto with the evade chain, and Guardian Hammer chain with the aoe field, although having passive evade in the case of GS isn’t very “healthy”, it does provide some depth to the attack in that you could purposefully time your attack chains to provide a different function other than “dmg spam”.

Like you can interupt the Greatsword evade to cast it again for a controlled evade or double evade, ways to give more depth to auto chains like that would be fantastic. In fact, I think every auto should have a chain, where Ranger Longbow/Shortbow don’t, not only for depth, but also for risk/reward, the chains require you to commit to them in order to get dmg out and dodging interupts that, that’s a good way to add risk to Auto’s.

Something to chew on. =p

I dont think it should be water. I use my elixer gun for my condition and boon build. The Super Elixir in combination with the acid Elixir creates a retaliatation area. Reataliatation is fairly a strong boon i think. We already have 2 waterfields with our healing turret, so it is fine like this for me…

If the retal from blast finisher was better I’d agree, but a measely 3 seconds isn’t much for a single blast finisher IMO.

If we had better ways to proc the cleanse with 100% projectile finishers, or if blast finisher on light field was an aoe cleanse instead I’d be good with it.

Me, I don’t think it’d be good for the game. Variables force you to take them into consideration when you build, so that everyone isn’t just playing stealth/evasion gank builds.

They’ve said on more than one occasion that they’re looking into other modes, including one that focuses on fighting with only light objectives, but it seems like they’d prefer NOT to have a purely deathmatch game mode.

Yeah, I don’t think they should focus on pure deathmatch.

I do think they should make alternative modes for the current maps though, just retool the mode a bit so it can be deathmatch, and contained to be more of an arena or something.

Conquest games isn’t about just outnumbering and objectives, its about reflexes coordination and A LOT OF thinking … (I know .. thinking sounds silly but hear this) :

If a partner is being demolished by 2 others and a point is being taken at the same time like 2500 range between both , what would you do? Well it depends what will be more rewarding and at the same time you should ping and see whats on the map, as I said coordination is the most important thing, which makes conquest amazing and more than just plain “ill burst the kitten out of you”. The problem with conquest is that in solos you might end up against better coordinated solo players with similar thinking which doesn’t even involve them spending time pinging and chatting about tactics, cuz they already have the expirience and goal about what they want to achieve and take control off. But the team games are amazing if you are with people who you trust and have tactics.

I do agree that arena pvp type is amazing but that just reminds my days in pretty much every other mmo I’ve played, GW2 differs from them and I would like this to stay that way. Although I wouldn’t mind a new style of game mode, something comples again :P

Conquest is like, one dimensional compared to DotA/LoL maps.

Also there can be a ton of strategy in a simple 3v3 fight as well.

And yes, I did pass this on. We don’t reject ideas instantly, either. Sometimes it is one idea that inspires other great ideas, which is why threads like this are great. Just because it’s a suggestion that could mean a possibly unlikely overhaul doesn’t mean you shouldn’t share it!

We really appreciate the feedback, and would like to see this conversation going with more ideas if you have them!

Thanks

Definately, no need for major reworks, could just take it one step at a time “shaving” the power of passive dmg (like autos) and increasing the risk/reward on 2-5 attacks.

Personally my favorite attacks in the game are those of high risk/high reward.

Kill Shot.

Staff Ele with Lava Font/Eruption/Meteor, amazing skills.

Grenade Engy (not too much risk melee range though)

Engy Rifle burst set up.

Ele burst set up (not fresh air garbage =p)

Etc. Would love to see more of this, but of course, don’t focus on making more crazy burst/spike though, if there is crazy spike dmg set up, then the set up needs to be a difficult set up (risk vs reward).

Not everything needs to be remade to becoming spike combo’s like shatter spike, or engy/ele type burst.

Stuff like Ranger Shortbow/Rapid Shot + Quickness or 100b Warrior is less spike and a little easier to counter.

I think a bad example of this is Thief backstab burst, and Fresh Air/Lightning INSTANT burst dmg.

Making this a water field would make engineers running elixir gun unkillable. Engies already have a HUGE burst heal with the turret + blast finishers. Giving another water field to blast finish would be unreasonably OP, and give twice the opportunity for burst healing.

That’s not true, there’s a finite number of blast finishers which are already used on turret which is easily accessible.

This would just give more options, if you take elixir gun, you could skip healing turret, etc.

But not guildcapes, oh no! That would totally not fit with the game’s artstyle!

Have they said they aren’t doing these, like officially?

Yes. There was a video interview with Colin Johanson where he says people are working on this on their own time. Apparently there are major technical difficulties with capes and how the characters move. And the way he phrased it, it was all races not just Charr.

If they’re working on them on their own time, doesn’t that mean that they are working on them, just that it’s not an official priority?

I find it hard to believe myself (as other games manage it – with clipping issues sure, but this game has plenty of those!), though Charr are obviously a problem – they could have something else, though.

They couldn’t do capes in 1 year, but put neon fairy wings in 1 week. Priorities are kitten up in ANet.

Wings, the way they have them, are a lot easier than capes, though, which is I think the cause of that. Wings which flapped smartly and folded and so on would be harder than capes, but we don’t have that.

I don’t see it, they could have linear capes that just flow their own way instead of being dynamic, we have certain light armor pieces that move already.

And on top of that there’s things like flow dynamically already as well, I just don’t get it.

Offense vs. punishment, risk vs. reward

in PvP

Posted by: Knote.2904

Knote.2904

Of course, those who support the status quo have a powerful argument that beats everything: “This is how it is, and ANet is unlikely to change it.”

Also the fact that it would cost a lot of money and that making a core-design level change would break the game for a while until it got polished/balanced back out…but I know what you mean

One thing that confuses me is that you mention zerker gear is really popular. Relatively few people use zerker gear in PvP, so I’m curious as to what your perspective is. Thieves use it regularly, mesmers use it often, and some very rare, brave eles use it, but anything outside of that is considered a niche build.

That’s the thing, there’s not that much of that going on, it’s too mindless and spammy atm, there’s not much option for intelligent play/dodging because most of the dmg is coming from non stop spam.

Maybe. I never said it was easy. I enjoy the fact that not everything has a massive tell—some skills are very powerful just because they’re hard to avoid. Usually the only way to dodge those is to get into your opponent’s head, which is another aspect of RPGs that I enjoy.

It’s not about making it easier, it’s about balancing the risk vs reward.

Right now most dmg/attacks are low risk/high reward.

There is no intelligent dodging from auto spam, where’s the risk on the opponents end? Nothing, just tons of dmg flying at you and you spam dodge randomly to try and mitigate some of it, where’s the strategy in that situation?

All I want for Longbow is for the damage dealt at furthest range to be the normal damage across all ranges. But a longer distance should equal higher critical damage IMO.

All I want from backstab is for the damage dealt from behind to be the normal damage from all directions. But a stab from behind should equal higher critical damage IMO

This is completely different from backstab amigo. Backstab is burst damage, and is easy to pull off. Longbow’s #1 is outright useless outside of super long range and it’s very hard to do that in PvE, resulting in the weapon outright sucking to the point where it’s rarely used anywhere but WvW. Whereas the Dagger mainhand on a thief is powerful enough to be used in WvW, PvP, AND PvE.

so a MELEE attack thats only available with a special buff, AND requires specific position, is harder to pull off than a 1500 range spammable autoattack? You musta bought the good stuff this week, that or your doctor messed up your prescription. How about we make the under 25% of heartseeker damage apply to all the damage ranges? no, dont like that either. You cant have the full range damage at all ranges, that defeats the purpose, at best if you dont like the mechanic of damage changing on range, then take the mid range damage and make that all ranges, with no changes at full range (since you dont like things changing at full range)

If rangers actually had the ability to keep foes at long distance than this would make sense, but any class can close the distance and make the longbow almost completely useless. Sure we have the knockback but that is mitigated by stability and now stun break will also get you out of this. “Hunter’s Shot” should have a root similar to the warriors “Pin Down” making the lb a little more viable 1v1 (although it would still be next to useless unless the damage at close range is increased).

Again, this is not making sense. Your asking for a weapon designed to be long range, to be most effective at melee? I want my dagger to be effective at 1500 range, guess i shoulda picked a different weapon. Thats not what its for, every weapon (mostly) has a place and a purpose. If your going to fight up close, dont take longbow or make it effective at at short range, and take away the 1200-1500 range and bring it down to 120-300 like everyone elses close range weapons.

Ironically a lot of long range siege type weapons are far more effective in melee than they ever are at range.

Thief Shortbow Clusterbomb for instance.

Engy Grenades.

Guardian Sceptre.

Warrior Longbow.

Thief shortbow is long range siege? are you joking? Rangers can throw a dagger farther than thief can shoot a shortbow, thief shortbow is medium range at best, and thats assuming that the enemy doesnt sit down, have a cup of tea then sidestep (dont even have to dodge) one step away to avoid both of the damage attacks

Um… yes, clusterbomb is long range siege.

1200 slow high dmg exploding projectiles, hard to use long range and much slower DPS, easy as kitten to hit melee range and much higher DPS.

Err, and thief with shortbow should be the last person to complain about people side stepping their auto’s, thief shortbow auto actually homes in a bit, how does it miss on people side stepping lol?

Go talk to a guardian. =p

Personally I think they should either increase the cone width or the range, 450 is puny for a flamethrower, it should atleast be 600-700.

Flamethrowers/Torrents in RIFT felt pretty nice, being long range but thin-width column aoe’s, where you’re actually spraying a column of flames like a real flamethrower, you also had to commit to do dmg (being a frontal channeled attack) but with good dmg and range there was a time and place to use it.

The knockback would then pair very well with the extra range, and make it an ok ish mid range skirmish weapon.

For napalm it would be cool if it was like an oil slick that just crippled a tiny bit, but when could catch on fire to do dmg and become a fire field.

For potential future, I really dislike the ground target/pointer direction target thing. Give me the option to anchor AE ground target abilities to an actual target.

When I first joined the game I picked a Norn Mesmer because I thought it went well in my head and I enjoyed playing it but now fast forward to level 80 I really dislike it…
At the games launch I had no idea what the high tier gear would look and it really doesn’t fit on a female Norn.

I’d buy a race change in a instant if it became available I don’t wish to make a new character as I’ve invested so much in this character..

Does anyone feel the same way?

This has already been asked again and again and again.

The developers have already commented on this question in a Q&A once: No.

Why? Because the amount of work that would be required to go into making such a change wouldn’t be worth the change itself. Their engine might not even have the ability to allow it. You’re talking about changing over an entire personal story, which is tied into the race, changing about conversations that were already had, and many other things. This even includes change to Racial Gear. Again, a big hassle for what boils down to very little of the population itself wanting this feature.

P.S. How could you not know what the "higher tiered armor would look like? Racial gear is in your races capital city, which is reachable at level 2 and right next to your spawn after the introduction area. Lion’s Arch holds the rest of the dungeon sets, and that’s reachable through the portal in your capital city (again, at level 2). It would seem that it’s less about an issue of “didn’t know” and more of an issue of “put no effort into it at all”.

Ok one, the only personal story that would make a difference is pre 30 stuff, anything after that race has no friggin meaning.

Two, personal story is garbage anyway, why the hell would you deny people the ability to enjoy their character because of stupid personal story garbage?

Three, just completely resetting personal story would not be a big deal, it’s the same as recreating a new character, who cares if someone gets the useless little rewards all over again by working through another story?

I had to abandon my necro I spent a ton of time on because I realized just how garbage armor and weapons are on an Asura, huge waste of time.

Your larger body as a charr takes up more of your screen though. If I’m doing PvP the angle of the camera doesn’t matter as much as me being able to see what my opponent is doing right in front of me.

Hardly, the taller character also has it’s camera raised giving you a better overview.

Like the difference of standing on the top of a house vs standing on the top of a tower.

This is actually one of the reasons I usually chose an asura… so I can see more of my screen since it’s already eaten up by other things.

Except as asura your camera is shoved further down your neck so you actually get to see less lol.

Uhh, no it’s not. Players with asura characters can zoom to the same exact distance as any other character.

Charr camera here is raised higher.

This is made even worse for Asura with giant upper UI elements clouding your frontal view even further.

There just needs to be a way to transfer a soulbound item from an old char to a new one.
